International Figures Unite to Announce New Humanitarian Prize as part of 100 LIVES Initiative The purpose of the 100 LIVES initiative is to address the issues of genocide, human rights violations and the power of positive action through three key elements: Learning from the past by issuing a global call to unearth the untold stories of survivors and saviors from the Armenian Genocide that will be brought to life on 100LIVES.com; Delivering for the present by introducing the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, a new global humanitarian award that will be given to people who put themselves at risk to enable others to survive and thrive; Shaping a better future by administering Gratitude Projects to organizations and in communities that played a prominent role in saving Armenian lives a century ago. The Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity is a new global award that will be given annually to people who put themselves at risk to enable others to survive and thrive. Recipients will be recognized for the exceptional impact

their actions have made to preserving human life or advancing humanitarian causes, despite the challenges that they have overcome. A grant of U.S. $1 million will be given to the organization that the recipient identifies as the inspiration for his or her actions. In this way, the Aurora Prize will make a tangible difference to the causes that motivate people to risk their health, liberty, reputation, or livelihood by voluntarily carrying out acts that enable others to survive. The Aurora Prize has been developed as part of 100 LIVES, an international humanitarian project rooted in the events of the Armenian Genocide. This year marks the centenary of the Genocide where an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed. In spite of this tragedy, approximately 500,000 survived and found shelter abroad, many with the help of strangers. 100 LIVES is a global effort to pay tribute to and thank the individuals and institutions whose actions saved lives a century ago.

Even in the darkest hours of human history, there are glimmers of light. A hundred years ago many courageous people stepped forward to help Armenians when they needed it most. Thanks to their actions a people survived, against terrible odds. Now generosity lives in the heart of every Armenian. Now, one hundred years later, it’s time to share these stories.

A

rmenia is known as a museum under the open air. But what kind of a museum is it? Which fields can be interesting for a tourist who knows about Armenia just from books, videos and photos? Armenia is not only delicious cuisine, hospitable people, ancient temples, monasteries and fortresses, but also mountains, mysterious caves, waterfalls and many other wonders of wild nature. You can discover and love Armenia only by captivating tours through those beautiful places of wild nature, where one can reach only on foot. To feel the spirit

10

of the marvelous places, you need to move away from civilization and walk away from highways. Our goal is to show that there is nothing more wonderful than nature, that anything created by men can never be as ideal as nature’s creations. We want to make everyone feel the contact with nature and be the part of it. All mentioned above sounds very good. Some people go to hiking thinking just about that kind of emotions, forgetting to take some points into consideration in advance. They go to hiking with too

heavy backpacks, or vice versa, don’t take necessary things. That’s why it is very important who organizes the trip and who takes the responsibility for your safety. We will give you right instructions about outfit, the way of walking, right food in the mountains and so on. Our team consists of people who like nature, that kind of people are usually positive and reliable, that’s why our trips are always worth remembering for all the participants. If you understood the main point of the written above, you certainly should be among us.

TORTUM WATERFALL

T

ortum Waterfall is one of the most remarkable natural treasures of Turkey next to Tortum Lake located in Tortum district, 100 km north of Erzurum. The lake was formed as the result of a great landslide, which blocked the valley though which the Tortum River flowed. At the same time, the water sought a new outlet over a fault with a drop of 48 m. Some geologists claim that this landslide is a very old one. These experts, among whom are to be counted a

12

number of foreign geologists, believe that the landslide took place at the end of the Quaternary period. However, there is also another opinion on this subject that the landslide was comparatively recent and could not have occurred more than a few centuries ago. The waterfall is fed only from the surplus water and thus now functions only for a very short period during the months of May and June when the water level of the lake is exceptionally high. During the other months the bed of

this magnificent waterfall is almost dry. There is a recreation area around the waterfall for tourists visiting the site. An observation platform allows the visitors a close sight to the waterfall. A staircase leads to the underneath of the waterfall. After the great waterfall with its drop of 48 m, the river flowed over a series of cascades until its arrival in the Tev Valley. The combination of cascades and waterfall is particularly beautiful.

Explore, Experience and Enjoy: Learning Tours in the Black Sea Basin Region

T

he benefits of exchange visits and learning tours are numerous, far more than just acquiring information. An intellectual and physical journey creates common understanding, relationships forged in the fun and hardships of shared experience, commitments to new approaches, and friendships as foundation for future networking. Such visits enable travelers and hosts to focus time and attention on a topic, learn deeply, share ideas, and assess the relevance of new approaches. In the framework of the Promoting Innovative Rural Tourism (PIRT) Project co-funded by the European Union four learning tours were organized in partner countries: Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia and Turkey. These tours were organized to enable tourism service providers and representatives of travel agencies to come together, explore the specifics of rural tourism of partner countries and share their best practice. The learning tour to Armenia enabled the participants to discover 14

the beauty of Armenia, the potential for further development of rural tourism in the country. The regional group visited touristic attractions of Armenia such as Khor Virap, Ukhtasar, Jermuk, Lake Sevan etc. In Bulgaria the participants visited Nature park of Golden Sands, Baba Radka’s rural guesthouse, a bee farm in the village of Kosharitsa, Aladja mediaeval Orthodox Christian cave monastery, Botanic garden in Balchik, ceramic art shop near Albena resort and Nessebar- a UNESCO heritage site. The Georgian tour gave an opportunity to visit Mtsketa), Bodbe, pheasant Tear’s wine cellar in Sighnaghi, Simonay Zaoty (a small rural complex where the visitors have the opportunity to try traditional Georgian food and get acquainted with the specifics of Georgian culture from inside), Nunu’s farm house (amazing combination of winery, museum and restaurant) in Velistsikhe, 16th century Gremi monastery, medieval cave city of Vardzia, Gvirabi wine cellar in Kvareli, Twins Wine

Cellar in Napareuli, Prometheus cave in Kutaisi, eco-cottages in Borjomi. The group also had an amazing opportunity to participate in experiential learning on Georgian suluguni cheese in mini-factories in Tsalka and Poka. In Turkey the regional group of tourism service providers and representatives of travel agencies visited Karaca cave in Gumushane, Aydintepe Underground City in Bayburt, Baksi museum, Bayburt Castle, Uzungol lake in the south of Trabzon, Ozcay tea Factory in Trabzon, Historical Bridges Along Firtina Valley, Gelintulu Waterfall and Ayder Plateau, Sumela Monastery. These exchange visits provided wonderful opportunity to travel agents and tourism sector service providers from Armenia, Georgia, Turkey and Bulgaria to get involved in the regional network of tourism sector service providers and discuss opportunities of future cooperation within and beyond the frameworks of the project. Emin Bolbolian

SINOIAN- When Inspired by Armenian Culture! -Dear Emin, accept our thankfulness for giving TourInfo Magazine this great pleasure to introduce SINOIAN exclusive ethnic street wear brand. So, could you tell us about your career start? I knew from the very beginning that design was my passion. When I was around 17 I started creating my first fashion pieces. One year later I got my own sewing machine and was able to experiment on a more advanced level. I created unique fashion pieces by re-designing some of my old trousers or jackets and I did the same for my friends in school. So basically I took old clothes which I was not wearing anymore turning them into modern and contemporary fashion pieces. This is how it all started. -How did you come up with the name SINOIAN? Does it have any special meaning? I wanted to create something unique and new, which is modern fashion, suitable for daily use, fresh and meaningful with an Armenian flair and background. I wanted the name to express that. That’s why I decided to choose a name which did not exist until then, just like this sort of fashion brand. I also wanted to create a name that expresses the ”armenianness” of the brand, by adding the typical Armenian IAN ending to it and something that would tonally fit into the world of fashion. The name SINOIAN itself derived from the last name of William Saroyan as being one of the most outstanding literary figures of the 20th century, kind of did the same but in his field – creating unique literary pieces but always keeping the Armenian culture alive. So I took the name Saroyan as a basis and sort of developed a Saroyan of fashion, namely SINOIAN. - We know you are working with different types of Armenian cultural and graphical elements. Which element has been your favorite so far and why? That’s right. I am working with elements from ancient Armenian fabrics, architectural Armenian elements, old Armenian books, our cross stone (Khachkar) and of course with our unique 48

Armenian alphabet. Amongst all of my designs and the elements I don’t really have a favorite. They are all special in their own ways. But what I really like are the floral ornaments or the bird letters. They are full of bright colors and beautiful shapes. If you look at these forms they tell stories, they are authentic and meaningful. -Have you ever been to Armenia? Yes, I have been. I have family and friends who live in Yerevan. Actually I will be in Armenia again in August this year. I am already excited and looking forward to it. Also it will be a good opportunity to get some inspirations for my future designs. - I am sure all lovers of SINOIAN are impatient about your new special creations. Which is going to be your next item? We are now working on some new fashion pieces. The time has come to expand our product line and add some cool stuff besides t-shirts. Maybe a dress, or a jacket, or some nice accessories. There will also be a really cool event coming up in the next few months, which we are very excited about. Stay tuned, follow us on Facebook or Instagram by searching for SINOIAN to receive the latest information about that and our upcoming collections. -What is your message to your followers and especially our Armenian readers? First of all I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and the appreciation for our work. There wouldn’t be no SINOIAN if it wasn’t for our followers and fans worldwide. And my message is: Be proud of who you are! Especially if you are Armenian, and I don’t mean it in a nationalist way. I mean to be proud of our thousands of years old Armenian heritage, culture and beautiful art. Be aware of it, show it to the world and let others be part of it. Our culture and art is too beautiful and unique to not to be shown. Even some of the most luxurious brands like Hermès recognize the beauty of our culture and show it to the world. And as Paruyr Sevak said, “menk kich enk, sakayn mez hayen asum“.
