Even though you probably think it’s saving you time, leaving your clubs in the car overnight or for an extended period is never a good idea. In cold weather, the material on your grip contracts and becomes firmer, which can create cracks. Graphite shafts can become brittle, and condensation starts to build up golf clubs left in cold temperatures for a long time. Not only does it affect your clubs but leaving your bag in the car can also damage your golf balls.
In warmer weather, the rubber compounds expand and have more rebound. Whereas in cold temps, the rubber contracts and gets firm, creating less rebound. A more controlled temperature will keep your clubs safe for a longer period of time.
We have been doing our best to keep a normal 18-hole course rotation in play this winter. Our course rotations will vary from time to time. When golf is available, we hope this has enhanced your experience. Winter guest rates are in effect and do not include the cart fee.
• Please make sure your have a tee time, walk ups are very difficult when we are only utilizing 18-holes. Please do not expect to play if you do not have a tee time. The nicer, warmer days can be quite busy during the winter months.
• Please call ahead for frost & weather delays (719-636-2520).
• Frost/weather delays or closures will be emailed via Jonas to all members with tee times on the day of play.
• When golf carts are permitted, it is recommended there be a maximum of 2 carts per group during the winter course months. The golf course benefits from less cart traffic during the winter months.
• The range tee is limited to the mat area on the South end of the practice tee.
• Range balls are located in the golf shop until spring. When practicing only, those members not on the range club will be charged $6 per bag for their range balls. Range balls are included when playing golf.
• Make sure you are repairing ball marks and filling divots with sand mix provided.
Callaway’s Ai SMOKE MAX – The new Ai Smoke Max Driver is the world’s first Ai Smart Face designed using real player data. The all-new Ai Smart Face optimizes driver performance using swing dynamics from thousands of real golfers. These swing dynamics, or Swing Code, consist of swing speed, club delivery, and face orientation just prior to impact. The promotes the optimal launch conditions and tight downrange dispersion.
Multiple Sweetspots – with Ai Smart Face technology, micro deflections are activated upon impact, helping to optimize launch and spin on off-center shots. This results in sweet spots in the center and all over the face.
Carbon Chassis – The 360-degree Carbon Chassis has been refined to promote increased weight distribution. By adding the internal titanium support structure, the Carbon Chassis is now 15% lighter. This mass redistributed into the head to improve launch conditions and add forgiveness. Each forged carbon sole features a uniqu color and carbon pattern, making every piece one-of-a-kind. Adjustable Perimeter Weighting –The MAX driver features a forgiving shape and adjustable perimeter weighting to deliver up to 19 yards of shape shot correction. Stop by the Golf Shop to test drive the new Ai Smoke driver series from Callaway.

Irrigation work is not just for the growing season. Our team has been busy installing additional irrigation zones in areas with no coverage. The first area we are adding irrigation to is the right rough of 1 north. The way our system was designed is in double rows with one main line going down both sides of the fairway. Therefore, there are no back up heads to keep rough alive and growing. Most holes have additional zones in the landing areas already, we are just adding beyond these zones. It is our plan to add zones to 1, 3, & 9 north & 4 south to get them as close to full coverage as we can.
Other improvements to the irrigation system are also being completed before the golf season. We are making the investment to change out every last impact irrigation head to modern gear driven rotors. The subject I spoke about in previous issue here.
Update: Our management team has approved this project. We have hired a contractor to come in and change out the remaining 200 heads before spring. his project will vastly improve playability and aesthetics on the South and North golf courses. This is a game changer and will save our team valuable time daily. Time we will use to perfect the rest of the golf course.
Learn more about our Grounds and Greens leadership team in our Team Member Spotlight on pages 34 and 35.
There are many instances where proper court etiquette is denied and the potential for a disagreement amongst fellow members can occur. For those seasoned veterans of the game to all new racquet sport players, proper court etiquette is a must learn before stepping on court. For instance, the time of your court reservation is held to make sure the court is booked properly for all members and guests.
Please respect the time of the reservation before and after play so that there are no members stepping on court prior to their start time. The reservation should be finished and exiting the court at the end of their time so the next reservation can step on court. During peak hours this is very important so that there is a smooth transition between reservations. If a ball happens to be mishit on another court politely stop play, wait for the point to finish, and request assistance on getting your ball back.

We love that our couples choose to have a destination wedding at our resort but it is best to be prepared for the high elevation that come with saying "I do" in the mountains. Here are some tips our wedding specialists suggest:
Encourage your guests to begin their Colorado vacation a few days before the wedding in order to allow their body to acclimate to the elevation. Altitude can affect each individual so differently, so this is a crucial step to take in order to avoid altitude sickness. We recommend strolling through the GOG Park to help.
Staying hydrated is paramount at higher altutudes where the air is thinner. Do what you can to influence your guests to drink plenty of water while they are here and the days leading up to the wedding. Some fun ideas couples have done in the past is made welcome bags with water bottles and liquid IV in them. Our Specialists also always recommend water stations for your guests to utilize before the ceremony and during cocktial hour.
Weather in the mountains is known to be unpredictable. so a flexible plan is essential. When you have a wedding at our Resort your venue will come with the ideal weather backup plan for the worst case scenerio. Some other great options you can provide to make sure your guests are as comfortable as possible are blankets for the cooler weather, umbrellas, and even personalized fans. There are so many ways to add a fun touch to making sure everyone at your wedding as the best experience possible.
When it comes to hosting a destination wedding there are many details that go into your big day. Share as much information with your guests as you can to unsure they are as prepared as possible for what they should expect. Include information on your website & invitations about the high altitude, packing tips for the weather, accomadation reccomendations and any additional details they should be aware of. This will ensure everyone is well-prepared and can fully enjoy the big day!

DIRECTOR OF AGRONOMY
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE IN AGRONOMY?
I have worked on golf courses for 24 years starting off when I was in high school in Massachusetts. I recently celebrated my 17-year anniversary here at the club.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE AND WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WORK HERE?
I grew up playing golf and enjoyed working outside. There was an older gentleman at the course I was working at that was going to UMASS for Turfgrass Management to be a Golf Course Superintendent. I was hoked and had to enroll at UMASS when it was time. While in school, I interned at the Broadmoor in the summer of 2006. The following season, the assistant position at KC was open. It was the perfect transition.
WHICH GOLF EVENT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST EACH YEAR?
Camel Drivers. The tournament is scheduled for the most ideal time of year. We are usually fully healed from winter and it is our opportunity to speed up the greens.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love how rewarding the work is. When I drive the course at the end of the day and see the beauty of the golf course and product the team has produced. There is no better feeling.
The Grounds and Greens team also won our internal "Golden Rufus" Award for the quarter! They were awarded this as the team that went above and beyond keeping our property beautiful and safe during these winter months.
I started off with my family's business, Fiske Brothers Yard Works, LLC, and worked for 10 years for my family. Then I started my own landscaping business. Later, I worked at Flying Horse Ranch Golf Course, where I pursued my interests. I started at Kissing Camels in 2021 and was recently promoted to Landscape Manager.
I loved the grounds and management team I met with. I saw opportunity for growth and improvement based on my skill set.
I always look forward to the employee tournament because it gives our employees a chance to see and have fun on the course that they put so much hard work and effort into.
At Flying Horse, I discovered a love of golf courses and I then fell in love with the grounds at Kissing Camels. I have toured many courses in the state of Colorado, but Kissing Camels is my favorite. From upper management to the kitchen staff, along with our wonderful members, and the environment Steve Blais has curated, I can't imagine working anywhere else. I honestly look forward to going to work every day. I love my employers, my team, the members of the club, the comradery, and you can't beat the view.
