montserrat Montserrat is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Argentinian designer Julieta Ulanovsky. The design was inspired by signage from her historical Buenos Aires neighborhood of the same name.

Updated November 2017: The family was redrawn by Jacques Le Bailly at Baron von Fonthausen over the summer, and the full set of weights were adjusted to make the Regular lighter and better for use in longer texts. In fall, Julieta Ulanovsky, Sol Matas, and Juan Pablo del Peral, led the development of Cyrillic support, with consultation with Carolina Giovagnoli, Maria Doreuli, and Alexei Vanyashin.

Montserrat

The old posters and signs in the traditional Montserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires inspired Julieta Ulanovsky to design this typeface and rescue the beauty of urban typography that emerged in the first half of the twentieth century.

The Montserrat Project began with the idea to rescue what is in Montserrat and set it free under a libre license, the SIL Open Font License. This is the normal family, and it has two sister families so far, Alternates and Subrayada. Many of the letterforms are special in the Alternates family, while ‘Subrayada’ means ‘Underlined’ in Spanish and celebrates a special style of underline that is integrated into the letterforms found in the Montserrat neighborhood.

As urban development changes that place, it will never return to its original form and loses forever the designs that are so special and unique. The letters that inspired this project have work, dedication, care, color, contrast, light and life, day and night! These are the types that make the city look so beautiful.

A busy Madrid street, with a chemists shop, bakery and wine bar. It is the evening of August 14 during the verbena of la Paloma. After a substantial Preludio presenting several of the main themes of the zarzuela the scene opens.

In a heartfelt solo Julián bemoans his jealousy "Tambien la gente del pueblo" and Rita offers to console him. A janitor and his wife wrangle about putting their child to bed on such a hot evening, some flashily dressed individuals buy doughnuts, churros and drinks in the bakery opposite. The scene culminates in a celebratory Seguidillas as everyone prepares to enjoy the verbena of the Paloma Coro: "Por ser la Virgen de la Paloma". "¡Oh, qué noche me espera!". Paloma is a Madrid street, Vega’s text presents us with a slice of life on such a hot, carnival night, and his characters are drawn from the working people he’d have observed any and every day in Madrid. with Don Hilarión and his old chum Don Sebastián discussing their ailments, the barbarity of modern science, and the insufferable heat in front of the chemist's shop "El aceite de ricino". Julián and Rita, the barkeeper's wife.

Perhaps the greatest zarzuela of all, La verbena de la Paloma is an original libretto by de la Vega, whose father had written libretti for Barbieri and his contemporaries. He originally offered it to Chapí, who was unable to set it to music because of a legal wrangle with his publishers. Chapí's great rival set the whole piece in only nineteen days, despite the intricacy of the text. Bretón wrote: "I composed in the cafés, the taverns, even on benches in the Itsstreet."success
