Visitor guide | Welcome välkommen buorisboahtem bures boahtin tervetullut tervetuloa to Gällivare

Hi there!

Let the warm, welcoming midnight sun lift your spirits when you visit Gällivare in the summer. Our small Arctic town is nestled between the mountains and the deep forests. We even have our very own mountain and nature reserve Dundret, which is easily accessible from the town centre. Gällivare is widely known for its brilliant light in the summer, bursting with energy and life. Hikers of all kinds flock here. Explore the contrasting seasons.

Discover Gällivare’s unique nature by embarking on an expedition in World Heritage Laponia –a living cultural landscape. Sleep in comfort in one of our genuine mountain stations, enjoying a sauna, good food and a comfortable bed after your adventures.

Winter in Gällivare is long and delightful. The town’s location 100 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle gives you a good chance of experiencing the spectacular northern lights. Midwinter darkness will yield to the sunny days of our famous ‘spring-winter’ – there’s something here for everyone!

During the sunlit part of winter, activities like cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowmobile trips, and ice fishing are very popular. Bask in the sun’s warming rays, grilling a sausage over an open fire out on the ice. Warm your hands on the mug you’re drinking from. The possibilities for winter adventure are endless in Gällivare.

Gällivare is also home to two mines: the underground mine LKAB Malmberget and the open-pit mine Boliden Aitik. Mining is an important industry for our community, and it has come to a point when an entire town needs to be moved. This major and exciting urban transformation phases out Malmberget bit by bit, and a new Gällivare emerges.

Gällivare is an Arctic gem worth exploring in all seasons, so we’ve created a circular calendar for you in the brochure, outlining possible activities for every month.

Welcome, please make yourself at home.

January

Experience the icy Arctic winter in Gällivare. The temperature can plummet below -30 degrees Celsius, but don’t let the cold frighten you – often the coldest months are the setting for nature’s most breath-taking spectacles. The northern lights dance across the sky, creating a magical show of light during evenings and nights. Put on a pair of snowshoes or touring skis and head out into the snow-clad landscape. Just remember to bring a head torch, because darkness falls quickly above the Arctic Circle in January. Spend the night in a cosy lodge with a fire flickering in the wood stove, listening to the birch trees crackling in the icy cold outside.

Don’t miss the recurring cultural event Polar Winter Night that lights up town after the long, dark polar winter. Polar night is the time of year when the sun never rises; it stays below the horizon all day, creating an enchanted blue twilight light. Let Gällivare guide you into a world of contrasts and adventures during the month of January.

February

Slowly but steadily we’re heading towards brighter and warmer times. The days are getting longer. Cross-country trails and downhill pistes are prepared, and this is also a popular time to go dog sledding if you want to discover the forest landscape. At the end of the month the mountain bus service to World Heritage Laponia begins, and the mountain station STF Saltoluokta opens for the season.

On February 6, we celebrate the Sami National Day here in Sápmi. In Gällivare this is usually highlighted through events at the Gällivare Culture Museum and the open-air museums around the municipality.

Jokkmokk is an hours’ drive from Gällivare and the famous Jokkmokk market is arranged during the first week of the month. This is a Sami-inspired winter market that has drawn visitors from around the world for more than 400 years. The number of people gathering here during the market weekend is usually between 40,000 and 50,000 people.

March

Spring-winter arrives in Gällivare, and more and more people gather outside in the sunshine. Our very own mountain Dundret, a mere eight minutes from the centre, offers corduroy pistes and 100-cm-deep snow outside the main resort. Mid-term activities are organised for families with children and regularly updated in Gällivare’s activities and events calendar.

In the beautiful mountains of Laponia, the popular trail Kungsleden features mountain cabins that are staffed until the end of April. If you want to get to know Sami culture and the beautiful nature within the World Heritage, Naturum Laponia in Stora Sjöfallet national park has opened for the season.

In central Gällivare the annual winter market is organised, where you will find a wide range of Sami handicrafts, textiles, and food. It’s the perfect opportunity to try some gáhkku (Sami flatbread) or souvas (cured and smoked reindeer meat).

April

Grab a camping mat and a spade because this is the season to dig a ‘sun pit’ in the snow. Everywhere you go, from mountain tops to frozen lakes, there are sun-kissed pleasure seekers with a mug of fire-boiled coffee in one hand and perhaps an ice-fishing rod in the other. The lodge at the top of Dundret, ‘Åke på toppen’, and Nuolajärvi are two places near the centre that will add a sparkle to spring in Gällivare.

A classic sports event and public celebration is arranged at the foot of Dundret on the first Saturday in April: ‘Dundret Runt’. It’s a 30 or 50-km cross-country skiing race around Dundret nature reserve.

Just beyond the nature reserve you can access the Gällivare snowmobile route network with 1,200 kilometres’ worth of trails. There are endless opportunities here, such as ice fishing, sausage grilling or cabin stays. If you want to travel more comfortably you can opt for a snowmobile safari, on offer in many locations around the municipality.

Remember to pack

• Waterproof shell jacket

• Wool/synthetic undergarments to wear closest to your body

• Extra socks

• Well broken-in hiking boots

• Clean and comfortable clothes to change into, and extra thermals

• Down jacket/warm sweater, hat, gloves

• Food and drink

• Soap for washing, cleaning, and washing up

• Plastic bag for rubbish

• Travel pharmacy and first-aid kid (remember blister plasters)

• Seat or sleeping pad for breaks

• Sunglasses, sun screen and cap

• Mountain map and compass

• Mosquito repellent

• Pocket knife, matches/fire steel

• Torch/head torch

• Toilet paper + small garden spade for digging holes

• Camera and binoculars (optional)

Pack right for the mountain

Hiking in the mountains will be easier and more enjoyable if you pack right and light. These are packing lists to help you plan both shorter day trips and longer hikes in the Gällivare mountains.

If you are staying in mountain cabins

Check which mountain cabins have a shop. Laponia (The Swedish Tourist Association or Badjelánnda/Padjelanta Laponia Turism) has its own shops. The food might be a bit more expensive, but it means you can pack lighter. For the trails Kungsleden and Padjelantaleden you normally need a 50-65 litre rucksack.

Add the following:

• Towel

• Travel sheets/sleeping bag

• Change of clothes

• Torch/head torch

• Means of payment and membership card (STF/accommodation tickets)

If you are camping

For camping, you need a bigger rucksack (60-80 litres). Choose designated tent pitches along the trail to minimise your impact on nature, and add the following:

• Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad

• Camping stove, fuel, matches/fire steel, dish washing utensils

• Provisions

• Extended first-aid kit

• Torch/head torch

• Needle, thread, gaffer tape for repairs

May

May is the month in between seasons. You might see patches of green lawn, but also be able to ski in a t-shirt. Reindeer calves are born at the end of April and in May. It’s a sensitive time of year and they need their peace and quiet. There are several rivers in our region, and this is when the ice breakup begins – ice floes come loose and plummet downstream in a dramatic display.

In Gällivare, there is a cultural event called Minority Week. Gällivare is a management municipality for the Sami, Tornedalians and Sweden Finns. Their cultures, traditions and languages are highlighted through various events during the celebrations.

For decades, Malmberget has been phased out due to the expansion of the LKAB mine. Discover this transformation on your own on a local bus, or join a guided tour. If you want more in-depth knowledge, we recommend a visit to the exhibition RE-form, or Gällivare Culture Museum.

June

The first month of summer, offering warmth as well as midnight sun from the beginning of June to mid-July. Dundret is an excellent viewpoint for this. If you want to opt for a climate-smart mode of transport to Gällivare, the train line Inlandsbanan runs in summer and offers you a journey filled with unforgettable memories.

Lakes and rivers begin to reach more inviting temperatures, attracting kayakers as well as swimmers. It only takes 15 minutes to walk to the bathing area nearest the centre, Sandviken. Once there, you can enjoy a view of Dundret – the snow-clad mountain is easily spotted just a few kilometres away.

If you prefer to stay on dry land and try some fishing, we recommend the Nuolajärvi recreational area. It is filled with picturesque rest stops and barbecue spots, with piers and a footbridge around the lake. Apart from rainbow trout, salmon trout and perch usually take the bait.

July

The warmest and most popular month to visit. Hiking trails in Laponia have thawed and the landscape is in full bloom. Many visitors choose to hike Kungsleden between Saltoluokta and Kvikkjokk, which is a four-day trek, more or less. It features beautiful forest landscapes in the east, and the high mountains of Sarek national park in the west.

If you want to get your adrenaline going, there is a downhill mountain bike track at Dundret: a 5,000-metre-long bike trail from the top of the mountain all the way down. Enjoy a heartpumping view of Gällivare – nothing beats the feeling of taking control of the terrain.

If you prefer shopping, we recommend a visit to the summer market, arranged annually in late June/early July and right in the centre. You can pick up freshly baked bread, handicrafts, and other odds and ends. You can also find everything you need for a successful picnic. Don’t forget the legendary coarsely-ground coffee Lemmelkaffe to make your excursion complete.

August

The warmth of summer is slowly coming to an end, making August the optimal month for long mountain hikes in Sarek and Padjelanta national parks, for example.

If you’re a fan of long-distance cycling, the Way West might be the most stunning mountain road in Sweden. With its dramatic mountain massifs and deep valleys, you might well recognise it from photos or TV series. It takes approximately seven hours to bike from the exit on Route E45 to Ritsem at the end of the road.

In the northernmost part of the municipality, you’ll find one of the last untouched rivers in Europe: the Kaitum River. It offers renowned salmon fishing, tempting fly fishers from all around the world. The source flow from Kebnekaise extends some 150 kilometres. This means conditions are favourable for pitching a tent and go fishing on your own, or perhaps visit one of the fishing camps.

The Right of Public Access

– do not disturb, do not destroy

The Right of Public Access grants us a unique possibility to explore and enjoy Sweden’s amazing nature. We can bike, hike, camp, pick berries and paddle canoes – as long as we are respectful of nature and landowners. This privilege is truly special, and we feel that everyone who loves and cares for nature should be allowed to experience it.

Within World Heritage Laponia, where nature and culture are especially valuable, there are certain special rules to consider. Some areas have a more extensive Right of Public Access, while some national parks and nature reservations have limitations. It is important to keep up to date on current regulations and rules. Read more about World Heritage Laponia at laponia.nu.

If you camp on private land, you are allowed to pitch a tent for a couple of nights but not near plots, farmland, or cultivations. Keep in mind that the spot must be far from the nearest residence, and that you need the landowner’s permission if you are planning to stay for several days, or pitch more than one tent.

The mountain environment is delicate, and there are often limited resources for making a fire, so best bring a camping stove. Last but not least: leave no rubbish behind, making sure we preserve our beautiful nature.

Enjoy your stay and take this opportunity to explore nature with respect and care.

Reindeer etiquette

How to show respect for reindeer and Sami people working in nature:

• Avoid disturbing reindeer unnecessarily, whether they are stationary or walking.

• Keep dogs on a leash so the reindeer won’t see them as a threat.

• Sit down and wait if you meet reindeer or a reindeer herd during your hike.

• Choose your camp site carefully and avoid pitching your tent in valleys where reindeer are gathered for calf branding.

• Respect the private life of reindeer herders and their world by not pitching your tent near their huts or cabins.

• Pay attention to black bin bags hung by the side of the road to warn drivers that there are reindeer nearby.

Adhering to this, we can preserve the harmony between reindeer, Sami people, and nature.

September

The most colourful time of year when the green hues of summer slowly transition to orange, yellow and red. Nature’s pantry is filled with cloudberries, lingonberries and blueberries that help paint the landscape in colour. If you like being out and about in nature in summer, but are less fond of blood-sucking insects, we promise this month is for you.

Clear skies in the evening will offer great opportunities to catch a glimpse of the northern lights. If you’re a photo enthusiast, late summer is by far the most colourful time of the year. You can discover and hike World Heritage Laponia in its autumn attire. The mountain cabins and the exhibition Naturum Laponia stay open until mid-September.

If you prefer day hikes near the centre of Gällivare, we recommend the Dundret nature reserve – don’t forget to bring a picnic with the traditional coarsely-ground coffee Lemmelkaffe.

October

In October you can see snowflakes swirling in the air. It is the last chance to forage for something tasty from nature’s own pantry before the snow settles. If you have access to a car with winter tyres, we recommend a drive up Dundret, along the paved road Femmanvägen. Once you climb above the town lights, on your way to the top of the mountain, you can see the northern lights or the starry sky.

The Gällivare Culture Festival is arranged in the centre of town, presenting local history and cultural heritage through entertainment, art exhibitions, and film screenings.

If the weather is bad, you should take the opportunity to visit Gällivare Culture Museum. It will give you further insight into the Sami heritage and mining industry that have shaped our community into what it is today. Or perhaps hop on one of the local buses for a comfortable sightseeing tour through town. The trip takes you from the decommissioned mining town Malmberget in the north all the way to the Dundret nature reserve in the south. The first snowfall Culture Stargazing

November

The first real winter month starts by offering perfect conditions for ice-skating on lakes all around Gällivare. The relaxing feeling of going tour skating on a sunny winter’s day is hard to beat – but remember to always check the thickness of the ice first, and to bring ice claws.

Should you desire to gain a bit of elevation instead, on a centrally located mountain, we recommend the lodge at the top of Dundret nature reserve: ‘Åke på toppen’. The terrain varies depending on the season, so this calls for hiking boots or tour skis.

As the month is coming to an end, a Christmas market is organised at Gällivare Hembygdsområde, the open-air museum just a couple of minutes’ walk from the centre. The cosy atmosphere between timbered cottages and along the market stalls is enchanting, and there is something here for all ages. Find local products such as handicrafts and food, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride and – of course – meet Father Christmas.

Dress appropriately for your winter stay

To make the most of your stay in the Arctic environment here above the Arctic Circle, you need to dress appropriately. Wouldn’t it be a shame having to turn back just because it gets too cold? Here are some tips on how to dress when spending time outdoors in Gällivare.

Use garments made from wool or synthetic materials closest to your body. They will help transport moisture and adapt well to temperature change. Avoid cotton garments, as they bind moisture and cool you down.

The mid layer should insulate heat and transport moisture away from your body. Windproof fleece is an excellent material, paired with hiking trousers. But remember that fleece is flammable and avoid sitting too close to the fireplace.

The outer layer has to protect against wind and water/snow. It should also provide freedom of movement and release moisture from within. Hydratic and Gore-Tex are examples of ‘breathing textile’.

Use a jacket and over trousers featuring easily accessible pockets with easy-grip zippers – this makes everything a lot easier when wearing gloves.

Bring extra gloves and hat, either thicker or thinner. That way you’re fully prepared, no matter the weather and even if the temperature changes quickly. The average temperature in January might be -13 degrees Celsius, but it’s not unusual for the temperature to drop below -30.

Opt for shoes that are one or two sizes too big, making space for an extra pair of socks. If possible, choose wool or synthetic materials and avoid cotton socks that will bind moisture and give a cooling effect.

December

This is when the skiing season really gets going. The lifts at Dundret Lapland start running and the resort normally stays open until May 1st. More and more ski resorts follow suit as the month progresses, and cross-country tracks are prepared all around Gällivare.

In the centre, shops decorate their windows, and you are sure to find gifts for your loved ones among the handicraft boutiques. Or perhaps take a walk along the Vassara River to the local butcher shop to purchase local delicacies – some dried reindeer meat perhaps? If you really want to get into the Christmas spirit, several Christmas concerts are arranged this month. What could go better with those angelic voices than a mug of mulled wine and freshly baked saffron buns?

December 21-22 is the shortest and darkest day of the year, also known as the Winter Solstice. This is the perfect time to view the northern lights and the starry sky, and to feel the Arctic cold to the bone.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

What are the northern lights?

This light phenomenon occurs in the sky when charged particles, such as electrons, are moved by solar winds. Particles near the Earth are attracted to the north and south poles, accelerate through the planet’s magnetosphere, and then crash into oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere. The collisions are visible across the sky as coloured flashes. What we call northern lights.

When can I see the northern lights?

Northern lights actually appear most times of the year, but the sky isn’t dark enough in spring and summer to see the lights with the naked eye. Conditions are optimal from September to March, between 9 pm and 2 am. Avoid being near light pollution, such as city light, as this will obscure the northern lights. The light phenomenon occurs in the atmosphere at a height of at least 100 kilometres, making cloud-free skies a prerequisite.

How do I know if there will be northern lights?

The University of Alaska Fairbanks provide an excellent forecast for northern lights on its website: www.gi.alaska.edu.

Where are the best spots in central Gällivare to see the northern lights?

• The parking by Björnfällan Dundret

• The rest stop Sandviken in Gällivare

• The parking near Femmanvägen on the way up to Dundret
