THE WINTER EDITION

/ LIFE & STYLE IN THE ISLE OF MAN

Nearly there now.

It’s started hasn’t it? Even though there’s still a good bit left to go in 2023 the finish line has suddenly snuck into sight, the race is now on to get to the end, and somehow, another year has managed to slip in, those to-do lists haven’t been checked off and there’s already a growing sense of panic and possible hyperventilation about cooking turkeys and manipulating holly into perfect wreaths. So just take a minute, relax with this edition of Gallery and calm down because as Winston Churchill once said, ‘Perfection is the enemy of progress.’

No place like home? Or is there? A visit to the Manx Museum in Douglas to see the thought provoking exhibition ‘Home’ will certainly take your mind off life’s struggles and strains as this exhibition from the Creative Network, which includes over 50 artworks from a number of the island’s favourite artists, ceramicists and photographers, is a sight to behold. Flick to page 12 to find out more about what these makers think as they contemplate what ‘home’ means to them. As well as the temptation to look back on the year we’ve had, we are also firmly interested in the future and much of this issue is dedicated to celebrating graduates in our careers special starting on page 45, which focuses on Standard Bank’s Graduate Programme and hear first hand how recent graduates have benefitted from this, ‘truly peoplefocused workplace.’ Obviously, we know that you like the finer things in life so we’ve taken the liberty of suggesting a few gems to put on your wishlist this year, see page 36 for a taste of luxury handbags and cars to tickle your fancy. Perhaps a glass of fizz (as recommended by the experts at Wine Down on page 34) will take the edge off before you are let loose on our Gallery Gadgets Gift Guide on page 66. If, however, all of this feels a little too indulgent then don’t worry because page 62 strips it all back to basics as Martin Malone advises us on how to eat well with his guide to wholefood eating. Happy End of Year!

hat do you think of when you think of home? Is it the house where you live? Is it the people you share it with? Is the place you grew up? Is it where your friends are? Is it where you are (or were) happiest? Now you’ve puzzled over your answers, have a look at the brief given to members of the Island’s Creative Network for the HOME exhibition which opens at the Manx Museum on 18th November.

C U LTUR E

Is home a place, a country, region or specific location? Or is it simply an organised pile of bricks and mortar? Where do you feel ‘at home’? Is home just a feeling? A sense of belonging, or community of security? Is the Isle of Man home? If it is, is that brought about by birth, choice or circumstance? Are you away from home?

Jeremy-Paul--Fading-light

As you’d expect from a group representing over 80 local artists, their ideas of ‘home’ were wide and varied. Just over 50 works from 33 artists were selected by curators Ian Coulson, Sir Michael Sandle and Katie King for this exhibition which might echo your views, or expand your idea of what home is, or could be. And there are some surprises too. Take Jeremy Paul. Best known for his wildlife paintings he has stepped away from the ‘usual’ with his painting Fading Light. This is of the view looking back from Fort Island to the south of the Island, the place he’s called home for 35 years: as Jeremy says, “what a place to live”. And no wildlife in sight.

Sarah Devereau The Lane Down to Magher Breck

“Whether born here or ‘come-overs,’ we all absorb the influence of the Manx landscape” Photographer Patricia Tutt has also submitted work you wouldn’t expect from someone best known for her images of architecture and the built environment: an impressionistic landscape photograph, Homeland: Texture of the Hills. “Whether born here or ‘come-overs,’ we all absorb the influence of the Manx landscape,” she says. “It becomes part of our identity, our inner landscape, and a reflection of where we live. It infuses the Manx National Anthem (Land of our birth) and becomes as much an idea as a reality.” At first glance you might think some artists have interpreted the brief more literally. Take Aos-si’s Houses – a house is a home right? But here Kate Jerry and Colette Gambell have created a series of mini clay houses, all decorated with links to the land which, they say, show a profound understanding that one is part of, rather than separate from, the land one inhabits. These homes aren’t just houses.

Patricia Tutt Homeland

gathered memories and become who she is. Her ceramic queens are six strong crown-wearing women, each set on a plinth including three random words. Using the ///what3words app viewers can find the precise locations in Peel where these queens can be found, circling the very spot Janet calls ‘home’, despite having living elsewhere for most of her adult life. If Janet’s Going Home with ///what3words represents anyone who has moved away from their spiritual home, then Debra Tracey Carney’s Lost Your Key? evokes a very different sort of leaving ‘home’ by asking what it is really like to truly lose the key to your home and become homeless. The cardboard key in her installation piece is as effective as a cardboard box in providing shelter and safety and the old, much used, mirror invites the viewer in as part of the artwork to consider that homelessness could happen to anyone. Many Creative Network artists have been working on their HOME submissions for months but few have had their lives shaken, and the resulting artworks transformed, as dramatically as Myra Gilbert. When the theme was announced, Myra felt confident that her recent series of artworks involving domestic childhood references would be ideal but in October 2022 she was deeply struck by the loss of her husband. Whereas until then home had always been an emotionally safe place happily shared, the new reality suggested something new and very different and she sought solace in familiar repetitive work - an ongoing therapeutic process that helped her come to terms with her grief. Myra’s work Heart Rug represents a reply to a handwritten message he wrote in his last Valentine card to her: “There will come a time when my love for you could appear to be a memory, but I promise you this, with each and every kiss, my love for you will last for ever and ever more.” Myra rewrote this as a mantra, both celebrating their relationship and it helping her to cope with her newlybereaved state of mind. In Heart Rug, Myra uses her favourite gampi tissue paper to express

Aossi Houses

how fragile life can be. The circular form suggests a ‘home’ setting in reference to domestic textiles, but the central hole was hollowed out to form a wreath-like tribute to her husband. With over 50 pieces of art to choose from, I wanted to pick out some of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking pieces to illustrate this feature, but I can’t finish without mentioning some of the more traditional interpretations of the theme including Sarah Devereau’s beautiful paintings of her family home Magher Breck in the heart of Maughold where, she says, “we all gather for birthdays and celebrations… younger grandchildren enjoying everything about our family home as much as we still do.” Michael Starkey’s Home is Where Your Heart Takes You is a view at Gob Ny Rona looking down at the sea where he swims every day. And Ellan Vannin, Rebecca Odessa’s suspended hand-cut collage, which is inspired by the line in Eliza Craven Green’s poem ‘my own dear Ellan Vannin, with its green hills by the sea’ but also includes the introduction of non-native flora and fauna to the Island, such as red-necked wallabies – much like the artist, who is originally from the antipodes but who now calls the Island home. I’m no artist but writing this has got me thinking about my own definition of ‘home’. Family, friends, security, shelter – all of those have featured heavily during my life, but now curator Ian Coulson’s definition particularly resonates: “As a young art student newly arrived in the English Midlands I couldn’t account for my own persistent unease, and it was only some weeks later (when), having hitch-hiked to Brighton, I saw the English Channel in all its snot green coldness, heard the familiar white noise as waves sucked out through the shingle and simultaneously tasted the reassuringly rotten smell of seaweed and salt in the back of my throat that I had a monumental epiphany… I had missed the thing that had been there all of my life …. THE SEA!” HOME is on at the Manx Museum daily (closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day) from 18th November until 14th April 2024. The Creative Network would like to thank Manx National Heritage and the Isle of Man Arts Council for their support.

BALLAMANAUGH HOUSE

Home Farm & Residential Properties

Ballamanaugh (“Farm of the Monks” in Manx Gaelic) was formerly Abbey land controlled by Rushen Abbey at Ballasalla, which in turn was part of the larger Abbey at Furness. The existing house was built by Sir Mark and Lady Collett in 1937, former Ambassador to Mysore, who also laid out the fine gardens. These gardens were further enhanced by the subsequent owner, Mr Alex Scott. The estate was bought in 1984 by Dr McDonald, who refurbished and remodelled the house and greatly improved the beautiful gardens. The original refurbishment included a new principal entrance hall and stairway, orangery and terraces, and partial refacing with elegant English and North Carolina brick. The current owners then undertook an extensive 3-year refurbishment in 1999 which added the indoor swimming pool, garages, and a guest wing.

N

estled in a sheltered position house at the foot of Cronk Sumark, the house overlooks its own glorious gardens with the hills and valley beyond. It is approached through a pillared entrance guarded by the Lodge House. The drive, flanked by numerous formal borders, a paddock and the walled garden, leads up to a courtyard with a central ornamental Cornucopia fountain and the substantial 4 bay garage.

The rear wing, which was added in 1999, boasts a large laundry room, boot room, storerooms and chauffer’s kitchen. The basement can be accessed from the rear of the house by the plant room and houses a large storeroom and cellar. On the first floor are 5 main bedroom suites and a further first floor office which could be a further bedroom with an existing bathroom. The principal bedroom benefits from his and hers dressing rooms and

bathrooms with views over the garden and valley. Two of the bedrooms at the end of the corridor benefit from a sitting room and kitchen with access to the roof terrace. The gardens and grounds at Ballamanaugh are breathtakingly beautiful and have evolved over many years and boast an array of colour and species. They are arranged in a series of individual secret gardens, all with different borders, shrubs and trees for the various seasons. There are hundreds of different species, many rare and exotic, within the grounds. At one end of the garden sits the beautiful, original ‘Pollys Cottage’. The former dwelling (“Tholtan” in Manx) with 2 bedrooms offers a fantastic opportunity for restoration, subject to the necessary consents. WINE TIME

AGENDA

Anne and Michel Mailliard

Wishing you a

Merry Christmas

Michel Mailliard Champagne

It’s the festive season and an excuse to open a bottle or two of Champagne. But have you ever wondered how it is made and how those bubbles get into the bottle?

C

hampagne is the name of a region in northern France and is the only place in the world where Champagne is produced. Methode Champenoise (or the Champagne method) was used throughout the world to describe any sparkling wine made in this way until 1994 when European law banned it from being used to describe the production of any wines other than those produced in the Champagne region. There are three grape varieties, two of which are red, Pinot Noir (38% of the vineyard area) and Pinot Meunier (32%) with the remaining 30% being Chardonnay. Mechanical harvesting is not permitted so all the grapes are picked by hand and, in order to make a white wine from red grapes, it is important to press them as soon after picking and as gently as possible to prevent any colour from the dark skins staining the juice. The production of Champagne involves two fermentations. The first takes place at a controlled temperature of 18 – 20 degrees Celsius. The wine is then blended to make the required cuvee. Large Champagne houses use wines from 50 – 200 different communes in their ‘house’ Champagne and bring in 10 – 50% of reserve wine from other vintages. The priority is to make it consistent and to build brand loyalty. Liqueur de tirage is added at bottling. This is a mixture of sugar, wine and specially developed yeasts and this provokes the second fermentation. The wines then remain on the lees for a minimum period of 12 months for non-vintage and 3 years for vintage Champagne with the carbon dioxide trapped in the bottle as bubbles. Remuage is the next stage in the process. The bottles are placed in the holes of the pupitre, starting in an almost horizontal position. They are turned every day or two until they are in an almost vertical position. The deposit formed during the fermentation sinks into the neck of the bottle and, after 4 – 6 weeks, the wine becomes completely clear. The necks of the bottles are then placed into a brine bath at -25degrees Celsius for a few minutes and the deposit is expelled by removing the crown cap. A small quantity of sweetened liqueur (the dosage) is then added to make the desired style, the cork is inserted and the bubbles stay in the bottle.

34

Big Champagne House

Chardonnay grapes in Vertus

While 70% of Champagne is made by the 7 largest houses, there are 19000 smallholders, who grow 90% of the grapes. Outside France, 90% of Champagne sales are of the big brands, whereas on the domestic market, ‘grower Champagnes’ are far more popular. A grower Champagne is a small producer who grows their own grapes, makes and bottles the Champagne with their name on the label. One such producer is Michel Mailliard Champagne, based in the Premier cru village of Vertus in the Cote des Blancs. They own 23 hectares, 95% is Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir. They use less than 50% of the base wine produced, keeping the best for their Champagnes and selling the poorer quality wine to the bigger houses, for whom volume is of greater importance. Cuvee Gregory is the non-vintage white, produced from mainly Chardonnay grapes grown in one year. Gregory is named after Michel’s son, who works as a dental surgeon three days a week and runs the business for the rest of the time. Cuvee Alexia is the non-vintage rose, produced from Chardonnay with just 8% of Pinot Noir. This is named after Michel’s daughter, Alexia, a trained pharmacist, now retraining as a winemaker at the age of 52. Blanc de Noirs 2015 This is produced from 100% Pinot Noir. As there is so little Pinot Noir, this is made in tiny quantities and has the most delicious flavours of strawberries and creamy milk chocolate Cuvee Prestige 2014. A Blanc de Blancs Champagne is one made from 100% Chardonnay and this has a wonderfully fresh aroma with brioche and citrus character on the palate. The Mont Vergon 2015 vintage Champagne is the flagship, and is only produced in the best vintages. It comes from a single vineyard and only from a small square plot of older vines in the centre of the vineyard, which was planted by Michel’s mother. The 2015 vintage has spent 7 years on the lees before disgorgement and Wine Down is the only stockist in Great Britain of this and of the Blanc de Noirs. A

s a leading Africa-focused financial services group, our presence stretches across the continent we call home and as far and wide as the Isle of Man, Channel Islands, London and Mauritius - offering employees career-enhancing opportunities in a world-class environment. Standard Bank Offshore’s signature Fast Track Offshore Graduate Programme launched this year and provides local graduates with the

opportunity to dive headfirst into the futurefocused world of offshore financial services. Our 2023 programme offered placements in both IT and general banking functions, with each graduate benefitting from a structured 18-month learning programme giving businesswide exposure at a leading international financial institution. So, let's meet seven of our successful graduates who applied for the 2023 programme:

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to join the Standard Bank Fast Track Offshore Graduate Programme?

A: I am originally from Hampshire and have recently moved to the Isle of Man. With a rooted interest in banking, especially within a client-facing role, I explored the world of graduate schemes and found the Standard Bank Fast Track Offshore Graduate Programme and was intrigued by the unique proposition of an African bank with an international offering in the Isle of Man; alongside the opportunity for an 18-month deep dive into Offshore Banking and Wealth Management at an award-winning institution.

George Ragg-Griffith

22, studied Modern Languages and Cultures (French, Portuguese and Spanish) at the University of Exeter 46

Q: What have been some of your experiences during the programme?

A: We have access to numerous eLearning resources which is great, and I’ve found myself hooked on developing my skill set with almost all that there is on offer, from

Business Development to Financial Accounting and everything in between. I’ve already locked in more than 100 hours. What’s more, we’ve just arrived back from a trip to Jersey and seen the Offshore operations based there, this was a fantastic opportunity to connect with even more colleagues.

Q: What are your future goals, and how do you plan to continue your learning journey?

A: Continuing with my learning is top of the list and Standard Bank has a range of opportunities that support the pursuit of professional qualifications. I am interested in studying towards an MBA to help develop my business acumen and broaden my professional horizons. Outside of work, I participate in lots of sports, and aim to pursue a spot in Team Isle of Man in the Island Games/Commonwealth Games for swimming.

N EWS

Dominic Mead

25, studied History with Economics at University of Manchester Q: Can you tell us about your background and what led you to join the Standard Bank Fast Track Offshore Graduate Programme?

A: I researched various opportunities, but what drew me to Standard Bank’s programme was the basis of building foundations, really understanding the operational functions of banking from the ground up. I also received a tour of the newly renovated office at interview stage, and this definitely added to the rumours I had already heard of the bank having a great environment!

Q: Since joining the programme, what does a typical day look like in your space??

A: I’m not sure describing a day would give enough insight into the variety, but over the course of a week I am observing behind the scenes within the Operations Teams and attending weekly feedback sessions, focussing on observations around roles and responsibilities, risks, and suggestions for improvement. We also have great exposure to all colleagues; particularly senior leadership. It really feels like they want us to succeed and provide us with the tools to do so.

Q: What are your future aspirations, and do you have any advice for those considering a similar career path?

A: I would like to develop a solid understanding of banking and the financial services industry to build up my self-confidence to explore a career in accounting. My advice to anyone considering a Graduate Programme or any other role in the bank is to be open-minded about where the learning opportunities can take you, and enjoy the journey as you explore the finance industry - which is so diverse in the Isle of Man.

Christian Eaton 23, studied Economics at Swansea University

Q: Why did you choose to join Standard Bank's Fast Track Offshore Graduate Programme?

A: I was drawn to the bank's people-focused culture, workplace atmosphere, and enticing employee benefits.

Q: Can you give an insight into what you've learned so far?

A: I have learned a lot by shadowing different teams in Operations space and connecting with management regularly on my experiences. I've also gained a deep understanding of banking operations, especially in Compliance and Anti-Money Laundering (AML).

Q: What are your aspirations for the future, and what advice do you have for those considering a similar career path?

A: I aim to capitalise on the opportunities this programme offers, building a strong knowledge base to take forward in my career. My advice to anyone about to enter the corporate environment, or any area of work, is to embrace opportunities and don't be afraid to explore different roles if your current path doesn't suit you.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: I love sea swimming, of which there is plenty of opportunity to do in the Isle of Man – and eating at my favourite Island restaurant, Kizuna.

Closing the ceremony, UCM Principal Jesamine Kelly, praised the students for the dedication they have shown throughout their studies, wishing them luck for the future and expressing that although for most, their studies might be complete, UCM will always be here to support them.

A Guide to Wholefood Eating W

holefoods are the bedrock of a healthy diet but in today’s world we are surrounded by unhealthy processed and highly processed convenient foods with little or no nutritional value. They are often high in salt, unhealthy fat, sugar and preservatives, whereas wholefoods are rich in healthy micro nutrients (vitamins and minerals), fibre, healthy fats and proteins. Getting the right amount of these essential nutrients from wholefoods every day not only reduces your risk of heart disease, cancer and other serious diseases, but it also helps you reach your full potential in whatever you choose to do. When you’re healthy you feel energised and your physical and mental health improves.

SO, WHAT ARE WHOLEFOODS?

Wholefoods are foods that haven’t been processed at all or have been minimally processed (pasta is an example of a minimally processed food) and are in their natural state with no artificial ingredients added. A wholefood diet will be rich in plant-based foods such as

62

fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts, beans, oats and legumes and animal-based foods such as eggs, cheese, milk, fish, and unprocessed lean meats such as chicken, beef and turkey.

Your body thrives on wholefoods and can easily digest and process them so you benefit both physically and mentally from the wonderful and natural nutrients they provide.

PLANNING YOUR WEEK?

A healthy diet means you need to include a balance of all the nutrients your body needs, so to achieve this, make a plan for the week ahead and decide how many meals you are having (e.g. 3 meals and 1 snack or 3 meals and 2 snacks) and what works for your daily schedule. For example, a nutritious chicken salad wholegrain wrap can be ideal for taking to work. You could also consider batch cooking certain meals at the weekend. Once you have made a plan, then write down your shopping list so you have all the wholefoods

HEA LTH & N U T RIT ION

you need in for the week rather than buying food several times a week. Some good tips and guidelines are: •

Aim for 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day. They’re an excellent source of all the nutrients and fibre your body needs, especially if you eat a wide variety. By eating 5 a day, you drastically lower your risk of developing disease. Make sure you include high fibre wholefoods like avocado, raspberries, chickpeas, kale, lentils, wholegrain rice, wholegrain pasta, sweet potato, brown or whole-meal bread and kidney beans. Include some dairy products such as yoghurt and low-fat cheese. Ricotta for example is a low-fat cheese that is very versatile and can be used in a number of ways to make healthy sauces and curries. There is a long-standing debate about whether dairy products are healthy or not but they are a good source of calcium and contain other nutrients essential for bone health, like vitamin D and phosphorus. This is especially important if osteoporosis runs in your family. As a rule, if dairy doesn’t agree with you or gives you digestive issues, then minimize it or remove it completely. If it doesn’t cause you any problems, then it’s a convenient way to get protein, calcium and other important micro-nutrients. Make sure you include protein rich foods like beans, peas, lentils, seeds, fish, chicken, turkey and lean cuts of meat in most of your meals. You can even consider using a high-quality whey protein powder to boost the protein in you breakfast for example. Whey protein is the byproduct of the dairy industry and is regarded as a minimally processed food.

HOW CAN YOU MAKE TIME TO EAT WELL?

These days most of us are time poor, so the answer here is to be realistic and start small by just introducing one wholefood meal at a time or even start by introducing healthy snacks into your diet. For example, pineapple, melon, tomatoes and radishes, or protein-rich snacks like different types of nuts and seeds, hardboiled eggs and cheese. You could also add dried fruit such as apricots, sultanas, prunes and dates. Humus with dippers like celery, cucumber or peppers are other good examples. A quick and easy breakfast idea is to make a bowl of porridge and then top it with any nuts, fruits or seeds you choose (for example, toasted pecan nuts, dried cranberries, blackberries, grated apple or raspberries). Another day you could replace porridge with plain yoghurt and add a variety of toppings. You could also try a healthy sugar free granola and add yoghurt and fruit. Just be creative. If you fancy something savory, you could try scrambled egg on wholegrain toast with avocado or even add some smoked salmon.

DO YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THE COST OF EATING WHOLEFOODS?

Everybody is worried about inflation and the increasing cost of food. The good news is that eating a healthy wholefood diet can be a cost-effective choice. Consider opting for some frozen wholefoods which are usually cheaper than fresh, plus there’s no waste as they don’t go off. Buying frozen and dried food also saves you time because you don’t have to go shopping as often. Frozen or dried foods are still categorised as wholefoods if they have not been processed. If you’re worried about the nutritional content of frozen food, don’t be. Eating frozen, doesn’t mean you compromise on nutrition at all. In fact, frozen food generally retains all its vitamins and minerals as it’s frozen at source or shortly after. As with any change you make in life, it’s difficult at first but everything is difficult at first, so stick with it until eating wholefoods becomes part of your new healthier life.

However, in 2019, Bobby fancied giving Enduro a try, and having a Trials background, wanted to see how he’d fair in a more fast paced sport. After a few years competing in Enduro & Trials, Bobby decided this year, with the support and backing of his Dad & Motorworx, to enter the British Enduro Championship class in the Clubman category. This championship was ran over eight rounds, spread across both the UK & Isle of Man.
