Students to Register for Courses Daria Borisova News Editor

Spanish River High School and their employees try their best to make the course registration easy for all students. Last year, because of COVID, the school had to change our ways a bit and switch the course registrations to online. Some students struggled to choose their electives, since they were home. Though this year we are getting it all back to normal.

Students will start by watching a “Course Registration Presentation” in their English class the week of February 7. Then each class will walk over to the Media Center and choose wanted electives via Google Form in the week of February 14. A detailed

schedule will follow.

When students pick out their electives they will put the most wanted courses at the top, and the least wanted close to bottom.

At the end students should have seven courses ranked from one to seven. For the courses that require a teacher’s signature, they will submit a request to the teacher who is required to sign. Advanced Placement or AICE courses will go through to their English or Social Studies teachers for approval.

This year the students are very excited to choose their electives in person with their classmates. However choosing your electives could be very difficult for some students. Questions such as, whether to pick AICE or AP could

be very complex. Many students would take a long stressful time figuring out which classes are more eye-catching to colleges.

“I actually quite liked last year’s course registration. It was quick and easy and there was no pressure,” says sophomore Grace Freeman. ” Plus I could watch the video and look at slides if I was confused about something”.

“I honestly prefer everything online. It’s easier because you aren’t rushed and could take your time choosing your electives,” says junior Renzo Reid-Renaerd.

“It was a good revolutionary change that we did last year. Not only students but also their parents got to see all of the electives and what they are about,” states Assistant Principal

Mr. Wade. ”This year’s registration is pretty much the same except that the students get to do it with their classmates. The students still have the same amount of time to choose their electives,” “Last year the course registration was so effortless. I never even opened the google slides they sent us. So I think the fact that they are actually making us pay attention is good,” said junior Diego Pavon. “ They didn’t change it much this year. Same google form, same google slides. Though I do find it better that we are doing it with more people and not at home all by ourselves,” states sophomore Conrad Evans.

Ethical Governance Day to Come to River Amélie La-Branche News Editor

From choosing whether or not to cheat on a test or plagiarize a paper, ethics permeate every facet of a student’s life, especially what lies beneath the soil. In a deeper vein, ethics exists as a principle for law and governmental institutions, professions that may hold interest for many students. Ethical Governance Day, a project introduced to Spanish River by school board representative Erica Whitfield and Judge Samantha Feuer, seeks to connect law academy and leadership students with local government officials in a wide variety of positions. In the past, representatives from the state attorney’s office, the defense council, the Ethics Board, as well as municipal and county administrators, and Judge Feuer, have attended as panelists.

“This is an event that I would have wanted to bring to the Spanish River myself!” enthusiastically notes Academy Coordinator Corey Adelstein. “I think it benefits Spanish River by giving the students in the Law Academy and student government hands-on experience with real

leaders in the community. In this small setting, students will be able to ask questions and interact with government officials.”

Since last year’s hybrid learning platform was not conducive to an inperson event, students last year saw recordings of the Ethical Governance Day event. However, many teachers are excited at the prospect of students once again attaining such treasured conversation with panelists.

“I was really excited to hear about Ethical Governance Day, especially because we didn’t have any guest speakers last year because of the pandemic,” says Law Academy teacher Jamey Potts.

One of the merits of attending Ethical Governance Day in-person is the opportunity for students to interact with panelists personally and ask questions they have prepared in advance. Students can gain insight into the perspective of government officials concerning current events, or about careers that are of interest to them, as well as the educational qualifications required to attain such a position.

“My students are interested in criminal law, and the best practices of lawyers in the court system,” adds

Potts. “They want to know how to formulate an argument, how to be professional in the courtroom, and overall, how to interact in the legal profession.”

In either case, the interests of students are placed in high regard, and students can ask questions on a wide variety of topics.

“In my classes, we have students interested in immigration law and public policy,” says Law Academy teacher Caitlin Crawford. “I think every student can ask about a topic of interest to them, and get a response suited to their interest.”

By meeting real-life examples of careers they may choose to pursue, students are not only able to determine whether or not they undertake a career in law or civics, but are also able to begin preparing their next steps for higher education.

“I teach the senior law academy class, so this is the time my students decide whether or not this is a career they want to pursue in college,” adds Crawford. “I think hearing the personal experiences of people in these positions will help them decide whether or not they would like to go forward in this profession.”

However, the main objective of

Ethical Governance Day does not rest at simply allowing students to interact with local leaders. Teaching the value of ethical leadership, both in and out of the classroom, is vital to participating in a healthy democracy and creating meaningful change in their own communities.

“We can all benefit from talking about ethics in government,” adds Potts.

“Having ethical leadership at Spanish River is important because it sets the stage for how everyone else is going to act.”

Hearing from figures who themselves have created changes within their communities produces a ripple effect where ethical leadership and behavior extend beyond the individual.

“Considering this event is for the leadership and law academy classes, it is reaching a wide variety of students,” says Crawford. “Because of this, these students will be able to integrate the experience in a variety of classes, clubs and academies and have these discussions with their peers, classmates and teachers.”

Though only law academy and leadership students are in attendance at this event, the ramifications reinforce the significance of ethical behavior and integrity for all students and the entirety of the Spanish River community.

Spanish River Vows To Never Forget Duru Boranalp News Editor

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held on January 27 to honor the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust. This day urges students to reflect on these tragic events, as many say if history is not taught, it is bound to repeat itself.

“Students should approach the day with an understanding that this event is something that we, as human civilization, should never forget.

Survivor stories and testimonials, memories of victims, and lessons from this event are all shared on this day,” said Spanish River Holocaust Studies teacher Patrick Abbondandolo.

January 27 also commemorates the liberation of the AuschwitzBirkenau concentration camp.

Every year, students listen to the performances of the band and chorus, as well as personal stories from reallife Holocaust survivors, which are able to add a personal context through their unadulterated experiences and emotions.

“What I took away from the

Holocaust Remembrance Presentation was the impact of all the faces I’ve seen throughout the video,” says senior Brianna Moreira Silva. “I would want the future generations to know the message and the history of the Holocaust forever, due to how terrifying it must have been, and for them to never forget the faces of the people that faced such cruelty.”

Students and staff are fortunate to listen to a real survivor and learn from his experiences.

“We have been fortunate to have Menachem “Mickey” Warshawski as a survivor sharing his story. He survived one of the worst ghettos in Nazioccupied Poland and spent time at Auschwitz,” said Abbondandalo.

In addition to Warshawski’s testimony, the district provides students with a variety of resources to further their understanding of the Holocaust.

“There are a lot of great Holocaust resources that the School District of Palm Beach County makes available to students and staff. Simply go to the school district website and search “Holocaust,” and all of those resources can be seen and utilized,” said

Abbondandalo.

These resources, and the Holocaust presentation as a whole, serve a monumental purpose, meant to inculcate a desire to prevent such devestation from reoccurring.

“Having this presentation was a great idea because, as a generation who has only learned about the Holocaust, it reminds us of how much the world has grown, and what we cannot once more allow to happen,” says junior Natalie Salvador.

The presentation, filled with many sources and details, provides students with insight into life as a Jewish person during the Holocaust.

“I thought the presentation was very informative and put together,” says senior Sara Leon.

“I’ve learned some new facts about the Holocaust and what led to it. It has really opened up my eyes.”

Warshawski was able to detail his memories of when he was in the concentration camps, which gave the audience a more personal lens from which to view a mass tragedy. PAPER Individualizes Academic Support for All Amelie La-Branche News Editor

Students have oftentimes confronted puzzling homework problems at 2 a.m, unable to contact a teacher, staring blankly at their notes, desperately attempting to understand the concept.

Paper, a new resource readily available to all students has emerged. This free virtual tutoring service, in league with the Palm Beach County School District, connects students with online tutors for a plethAora of coursework, from advanced mathematics to English essay reviews.

“Academic support has always been inequitable for students and families,” says Paper CEO Phillip Cutler. “As a teacher, a recurrent theme was that students with access to extra support were typically the ones whose families had the most means; they were rarely the students who needed the help most.”

Wealthier families undoubtedly have access to private tutors and programs inaccessible to others. Paper closes the gap, expanding access to all students, regardless of status.

“Paper acts as support for introverts afraid to ask questions in class and for working students,” says World and U.S. History teacher Frank Torres.

“I’ve seen an improvement in my students’ performance because of the academic help.”

Paper’s success stems from the breadth of knowledge, experience, and diversity embodied by its tutors.

“I found Paper extremely helpful; it gave me assurance that I always have someone to instruct me whenever

I am struggling academically since their program runs 24/7,” says junior Yeonwoo Park. “All the tutors I’ve had were extremely nice and provided amazing explanations. I’m honestly surprised the platform is free to students.”

In the same vein, Cutler adds, “The fidelity of the match is critical. Paper uses elaborate algorithms to pair students with the best available tutor in any specific discipline.”

Providing academic support for students is Paper’s clear goal; however, its support also greatly benefits teachers.

Especially in the past two years, fraught with uncertainty and stress, teachers are burdened in an already demanding profession.

“Teachers have always been spread thin,” says Cutler. “The current expectation of teachers is that they’re always available to support their students.”

Paper is not meant as a replacement for teachers or a source of primary instruction; rather, it provides personalized support when teachers may not be available.

“What’s nice about our platform is that teachers can see which students are getting help and what questions are being asked,” says Cutler. “This resource completes the feedback loop

for teachers and takes weight off their shoulders, since they know Paper supports every student.”

Indeed, when Paper supplements the traditional education of a one-tomany classroom, teachers can identify with which material students may be struggling, and the concepts to be reviewed in the classroom.

“It’s nice to have additional assistance,” adds Torres. “A teacher can’t help 140 students at one time; Paper assists with one-on-one instruction that teachers can’t always provide.”

This personalized instruction is simple to access; students merely have to click the “Ask a Tutor” button beneath a course to chat with a tutor in seconds. Within the session, students can upload homework files or notes. Though tutors will refrain from teaching new material, they can certainly guide students through problems. If a student ever needs to revisit a conversation, past chat logs –

and any accompanying files – are saved within the “Chat” tab, located at the top of the page.

Paper’s various convenient features are a testament to its greatest strength: accessibility.

“I would definitely recommend Paper to other students because it’s a useful resource when you’re studying at home or outside of school,” says Park.

“Waiting to ask your teacher can be a bit frustrating, especially if you have a test the next day.”

Paper’s virtual nature is also a significant asset, as some teachers feel Paper may ease the return to in-person learning.

“Some of my students struggling to transition back to school now have a new online academic element,” says Torres. “Since the school district, and education as a whole, is migrating towards the digital aspect of learning, students can obtain individual instruction through Paper.”

Though student interaction with Paper at Spanish River may be in its infancy, this virtual learning platform is continually developing to a more accessible and supportive form.

“The Paper you are interacting with today is the worst version of Paper,” adds Cutler. “We are committed to constant improvement, and the only way we achieve this is by implementing your feedback.”

Paper undoubtedly serves as an invaluable supplementary resource, well worth the try. Students can rest assured a homework assignment’s latenight perplexities can be overcome by the solace and companionship of Paper.

Do the rich run the world?

Can a higher economic status lead to less consequences? aIn some circumstances, it seems to be that those who have connections in high places and a lot of money can truly get away with anything, despite the severity of the crime. A prime example of this is the late billionaire: Jeffrey Epstein.

Jeffrey Epstein as of August 19, 2019, was found dead in his jail cell, after being sentenced to 45 years in jail, which was basically a life sentence for a man of his age.

For those who do not know the extremities of Epstein’s charges, he was accused of engaging in sexual acts and trafficking minors, some even younger than 16.

These criminal acts occurred in both Manhattan, New York and Palm Beach, Florida, where the age of consent is 17 and 18. For more information on this case, I recommend watching the Netflix

documentary, Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich.

With this, Epstein was friends with many people of high status, such as British royalty, Prince Andrew, and U.S Labor Secretary, Alex Acosta. So, after his death, it was exposed that these friends of his supposedly had connections all around that could potentially help him out; whether or not these friends did help him has not been confirmed.

However, there is speculation on if he was given ‘too fair’ of a deal when Acosta signed off on Epstein to only be sentenced to thirteen months of jail time in 2008 for soliciting a prostitute and procuring a child for

prostitution. Both of which seem to be too severe a crime to be in jail for only thirteen months, as many other felons are charged with much longer sentences for less relentless charges.

For example, some of those who have been charged w i t h marijuana possession w e r e s entence d to as long as two years.

The almost ironic thing about this, is that marijuana is legal in some states, medically a n d recreationally.

However, prostitution and trafficking (of any age) and engaging in any sort of sexual act with a minor is illegal

everywhere!

This vaguely proves that people with less money or connections do not have the ability to get themselves out of a situation like this, regardless of how many lawyers one hires. The fact of the matter is as simple as this: Epstein was powerful, because he had an almost questionable amount of money, as well as the ability to negotiate with others. Epstein’s strategy was to befriend people of extreme wealth, and ultimately blackmail them for his benefit.

Furthermore, societal status is dependent on economic status.

Despite the severity of any crime, in Epstein’s case, the idea that he was able to get away with all the things he had done was humiliating to the victims, as they were and still are unable to obtain complete justice.

Whether or not it is true, the rich should not be able to escape their mistakes simply because they have the superior means to do so.

Unfortunately, the media also now serves as society’s moral guide. The definition of what is considered offensive and what is acceptable. What is right and what is wrong. As a result, our honest tendencies are strained, our sensitivity is heightened, and I now find it difficult to speak freely

without worrying about my words being twisted in a negative light.

With social media, it is too easy to misinterpret someone’s words when you don’t get the full story, but it is even easier to overthink what those words could mean and if they are relevant to you.

On another note, social media is also a channel for movements to raise awareness, individuals to seek security, interacting with others that share similar interests, although it is not always safe, and much more. It has shined light upon body positivity, the normality of mental health, and acceptance of people of all backgrounds, interests, gender, race, etc. But then it also contributes to body dysmorphia, mental health issues, and anonymous bullying or hate crimes.

So, to what extent can social media be considered a global progression? To what extent can it be considered a detriment to society?

Tom Holland Sticks the Win Andrew Garfield Webs on Top Ana Perez Associate Editor

It is not an easy feat to do justice to a beloved and well known character, but Tom Holland has most definitely accomplished it through his work as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU).

From the moment that Peter Parker was introduced to the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, I loved him and I had never had any prior fondness for the character.

Spider-Man was just another superhero to me, but Tom Holland’s character in Civil War contrasted with the all mighty professional heros was by far one of the highlights of the movie. It was just so funny, especially in moments like the airport fight scene when SpiderMan nonchalantly catches Winter Soldier’s metal arm and he says, “Oh cool you have a metal arm,” and the Winter Soldier otherwise known as Bucky just looks so dumbstruck at this kid being able to catch his punch.

Peter Parker’s story from Homecoming to Far From Home to No Way Home is so completely amazing and heartbreaking. From being a kid just wanting to be an Avenger to losing everyone he loves to save the world and him finally understanding the true cost of being a hero.

“You have to both capture the essence of who people believe to be Peter Parker and who people believe to be Spider-Man,” said College and Career Counselor Daniel Keller.

“He’s small yet formidable. Each of the spidermans before him, I think they both were better at one of the alter egos but Tom Holland does both.”

Tobey Maguire was a good Spider-Man but Peter Parker? The dude looked like 30 in the movies.

And Andrew Garfield played a fine Peter Parker but less so with SpiderMan. “The funny thing is Holland went to an American highschool for like a week and no one noticed he wasn’t a student,” said senior Julia Schuessler. “Holland also nails the awkwardness. Tobey Maguire got the awkward, but Garfield was too confident for Peter Parker.”

One of the most relatable moments that struck me about Peter Parker was a particular scene during No Way Home. Peter Parker has just had his identity revealed as SpiderMan and he and his friend get rejected from their dream college of MIT because of it. Instead of calling the admissions office like a normal adult would, Parker goes to wizard Dr. Strange and asks Strange if he can make them forget he is SpiderMan. He doesn’t even attempt to call MIT he just decided yep this is

definitely the best course of action going to a wizard to do magic.

Other wonderful highlights of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker include: “When [Peter Parker, his crush MJ and his best friend Ned] were in Venice and he kept messing up and hitting the bell during a fight scene,” said Keller. “When he had the [Tony Stark] ]glasses and he almost blew up his friend, they don’t separate Peter Parker and Spider-Man. I just like how even though he’s Spider-Man he doesn’t automatically transform into a polished individual.”

Of course while I love Tom Holland and he is clearly t h e

sup erior Spider-Man, the best SpiderMan movie is the one with all three of them: No Way Home.

The way the multiverse is introduced is just so eloquently done. It will be very hard to beat the epic scene in which Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield came through those portals into the living room of Ned’s grandma.

The banter between the three of them was just glorious. Andrew Garfield got his redemption by saying MJ after not being able to save Gwen Stacy. Tobey Maguire got to see Doc Ock without malice finally after so many years of hostility.

“They incorporated the other story lines back in, it came full circle,” said Keller.“There was closure for the other spidermans.

Sometimes you have to make hard decisions but they work out. That’s the underlying message.”

No Way Home was just one beautiful piece of cinema. I absolutely loved it and considering it is one of the top ten grossing movies of all time, I would say I’m not alone in my opinion.

Music Industry Makes Room for KPOP Elle Borstelmann

Arts and Entertainment Editor Korean culture has made a significant appearance in America and all over the world in the past decade, being consumed mainly through music and film. Kpop idols have been capturing the hearts of foreign fans now more than ever through their catchy music and entertaining dances.

The Korean entertainment industry is well known for being rigorous and brutal towards its idols. Before they debut, the idols embark on a training period, consisting of dance and vocal training, to obtain the skills they need to be professional idols. This training period can last years and most trainees enter it at extremely young ages. Not only is the training period rigorous, but they are often overworked to the point where they can faint during p e r for manc e s .

The industry is ruthless but it produces hardworking, entertaining, and well t r a i n e d performers who fans fall in love with.

In the industry, the artists are separated into boy groups, girl groups, and soloists; the groups are often more popular than the soloists compared to in western music. Fans are also able to choose their favorite member of the group

to support, which is also known as their bias. Some of the most popular girl groups are BlackPink, Twice, and Red Velvet. BlackPink had many top charting songs such as Kill This Love, DDU-DU DDUDU, and How You Like That.

They even did a collaboration with Selena Gomez. A member of BlackPink, Lisa, also had a trending song on TikTok, which was in relation to Squid Games videos.

Many fans have come to love the idols that these entertainment companies are shipping out constantly. Music is frequently being put out by multiple groups and most fans don’t have to wait years for their favorite group to make a comeback. Groups usually adhere to concepts that fit their groups aesthetic and make music based on h o w

their members look or act like.

There is so much appeal for Kpop because it is so much more than just music. While the idols perform, they are also

required to dance while singing.

Dancing during performances can be very complex especially when a lot of difficult movements are being carried out. It is an impressive feature which makes f a n s admire these idols for their h a r d work and dedication.

Music videos and performance stages are another entertaining aspect of the groups.

“The music videos are really fun to watch, and each one has a different story, ‘’ said senior Paola Versari. “BTS, for example, has been telling a story through their music videos, since their debut in 2013, about growing up and discovering self love.”

The fame of Kpop has been recognized by many western artists and even brought on collaborations. BTS, otherwise known as Bangtan Boys, considered to be the most popular Kpop boy group, has collaborated with many famous artists such as Megan Thee Stallion, Coldplay, and Halsey. The group is extremely successful in America, which allows them to hold concerts that sell out immediately and even brought on a Grammy award.

When a new group debuts, the entertainment companies cultivate their fandoms with a name as a base to start off the groups fanbase.

Many fans love Kpop because their idols constantly are supplying their fandoms with something new.

“Their companies also have them do various activities such as camping in a group, cooking, and even doing haunted houses together, ‘’ said Versari. “I believe that’s one of the reasons why fans love kpop idols so much, because they get to see them in a different light instead of just on stage.”

The world has chosen to support Kpop idols despite their music being in a different language due to the many unique aspects that they bring to the music industry. Overall, Kpop is a massive hit and is predicted to continue to convert fans quickly as they take over music.

Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls

After establishing her own radio program known as The Betty White Show in the 1940s, she often starred in TV commercials throughout the 50s, kickstarting her production company, Bandy Productions, founded in 1952. With her new company, White created the comedy, Live with Elizabeth, where she not only played the lead role, but acted as producer as well. At the age of only 30, White had already grown into a crucial aspect of American television, acting as both a producer and star of her own program. Throughout the 50s, White was featured on several sitcoms, and even briefly hosted the “Betty White Show” on NBC in 1954. In 1962, White emerged on “the big screen” for the first time as Senator Bessie Adams in the drama film Advise & Consent. White’s name truly soared in the mid-80s with her role as Rose Nylund in her biggest hit, The Golden Girls, that lasted from 1985 to 1992. From then on, White made her way into several hit films, including Lake Placid (1999) and The Proposal (2009).

With her immense popularity as an actress with a comedic persona, White spent her years emphasizing the significance of finding the fun in everyday life, living with no regrets, and seeing the good in all individuals. Not only was White an activist for the oppressed, defying racism after receiving backlash for having a black tap dancer-- Arthur Duncan-- on her 1954 variety talk show, but an animal rights activist dedicated to saving endangered species. Amidst several Emmy Awards, White “has received the National Humanitarian Medal from American Humane, the first national humane organization founded in the United States.” Following her death in late December 2021, ‘The Betty White Challenge’ circulated via social media to carry on her legacy of raising charity for animal shelters and humanitarian organizations. As of mid-January 2022, the #BettyWhiteChallenge has raised over $12 million through Facebook and Instagram.

Betty White accomplished a world’s worth of success in her 99 years of life, from being a teenager chasing a dream to becoming a cherished celebrity notable for her charismatic personality and desire to better the world.

Students Make College Dreams Reality Sophia DiFusco Features Editor

Applying to college can be very daunting, thankfully, Spanish River High School has our own on campus college counselor, Dr. Keller. Dr. Keller’s job is to ultimately help students through the entire college application process.

“Yes! He helped me a lot with the application and made sure I was ready to commit to Vanderbilt,” said Mrs. Spanish River, Mia Simon. “I visited Vaderbuilt about a month before the application was due and decided Vandy was where I wanted to go. Spanish River allowed me to take a very rigorous course load and succeed in those classes as well as encourage me to get involved in extracurricular activities that helped my resume.” If a student is considering Early Decisions, it is recommended to visit as many schools as possible.

“Dr. Keller gets things done A.S.A.P.” said Susie Silberfarb who will be attending Tulane University in the fall.

“He is so reliable and I am so grateful for everything he did for me; because of Spanish River High School, I was able to receive the proper education and study skills to get into my top choice.” There are a multitude of applications including early decision, meaning if accepted to your ED college, all other applications for other colleges must be retracted.

In addition, EA, Early Action, is an application submitted prior to standard decision applications. Carly Fox applied to Syracuse University, and was accepted during their Early Decision round of acceptance.

“I chose my school because of my love for TV production I discovered through SRHS,” said Carly Fox. “First day of that class, I knew it was exactly what I wanted to do in the future, and now I get to live my dreams.” Spanish River has sent students to amazing colleges in-state, and out of state. Zoe Pustilnik has committed to D1 Cross Country & Track at the University of Central Florida, majoring in Kinesiology.

“Running for Coach Doug Horn gave me the best training of all runners in Boca Raton, setting me apart allowing

me to stand out as a recruit,” said Putstilnik. “I chose UCF so I could shine my own light and make an impact on the team. The girls on the team and the coach really stood out to me, and the school is gorgeous. I’m excited for all I will accomplish in the next four years as a student athlete.” Congratulations to Zoe, as well as Ava Argentina and Ryan Palmer who will be majoring in Early Childhood at UCF. The girls volleyball team at Spanish River will miss senior Bella Guzzetta.

However, Guzzetta plans to continue playing volleyball and has committed to Ohio Wesleyan University and plans to major in Sports News Broadcasting.

“Going through the recruitment process I just absolutely loved Ohio Wesleyan,” said Guzzetta, “I got the homey vibe instantly and love my experience there. I love the school as much as I love the volleyball program.”

Congratulations to Jane Halpern who will be majoring in Political Science and minoring in Psychology or International Relations at Emory University and congratulations Ariella Pollay who has been accepted to American University and plans to major in Government and Psychology.

In addition, Dylan Cohen is excitedabout his exceptance to Duke University. Dylan says, “ I chose to apply to Duke because they combine top academic opportunities and a fun atmosphere,” said Dylan Cohen. Spanish River helped achieve this through allowing me to take on a rigorous course load, participate in and start clubs, and overall having a competitive environment. At Duke, I plan to major in Economics with a concentration in Finance.”

You’re Invited to A Prom to Remember Lyndsey Roth Editor in Chief

Spring is coming, and prom season is getting closer and closer. Spanish River High School’s new club, A Prom to Remember, was created for the purpose of helping raise money to provide an unforgettable prom for students battling cancer. Many seem to take prom for granted; so the idea of dressing up and waiting for the big day can be exciting for those who may have little to look forward to.

This organization, A Prom to Remember, has been around since 2009, when Florida local, Brandon Opre, the founder of this foundation, had an idea: “I figured we would invite all the cancer patients in my local Fort Lauderdale area to this special Prom,” said Opre. “I realized there are many other kids in the neighboring counties as well- I wanted to invite them all!”

With this, the charitable organization was born, and now, the disadvantaged youth across South Florida and Cleveland get to enjoy this incredible experience.

A Prom to Remember engages in other events in addition to prom such as their annual Blue Martini Invitational.

At this event, sponsors and volunteers play golf, drink, eat, and partake in a

silent auction to ultimately raise money for children’s hospitals. The money raised not only goes towards creating the most memorable night possible, but it is also used to fund local hospitals

and word of mouth. Their mission is to ultimately raise money to create an unforgettable prom experience for those with cancer.

collecting donations. Once the money is raised, they will donate the collected amount to the children’s hospital, and work with them to invite the children and plan the event accordingly.

The idea behind this organization essentially allows students at River to join in on an act of community service that helps those afflicted with cancer.

As COVID-19 has unfortunately disrupted the ability to partake in many large in-person events like this, now that restrictions have become more lenient, River’s new club plans to make this long awaited event a memorable one.

Each prom held has a different theme, past themes have been: Vintage Circus, Casino Night, Superheroes, Alice in Wonderland, and Candyland.

As River has previously come up with spectacular and unique themes, hopefully they will put forth their best efforts to make this prom an even more memorable event than the ones before.

However, Floridians in the Panhandle couldn’t believe their eyes for what they saw on January 2, 2022: snow!

Being a Floridian herself, Freshman Jacinda Kosier most explicitly describes snow as “a pure white only seen in nature.”

The temperature change in the days prior and subsequent to the snowfall were recorded to be elevated. The high and low temperatures of January 1 were recorded to be 93 degrees, and 50 degrees fahrenheit respectively.

The high of January 3 was 89 degrees fahrenheit, with a low of 51 degrees fahrenheit. The showers showed their first signs at 3 AM, while leaving the city in awe. It lasted for five hours, cooling down the temperature of Panhandle, and

beginning the New Year off with an unusual start. Moreover, the total amount of snow summed up to be nearly 1.5 inches.

Freshman Jacinda Kosier states, “It opens our minds to many possibilities,” and secretly wishes Floridians too could get school off due to snowstorms.

Oiliviana Russ, from Kansas, contrarily believes it’s a matter of great inconvenience to reside somewhere it snows often. “It’s time consuming and exhausting as there is a lot of effort which goes behind it;” she further explains. Needless to say: grass, indeed, is greener on the other side. People from all parts of Florida usually hope for it to snow because of how scarce it is.

Fortunately, many of our students will get to see snow for the first time on their trip to Iceland with A.P. Human Geography teacher, Kevin Turner. Comparatively, it is much more likely to snow in Panhandle as opposed to other

parts of the state, especially South Florida. Palm Beach, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale have not yet encountered a snowfall in two hundred years, with an exception in 1977. In fact, the average monthly snow in Florida as a whole is zero.

This is predominantly because of the state’s low altitude, tropical climate, and humidity.

The most recent occurrence of snowfall, however, was in Tallahassee four years ago, which shut down most schools and workplaces. The snow summed up to a total of 2 inches, slightly more than that in the Panhandle. Other rare showers were reported on January 13, 1852 in Jacksonville; December 1, 1876 in Punta Russa; February 14, 1892 in Pensacola; and December, 1989 in Pinellas.

The same year was recognized to be the “White Christmas” in Jacksonville’s history. Moreover, the heaviest snow in Florida’s history was observed on March 6, 1957, accumulating a total

of four inches of snow. Among many individuals who adore snow, History teacher Bailey Roberts from California went snowboarding to enjoy the amenities snow has to offer.

“Snow puts you in touch with nature and other such elements,” he continues, delightfully appreciating snow. Contrarily, co-founder of the Environmental Club at Spanish River High School, Anastasia Soulianova, believes the snow is a pronounced concern as it indicates the exacerbated situation of climate change.

“We can all take small initiatives to help the situation, like turning off the lights when not necessary.” Indeed, it’s the little efforts which can have the biggest impact.

Every flurry of snow in Florida is ever so diligently reserved in its history. This once-in-a-blue moon occurring is much awaited by Floridians because of the value it holds in their hearts.

NFTs Are Taking the World by Storm Dominic D’Arelli Staff Reporter The new craze flooding the internet right now is something called NFTs. Although they are very popular, not many people truly understand what exactly they are.

The acronym NFT stands for nonfungible token, to explain what the word “non-fungible” means requires the knowledge of what the word fungible means.

When something is fungible it is interchangeable meaning it can be divided into smaller units to form the same value. For example, a one hundred dollar bill is fungible because it can be divided into smaller bills to form the same amount of value as the one hundred dollar bill itself. Nonfungible is the exact opposite, it is not interchangeable meaning it represents unique assets owned by

a specific person. The Mona Lisa is an example of something that is non-fungible because there is only one and even if it is copied it will never be the same as the authentic painting. Items that are non-fungible are not replaceable, there is only one of them.

Although the Mona Lisa is an example of an NFT, the new way they are b e i n g bought and sold is mostly over the internet. An NFT can be used by a small artist or designer in order to ensure that they have full copyright over their specific artwork, this promotes copyright and originality of certain assets.

This ultimately motivates people to buy art from smaller artists and promote their work. So, how exactly do NFTs work? When one purchases an NFT they are giving their artwork a unique identity and a digital certificate that even if sold, you will still have the copyright for your work.

The new and popular NFTs are not artwork at all. The first even tweet made

by Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter, sold for roughly 2 million dollars.

That tweet is now an NFT because it was purchased by someone else,

Jack Dorsey still owns the tweet that he posted but it is now purchased in the name of the buyer. NBA Top Shots is taking advantage of the new NFT craze, they began selling video clips of famous players making plays.

Someone purchased a clip of LeBron James for roughly 208 thousand dollars. A man named Vignesh Sundaresan bought over 69 million dollars worth of NFT artwork. This purchase was by far the most money spent of NFTs so far.

In the end, NFTs promote originality of work and allow small creators artists to earn money by selling their work while still having copyright over them. They create a unique digital signature for one’s work and can be bought and sold for either real money or crypto currency. Overall the way we view value has changed and NFTs are a new way to view the value of things, especially online.

Ana Perez Associate Editor For Americans vacation is a luxury, a fun experience that the average American family will have once a year. But for people in othe r countries w h o work i n

t o u rism it is their livelihood. For Americans when the pandemic hit, the world shut down, and no one was able to travel, while a nuisance it was no big deal. But the people that live and work in countries such as Honduras, Jamaica, or Mexico, tourism shutting down meant no work, no money, and now difficulty surviving.

“The port fees, everytime a cruise ship stops they pay a fee,” says AICE Travel and Tourism Teacher Michelle Berke. “Indirect income tourists getting off the boat and getting goods and services. Tour operators that take tourists around. So all of the people that work in those industries are left to do what?”

It is devastating to those countries. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the travel industry lost $4.5 trillion US dollars and one in four new jobs across the world are in tourism. So to be without that for over a year drastically changes a country.

“The unemployment rates sky rocket,” says Berke. “People struggle and put stress on the government.”

Roatan, Honduras is a port in which up to 3 cruises dock at a time.

It is a very small series of mountainous islands off the coast of mainland Honduras. The island has two main industries: fishing and tourism.

Tourism employs people at the nature preserves, the beach, the restaurants at the dock, the drivers who take the tourists to and from the boats.

Almost every person on that island worked in some aspect with tourism but when the pandemic struck they were out of work for a year and a half, as a result many were forced to move. The poverty rate increased dramatically during the pandemic. This is the same story for many other tourist spots in the Caribbean.

According to the World Travel and Tour-

ism Council, Honduras experienced a 48% decrease in the Travel and Tourism GDP. Not to mention, a decrease in the jobs in tourism. Before the pandemic, one in ten jobs in Honduras were in tourism.

Looking at the changes a bit closer to home, Florida also took a big hit in the travel industry.

“Most people that go on cruises sail through Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Carnival,” says Berke. “They go to our restaurants, to go our businesses and it impacts us” According to the Tampa Bay Times, Florida experienced a 39% decrease in the number of visitors. From the cruise ship industry in South Florida to Orlando theme parks in Central Florida, Florida’s economy relies on tourism a great deal.

So people have adjusted. New COVID regulations put into place in every aspect of travel. Masks and vaccines are required as well as negative tests on top of it to even board a Royal Caribbean cruise.

“So what I noticed that got me the most is how common attractions, especially public ones are not accessible easily anymore,” said senior Ana Luisa Alves de Souza Silva about her trip to New York City.

“We wanted to visit a few tall buildings in New York like the Empire states, but we basically couldn’t enter in most of them because of the number of people that could attend per hour” Alves de Souza Silva also recounts her layover in Colombia.

“It was the biggest airport there and I have been there in the past and it’s always full of people,” said Alves de Souza Silva.

“But when we were there, there was like no one in the airport.”

Ultimately even with the disruptions to the economy and their way of life, people move on and they adapt. Some have returned to the tourism industry as it opens back up and some have found other jobs in new places. When it comes down to it, survival means adapting.

COVID-19 Persistently Torments Lives Aiden Rebinstein Face-off Editor

COVID-19 originally began in March 2020 and has changed our lives and the world around us since.

Sadly, the virus has modified and transformed itself over and over again, leading to the continuous creation of new strands. While additional strands are nothing new, Omicron, the newest variant, is unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Believed to have originated from South Africa, Omicron is spreading as rapidly as ever. In Florida alone, Covid cases jumped roughly 40% from 302,179 to 423,150 in just one week, primarily due to Omicron.

In addition to being severely contagious, Omicron also is believed to have the ability to infect those who have already previously been infected. It was previously believed that in terms of Covid, those infected had herd immunity, meaning having resistance due to a past infection. Experts say with Omicron, this is no longer the case. This had resulted in an unfortunate trend that is common almost everywhere

conditions like Asthma.

Omicron’s spreading capability has also really harmed and negatively affected the travel industry.

Covid has been harming the travel industry, which includes hotels, airlines, cruise lines, etc since it first began. However, being that Omicron spreads so rapidly, it has really taken a toll on these businesses. For instance, a Norwegian cruise ship was canceled mid-voyage. Many passengers aboard the ship came down with Covid, preventing the passengers on the ship from being able to get off at the ports. Covid has also really affected airlines as well as travel restrictions. Since Omicron is extremely transmissible, many are reluctant to travel. Even those who wish to travel have had issues with plans, as many flights, hotel reservations, and other means of traveling are frequently being canceled. This resulted in many travel issues, especially for students over winter break.

“Over break my travel plans got canceled time and time again,” said sophomore Xavier Pelish. “We had

In just half of January across the U.S, millions of Covid cases were reported. On January 11, the U.S reported over a million cases just that day. This unexpected jump in cases has affected absolutely everything such as schools and hospitals.

For example, teachers and students across the country, specifically Chicago, are almost refusing to attend schools. Students instituted walkouts, leaving in-person school and fighting for online learning for their own safety. This is ultimately due to schools being a place of high risk, as Omicron is extremely contagious.

Omicron has also really affected hospitals, especially in Florida.

Sadly, about 30% of Florida’s population remains unvaccinated. While Omicron’s effects are much less severe than previous strands, as previously stated, it is much more contagious. This has left hospitals with an influx of patients, many of which they don’t have room or equipment for. For example, hospitals are extremely short on ventilators, which are essential for those struggling with worse symptoms or those with

first planned to go to Washington, however, due to the high risk of flying there, my family and I were forced to stay home. We also sadly weren’t able to spend the holidays with family as many were sick with Covid or did not want to risk getting it.”

Stories like these occurred throughout Spanish River High School, Florida, and the world as a whole. Palm Beach County alone has thousands of new cases daily, many of which likely came down with Omicron. While Omicron is very easily received, with the right precautions it is preventable. That being said, receiving vaccinations and wearing the right equipment may be the safest way to prevent obtaining this virus.

Last season Headley was the head coach of Coral Springs High in Broward County. The team went 3-7, beating teams like West Boca 4720 and North Broward Prep 19-13.

Although their record hadn’t gone as planned, Coach Ian provided the team with sponsorship from the brand, “Battle”, and valuable Coach Headly in Action! coaching with his Coral Springs coaching staff who are also coming to Spanish River. These Coaches are Coach Jay, Coach Dub, and Coach progression of this years’ players.

“We’re gonna work hard. I’m here to Dav. try and develop players,” said Coach

Headley. “We are trying to win as he can during his time coaching. games and possibly get some players “I just expect us to play hard, be into schools and things like that. physical, and be very very detailed But overall, I just want to make the with everything we do,” said Coach Ian. “This year I want us to play with toughness, I want us to be tough” This year The Spanish River Sharks will play Pompano, Lake Worth, Hollywood Hills, Boca High, West Boca, John I. Leonard, Olympic Heights, and Miami Hialeah Lakes.

It is obvious that losing games is not a part of Headly’s plan this year.

“I mean just the potential. There’s a lot of potential here,” said Coach Headley “You got the middle school across the street (Omni Middle School), got the Boca Braves right there (In Boca). I’ve worked here before, I know a lot of D1 kids that have come out of here so I think it (Spanish River) is a sleeping giant.”

Georgia wins it all vs Alabama Matthew Portmess Sports Editor

This year, football fans witnessed the College Football Championship on January 10, with the Alabama Crimson Tide playing the Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams at a thirteen: one record came into the game knowing it would be a close one.

They met earlier in December, as Alabama came out with a win: 41-24.

The first half of the game started off mostly slow-tempted, which led it to being 6-9 with Alabama winning at the start of the second half. At half time, Alabama was stuck now that their top two wide receivers were not playing. Jameson Williams had a presumed knee injury, two days later it was confirmed he tore his ACL. While John Metchie, had also torn his ACL around late December in a championship game for the SEC (the division Metchie plays for).

Starting off the second half, Georgia was running well, but shortly after, they were stopped and forced to punt the ball. Alabama, after getting the ball, was set to kick a field goal, however shortly after

the play began, it ended. Defensive Tackle Jalen Carter blocked the kick leading for the bulldogs to get in a good field position. With their upcoming momentum, Georgia on first down ran the ball all the way to the ten yard line. Shortly after, they pounded the ball in for a

touchdown, making the score 13-9, with the bulldogs in the lead.

Alabama soon after drove down the field, and Bryce Young (Alabama Crimson Tide Quarterback) threw a 40-yard pass, leading to a field

Alabama gets shut down, and was forced to punt where Georgia gets another touchdown. Bennet threw a 20-yard screen to tight end Brock Browers, shutting the crimson tide up, making it 26-18. Down a touchdown, Bryce Young, looking to get Alabama another consecutive championship, threw a contested pass, falling into the hands of Kelee Ringo. Not only did Ringo acquire the turnover, he brought it to the end-zone; receiving a picksix; sealing the game for Georgia.

Georgia fans were going crazy in the stands, as they won their first championship in 40 years. Georgia Head Coach, Kirby Smart, has to be one of the happiest people on Earth right now. Not only did he finally beat Nick Saban (many would consider that to be their rival coach) and Alabama, but he also delivered a national championship, his first at that. Many would consider that a rare accomplishment. Smart was already known to be a phenomenal coach, but he is now referred to by some as one of the greats in college leading score of 18-13.

Antonio Brown Takes a Blow From the Bucs Allyson Greenberg Sports Editor

There has been a long time concern about the effects of continuing to play sports after having a concussion multiple times. Football is notorious for players getting a concussion while playing. Being repeatedly hit in the head can lead to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a condition which can result in erratic behavior and later on death. CTE for short, holds professional athletes at some of the highest risks for developing this condition/disease, especially football players and boxers, considering both revolve repetitive blows to the head. The main issue with CTE is that it can not be identified whilst the person is alive, therefore people don’t know that their brain is slowly

Unaware that they are losing cognitive functions, they will start to experience mood swings and erratic behavior.

There has been research done to show results of these continuous head injuries having been linked

to some domestic violence cases of athletes. Dr. Robert Stern, a Neurology professor at Boston University conducted a study that has shown proof of men who have sustained head trauma and injuries showing violent behavior post the injuries but not prior.

Antonio Brown, an NFL wide receiver, has had multiple accounts of domestic violence whilst being in the league. Two women have made accusations toward Brown on accounts of rape and assault. He had an argument with a truck driver which led to assault and battery charges. Brown also has recently used a fake vaccination card. Over his years in the NFL, he has been suspended, put on probation, and received punishment for his multiple actions that have embarrassed the name of the NFL as an organization.

As of recently, Antonio Brown has been in and out of the news. He has been recently from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after his outburst on the field at the January 1st game against the New York Jets. After telling Buccaneers Head Coach Arians he could no longer play due to his injured ankle, Arians responded by telling him to either get back out on the field or

leave. From Brown’s point of view, Arians came across as aggressive and inconsiderate of his injury. He stormed off the field midgame holding up a peace sign whilst taking off and throwing his jersey, pads, and undershirt into the crowd.

But from Arians’s side of the story, Brown was complaining about not getting the ball, and Arians didn’t really care to hear it. He told him to either keep playing or leave. Arians was already on edge with Brown due to his agents asking for two million in incentives in his contract earlier in the week. So his “complaining” was the tip of the iceberg. From Brown’s position if he was playing hurt and not getting the ball, then what was the point of him playing and hurting his ankle even more.

Now the question stands whether Brown’s strange behavior of violence and his recent outburst is a result of multiple head injuries over his years throughout playing or is he a crazy, egotistical, demanding athlete.

“He most likely suffers from CTE and could have used proper care to handle the situation, instead of storming off the field like a child,” said junior Jaden Moran.

Will this be the end of his career?

Junior Sander Greenfield says “Antonio Brown has had a very questionable past with his trouble

with the law and keeping good relationships with teammates a n d

c o a c h e s .”

“He is one of the most talented wide receivers ever, no one is doubting that but the tantrum he threw on the sideline and the way he stormed out on his team he will most likely never play football again.”

Other students don’t believe this will be the end of his career due to his insane amount of talent.

Junior Alex Rosenthal says “I believe he will still play in the league because his talent is extraordinary and teams could use a player like him to help them.”
