LOVE CURLY THE HOUSE OF SENSES par Chloé Bonnie More Un peu à l’image de ses dessins, petits, ou grands formats, Love Curly nous inspire un sentiment partagé entre euphorie et timidité maladive. C’est une ambiguïté qui ressemble à notre époque, et qui plus est, à celle de cette artiste qui en février 2022 se retrouve contrainte à fuir son pays avec une simple valise et quelques effets personnels en poche, dont le dessin. Comme elle a pu me le confier lors de notre rencontre, ce dessin, ses couleurs, ses yeux, ses nœuds, ses grands sourires, cette ambivalence dans le trait, c’est la seule chose que nul n’a pu lui retirer. Dessinatrice, Love Curly travaille principalement dans la mode lorsqu’elle vit encore en Ukraine. Pour des marques, elle dessine des motifs, elle imagine des collections, leurs couleurs et leurs formes. C’est ce qu’on retrouve immédiatement dans son style, un habillement complet. C’est également pour cette raison que certaines de ses œuvres se composent comme des trompe l’œil. En effet, l’artiste convoque de manière récurrente des formes animales ou des insectes, tels que le papillon, ou la coccinelle. Les grands yeux qui connotent aussi bien une inquiétante étrangeté qu’une joie éhontée et que l’on retrouve d’un dessin à l’autre rappellent notamment les ocelles, ces motifs qui paraissent sur les ailes de papillons. Comme des grands yeux, les ocelles imitent leurs prédateurs afin de les protéger. Une parade de survie qui pourrait ici faire écho à l’utilité première d’un vêtement, conçu d’abord pour nous protéger, avant de nous créer une identité de toute pièce. Une seconde peau.

Ce sont ces couleurs vives et ses formes ambivalentes qui la protègent. Elles reflètent sa réalité : une condition en proie à une réalité politique et d’actualité, dont il est alors difficile d’échapper sans qu’on y soit identifié. Le dessin permet aussi bien à Love Curly de se protéger que de s’affirmer à travers cette nouvelle réalité. Basés principalement sur ses émotions, ses dessins lui permettent en partie de garder une connexion avec le reste du monde malgré la violence qui le constitue.

Si le pastel et les tons employés pour le dessin provoquent une douceur immédiate, il s’y cache pourtant une certaine violence. Assez organique et puissant, l’érotisme qui se dégage du travail de Love Curly met en lumière aussi bien le bruit, que le silence qui ponctuent notre époque. L’artiste est tentée d’adoucir la réalité mais tient tout autant à provoquer le regard, à travers ses collages et un emprunt surréaliste, sur la violence qui traverse sa vie. C’est cette tension qui crée l’œuvre. En effet, l’œuvre de Love Curly procède comme une thérapie, au soin et au dépassement de soi. Rassemblés à la galerie Strouk, soit dans un même lieu assez grand pour les accueillir pour la première fois depuis l’exil de l’artiste, ils sont pour elles dans cet espace comme une maison dans laquelle elle nous invite à partager cette réalité sous tension. Ainsi, elle s’empare de l’espace de la galerie, dans lequel elle se sent en sécurité, entourée de ses rêves qui tirent entre limbes et réalité.

LOVE CURLY THE HOUSE OF SENSES Text by Chloé Bonnie More A bit like her drawings, small or large, Love Curly inspires us with a feeling divided between euphoria and sickly shyness. It is an ambiguity that resembles our time, and moreover for Love Culry who, in February 2022, finds herself forced to flee her country with a simple suitcase and a few personal effects in her pocket, including her great gift: drawing. As she confided to me during our meeting, this drawing, its colors, its eyes, its knots, its big smiles, this ambivalence in the line, it is the only thing that nobody could take away from her. As designer, Love Curly worked mainly in the fashion industry when she still lived in Ukraine. For brands, she draws patterns, she imagines collections, their colors and shapes. This is what you can immediately see in her drawings, a complete clothing. It is also for this reason that some of her works are composed as trompe l’oeil. Indeed, the artist recurrently summons animal forms or insects, such as the butterfly, or the ladybug. The large eyes - which connote a disturbing strangeness as well as a shameless joy - that can be found from one drawing to the next are reminiscent of the ocelli, the patterns that appear on the wings of butterflies. Like big eyes, they imitate their predators in order to protect themselves. A parade of survival that could echo here the first utility of a garment, conceived at first to protect us, before creating us an identity of any piece. A second skin.

This is how the drawings are arranged in the space. Like a second skin for this artist in exile, forced into political and social destitution. It is in these bright colors and ambivalent forms that she finds protection. They reflect her reality: a condition prey to a political and current reality, from which it is then difficult to escape without being identified with it. The drawing allows Love Curly to protect herself as well as to assert herself through this new reality. Based mainly on her emotions, her drawings allow her to keep a connection with the rest of the world despite the violence that constitutes it. If the pastel and the tones used for the drawing provoke an immediate softness, there is nevertheless a certain violence hidden in it. Quite organic and powerful, the eroticism that emerges from Love Curly’s work highlights both the noise and the silence that punctuate our time. The artist is tempted to soften reality but is just as keen to provoke the gaze, through her collages and a surrealist borrowing, on the violence that runs through her life. It is this tension that creates the work. Indeed, Love Curly’s work proceeds like a therapy, to the care and the surpassing of oneself. Gathered at Strouk gallery, thus in the same place big enough to welcome them for the first time since the artist’s exile, they are for her in this space like a house in which she invites us to share this reality under tension. Thus, she takes possession of the gallery, in which she feels safe, surrounded by her dreams that shoot between limbo and reality.
