The design is comprised from an ensemble which unites functional utilization with social and luxury living quarters to answer for the high demand of housing in Chennai, The majority of living volume is assigned to house slum dwellers who currently live in “informal homes”. The social housing doe sn’t only offer former slum dwellers basic neces sities like potable water, sanitation and a healthy living environment but the new homes also create the opportunity to reinvent their standards of living.

Additionally, living next to the Buckingham canal in Chennai strengthens the aware ness of residents about the vantages of water. Resolving issues related to droughts and floods the Water Tank Housing answers to the demand for housing without deteriorating negative effects of current rapid urbanisation of Chennai. The de sign functions in tandem with, rather than in op position to, the forces of urbanization and water. For cooling and ventilation, the floorplan and orientation of the building is organized to play into the forces of nature like wind and sha de. Corridors are aligned with the predominant wind currents and weaved through the struc tures layout, passively cooling and supplying the building with fresh air. The corridors gui de horizontal currents of air while wind towers supply vertical air currents to each floor level. Overhangs create shade and additional cooling.

As a reflection and respect to former culture the design takes great inspiration from two local for ces to achieve a built legacy of contextual design. The famous historical Chennai water temples, and Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi’s city of Aranya. Chennai water temples have influenced the design in finding a balance between the adaptation of local culture and water retention techniques. The deepe ned courtyard and the steps that lead to it create an open public space, which in times of flooding allows room for excess water while the steps and basins filter and store water for future droughts.

For plans to develop a biotope on an estate south-west of Sint-Oedenrode, designed to house clients with a slight mental disability, Dick van de Kaa from Gaaf Groen Wonen B.V. was still missing a design for a multifunctional community building. The building had to be future proof and adaptable to a variety of functions. But most impor tantly, where clients with a slight mental handicap were able to work and personally develop, in an environment that is centred around the client’s well-being. Design considerations have been determined by research on the positive and negative triggers of built environments for people with a slight mental disability. The research concludes that the best stimulated environment for this targeted audience is one that has a predictable structure on the exterior, and a tranquil appearance on the interior. Three distinguishable volumes form the design. The design utilises an old chicken barn which is repur posed as two workspaces running parallel to the main entrance hall. The repurposed structure is constructed of caulk hemp cross wall elements. The glass top entrance hall extorts a sense of transparency and openness to anyone who approaches the building, giving an insight of what is going on inside before needing to enter the building itself.

The new building was to blend in with its woodsy environ ment but also respect the estates traditional architecture. Repurposing the old chicken barn meant deepening its floor to ensure a usable room height according to building code. This formed the idea to extend the floor to the other rooms, deepening the entire structure which fused it into the Thelandscape.extremewall

thickness not only works for the passi ve house functioning, but also creates deep window sills ensuring more privacy.

The layout and room dividers allow the building to adapt to different functions and scenarios. This adaptability allows the building to contribute to the development of the target group, when a tailored workspace is demanded by individual or multiple clients.

The grid of the structure allows for consecutive expansion and continuation of the current volumes. Due to this flexi bility the design can be expanded in the future as desired, in an efficient and waste-friendly manner.
