ANNUAL REPORT

Mission

Vision

Our mission is to provide children with a high quality, 21st Century education. We provide each student and teacher with a laptop loaded with educational content designed for learning. We work with participating schools to implement a comprehensive teachers’ training plan and sustainable connectivity in an effort to facilitate meaningful, connected learning.

To be an educational program of excellence for all students between the first and sixth grades of elementary school through the integration of technology into the educational process with the support of the public and private sectors in the country.

How do we do this? We work with six components to create a comprehensive and sustainable education program. We focus on the design, execution and monitoring of projects in an effort to streamline the education process and expand our program to reach more children in the region..

Banco LAFISE BANCENTRO Board of Directors

The Best in CSR In 2016, Euromoney, one of the most renowned international economic publications, recognized Banco LAFISE as “The Best Bank in Latin America in Corporate Social Responsibility.” We are very grateful for this honor, as we continue to educate children in the region. Rob Dwyer, Euromoney’s editor for Latin America and the Caribbean, stated the cooperation we promote is “a great example of the effectiveness of a public-private association.” This distinction is added to other recognitions we have received, such as the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (COSEP) and a “Great Enterprise in the Educational Category” granted by the Nicaraguan Union for Corporate Responsibility (UNIRSE). The recognitions received in 2016 are the result of our joint efforts that transcend borders.

For example: - Together with the Mexican NGO “Mamá Digital”, we organized a conference titled “Coexistence in the Digital Era.” - In cooperation with the Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology (FUNDECYT-PCTEX) from Extremadura, Spain, we organized a “Programathon” which focused on developing educational programs. - Together with the University of Managua (UdeM), we implemented the second “Reparathon for Education” and provided maintenance to 4,294 XO laptops. We thank God, the educational community, our volunteers and donors, the Ministries of Education and all those who make our work possible. We dedicate these awards to them for their support in this educational journey.

Support in the classroom

I am particularly convinced this program works and that the future of Nicaragua will be based on the quality of education we provide to our children. In addition, I am convinced classes will be more engaging and dynamic. The use of technology in the learning process is a reality and we must take advantage of it to improve education in our country.” Ms. Melba López, Delegate from the Ministry of Education (MINED), Jinotega

Student Initiatives Story-Telling Campaign: We develop creativity by promoting the creation and illustration of children’s stories. - One hundred new stories created - One hundred stories translated into Miskito Students Facilitators Pa r t i c i p a t i n g students give technical and pedagogical support to their classmates and teachers.

“For the past two years, I have been a student facilitator. I help my teacher use the XO Laptop in class and I also help to repair the laptops. This year, as part of the Sustainable Schools Plan, I taught classmates, teachers and some parents about repairing the XO laptops. Honestly, I feel satisfied seeing the happy faces of all students when we return their repaired computers. Maynor Castillo, 6th grade student Escuela Santa Clara de Asís, Managua, Nicaragua Donor: Fundación San Antonio de Monte Tabor

12

Community School Projects (PEC, Spanish acronym)

We created the Community School Projects (PEC), which allow the students to respond to the needs of the community. The students use their XO laptops to plan and implement these projects. For example, they have used the XO laptops to conduct research and to document their projects and progress. PECs are a way to encourage collaborative learning and problem solving. PECs provide students with a sense of belonging in the community, as they work closely with teachers, directors, parents, and other students to solve a real need.
