The leaves are browning and there’s a chill in the air. While the falling temperatures means I can finally wear my new #AVintheAM hoodie (yeah!) ... it also means that fall is nearly upon us. As the Thanksgiving holiday draws closer, I’ve started to contemplate what I’m most thankful for this year.

First, I’m grateful for my contacts.

My network of personal connections and AV professionals has beautifully co-mingled and I’m so happy I can call people from my work-life friends. I had a family emergency during ISE this year and was literally 7,252 miles from where I needed and wanted to be. But who made it all better? My #AVTweeps.

Being with all of you is like being with family, and there’s no one better in a crisis than my AV family.

I’m also thankful that the pro AV industry has a plethora of groups to join. There’s a place for everyone to gather and make new connections.

Whether it’s being involved in the Digital Signage Federation, the AV User Group, or the AVIXA Women’s Council (to name a few), you’re bound to make new friends. These groups provide forums for networking and educational sessions, and facilitate working relationships like no other.

QSC Acquires Attero Tech In a move expected to bolster its Q-SYS audio, video and control family of offerings, QSC has acquired Attero Tech, a developer of networked AV endpoints and I/O peripherals. QSC says it will also boost the company’s development capabilities, with Attero Tech’s Fort Wayne-based engineering staff joining the QSC team. The agreement was announced on Sept. 30.

“This acquisition is a natural next step for our organizations given our long relationship, highly compatible portfolios, and the exceptional shared values and company cooperation that have developed over the last several years,” said Jatan Shah, chief operating and technology officer, QSC. “Both QSC and Attero Tech were early adopters of network audio transport technology, including CobraNet, Dante and AES67,” Shah continued. “In addition, when QSC expanded the control capabilities of the Q-SYS Ecosystem in 2017, it allowed Attero Tech to become the first manufacturer partner to independently develop Q-SYS Control integration plug-ins, and Attero Tech has since developed 20 plug-ins for their portfolio of I/O devices.”

TJ Adams, vice president of systems product strategy and development at QSC, noted, “Adding the Attero Tech peripherals to the greater Q-SYS Ecosystem will expand existing options for integration endpoints today, and enlist this new engineering talent pool to accelerate the pace of future software innovation and native endpoints for the platform.”

news Yorktel Launches Subsidiary Focused on Telehealth Communications Yorktel is spinning off its healthcare practice to form a new company called Caregility.

The company will comprise Yorktel’s entire healthcare practice team and will provide end-to-end virtual care and communication solutions to the healthcare industry. Both Caregility and Yorktel will be separate subsidiaries of YTC Holdings.

“We are proud of what Yorktel has accomplished in the development of UHE, our telehealth platform, and its associated applications and solutions,” said Ron Gaboury, CEO of Yorktel and Caregility. “Our initial investments enabled us to establish a robust product road map, and we are excited to see where we can take the line of business. L-Acoustics Creates Future of Sound Scholarship To mark the 35th anniversary of its founding, L-Acoustics has created the Audio Engineering Society Dr. Christian Heil Future of Sound scholarship, a stipend of $5,000 offered to graduate students in the field of audio engineering who are members of the AES. The scholarship will be presented annually to students who demonstrate curiosity and dedication to shaping the future of sound.

“The professional sound industry has evolved greatly and I’m proud to have been able to contribute to that,” said Heil, who founded L-Acoustics. “It’s an honor to help young talent who, through this scholarship, will continue pushing the industry forward.”

In keeping with Heil’s record of shaping the industry through creative innovation, the Dr. Christian Heil Future of Sound scholarship will seek out students with approaches that may belie conventions or call on bodies of scientific knowledge outside the traditional realm of audio. Students who have pursued an undergraduate course of study in an area other than audio are encouraged to apply in the interest of enriching cross-disciplinary thinking and exchanges to further the state of the art.

“L-Acoustics has a longstanding involvement with AES, making regular contributions as an active member of the Technical Committee on Acoustics and Sound Reinforcement, publishing papers and contributing to tutorial and workshop sessions at conventions,” added L-Acoustics director of scientific outreach Etienne Corteel. “Creating this scholarship is an expression of our continued commitment to AES and to the evolution of the industry.”

The inaugural scholarship was given to Ben Creelman, a McGill University student pursuing a Master of Music degree in the field of sound recording.

Stampede is planning to rebrand itself as Exertis Pro AV. The change was announced in early October at the 2019 Stampede Vendor Summit in Buffalo, NY. Tim Griffin, group managing director of Exertis, and Kevin Kelly, president and CEO of Stampede, each took the stage in a room full of manufacturing partners to make the announcement. “To be a homogenous brand is almost going to be impossible,” Griffin said.

But Exertis, whose parent company, DCC Technology, purchased Stampede in July 2018, is up to the challenge as it has been through this before while making a slew of acquisitions over the last decade.

Griffin added that using a single Exertis umbrella brand will allow the company to achieve economies of scale, while also allowing for the “beauty of a customer-centric, local, accountable, empowered, and agile business.”

“We’ve been doing the Stampede brand for more than 20 years. This change is meant to reflect the evolution of the business,” Kelly added.

The branding initiative was revealed at the Integrate Expo in Australia in August and will roll out in the United States over the next year.

As children head back to class, FSR is once again helping to make sure those kids have the supplies they need to successfully complete projects for the school year ahead.

As a dedicated supporter of the United Way of Passaic County’s ongoing Backpacks 4 Kids initiative, FSR wanted to ensure students in this New Jersey county received much-needed supplies for class. news Transformations: LUMA Festival Projects a New Vision of Public Art

I am standing among hundreds of people in the middle of what is normally a bustling downtown street in the heart of Binghamton, NY. Each of us is held transfixed by a 60-foot-tall animated illusion of projected light, enveloped in an immersive soundscape, watching an iconic Binghamton city building illuminate, decay, collapse, and be rebuilt in a fantasy explosion of multicolored flashes and moving chunks of architecture. The immensity of the 3D feature moving above, and the surreality of the moment, are the result of a spellbinding marriage of imagination and technical precision. The vibrant imagery, electrifying sound effects, and musical scoring inspire a sense of wonder.

This is the LUMA Projection Arts Festival, whose raison d’être, projection mapping, is the digital wizardry that allows animated minimovies and installations to be displayed stories-tall on the façade of city hall or inside a historic cathedral. Details of a structure’s exterior topography allow the animators to blend and warp the visuals around edges and architectural features without distortion. The result is astounding, inspiring—a technicolor fascination. Broadly themed around “light arts,” the festival allows the artists behind the individual works the freedom to explore and imbue their own narrative or emotional content.

Releasing recently premiered S&M2, a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Metallica’s S&M concerts and album recorded with the San Francisco Symphony. The concert film, which is screening in more than 3,000 theaters in over 80 countries, was recorded live with the San Francisco Symphony at the city’s new-state-of-the-art Chase Center. The production deployed Panasonic AW-UE150 4K pan/tilt/zoom cameras on stage for close-ups and specialty shots of the band and symphony musicians. Shure Launches RF Certification Program With the RF spectrum becoming increasingly crowded, RF coordinators are being asked to do more with less. To better prepare audio professionals in today’s evolving wireless marketplace, Shure is offering an RF certification program through the Shure Audio Institute (SAI). The program is intended for RF coordinators and audio professionals who design and operate wireless systems for touring acts, live performances, houses of worship, broadcast, and theatrical productions.

Professionals will learn how to navigate real-world situations using real equipment, according to Shure.

Courses and technical training will address issues including antenna placement, RF distribution, and wireless spectrum accessibility in increasingly crowded environments.

Shure’s RF Certification Program consists of two courses for completion: RF Coordination Workshop and Shure Master Class: Wireless Best Practices and Techniques.

The Shure Master Class is a one-day training course that will focus on the foundational theories and concepts needed for successful wireless system deployment.

Currently available as an in-person training, the course will soon be available online as well. Successful completion of the Shure Master Class is a prerequisite to register for the RF Coordination Workshop.

The RF Coordination Workshop is a two-day, hands-on training conducted by a team of Shure RF engineers and expert instructors. Sony’s Future Learning Collaborative Expands Reach Since November 2017, Sony Electronics has worked alongside faculty and administration from 11 colleges and universities in the United States to gain a better understanding of the role technology plays in teaching and learning. For the past two years, this group of public and private schools, known as the Future Learning Collaborative, has held regular meetings, summits, and trips to discuss the education landscape and ways to incorporate new technology and design insights that create a more meaningful, collaborative, and engaging learning environment.

Since the Future Learning Collaborative’s launch, higher ed members have tested forthcoming and new Sony technologies and helped to influence the design and development of these educational products and solutions.

In the past year, the focus of the community of practice was to deepen the co-creation between members and Sony, as well as to explore ways to create more active learning opportunities. To meet this goal, member schools have begun implementing “sandboxes,” designated learning environments equipped with Sony’s early-stage technology for the purpose of testing, experimenting, and validating potential new applications, use cases, and user experiences. The sandboxes serve as dedicated spaces for testing among faculty and students.

In addition, meetings were held during the group’s “Japan Vision Summit” in Tokyo in March 2019, which provided the opportunity for coalition members to meet with Sony executives and educational leaders from Japanese universities to explore trends, share ideas, and discuss best practices for technology implementation, in addition to offering time to interact with the latest products and solutions and understand Sony’s future goals and global direction. This provided member schools with an opportunity to discuss their vision for instructional design and plan a more strategic alliance with the Sony brand.

Last month’s Pro-AV Business Index was surprisingly strong against a backdrop of an uncertain macroeconomy. September was a little different. While pro AV sales did show continued growth, the industry situation reflected more of the broader economic mediocrity.

The AV Sales Index (AVI-S) clocked in at 59.5, down from 63.9 in August. In retrospect, the August number looks like a positive outlier, as June saw an AVI-S of 61.4 and July a reading of 60.3.

Current readings are down from last year, when the AVI-S was up over 65 in the summer and early fall.

“It’s always disappointing to see the AVI-S drop from month to month, but overall, readings around 60 must be interpreted as good news for pro AV,” said Peter Hansen, economic analyst, AVIXA. “In our Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis, we project pro AV to outpace economic growth, and these scores of 60 during such a lukewarm economic environment suggest pro AV is doing just that.”

As expected, many Pro-AV Business Index survey respondents spoke of concerns over trade issues. Other common subjects were the challenges of staffing and the highly competitive marketplace.

The widely followed U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers’ index from the Institute for Supply Management clocked its lowest reading since June 2009. The disappointing mark knocked a couple percent off stock market indexes worldwide and signals two impacts on pro AV. First, trade-generated manufacturing problems are driving

price increases and uncertainty, which make projects difficult to price, especially since end users don’t want to pay more for hardware.

Second, high prices and manufacturing problems create economy-wide difficulties that affect buyers of AV equipment.

The September jobs report in the U.S. looked very much like the August report, with 136,000 employees added against a prediction of 145,000. The unemployment rate dropped to 3.5 percent, which is the lowest since 1969. However, business leaders should not read too much into that statistic as its implication—a strong and exceptionally tight labor market—is contradicted by the fact that hourly wages remained flat from August to September. This leads to an annual wage increase of 2.9 percent, the lowest rate since July of 2018. Pro AV saw a disappointing month for jobs, with the AV Employment Index measuring 55.7. As with the AVI-S, August showed a strong reading (63.0) that now looks like an outlier, since the month’s number is in line with the July figure (57.3).

Many factors are driving M&A activity in the pro AV world. Globalization and wider market consolidation play a role, as multinational companies want pro AV integrators that can install coordinated solutions in all their offices worldwide.

Diversification, the best hedge against economic fluctuations, is another leading motivation, as businesses expand into other regions, markets, and solution areas through acquisitions.

Proof and Privacy at New York Digital Signage Week

Digital signage professionals gathered at Microsoft’s Technology Center in Times Square for the Digital Signage Federation’s annual Coffee & Controversy event during New York Digital Signage Week 2019 in mid-October.

After breakfast and coffee, the controversy began with a panel of experts discussing analytics and digital signage. The discussion was moderated by 16:9’s Dave Haynes, who said, “Every year we do this event and try to frame it around the idea of ‘What’s a controversial subject?’ I think this year we’ve got a really apropos one. Analytics have been here for a long, long time—probably 15 or 20 years—and through all that time, there’s been a fair amount of controversy around what’s all involved with it and what’s it doing.”

After Haynes’ introduction, the panel dove into the nitty-gritty of data privacy and ROI in digital signage.

“At some point in time we all got really obsessed with data, and sometimes we get obsessed with the data points just for the data,” said panelist Kym Frank, president of Geopath. “Now we’re reaping what we sowed. They’re going to change the laws in every state and we’re going to have to figure out how to make the things we built compliant [with privacy laws] in different states.”

Amy Avery, chief intelligence officer at Droga5, said that part of the problem is that the industry hasn’t educated people about how the technologies work. “We haven’t explained to people enough how data is collected and how it helps people,” she mused. She recommended speaking about the positive benefits of technologies like facial detection, which include connecting people with others like them, building communities, and building products.

“Technology has been its own worst enemy,” added Jeremy Bergstein, CEO, The Science Project. “If I could make one recommendation, it’s just keeping it simple. Be very clear with customers about what the device is there for and how it’s delivering better product, better pricing, better messaging.”

Dylan Gilbert, a policy fellow at PublicKnowledge, pointed to an article by the Pew Research Center that found that only 36 percent of the public trusted technology companies.

“There’s been a significant erosion of trust, regardless of the level of best practices, so strong efforts must be made to regain that trust,” he said. “Part of it is going to be [gained] by doing the right thing, and part of it is going to be [gained] by doing more education and outreach.”

AVoIP Everything NETGEAR’S JOHN MCHUGH DISCUSSES THE POWER OF BEING ON THE NETWORK SCN: What is your position, and what does it entail? What are your responsibilities?

JOHN MCHUGH: As the general manager of commercial networking for Netgear, I am responsible for overseeing every aspect of our Ethernet switching, wireless LAN, security, and storage product lines.

SCN: How long have you been in this position?

JM: I have been overseeing commercial networking at Netgear for the last six years. I have seen us roll out Insight, which we believe is the industry’s first app-managed and cloud-connected switches; Orbi Pro, a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mesh network for small-business owners, and 10 Gbps unmanaged switches.

SCN: How has your background prepared you for your role?

JM: My fascination with and love for networking goes back to my studies in college. My first job out of school was working on a team designing one of the first network interface cards for “fat” coaxial cable Ethernet … the first Ethernet. Since then I have worked in research and development, operations, marketing, and support at various companies in the networking industry. With Insight, you don’t pay anything extra for this capability, and users can either manage the product locally (as they always have), or activate the cloud feature and enjoy all of the benefits of active monitoring.

Long-term, we are expanding our horizons to new applications, especially in the pro AV market. With the emergence of SDVoE (Software-Defined Video over Ethernet), a whole new set of capabilities and applications opens up in the AV market. Netgear has always been a leader in 10 Gbps Ethernet with a wide range of platforms, from lowport-count unmanaged to highly-scalable managed solutions. We are so excited about this market space that we are reworking our roadmaps to offer even more options to our customers.

SCN: What is the greatest challenge you face?

JM: Pro AV applications are some of the most challenging in terms of performance and intelligence. Installations where we have to marry 4K video with audio protocols running through the same switching architecture showcases the amazing promise of AVoIP, but it is also the ultimate challenge. We work with many partners who are AV experts and we bring IP networking expertise, but it is really the combination of both knowledge bases that gets these solutions up and stabilized.

There isn’t a single sector in this market that is flat or contracting—large venue, small venue, pro gaming, medical, command and control, public safety, advertising, events, outdoor, etc. The list goes on and on, but the common thread is explosive growth with higher and higher resolution and audio quality.

Additionally, AVoIP is opening new capabilities and applications, especially applications that take advantage of dynamic control. With traditional video distribution, you could really only push information in one direction on each line, and those physical connections limited your sources and destinations. With IP networking, data is bidirectional to/from every connected device, and the routing of that data can instantaneously be reconfigured to provide fluid sources of content to unlimited numbers of displays.

SCN: Are there new initiatives we are likely to see from Netgear?

JM: In addition to the pro AV solution design center I mentioned, expect announcements from Netgear as we partner with other top pro AV suppliers to make the utilization of IP networking for AV more intuitive and integrated. Netgear moves very quickly and has released five new products in the last month alone targeted at pro AV applications—and customers should expect to see many more in the next year.

SCN: How can systems contractors better position themselves to profit from products and/or services you have to offer?

JM: AVoIP is a game-changer in terms of cost-effectiveness and flexibility. Netgear is using our pro AV solution design center resources to do training and support partners who are interested in understanding how this new technology can be applied to the solutions they are selling today. A PRIMER ON CONTINGENCY INSURANCE FOR LIVE EVENTS Today, everyone from Fortune 500 companies to small, local market producers is looking to live events to boost their market profiles and sales, as the customer experience has become the holy grail of the market economy. According to data compiled by market researcher Bizzabo, B2B events reached $512 billion in annual spend five years ago and have been moving upward ever since.

As these live events become increasingly important, they have also become infinitely more complex and expensive to produce, and they are exposed to a host of real-world exigencies including inclement weather, equipment failures, stage collapses, fires, performer no-shows and, yes, malicious acts.

Several types of insurance already cover things like property damage and loss of income. Talking ’Bout a Resolution WHERE PRO AV STANDS WITH 4K, 8K, AND 10K

P

rogress toward 4K becoming the predominant display resolution has been slow and steady. More than 15 years after the technology’s debut, almost every television upwards of 50 inches is capable of 4K display. At the same time, high-resolution content and accessories have evolved to firmly imprint 4K as a selling point to consumers— assisted in large part by streaming services shooting and delivering 4K video content in increasing volume over the past five years.

While still extraordinarily expensive, and by extension nearly unattainable by the masses, 8K is predicted to have a faster adoption rate than its predecessor once prices start coming down.

Research by Futuresource Consulting bears this out, with 8K TV shipments expected to grow from 200,000 in 2019 to nearly six million units in 2023 as brands push the technology to support higher average selling prices.

These numbers are further supported by data that shows, according Futuresource market analyst Chris Evans, that while Samsung and Sharp are currently the heavy hitters in the 8K TV technology arena, most other brands will likely launch 8K sets in the near future, with Chinese manufacturers leading the charge.

“8K broadcasting and content creation will remain niche to begin with,” Evans said.

“The higher resolution will be more dataintensive and will increase the cost of production throughout the workflow from the

point of capture on set.

Despite the higher cost of production, achieving return on investment for increases in resolution is uncertain as monetizing resolution increases can be difficult, as has been proven with the [ongoing] transition to 4K.” Chris Evans As manufacturers and tech providers continue to build the infrastructure to support the delivery of 4K content, they are laying the groundwork for what we can expect to see in future rollouts for 8K and eventually 10K systems.

Market Perception One of the major challenges for the layperson to overcome with increasing resolution is the often imperceptible difference between 4K, 8K, and 10K except on enormous screens. The consumer selling point for 4K has always been cleaner, sharper images—a critical consideration as screens grow larger by the year—but for professional AV, the push toward 8K has its benefits, especially in the evolution of technology accessories and the delivery of content in relation to expanding screen sizes.

“There are not a lot of tools available today that can handle 8K,” said Brandon White, director of new product development, Vanco

International. “However, as 4K becomes the new norm and 8K breaks through, the latest HDMI specification is becoming increasingly desirable to integrators in both the residential and commercial markets. From the perspective of HDMI, the release of the Compliance Test Specification (CTS) will help clarify and create a foundation for manufacturers to move forward with 8K-supportive products. This technology development will help to better establish 8K and 10K resolutions, and as a result will lead to an expansion in cable and fiber product offerings.”

As Evans pointed out, image sensors capable Brandon White of 8K acquisition have already been developed and are present in high-end digital cinema cameras and system cameras manufactured by Sony, RED Digital Cinema, Panasonic, Ikegami, and Sharp. “A majority of 8K productions so far have been based around Quad Link 12G-SDI,” Evans added. “The ecosystem of 12G-SDI products has grown notable, with a number of key manufacturers incorporating the connectivity into production equipment announced in 2019.”

Content Creation What does this all mean for 8K content delivery? Currently, there is just a miniscule amount of 8K video content available, even while camera technology exists to capture still 8K images. This is due to a list of notable hinderances as outlined by Evans, including insufficient bandwidth to deliver 8K video, the inability of some boxes to display 8K content, and a lack of a large enough 8K installation base to make it worth the investment now.

“For commercial installations, the resolution application is available on an as-needed basis,” he added. “However, there is a major emphasis

Integration Now On the content production side of the business, 8K and 10K are viable choices for content creators right now, as it is generally accepted that content captured in a resolution higher than it will be distributed in offers greater flexibility in post-production.

But consumers and integrators can also take advantage of these higher resolutions now.

“There are three factors that will drive customers to adopt 8K resolution: content, lower-cost signal distribution, and viewer expectations,” said Mike Garrido, senior product manager, Christie.

Integrators are helping by choosing which resolution is right for each application. As White outlined, 8K and 10K are being used for large screens and video wall installations that demand higher resolutions and faster frame refresh rates (stadiums, museums, etc.), while the current 4K standard works best for smaller spaces such as restaurants, bars, and hotel lobbies.

“Time and stability are required in order for customers to buy in to higher resolutions,” White added. “Typically, 8K/10K applications are used in highly visible large-screen installations, so to get buy in, the customer needs to know that not only is there 8K/10K content available, but that the content will be presented with a consistent and reliable signal.”

Beyond the integration and viewing benefits, higher resolutions are anticipated to offer integrators opportunities to become creative content producers themselves, especially when paired with other emerging AV technologies.

Now more than ever, pro AV is focusing on the end user experience—be it a consumer in a brick and mortar space or a co-worker in a conference room. SCN is once again celebrating the integration firms that have gone above and beyond to create the ultimate user experience.

Legacy Union Lobby, Charlotte, NC “Unify” is a generative artwork commissioned to mark the opening of Legacy Union. This atmospheric celebration of community plays out on a massive-scale NanoLumens video wall, integrated by Cenero, in the lobby of the property’s inaugural building. Its ever-changing swirl of colors reflects the vibrancy of a city where all the right elements are coalescing to form something new and beautiful. Driven by a complex algorithm, the behavior of each pixel influences the others around it—color, movement, and sound recombine in a complex and interconnected dance. The algorithm is a metaphor for community: Where we are is part of who we are—we affect, and are affected by, the actions of everyone around us. The content was created by experiential design studio Second Story.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ERDC, Vicksburg, MS The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) building is a cutting-edge facility recently completed in Vicksburg, MS. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by two 32-foot-high mosaic video walls composed of 30 LG VMC5 displays: 19 of the line’s 55-inch models and 11 of the 46-inch models. The atrium also boasts an immersive pavilion structure wrapped in 14 of LG’s 65-inch OLED displays. All signal routing and control in the space is handled by Crestron; video processing takes place in an RGB Spectrum Galileo display processor. Additional rooms in the facility include an auditorium featuring Barco projectors and a NewTek TriCaster system for live productions, multiple videoconferencing suites relying on Cisco SX80, and a bevy of other conference and classroom spaces that enable the USACE to communicate its messages effectively, every time.

Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island, New York, NY At the Statue of Liberty Museum, ESI Design used interactive media in new, unexpected ways to tell the important cultural story of liberty and bring the statue’s history to life. A sweeping 8K-resolution film is experienced on three Novawall projection screens ranging from 13 to 16 feet tall, taking visitors on a stunning fly-through inside the statue. Interactive exhibits explain the statue’s construction, history, and global impact using artifacts, theatrical soundscapes, projection mapping over large-scale graphics, and interactive media. Visitors contribute their ideas of “liberty” on one of 20 touchscreen kiosks, which join an ever-growing digital mural on a custom 40-foot-long Unilumin LED wall. The museum has best-in-class ADA accessibility, with Storm Interface Nav-Pads allowing visitors of all abilities to use the interactives.

Dickies Arena, Fort Worth, TX The city of Fort Worth has set a goal to be the most music-friendly city in Texas. One of the ways they are making that happen is with the 14,000-seat Dickies Arena, which is being built by Beck Construction with public and private funding. Wildly Sonic BALANCING ARCHITECTURAL AND ACOUSTIC BRANDING AT HUDSON YARDS

H

udson Yards is the largest mixed use private real estate venture in American history. Having officially opened for business earlier this year, the development along Manhattan’s West Side has produced fundamental changes to the iconic skyline and the very fabric of the city.

Hudson Yards’ first phase of construction, now completed, includes eight new buildings that provide millions of square feet of office and residential space augmented by high-end shopping, dining and other amenities. The development features a cultural facility (The Shed) and the 16-story Vessel, an art installation of connected staircases designed

by Thomas Heatherwick in an open-air public plaza. Hudson Yards’ first phase also includes a seven-story mall, the Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards, which includes 100 shops and 20 restaurants.

The high-profile Hudson Yards project attracted elite UK hospitality group Rhubarb to plant its first overseas outpost with Wild Ink, an Asian-inspired restaurant with an international approach that’s located in the Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards.

Design is naturally of the utmost importance within such a landmark.

The cornerstone of Wild Ink’s motif is a striking bamboo ceiling oriented in a grid-like fashion that imparts a subtly rustic meets contemporary Asian ambiance. While visually arresting, the interior concept was sonically problematic, challenging the restaurant group’s intent to provide an enveloping, high-fidelity sonic environment for diners. The inherent complexities were in part what led Rhubarb to the restaurant audio design expertise of Essential Communications, an audiovisual integrator based in East Hanover, NJ. Restaurant construction was already underway when Essential Communications was brought on board. The project was on an aggressive timeline, and acoustical considerations were not initially accommodated for. The environment needed to sound superior, yet the audio system had to be invisible—a challenge that was further complicated by duct work and air handlers that weren’t immediately apparent.

The space between the decorative bamboo grid and the actual ceiling was limited, so flexibility was key in selecting loudspeakers. Essential Communications eventually landed on pendant-style speakers, as they could be mounted from a single point. QSC’s AD-P6T pendant-mount loudspeakers were paired with 12-inch subwoofers, which required more solid mounting space, but due to their omnidirectional nature, placement wasn’t as critical. The pendants, which act like spotlights, are placed over large banquette seating areas, while the QSC AD-S112sw subwoofers could be spread around with less concern for the specificity of their coverage.

The Essential Communications team designed the entire audio system on the QSC Q-SYS Ecosystem for its integrated control and audio processing, along with the simple nature of the user interface and touchscreens.

Noting how important aesthetics are in high-end restaurants, Schwartz said QSC’s UI and touchscreens lend themselves to a clean, attractive look. The interface Essential Communications designed is basically a restaurant logo with controls placed in a mixing console style with sliders. The integrated nature of the Q-SYS platform means there are no coding issues trying to get the DSP to talk to control. “The convenience of programming and making it look good for the customer is what drives me to those products,” Schwartz said.

The client requested that several DJ input jacks be installed throughout the dining room, allowing them to bring in guest DJs or other sources.

Doing so would also provide more flexibility to sell out the restaurant for events. The integration team chose Attero Tech AES67 networked audio wall plates for the range of inputs they offer, along with the

ability to run digital signals over Cat-5 cable back to the QSC Core 110f processor. “The cool thing about the entire QSC world with the DSP and Attero Tech wall plates is that they all network together. It’s all being connected through the same switch,” Schwartz said.

Music playing in four individual restrooms emanates from SoundTube flush-mount ceiling speakers. Overall, the system comprises just four zones covering the bar, two dining room zones, and the bathrooms.

This decision was driven by the client based on experiences in their other restaurants.

Essential Communications was also tapped to provide the network and security systems for the restaurant and the back-end operations office at Wild Ink. Closed-circuit cameras were placed throughout the space. The Essential Communications team partnered with Adam Weintraub and Fusion Electronic Systems on the security system, and Schwartz praised their expertise as being integral to the design and implementation of the CCTV and access control. Weintraub also led the daily job site operations, including installation and site supervision.

Wi-Fi was an important feature for the client. In addition to a public guest network, a wireless POS enables servers to place orders tableside with a mobile device. Wild Ink’s main IT rack is located in an operations office on a separate floor from the restaurant, where the AV and security racks are housed. The distance was too far to run category cable, so the team laid 1,000 feet of fiber, which also ensured the speed required. The move is indicative of a larger trend, with fiber really coming into its own in light of internet speeds and copper limitations, Schwartz noted.

Beyond the design of this project, the construction challenges associated with Hudson Yards were persistent. Safety standards were stringent, with all the latest OSHA certifications, random drug and alcohol tests conducted, and background checks required for every individual on site. The team needed contingency plans in place and extra people trained and certified in the event someone was out sick. Even the deliveries were strictly scheduled, which added time and money daily.

Overall, an incredible amount of coordination was required to adhere to Hudson Yards’ standards. It was no easy feat, yet, Schwartz noted, “Our team responded flawlessly.” *

Preserving History While Designing for the Future L.A. MEMORIAL COLISEUM GETS HISTORIC TECHNOLOGY UPGRADE

M

uch of Los Angeles is larger than life, and people like it that way. The L.A. Memorial Coliseum, home to USC football and—temporarily—the Los Angeles Rams, is an excellent case

in point.

The outdoor sports stadium has long occupied a spot in the Los Angeles skyline, having been completed in 1923 as a memorial to Los Angeles veterans of WWI. It holds the distinction of being one of just a handful of National Historic Landmarks in Los Angeles and, in 2028, will become the only stadium in the world to have hosted the Olympics three times. It earned its national landmark status in 1984, the day before the opening ceremony of the second Olympics to take place on its field.

When the University of Southern California took over the master lease of the historic Coliseum in 2013, they began planning for an extensive renovation and remodeling project. While the structure has been renovated several times over its nearly 100 years, the most recent update at that point was about 20 years prior, in response to the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Beneath that memorable façade, the technology was badly in need of an update.

The $315 million renovation required architects, engineers, and integrators to create a brand-new, seven-story tower without altering one piece of the historic veneer, and to deliver a complete technology modernization that would include LED ribbon boards, a new sound system, stadium-wide Wi-Fi, two new large-screen video displays, and an updated scoreboard, as well as a modernization of the building’s lighting, plumbing and electrical systems.

The facility has played host to the Olympics, the World Series, and multiple Super Bowls; countless political dignitaries and pop culture icons have graced its field. But with the third Los Angeles-area Olympics slated for 2028, the stadium needed a complete rethink of premium space, including the addition of the 3,000-seat, seven-story Scholarship Club Tower at midfield—plus, an additional 235,000 square feet of space had to be incorporated into the existing bowl.

The challenge was straightforward, yet incredibly complex. Project owners wanted to preserve the look of historic outside elements, but integrate as much technology as possible within the space to elevate the user guest experience and streamline operations.

Rosendin, one of the country’s largest privately owned electrical contractors, took on the challenge of the massive AV system overhaul.

The initial bridging documents were drawn up by Arup, then handed off to Rosendin to design a complete system to integrate new and old spaces into a cohesive user experience.

The Challenge One reason Rosendin was selected for the project was because of its “strong background in all of the systems coming into play during this update,” according to the company. The collective experiences of the staff would come in handy when it came to change requests and

the tight deadlines involved. The Rosendin team was led by industry veterans Dustin Bransford, CTS-D, CTS-I; Chad Bowman, CTS; and Jason Meneses.

Rosendin hit the ground running. According to Bowman, the timeline was the biggest challenge. As the Coliseum currently plays host to two different football teams (USC Trojans and L.A. Rams), renovation work needed to be complete in time for the 2019 football season.

Construction took place over about 18 months.

Being involved early on would prove pivotal to Rosendin’s success.

“It’s interesting to us to be intimately involved in projects before they ever leave the ground,” said Bransford. “We go in with the general contractor, which gives us the ability to determine budgets and scope as an integral part of the design-build team from the outset. We get insight to electrical, architecture, heating/cooling systems, IT, and how all that will impact the AV. We are not an afterthought—we’re a crucial part of design decisions, and that’s appropriate because AV is certainly a crucial part of the end user experience.”

“The historic nature of the L.A. Coliseum is what really excited me, because it ties far back into the history of Los Angeles and it will be here for years to come,” Bowman added. “As far as the scheduled completion date, the owner added scope as the job went on, but the timeline didn’t change. Fortunately, we were able to accommodate their needs with a team of about 30 AV technicians, and upwards of 80 working on the low-voltage side.”

Control and Audio Distribution Around the time the project was being spec’ed out, Crestron had just announced the VC-4 platform; using a new Crestron product for centralized control was a unique approach for Rosendin. VC-4 control software runs on a standard Linux server. As an IT application, VC-4 offered benefits of redundancy and resiliency not available in proprietary standalone control processors.

In the L.A. Coliseum installation, Four Dell servers make up a VMWare cluster running Crestron VC-4. Every suite runs as an independent program, giving stadium guests the ability to control the displays and music selections from a 7-inch touchscreen.

In order to tackle the massive number of audio processing and distribution tasks, and to ensure seamless redundant failover for this mission-critical application, Rosedin selected the most powerful offering in the Q-SYS arsenal: Core 5200 Enterprise processors.

These processors are based on the Q-SYS RTOS running on robust Dell hardware. Bransford noted that the main rack is much more like an IT rack than a standard AV rack.

Like the Crestron technology, the QSC processors were appealing because of the project’s requirement for a high level of redundancy.

The system had to be resilient and scalable for a wide range of uses depending on the needs of the events hosted there.

“This type of venue is a great illustration of the power of the Q-SYS Ecosystem,” said Wagner. “With the Q-SYS Core 5200 Enterprise processors, audio, video, and control processing can now run alongside the rest of the infrastructure’s IT processing, offering tremendous flexibility to the IT team.”

An Audio and Video Behemoth This job began with a framework created by Arup that provided general locations for speakers and displays. The scope of work stated that contractors could specify any product as long as it was equal to or better than what was detailed in the specifications. As the project grew, USC ended up looking to value engineer the project to save money that could be used in other areas. The value engineering (VE) process ended up reducing the amount of equipment by centralizing most of the hardware, and removing some equipment rooms. In the end, the costs saved by the VE process allowed AV systems to be added to other areas, including the Scholarship Club Tower’s roof deck, and concourse and street-level amenities.

The scope specified new sound systems and displays all around the Coliseum’s interior. The exterior could not be altered because of the building’s landmark status, but the team was able to install loudspeakers at the gates and exterior concession stands. More than 850 loudspeakers were installed; most are QSC AcousticDesign Series ceiling- and pendant-mount loudspeakers, with a few Tannoy and JBL units in the mix. Rosendin says QSC features so prominently in the acoustic install because of the company’s excellent low-profile loudspeaker, and the end-to-end native QSC signal chain (DSP, amplifiers, and loudspeakers) is hard to beat.

walls in the lounge driven by a tvONE Corio Master, and more than 600 additional LCD displays on site. Every flat panel display is a Samsung model ranging from 55 to 84 inches.

The LCD displays and IPTV system were provided by Revel Media Group. All the video elements, as well as the digital signage applications like menu boards in the concession stands, are distributed over Revel’s proprietary platform. This system delivers live game feed, static content, or customized content (for corporate events, for example). The content is developed and managed in the Coliseum’s own production room.

Mitigating Project Delays As the scope grew, Rosendin had to navigate the addition of 22 private suites (for a total of 42). The luxurious founder’s suites, the more well-appointed of the two suite types, offer two displays and in-ceiling speakers controlled by a 7-inch touchscreen with HDMI input.

Each display can be used for presentations (for corporate events) both during and outside of game times.

As the August deadline to complete construction loomed, the crew remained on site 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

Bowman noted that challenges with the construction schedule often had a great impact on AV. For example, some special material was needed on the roof deck, which delayed the project by seven weeks. The team was able to get the material eventually, but the construction delay put AV behind schedule on the installation of speakers, racks, and other items in that area.

The Rosendin team had to get creative to offset these delays. To accelerate the on-site workflow, they emphasized pre-fabrication where possible, as well as opening, pre-kitting and labeling install packages off site. Once material was received in the warehouse, the team would unbox every device, record serial numbers, test, and then re-route items into room-specific kits. All FSR plates were built at the shop, making installation easy. Advance preparation allowed the team to QC and monitor shortages, saving time and money.

On Aug. 24, 2019, crowds filed into the new stadium and longtime fans certainly noticed the improved experience the technology upgrades provide, even if they couldn’t put their finger on exactly what seemed better. And the team at Rosendin was breathing sighs of relief that somehow, despite the challenges and setbacks, they had pulled off one for the ages. *

AI Meets Pro AV WILL 2020 BE A BANNER YEAR FOR AI-ENABLED TECH?

ata-driven AV is nothing new. For the past five years, AV endpoints have been migrating to the network with the promise of capturing room metrics and system analytics. The cloud, 5G’s lightningfast connectivity, IoT sensors, and artificial intelligence (AI) are converging to capture more valuable data in more locations. Some AV professionals believe this confluence will usher in a new era of design, one in which systems are built with learned user behaviors in mind.

AI in Focus AI is already making an impact in higher education.

Machine learning solutions are crunching vast dataset stacks to help stakeholders retain and support students.

Schools like Penn State University are blazing ahead with AI development, centering the emerging technology as an essential pedagogical tool. Penn State’s Nittany AI Alliance tasks students to innovate with AI and solve “real-world problems.”

The corporate campus is also feeling the AI push as decision-makers strive to improve data visualization and share resources more effectively. Governments and enterprises are leveraging facial detection and recognition to enhance guest experiences and user safety. AI can also output user patterns that were once invisible (or at least hard to track), revealing new opportunities for training. But how far into the future is pro AV’s “AI moment”?

“We look at the data collected around the equipment itself, failure rates, time to reset, usage data, and combine that with user data, and we expect that AI will be able to eliminate the Tier 1 Help Desk,” said Frank Pellkofer, co-founder and president of Utelogy, the California-based manufacturer of softwaredefined AV solutions. “Let’s assume the AI

If there is a meeting in 10 minutes, but the system knows that this device has a three-minute reboot process, the system automatically reboots without any human interaction. We believe that selfhealing is a key benefit surrounding AI. We’re doing some of that today, but we expect it to have a greater impact in the future.”

UCC, Active Directories, and Personalization Mario DiAntonio, director of sales for B2B technical account management and EBC programs at Samsung Electronics America, says the integration of voice and intelligent assistants offers countless opportunities in the professional AV space. One such opportunity is pairing this technology with a smart Active Directory.

“Companies already have a database of their employees’ contact and business information,” DiAntonio said. “With a smart AD, enterprises can begin storing biometric data as well, including voice. We could completely eliminate the need to log in to flexible meeting spaces. Instead, employees could walk into a conference room and their preferences would be automatically enabled by voice recognition.”

Pexip, a manufacturer of UCC solutions, is dedicated to making scheduling, joining, and conducting a meeting easier so users can focus on the meeting itself. Therefore, the team is dedicated to building an infrastructure “that can elastically scale up during peak periods, allowing calls to always connect without having to manage or pay for a massive infrastructure environment,” said Jordan Owens, vice president of architecture at Pexip. The company also wants to empower the user and save them time by allowing them to seamlessly join a meeting “from the right device at the right time.”

AI is an essential element of Pexip’s roadmap, leveraged “from the outset of the

company’s offering.”

Actionable Intelligence Pellkofer explained that much of Utelogy’s recent success has to do with the company’s U-Manage platform and its ability to deliver management and monitoring data. Utelogy’s clients are looking to use that data to provide artificial intelligence, as well as actionable intelligence, to drive future designs and installations. That data capture, through the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence, should inform better design and integration choices.

He shared an example: “From historical data, we know that the rooms on the eighth floor are never used on Fridays, so we’ll use this intelligence in the system to guide people to use rooms on other floors. We can power down that floor. The digital signage and wayfinding systems can guide people to the best meeting rooms on other floors.”

AI Will Make UX More Transparent For Owens, concepts such as AI and predictive analytics within the AV realm are “all about simplification versus polish and elegance.”

AI’s value for AV pivots around a few key questions: “How do we make the user’s experience more transparent and simple? How do we make the technology disappear into the background? How do we give the users the right choices without compromising flexibility?

This is only possible if we customize and present the right experience to the right user at the right time,” said Owens. “It’s also only meaningful if we can give users more options to connect without exposing the complexity to them or their administrators.”

The percentage of enterprises employing artificial intelligence grew 270 percent over the past four years, according to Gartner’s 2019 CIO Survey.

Samsung is demonstrating its AI commitment, investing heavily in its SmartThings smart home automation system by growing its ecosystem as well as its ability to serve customers. SmartThings products can connect with intelligent assistants like Bixby, Google Home, and Alexa—further connecting commercial and residential applications.

Attero Tech Axiom ML1

HoverCam Pilot X Teaching Station The What: Pilot X is a digital teaching station designed to drive student engagement through teacher mobility. It combines every essential classroom technology into one convenient wireless station, so teachers can spend less time setting up and more time teaching.

The What Else: Part of HoverCam’s Pilot series, Pilot X is a tabletbased, battery-operated, wireless digital teaching station designed for mobility. The 13-inch, 10-point-touch tablet can be charged while docked on the station or be removed so teachers can move around the classroom. At the end of day, users simply remove the tablet and store it in the podium’s tablet bay for overnight security and charging.

Pilot X’s wireless transceivers beam the teaching station’s screen and touch annotations to any interactive flat panel, projector, or TV in up to UHD resolution. The document camera also features a built-in microphone for capturing audio.

The Bottom Line: Pilot X features a Windows PC and 13-megapixel document camera, eliminating the outdated AV cart and putting the essential components educators need to enrich their students’ lives without being tethered to a desk or lectern. Teachers can work from the station or quickly disconnect the tablet to move around the classroom and take advantage of student collaboration opportunities as they arise.

ZeeVee Dante-Enabled ZyPer4K Decoder

The What: ZeeVee recently announced support for Dante, a leading technology for IP-based transport and distribution of uncompressed streaming audio. The first version of ZeeVee’s ZyPer4K AV decoder with an integrated Dante transmitter is available now.

The What Else: Equipped with Dante technology, the ZeeVee ZyPer4K decoder enables users to route any audio source within a ZyPer4K deployment to a Dante network. Dante audio over IP includes support for features such as human-readable names for all connected devices, automatic device discovery, one-click routing, and low deterministic latency. In addition, it provides stable performance and enables automatic reconnection of system components after power cycles.

Like all Dante devices, the Dante transmitter found in the ZyPer4K decoder is managed by the Dante Controller application. This virtual patch panel provides for the convenient connecting of devices, clocking, sampling control, and the ability to manually choose between unicast and multicast signal distribution.

The Bottom Line: Audio from any ZyPer4K encoder can be routed directly to a Zyper4K decoder and inserted onto the Dante network via the embedded Dante transmitter. In addition, the ZyPer4K system

The What: The latest product in the Axiom series of audio extension I/O modules, Axiom ML1 provides audio extension of analog mic and line level sources over Cat-5/6 UTP cabling in a single-gang, Decorastyle wallplate.

The What Else: Its combo XLR and 1/4-inch input connector accepts dynamic microphones, with 40 dB of adjustable gain, and offers a fixed attenuator pad for the 1/4-inch connector, with +4 dBu nominal input level. A 3.5mm jack with -10 dBV (consumer) nominal input level features 20 dB of adjustable gain and is summed to mono.

Front-panel gain knobs are provided for the combo mic input and the 3.5mm input. Audio signal level indicator LEDs for each input provide quick feedback for proper input gain adjustments. Selectable sum-tomono options for both inputs allow two ML1s or an ML1 and another Axiom device to be daisy-chained on a single bus.

Like other Axiom-series audio extension modules, the Axiom ML1 sends mono or stereo analog audio for up to 100 meters (total run length) over the Attero Tech Axiom bus, via Cat-5 or Cat-6 cable, to an Axiom AXP2O expander unit. The AXP2O, in turn, outputs balanced analog audio on three-pin depluggable connectors for connection to commercial audio equipment. The AXP2O also enables RS-232 control integration for Axiom products featuring control, with initial configuration supported through Attero Tech’s unIFY Control Panel software.

The Bottom Line: Simple to install and use, Axiom products add convenient, aesthetic audio connectivity and installation-friendly form factors well targeted for use with business music systems, DSPs, and amplifiers aimed at applications in cost-constrained retail, hospitality and education venues.

Analog Way LivePremier Series

The What: The EK-308U and EK309W portable meeting room projectors feature 3LCD design, 6,000 lumens brightness and a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. The EK-308U provides WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution and the EK-309W offers WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution.

The EK-308U and EK-309W are the highest brightness models in Eiki’s portable projector line.

The What Else: Both projectors offer Lens Shift capabilities, with manual adjustments of up to 45 percent vertical and 9 percent horizontal. Equally notable, these projectors offer Keystone Correction up to 15 degrees horizontal and 30 degrees vertical, Corner Correction, and in the case of the EK-309W, Curved Correction. Both projectors provide a 1.6x zoom lens with a short throw ratio of 1.07–1.75:1.

These projectors offer HDMI with MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link), enabling them to display HD video from smartphones and tablets, providing versatility for a wide range of content sources. Additional input capability is provided via a second HDMI port, two VGA connectors, a 15-pin D-Sub connector for S-Video, plus one USB Type A connector (for Memory Viewer) and a USB Type B port (for Display/Service). Both models also offer RJ-45 LAN control support for Crestron RoomView, AMX Device Discovery Technology, and PJ Link.

The Bottom Line: With a wide assortment of input connectors, up to 4,000 hours of lamp life, and an integrated 10-watt loudspeaker for audio, these new meeting room projectors facilitate flexible installation and are designed for easy maintenance.

The What: Analog Way has begun shipping the LivePremier series, a range of 4K/8K multiscreen live presentation systems for highend staging and premium system integration.

The What Else: The series—which includes four preconfigured products (Aquilon RS1, RS2, RS3, and RS4) and two fully customizable models (Aquilon C and C+)—offers versatile 4K digital connectivity, real-time 10-/12-bit 4:4:4 video processing power, and 4K60p on each input and output with low latency. Models in the series also features audio embedding/de-embedding, native Dante audio routing, and up to 120-megapixel throughput at a 10-bit 60 Hz. The modular design of the LivePremier series allows swapping of I/O cards to accommodate a variety of connectivity arrangements, including HDMI 2.0, DP 1.2, and 12G-SDI, as well as future potential connections such as single-cable 8K60 and IPTV transports.

In its largest chassis configuration, Aquilon can accommodate up to 24 4K60 inputs and 20 4K60 outputs, configurable as single screens, edge-blended widescreens, or scaled auxiliary outputs; two dedicated multiviewer outputs; and up to 24 4K freely assignable layers.

The Bottom Line: Specifically engineered for mission-critical applications and road-hardened to survive frequent shipping and the toughest live event environments, the LivePremier series combines a heavy-duty modular design, components chosen for their proven reliability, and redundant, hot-swappable power supplies to deliver 24/7 performance.

Christie Eclipse

QSC CX-Q Series Network Amplifiers

The What: Christie Eclipse is a 4K RGB pure laser projector featuring Christie RealLaser illumination that can process and reproduce HDR content on screen, in 4K resolution, at both high and low brightness levels. The result is a contrast ratio of up to 20,000,000:1, which ensures that the finest details are visible, even in extreme black and white ranges, according to the company.

The What Else: With an expansive color gamut approaching the full Rec. 2020 and Rec. 2100 color spaces, the Christie Eclipse produces highly saturated colors for immersive experiences and exceeds the Rec. 2100 200,000:1 contrast ratio specification by 100x. With RealLaser illumination, 4K resolution, and high frame rate capability of up to 120 fps, the Christie Eclipse can deliver smooth, dynamic content without distracting blur, which is critical for planetariums, giant screens, and themed attractions such as dark rides and flying theaters.

The Bottom Line: Christie Eclipse offers the flexibility to customize the brightness level to suit the environment, from 2000 lumens up to 30,000. It features Christie TruLife electronics for 4K at 120 Hz performance, and Christie Twist software for warping and blending capabilities.

An optional Christie Terra input card is available that offers AV integration and connectivity solutions for Christie projectors with TruLife Electronics and can connect directly to a Christie Terra SDVoE system.

The Christie Eclipse also supports Christie Mystique, an automated, camera-based warping and blending tool.

The What: QSC has begun global shipments of the CX-Q Series network power amplifiers in four-channel models. Eight-channel models of CX-Q Series amplifiers will be available later this year.

The What Else: CX-Q Series network amplifiers use a Class-D hybrid power train design built on the PL380 PowerLight amplifier platform. They feature two QSC amplifier innovations—FlexAmp and FAST (Flexible Summing Amplifier Technology)—that combine to offer more fluid power distribution options in a single amplifier. With the CX-Q Series, integrators can choose between “Q” models, with network inputs as well as routable mic/line audio inputs that provide additional onramps to the Q-SYS Ecosystem, or “Qn” models, which feature only network audio inputs, to reduce system cost when additional inputs are unnecessary. few weeks ago, I had the good fortune to attend a company open house where I was able to mix and mingle with some of our amazing manufacturing partners and members of my company’s upper management team.

The event was a few hours away, so I had several hours alone in the car to get lost in my own thoughts and reflect on the last month or so as I cruised down the expressway. Naturally, work came to mind. I started thinking about the most recent projects we brought in and how, even that day, two more projects had come in. I started doing the math in my head and it dawned on me that I had hit a large milestone for myself.

In the grand scheme of milestones, mine might not even register on some salespeople’s radars as an achievement. Without getting into specifics, I know a lot of very successful salespeople who might chuckle at my personal milestone, but I know for sure that at least four of you would be envious. Considering my entire journey so far in AV sales, this was a big deal. But then my thoughts drifted back to the workday ahead, and I found myself moving directly into the other boxes I needed to check off for the day and what clients I needed to talk to. I blew right past my big news after having a 30-second mini-celebration in my brain.

The celebration had confetti, a cake, and a bit of the bubbly.

After a few days, I started thinking about my milestone again. I wondered, “Why am I not making a bigger deal out of this?” I started to ponder another question, an even more important one: “Why don’t we take time to celebrate our wins or milestones?”

So, of course, I took to Twitter. While I received messages of support from awesome #AVTweeps, I’m concerned that I don’t acknowledge my wins myself. Once the month is done, we move to the next month, we move to the next quarter, and then to the next year. It’s like having a countdown clock above your desk, and slowing down to give yourself a pat on the back seems like a waste of time with the constant stream of emails, phone calls, and opportunities that fill your day-to-day. Overall, we seem to have forgotten to stop and smell those roses.

I have an overactive imagination and I began to picture getting wins that would result in raucous celebrations like you would see in Boiler Room or The Wolf of Wall Street. (Side note: I acknowledge that both movies are about being greedy and concern highly illegal activities that should in no way be emulated.) Even a less rousing celebration like having a group of coworkers running into my office to share a drink with me Mad Men style while I regale them with tales of how I closed that deal would suffice. But in real life, this doesn’t happen.

I wondered if it’s always been this way, so I went to someone who’s been in sales the majority of his adult life: my father. Throughout his career, I know he celebrated his wins. When we started discussing work culture, he said they worked as a team at his company, and the team celebrated the wins. The work week was for hard work, but the weekend was for those parties, sporting events, and going to clubs around town.

The social events were about building the team up, and as a result, they truly won and lost together. The more we talked, the more I realized that my silver screen celebration fantasies were not that different from what it was like to be in sales in the 1970s and ’80s. Hollywood may have turned it up to 11, but these real-life parties were still around a four.

After reminiscing with my father, I started to bring it back around to modern times. How do we celebrate these wins and milestones now?

When I began my pro AV sales career, I distinctly remember closing my first install—it wasn’t a massive job, but it was my first. It was exciting and thrilling and I was so enthused that I went out and bought a nice bottle of whiskey and brought it back to the office. At the end of the day, I poured a glass for everyone as a thank you for being patient and helping me along the way. That was nearly four years ago now.

Since then, the pace has picked up. It’s easy to celebrate when you only have a few plates spinning, but once you start going full tilt boogie, you lose sight of the milestones. And I know I’m not the only one. We all do it. We get so focused on what we need to do or what our co-workers are working on that we don’t celebrate individually or as a team.

My particular successes have been in sales, but celebrations apply to all positions across the company. Everyone has career milestones, but are you making a big deal out of yours? Do you celebrate your achievements?

Is there a goal in your life that you are striving to accomplish? When you cross that finish line, what are you going to do about it? Obviously, you know the answer ... you’re going to Disneyland!

Oh—you didn’t win the Super Bowl; you just passed your CTS-I. Well go to Starbucks and splurge on a venti latte. Find your own way to celebrate, even if it’s small. And maybe it’s not your milestone, maybe it’s a co-worker’s.

The next time a colleague hits that milestone or achieves a goal, make a big deal about it. We might not be good at celebrating ourselves, but we should celebrate our workfellows. Buy your programmer a box of their favorite candy. Take your fellow sales reps out for drinks after work. Take your project manager out to that really sketchy Mexican taco stand that they love, but don’t buy them the goat taco because you want them to be able to function later in the day. (Yes, this is an actual thing near our office.)

At the end of the day, I think we all need to get good at one thing. Take time to reflect on what you have done today. Stop what you’re doing after you read this and think about your day, your week, and your month. Look at what you have accomplished. Good job! Keep up the good work!

Don’t eat that goat taco, but enjoy a little bit of the bubbly.
