ISE 2020: The heart of innovation

The RAI’s Elicium building is the canvas for a week-long projection event organised by ISE and the RAI, in conjunction with a number of technology partners

Visitors to ISE 2020 will have the opportunity to interact with a wealth of creative new solutions and integrated experiences designed to complement today’s fast-changing, technology-oriented lifestyles.

End users, integrators, distributors, manufacturers, consultants, design firms and live event producers will all find much to pique their interest as ISE holds its final show at the Amsterdam RAI before relocating to the Fira de Barcelona from 2021.

Visitors will have the chance to see first-hand the profound and enabling effect that AV technologies are having in a variety of verticals: how collaboration technology is galvanising the world of work; how digital signage solutions are broadening the reach and engagement in retail and advertising; and how innovative immersive AV solutions are revolutionising the user experience in the visitor attractions space.

The need for all industry stakeholders to make innovation the driving force of their organisations was examined in the Opening Address by Duncan Wardle yesterday. Drawing on

his quarter-of-a-century experience of working at Disney, where he became head of innovation and creativity, Wardle explored how innovation can become part of the day-to-day working culture in AV businesses.

That innovation is in bountiful supply at ISE 2020 this week, where more than 1,250 exhibitors across 15 halls are showcasing the game-changing solutions and integration expertise that have made this show the world’s most successful exhibition for professional AV and systems integration.

ISE managing director Mike Blackman explained: “From the very first event in 2004, ISE has been all about empowering end users and every part of the AV channel with the tools and technologies needed to deliver the AV experiences of today – and tomorrow. Although the scale and reach of the show have grown dramatically over the years, we have always emphasised innovation as the focus of our exhibition and conference activities. We invite everyone to ‘unleash the creativity’ one more time at the Amsterdam RAI before we move to Barcelona next year.”

ISE strikes strategic content partnership with TNW Integrated Systems Europe has today announced a multi-year strategic relationship with global media brand TNW (The Next Web), aimed at bringing the best of technology and innovation to ISE 2021, taking place at the Fira de Barcelona, on 2-5 February.

The partnership will see TNW programme three new content tracks focused on technology and its impact on society which will run in parallel to the Professional Development Programme produced by ISE, AVIXA, CEDIA, media partners and associations.

Pieter Paul van Oerle, strategy director at TNW, said: “We’re excited to be joining forces with the world’s largest exhibition for AV and systems integration in shaping their next generation of conferences in their new hometown. Injecting the special TNW tech festival vibe into this world-leading event is a huge win for both of our organisations and audiences.”

‘You’re going to have a fantastic show’ ISE managing director Mike Blackman has assured exhibitors and attendees that they can expect a show for the ages, despite the stormy weather and concerns over the Coronavirus Global travel was affected significantly on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 February by hazardous weather conditions, which grounded flights across Europe, while some companies pulled out of exhibiting or were unable to attend on account of the Coronavirus. However, ISE managing director Mike Blackman was keen to emphasise that, with all necessary precautions having been taken, ISE will bow out of Amsterdam RAI in style.

“Everyone who is coming can still expect a phenomenal show,” Blackman said. “We still have over 1,250 exhibitors and almost all the major brands are here. Obviously, it’s been made public that we’ve lost a couple of key exhibitors. We’ve lost about 50 Chinese companies who unfortunately are unable to travel or have been prevented from travelling. And we’ve had about another 18 companies who have had travel difficulties or have decided, for the health and safety of their employees, to make the decision [not to attend]. We respect those decisions. But you’re going to have a fantastic show here. Everyone is really excited and getting ready to make this last event in Amsterdam the best ever.”

With the show making its final outing at the RAI, Blackman also reflected on the sense of togetherness it has fostered over the years and how some of the issues facing this year’s event have helped bolster the sense of community felt across the sector.

“We’ve been through all sorts of weather conditions,” he recalled. “I remember when it froze, I remember when we had snow, and it was so unbelievable how the industry acted together to get here.

People were sending messages to each other to say that their flights were cancelled, so would anyone like to join them in their car? It makes you think about how close this industry is. We’re seeing that again this year. People are contacting each other to say: ‘We are travelling this way, who wants to join us?’ And it gives everyone a story to tell.”

Mike Blackman gears up for ISE’s final Amsterdam show

Wardle: Find your inner child, improve your bottom line Creativity, imagination, curiosity and intuition are the key skillsets we will need in the workplace in the next decade, according to Innovation speaker Duncan Wardle, who gave the ISE 2020 Opening Address.

“Those skillsets that we’ve hidden since childhood will become the most important over the next decide, simply because they can’t be programmed. The right-hand side of the brain will become the most dominant,” he said.

According to Wardle, we are all born with these attributes, but school tends to knock it out of us. “Nothing is impossible for a child, but then the more expertise we get, the more reductive we get to be and when people are considering a new idea we say ‘no because… we tried that last year’, or ‘no because it’s not a strategic brand fit’.

To prove his point that we are all still creative, Wardle asked ISE delegates how many of them thought they were creative, and when only 5% raised their hands, he gave several audience Duncan Wardle told the audience how easy it can be for members made-up job titles and challenged them to talk about companies to transform their cultures their work for five minutes.

And so it was in the Forum that a lead designer for parachutes for elephants and the world’s leading sex therapist for honey bees both spoke eloquently about their work. “You see – you don’t think you’re creative, but you’ve just been talking about a subject that you know nothing about,” said Wardle. His exercise with ISE delegates is just one tool he uses in his work as a consultant to illustrate how easy it can be for companies to transform their cultures from reductionist to expansionist.

He also argued that customer data can only go far and so deep. “You need to apply a child-like curiosity to find out what really excites your customers,” he said, adding that you only get your true answer on the fifth ‘Why?’ “If you run analytics on why you go to Disney Parks, the number one answer you are going to get is for the rides.

That tells me to spend a couple of hundred million on a capital investment strategy – but pause for a moment and act child-like and ask the question ‘why’, and that’s when the innovation starts to happen.

Asked whether the same thinking can be used by contractors without direct customer relationships, Wardle believes it’s no different: “I always hear ‘we’re B2B’ but they are still your consumer, B2B or B2C – they are still buying your products,” he said.

He doesn’t think that technology is responsible for killing off creativity, however, quite the opposite. He’s doing some work with the NBA – the association believes that virtual basketball revenue will exceed physical revenue within the next 15 years. “Virtual basketball will be an Olympic game by 2036, so much so that they’ve piloted two virtual teams – the New York Knicks against the Orlando Magic. When these virtual teams met they got 40,000 in Madison Square Gardens and an additional 40k online.”

But he admits that anyone offering physical services or products does face a challenge – and they need to focus on the experiential.

Ubles: “People want to work for companies that have great buildings”

The four pillars of better, smarter buildings The Smart Building Conference kicked off at the Hotel Okura yesterday with an insight into the impact better buildings can have on their occupants and the environment During his keynote address, Erik Ubles, CTO at smart building pacesetter EDGE, gave extensive insight into the four key elements – wellbeing, design, sustainability and technology – that must be considered if better buildings are to become the norm.

While aspects such as heat, lighting and air quality all play a part in producing happier and more productive occupants, EDGE takes this further, designing spaces that connect people to the building as well as encouraging positive activities.

As an example, he cites buildings that are designed with large central atriums and beautifully crafted staircases, that encourage visitors to walk rather than take the elevator or allow people to connect more with the spaces they work in.

Ubles argues that currently 85% of workers currently aren’t engaged in the workplace and this needs to change.

“People want to work for companies that have great buildings, so we need to make them amazing places to go to,” he said.

While data is helping make this happen, Ubles said that the current mass of sensors from different manufacturers which analyse various aspects of a building make it challenging, and he called for more integrated platforms to bring all the data together.

The theme of efficient design and sustainability continued into the afternoon sessions, with Brad Koerner, VP of product development

and innovation at CIMA, making the case for switching to DC powered commercial and residential buildings.

Every digital device from a smartphone to IT networking to LED lighting, he pointed out, runs on direct-current electricity, yet our infrastructure runs off ancient utility grids and a building’s wiring remains stuck using AC. With the cost of on-site solar PV generation dropping to the point of grid parity, he said that it would be cheaper for building owners to generate their own DC power rather than to buy AC power from a utilities company.

With research estimating that commercial buildings can save 15% of their total power by skipping all the wasteful DC-AC-DC conversions, Koerner predicted that DC-powered ‘nanogrids’ will replace AC infrastructure in many commercial buildings.

There are already early nanogrid adopters, including Dutch bank ABN AMBRO’s DC CIRL office Pavillion and the Pulse academic building at the University of Delft.

News AudioForum explores smart solutions for demanding listeners The role of virtualisation in delivering more immersive audio experiences, and the impact of the individual’s sound perception on their engagement with different content and real-world scenarios, were among the themes addressed in the AudioForum at ISE 2020, which took place at the RAI yesterday.

Organised by Connessioni and coordinated by Bert Kraaijpoel – secretary of the Dutch section of AES, lecturer in psychoacoustics at the Koninklijk Conservatorium and sound lecturer for the Netherlands Film Academy – the event explored multiple practical and theoretical issues on the path (as the sub-title described it) ‘from sonic environments to a true sound democracy’.

In a session entitled ‘Smart IP for installed sound’, Genelec R&D director Aki Mäkivirta considered the burgeoning role of virtualised speaker technologies in achieving “a complete and more complex acoustic environment” for a host of installation environments. It’s important to “achieve good audio for all

democratically, but in a way that avoids over-complexity and the need for too many speakers,” he said.

To this end, Genelec has recently developed a Smart IP technology platform that allows power, audio, scalable loudspeaker system configuration, and supervision and calibration features to be delivered via a single standard Cat cable. Geared towards small-to-medium-sized applications, the platform can be used with products including the 4420A and 4430A loudspeakers.

Concetta Cucchiarelli, founder of Happear, also addressed the need to optimise the sound experience for all in a session entitled ‘Designing new experiences for demanding listeners’.

Acknowledging that no one individual will “want to listen to everything, or will be able to listen to [all content] in a way that is perfectly reproduced”, Cucchiarelli emphasised the importance of prioritisation in audio reception and indicated that good sound design should be a judicious blend of honesty, innovation and unobtrusiveness.

New spin on real-time tracking COMPANY MODULO PI Stand: 14-K135 New and enhanced versions of the Modulo Player and Modulo Kinetic media servers are on display on the Modulo Pi stand this year.

The new version of Modulo Kinetic now includes full integration with L-ISA technology by L-Acoustics. The spatial audio system is now included in Modulo Kinetic’s extensive library of preloaded devices, allowing bidirectional interactions between Modulo Kinetic and L-ISA. Marketing and communications manager Amandine Teyssier told the ISE Daily that stand staff are offering a special demonstration featuring a Mini onto which projections are beamed. Designed for ISE, the demo highlights the software’s realtime tracking capabilities.

Newly extended show control capabilities of Modulo Player are also being highlighted. On top of the existing library of video projectors and external matrices that can be controlled through the player, more than 40 new devices can now interact with Modulo Pi’s media server. The new devices include NDI PTZ camera control, as well as a series of USB plug-ins such as controllers, sensors, motors and RFID tags.

Adding clarity to the cybersecurity conversation The CEDIA Cybersecurity Workshop made its debut yesterday at Hotel Okura, Amsterdam.

The full-day event was an opportunity to raise awareness among both residential and commercial integrators of the challenges and opportunities around cybersecurity.

As Jeff Sonnleitner, lead instructor for the course and a professional network and security instructor with over 35 years’ experience, explained: “Integrators currently often aren’t aware of what they should be doing in terms of cybersecurity. It’s getting better and awareness is growing, but the problem is that they don’t have any training.

Manufacturers don’t provide training, so they need to get this from a third party and that means a time investment.

Then they face the challenge of how they feed this down to the installers, the technicians… It’s a whole new element for Jeff Sonnleitner them and it means their business model has to change.” shares his cybersecurity The confusion doesn’t stop with the integrator, however, expertise with end users often unsure what they should ask for with regards to security and, more often than not, assuming it is provided in the devices they use.

When it comes to advice for integrators creating cybersecurity policies, Sonnleitner was clear: “Research, research, research. They have to do their research, then take that information and adapt it to their client base, because everyone’s is different. Adaptability should be uppermost in their mind.”

The good news is that the potential business advantage for integrators is clear. “It’s a big opportunity. If integrators know that updates are coming for the higher-end IoT devices they’re installing, it could create a whole new opportunity for them to manage those updates. It’s a big revenue generator with almost a zero cost.”

Unfolding LED AUDIPACK Stand:1-F30 There can be little doubt that, such are the opportunities they deliver, LED walls are proliferating. At ISE, Audipack is demonstrating its ‘Jack in a Box’ approach to making them even more widespread.

The company has developed a product that sees an LED wall being folded into a flight case. To deploy it, the user simply lifts the case lid and elevates the wall to the required height. Audipack points out that not only is this single box solution more convenient than a multi-box solution, but also enables non-rental LED panels to be used for rental applications.

The mechanics of the system are designed in such a way that absolutely no gaps are visible between the LED blocks, according to Audipack; the alignment of the units is fully adjustable to get the best image possible. A built-in lift system gently raises the complete screen to user height and keeps the panels firmly in place.

Using the same underlying principles, the company claims almost any configuration could be developed according to customer requirements.

Control, monitoring and analytics software provider Utelogy is launching v3.0 of its flagship product in Hall 14.

To meet the needs of an increasing number of customers with high security and mission-critical environments, Utelogy 3.0 supports a growing number of enterprise features such as High Availability (HA) and an on-site version of U-Manage.

Utelogy’s HA implementation employs high-performance clustering which has one or more U-Servers working together to provide failover. While the exact deployment depends on each customer’s environment and its IT policies, a typical deployment will have a U-Server hosted on its own hardware or within a VM environment that isolates other U-Servers from a hardware or network failure.

With the on-site system, companies will have access to U-Manage which includes the HTML interface and database as well as U-Enterprise, which features the U-Server, U-Control and U-Console.

The vx 4 has been designed to suit the needs of the esports, live production, Designed to suit fixed installation and theatre markets the needs of four key markets: esports, live productions, fixed installations and theatre, disguise says its vx 4 system has been engineered to play back video at the highest quality and resolution possible.

The company’s gx 2c, which combines elevated output and processing power, allows creatives to build environments with increased particles, effects and richer scenes at higher resolutions and smoother frame rates.

Additionally, disguise is showcasing a software toolkit, which enables users to visualise, design and sequence projects. Demonstrations include disguise’s latest r17 software launch which sees improvements and fixes that provide the user with more creative freedom and faster and streamlined workflow processes.

A number of enhancements have been made by D-Tools to its system integrator software, and the company is demonstrating these on its stand.

D-Tools System Integrator (SI) is software designed to help integration companies improve operational efficiency for increased profitability while reducing time, cost and errors for a streamlined business process.

System Integrator v13 includes a number of new features Features in the latest version, SI v13, include the ability to define, create, sell and manage service contracts. Also now included is access to dealerspecific pricing from selected partner brands, and the ability to substitute allowances for parts with no impact on price.

Multi-conductor cable documentation enables connections to be drawn down to the individual connector, and support for bundled cables provides accurate labour calculation. Bar code scanning meanwhile collects and validates product data and synchronises with projects upon item receipt.

STARSCAPE Stand: 5-R83 Making its first appearance at ISE is Starscape Star Ceilings. The company is showcasing its Infinity home cinema star ceiling panels, each of which measures 1,000x1,000x10mm and includes 100 optical fibre ‘stars’ already fitted. With four different fibre diameters, the company says there is a real sense of depth to the ‘sky’ above – hence the name Infinity.

While the Infinity panels can simply be screwed to battens fixed to the ceiling, there is also an optional magnetic mounting system in which powerful magnets on the back of the panel stick to steel mounting tracks. This allows for easy lateral adjustment of the panel during installation and also means that the panels are demountable – particularly useful when there are speaker cables above them.

The panels are illuminated by compact LED light sources. Each light source can illuminate up to 12 panels, and the effects offered range from subtle white twinkle to full colour and even strobing effects with DMX control, so as to fully integrate with home automation systems.

Because the system is modular it is infinitely scalable – from a single panel to hundreds.

In home cinema rooms, installations typically range from six to 30 panels.

News Maximum integration AVONIC Stand: 15-Q260

Avonic aims for maximum interoperability to provide all-in-one offers

On show from PTZ camera manufacturer Avonic is a preview model of the new CM22 fixed camera for small meeting and huddle rooms. It captures images at 4K/UHD resolution and also integrates HDMI and USB 3.0 ports and microphones.

Also being showcased in Hall 15 is the CM70 PTZ series, which includes a feature set more usually found in broadcast-grade equipment, including HD-SDI, a useradjustable colour matrix and secure reliable transport (SRT) streaming.

In addition, visitors are able to preview the forthcoming

CM90, which is capable of live streaming at 60fps. This fixed install camera is designed for pro-AV applications and features 31x optical zoom. Visitors to the stand can also see a demonstration of live IP streaming with an all-in-one conference service.

These demonstrations will highlight how Avonic’s product line focuses on integration and interoperability and can benefit users in education and conferencing.

News AV network platform makes its debut CLEARONE Stand: 11-D130 Convergence AV Network Manager is a new unified AV network management platform to monitor, control and audit ClearOne’s pro-audio and video products and services.

A remote, real-time system access provides network administrators with all-inclusive dashboard views.

The platform has two levels of access – a secure administrator level for full access and a viewer level for monitoring by multiple users.

The user interface runs on any browser from desktop to mobile and supports both Windows and Linux OS platforms for IT integration. Fold resembles a robotic arm, on which an 8mm, waferthin touchscreen monitor is mounted. When extended, the 17.3in display remains as a tablet above the desk surface and can even be used just like a tablet – in a comfortable operating position and at any angle for the best view.

According to the company, the idea was to combine the best of all worlds – a small installation footprint and comfortable flat usability.

With many different types and screen sizes, the company says it has a complete range of vertical retractable monitors, suitable for almost every project and budget. Thin monitors made out of aluminium and glass are designed for many customisations and combinations. Customers can choose the FHD version first and upgrade via a licence to 4K when they are ready, so their investment is protected.

The camera is designed for use in medium to large remote studios, TV newsrooms, houses of worship, conference rooms, sports stadiums, live sports events, large auditoriums, and educational and government environments.

News Placing two DuoBoard displays together allows them to be used as a single continuous workspace

Interactive flatpanel supports multiple operating systems BENQ Stand: 1-N10 Appearing at ISE for the first time is the DuoBoard platform-agnostic interactive flatpanel from BenQ. Designed for meeting room environments, the display is available in two sizes: a 65in model (CP6501K) and an 86in (CP8601K) model with 4K resolution.

Placing two DuoBoard displays together allows them to be used as a single continuous workspace with built-in sensors connecting the screens. BenQ’s Duo OS enables Android, iOS, macOS or Windows to run simultaneously on the screen. A single DuoBoard can be partitioned to run two applications side by side, enabling multitasking and facilitating the flow of information between different apps. Multitouch capability allows multiple users to collaborate on the same screen.

The DuoBoard also has an integrated camera together with a noise-reducing and echo-cancelling microphone array for video conferencing.

At the heart of the DuoBoard is Collaboration+, a suite of features designed to maximise efficiency, productivity, and teamwork; users can start meetings with one touch through the BenQ Launcher.

Nook is showcasing its ‘Nook as a Platform’ (NaaP) concept – which involves the use of cosy, prefabricated acoustic boxes for small huddle-style group meetings – at this year’s ISE. Originally developed for the use of introverts and people on the autistic spectrum, Nooks are now deployed more widely in the workplace as well as in science parks, schools, healthcare centres and other facilities where people can enjoy the benefits of escaping from the noise to “better connect, recharge and focus”.

The pods’ ability to incorporate Nook is showcasing its NaaP concept between Halls 7 and 8 wiring and additional components have made them popular choices in the professional AV space. A number of long-term ISE exhibitors are already using Nooks for small-group meetings, including Harman Professional, which has created the Acendo Nook Huddle Pod as an integrated video conferencing solution for rapid and flexible deployment into existing workspaces.

A new partnership means that Nooks are set to be even more in evidence at next year’s show, as CEO David O’Coimin explained: “We are delighted to be partnering with ISE to offer Nook as branded event meeting pods to exhibitors at ISE Barcelona 2021. Each zero-border ZyBrid screen is supported by its own ZYX500 multitouch controller, which outputs to a A 2x2 interactive videowall with seamless multitouch transition and single master controller. ultra-narrow borders between screen tiles is being showcased Zytronic has created new firmware for the master ZXY500, which combines the data from the individual controllers, stitching them together and presenting a set of x-y co-ordinates to the host computer as a HID plug-and-play touchscreen device. Instead of individual touchscreens, the computer sees one giant touch sensor.

The individual screens can be tiled, and multiple touch controllers linked to create huge, near-borderless interactive walls, with each thermally toughened glass touch sensor providing durable, vandal-resistant protection for the fragile displays beneath.

Improve teaching and learning outcomes with AV Tell a story with XR tech Returning today for its third edition, the XR Summit ISE features another stimulating half-day programme focused on the virtual (VR), augmented (AR) and mixed reality (MR) industry.

The conference, supported by Audio Partner Bose, will explore technologies, strategies and solutions, offering valuable market intelligence as well as best practice case studies, while featuring some of the world’s leading XR experts in panel discussions and presentations.

Key topics up for discussion include how innovations in immersive audio are providing new ways to tell stories; and the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating XR technologies into environments, whether location-based entertainment or workplaces. The AVIXA Higher Education AV Conference, supported by EUNIS and SCHOMS, will highlight a range of different perspectives on how to best enhance the learning and teaching experience through effective use of AV technologies.

Delegates will hear examples of good practice cases and take away tips from freely available tools and guidance that may help them in their own scenarios.

They will also look at emerging and innovative practices and consider their possible application in their own context.

Sessions include Dom Pates from City, University of London, sharing his experience of launching what is claimed to be the ‘world’s first holographic event at a university’, using an emerging technology that projects life-sized 3D holographic entities onto stages from remote locations.

In this workshop a speculative design approach will be used to imagine a possible future where it is necessary to plan for the use of such tools.

Participants will be encouraged to think ahead and develop a set of approaches for supporting those preparing to enter into this brave new world. In doing so, they will gain insights into the potentials and challenges of this tool as an emerging educational technology for bringing new dimensions to blended and distance learning.

‘Learning and Teaching in a Distributed Environment’ will feature speakers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology who have considerable experience of both designing and repurposing courses in these types of environment. The session will look at examples and lessons learned using both standard and ‘high-end’ AV technologies.

Control Rooms Summit puts missioncritical AV in focus Today sees the launch of the Control Rooms Summit (CRS), which will lead with the theme ‘How better integrated AV will save and protect lives and deliver more efficient operations in the world of mission-critical command and control’.

VR in the spotlight Attendees can explore the latest in virtual collaboration and experience an interactive VR ride in an exciting new addition to the ISE showfloor.

Located in Hall 14, close to the Main Stage, VR at ISE showcases how virtual reality can be used in immersive, collaborative spaces. Two Digital Projection Multiview VR systems are being demonstrated; Multiview allows up to three people wearing fast-switching glasses to view and interact with a stereoscopic 3D virtual model. Crucially, each person sees the object from their own viewpoint – unlike conventional multi-user VR systems where everyone sees exactly the same perspective. This provides a significant degree of realism, as all users see the model behaving just as a real object would do as they walk around it. It also means that they are not cut off from each other, as they would be if they wore head-mounted devices.

Additionally, VR at ISE includes an immersive VR theme park ride called Aqua. Designed and run by Lightspeed Design, this DepthQ VR attraction takes attendees on an interactive fantasy ride through aquatic environments where they encounter touchable jellyfish, a dolphin and even the mythological world of the god Poseidon. The VR mapped content is projected onto a curved Vioso Panadome screen by Digital Projection hardware, so the rider does not need to wear a headset. Additional spectators, also on motion seats, can watch with head-mounted devices.

Critical control gets up to speed with AV The inaugural Control Rooms Summit ISE takes place today, addressing the latest trends in technology, design, ergonomics and best practice in this mission-critical sector.

Ann-Marie Corvin finds out more from ICCRA chairman Peter Prater Critical control rooms are generally behind the curve in terms of AV adoption, according to Peter Prater, a founding member and chairman of the International Critical Control Rooms Alliance (ICCRA).

AV kit in emergency service control rooms, hospitals and utility companies usually tends to be Hotel Okura, Grand Ballroom limited to a couple of “very large screens” at the front 09:00-15:00 of each room, usually listing incidents and calls, he adds. “They might have Sky or local TV stations broadcasting – and there might be a CCTV camera display – but that’s about it.”

New to ISE, the Control Rooms Summit will introduce the sector to the potential of AV, and give ISE AV channel delegates the opportunity to explore the diverse world of the control room, which spans the gamut from the emergency services, transport and utilities to industries as diverse as telecommunications, airports, water treatment and data centres.

Prater – who is chairing the summit and attending ISE for the first time – also hopes to extend his personal knowledge of AV. “There are an enormous number of techniques, interfaces and experiences being deployed by AV suppliers and systems integrators; I think that critical control room people will start to look at these and work out how they can harness these technologies in their own environments,” he says.

Consolidation Prater has enjoyed a 35-year career in the critical control rooms sector: starting in the British Army and then later as a consultant and now as a supplier in his role as managing director of Hexagon Safety and Infrastructure.

He observes that the control room landscape has altered dramatically over the past decade as organisations that once operated multiple sites with a small control room in each location are seeing how they can operate with fewer and larger control rooms.

This has partly been driven by cost savings but also as a result of improvements in radio control systems, as they move from analogue to digital systems. “In policing, for example, most forces used to have between three and eight control rooms but now several will share one,” he says.

The UK government is currently in the process of rolling out a new 4G-based Emergency Service Network, which will replace the current Airwave service, and deliver what

Air traffic control Another trend is the growing use of off-site control rooms with air traffic control towers operating remotely; these are beginning to be trialled in territories such as Germany and Sweden.

Remote and virtual towers are based on video sensor surveillance instead of out-of-the-window views, and it is based on optical sensors that provide high-quality real-time images of the runway, the airport ramp and the very nearby airspace. Images are typically displayed on large monitors that can provide up to 360º view.

‘There are an enormous number of techniques, interfaces and experiences being deployed by AV suppliers and systems integrators – I think that critical control room people will start to look at these and work out how they can harness these technologies in their own environments’ it hopes will be an improved voice and data platform for first responders such as police, ambulance and fire. The aim, it says, is to create a single platform for sharing data and imagery. In this context, Prater predicts that further rationalisation is on the way, with closer collaboration between different emergency services and other missioncritical utility services such as water or waste.

“The idea of shared control rooms and greater collaboration between emergency services, utilities and local authorities is definitely an idea that’s gaining force as we move towards a smart city-type of environment.

“You can see how small airports with fewer than 10 flights a day might decide to use an off-site tower or use a tower based at a larger airport. It could help with capacity, and you may see more than you can from an on-site tower – but there’s a lot of technology needed to make this happen,” he adds.

Ergonomics High-stress environments such as air traffic control rooms, which see people stationed in the same space for long periods of time, are also moving on in terms of ergonomic design, according to Prater.

“We were talking with one control room about defining the soft lighting aspects of a design and it took six months to sort out the final colour. People are trying to do a better job,” he says.

“You see some very clever tricks deployed in the commercial call centre environment and that’s another reason why I think that it’s a good time to expose ISE to the critical control industry – they are ready and poised to see what is out there.”

Future trends Right now the industry is in its third generation of command and control systems, according to Prater, and he adds that IT trends have generally kept up with commercial trends in terms of cloud-based systems, touchscreen and graphical map based interfaces.

Future game changers currently being trialled are camera sensors and drones, which, he says, “are being heavily considered to support customer service and safety”.

In terms of the Emergency Services Network and “nextgen 999” platforms, Prater recognises that the human side of an operator being exposed to an emergency call that’s coming through as a live video stream also needs to be considered. It’s a further example, he adds, of how the industry is becoming more people-centric in its approach to design.

After all, he says, “what is the propensity of operators being exposed to crime scenes for up to 10 hours a day? It’s one thing taking a report of a stabbing over the phone, it’s another seeing it on FaceTime. The wellbeing of staff has got to be an important consideration.”

Context is king: delve into the third age of digital signage at DSS ISE 2020 With its theme of ‘The Future of Digital Signage – Technology, Platforms and Solutions’, the Digital Signage Summit (DSS) ISE will explore Digital Signage 3.0, which is all about context: who is watching and when, where and why they’re watching. This year’s DSS ISE will also focus on sustainable signage, while Tobias Lang, CEO at LANG, will highlight new approaches to fire-resistant installation in public spaces.

Florian Rotberg, chairman of the DSS series and managing director of digital signage consultancy invidis, explained: “DSS ISE will discuss approaches to more sustainable AV, energy-saving operations and reuse of existing hardware. Even though many corporates are still reluctant to spend additional budgets on sustainability, we have seen a change of mindset in the past months.”

Explore the extended cineplex experience Presented by ISE in conjunction with Digital Cinema Report, Digital Cinema Summit (DCS) returns to ISE in 2020 to explore how advances in digital cinema technology are transforming not just how movie theatres around the world operate but the kinds of content they can offer to their customers.

AGORA at ISE 2020 will consider the use of stadiums for hosting a broader range of live events – including concerts and esports and the value they offer to venues – through panel discussions, case studies and expert keynote speakers.

Rise of the hologram One thing sure to catch visitors’ eyes throughout ISE 2020 is the towering holographic experience at Entrance C. Immersive holographic solutions provider Novaline Group and CarbonBlack Technologies have created a holographic installation made possible thanks to a combination of innovations, including the gen4 invisible projection surface and CarbonBlack projection screens. These screens are graced with bespoke holographic visuals created at the Brussels headquarters of motion design studio NTTRB. Other participants in this striking project include LANG AG, Panasonic, which has supplied a PT RZ31K projector enriched with 3-chip DLP Solid Shine Laser technology, and disguise, whose gx 2c handles playback.

Technical set-up is powered by Mansveld Expotech, while structural design is by Thearent, a specialist in the rental and sale of textile products for various events from theatre to trade fairs. AV installation and support is provided by the technical team of Majo media.

The CEDIA Awards 2020 is open for trade suppliers

CEDIA is now accepting award entries for the 2020 manufacturer awards category, which recognises the best products in the home technology industry.

This category includes the following awards: Best New Hardware, Best New Software and Product Hall of Fame.

The CEDIA Best New Hardware and Best New Software categories are open to products that have been released and are shipping between 30 September 2018 and 30 September 2019. Products that have been entered in previous years cannot be entered into this category again, unless a new version of the product has been released.

The entry fee for both of these categories is $300 per entry, and this rate covers entry into both the EMEA and Americas awards.

Free to enter, CEDIA’s Product Hall of Fame honours products that have had a significant impact on CEDIA members and the wider home technology industry. To enter, products must have entered the market a minimum of seven years ago.

Manufacturers have until Monday 11 May to submit their entries. A judging panel will evaluate all entries before inviting the finalists to present and demonstrate their products.

Today’s hybrid AV world Today’s AV installations are becoming larger and more networked. As a result, more reliability and performance is demanded from the IT systems that work within them.

IP is seen as a breakthrough in terms of productivity and performance, but it still has a long way to go. Most of today’s classic systems are not far away from being 100% viable as they stand. We know that high-bandwidth IP systems these days are easily capable of handling 40 up to 100Gbps or even more. That’s why G&D remains in a hybrid world and continues to support and develop a range of KVM-over-IP products and systems. Staying in this world means G&D can offer customers the best of both – classic KVM and KVM-over-IP. One such example of this commitment is KVM-over-IP matrix, the G&D ControlCenter-IP. This system provides all the advantages of a classic G&D matrix with one major difference; the signals are transmitted through standard IP-based networks instead of direct, dedicated cables. Big screens set to stand out SHENZHEN AOTO ELECTRONICS Stand: 12-C100 Following the buzz at last year’s ISE, when the CLD Series was unveiled, the miniLED range from AOTO is expanding once more, with ISE again chosen as the launch venue.

Zhenzhi Wu, vice president at Shenzhen AOTO Electronics, said: “Apart from the normal products, like SP10E, new additions to the AOTO miniLED family are being unveiled, including the Mini 0.9, Mini ES 1.5/1.2/0.7 and Mini RS1.5.”

At last year’s ISE, the company’s 8K*2K miniLED – at 12x3.375m – sparked a discussion among industry insiders.

Zhenzhi said that the miniLED family will “stand out again this year and bring further surprises”.

AOTO has been investing in miniLED research and development since 2012. The company has now developed four types of miniLED products in different pixel pitch, including 1.5mm, 1.2mm, 0.9mm and 0.78mm.

Zhenzhi added: “Compared with traditional products, AOTO miniLED shows remarkable features to provide superior visual performance and increased efficiency, such as 110% NTSC, 180º angle view and energy savings of up to 15%.”

New processor is an audio Prodigy DIRECTOUT Stand: 7-V224 Prodigy.MP, a new audio processor from DirectOut, features a modular design and FPGA-based signal processing, allowing it to cater to multiple applications in live sound, broadcast, installation and recording.

The processor gives users access to matrix mixers, summing buses and flex channels with EQ, dynamics, delay and external plugins. Flex channels can be configured as input/pre-faders or output/post-faders.

In terms of networking capability, Prodigy.MP can simultaneously host two network audio modules that support Dante, Ravenna/AES67 or SoundGrid, allowing for interoperability between different formats. It is also possible to equip the two MADI slots with BNC, SC or SFP modules. Four 8-channel converter slots complete the audio I/O with analogue line level, microphone and AES3 module options, and increase the channel capacity to a total of 416 inputs/420 outputs. globcon control software offers full control of the Prodigy series and many other DirectOut devices, and enables uniform and coherent operation. It features comprehensive snapshot management with selective recall scope-sets and also supports trigger management, which includes OSC and MIDI for control, such as from a tablet.

Install amps have got the power ADAM HALL GROUP Stand: 7-W200 Adam Hall Group has brought its latest audio and lighting solutions to ISE 2020, including the IPA series of installation power amplifiers with DSP and Dante connectivity.

The four-channel IPA412T (120W) and IPA424T (240W) amplifiers feature integrated transformers and provide 100V/70V tap and low-Z output down to 4 Ohms. Each model includes a slot for an expansion card that can be used to control the IPA amplifiers, including all DSP parameters, via Ethernet. They can also be integrated into larger networks thanks to Dante AoIP connectivity.

The DSP section includes PEQ (with matched speaker library), dynamics, matrix mixer, priority source selector and

delay. A remote bus based on CAN (Controller Area Network) architecture means the IPA series will also be capable of interacting with future remote units and paging microphones from LD Systems.

Also new from Adam Hall Group is the IMA30, billed as the first member of LD Systems’ new IMA series of installation mixing amplifiers for use in fixed installations. Extensive input and output options as well as multi-stage priority switching allow the IMA30 to be integrated in a variety of commercial and industrial applications.

With a compact 9.5in chassis and 2RU form-factor, the IMA30 offers two mic/line inputs with +24VDC phantom selector, two stereo line inputs and an integrated Bluetooth wireless signal input for connecting music sources, as well as a priority input for emergency paging. Outputs include a powered 30W at 4 Ohms output plus a 70/100V tap, while there are also bass and treble tone controls.

The IPX-TC3-WP series Decora 2-gang and 3-gang 4K60 4:4:4 AV-over-IP transceiver wall plates are being demonstrated by Aurora Multimedia. They use the company’s patent-pending IPBaseT technology based on the BlueRiver NT+ SDVoE platform.

Aurora says its latest offering combines a variety of IP technologies and features under one unified protocol using a simplified topology. Seamless switching, windowing, videowall, USB 2.0 (480Mbps), Dante/AES67 8-channel, 1Gbps Ethernet and control are some of the core capabilities of IPBaseT. The IPX-TC3-WP3 Pro also supports streaming preview, allowing content to be reviewed before it is routed.

4K transceiver delivers ultimate flexibility KRAMER ELECTRONICS Stand: 1-F20 New for ISE 2020, Kramer’s KDS-10 transceiver delivers end-to-end 4K60 resolution, flexibility and multiviewer functionality, such as Picture-inPicture and Picture-aside-Picture.

The IPX-TC3-WP Series also supports the new ReAX IP control engine option (IPE-REAX-1) based on Javascript.

ReAX is said to allow full IP control automation throughout the network without the need of an external proprietary control engine.

Complementing the hardware, the IPBaseT Manager allows full set-up and control of all functions. Key features are the EDID editor, allowing for full manipulation of an EDID to create common denominators, and Rapid Deployment Tool (RDT), which Aurora says can fully configure a large system in minutes.

Barco’s flagship UniSee LCD videowall was installed at the heart of OPEX’s new office by AV One, which fitted all of the technology solutions in the building. Connecting the dots INSIGHT AV Career Day is going from strength to strength and, crucially, it’s helping students to discover career paths they didn’t previously know existed, as Joseph Valerio, AVIXA’s director of workforce development, explains Both CEDIA and AVIXA have always been committed to the growth of our industry, and a key element of this is the career exploration events held at our trade shows. These events are not only important to our members, but they’re also very valuable to the people we invite, exposing them to what our industry offers in terms of career opportunities. Our intention is always to bring as many people as possible and to give them as much insight in to our industry as possible, while also connecting them to companies that are looking to hire great new talent.

Over the past few years the numbers of students taking part in these initiatives has increased as schools have found it valuable for their students to not only meet industry professionals, but for them to then make those connections in their own mind between what they’re already studying and how they could potentially make this into a career.

AV Career Day at ISE 2020 is no exception – we’ve seen incremental growth in student numbers here, too. This year we’ll be representing the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Spain, Italy and France, which is probably the biggest cohort we’ve ever been able to host – it’s upwards of 200 people, which is very exciting.

This success really speaks to the mission of the AVIXA Foundation, the charitable arm of AVIXA. The first pillar of that mission is more awareness that AV is a viable career path for this population and for students who may not already see themselves working here because they

perhaps have a more specific path that they’ve been directed towards. Once they come to one of our events, we always get such positive feedback as they realise the opportunities a career in AV affords. Students are able to see the many ways they can get involved in the industry and utilise those passions they already have, whether they’re studying audio, visual, media, digital signage or any of the many other skills relevant to our industry.

Throughout AV Career Day at ISE students have the chance to tour the show with AV professionals. Our members help students from their own region, in their own language, to better understand what they’re seeing at the show and, crucially, how it relates to their studies. Our members benefit from making connections directly with universities, so when it comes to hiring or implementing internships and apprenticeship schemes those relationships already exist. In turn, students benefit from direct exposure to the industry and being able to meet and network with those already in the industry and hear how their careers developed. At the end of the day we wrap up with takeaways, such as offering potential memberships or the opportunity to get involved in their own regions when we have events, ensuring we can continue the conversation.

Our work in this area is by no means done, however, and we believe the way forward and the way towards greater success will be in partnership with our members, in such a way that they can be sponsors. This could include, for

example, bringing people and schools from their own region and sponsoring that travel, or even covering the catering involved in these initiatives.

By doing this students become more familiar with the company that’s helping sponsor them, which then, of course, puts them at the forefront of the student’s mind when it comes to hiring. The more members of our industry that can be involved, the greater opportunity they will have to be the first in line for hire.

Growing AV by the gigabit INSIGHT The advent of 5G is set to offer AV professionals new opportunities to shine, but is it a revolution or merely a network reboot? Rob Lane finds out For AV, 5G could be a game-changer, but it might not revolutionise things as quickly or as totally as some commentators are suggesting. It’s certainly a huge step-change for devices connected to the internet and also to each other: 150 times faster than 4G! However, issues such as network availability and spectrum, plus infrastructure security – particularly in the enterprise sector – will need to be overcome in order for 5G to be as revolutionary as anticipated.

AV professionals will certainly have opportunities to capitalise on 5G as it becomes more widely available. Its promise of gigabit speeds and 1ms latency, and the fact that it’s designed to support IoT, means it is potentially ideal for AV applications such as sensors, smart lighting and HVAC controls.

It’s certainly true that businesses are already discussing infrastructure in anticipation of its arrival (adoption will, of course, be quicker in some countries compared with others), although currently many are considering installing 1Gb or future-proofed 10Gb Ethernet structures to pump existing 4K signals around facilities. But 5G is set to deliver even larger capacities; something approaching 20Gbps of data through a cellular network should be achievable.

5G should make easy work of remote office access and networking, allowing employees to collaborate more seamlessly virtually anywhere, with lag times and connection issues less of a concern. Remote working and working-on-the go has meant that video conferencing continues to grow in popularity in the workplace, so 5G should ensure that unified communications is a major beneficiary.

It may also fast track VR and AR (currently peripheral at best in UC) into the collaboration mix. Architects could, for instance, quickly and easily beam a 3D rendering of a building down the line to a conference meeting.

Digital signage should also benefit.

The low latency of 5G connections is set to enable superfast, immediate facial recognition, customised for users via geo-fencing. Retailers take note!

Although facility managers will doubtless be excited by 5G – and have fewer concerns regarding infrastructure thanks to there being less of a need for wired connectivity – signal strengths will continue to be a problem in large buildings such as universities and hospitals.

Existing cellular spectrums aren’t that high, and higher frequency 5G signals don’t travel as far either, particularly

in buildings: the higher the frequency, the more easily signals are attenuated by physical obstructions.

In addition, security is the same issue with 5G as it is with current 4G public networks, and that poses a particular problem for enterprises. 5G isn’t LAN after all.

Ultimately, 5G will clearly be a boon for AV integrators, but existing wired infrastructures will still need to be utilised and AV professionals should be cautioned about getting too excited by the next-gen cellular revolution.

That said, videoconferencing in particular is set to benefit, and digital signage should see a significant step-change with regard to mobile device interaction. In addition, 5G will likely give VR and AR a boost, perhaps – finally – allowing the mixed reality technologies to shine within AV installations and to deliver on expectations.

What do you perceive to be the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time?

Current key developments are the assisted automation of video production by using artificial intelligence in the production workflow, resulting in cost and resource efficiency. Furthermore, 5G will offer higher bandwidths for fast content upload and download for video streaming.

These technologies open new ways of making video and create interesting new formats for lower budgets.

Riedel Communications has announced the introduction of a new standalone network mode for its Bolero wireless intercom system.

The Bolero Standalone 2110 (AES67) standalone mode enables users to establish IP-based Bolero networks without connection to an Artist matrix.

On a related note, Riedel says that its Artist ecosystem has been further strengthened by the availability of the new Artist-1024 node, which provides higher port densities and full SMPTE 2110-30/31 (AES67) compliance.

Other developments being highlighted by the company at this year’s ISE include Control Panel and Audio Monitoring apps for the 1200 Series SmartPanel, as well as the software-defined MediorNet MicroN media distribution network device.

New speaker puts music in foreground

QSC Stand: 1-F120 Making its debut is the QSC AD-P.Halo, an integrated sub/sat loudspeaker system featuring a 6.5in subwoofer and four 2.75in satellite transducers in a single, pendant-mount enclosure. It is designed for foreground music applications, such as high-end retail, hospitality or nightclubs.

According to QSC, the AD-P.Halo provides 360° coverage, enabled by seamless transition between transducers. At 200W RMS, the AD-P.Halo offers dynamic headroom and an extended coverage area that surpasses traditional two-way pendant-mount loudspeakers, claims the company. The new speaker is integrated in a single-enclosure pendant that is ready to hang out of the box, simplifying and expediting the installation process while lowering overall project costs.

AD-P.Halo is part of the AcousticDesign Series portfolio of loudspeakers from QSC, which offer multiple form factors (ceiling-mount, pendant-mount and surface-mount). AD Series loudspeakers are said to maintain consistent sonic characteristics across all form factors to provide design flexibility for any installed application. To further speed the installation process while obtaining optimal results, QSC says that Intrinsic Correction voicing is easily deployed via the Q-SYS Ecosystem and CXD Series amplifiers.

The AD-P.Halo, is available in QSC standard black (RAL 9011) or white (RAL 9010) and may be painted to match any decor.

Dell says its large-format displays are designed to facilitate teamwork in meeting and learning spaces. The company’s advice is to think about all sources, right down to cable boxes and satellite receivers. Does the product support all the video sources you might encounter? Crestron suggests looking for support for 4K60 4:4:​4, Deep Colour, HDR10, plus support for lower resolutions, frame rates and interlaced video. Products that support only lesser variations of the 4K60 spec should be avoided, and users should be wary of manufacturer claims that support is forthcoming.

Another issue is the overall latency from source to display. Real-time responsiveness is the expectation. A lagging cursor or gamepad just ends in frustration so look for latency of less than one frame, critical in the workplace and in gaming;

avoid products that don’t support spec claims; and always put new products to the test first.

Crestron also stresses the importance of thinking about the type of network infrastructure that is required. Think about how many miles of networking cable runs through your organisation and what kind of budget you’re working with. More gigabits doesn’t mean better quality.

Further advice would be to look for easily scalable solutions that leverage existing 1Gb infrastructure and the latest network security protocols.

The company suggests avoiding costly 10Gb or complicated 1Gb/10Gb hybrid systems, which require new cabling and specialised network switching hardware.

Finally, no product is worth much if it isn’t reliable. Look for AV-over-IP solutions that have a proven track record and low failure rate in the field – instead of in a testing lab.

Rethink your sound INSIGHT Audio networking and signal processing allow sound systems to be fully optimised and evolve as required. The way you think about ‘installed’ sound also needs to evolve, says João Martins When visitors walk the aisles of Integrated Systems Europe and head for the audio exhibits, they will undoubtedly notice how networking all kinds of AV signals over Ethernet is now an everyday reality. Even for a simple audio installation, integrators will handle the project by planning a network structure, passing Cat6 cable to cover the venue, define areas or program zones with differing needs, choose the speakers according to the acoustic coverage, and finally connect everything to the amplification and DSP. The entire installation is then programmed with signals routed, levels adjusted, while the DSP handles crossovers, limiters, compressors and loudness management.

Probably, even this simple installation was simulated on software, where functional parameters were evaluated, coverage mapping was visualised and the network structure drawn.

Once the speakers are in place and connected to the network, the installer can manage the entire system, control different zones as needed and even define different scenes for different applications, or program routines according to timetables, all from the network management software and resulting control interfaces. Should the requirements change, the entire installation can be quickly reconfigured.

That’s the reality today. That’s a ‘fixed’ installation.

What is changing in 2020?

Look at that network connection in the back of the latest installation speakers. Think about it. The installation is now networked to the end-point, and the management software and DSP are now aware of each and every speaker. Today, our source for background music or any sound signal can be directly streamed to a single speaker anywhere in a network.

The complete audio chain when carried and managed over IP opens a world of possibilities for sound distribution, and it also paves the way for the most sophisticated forms of signal processing installers could only dream of… including the possibility to receive data back from the speaker!

Today, the audio industry is evolving to object-based audio sources, which means that we are able to render the final playback, mapped to the exact requirements of a speaker network… and, more importantly, the program material.

Those sound sources are today’s spatial audio or immersive audio formats, which combine multichannel with objectbased metadata.

For live performance playback this means serving an audience with improved sound pressure levels for every single member of that audience, regardless of the person’s location in an auditorium, at the same time providing exact location references for the audio sources as they are positioned on stage. Lasers focus on outdoor installations KVANT LASERS Stand: 15-C200 Laser control specialist Kvant Lasers is showcasing its systems with built-in Pangolin FB4 control interfaces at ISE this week.

The Kvant Logolas series (2-10W) covers the lower output range of its full-colour scanning lasers for outdoor use. The laser system is enclosed in a waterproof casing and controlled by a specially tuned version of the inbuilt FB4 control interface that holds all necessary animations loaded onto the SD card. AV and the brave new world of esports INSIGHT Significant predicted growth in the number of esports events and viewers around the world makes this a hugely exciting market for AV professionals, writes David Davies The days when esports was more commonly associated with amateur events are well and truly over. Since the early 2010s, the dramatic increase in the involvement of games developers – in conjunction with the availability of online streaming media platforms, such as Twitch and YouTube, and improved domestic bandwidth – have turned esports into a serious business on a global level.

Recent research indicates that this growth is unlikely to tail off any time soon. Indeed, according to Business Insider Intelligence estimates, total esports viewership is on course to rise at 9% compound annual growth rate between 2019 and 2023 – going from an audience of 454 million to 646 million in just four years. Meanwhile, the number and variety of esports events continues to grow, with stalwart franchises that have worldwide appeal – including League of Legends, CounterStrike and Overwatch, to name just a few – being joined by more events with a national or regional emphasis.

Technologically, esports continues to be great news for broadcasters and AV professionals. On the broadcast side, a number of companies have emerged as specialists in delivering coverage to streaming sites – maintaining latency that is as close to zero as possible being a chief priority for events whose real-time nature is paramount. On the AV side, there has been a growing need for vendors and suppliers to provide the kind of high-spec audio, video and lighting systems that one would usually associate with major musical and theatrical events.

Although tournaments have tended to take place in existing venues – with The Copper Box in London’s Olympic Park among the UK venues to have become popular destinations for esports – there are bound to be more bespoke facilities in the future. Notable projects announced in 2019 included

the 65,000sqft Fusion Arena in Philadelphia, which will host games for Philadelphia Fusion – the professional nine-person team in the 20-team Overwatch League – from its projected opening in 2021.

AV suppliers and integrators, some observers believe that the specific requirements of esports – including greater flexibility of configuration to meet the sometimes sharply contrasting needs of individual games – could precipitate an exciting new phase of arena and stadium design.

‘Understanding the value’ of esports ISE 2020 visitors have the opportunity to gain further insight into this dynamic market by attending the AGORA 2020 conference on Thursday (13 February, Room E102, RAI). As well as reporting on the technology strategies of the world’s leading stadiums for delivering the ultimate match-day experience, this year’s summit will also consider the use of venues for hosting other types of live event – including concerts and esports.

One panel, entitled ‘Understanding the Value of Esports for Clubs and Stadiums’ will, according to organiser MONDO | STADIA, “look into the incredible growth of esports and how it has developed within the world of sport. With many clubs and federations fully joining the esports revolution, what is the plan for the future? It’s certainly going to be interesting to see how this market develops over the next few years. With increasingly elaborate venues hosting events and streaming activities likely to encompass more platforms and content forms than ever before, there are sure to be challenges ahead in terms of keeping a lid on the complexity of esports tournaments. Integrators with a solid track-record of delivering to venues that host busy schedules of major live events could therefore be among the greatest beneficiaries, but in fact there is a real possibility that esports could ultimately be a key market for nearly all areas of professional AV.

Its speakers are 36mm wide by 22m deep and, depending on the model, either 710mm, 1,010mm or 1,210mm long – yet are said to provide room-filling sound. The company also claims an advantage in that, unlike the norm where volume drops off markedly as distance from the speaker increases, its range loses only 3dB for each doubling of the distance.

BEC Akustik says that its speakers combine the best of both worlds – conventional cone speakers and drivers that use magnetostatics. In the horizontal plane, the transducers attain a beam angle of 160°, with just 40° in the vertical plane.

BEC Akustik notes that its design means that room acoustics are no longer a significant issue – which means that they can be deployed in challenging environments such as restored buildings, modern lobbies, entrance halls and even cathedrals.

Given that its speakers achieve sound that is balanced and dynamic almost independent of the listening position, they are also said to be ideal for boardrooms, meeting rooms and auditoriums – as well as for home audio 2.1 to 7.1 installation.

The latest range of connector products from AEC Connectors is being exhibited at ISE 2020, including the newly developed AT3-1331G. Features of this product include the body of the plug being lathed in one piece to avoid the conduction loss that can occur when the signal passes through a different structure and interface.

A new RS-SL06UW lens, described by Canon as super-high resolution, ultra-low distortion, joins the previous line-up of six motorised lenses. From ultra-wide to ultra-long zoom, these lenses are designed to enable a range of flexible installation options. The RS-SL06UW has a short-throw ratio of 0.54:1 and a large lens shift of -15/+75%. It has been a focal point of company HQ reception areas for some time, installed to make a strong positive impact and communicate financial success. It’s even created rivalry between the world’s leading corporations as they compete to create the most striking entrance display. Yet perhaps the most exciting and highly disruptive application for corporate LED is the presentation and meeting space market. These solutions are now competing head-on with LCD and projection, stepping beyond flagship boardrooms as prices begin to fall.

Demand is driven by a widening availability of out-ofthe-box solutions with predefined screen size, pixel pitch and resolution. Sold through the mainstream IT/AV run-rate

channel, they currently demand a hefty price premium, but as ASPs continue to tumble, they will prove to be a highly disruptive force in the corporate meeting space. The complexities of installation are becoming less of an issue too, as the rise of interchangeable tiles and out-of-the-box solutions pave the way for simplicity.

LED’s main advantage is its large image footprint, with no discernible bezel. Of course, a tiled LCD videowall is great for creating larger displays at a lower cost, but it has a noticeable bezel join. Using AI solutions for offline-to-online communication, Addreality claims to offer its clients the potential for increased customer engagement and new revenue streams with audience analytics.

Addreality is an in-store customer engagement platform that generates programmed targeted content on in-store screens, kiosks, background music and any digital touch point at the point of sale (POS). In addition, Addreality provides feedback and analytics regarding the efficiency and engagement of the marketing content. A GDPR-compliant algorithm can be used to allow for testing of different marketing hypotheses, dependent on the KPIs and metrics for online and offline channels. This enables content to be personalised for each customer or customer segment. It can also be managed in real time and remotely from a laptop.

With a width of 18mm, the KNX DMX Gateway 544 by Weinzierl offers a compact gateway between KNX and DMX512, with up to 64 freely configurable channels. The device enables simple integration of DMX devices into KNX systems and can act as a DMX master or slave.

In master mode, up to 64 dimming channels or up to eight RGB/RGBW channels are available. Several subsets of DMX512 addresses can be assigned to each dimming channel and each colour of an RGB/RGBW channel. Each channel can be linked to up to eight scenes and four sequencers are available in the Gateway to perform more complex tasks.

In slave mode, KNX actuators can be controlled by DMX. For example, the room lighting, which is part of the KNX installation, can be controlled via a DMX lighting control panel. Up to 64 DMX512 addresses can be individually evaluated and sent to KNX. Dimming value, switching with switching threshold and RGB value are available for interpretation.

Two push buttons and three LEDs allow a local operation and a visualisation of the device state, and the device includes 16 independent functions for logic or timer control.

Smart Things is presenting its range of docking and charging stations for the iPad at ISE 2020, including new wall mounts compatible with the 10.2in and 10.5in iPad models.

These wall mounts are in use around the world in a variety of commercial, industrial, residential, hospitality, medical, mobile and maritime environments.

Smart Things is also exhibiting its 12W in-wall power supplies, PoE chargers and the new inductive charger for charging mobile devices through tabletops. Existing furniture is not damaged as the charger is glued underneath the table.

Phase Technology’s Dante Soundbar is an ultra-thin 2-way Dante-enabled digital end-point solution in a soundbar configuration.

Featuring an impedance built-in amplifier and DSP, the soundbar incorporates a right and left speaker with four 3in ultra-longthrow polypropylene woofers with NBR surrounds, four bass radiators and two 0.75in synthetic soft dome tweeters.

The soundbar measures 1.5in deep where it meets the TV and is 6.75in tall – it is designed to integrate seamlessly underneath 55in and larger monitors.

Ken Hecht, vice president of MSE Audio, said: “The soundbar brings Dante connectivity from end-to-end in conferencing and video installations. Making the soundbar interoperable with other Dante products gives integrators additional flexibility when designing and installing audio systems.”

Plug-and-play for producers NEWTEK Stand: 15-M255 IP video technology provider NewTek is showcasing its TriCaster Mini, the latest addition to the video production system line.

The plug-and-play set-up of TriCaster Mini is designed to enable video producers to get started quickly, creating sophisticated programmes in resolutions up to 4K, for delivery to all types of screens.

Its small size and light weight mean it can be located anywhere and launched in minutes.

Also included are hundreds of entry-level and advanced production tools such as built-in virtual sets, animated transition effects, replay for sporting events, streaming, recording, projecting, one-touch social media publishing and more.

Exclusive to the new TriCaster Mini is the NDI|HX Camera Application for mobile devices, available as a download from the Apple store. This allows video, up to 4K UHD from an iOS device, to transmit over WiFi as an NDI source and connect with TriCaster Mini systems on the network.

The MAS-A100 is said to offer advanced clear audio quality for both speech reinforcement and recording through a unique combination of beamforming technology and Intelligent Feedback Reducer functionality. This enables the recording of speech while suppressing unwanted feedback, using Sony digital signal processing and algorithms. In addition, the microphone can automatically adjust the output volume for consistency and ease of listening.

The microphone also has auto-noise reduction capabilities to minimise background sound from air conditioners, projectors and so on.

Sony says the microphone is easy to install as it supports the Dante AoIP standard and PoE, so power is managed through a single network cable. It is also provided with free Sony Microphone Array System Manager software (MASA-1) which supports central setting and management of multiple microphones in various rooms via IP.

According to the company, the StingRay 83 raises the bar for outdoor audio quality in luxury residential, commercial and marine applications by producing a deep, warm and natural bass response down to 40Hz, with a smooth midrange and solid upper frequency. Designed with outdoor theatre audio in mind, the unit delivers peak power handling of over 300W. The StingRay 83 features a 30mm midrange device, a 25mm tweeter and an 8in highpower cone woofer in combination with Stealth’s Fidelity Glass Advanced flat front-radiating surface to give ultra-wide dispersion within a hermetically sealed enclosure.

Lift can raise 30kg projector SCREENINT Stand: 5-T60 New from Screenint is the SI-H L 50 HC compact lift, which is designed to support video projectors up to 30kg. It offers a descent from 14cm to 54cm. The lift is intended to be installed inside a narrow false ceiling to hide the projector, lift and cables, and comes equipped with what the company says is a silent motor. According to Screenint, unique features of the lift are the very limited height needed in the false ceiling to hide it, together with the large home cinema projectors it can support.

The unit is supplied with extendable side brackets to allow easy fixing of the panel of the false ceiling via adjustable threaded bars. The panel can be mounted under the projector, even if the projector is larger than the lift itself. The SI-H L 50 HC is equipped with safety screws, which prevent the lift from extending further than the preset end stop in the event of failure.

An additional feature of the new projector lift is a spiral cable-gathering system for the projector cables, meaning that they are hidden and tidy when the projector lift ascends.

PRO DISPLAY Stand: 1-N126 This year at ISE, Pro Display has brought three products from its Mirrorvision range. The newest of these is the 3.9mm pixel pitch Mirrored LED Screen, which has dimensions of 2.5x1.5m and is capable of being built up to 3.2x2m. Content appears on the screen, which reverts to a mirror when no content or black content is displayed.

Pro Display is also showcasing its new High Reflective Mirror Screen Display, which is designed for applications that require an optimum mirror effect when the display is turned off, and a 4K image when it is turned on.

The company believes that the 43in screen, which has an oversized portrait mirrored fascia, is suitable for many applications, including retail stores, beauty salons and even residential use. ISE opts for Ashton Bentley at HQ upgrade ASHTON BENTLEY Stand: 14-110 ISE recently turned to Ashton Bentley to upgrade its Munich HQ. The intention was to provide a large meeting space while retaining existing rooms, and ISE was delighted with the results.

By moving a dividing wall, two independent 12-seater rooms can now be effortlessly transformed into one large boardroom-style space for 30 that is capable of housing video calls and perfect for presentations.

As ISE was already a user of Ashton Bentley, the modularity of the system made it simple to reuse existing Ashton Bentley displays, chassis and control. This was made even easier thanks to the company’s in-house design team, including professional AV specifiers and furniture solution,

designers using the latest CAD and CGI software. Ashton Bentley has a proven track record of working with clients to produce bespoke solutions such as this.

The result for ISE included: large displays in each space, plus repeater monitors when rooms are combined, allowing content to be seen by everyone; AV control for roomcombining using Crestron, programmed by Ashton Bentley; and audio split across the spaces and combined when necessary, including Shure equipment.

The two tables in the individual spaces could not be moved, so a simple-to-deploy in-fill table was designed to join them, creating one large meeting table when rooms are combined.

Ashton Bentley can advise, design and supply systems to meet all requirements, to enhance collaboration space experiences and to improve the efficiency of meetings.

Delivering 1,000 UC rooms in 90 days AVEX Stand: 1-E50 For any international organisation, improved collaboration and communication will only be achieved with a truly worldwide strategy and approach. That’s what exhibitor AVEX is looking to bring with its Velocity Rooms system.

Being demonstrated in Hall 5 is Sonos Port. The successor to the original Connect, Port is said to deliver richer sound and extends the Sonos platform to traditional home audio equipment.

According to the company, Port was designed with the professional installer community in mind, with a shared mission to improve how a customer lives with technology, blending into their homes and their lives.

Users can connect Port to their traditional stereo and use the Sonos app to easily stream music, podcasts, audiobooks and internet radio on amplified audio equipment. They can also use Port’s line-in connection to listen to vinyl, CDs and stored audio files on Sonos speakers throughout the home.

Port offers clearer sound with an updated digital-toanalogue converter, a 12V trigger that automatically turns on an amplifier to get the music playing more reliably, a new versatile design that fits seamlessly in an AV rack, and compatibility with Apple AirPlay 2.

Like all Sonos products, Port gives users access to more than 100 music streaming services, an open developer platform with regularly updated features and integrations with smart home partners, and an easy way to expand sound systems to other areas of life and home.

Port follows the introduction of Sonos Amp, a powerful and versatile home audio hub for traditional wired speakers, and Sonos Architectural by Sonance, a collection of installed passive speakers for indoor and outdoor use designed in partnership with Sonance.

Using this year’s ISE to showcase the breadth of its expanding CI and traditional hifi product ranges is Dynaudio. The company is showing its Custom Performance, Studio and Outdoor ranges, and demonstrating the new Sub RCC in-surface subwoofer, which is receiving its first European outing.

The Sub RCC can be installed in walls and ceilings, either into standard 2x4 stud bays before construction or on the surface afterwards, using the supplied adapter kit. It uses Reactance Cancelling Configuration (RCC) technology derived from Dynaudio’s pro studio subwoofers: two drivers work in opposition to each other to eliminate vibration in the speaker and the wall or ceiling.

The whole assembly is housed in an aluminium enclosure. To keep things simple when it comes to specifying the right sub for the job (surface-mount or between studs), Dynaudio includes brackets for both situations in the box.

Two magnetic grills are also supplied for different installations (retro-fit and pre-fit) – and they can be painted for a seamless finish.

A united front David Labuskes, CEO of AVIXA, talks to Jo Ruddock about consolidation, diversity and the growing recognition of CTS in Europe AVIXA is sharing its latest research from its Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis report throughout the show.

What are some of the more interesting pieces of data you’ve uncovered through your research?

Our research shows that the pro AV industry is growing at two-times the expected global GDP over the next five years.

Most estimates forecast under 3% growth for GDP, while AVIXA forecasts predict 5.7% growth in pro AV revenues. This is a testament to the rising importance of AV technologies across just about every industry.

In addition, APAC has surpassed North America as the largest market for pro AV products and solutions. Years of higher GDP grown in Asia has contributed to higher growth for pro AV in the region as well.

Lastly, digital signage is forecast to become the largest pro AV solution area by 2024, eclipsing conferencing and collaboration. While signage is expanding in every market at a faster rate than many other solution types, the trend is most pronounced in Asia as a burgeoning middle class create an appealing audience for advertisers.

What is driving mergers and acquisitions in the industry?

Many factors are driving M&A activity in the pro AV world.

Globalisation and wider market consolidation play a role, as multinational companies want pro AV integrators that can install co-ordinated solutions in all their offices worldwide.

Industry maturation is an aspect, too, as certain products win out and their manufacturers grow and snap up smaller competitors. Diversification – the best hedge against economic fluctuations – is another leading motivation, as businesses expand into other regions, markets and solution areas through acquisitions.

AVIXA is hosting half-day conferences for higher education, with SCHOMS and EUNIS, and for enterprises, with the AV User Group. How have these two markets for AV solutions evolved in recent years?

Education has long been a key market for pro AV providers, and for good reason. In 2019, education generated $19.7 billion in pro AV revenue globally and is expected to reach $26.4 billion in 2024, according to our Industry Outlook and Trend Analysis report. Today’s college students are true digital natives with high expectations for technology, and education institutions are tasked with delivering on those demands.

The corporate market continues to account for the largest segment of pro AV revenue. Pro AV solutions for corporate office environments are expected to generate nearly $52.4 billion in 2019 and this is expected to reach $68.5 billion in 2024 globally.

While companies still seek to provide workers with the flexibility to determine when and where they can do their best work, a growing faction of corporate America is attempting to create more innovation by bringing employees back to home base. AV technology implementation is the way for companies striving to make the office ‘the place to be’, in part by improving user experiences. AV technologies that streamline ways of communicating and collaborating in modern workspaces and using equipment are part of this effort.

There has been strong growth in CTS certifications in Europe. How are you ensuring this continues?

We have enjoyed strong growth of CTS in the UK and Ireland over the past 20 years along with strong growth in Scandinavia and some parts of Central Europe over the past 10. Popularity continues to rise for the certification with a surge of interest in France, Germany and Spain. The latter two are gaining ground fast due to in-language offerings, most recently in German. There is no doubt that, with the arrival of ISE in Barcelona, there will be great interest in the CTS progamme locally, however it is still in its infancy.

The key factor for ongoing success of CTS in Europe is the support of the industry in getting as many people trained up and certified through co-hosted programmes with our members. A very important part of that is promoting CTS through their communication channels. We don’t know 82 ISE Daily 2020 Tuesday 11 February

everyone locally – they do. The second part is the demand.

We are seeing more and more end users and consultants specifying that any bids for work on projects are accompanied by staff who have CTS. AVIXA is hosting a diversity panel on the Main Stage today. How would you characterise the progress being made on diversity and inclusivity issues in the industry?

The fact that I’m being asked this question means we’re making progress. But the fact that you’re asking me this question means we aren’t there yet. I am a naturally optimistic person. I tend to see the world through the lenses of hope and progress. While this bolsters me at times, it also often leaves me vulnerable to frustration and impatience with the pace of change. We are changing as a world, society and industry. I wish that change was faster, and I promise that AVIXA will continue our efforts to hasten that change. Why? Because, first of all, I believe it is a just and right cause.

Secondly, I think that it is virtually impossible to be innovative without having a diverse set of opinions in the room. I think you run a better business, you make better decisions and you execute more effectively on strategy when you bring people into a room that have strengths that come from different backgrounds.

In 2018, a group of minorities and members of the LGBT community wanted to look at forming a Diversity Council.

We had our first council meeting at the InfoComm show in Las Vegas that June and it was an amazing experience. Since then, the council has grown to more than 180 members and hosted nearly 15 events in the US and the UK to push the conversation of diversity and inclusivity forward. These conversations need to be had by everyone who makes up our industry – we want to make sure that everyone who wants to make a career as a professional in AV feels welcome.

A conversation about inclusivity, bias and diversity is a generational conversation. It requires a commitment and an authenticity that isn’t part of an agenda at a board meeting but instead is a cultural value. If we all commit to this and we act as sincerely as we converse, then it will get better, and when that happens, we’ll be living in a better world.

This is the final ISE in Amsterdam. How are you feeling about the move to Barcelona?

In 2013, I and my family packed up our belongings, watched them get loaded onto a truck over the course of 12 hours and drove to our favourite sushi restaurant in Bel Air, Maryland.

From there, we drove to Northern Virginia and our new home as part of the adventure of becoming the new CEO of AVIXA. I remember the excitement and the sadness that intermingled in our conversations during those times. When you ask me how I feel about the move to Barcelona for ISE – well, I feel nearly the same as I did then.

ISE has evolved so much since its debut in 2004 in Geneva, Switzerland. In sheer attendee size alone, it’s flourished from 3,500 attendees to over 80,000. And since 2005 we’ve called the city of Amsterdam home. With this amount of growth, we acknowledged that in order to serve our members, attendees and exhibitors at the show, we needed to find a new home. We can better achieve these objectives in a venue that can evolve with us and continue to reflect the market we work in. We are beyond thrilled to bring the show to Barcelona in 2021. We’re excited for attendees to experience the next chapter of ISE. The city of Amsterdam has been such a great host to us all these years, and we are deeply thankful for its hospitality.

Are you able to share any plans AVIXA has for the 2021 event?

This is an opportunity to reimagine AVIXA’s role in ISE. It is an opportunity to work with our partner CEDIA and all the many participants, whether they be exhibitors, attendees or press, to set a course for the future.

With so many people celebrating, growing and discovering the audiovisual industry at ISE, it is a uniquely powerful stage.

We’ve certainly been working hard as an association to better leverage that stage for our messaging while being sure not to distract from all the great news from our exhibitors and other show partners.

For now, I’d just say this – you will not want to miss experiencing the first ISE show in Barcelona! I’m sure it will be extraordinary!
