Welcome to the Spring Virtual Homebuilding & Renovating Show. For the best part of 30 years, Homebuilding & Renovating Shows have provided a chance for homeowners looking to extend, renovate, improve or build their own homes to make their dream a reality — by meeting face to face the suppliers of the products and services they’ll need, the chance to have a look at the materials they’ll put in their dream homes, and, of course, to listen and ask questions of independent experts to help get their project off on the right track. The current COVID situation has led us all to think about how we do things differently. But early on in the crisis we recognised that a significant majority of our Homebuilding & Renovating readers and visitors wanted to continue as best they could with their project. The record audience on our website certainly confirms that there is no lack of appetite for ideas, information and progress. And so we decided to come up with an event that made the most of what we can do within the limitations set for us. And so, we’ve invested in what we think is the very best virtual re-creation of the experience you’d have at a live Homebuilding & Renovating Show. You’ll be able to listen to experts giving you tips and ideas on how to run projects well; you’ll be able to meet, remotely, the suppliers of products and services you’ll need. In fact you’ll find everything you would normally find at a regular Homebuilding & Renovating Show — and all from the comfort of home. There’s a full programme of events in this guide, along with a list of the exhibitors, all of the stands are manned by actual people, so it’s a great chance to chat, interact, find out more and, most importantly, keep moving your project forward. Check out our free seminar programme, and make the most of this unique virtual event — specially put on by self build and renovation experts for you. I hope you enjoy the event, and that you and your families continue to stay safe.

Ask the Architect The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) supports British architects and introduces new people to the world of architecture.

f you’re planning to extend or reconfigure your home, one of the best places to begin is to appoint a firm of architects. Right from the start, they will spend time understanding you, your family situation, your existing home, and your aspirations. Investing time at the design stage allows you to try out different ideas before agreeing a way forward that suits your circumstances and budget. Their experience and expertise will quickly uncover the best solutions, with you in control throughout. Architects do so much more than design buildings. They oversee projects from conception to completion, with expertise in securing planning permissions, sustainability, building regulations approval, selecting builders, and managing the construction phase. Chartered Architects work to a strict code of conduct set out by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and those who work for RIBA-accredited Chartered Practices meet the ultimate quality standard in the UK. Highly skilled, these firms over everything you’d expect from a professional organisation: knowledge, experience, integrity, competence, fairness, with adequate resources and proper insurances in place. What makes them stand out from the crowd though is that they operate to extra-high standards, running a

quality management system and holding appropriate health and safety, environmental management, employment, and equality , diversity and inclusion policies. In short, they do everything to give you peace of mind. Behind the education and ongoing professional training, you’ll find approachable, friendly individuals, all passionately focused on devising the best design solution for your project, so helping you to realise your aspirations. You are unlikely to build or substantially alter or extend your own home more than once in your life. Hiring an architect not only mitigates the risks of things going wrong but leads to the best possible end result.
