Excitement in the Air as InfoComm Show Floor Opens By Clive Young It’s been a long time since InfoComm was held in Las Vegas—four years, as AVIXA CEO David Labuskes pointed out in his opening remarks to kick off the show. The convention last graced the Las Vegas Convention Center in 2018, and while much has changed since then, the sea of smiling faces that attended Wednesday morning’s ceremonial ribbon cutting showed that the industry is ready and eager to make up for lost time. “We are so happy that you are here—but I think, when I look out across this crowd, we’re only half as happy as you are,” quipped Labuskes. “This is the only place and time in North America where the entire ecosystem of the AV industry gathers—from the geeks to the artists, from the manufacturers to the inventors, to the distributors, to the installers, to those who’ve been in the industry for 50 years and those who’ve been in the industry for 50 days. You’re here to learn from each other. You’re here to share your experiences.

You’re here to have jaw-dropping experiences, to see innovations, to touch things you haven’t been able to see or feel or hear for way too long. And I know that you are excited!” A cheery roar from the crowd confirmed that suspicion. D=SIGN Conference Addresses Multiple Elements of Digital Signage Installations By Mark J. Pescatore Digital signage is about more than choosing a display or a content template. D=SIGN, a two-day conference at InfoComm, explored various elements of the digital signage industry through case studies, panel discussions, manufacturers’ training and more. For example, during the Day 1 session “Blueprint to Build-Outs: How Architects & Digital Designers Form Powerful Partnerships,” one of the most important considerations for a project is the “why.” Specifically, according to Eran Sharon, creative technology director of Gensler, it’s important to ask why your client wants a particular digital signage system. Another session, “Making a Proof of Concept Bullet Proof: Lessons Learned from Labs,” discussed the importance of testing digital signage systems before deployment. “Bleeding edge does cut you,” admitted Chad Hutson, CEO of Leviathan. Any digital signage technology that is new to market can be problematic, he explained, until it’s been widely deployed and users can help “get the kinks out.”

A panel discussion that detailed the importance of digital signage proof of concept testing was one of many sessions during the D=SIGN conference. Laura Davis-Taylor, founder of Branded Ground, emphasized the importance of the “fail fast” concept during the testing process. Finding problems early in the process allows developers to pivot quickly and optimize the system based on what doesn’t work. She called it a “test-andlearn” process—and while it can take longer initially, failing to address technology or experience issues early in the process can cost significantly (continued on page 78)

Audio Demo Room Derby, Part 1 By Clive Young The excitement on the InfoComm trade show floor is pretty intense, but sometimes you wish there was even more—and if that’s the case, you need to check out this year’s InfoComm Audio Demo rooms. Up on the second floor of West Hall are 10 top manufacturers showing off everything from their networking options to imposing line arrays, and whether the sound is on or not, they’ll knock your socks off (if that actually happens, you should stop by QSC’s demo room to earn yourself a new pair of Q-SYS socks). Digital Signage: Business Critical By Derek Wiley At Wednesday’s Market Insights Lunch, Managing Director for Invidis Consulting Florian Rotberg and David Haynes, Publisher/Editor for Sixteen:Nine, walked attendees through the ongoing trends in the digital signage space. Chief among these trends were insights on the unfortunate supply chain issues affecting most of the AV industry, why sustainability in digital signage is important and how entirely businesscritical digital signage has become across a vast number of industries. The lunch started off with the encouraging news that 2021 defied all expectations by having an extraordinarily strong post-lockdown rebound, with global units in the digital signage space seeing a year-over-year growth of 21 percent. This information reinforced the notion that while recovery has been slowed down by supply shortages, the industry trend is on mark for a continuous uptick for market size. The causes of these supply shortages were

covered in detail, including the shocking fact that, as of April 2022, 12 percent of all shipped goods worldwide are stuck in ports. Additionally, 60,000 to 80,000 truck drivers are currently unavailable, many of whom are from Russia or Ukraine. Though in recent years the Asian digital signage industry has chiefly switched to cargo trains for transport with great success, 10,000 kilometers of this railway go through Russia. This has obviously made the option of cargo-train transport unfeasible, compounding supply chain complications. As a result of these difficulties, manufacturing has shifted closer to markets. The industry is taking up creeds of “make where we sell” and “source where we make.” Sustainability and “green signage” were also emphasized in the presentation. An oft-overlooked consideration of digital signage is the cost of electricity. A key example Rotberg highlighted was the case of 1000 outdoor displays for the Shell Corporation, measuring 85 inches each. (continued on page 78)

Named EW-DX, the new microphone systems will simplify professional workflows by utilizing refined technologies to deliver a digital UHF system that can be scaled with ease.
