Three home theater masters put on an intensive, fullday training course yesterday titled “Home Cinema Design Masterclass” where they discussed home theater design best practices, in what presenter Anthony Grimani labeled as a “college senior-level discussion.” The training was a day-long session with more than 100 integrators receiving in-depth insights on theater design from Theo Kalomirakis, often considered “The Father of Home Theater” and winner of numerous CEDIA Best Home Theater Design awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award and who currently serves as executive director at Rayva; Joel Silver, founder of the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF); and the aforementioned Anthony Grimani, president of Grimani Systems. Lutron Set For a Big Show By Anthony Savona BOOTH 2501 “I have worked here for 21 years now, and I’ve got to say this is by far the biggest CEDIA that Lutron has had in well over a decade,” said Melissa Andresko, chief corporate brand ambassador, at a pre-show briefing she hosted with Lutron co-president Ed Blair. Coming from Andresko, that quote sets some high expectations that Blair is confident Lutron can deliver on. “The centerpiece of what’s new is the next-generation platform for HomeWorks,” said Blair. “We’re going to be announcing the QSX processor, which is going to elevate HomeWorks and will provide the customer and the integrator with a solution that is unique in the marketplace.” The next generation HomeWorks system brings QS wired, QS wireless and Ketra together into a single system, making HomeWorks easier to design, install, activate, program and service. The processor is future-ready, with increased processing power and memory for larger projects, and it is compatible with all existing HomeWorks wired QS and wireless RF devices. And with the addition of the Clear Connect Gateway, it can control Ketra light sources. “HomeWorks has a ton of great benefits for the dealer community and for the homeowner,” said Blair. “Programming tools are now merging into those single points of control, and we’ll be expanding from 50 devices per hub to 200. With the expansion of our Clear Connect Network--Type X, we’ve developed some new

Creating a Community Around Private Cinema By Matt Pruznick How is a top-notch, precisely tuned private cinema like a collection of fine wine? Both are aspirational luxuries whose purchase is driven by emotion, yet the latter enjoys a much greater community and awareness. On Wednesday morning, Sam Cavitt of Paradise Theater led a class on the ways in which purveyors of home theaters can elevate their trade to the prominence and eminence of other more mainstream luxury pursuits—something he feels is essential for the long-term success of the CEDIA channel. “There’s a lack of enthusiasts, there’s a lack of community,” Cavitt said. “What we have going on right now, it’s never been better. We’ve got all of these capabilities, but at the same time people are pushing back, saying it’s not necessary, it’s not needed.” Cavitt began with a look at the state of the industry, which despite having an unrivaled product is reduced to seeking customers, rather than being a sought-after service. Part of this, he believes, is due to advances in consumer of home entertainment technology and the fact that people are more inclined to research things on their own. (continued on page 62)

Honorees are nominated by CEDIA staff for contributions that enhance, develop and refine the organization’s programs and offerings.    The 2019 Volunteers of the Year are:   VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR  GEOFF MEADS, PRESTO WEB DESIGN Geoff Meads has been involved with CEDIA since the mid-2000s. The 30-year AV business veteran is now owner of Presto, a U.K.based web design agency specializing in the smart home, Hi-Fi and home cinema markets. He’s been contributing to CEDIA training and e-learning courses for more than 15 years and has served as a regular instructor during that time.   Meads’s years of service as a CEDIA volunteer include several CEDIA working groups (designer, instructor, technical, standards and certification), plus five years serving on the Professional Development

Advisory Council. Recently, he’s taken an active role in the UK Smart Home Apprenticeship Trailblazer Committee. URC Unveils New Architectural Speaker Line BOOTH 3001 URC is introducing its first-ever line of architectural speakers at CEDIA Expo 2019. The line consists of four models of in-ceiling speakers and a pair of outdoor speakers, all available mid-October. URC’s in-ceiling speakers feature a patented, toolless, secure clamping design and removeable speaker wire terminals, providing a time advantage over a conventional in-ceiling speaker. “We did some installation time trials throughout development,” said Lars Granoe, VP of product management. “Each speaker takes less than one minute to install, saving time and, ultimately, money.” The flagship model in-ceiling speaker, the SP8EX, features an 8-inch woven fiber cone woofer and a 1-inch magnesium aluminum dome tweeter.

» HOME CINEMA (continued from page 6) Grimani stated that audiences—like customer installers’ clients —love good performing bass, and that 30 percent of what people like about an audio system happens between 20-100Hz, the bass region. If a system’s bass response and performance isn’t worthy, the entire system will suffer. Of course, low frequencies are challenging and difficult to pull off correctly—especially across multiple seating positions, which should be the ultimate goal. And while getting good bass response from one subwoofer at one seat isn’t too difficult, getting that same bass response across 20 seats is. One of the biggest legends surrounding bass performance is that bass is non-directional and installers can put the sub anywhere—but this is totally false, and measurements will prove it. Achieving solid bass performance requires the correct use of equalization, in almost every case. “You can get it right with one sub at one seat, but then you should immediately go out and buy a lottery ticket, because it is your lucky day!” Grimani joked. Deep bass is possible for multiple listeners across multiple seats, but multiple subwoofers are always needed. Two subs are better than one, three subs are better than two, and four subs are better than three. However, adding more than four subs actually has diminishing results. The solution to getting good bass is a six-part process, which includes calculating room dimensions, using bass damping methods, optimizing seating locations, optimizing subwoofer and speaker selection and location, correctly setting crossovers and tuning the room (time optimization, EQ, levels, etc.). You then need to follow all of this with testing of known material to verify the results.

Theo Kalomirakis, who over his many years in the industry has designed private cinemas for movie stars, sports legends and world leaders, followed with a session called “Uniting Design and Technology for the Complete Package.” Kalomirakis has designed over 800 custom theaters since 1990, and during his time he shared his experiences from his early theater designs and challenges he has faced over the years. Kalomirakis spoke about how integrators can understand and work with designers and architects for the best results—balancing performance, aesthetics and usability in high-end home cinema. Developing a fruitful relationship with designers is good business for both sides, and we, as integrators, need to help them understand the requirements of technology.

The big debate facing many designers and installers today, Kalomirakis said, is the discussion between media rooms in common, shared spaces in the house versus dedicated theater rooms. While many people use media rooms for daily casual viewing, they will never deliver the isolated, focused movie watching experience of a dedicated room. Joel Silver concluded the day by offering an indepth session “How Bright Does a Projected Image Need to Be?” This was intended to help integrators determine the appropriate brightness levels of projected images. Silver, the 2018 CEDIA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, detailed the impact of emerging video standards and technologies on desired home cinema brightness levels, focusing on HDR in a projection-based environment.

Remove your own key-person dependency. Focus on the high-level operation stuff that you need to do, because you now have people you can manage and find people who are better at those roles than you.” Another key point Boyle and Cook discussed in detail was tracking time on the service level. “Make sure you are billing for your time,” added Boyle. “It starts with tracking 100 percent of it, and looking at what is in warranty and what is not. Make sure you are, in fact, actually holding your team accountable for charging for the work that they do.” Key takeaways from the session included: Consistent documentation of all events and client communication is key. This can be a free or charged ticketing system. Give your clients a dedicated service channel and nowhere else. Narrowing the ways your clients can contact you will help provide better service by reducing lost information and calls. Focus on the client experience first, technology second. Focus on the human and provide solutions.

If you are using multiple rebooting systems, stop it and pick one. As you scale, you need to compartmentalize the responsibilities. Don’t think you have to do it all. Consistently meet expectations according to your service promise—be realistic, talk with your team and decide on what you can do. Hold the line—work with your team and avoid exceptions to your standards.

We’re commoditized.” The solution to this, Cavitt believes, lies in being able to better convey the passion behind private cinema to bring it on par with categories like art, watches and automobiles. “It’s an art form that conveys emotion,” Cavitt said. “How many other art forms convey emotion? And we’re in the position of delivering that to people so that they can have it time and

time again, better than they can at any commercial cinema.” Cavitt shared some methods for building this understanding in clients, such as finding something they’re passionate about and relating the superiority of a well-engineered cinema to their own discerning tastes. Also important is discussing the ways in which a theater will improve their lives, for example, by bringing their family together more often. Ultimately, however, he feels that success hinges on improved cooperation. “We have to work together as an industry to raise the awareness that we’ve got something great,” he said. “If we can unite and be talking about that, and not just be willing to compromise all the time, then we can make a difference.”
