Every

cause serious short

Speaker Danielle Rusch will walk participants through the effects of good and bad hiring and retention practices while teaching leaders how to focus and apply healthy fundamentals to improve hiring, retention, and eventually, your bottom line.

Participants will have the opportunity to self-assess the health of their current hiring and retention efforts to then identify their specific pain points in the process to begin to make improvements in the health of their company.

Participants will walk away from this session with an understanding of their current situation and applicable tools to start shifting from chronic or acute hiring pain to healthy, competent hires and increased retention.

IWD NEW EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENT DIVISION

If you ’ re an employer facing workforce challenges, Iowa Workforce Development wants to hear about it. That's why we ’ re hitting the road to speak with as many of you as possible.

Earlier this month, IWD officially launched its new Business Engagement Division, reorganizing employees around the state to create a more efficient team for assessing and resolving the workforce challenges of Iowa employers. The first to do item for members of the new division is an employer outreach blitz. Throughout this fall, IWD leadership and members of the new division will deploy across Iowa to share information about available resources and provide specific points of contact for assisting employers with workforce needs.

“We’re going to be asking Iowa employers about the challenges they’re facing in terms of workforce issues, then we’ll work to connect them with the solution,” said Tim Goodwin, Division Administrator for the new division. “This is the first step in building a one-stop shop for employers at Iowa Workforce Development.”

For more information on available services, visit Iowa's One Stop Shop for Employers | Iowa Workforce Development. If you’d like to chat about a visit, email iaworks@iwd.iowa.gov(link sends e mail), or call us at 1 833 469 2967.

DES MOINES PARENTNOVEMBER 2022

Drew and Kara have lived in Des Moines’ Highland Park neighborhood since 2013. Seeing the need for a neighborhood hub, they dreamed up The Slow Down Coffee Co. "We knew opening a coffee shop and advocating for a more accessible, walkable neighborhood would allow for conversation, community, and neighbors helping neighbors. We’re excited to be a part of Highland Park’s reinvigoration."

Marissa Hernandez is the artist behind The Slow Down Coffee Co’s mural!

We happily source our coffee from Windmill Coffee Roasters. Windmill’s dedication to training and quality control in addition, of course, to their stellar, full spectrum coffee beans made our decision to partner with them an easy one. In addition, Windmill believes in the power of community and in building and maintaining relationships with farmers, wholesalers, and customers.

When the phone rings at Nerotek Industries, the conversation is usually about more than just a video screen rental. “Our clients want their events to be special and we walk them through the possibilities of what our screens and equipment are capable of. We take the mystery out of the technology and make it accessible to everyone ” , explains Richard DeFrancisco

Nerotek Industries was co founded by Richard and his wife Pavla out of a desire to offer a better audio/visual rental experience to event producers and growing businesses. The core product is a custom built video wall, constructed on a vehicle so that it’s designed to plug and play, and set up in a matter of minutes. “There’s this a ha moment that happens at our events the moment the screen is lit up A lot of our clients are impressed with how easy it is to incorporate something like an LED wall into events because we take care of most of the planning for them We know there is plenty else to think about while setting up an event”, says Pavla.

And this really is at the core of Nerotek’s business: to ensure the client feels supported throughout their entire rental experience.

This focus on building relationships extends beyond just LED video screens, but into audio engineering an industry that Richard has been a part of for over 20 years. “Having been involved in audio for so long, I’ve met a lot of talented individuals along the way that are now trusted partners in our own business. If there’s something specific you need, we can most likely support it ”

Nerotek Industries is excited to be going into their second year with FuseDSM and to be part of a strong and impactful network in the Des Moines metro. “It’s important for businesses to support one another, and help each other grow whether it’s for profit, or for a cause ” , notes Pavla, “and we appreciate the opportunities that FuseDSM creates for everyone to do just that. It leads to a stronger community "

3 TIPS FOR TOP-NOTCH FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT IN FALL AND WINTER

Colder weather is here but it doesn’t mean the chores go away or walking around gets any easier When the leaves fall and snow and ice come, you need to be ready Are you? Try these three simple movement tests to make sure you are safe going into the fall and winter months:

Day to Day Movements

Whether you are picking up toys around the house, digging out your car from the plow’s rough pass or pushing the snow blower, using your legs to move in all directions is needed to avoid injury from all angles.

Test: 2 direction lunge

Setup: Begin standing upright with your hands resting on your hips and your feet shoulder width apart.

Movement: Keeping your trunk upright, step forward and lower your body toward the ground into a lunge position, then carefully return to the starting position: Now with the same leg, step to the side, lowering your body into a lunge position, then carefully return to the starting position Repeat with the opposite leg

Tip: Make sure to keep your trunk steady Do not let your knee collapse inward or move forward past your toes as you lunge

Goal: To be able to lunge both forward and to the side with both legs

Lifting

Whether it is lifting heavy shopping bags from the East Village shops, bags of leaves, holiday decorations, or piles of snow, you have to use your legs But what does that even mean? You need to be able to lower yourself down to the level of whatever you plan to pick up and use your legs to do it.

Test: Squat with a chair tap

Setup: Begin in a standing upright position approximately 6 8in. in front of a chair.

Movement: Lower yourself into a squatting position, bending at your hips and knees, until you lightly touch the chair. Return to the starting position

Tip: Make sure to maintain your balance during the exercise and do not let your knees collapse inward.

Goal: Squat to the edge 5 times in a row

Ice

Ice has a funny way of sneaking up on you Single leg standing balance is a great measurement of your readiness to handle all the slippery stuff

Test: Single Limb Stance

Setup: Begin in a standing upright position with your feet together and arms resting at your sides

Movement: Lift one foot off the floor, balancing on your other leg Maintain your balance in this position

Tip: Try not to move your arms away from your body or let your weight shift from side to side For safety, stand near a sturdy item, like a countertop or sink

Goal: To be able to maintain your balance without tipping over 1 leg for 30 seconds with your eyes open 1 leg for 10 seconds with your eyes closed

After completing these three tests, ask yourself: did I pass? Was there pain? Was there a difference between your left and right side? Reaching out to East Village Physical Therapy is a great way to identify what’s wrong, make a plan, and avoid a big injury that could sideline you at work or home EVPT opened its doors in May 2022 and has been excited to serve the FUSE community ever since At EVPT, we give one on one care for patients of all ages and abilities Together we can prepare for the winter months, prevent injuries, recover from surgery, or fix your daily aches and pains We offer manual therapy, dry needling, accept all major insurance and have cash rates available No referral needed

STAY LEGALLY COMPLIANT

Internal requirements

To stay legally compliant, you’ll need to meet external and internal business compliance requirements Most external requirements involve filing paperwork or paying taxes with state or federal governments

Internal business requirements are for your own record keeping You should document your compliance with internal requirements closely with company records You might need them when you decide to sell your business or if a legal action is taken against your business

Requirements by business structure

Corporations have the strictest internal requirements. Corporations should hold initial and annual director and shareholder meetings, record their meeting minutes, adopt and maintain bylaws, issue stock to shareholders, and record all stock transfers.

LLCs have less strict internal requirements. However, they are generally advised to maintain an updated operating agreement, issue membership shares, record all membership interest transfers, and hold annual meetings

Other business structures have few, if any internal requirements However, it’s rarely a bad idea to document important decisions with your business

Ongoing federal filing requirements

Most businesses won’t have federal requirements beyond paying federal taxes and complying with the Affordable Care Act. Make sure that you meet all federal tax obligations, including income and employer taxes. The Affordable Care Act requires businesses with 50 or more employees to report to the IRS that they provide health coverage. If your business has any federal licenses, permits, or certificates, you’ll need to keep those up to date.

Other federal requirements

Some business activities are regulated but don’t require filing Make sure to stay in compliance with any applicable marketing and advertising laws, copywright laws, workplace poster laws, workplace health and safety laws, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Licenses, permits, and recertification

BUSINESS OWNER TIPS
NOVEMBER 2022

There's far more intelligence and energy inside organizations than most of us realize But how do we access all the intelligence and capability our people have to give? As a leader, you have the power to multiply what your team brings to the organization, and you also have the power to diminish talent and energy. This is the focus of leadership expert and best selling author Liz Wiseman's book Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter

Wiseman discovered two types of leaders in her research: Multipliers and Accidental Diminishers These leaders operate in dramatically different ways and get vastly different levels of capabilities from others The research shows that Multipliers capitalize on peoples' intelligence, talent, and insights without asking for a bigger investment.

Join Alan Feirer as he guides you through Wiseman's findings to develop a practical solution that enables leaders to become Multipliers who:

Reduce the impact of diminisher tendencies

Ask better questions

Look for genius

Create space for others

Offer more significant challenges.

With a Master’s degree in education and a history of building solid programs in secondary education since 1991, Alan Feirer established Group Dynamic as a leadership training business that started in schools and soon branched into businesses and organizations, going full time in 2010

Since then he has motivated people in all types of organizations and industries, from health care, to agriculture, to construction, to non profits, to Fortune 200 companies, and equipped them with tools to further develop their teams on a healthy and revitalized foundation.

Substitute unsweetened applesauce for butter or oil

Use mashed banana in place of butter or oil

In the past few years, the world has become extremely technology focused In other words, if you are not careful with all of your devices, you may get hacked By using a strong password, you can protect yourself and your information

Be unique: “Password”, “ABC”, “12345”, “qwerty”, are some of the most common passwords in the world. If you have such a simple password, you allow hackers to easily guess what it could be. Be unique with your passwords. It is recommended to start using passphrases, rather than passwords. A paraphrase is a significant phrase that you use as a password. For example the phrase “I love West Bank so much October 3, 2022” your password would be “ilwbsmoctober32022”. This combination of letters and numbers is the best practice when creating a password

No personal information: Any information about yourself that can be easily found on the internet, should not be used in your password Examples include your birth date, pets names, mom ’ s maiden name, or school If this information can be accessed by friends and family, a hacker can figure it out as well

Switch it up: Do not use one password for all your different devices and accounts This makes your information more vulnerable to widespread hacking If one of your accounts gets hacked and you are using the same password for other accounts, it could cause a snowball effect. It is better to use a variety of passwords to limit the damage in an information breach.

The more the merrier: It is a great idea to use multistep authentication when accessing your accounts. When you log into an account, a one time code is sent to your phone number or email address before you are granted access Another safe option is using biometrics such as fingerprint or facial recognition Because biometrics are unique to you, they are much more difficult to access than passwords You will be better able to protect your information if it takes more steps to get into an account

Use password manager: With all of these tips of password protection, it can overwhelming remembering a unique password Never write your password down next to your device but rather use a password manager. There are many free tools out there that offer password managers to generate unique passwords.

Take time this Cyber Security Awareness month to give your passwords a refresh! .

Speak PR’s founder was a member of the “East & South Chamber of Commerce”, so that was my first introduction My firm had the honor to work with their board and leadership to explore the expansion of their footprint to include the north side of Des Moines I live in this area that was not yet represented by a chamber. Our firm worked to create a new look and messaging to be inclusive of all members of the chamber and is today “FuseDSM Your Chamber of Commerce ” After this process, I was hooked by the energy and mission of this chamber and the rest is history

What is a Signature Offering of Your Chamber? That's a loaded question, but programming our regular monthly events, FuseNews, our monthly digital magazine that offers low cost advertising with a big reach and, in 2023, our unique Leadership Academy

But most notably, what sets us apart as a chamber is our culture, our sense of community and inclusion We live our Community Statement:

Our Community: We are a community of business owners stimulated by providing explosive business growth opportunities forged from diversity, collaboration, and authentic human interaction We champion the success of our members with dignity and support one another with pride Passionate integrity is fused into the very core of our community where hard work, inclusion and meaningful relationships define our past, present, and future

What is Your Chamber’s Biggest Accomplishment in the Past 12 Months?

We recognized that there are economic development opportunities throughout our footprint that sometimes just need attention We invited strong partners to help support these projects and opportunities Our first was Hull Avenue near Grand View on the east side of Des Moines With the help of our partners, NDC and the City of Des Moines, and our Council Woman Linda Westergaard, commercial redevelopment is beginning within that commercial node.

What Initiative/Project Are You Looking Forward to in the Upcoming Year?

Our Economic Development Committee is taking its magic, enthusiasm and their partners to the south side where we are looking at opportunities for development at the commercial node anchored by B&B Market.

What Partnership Tools/Resources Have Been Most Beneficial to Your Chamber Members?

Our chamber and our members benefit from the government policy efforts. Our members are busy focusing on growing their business. They appreciate being educated on, and having GDMP advocate on behalf of, the policies that impact their business is a great value

SBA ECONOMIC INJURY DISASTER LOANS

AVAILABLE TO IOWA SMALL BUSINESSES

U.S. SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Small nonfarm businesses in 30 Iowa counties are now eligible to apply for low interest federal disaster loans from the U S Small Business Administration, announced Director Tanya N Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center West. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought in the following primary counties that began Aug 9, 2022

Primary counties: Clarke, Iowa, Jasper, Lucas, Madison, Marion, Polk, Poweshiek, Union and Warren; Neighboring counties: Adair, Adams, Appanoose, Benton, Boone, Dallas, Decatur, Guthrie, Johnson, Keokuk, Linn, Mahaska, Marshall, Monroe, Ringgold, Story, Tama, Taylor, Washington and Wayne

“SBA eligibility covers both the economic impacts on businesses dependent on farmers and ranchers that have suffered agricultural production losses caused by the disaster and businesses directly impacted by the disaster,” Garfield said

Small nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred.

“Eligibility for these loans is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage These loans have an interest rate of 3.04 percent for businesses and 1.875 percent for private nonprofit organizations, a maximum term of 30 years, and are available to small businesses and most private nonprofits without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship,” Garfield said

By law, SBA makes Economic Injury Disaster Loans available when the U S Secretary of Agriculture designates an agricultural disaster The Secretary declared this disaster on Oct 3, 2022

Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible for SBA disaster assistance Agricultural enterprises should contact the Farm Services Agency about the U S Department of Agriculture assistance made available by the Secretary’s declaration. However, nurseries are eligible for SBA disaster assistance in drought disasters.

Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at https://disasterloanassistance.sba.gov/. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659 2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance For people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, please dial 7 1 1 to access telecommunications relay services. Completed applications should be mailed to U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, TX 76155
