Uvodnik

Intro

Dragi čitatelji,

Dear readers,

the new year is almost upon us. It is like an important chapter of a book that needs to be written. We can all create our own story if we set good goals and strive to accomplish them by cherishing and celebrating only the experience that matter most to us and that wish we could have with the people we hold dear.

Since its inception, Furaj.ba magazine has been depicting the positive side of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the side we tend to miss out on because of all the gloomy news we hear. Furaj.ba will continue to do so and present BiH to the world, and the world to BiH. In this edition, we take you to Morocco, have fun in popular ski resorts in BiH, celebrate New Year’s Eve with Zdravko Čolić in Sarajevo, talk to successful managers and support the wonderful people who accomplish their goals by pushing the boundaries. We hope the following pages will inspire you too.

MARIJELA MARGETA HAŠIMBEGOVIĆ, DIREKTORICA NARODNOG POZORIŠTA

Dama koja može sve

GDJE GOD DA SE POJAVI, PAŽNJU PLIJENI SVOJOM ENERGIJOM, OSMIJEHOM I DOTJERANOŠĆU Razgovarala: Elma ZEĆO, Fotografije: EDVIN KALIĆ

J

RIZIKUJTE, AKO ŽELITE USPJETI Prva ste direktorica Narodnog pozorišta u devet decenija njegovog postojanja.

– Vrijedni, dobri, časni i pošteni ljudi. Kreativci, osobenjaci, revolucionari...

MARIJELA MARGETA HAŠIMBEGOVIĆ, DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL THEATRE

18

TheLady Who Can Do It All

WHEREVER SHE APPEARS, SHE DRAWS ATTENTION WITH HER ENERGY, SMILE AND STYLE Interviewed by: Elma ZEĆO, Photo: Edvin KALIĆ

E

ven as a student, the first female director of the National Theatre located along the river, knew how to push the world of rigid physics with emotions, which is why her mentors directed her towards the stage, where they believed she would be able to transform theatre literature into a multidimensional world of performance with ease. And they were right. However, she is not just full of an unstoppable creative energy, but she also possesses an unbelievable will to never give up on her intentions.

RISK, IF YOU WISH TO SUCCEED You are the first female director of the National Theatre in the nine decades of its existence. Why do women not get an opportunity to be in charge of theatres more often? – We must admit that we live in a male world. Women find it hard to fit into the dominant manner of decision-making, or they underestimate themselves with the idea that it is easier to take the path that doesn't require sacrifice. I consciously „entered the fire“, completely directly, I knew what to expect, but I also knew that nothing could defeat hard work, love and sacrifice. Women, still, find it easier to take risks, and you have to risk, if you wish to succeed. The definition of success is also different in male and female entrepreneurship. Care and nurturing comes easier to women, which is something we need today, as well as community service. You have managed to bring back audiences to the theatre. How did you do it? – The audience felt our positive energy, our desire for quality and our respect towards them. An audience is an irreplaceable part of every show and it knows how to

reward artists for their art. Also, a high quality and rich repertoire are the recipe for greater theatre attendance, i.e. a program that can satisfy the tastes of all generations! At a time of spiritual poverty, how does one motivate artists to take a chosen path and push the boundaries? – An artist corresponds with the environment and filters all external energy through their personal energy, which provides them with inspiration, or it, possibly, separates them from the essence. That is where you need to recognise your place in leading the artist to never lose faith in their missionary path, to not forget why they are on the “shrine” known as the stage, and what their role is in society. Motivation comes through working on good and inventive works, stories, and it also happens through fruitful collaboration with professional and gifted colleagues. People are also encouraged through affirmation, as well as their own example that there's no giving up, only moving forward!

REVIVING THE STAGE While you were studying at the Faculty of Architecture, your professors noticed that you were very talented at scenography. What was it that made you decide that it would become your profession? – My creative energy was always unusual and very refined. My ar-

tistic expression was amorphous, emotive, I put emotion into every physical world, I explored the behaviour of material in relation to people. All this led my professors to direct me towards the world of performing arts, where my own art felt at home. How do you approach the creation of an imaginary world, which in the end needs to look real? – I breathe life and purpose into each imaginary world, I give it soul and time, and as such, it becomes a part of our existence. How much do you think your architecture degree helped you in your work as a scenographer? – My architecture degree helped me understand the logic and psychology of space, and also that with the aid of artistic elements I'm capable of creating the laws of statics in the physical world, which live only on the stage. Because, when you have a request for a part of your backdrop to become a cupboard, which then, for example, needs to fly, you realise that the dimension of creativity transcends reality. A part of your aesthetic expression was also costume design. Which criteria does an ideal costume need to fulfil? – The theatre concept of costume is extremely complex. Namely, you must understand that for artists the costume makes the „skin“ of

INSPIRATIONAL TUNISIA Marijela believes that it is useful to leave your everyday life behind and go somewhere, changing the rhythm of life in this manner. That is why she loves to travel. She will never forget some of her trips. “Forever ingrained in my memory is our honeymoon, staying in Tunisia and a place in the desert with a blood-coloured lake. It looked surreal. It is indescribable how much inspiration nature can give us.”

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

the character they are playing and whose essence they must portray. At the same time, a performer must have the freedom of movement in their costume. The artistic treatment of a show is something we first see in a show and which connects us to further plot development, atmosphere and energy. First, we see, then we hear. Is there a show that you are emotionally attached to in particular? – I'm emotionally attached to many shows, but the show The Legend of Ali Pasha always holds a special place for me, directed by (the late) Sulejman Kupusović. Our greatest director and I collaborated for years and every project with Sule brought something special. For this show, I explored the life of the čaršija and our dear Sarajevo. When the curtains went up at the premiere, the audience gasped, and for me that was the most beautiful gift that I had ever received.

A PERSON GROWS THROUGH TEMPTATIONS People perceive you as a great lady. How much of that comes from the way you were raised, and how much from your life choices? – I think that this is something you take from your home. I was raised in a home atmosphere where the words: „I won't“, „I can't“, „I don't know how to“ didn't exist, which is why today I can do anything! Also, I was taught that it is not polite to speak negatively in company, which is why today I exude positive energy and I never burden the external world with the internal one. My life choice is that I want to fight for good things, to personally, together with my surroundings, live through as many beautiful and happy moments as possible. 20

Who were your role models in life? – Hard-working, good, honourable and honest people. Creative people, eccentrics, revolutionaries... And where do you get your positive energy from and what is it that makes you a vital person? – I regenerate very quickly, as if I'm allergic to bad feelings. Actually, you learn that as you experience temptations, you actually grow. Nothing is as bad as it seems, we don't know why something is good for us in that moment. In summary of 2017, what will you remember it by? – My life trajectory is directed mostly towards the theatre, treating personal and work life very similarly. Time at home mostly passes in plans and preparations for further creative theatre illusions, while theatre dynamics inspire me to always be able to heartily create again and be happy with what has been done. I will remember the current year mostly through the words of our dear audience, which won me over numerous times, and confirmed and indebted me with their gratitude and compliments for our

work. My office is often described as a lighthouse, after all something must shine in this turbulent reality. Because of that, I also personally feel affirmed as a human being, who is on the right path and who is fulfilling her artistic mission.

FORMULA FOR A HAPPY LIFE “You have to be realistic when it comes to your needs and expectations, explore your inner world and become your own best friend, not always wait for someone to make you happy, do it for yourself, then you are capable of loving more and appreciating love. Love and respect yourself and others around you, be gentle towards yourself and others, each given emotion will be reciprocated a hundredfold. Live your life honourably, that might be the hardest path, but it is the only one that pays off. Live each day to the fullest and believe that there is a place under the sun for every creature on the planet.”

Posjetila sam grad Sarajevo, svidio mi se stari grad, elegancija, boje njegovih građevina i ljepota brežuljaka koji okružuju grad, kao i bogatstvo njegove baštine obilježene otiscima historije. vrednim izazovima”, ovim lijepim riječima otvorila je svoj intervju za magazin Furaj.ba Nour El Houda Marrakchi, ambasadorica Kraljevine Maroko, čije je zvanično predstavništvo smješteno u Zagrebu, također zaduženo za diplomatske odnose s BiH.

UZORNA KARIJERA Koliko dugo ste u diplomatiji? – Već 18 godina radim na području diplomatije. Prethodno sam radila kao trgovinski analitičar u Maroku i u WTO-u. Kako vidite saradnju Maroka i BiH?

– Turizam u Maroku predstavlja sektor s dugom tradicijom zahvaljujući prirodnim bogatstvima zemlje. – Maroko posjeduje bogatu hiljadugodišnju kulturnu baštinu obilježenu miješanjem Berberske, Kartaške, Rimske, Arapsko-muslimanske i Andaluzijske civilizacije. Volite li Vi putovati? – Mnogo sam putovala i nastavit ću putovati kako bih otkrila druge kulture i civilizacije širom svijeta, te upoznala građane različitih država.

Ruralni turizam možete doživjeti u regijama visokog i srednjeg Atlasa, a imate također mogućnost pješačenja i uživanja u nevjerovatnoj prirodi planina.” 25

HER EXCELLENCY, NOUR EL HOUDA MARRAKCHI, THE AMBASSADOR OF THE KINGDOM OF MOROCCO

I am impressed with the

Bosnians and Herzegovinians

“I felt at home in Bosnia and Herzegovina, since Morocco and B&H share common values - a multicultural country with open and tolerant Islam. I visited the city of Sarajevo, I liked the old city, the elegance, the colours of its buildings and the beauty of the hills surrounding the city, as well as the richness of its heritage marked with history prints. Also, I am impressed by the capabilities of the population, which, despite the recent war, shows certain calm, courage and joy of living, as well as a definite determination to face the economic challenges”, opens the interview with Furaj. ba Nour El Houda Marrakchi, the ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, whose official representative office is based in Zagreb and is also in charge of diplomatic relations with B&H.

AN EXEMPLARY CAREER How long have you been in diplomacy?

MOROCCO AND B&H ARE ACHIEVING EVER BETTER COOPERATION IN THE FIELD OF TOURISM, BUT THE SECTORS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES AND AGRO-INDUSTRIES, IN WHICH MOROCCO SHOWS HIGH EXPERTISE, COULD ALSO BECOME A BUSINESS LINK OF OUR TWO COUNTRIES IN THE FUTURE Interviewed by: Elma ZEĆO 26

– I have been working in diplomacy for 18 years. Previously, I worked as a trade analyst in Morocco and the WTO. My background in the field of economy and trade was an important asset for dealing with economic diplomacy. As of my position as Ambassador of The Kingdom of Morocco I focus on bringing closer the political, economic, cultural and social relations between the two countries, to consolidate the bilateral relations, a role that I undertake with seriousness and also great satisfaction. How do you see the cooperation between Morocco and B&H? – Diplomatic relations between Morocco and B&H know positive dynamics including political, economic, cultural and social areas.

What makes Morocco so attractive? – Morocco has a rich, thousands of years old cultural heritage marked by the mixing of the Berber, Cardassian, Roman, Arab-Muslim and Andalusian civilizations. In Morocco, tourists can satisfy all their senses by relaxing in the sun, enjoying the rich gastronomic offer which was declared a second finest world gastronomy , with the rhythms of diverse Moroccan music from the south to the north: Hassani in Moroccan Sahara, Ahwach in the Souss region, Ahidouss in Central Atlas, Reggada in Rifu, Melhoun and Andalusian music in imperial cities. Do you like traveling? The excellence of the relationship between the two friendly countries is reflected in the exchange of visits by senior officials, as well as in mutual support when it comes to issues of common interest. The accession of BiH to the European Union will enable the expansion of this cooperation, given the privileged relations of the Kingdom of Morocco with the EU. There has been an increase in cooperation between Morocco and B&H, especially in the field of tourism, but the sectors of renewable energy sources and agro-industries are also areas in which Morocco has developed proven expertise, and therefore they can also be of interest in terms of cooperation.

LAND OF A LONG TOURIST TRADITION Of the total number of tourists in Morocco, how many of them come from Southeastern Europe? – Tourism in Morocco is a sector with a long tradition thanks to its natural assets. In 2016, out of 10.33 million tourists, 80,000 of them came from Eastern and Central Europe, and the goal is to come close to the number of 100,000 in 2018. The tourism sector contributes about 11.4% of Morocco’s GDP, and accounts for nearly 5% of employment in Morocco.

– I have traveled a lot and will continue to travel to discover other cultures and civilizations around the world, and to meet the citizens of different countries. The country I want to visit is China. The Kingdom of Morocco does not have an embassy in BiH for now. Will something change in the future in this respect? – I welcome the excellent relations between Morocco and B&H, as witnessed by the intensity of bilateral cooperation. We hope to open an embassy in Sarajevo within reasonable deadlines, according to the dynamics of the expansion of Morocco in regards to opening of several representative offices in the world.

PARADISE FOR TRAVELERS If you want to experience the history of the ancestors of Morocco, then visit the capital cities of the dynasties which ruled in Morocco since 789, and these are Marrakesh, Fes, Meknes and Rabat. “Coastal tourism has been developed from south to the north thanks to the wide Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts in various cities of the kingdom, such as Dakhla, Agadir, Saidia, Tanger, Tetouan and Al Hoceima, with the beaches as long as the eye can reach, with fine golden sand. You can experience the rural tourism in the regions of high and middle Atlas, and you also have the option of hiking and enjoying the incredible nature of the mountains. “ 27

Kasbe i medine, tipični su nazivi za stare gradove i utvrđenja sjeverne Afrike, najčešće opasane zidinama. Unutar njih tiskaju se kuće s ravnim krovovima, a unutar labirinta vijugavih, uzanih ulica, i džamije čiju dekoraciju često čine raznobojne pločice s geometrijskim i floralnim motivima, uz obavezna dvorišta pomorandži.

Prilikom posjete Maroka mnogi turisti, nažalost, zaobiđu Meknes, staru prijestolnicu zemlje s predivnom medinom.

MOROCCO Incredible Country An

ONE OF THE MOST EXOTIC AND MOST VISITED COUNTRIES OF WEST AFRICA IS LOCATED BETWEEN ALGERIA AND THE SAHARAN ARAB DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC AT THE VERY NORTHWEST EDGE OF THE AFRICAN CONTINENT Written by: Ivana DUKČEVIĆ

orocco borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west, whereas the west Mediterranean Sea washes its shores to the far north. Between these two points, near the former town of powerful mafia and smugglers, and nowadays the port town of Tangier, Morocco comes closest to Europe—the Strait of Gibraltar separates Morocco from the southernmost tip of Spain by just 7 kilometers.

KASBAH AND MEDINA Morocco is one of the Maghreb countries. Its name comes from the Arab word al-Maghribiyah, which means the West and refers to all the Arab countries of Northern Africa west of Egypt: Morocco, the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. In the central part of the country, the monotony of desert landscapes typical of Africa is broken by the Atlas Mountain Range and its highest peak Jebel Toupkal (4167 m), where the snow rarely melts. The red and grey colors of the Atlas Mountains, the bare hills and cliffs, village oases and mud huts surrounded by palm trees, make up a wonderful place which made

it to the big screen. Here and there, between the cliffs and near the villages, blue waters of mountain brooks and rivers are finding their way down the mountains. River Draa (Darha or Dara), Morocco’s longest river, which flows through the Draa Valley, fairy-like little towns called Ouarzazate and Zagora, and a delightful oasis in the Ziz Valley, are some of the favorite tourist destinations in the Atlas Mountains. One of the most romantic Berber fortifications – Aït Benhaddou – is located on the plateaued basin of the Western Atlas Mountains. The so called kasbah or ksar, a town of red mud plaster buildings built along desert caravans paths, stands on a small hill on the left bank of the Ounila River oasis, where some of the Hollywood blockbusters were filmed (Prince of Persia, Gladiator, The Mummy, The Last Temptation of Christ, etc). Kasbah and medina, typical names of old cities and fortresses in Northern Africa, are generally bounded by walls. They are packed full of flat roof houses, mosques decorated in colorful tiles with geometrical and floral motifs in the labyrinth of narrow winding streets, and gardens with orange trees. Spanish Moors brought these architectural elements to Morocco in the 15th century when they were forced to abandon their homeland Andalusia – Al-Andalus.

INTERMEDIATE TOURIST STOPS West of the Atlas Range, in Central Morocco, Fez, Marrakech and Meknes, the most prominent trade, cultural and historic cities of Morocco, and today’s most important intermediate tourist stops, are located. You can spend hours wandering the street medinas of any of these cities exploring ancient bazaars and Arab souks, shopping for typical souvenirs, or watching master craftsmen at work. Marrakech is the largest and bestknown tourist center in Morocco. It is worth visiting the great Djemaa El-Fna square full of all sorts of stands and performers attracting tourists especially at dusk, leather tanneries, the Koutoubia mosque, famous souks with various types of merchandise, and the El Bahia Palace. Finally, catch your breath and relax at Majorelle Garden, an oasis with topical plants and cacti. In Fez, within the medina, there is a place where leather is tanned in “tanning pools” made of stone. Famous photographs with colorful circular opening and the local people who have been tanning leather the same way since the Middle Ages, cannot begin to illustrate the distinct odor of leather tanning in

the Leather District; this is the only place where you can experience it first-hand. In Fez, you should also see the fourteenth-century Bou Inania madrassa, Berber Pharmacy and a shrine – the Merenid Tombs. When visiting Morocco, many tourists unfortunately fail to visit Meknes, which was once the capital city of Morocco, and its wonderful medina. Take a tour around Bab Mansour, one of the medina’s 27 old gates, the Hedim Square, Heri esSouani and the Bou Inania madrassa.

PORT LOVED BY WELL KNOWN PEOPLE Apart from Agadir in the south, which is the best-known seaside destination in Morocco, famous for its hotel resorts and sandy beaches, Casablanca and the capital – Rabat are the largest and most modern cities of the Moroccan Atlantic coast. Casablanca is a big city, and the legendary Casablanca movie, the story of a great romance between Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart filmed in the 1950s, was named after it. Casablanca is also known for a grand medina and the world’s third largest modern-design mosque – King Hassan II Mosque. On the other hand, in the less visited capital city of Rabat you should explore the ruins of the old town founded by the Carthaginians, the Hassan Tower and the Royal Mausoleum. In Rabat, you can also see the Royal Palace, but only from the outside.

Many agree that the best way to end the tour around the country is to spend the sunset at Chefchaouen (or Chaouen). A charming little town on the brink of the Atlas Mountains is known for its white houses and details in light blue colors. As the sun goes down, take a stroll down streets of the old medina or stop by at some café or the Ras el-Maa Waterfall for a little refreshment.

You can end the tour of Morocco by visiting the Tangier Port. As you look at the Spanish mainland across the Gibraltar Strip, think about the reason why Henry Matisse, the famous French painter, Jimmy Hendrix, the American Musician, a few members of the Rolling Stones, Winston Churchill, the British politician, or Mark Twain, the writer, frequented it or even lived in this port city for a while. 31

Chefchaouen is a city in northwest Morocco. It is the chief town of the province of the same name, and is noted for its buildings in shades of blue.

It’s called the Blue City, but Chefchaouen could more accurately be called the 50 Shades of Blue City, as it’s full of so many variations on a theme. Powder blue, cyan, robin’s-egg, indigo, cobalt, azure, periwinkle – it’s painted in an endless array of shades that make it feel truly alive.

According to legend, the practice of blue buildings dates back to the 15th century, when Jews fled the Spanish Inquisition and settled in Chefchaouen. In the Jewish faith, blue reminds worshippers of the sky, and therefore, God.

NERMIN MUZUR, DIREKTOR TURISTIČKE ZAJEDNICE KS

SARAJEVO je IN NAKON ŠTO JE VIŠE OD DESET GODINA RADIO NA ODGOVORNIM POZICIJAMA ZA L’ORÉAL PARIS, PREUZEO JE RUKOVODEĆU POZICIJU U TURIZMU DAJUĆI NAJBOLJE OD SEBE SARAJEVU I SVOJOJ DRŽAVI Razgovarala: Elma ZEĆO, Fotografije: Irfan REDŽOVIĆ

N

ciju.

i Ujedinjeni Arapski Emirati.

i stanovnike Sarajeva. – Preko deset godina sam radio u privatnom sektoru i u skladu s prirodom posla stalno putovao obilazeći brojne zemlje. Za Pariz me vežu poslovni razlozi, Konju duhovni, a Madrid sportski. Posjetio sam sve i male i velike gradove.

Svaku ovu granu treba zasebno pripremiti i razvijati.”

NERMIN MUZUR, DIRECTOR OF THE TOURISM ASSOCIATION OF SARAJEVO CANTON

SARAJEVO is IN AFTER OVER TEN YEARS IN LEADERSHIP ROLES AT L’ORÉAL PARIS, HE TOOK OVER A MANAGERIAL ROLE IN TOURISM, DOING HIS BEST FOR SARAJEVO AND HIS COUNTRY Interviewed by: Elma ZEĆO, Photos: Irfan REDŽOVIĆ

U

sed to old-fashioned concepts of how they view economic development, Nermin Muzur, director of the Tourism Association of Sarajevo Canton, is correct when he says that many citizens still find it hard to believe that tourism in BiH can make a serious contribution to economic growth. “Tourism, which always had potential, by now should have been our reality, from which we derive large profits. The best indicator that this is the fastest-growing field is reflected in the fact that from 10,000 newly employed people, over 60% work in tourism and hospital-

ity in Sarajevo Canton”, explains director Muzur, who along with his small team of employees has been working intensively on the promotion of cultural and historical sights of this region, with significant results in less than a year since the newly-formed Tourism Association of Sarajevo Canton began work.”

Let’s take advantage of our resources When visiting world tourism fairs, what kind of reactions do you encounter?

- The Tourism Association of Sarajevo Canton has made the promotion of Sarajevo Canton its priority, i.e. we promote BiH, and Sarajevo, as its capital and tourist destination. We have decided to take its promotion to the next level, and our focus is on developing cooperation between the public and private sector. Therefore, we have been to fairs in Riyadh, Dubai, Taiwan, and in London, and this month there will be Izmir, we get a lot of tourists from there in BiH. Because of that, it’s important to present Sarajevo Canton over there even better to attract more tourists. We visited Taiwan, because we recog53

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

nised that the Asian market has the biggest potential in the upcoming period. We are very happy with the response and interest in BiH, and with how familiar the people over there are with BiH, the ones that have already been here. We’ll try to unify all the tourism associations from BiH at one promotional booth, as interest is on the rise, which means more intense promotion is required in order to capitalise on the potential. Who is most interested in Sarajevo, including the Sarajevo region? – The Tourism Association of Sarajevo Canton has been keeping a database, which has been electronically tracking the check-in of guests in the city for over six months. Based on this information and the data from the Bureau of Statistics of Sarajevo Canton, it can be said that when it comes to European countries, the highest number of tourists come from the Republic of Turkey, while when it comes to non-European countries, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates take the lead. Then there are the countries of the region, where Croatia is singled out. The overall number of tourists in Sarajevo is constantly on the rise. In the three months of the summer season, we had growth of 26%, compared to the previous year. That trend has also continued in the months following the summer season, recording growth of 13 to 15%, which in the

context of the world trend is a very good average. What interests tourists the most? – In the peak of the summer season, the Tourism Association of Sarajevo Canton made a pilot project, surveying over 1000 tourists from all over the world in Sarajevo. The motives for coming to Sarajevo for 74% of tourists were for a holiday

and relaxation, while 58% stated that they wanted to get to know the culture and cultural sights. 90% of them were happy with their stay in Sarajevo and were prepared to recommend it to friends as a potential destination that they should visit. The things that they weren’t happy with relate to, for example, the road infrastructure and heavy traffic. What’s also interesting is how they found out about Sarajevo: over 60%

Visa facilitation agreements, more tourists “We are trying to simplify the visa regime for a considerable number of countries in cooperation with authorised institutions, especially for China and Arab countries, as that would certainly contribute greatly to economic growth and tourism. An increase in the number of tourists from Far East Asia has been recorded, therefore, it would mean a lot to us if visa facilitation agreements were in place – i.e. establishing one-month tourist visas and having them issued with a simplified procedure. Negotiations between the Council of Ministers and the Government of China are at an advanced stage. Serbia and Montenegro, who have already done this and have had good effects, are also trying to quicken the procedure for BiH, as tourists are interested in our country and, of course, when they come from far away, they want to visit the entire region. This story will be finalised, that’s the plan, in the upcoming period, and change the configuration of the number of incoming tourists.”

54

of them via the internet, then by recommendation from friends and family, and 10, 11% arrived through travel agencies from BiH or their country of origin. We’ll continue with surveys to get a better idea about tourists, who also think that it is very cost-effective to come here.

Useful investments Is it economically justified to organise a pompous celebration for New Year’s Eve? – There are two arguments for why that should be done. With last year’s celebration of New Year’s Eve, we let the world know that Sarajevo is a metropolis that can hold an outdoor event for one hundred thousand people without a single incident; a world-class event after which, within two hours, the city was clean and accessible again. In that way, we raise consciousness about Sarajevo as a tourist destination and brand. If we want to talk about tourism and increasing the number of tourists, we have to be persistent on that field. The indicators that the organisation of such events is one hundred per cent justified are reflected in simple parameters: the number of people who come to Sarajevo, the number of overnight stays, income from tourist tax, VAT and money spent here. The goal is to „upgrade“ from last year’s exceptional New Year’s celebration, if possible. The Tourism Association has come up with a rich three-day New Year’s program, which will be a gift for Sarajevans and guests of the city. Apart from the central event – the concert of Zdravko Čolić, and the concert of Crvena Jabuka (Red Apple), among other events, on the day before New Year, the Sarajevo Philharmonic will hold a welcome concert for guests and citizens of Sarajevo in front of the Eternal Flame. The money that will be spent during those festive days, will make the investments more than worthwhile.

Could you name some places where you felt best as a tourist? – I worked in the private sector for over ten years and due to the nature of my work, I travelled constantly, visiting many countries. I’m bound to Paris for business reasons, Konya for spiritual reasons, and Madrid for sports. However, I’m glad that I also got to know BiH thoroughly. I’ve visited all the small and big cities. Can you remember any events worth recounting from your trips? – There’s one that happened recently. It’s not about me personally, but it has to do with me as a citizen of Sarajevo, who loves his homeland. During passport control at the London airport, after the officer looked at my passport, she took ten minutes of her time to tell me that she had the best opinion of BiH, especially of Sarajevo, where her daughter had been last year. She had lost her bag, documents, everything she had with her, but just half an hour or an hour upon check-in, people from the bus station called her, located her in the city and brought all her belongings back to her. She told me that that wouldn’t happen in Britain. In conclusion, what do you think will be the highlight of the B&H capital in 2018? – We hope that the Sarajevan cable car will be finished in April and that it will restore the spirit of Sarajevo in a modern way. It will be a tourist attraction and refreshment for the citizens of Sarajevo. There’ll also be other smaller, but high-quality projects visible in the field of organising the city as a tourist destination. A „big boom“ in the following year could be the winter season in Sarajevo, which the Tourism Association of Sarajevo Canton can only promote in full capacity after this year.

We have what it takes for all types of tourism “BiH is one of the rare countries, and Sarajevo is one of the rare cities, which have potential in all spheres of tourism. Apart from cultural, historical and natural wealth, we have an excellent cuisine offering and ideal prerequisites for the development of mountain, i.e. winter tourism, which is already „awakening“ at Bjelašnica, as well as religious tourism. There are also realistic ideas about the development of health tourism, if we take into consideration that even from the time of the Illyrians and Romans, Ilidža was known as a famous healing spa, and taking into consideration that in many other fields of medicine, such as popular aesthetic surgery, we also have outstanding experts. Of course, for something like that, an attractive offering has to be made, which would be adequately promoted at all tourism fairs. The requirements for congress tourism are also being developed, as in recent times, just in the Sarajevo Canton area, two or three hotels with large congress halls have been built, and it's also impossible to imagine visiting the capital without seeing its Tunnel of Hope, which is part of the war route and war tourism. Each of these types of tourism need to be established and developed individually.”

Panoramske gondole bit će u bojama olimpijskih krugova i oslikavat će jedinstvo i multietničnost Sarajeva.

no rješenje problema smještaja jedne od najvrijednijih umjetničkih kolekcija u regionu.

The awakening of

SARAJEVO THE CITY ADMINISTRATION OF THE CITY OF SARAJEVO HAS IMPLEMENTED AND PARTICIPATED IN A NUMBER OF SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS, WHOSE AIM IS – A BETTER AND MORE BEAUTIFUL BH. CAPITAL CITY

E

veryone agrees in one matter - Sarajevo should definitely be visited! It is not difficult to understand why, if even the British newspaper Telegraph recommends to its readers Sarajevo and B&H as an attractive tourist destination; our capital city is also praised by the renowned American newspaper Huffington Post, placing Sarajevo in the second place among the ten most beautiful cities in the world, while the report of the most famous international portal CNN Travel highlights 11 unavoidable destinations in Sarajevo that delight every visitor.

Unity of Sarajevo Trebević cable car is one of the key post-war projects in Sarajevo that, in a symbolic way, restores the interrupted connection of the capital with the Olympic beauty. The construction of the cable car has returned the optimistic spirit and Sarajevo among the positive stories, but its full significance will be felt in the spring of 2018 when it will be officially put into operation. The Trebević cable car will consist of 33 modern gondolas, each with 10 seats, with a capacity of

1,200 passengers per hour, and the trip to Trebević will take only slightly more than seven minutes. Panoramic gondolas will be in the colours of the Olympic circles and will reflect the unity and multi-ethnicity of Sarajevo. As it was estimated that it will be used by half a million passengers per year, the City of Sarajevo has started developing a plan for the implementation of the accompanying contents on Trebević. The project of marking the hiking trail from the very center of the city (Inat house) to Trebević was launched, and the conceptual design of the mini ski resort was made. The City of Sarajevo has recently also launched a project of the Olympic Museum building’s restoration. This building, which the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of B&H put onto the list of protected buildings in 2009, is a symbol of the city that brings back memories of the 1984 Winter Olympics. So far, two phases of restoration have been done. Currently, preparatory works are being carried out in the form of making project documentation for the final phase of 59

reconstruction of this facility. City of Sarajevo has undertaken all measures to ensure that the museum opens before the European Youth Olympic Festival - EYOF 2019, organised by Sarajevo and East Sarajevo. Preparations for the Youth Olympics in 2019 are ongoing in the planned dynamics, as was confirmed by the members of the Coordination Commission of the European Olympic Committee, words that “they are leaving Sarajevo satisfied for the first time with the work that has been done so far!”

Everything matters During the mandate of the new city administration Sarajevo could also join the capital cities that have Museum of Contemporary Art. A legal procedure was initiated to establish a public institution ARS AEVI, which should provide a permanent solution to the problem of accommodation of one of the most valuable art collections in the region. After a very successful retrospective exhibition of Mersad Berber in the City Hall, seen by more than 20,000 citizens and tourists, a museum will be founded in the center of Sarajevo next year in honour of this great bh. artist. The cultural life of Sarajevo and its tourist offer have been enhanced by numerous cultural events, such as the Culture Day of Iran, the Culture Day of Istanbul, the First Austrian Ball while the legendary band Plavi

orkestar held a concert within the 23. Sarajevo Film Festival, also supported by the City of Sarajevo. By organising for the first time a three-day open-air spectacle, the City of Sarajevo will be the New year’s center of the region and one of the most desirable destinations in Europe this year. The outdoor event will last for three days, and will begin with the performance of young virtuosos Muzikart on December 30th. On New Year’s Eve, the biggest regional star Zdravko Čolić will perform at the Square of B&H, while the third night of celebration will be special becauase of the performance of the band Crvena jabuka in front of the Eternal Fire. Open-air concerts will be accompanied by a series of traditional events, such as Sarajevo Holiday Market, which will further enhance the festive atmosphere. There are many activities that the City of Sarajevo has launched, headed by the youngest Mayor of Sarajevo so far - Abdulah Skaka, also the first mayor of Sarajevo who visited the Pope in the Vatican. The sport has also been given a significant consideration, so the City of Sarajevo participated in the financing of the reconstruction of the southern area of the Grbavica stadium. The first night race and the by now a traditional Sarajevo Half Marathon are a continuation of good practice and cooperation between the City of Sarajevo and

the Marathon Association. The City of Sarajevo has gone a step further by intensifying activities in the field of international cooperation. Official visits to Belgrade, Vienna, Ankara, Istanbul, Ljubljana and Skopje were made for the purpose of arranging projects in the fields of culture, tourism, youth and science, while the City of Sarajevo hosted visits from the leaders of the Central Administrative District of the City of Moscow and longtime friends from Konya, Friedrichshafen and Dubrovnik . At the Mayor Forum in Podgorica, Mayor Skaka met with the mayor of Beijing with whom he discussed the strengthening of economic cooperation, especially in the field of tourism, while with the mayor of Budapest he agreed to hold the Days of Sarajevo in the Hungarian capital. Thus, to Sarajevo, whose doors are opened to everyone, new doors will also be opened in the future. The city wants to make its hospitality even more generous by sending messages to visitors at different locations. For this purpose, new welcome boards were installed on the main roads at the entrances to the city. The project was initiated and financed by the City of Sarajevo with the aim of improving the city’s tourist signalisation.

NEW CONCEPT OF PRESENTATION With the arrival of the new city administration, the City Hall began to offer its visitors a new concept of presentation of the best from Sarajevo. Starting from Contemporary rooms, they can continue their tour of this top tourist attraction of our city, viewing the setting of the Bosnian room and the photographic reconstruction of the Trebević cable car, while in the room of the City Council they will be able to see exhibits on display that testify to the existence of the City Administration and Council through different periods. The Room 25th November will also attract attention, as will the Franz Ferdinand Room. 60

Stanovnike i goste bh. prijestolnice očekuju tri dana novogodišnjih zbivanja.

of the New Year by offering a rich and resplendent program in the BiH capital – Sarajevo and claim the title of the heart of the Balkans. They succeeded in maintaining the quality of music performances. Last year, Dino Merlin performed, and this year, another Sarajevan with a long and successful music career – Zdravko Čolić – will celebrate the arrival of 2018 with Sarajevans and city guests. He expressed his gratitude for being selected to perform on the main stage.

To nisu solistički koncerti.

Svi očekuju noć raskošne energije, velikih emocija i toplih zagrljaja u veseloj zimskoj noći čijim će se nebom prolamati, osim urnebesnog vatrometa, i glasovi raspjevanih ljudi. Zato neka vam bude sretna Nova godina!

ast year’s central festive event, resembling a mega spectacle, which brought together more than one hundred thousand people at the BiH Square, showed us just how popular New Year’s Eve celebration in Sarajevo is with people. The craziest night of the year went by with overwhelmingly positive media coverage and a lot of praise.

THREE DAY CELEBRATION Sarajevo is preparing to mark the beginning of 2018 in the same the rhythm. Even though the Eternal Flame was supposed to be the venue of the New Year’s Eve celebration, the plans changed since this is a large-scale public event. It will take place at the Sarajevo City Centre square instead. Residents and guests of the BiH capital can spend three days celebrating the coming of the New Year. The Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing on December 30th, whereas Crvena jabuka will be performing after the central New Year’s Eve party on January 1st. In designing the program, the Organization Committee of the City of Sarajevo, the Tourism Community of the Sarajevo Canton and city municipalities had a common goal: to mark the end of the old and the beginning

“Sarajevo is my city, and regardless of any other options and offers, I belong here and it is with great pleasure that I accept to be involved in this year’s grandiose New Year’s Eve celebration,” Zdravko Čolić said at a press conference held in the City Hall. He added that, for him, Sarajevo was a special, emotional story that has nothing to do with money. “Performing at New Year’s Eve event is special. It’s not a solo concert. New Year’s Eve is a joy that should belong to all of us.”

NIGHT TO REMEMBER For Zdravko Čolić, 2017 was a year of wonderful performances and big concerts, but the highlight of the year will be the unforgettable concert on December 31st – Čola and countless visitors will sing and dance their way into the New Year. Tour agents have reported that Čola is the reason why the interest in celebrating the coming of the New Year’s Eve abroad has dropped compared with the same period last year. People expect the festive winter night to be filled with lots of positive energy, great emotion and warm hugs. They will watch fireworks light up the sky as they sing along to Čola. Out with the old, in with the new: may you be happy the whole year through. 63

Mjesto na kojem

je zima ljepša SARAJEVO HOLIDAY MARKET ODVIJA SE U NIKAD LJEPŠEM I BOGATIJEM IZDANJU

N

ajveseliji i najveći praznični događaj u Sarajevu nudi svim generacijama niz zanimljivih sadržaja protičući uz redovne zabavne programe – koncerte, nastupe DJ-eva, te izvlačenje nagradnih igara.

Sajamski dio donosi ponudu preko 50 izlagača – zanatlija i proizvođača rukotvorina, fan shopova sarajevskih sportskih klubova, domaćih proizvođača hrane i pića.

A Place Where

Winter is Magical THIS YEAR’S SARAJEVO HOLIDAY MARKET BRINGS YOU THE BEST PROGRAM AND THE MOST WONDERFUL EVENT TO DATE

T

he largest and most festive holiday event in Sarajevo offers everyone tons of things to do in addition to the regular entertainment programs – concerts, DJ performances, and prize drawings. The bazaar section at the market brings in over 50 vendors that include craftsmen and artisans with hand-made products, local food and beverage producers, and fan shops that cater to Sarajevo sports club fanatics. Next to the bazaar, there is Gastro Corner where Sarajevo Holiday Market’s visitors can refresh themselves with a wide assortment of drinks provided by our sponsors, along with delicious food prepared by chefs from the GastroID Center for Catering and Tourism Sector Development.

Youngsters can enjoy themselves in the playroom or at the amusement park that offers small cars, a carousel, a train and rollercoaster. Or they can visit ponies at the Pony Ranch. Santa Claus’ Village has never been as beautiful as it is now, and this year it comprises a souvenir shop, a Sweet House and Santa Claus’ House. Children will be welcomed by Santa Claus and his friends, an elf and a photographer. The ice rink covers approximately 400 square meters and will be open for skating for 2KM during the month of December. From January through February 11th, pupils and students attending primary and secondary schools in Sarajevo will be able to skate for free during certain periods.

The jolliest place this year is the Winter Pub, a catering establishment set up under a tent, where a wide variety of programs will be available during the 39day Sarajevo Holiday Market. Starting at 4 pm, visitors can have fun at After Work Parties, or attend evening concerts at 9 pm onwards. 65

M

U njegovom dnu pažnju plijeni i mala fontana, a iza nje još jedna vrata starinskog tipa. Derviši i ljudi naklonjeni sufizmu u ovoj sobi ispunjenoj mirom i zastrtoj ćilimima, s izgrađenim mihrabom – mjestom na kojem stoji predvodnik molitve, zajedno slave Boga i razgovaraju o njemu.

EACH PART OF THE BOSNIAN-HERZEGOVINIAN PAST HAS ITS MONUMENTS, WHICH ARE OF EXCEPTIONAL VALUE AND SIGNIFICANCE. WHEN VISITING THESE PLACES, A PERSON JUST WISHES THAT THEY HAD LEARNED A LOT MORE ABOUT THE ANCIENT TIMES AND THE PEOPLE WHO BUILT AND SHAPED THEM WITH THEIR BELIEFS Written by: Elma ZEĆO

I

t may not be mentioned as much as other magical buildings of Gazi Husrev Bey's endowment, but Hanikah, initially a dervish tekke of the Halveti order, is a very unique monument where the energies of glorifying God, connecting with the final Reality, teaching and artistic creation have intertwined through the centuries. It is no wonder that it still attracts Sufis today, even though its general purpose has been changed, and it also attracts the attention of renowned educational institutions and artists who organise their promotions and exhibitions here. 78

THE SPIRIT OF SUFI THOUGHT Hanikah, which can be translated as the gathering place of dervishes, seems simple. That is where its beauty lies, is what admirers of practical architectural solutions which are enriched with creative ideas, would think. It was built by Dubrovnik-based masters. On the outside, carved stone dominates, the windows with rounded upper edges decorate the walls like artwork, while a few stairs lead to the tall wooden entrance door, offering a view of the spacious

central part of the building with a glass roof. If you arrive at a time when there is an organised event, you will see artworks exhibited on all sides. They spread out across the elongated lobby surrounded by thin columns, which are over three metres tall and connected by wonderful arches and other rooms. At its bottom, you will notice a small fountain, and behind it another antique-style door. Hanikah is often abuzz with visitors who are attracted by the boldness and creativity of renowned authors. On the left side of the entrance, when you enter the sheltered part, the doors of the semahana are hidden, a room where the Sufi ceremony of dhikr is held. This is, when it comes to its original purpose, the only place which has remained in the spirit of the old times of Hanikah, which was opened in 1531 by Gazi Husrev Bey. The Sanjak Bey of the Sanjak of Bosnia had a large fortune at his disposal due to his family inheritance, as well as property he received as a gift for his military successes and the courage he showed. Born in Bosnia, his father was also the Sanjak Bey in the region of Aegean Macedonia, while he was connected through his mother, the daughter of Sultan Bayezid II, to the Ottoman sultan family. All this income enabled him to build a valuable waqf (endowment) located at Baščaršija, where he named a freed slave, Duke Murat, as the head person. As he himself was a follower of Sufism, he opted for the Hanikah Halveti order, which at that time was mostly joined by intellectuals, members of the ulema, and it was also favoured by sultans and other statesmen. Hanikah, as per the direction of Gazi Husrev Bey, could only be attended by people who were respected in society for their good behaviour. When the last

HANIKAH THROUGH TIME A little over two centuries later, in 1779 to be precise, the concept of Hanikah was changed, as it became Gazi Husrev Bey's Hanikah Madrasa, which stopped operating in 1921, as it was consolidated with Gazi Husrev Bey's Madrasa, which is in existence today and represents an exceptional high-quality higher education institution in Sarajevo.

As agreed with the heads of Gazi Husrev Bey's waqf, it was then also concluded that the function of this place would be two-fold: secular and spiritual. As its appearance reminds of gallery spaces, it became a gathering place for art admirers and exhibitors of diverse creative works, intellectual social events, for marking significant historical dates of Islam, while importantly, it still partially kept its indestructible Sufi cosmos. This is where the charm of Hanikah lies, where the practices of mysticism, the mind and art flow together.

At Hanikah and Hanikah Madrasa, dervishes, pupils, sheikhs and teachers would copy works in various fields in Arabic, Turkish and Persian, of which many have been preserved until today. However, it was difficult to preserve the initial appearance of Hanikah. Fires and earthquakes did not spare it through time, and with renovations came architectural modifications, meaning that the numerous traces of the artistic concept of the original building were lost. Although there were individual tendencies and desires for Hanikah to be architecturally restored to its original appearance, this was never done. The last, thorough restauration of Hanikah was done in 2000, led by architect Nedžad Kurto. 79

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Visoko Kraljevski grad

Izgled grada dobija nove arhitektonske obrise dolaskom Austro-Ugara.

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Visoko The Royal Town Small place with a great history IN THE CENTRAL PART OF BIH, A SMALL TOWN WAS FORMED THROUGHOUT THE CENTURIES, WHERE DIVERSE HISTORICAL EPOCHS HAVE INTERWOVEN INTO ITS BIOGRAPHY, SHAPING ITS CHARACTER IN THE SPIRIT OF THE COUNTRY IT BELONGS TO.

TIMELESS PLACE Situated at the mouth of the Fojnica River, tributary of Bosna River, life in Visoko has not ceased since the New Stone Age, probably due to the abundance of water, and the wealth of flora and fauna. In the vicinity of the town, many sites from the prehistoric and Roman era have been found, while the entire Visoko 82

region is full of traces from the Middle Ages. Strong and courageous people have planted their roots here, at one time namely the Illyrian tribe of Daesitiates. Not even the Romans managed to conquer it easily. Their uprising took four years to stifle – they were victorious in the end, but with great losses.

Visoko is an unavoidable place in the thousand-year tradition of Bosnia. The town of Visoki was fortified in the 12th century with a royal residence on a hill and with a sub-town in the foothill called Podvisoki, recording itself in history as a reigning place of five Bosnian rulers, and they were: Kulin Ban, Ban Stjepan II Kotromanić, Ban and King Tvrtko I, King Ostoja and King Tvrtko II Tvrtković. The remains of one of our most historically significant churches are still visible – Kraljevska crkva (Royal church), built in Mile (Arnautovići), where the state assembly for the entire Bosnia of that time was held, King Tvrtko was also crowned there, and national and other documents were kept at the church. At the Kraljevska crkva and around it, over a hundred graves were discovered, including the graves of King Tvrtko I and Ban Stjepan Kotromanić, while under the stećak (medieval tombstone) of Sports in nature The area around Visoko provides good conditions for mountain biking, and the trails surrounded by greenery are also excellent for recreational running.

of Ottoman reign in Visoko, a water system and numerous places of worship were built, and crafts and trade were developed. The appearance of the town gained new architectural contours with the arrival of the Austro-Hungarians. Among the first buildings to be built was the railway station in 1882, and during the time of the Austro-Hungarian governance, the building of Visoko Municipality was also built. Since the ancient times, Visoko has been a real region for the crafts, while during the period of former Yugoslavia, after World War II, it became a place for the development of the leather, textile, construction, metal and food industry. King Tvrtko I, his cloak with a coat of arms embroidered with gold wire was found. Only when Bosnia was in direct danger from the Ottomans did Bosnian kings abandon their regiments in Visoko and its surroundings, usually staying in safer Kreševo and in Jajce. The founder of Visoko, which was in the process of formation since the Ottoman Empire in this region, is the Bosnian Sanjak Bey Ajas Bey, and he himself, it is presumed, was originally from the Visoko region. He had his endowments in Visoko; one of them was a hammam, and around it, the first buildings were erected after the arrival of the Ottomans. A čaršija (bazaar) began to be formed with a sebilj (wooden fountain) in the middle, developing further along the left bank of the Fojnica River towards its mouth into the Bosna River. During the time

VISOKO PYRAMIDS However, this town took the spotlight after Semir Osmanagić, an independent explorer and connoisseur of ancient cultures, declared that the Visočica hill – right above Visoko, at the peak of which the medieval royal town used to be located – was actually a pyramid. Visočica's shape reminded him of pyramids that he had visited in South America, so he called it the Pyramid of the Sun, based on the Huaca del Sol pyramid in Teotihuacan. Apart from that one, the existence of two more pyramids is mentioned – that of the Moon and Dragon. As one of the arguments for the existence of pyramids in Visoko, it is stated that these two elevations, along with Visočica, form an equilateral triangle and that all three structures have clearly shaped sides with a flat plateau at the top. According to Osmanagić's theory, Visočica is a colossal stone pyramid with walls built out of stone blocks of breccia, and it was laid out so that each new row towards the top was moved, which creates the stair-like appearance of the construction. It is estimated to be over 200 metres tall, which

would, if confirmed, mean that it is larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza, and that it is over three millenniums old. Research regarding all this is still ongoing. It is clear that Visoko has a diverse tourist offering. What contributes to this is its colourful religious structure, which creates an architectural wealth of sacral buildings, where the following structures stand out: Franciscan monastery with a gymnasium and chapel, Tabhanska džamija (Mosque) and Bijela džamija (White Mosque), and the Orthodox Church of St. Prokopije. In addition to all of its sights, along with its surroundings, Visoko also offers lush greenery, clear and fresh air, numerous springs and streams, an abundance of forest fruits and medicinal herbs, providing a wonderful sanctuary from the hurried tempo of modern life. Mountain lodges & huts For those who spend their time in nature there are two mountain lodges at their disposal – Zbilje, right above Fojnica River, and Gorani, where there is suitable terrain for skiing, and the following mountain huts also stand out: Stakleni grad (Glass City), which is located in the deciduous forest under the peak of the Krtnica Hill, with a wonderful view of Trebević, Romanija, Bjelašnica, Jahorina, Vranica, Vlašić and Čemerska Mountain, and Gorica mountain hut, above the village of Srhinje on the Gorica Hill, with a view of Vlašić and Vranica. 83

kamene kugle PRILIKOM DODIRA, DOLAZI DO MIJENJANJA ENERGETSKOG POLJA I KUGLE I ČOVJEKA, KOJE POSTAJE SVJETLIJE I VEĆE, TE SE ŠIRI LJUDSKA AURA Piše: Elma ZEĆO

R

spheres on the bioenergetic field of visitors, a conclusion was made that in the case of interaction between a person and stone sphere, there was a change in the energy field of both the sphere and the person, becoming lighter and larger. Also, human aura would spread upon touching the sphere.”

SKILLED ANCIENT BUILDERS The „Archaeological Park: Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun Foundation“ conducted physical and chemical analyses of samples of four damaged stone spheres from Zavidovići, as well as of nearby rock material.

S

tone spheres are a rare occurrence in the world. Along with Costa Rica and Mexico, Bosnia and Herzegovina is on the list of countries where they have been found, in eleven different locations of Zavidovići Municipality, where over 50 stone spheres have been discovered.

AN UNFORGETTABLE STORM A locality with over 20 spheres – the village of Grab-Mećevići stands out, as the largest site in Europe – two kilometres from Zavidovići, while in the location of Podubravlje there is only one, but it is the most

massive stone sphere in the world: its radius is between 1.20 to 1.50 metres, and it is assumed to weigh around 35 tons. According to one of the older locals, the stone spheres in Duboki Potok (Deep Stream) were formed as a result of a huge and unforgettable storm, which occurred back in 1933. “Stone spheres started getting more serious attention in 2006”, says Sanda Berberkić, associate from the Tourism Association of Zenica-Doboj Canton. “After research was conducted by a few radiesthesists, who measured the effect of the energy of the stone

“That's when we became aware that stone spheres contain manganese, which is today used to improve sturdiness, as well as calcium oxide, which is the basis of binding material. It would seem that ancient builders would use the technology of melting natural rock material, then add some additives and binding material to improve the properties. The result were sturdy and perfectly spherical spheres.” The “Stone Spheres” association from this town, as well as the above-mentioned foundation look after the stone spheres in Zavidovići. The sites are very popular, with a constant growth in the number of visitors, especially foreigners.

SARAJEVO - BUDUĆE ODREDIŠTE KONGRESNOG TURIZMA

86

K

Osim postojanja velikih hotela, čiji koncept podržava organizaciju velikih kongresa i susreta poslovnih ljudi, prirodna, kulturna i historijska platforma također su neizostavne sfere kongresnog turizma.

menadžerica u velikim korporacijama i hotelijerstvu. “Radila sam, osim u BiH, također u Libiji i Dubaiju, međutim, korporativni metod rada me nije ispunjavao zbog svoje suštine.

Netlle

from the Wall

TRADITIONALLY MADE MEALS ARE SERVED WITH LOVE YOU CAN ONLY GET TO FEEL AT YOUR MOTHER’S DINING TABLE Written by: Elma ZEĆO

B

ehind the Sarajevo’s Markale market, a restaurant was opened three years ago. Even at the beginning, its culinary offer stood out from the dominant menus in other restaurants in Sarajevo. Its very name – Žara iz duvara (Nettle from the Wall) – suggests

that, even though this is atypical, nettle plays an important role in determining the restaurant’s identity and it is an ingredient of a whole range of tasty dishes.

Follow your Dreams All credit goes to Sabina Osmanović (35), a Sarajevan whose creative energy and great desire to have a new beginning put in motion a volcano of daydreams about a potential private business. She was in no need of a job. Considering her age, she was a successful and dedicated brand and marketing manager in large corporations and in the hotel business.

92

But, there was a moment when she realized that that was not what her heart was set on. “Apart from BiH, I worked in Libya and Dubai, but the corporate work method was not fulfilling because it is what it is. I felt it was time to take another road,” Sabina starts telling her story and goes on to say: “I always loved the culinary arts and I was enchanted by the 24 Kitchen channel. At the time, I started to hike and discover the diversity of medicinal plants, and I started to become more and more intrigued by it. I was driven by a desire to change, although I was somehow under the impression that it was difficult to make a turn in your thirties. I believe my perception began to shift when I heard a fascinating story with a positive message from one of my colleagues of a success-

ful broker who decided to change his profession after a severe traffic accident and become one of the most renowned chefs in the world.” So, Sabina decided to take a step forward. “My intentions were modest – I wanted to make klepe and knedle (traditional Bosnian dumplings filled with minced meet or cheese and potato-dough dumplings) to go. On the way of making this happen, my ideas grew, and I gained new knowledge. When I was a child, I was inspired by my mom’s cuisine. She would cook everything for us lovingly. We felt love everywhere, including the food she cooked and served us. We would joke around saying that we should open our own family restaurant. I did not have any cooking experience, but love motivated me to start something new. I believe one can succeed if one genuinely wants something. It all happened intuitively, but my dream came true by reminding me of The Alchemist and the story of a personal legend.”

Nettle – A Miraculous Plant While she was still hiking, Sabina started to explore nettle, and she decided to include it in her ingredients because of its health benefits. A French documentary called the Miraculous Nettle also made a huge impression on her at the time; it featured the struggle of the French farmers to have the right to use nettle.

“Even though it is widely used, nettle is undervalued and people think of it as weed, which is not fair. In essence, it is one of nature’s best gifts, and I wanted to point this out in my work. One cannot make a revolution in other people’s minds, but one can make a symbolic contribution.” In the Žara iz duvara restaurant, where the last name in the title means a wall encompassing a property, and žara (nettle) often grows and symbolizes the indestructible power of nature, traditional cuisine is dominant, even if it is increasingly being neglected due to the fast life style. However, along with the traditionally made meals, you are also served love and attention that you can only find at your mother’s dining table. The menu consists of different combinations of dishes made with or of nettle, such as: millet and nettle broth, nettle pesto with rice ravioli and cottage cheese, nettle fritters, bread made of integral flour and nettle, traditional Bosnian nettle pie (uljevak), and nettle jam, and crepes you can fill with nettle jam. In Žara iz duvara there are other culinary surprises and tasty homemade drinks made of various fruits and medicinal herbs such as milfoil, thyme and marjoram.

Žara iz duvara has an excellent reputation of serving good quality food, mainly among foreigners, but the fame of this restaurant has spread on the local market too attracting, among others, families to get together over lunch. As there was live music at Žara three times a week, a New York Times journalist happened to be there one evening, and later on he ended up mentioning the restaurant in one of his stories.

“I never thought that anything like this could happen. You start with klepe and knedle to go, and the next thing you know, a highly acclaimed magazine mentions you,” Sabina says jokingly, convincing evidence which shows that where there is a strong will there is a way. 93

ALMIR IBRIĆ, KINOLOŠKI SUDIJA

TORNJAK naš plemeniti pas “DOBRO FUNKCIONIŠU UZ LJUDE KAO I U ČOPORU PASA.

“Uzgoj pasa nije jednostavan posao, traži dosta odricanja, a najviše novca i vremena.

On mora biti jasan i čvrste ruke, nikako agresivne.”

“The Tornjak is more than a family pet, his nobleness and connectedness with his family are why they're a part of us. We're not even aware of what kind of breed we have inherited”, are the words of Almir Ibrić, dog show judge from Srebrenik, who has been breeding Tornjaks for four years.

HEALTHY DOGS “The main prerequisite for someone to be involved in cynology is that they love dogs!”, points out Almir, who 103

has been connected to the discipline since 2006. In this almost 12-year period, he has founded a cynological association in Srebrenik, registered a breeding kennel of Tornjaks called Miral Castle, organised a number of dog shows, and passed the exam to become a certified dog show judge in the category of breeds of FCI group II, section 2.2. “Dog breeding is not a simple job, it requires a lot of sacrifice, and mostly money and time. My goal is to breed healthy and anatomically fit dogs, following the current standard for this breed. For a good quality litter, you need good genetics, and the foundation of the breed is always the female. It would be wonderful and simple if the formula was: champion plus female champion resulting in little champions, however, breeding dogs requires canine knowledge, knowing the breed that you’re breeding, their pedigree, generally the generations of ancestors of your own dog, also a lot of effort and time for raising a litter and puppies, and luck”, explains Almir, who currently has 15 dogs at his breeding kennel, of which six are adult dogs and nine are puppies. “Tornjaks are guarded with strangers, a certain amount of sharpness can be felt, but certainly not aggression. They rule their territory, quickly notice changes and react strongly. The work well with people, as well as within a pack of dogs. It is just important that the rules of behaviour are very clear and well set. Within a pack, they function on the basis of confirming

their relationships and hierarchy on a daily basis, they can and will display dominance, and they sense human weaknesses very easily. The males love to dominate, maybe a bit more than any other dog breed, but the owner is the one that must know how to coordinate the rules in the right direction. The owner must be clear and strong, but not at all aggressive.”

NUMEROUS AWARDS Almir’s breeding kennel does not often get new additions, as he is not a commercial breeder, so he emphasises: “For me, breeding is a hobby and my dogs are members of my family.” He regularly goes to dog shows. He has participated in dog shows in Bucharest, Brussels, Brno, Budapest, Ljubljana, Celje, Belgrade, Zagreb, Umag, Zadar, Split, Mavrovo, and recently in Leipzig at the World Dog Show. “There have been countless titles and awards, however, some will be remembered as favourites. In 2016 in Zagreb, my Melany was declared to be the most beautiful female at a special show, where the judge was Danish expert Jorgen Hidnse. She has won seven championships so far in seven European countries. Her mother, Malou, who is the foundation of my breed, and the breed of my friend Lorena Kovačiček, was declared the young European champion of 2012, and that same year in Umag she was also declared the most beautiful

PROPER UPBRINGING “The Tornjak is not a dog for beginners. They are wonderful dogs, but this is when they’re in combination with owners who know how to properly raise them. Let’s not forget what this dog is for! Shepherds shaped them to fulfil their needs, in order to defend a flock from intruders. Therefore, before you decide to get a shepherd dog, talk to breeders and other owners, find out about their traits.” young dog among all breeds at an international show.” For Almir, each show has its own story. He has travelled many kilometres to show off our treasured breed, and the most important thing is that he enjoys his work. “Simply, it’s my way of life”, he concludes.

FAMILY – THE TORNJAK’S PACK AND FLOCK

CHILDREN AND TORNJAKS

“If you wish to have a Tornjak as a family pet, it’s important to bear in mind the vast expanses where their ancestors lived and the way of life that they led with flocks. Going grazing with a flock is replaced by everyday walks. A human family represents a pack for a Tornjak, and a flock and everything else that he can associate with his original function, although his breed-related instincts will not weaken.”

“In my experience, families with children are most interested in Tornjaks. The Tornjak has proved to be an excellent family member, and he loves, respects and protects his family. They get along with children really well.”

HALIL SEFER

VLAŠIĆKI PASTIR I

HALIL SEFER

THE VLAŠIĆ-BASED

SHEPHERD AND

HIS TORNJAKS THE ONLY SERIOUS TORNJAK BREEDER ON THIS MOUNTAIN Written by: Elma ZEĆO It's mid-summer in 2017. Halil Sefer has turned 40, and that is also how long his relationship with Tornjaks has lasted. He was born in the Bosnian village of Seferi, near Karaula, where sheep have been bred for as long as time. The fact that the Tornjak breed is closely

related to sheep, tells us Halil, can be seen from the very name of the breed, which contains the word tor, meaning sheepfold. “Despite the fact that Tornjaks can be used for various purposes, my dogs are at their original service – they exclusively guard sheep on Mount Vlašić, which is believed to be their place of origin, although people from other regions like to claim ownership. I own 15 adult dogs, who move freely with the flock, except when one of the females is in heat”, says Halil, who lives in the Vlašić region in a place called Gostilj.

terviewee, and continues: “When he sees an intruder, since he belongs to a group of dogs who are barkers, the Tornjak doesn’t immediately attack, but first barks sharply to chase away the intruder, and attacks only if necessary. The Tornjak is also a type of dog who loves children, he's not picky when it comes to food, he's very humble and resilient when it comes to climate changes, these are all his innate traits”, says Halil, who is known as the only serious Tornjak breeder on Vlašić. Surrounded by nature, together with his animals, he will continue to conquer its green fields, hills and valleys.

“If you want to teach a Tornjak to guard sheep, he needs to spend a year within a sheepfold in order to become a proud guardian. He can be so good at it that he's capable of replacing anyone. He can be a shepherd and a leader”, points out our in105

Zasigurno!

or most pet owners, especially of the meow and woof variety, these animals are so much more than best friends. That should not be surprising, as only those who have felt their love, full of only the purest emotions, have been able to recognise the joy that they bring into a person's life.

BLIND TIGER Anyone who has travelled throughout developed Western countries would have been able to see to what extent pets can participate in using services that are available publicly together with their owners, whether it be using public transport, sitting in numerous establishments, or going shopping while moving freely in a shopping centre. In BiH, there are also people who contribute to making positive changes. Among them is Bojan Prstojević, who decided to open a burger & cocktail bar called Blind Tiger last year, a real pet friendly place, offering the unique possibility of spending time with your pet.

This classic retro bar offering gourmet burgers, where the ingredients are made by the kitchen's chef, is located right at the beginning of Dalmatinska Street, in the centre of Sarajevo. If you are alone, you do not need a mobile phone here, because – thanks to its large glass surfaces – Blind Tiger offers a unique view of the life that goes on outside. When it comes to pets, this place is usually frequented by owners who come with their groomed and well-behaved dogs, and, as it turns out, the pet friendly concept is favoured by all guests, regardless of their company. Moreover, a dog that arrives with his/her owner and who usually lies there peacefully by his/her chair, manages to bring a smile to each new guest's face with its positive energy. And it will make you smile, too. For sure! 107

SPRIJEČITI

I LIJEČITI

RAZLIKUJTE GRIPU I PREHLADU

LIJEČENJE GRIPE UKLJUČUJE MIROVANJE, NADOKNADU TEČNOSTI, TE UZIMANJE LIJEKOVA ZA SNIŽAVANJE TEMPERATURE I SMIRIVANJE KAŠLJA

G

Prevent

AND CURE Learn the difference between flu (influenza) and cold FLU TREATMENT INCLUDES BED REST, PLENTY OF FLUIDS, TAKING MEDICINES TO LOWER TEMPERATURE AND COUGH SUPPRESSANTS

Flu and cough are not the same, although most people are aware of that, they don’t know the difference. We give you a short overview of the most important differences between flu and cold symptoms and advice how to help yourself when you get a cold. Flu is tough, sometimes even fatal due to numerous complications. It can be caused by a virus or other secondary, bacterial infection which is a joint invasion of a virus and bacteria. Very often, complications occur in the respiratory system itself (ear infection, sinus infection and pneumonia) but other organ systems can be affected as well. Pneumonia is the most severe complication of influenza and a cause for many deadly outcomes from this disease. Antiviral medicines, if taken within 48 hours when the symptoms occurred, shorten duration of the disease and lower the severity of possible complications. When it comes to basic cold, it is good to know that, unlike flu which develops rapidly, it develops gradually. Temperature is medium or slightly high, muscle ache or headache is very rare and there is no feeling of fatigue of exhaustion. No cough or it is rather mild but nose is runny constantly. Cold complications are very rare. So, flu comes suddenly. It is followed with high temperature, strong headache and distinctive muscle ache. Dry, very unpleasant cough, fatigue and exhaustion are present. Complications are quite frequent. Flu treatment includes bed rest, plenty of fluids, taking medicines to lower temperature and cough suppressants. Since flu is caused by viruses, antibiotics are ineffective and they can cure only bacterial complications- ear infection, sinus infection and pneumonia.

MIGRENA ILI TEK

OBIČNA GLAVOBOLJA Krivi su geni, ali i hrana i navike PULSIRAJUĆI BOL U POLOVINI GLAVE, MUČNINA, POVRAĆANJE TE POVEĆANA OSJETLJIVOST NA SVJETLOST, ZVUKOVE I MIRISE NAJČEŠĆE SU NUSPOJAVE MIGRENE

J

Lavinu migrene mogu pokrenuti i crna čokolada, kafa, čaj, suho meso, riba, šljive, ananas, avokado, lješnjaci, kikiriki, bijeli luk, špinat, celer luk i cvekla.

MIGRAINE OR JUST

A SIMPLE HEADACHE

Genes are to be blamed but food and habits as well PULSING PAIN ON BOTH SIDES OF YOUR HEAD, NAUSEA, VOMITING, INCREASED SENSITIVITY TO LIGHT, SOUND AND SMELLS ARE MOST TYPICAL PRODROMES

H

as a headache limited your activities in the past three months for a day or more? Do you feel nausea or you vomit during a headache? Are you sensitive to light during a headache? If your answer is positive on two or more above questions, you have a migraine. It often develops due to specific food or habits, with people who skip meals, who are on diets and so on. Alcohol can cause a headache, smoking as well because nicotine narrows blood vessels which supply the brain. Various foods like spices, agrumes, aged cheeses, black wine, sea food and bananas, can trigger migraine. 112

Divide your meals into three main meals and two snacks so that the time between meals is no longer than four or six hours. Skipping meals triggers headaches so young women who omit breakfast have migraines. Migraines can also be triggered with dark chocolate, coffee, tea, dried meat and fish, plums, pineapple, avocado, hazelnuts and peanuts, onion, spinach, celery, beet. Headaches are classified into two groups; primary headaches include all types of migraines, tension-type headache or so-called cluster headache. Secondary headaches are the result of some pathological conditions inside a head, in blood vessels or as a

result of an illness. Pulsing pain in both sides of a head, nausea, vomiting and increasing sensitiveness to light, sound and smell are most typical prodromes. It is considered that a migraine develops as a consequence of hypersensitive brainstem, neurological disorders, and the causes are stress, lack of sleep, longer stay under lights glare, changes in the environment and hormonal changes in women.

Treatment Since migraines occur three times more often in women than in men, migraine is related to hormones. Migraine treatment should start with paracetamol or acetylsalicylic acid. If they don’t relieve the pain, continue with the medications from the group triptans. For migraine prevention, beta blockers, antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs, which are prescribed individually, are used.

Volim sve vježbe i tehnike.

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

R

amzija and Husein Dedić from Bihać are proud of their daughter Azra (23), who was born four years after their son. From an early age, their sweet girl, born with Down Syndrome, showed how persistent and determined she was, and above all how sweet-natured she was. Therefore, it's no wonder that everyone from Bihać knows of Azra. And they love her! Because she deserves it.

HARDWORKING YOUNG WOMAN Azra has an artistic soul. She loves painting, mostly nature. Because of her greatest love – sport – she has won the affection of people across her homeland, where people got to know her as the first person with Down Syndrome who exercised her right to work.

AZRA DEDIĆ, JUDOKA

Fearless

young woman from Bihać THE PASSING YEAR FOR AZRA HAS BEEN MARKED BY THE BRONZE MEDAL THAT SHE WON AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, AND SHE CONTINUES TO FOLLOW HER SPORTING DREAMS, WHERE GOING TO THE OLYMPIC GAMES IS THE BIGGEST ONE Written by: Elma ZEĆO 116

“I manage to do everything on time. I go to work, and I have been training three times per week at Judo club Una for ten years already. I love all the exercises and techniques. My parents were the ones who saw that I was talented at sports, and it was my decision to do judo”, says Azra, who has been to numerous competitions, however, one in particular has overshadowed all the rest – participating at the World Championship for judoka with an intellectual disability in Cologne, where she won a bronze medal. “The competition was very strong. There were competitors from Germany, Sweden, Austria...but I'm happy with my performance. It was great”, says Azra, who is thrilled by trips to international competitions, not just because of meeting with sportspeople, but because for her it's also an opportunity to get to know a new environment and its culture. “I've been to competitions in Kopar, Izola, Pordenone and Ravena. When I go on trips, I'm most interested

in the historical monuments”, says Azra, whose trips to competitions don't happen without her mum Ramzija, her loyal companion, who is full of excitement each time.

ROCKY ROAD TO THE STARS The path of the Dedić family, as can be assumed, was not simple, but they did everything in their power so that Azra could exercise her right to a normal life. “Azra was always an inspiration to me. When she was first born, I went through a crisis, facing something new and completely unknown in life, but this lasted a brief time for me. I came to my senses and decided to give her everything I could in life, so that she would achieve her maximum. It's the duty of every parent to provide their child with whatever is in their power. I saw that Azra was persistent, that she had a will, that she had a desire, and I gave it my all for her to succeed on that path”, says Ramzija, and adds: “Considering that the realm of vulnerable categories of the population is not systematically dealt with, the development of children with Down Syndrome depends on the involvement of their parents. Unfortunately, for most, time passes in the battle for existence, some don't have the courage, and others the knowledge about how to reach the goal.” It is well known that people with Down Syndrome are physically flexible, which Azra's parents soon realised. She could perform movements that most typical children would have to practise, such as the splits, and they wanted for her time after school to be constructive. By chance, they met the coach from Judo club Una, Fikret Bečić, who told them that their daughter was talented in this sport. That is how it all began.

“And that was the right move, ideal for inclusion. At the club everyone breathes as if they were one person. Even people from Western countries were surprised by the exceptional conditions. Many can learn about what real inclusion is from this club”, continues Ramzija, while Azra points out: “We do everything together. The coach doesn't differentiate and there are absolutely no privileges.”

SOURCE OF HAPPINESS FOR HER FAMILY Apart from in society in general, Azra is known as a reliable colleague in her workplace CM, where she has been working for a year. “Work is great for me. I have wonderful colleagues. I do my tasks: I stock the shelves, I put the discount prices on goods, help the customers with their purchases... I'm grateful to my boss, who gave me the opportunity to work, because now I feel valuable like everyone else”, says Azra happily, who is, at the same time, currently the only employed person in her family. Af-

ter sixteen years of working in their own store, her parents had to close it down. Therefore, they all hope that the near future will be better when it comes to that. And while they will memorise the passing year due to Azra's success at the World Championship, their darling continues to dream new sporting dreams for herself.

“I would like to go to the Olympic Games, and regardless of the difficulties that sportspeople have, I will strive to fulfil my dream. I want to tell all people to be persistent and follow their dreams”, are the words of Azra, without whom her mum cannot imagine life today. “Everything that I imagined would be hard when she was born ended up being the opposite. She's made so many great things happen and continues to do so... I wouldn't change her for anything in the world!”, concludes Ramzija emotively. 117
