YASSER SOROUR, ambasador Arapske Republike Egipat u BiH

Nova

turistička budućnost Egipta i BiH

OVE GODINE BIT ĆE OTVORENE REDOVNE AVIOLINIJE IZ SARAJEVA U HURGADU, TE PRVI PUT IZ BANJE LUKE U HURGADU. SARADNJA ZAPOČINJE S JEDNIM LETOM SEDMIČNO SA SVAKOG AERODROMA, A POSLIJE SU PLANIRANA PO DVA LETA. BOSANCI I HERCEGOVCI RADO PUTUJU U EGIPAT, A NOVE MOGUĆNOSTI ĆE DOPRINIJETI JOŠ ČEŠĆIM I BROJNIJIM POSJETAMA Razgovarala: Elma Zećo / Foto: Irfan Redžović

N

No, Yasser Sorour, ambasador Arapske Republike Egipat u Bosni i Hercegovini, u diplomatiji djeluje već 27 godina. U našoj zemlji njegovu porodicu i njega oduševljava toplina koju osjećaju u susretima s Bosancima i Hercegovcima.

U Mostaru smo bili nekoliko puta, Tuzli, Zenici, Bihaću, Banjoj Luci... Vidio sam krasne vodopade. Bog vas je blagoslovio s veličanstvenim prirodnim potencijalima. Tokom ove zime prvi put u životu sam pokušao skijati. Ni ostali članovi moje porodice nisu ranije skijali.

- Tokom svoje misije planiram posjetiti cijelu BiH. - Ramazan u Egiptu. - Ja sam direktan i transparentan čovjek. To su dvije vrijednosti koje veoma cijenim. Ako ste takvi, nikada nećete imati problema u životu.

is first diplomatic mission was to Islamabad, the second to Rome, and the third to New York. However, Yasser Sorour, the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been active in diplomacy for 27 years. Each country that he served in or visited for business added an invaluable experience to his life.

Because, nothing compares with how rewarding and fulfilling it feels like to build relationships with people, learn more about the society of a gorgeous country and various types of business activity they engage in, as well as to learn about different cultures and traditions. In our country, the ambassador and his family are delighted by the

kindness they feel when they get together with Bosnians and Herzegovinians. The ambassador wants to make an effort to learn the Bosnian language, because, in his opinion, speaking the same language as other helps you to get to know them better, to learn how they think, and to gain a better understanding of their culture and tradition. 19

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

OPENING UP NEW ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES

B&H and what did you make of it?

Your diplomatic mission to B&H began about a year and a half ago. What do you plan to accomplish here? - Like any other ambassador, first of all I want to improve the relations between our friendly countries. When it comes to culture, my idea was to facilitate contacts between people. One of our cultural activities is cooperation with the National and University Library of B&H in Sarajevo. In its reading room, we’re going to put on display books on Egyptian culture, and we’ve also planning to organise various events and screen Egyptian films. We’ve already made some improvements in tourism. Last summer we had 14 charter flights from Sarajevo to Hurghada, while this year we’re adding a new service between Sarajevo and Hurghada, and for the first time between Banjaluka and Hurghada. We’re going to start with one flight per week from each airport, and continue with two flights per week. I feel all those beautiful emotions that the people of B&H have for Egypt. Tourists who’ve already been in Egypt have had very positive experiences, and this has encouraged us to further explore the B&H market. The economy is certainly very important in our relations, we can achieve a lot in terms of trade, particularly with agricultural products. Our cooperation in the timber industry is quite good, but we’ll intensify it in the future, because we’ll be setting up a dedicated industrial park for furniture manufacturing in the Middle East. We’re making an analysis of the products B&H is importing and exporting so that we can bring together businessmen from the two countries. The ceramics, textile and clothing industry... there are many 20

THE 2023 NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION IN ASWAN “We’re creating a package tour that will fly people to Aswan for the New Year’s Eve celebration which is a place you can travel to in November and December. That means riverfront hotels, antiques everywhere you look, the Egyptian civilisation, and a unique tradition in Aswan and Luxor. We’re promoting these places in various ways and journalists and bloggers have stepped in to help” more products we can trade in. Based on the Continental Free Trade Agreement, and Egypt is among the countries that signed it, we can help B&H export its products to other African countries through Egypt. Given the fact that you started your mission during the pandemic, have you been able to travel much around

- My family and I complied with the measures, but we did visit several places in B&H. We’re in this region for the first time. We’ve been to Mostar several times. We’ve also been to Tuzla, Zenica, Bihać, Banja Luka... I saw magnificent waterfalls. God has blessed this country with enormous natural resources. This winter, I went skiing for the first time. My family has also never skied before. And here we’re been to several ski resorts and came to love this wonderful winter sport. When they saw the pictures, my friends and relatives in Egypt said they wanted to come here for a visit. If you open the door to a larger number of tourists, you should launch a campaign in the Middle East to promote winter tourism in B&H. The following elements are very important to tourists: green landscapes, waterfalls, food, friendly people, high-quality accommodation, and B&H has got it all. How do you usually describe Sarajevo? - Sarajevo is a really beautiful city and it could be the central place from which tourists, who like to explore different places, could travel throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are many popular places to visit in Egypt, but what are the ones you’d always recommend? - Based on the number of visas that were issued last year, I realised that 99% of tourists from B&H go to Hurghada. But Egypt is not just Hurghada. People should go to Luxor and Aswan, where 1/3 of the world’s antiquities is located and see the pyramids in Cairo. We’ve managed to slightly change the way people think, and this year we’re going to try to attract tourists with new pac-

kage tours. We’re creating a package tour that will fly people to Aswan for the New Year’s Eve celebration which is the best place in Egypt to travel to in November and December. That means riverfront hotels, antiques everywhere you look, the Egyptian civilisation, and a unique tradition in Aswan and Luxor. We’re promoting these places in various ways and journalists and bloggers have stepped in to help. We’re now promoting the Journey of the Holy Family. Each station the Holy Family stopped at over the course of their journey is well-preserved. A group of journalists from B&H recently visited the town of Saint Catherine in Sinai. It’s indeed quite an interesting place. We’d like you to see as much as possible. In cooperation with universities in B&H, we’re also trying to create affordable package tours for students. I believe that once we have regular flights in place the people of B&H will feel the need to travel to Egypt more. We’ve got everything we need to encourage as many tourists from B&H to visit many popular places in Egypt.

UNIQUE CHARM OF RAMADAN IN EGYPT Where do you personally like to travel? - During my mission, I plan to travel across the length and breadth of B&H. That’s my first goal, and then I plan to explore the region. Geographically speaking, from B&H you can go to all neighbouring countries by car. I plan to do just that, because I might not get another chance. How often do you go to Egypt? - Once a year, but I intend to split my holiday into two parts which will allow me to spend a number of days in B&H and explore as many places as possible.

“SARAJEVO IS A REALLY BEAUTIFUL CITY AND IT COULD BE THE CENTRAL PLACE FROM WHICH TOURISTS, WHO LIKE TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT PLACES, COULD TRAVEL THROUGHOUT BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA” Is there something about Egypt that you miss? - I miss Ramadan in Egypt. It’s just different there. People from other Arab countries, Muslim countries, enjoy spending Ramadan in Egypt. People go to the theatre, sit together in cafés, friends and family gather together... That’s the spirit of Egyptian Ramadan and the way we, Egyptians, Muslims or Christians,

celebrate wonderful Ramadan evenings together. People also go to mosques. Ramadan is a remarkable spiritual month. What are the values you’ve always followed? - I’m a straightforward and transparent man. And that’s what I really value about people. If you’re like that, you’ll never have problems in life. 21

TREĆI SVIJET

ŽIVOT balkanske kraljice Teute IAKO SE TREĆI SVIJET SADA KORISTI KAO POGRDNI IZRAZ, FRAZA JE, ZAPRAVO, STVORENA KAKO BI OPISALA NACIJE SVIJETA KOJE SU ODBILE SLIJEDITI NARACIJU O HLADNOM RATU, NE PRISTAJUĆI TAKO DA BUDU ZAVISNE I PODREĐENE DRŽAVE, ILI SOVJETSKOM SAVEZU NA ISTOKU, ILI SJEDINJENIM AMERIČKIM DRŽAVAMA NA ZAPADU. HISTORIJA DRŽAVA TREĆEG SVIJETA DALA IM JE SNAGU DA ODBIJU DA NJIMA UPRAVLJAJU VANJSKE SILE. HISTORIJA KOJA UKLJUČUJE NASLIJEĐE JAKIH ŽENA, ŽENA KOJE SU VLADALE I VODILE U VREMENIMA KADA ŽENE NISU BILE DOBRODOŠLE NA POZICIJAMA MOĆI. NEKE OD OVIH ŽENA SE DANAS PAMTE, ALI IMA MNOGO VIŠE PRIČA KOJE SU IZGUBLJENE U MAGLI HISTORIJE Piše: Anita Barjaktarević, Red Africa Travel

T

THIRD WORLD

THE LIFE of the

Balkan Queen Teuta ALTHOUGH THE THIRD WORLD IS USED NOW AS A DEROGATORY TERM, THE PHRASE WAS ACTUALLY COINED TO DESCRIBE THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD WHO REFUSED TO FOLLOW THE NARRATIVE OF THE COLD WAR; REFUSING TO BE SUBSERVIENT CLIENT STATES TO EITHER THE SOVIET UNION IN THE EAST OR THE UNITED STATES IN THE WEST. IT WAS THE HISTORY OF THESE THIRD WORLD NATIONS THAT GAVE THEM THE STRENGTH TO REFUSE TO BE GOVERNED BY OUTSIDE POWERS; A HISTORY THAT INCLUDES A LEGACY OF STRONG WOMEN, WOMEN WHO GOVERNED AND LED IN TIMES WHEN WOMEN WERE NOT WELCOME AT THE REINS OF POWER. A FEW OF THESE WOMEN ARE REMEMBERED TODAY, BUT THERE ARE EVEN MORE STORIES THAT HAVE BEEN LOST TO THE MIST OF HISTORY Written by: Anita Barjaktarević, Red Africa Travel

T

here were a few women who stood up to the might of the Roman Empire, but not many. The names Boudicca and Cleopatra are still well-known and are frequently mentioned in scholarly discourse. But 200 years before either of these women, a challenge to Rome arose in the Balkans led by an Illyrian ruler - Queen Teuta.

historic record about Teuta herself, the only accounts were written by Roman historians with a marked history of misogyny. There are legends that have survived however, and it is with these legends and the small nibbles of history available that we can reconstruct the life of this Balkan Queen.

Teuta found herself the Queen Regent for the infant Pinnes; Agron’s son, but not Teuta’s.

Nothing officially mentions Teuta’s birth, but all available evidence points to a woman who was born into the nobility. The fact that she took over the regency instead of the birth mother of Agron’s son indicates Teuta had a high social status. Legend has pinpointed her birth in the Herzegovinian city of Metković, but it isn’t until two Roman consuls visited her at her palace in Shkodra to demand an end to Illyrian piracy that we have concrete mentions of the Queen.

There is remarkably little in the

Teuta gave the Romans her word

HIGH SOCIAL STATUS Teuta was not a queen in her own right; her husband Agron was the king of the Ardiaei Tribe of the Illyrians. He died while leading a successful war to expand the Ardiaei territory, which stretched from central Albania to the Neretva River.

26

that no one officially connected to the Ardiaei government would attack any Roman vessels, but refused to dissuade private persons from continuing their attacks. Such a wishywashy response was too much for one of the consuls, who began shouting at Teuta in a fit of temper. Teuta’s temper flared - according to Roman reports, she had one consul murdered and the other imprisoned on their way home. The Romans were not known for their kindness to women, nor for a relationship that was close with the truth. They wanted bits of the Ardieae empire, and if that required a bit of equivocating, so be it. For her part, Teuta acted as though there were no threat coming her way from Rome. She continued besieging the island now known as Vis; as the historian Polybius wrote,

“As with a woman’s natural shortness of view, she could see nothing but the recent success and had no idea what was going on elsewhere.” The Roman attack, when it came in 229, took Teuta entirely by surprise. Not only did she not expect a Roman invasion, she was also unprepared for the betrayal of one of her closest advisors, Demetrius. Teuta ran as the Roman army began to spill into her domain; straight to her royal palace at what is now Risan in Montenegro. From there she made peace with the Romans, giving up much of the Ardiaei lands and paying a tribute. Later that year, she sent an envoy to Rome apologizing for actions taken under the reign of her husband, but not during her own time in power.

sites from Illyria’s antiquity that can be visited throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina today. Perhaps the most famous Illyrian ruins, Daorson near Stolac, consist of massive Cyclopean walls which are still standing although the city itself was deserted more than 2000 years ago. The views from Daorson, which has a commanding mountain-top position, are breathtaking and make it easy to see how much of Illyrian planning was based on defense.

TEUTA’S SUICIDE According to legend, Teuta threw herself from the cliffs at Risan - unable to cope with the loss of her kingdom. The Romans, who generally tended to act triumphant when enemies were brought low, made no mention of Teuta’s suicide. However, ten years after she lost the First Illyrian War, the very same Demetrius who betrayed her now turned against the Romans. In the writings of Cassius Dio, Teuta is listed as dead when Demetrius betrays the Romans, but no cause of death is given. Teuta is often associated with modern-day Albania, and a large chunk of her kingdom was in those present day borders. But Balkan borders are nebulous things, constantly changing, and Teuta’s kingdom stretched far further than one modern country. More than an Albanian Queen, she was a Balkan Queen. And even if we don’t have much evidence left of Teuta herself, there are still numerous

Less famous, but still incredibly important, is the underwater archeological site of Desilo in southern Herzegovina. In Hutovo Blato, Desilo was only discovered in 1972. In 2008, sixteen Illyrian ships (with amphora still on board) were discovered at the site as well. According to the site’s researchers, the ships were most likely sunk by Romans in retaliation for Illyrian piracy - a possible connection to the story of Queen Teuta. Further archeological work led to the discovery of what was most likely a settlement and trading post.

PERMANENT MONUMENTS Although Teuta’s Ardiaei lands stopped at the Neretva river, just a little further away in what is now Tomislavgrad are Illyrian burial mounds. As of 2015, more than 150 Illyrian burial mounds have been excavated in Albania, but no formal work has been done on the mounds near Tomislavgrad which can still be seen dotting the landscape. Some of the most enduring monuments to Illyria are in the Balkan people themselves. First, the language: the word Bosnia comes from an Illyrian word which means “water”. Research work on heritage woodworking designs shows a distinct Illyrian influence which has managed to trickle down for 2000 years. The winemaking tradition so important to Illyrian merchants (and evident on the sunken Illyrian ships) is still practiced today throughout the regions that were formerly Illyrian. The tradition of tattooing designs on the hands and arms of Catholic women in Central Bosnia also has Illyrian influence in the tattoo designs. And finally there is the spirit of stubborn defiance exhibited by Teuta still remarked upon, written about, and admired by those who witness Balkan people as they confront adversity.

MAJA ZELIHIĆ

Sarajevo nosim u srcu

DR. MAJA ZELIHIĆ PROGLAŠENA JE JEDNOM OD 100 INSPIRATIVNIH LIDERA NA SVIJETU ZA 2022. GODINU. PRIZNANJE NIJE DOŠLO PREKO NOĆI, JER JE RIJEČ O PROFESORICI S IMPOZANTNOM KARIJEROM U AMERICI. NA NIMALO LAGANOM PUTU POSEBAN VJETAR U LEĐA BIO JOJ JE POKOJNI DJED, KOJI JU JE KROZ ŽIVOT PRATIO KAO NEPRESUŠNI IZVOR INSPIRACIJE Razgovarala: Elma Zećo

S

MOJ PUT

Poput mnogih Bosanaca i Hercegovaca uslijed ratnih okolnosti odlazite u inostranstvo, u Ameriku, gdje ste izgradili zapaženu akademsku karijeru.

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

To počinje u roditeljskom domu.

I poslije toliko godina teško mi je izustiti pokojni, jer on živi u meni dok sam ja živa.

Naravno, i neka naša jela. Napravimo mi njih u Americi, ali nije to isto. Kako strancima opisujete Sarajevo?

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

As a girl growing up in Sarajevo, you were an avid reader. Your father, Branislav Crnogorac, a prominent Bosnian-Herzegovinian sports worker, mentioned it in one of his interviews. At what age did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up? - As children we dream a lot, but dreams change as we grow older. Some of the jobs that existed when I was growing up, in the 1970s and 1980s, no longer exist, and the things that we knew nothing about at the time are very common nowadays, such as online learning, which is something I’ve been dedicated to for years. Two big dreams related to my career have followed me through my life. As a little girl, I dreamed of being a TV announcer, and that was something beautiful girls were doing on TV at the time. I’d spend hours practicing. Later on, I developed a love of lecturing and interacting with audiences. I remember even more vividly that I wanted to work in a library. I read so much that my grandfather would argue with school library staff because they wouldn’t believe that I’d read a book if I returned it in 24 or 48 hours. I had a special library card for a library in the Hrasno neighborhood. It said that I could borrow several books per week without any questions asked (laughs). At the time, I wanted to either own a library or work in it. Children’s dreams, however, give some indication of the future—I’ve dealt with books and education my entire life. Like many Bosnians and Herzegovinians, you were forced to flee your home because of the war and go abroad, to the US, where you’ve built a successful academic career. What helped you the most on that path? - A strong educational background from B&H and the influence 32

of my family have helped me on the path that hasn’t been easy at all. My family believed that education was one of the pillars of a successful person. Education in B&H is of excellent quality. I was happy to point out in several interviews that the First Secondary Grammar School (Prva gimnazija in Sarajevo) can measure up to not only high schools but some of the colleges throughout the world as well when it comes to the quality of instructional materials and teachers. Another factor is genetics. My family is made up of very persistent people—when they set a goal for themselves, they don’t give up. My father was one of the most accomplished people in his field, and so was my grandfather. I’m also proud of the women in my family. We’re committed and we always do the best we can, whatever we do. How do you prepare students to step into a rapidly changing business world and become professionals who will last in their profession? - Primarily, we teach them to be adaptable, because the business world is changing at a dizzying pace. The desire to teach only the necessary skills

THE STORIES OF MY SOUL “I’ve always dealt with scientific papers, books about business, or chapters in scholarly books. I’d love to write a book that deals with some of my life experiences. A lot has accumulated in me, and I see a story in everything”

jeopardizes the basic purpose of education, originally set up to develop and nurture young minds while creating lifelong learners rather than self-centered and egocentric individuals focused on skills in their narrow fields of expertise. Given today’s environment of rapid technological change, a number of skills student need to have become obsolete by the time they graduate or within a short time. We make an effort to teach our students what they need for their future profession, and familiarize them with concepts that will help them in their work in the future, particularly when it comes to adapting to change.

FEMALE LEADERS You’re also in charge of the Forbes Center for Women’s Leadership. What’s the greatest barrier to achieving equal representati-

on of women across every sphere of human activity? - During the pandemic, particular attention was given to women leaders because they took systematic and well-executed steps to contain the spread of the coronavirus that worked. People have come to appreciate and understand the courageous empathy of women leaders as an important quality and a key strength of a leader. With a growing number of women leaders, the perception of female leadership, which must in some way mimic male leadership traits, has practically disappeared. There are still some industrial sectors where women aren’t leaders. Education must overcome all existing barriers. Many secondary schools are already doing this by encouraging change in the fields of science, math, technology, and engineering. How do we empower women to become leaders? - Women need mentors and other women leaders as role models who’ll inspire them rise to

great heights in life and become who they want to be. It begins in the parental home. Numerous research studies have examined the degree of influence of men on leadership in women’s lives. A woman will be empowered by her father, brother, grandfather… their support is essential. In such conditions, girls can successfully develop and grow into future leaders. Of course, there are exceptions, but their path is much more difficult. Who was the greatest motivator in your life and the wind at your back for everything you are today? - My family, the one I left in Bosnia as well as the one I have in the US. My children are the meaning of my life. My grandfather was the wind at my back. Many years have passed and yet I find it difficult to say my late grandfather, because he’ll live inside of me as long as I’m alive. He was my greatest motivator in the years when I was forming as a person, and he will forever be my inspiration to be the best I can be, his pride. Where do you see the greatest po-

tential for development in B&H? - Our greatest potential lies in our education and the competencies of our young people. An educated young person, man and woman, who’s eager for prosperity, development and innovation, is our strength.

COFFEE RITUAL You’ve lived in the US for a long time. Is there something about your homeland that you miss every day? - The coffee ritual with friends when we feel like it. I have no time for that kind of thing. While staying in Bosnia last summer, I was happy to have people drop by my place unannounced. We’d sit down and have a little chit-chat. I miss those seemingly ordinary but truly beautiful things. I certainly miss some of our dishes. We do cook them in the US, but it’s not the same. How do you describe Sarajevo to foreigners? - Not only do I describe Sarajevo, but I also bring colleagues from the US to Sarajevo. I carry Sarajevo in my heart. It’s a city with a unique cultural heritage, a city of multiculturalism, a city where 20 minutes is enough for you to explore several historical periods and enjoy diverse architectural styles, a city of delicious food, good music, and generous, caring people. Are there any challenges you haven’t tackled yet? - I’ve always dealt with scientific papers, books about business, or chapters in scholarly books. I’d love to write a book that deals with some of my life experiences. A lot has accumulated in me, and I see a story in everything. Perhaps one day, when I’m less busy, I’ll write a something for the delight of my own soul. 33

hroughout history, Sarajevo never turned its back on anyone who was in trouble. At the turn of the 15th century, having been expelled from their homes in Spain and Portugal, the first Sephardic Jews came to Sarajevo, while Ashkenazi Jews from Central Europe arrived with the Austro-Hungarians in the 19th century. At some point, due to the coexistence of Islam, Christianity and Judaism, structure-wise, Sarajevo turned into a colorful mosaic, which would become its main feature. You can see its wonderful places of worship just by taking a stroll down the streets in the city center where iconic structures of Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Islam and Judaism are located.

KATEDRALA SRCA ISUSOVA

SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL

Katedrala Srca Isusova, stolna (glavna) je crkva Vrhbosanske nadbiskupije. Sagrađena je u neogotičkom stilu 1889. godine. U pročelju katedrale nalaze se dva zvonika, visoka 43,2 metra. Unutar zapadnog zvonika je zvono teško 2,5 tone, a u istočnom pet manjih zvona. Iznad glavnog ulaza ističe se luk i bogato dekorisana rozeta s dekorativnim staklenim vitražom, a u sklopu donjeg dijela rozete nalazi se kip Srca Isusova.

Built in the neo-Gothic style in 1889, Katedrala Srca Isusova is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vrhbosna. Two 43.2-meter-high bell towers are located on the front façade. The bell in the west bell tower weighs 2.5 tons, whereas the east tower contains five smaller bells. Above the main entrance to the cathedral, there is a prominent arch and a richly decorated rosette with stained glass, while a statue of Jesus is placed at the bottom of the rosette.

Josip Štadler, Archbishop of Vrhbosna from the early 20th century, who initiated the construction of Katedrala Srca Isusova, was buried in it. Next to the entrance to the cathedral, there is a monument dedicated to the former head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope John Paul II, who visited Sarajevo in 1997.

JEWISH MUSEUM Exiled from Spain, Sephardi Jews obtained permission from the sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent, to settle in Sarajevo. In 1581, the Rumelian beylerbey Sijavush Pasha built a han (inn) for Sephardi Jews in the Great Courtyard, and later on, a synagogue was built there as well, where today’s Muzej Jevreja is located, testifying of the turbulent history and sad fate of the Jewish people in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The readers of renowned magazine “The Jewish Daily Forward” have rated Muzej Jevreja in Sarajevo as the first place out of ten biggest Jewish destinations across the world that need to be visited. The visitors of the museum can see the Silver Breastplate or the Torah Shield, announcing the upcoming holidays, which is the most valuable and oldest exhibit of the museum, as well as copy of the Sarajevo Haggadah, a book that was created in Spain in the 14th century and which arrived across Italy and Dubrovnik to Sarajevo. The second gallery, which is the saddest part of the museum, shows the suffering of Jews during World War II. On the ceiling, the “Book of Suffering” hangs with the 12000 names of the Jews who were killed, and visitors can also see a wall with the names of B&H citizens, who would save Jews during World War II. 37

STARA PRAVOSLAVNA CRKVA I MUZEJ IKONA

OLD ORTHODOX CHURCH AND MUSEUM OF ICONS

Stara Pravoslavna Crkva in Sarajevo, the Crkva svetih arhangela Mihaila i Gavrila (Church of Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel), is one of the oldest and most valuable cultural and historical monuments of Sarajevo. It was first mentioned in 1539, but it is assumed to have been constructed on the foundations of another older church. It was built in the style of medieval Serbian and Byzantine buildings, and its interior is very famous because of the exceptional woodcarving and icons. The bell tower was later added in 1883, and it was reconstructed in 1960, when it got its current appearance. Alongside the church, there is Muzej Ikona (Museum of Icons) (paintings on wood, canvas or stone with images of Jesus Christ, the Holy Mother or other motifs from the Holy Scripture) with a valuable collection from the 18th and 19th century, numerous manuscripts and some of the prettiest old Orthodox paintings in Southeastern Europe.

BAŠČARŠIJA MOSQUE Džamija Havadže Duraka (Havadža Durak Mosque), better known as Baščaršijska Džamija (Baščaršija Mosque), is one of the prettiest and oldest mosques in the capital of B&H. It is located in the heart of Baščaršija in the old part of Sarajevo. It was built prior to 1528 and to this day decorates the square with its simple, yet special look. Once you enter the mosque, you’ll be greeted by a real little oasis, a quiet courtyard with a fountain, fragrant roses and two tall poplar trees, which makes this one of the prettiest and most memorable mosque courtyards in the entire city. During the war in B&H from 1992-1995, Baščaršijska Džamija was damaged badly, and in 2006 it was declared a national monument, and is on the list of protected historical buildings. 39

činile odbrambeni bedem oko starog grada Vratnika. Tradicija je zadržana i u periodu Austro-Ugarske, zabranjena tokom Jugoslavije, no zahvaljujući ljubavi sarajevskog tobdžije Smaji-

udobno smjestiti i popiti kafu. U tom trenutku čaršija potpuno oživi, a u slastičarnama i kafićima nerijetko se traži mjesto više. Tako Sarajevo tokom Ramazana živi do ranih jutarnjih sati, sve do sehura. Brojni sarajevski lokali rade, prilagođavajući radno vrijeme ovom mubarek mjesecu. Tokom Ramazana život ovdje poprima drugu dimenziju i neki novi ritam. 41

Ramadan Magic

at the Yellow Fortress

IFTAR BENEATH THE SKY WITH SARAJEVO ON THE PALM OF YOUR HAND

I

n a city where the cultures of the East and the West merge, everything has a special charm, and that is also the case with the month of Ramadan when Muslims give up food, drink, and other bodily pleasures from sunrise until sunset. It is a month of blessings, God’s grace, forgiveness, protection and light, which spreads through the souls of worshippers. A special kind of happiness enters the homes of worshippers, and the city smells of the tastiest Bosnian dishes. And Sarajevo’s bakeries, especially the ones at Baščaršija, Alifakovac and Bistrik, complete the Ramadan atmosphere with the smell of 42

somun (flat bread). It is the kind of beauty that you cannot fully experience in other places.

RAMADAN CANNON A real attraction during Ramadan is the Yellow Fortress where Sarajevans, and many tourists, come to enjoy the blessings of Ramadan, and the magnificent view of the city. The fortress is located on Jekovac cliff, which is why it is also known as Jekovačka Fortress, and it is one of the forts which served as a defensive rampart around the old town of Vratnik. It is built out of roughly cut stone, with seven outer walls that

are 10 meters tall, while the eighth one, which faces the north, is 27.5 meters tall. On the north side, there are steps and a space constructed for soldiers, and on the southwest side there is a Muslim cemetery. Even though it is popular all year round, during Ramadan, it is the most popular spot in Sarajevo. This is the place where, during the Ottoman Empire, the tradition of cannon firing started, in order to signify the end of the fasting period during Maghrib. The tradition was maintained during the Austro-Hungarian period, then forbidden during former Yugoslavia, but due to his love of

In the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the sunrises are the prettiest during Ramadan, along with suhoor at čaršija and the Fajr prayer in one of Sarajevo’s mosques, and iftar beneath the sky with Sarajevo on the palm of your hand has become a tradition not just for Sarajevans, but for all Bosnians and Herzegovinians, as well as tourists from all over the world. of Sarajevo, one can take a leisurely stroll down Kovači to go into town until it is prayer time.

MULTICULTURALISM AND TOLERANCE

Those who do not fast should still come here, to experience the uniqueness of the panorama, the socializing, magical smells and food this tradition, Sarajevan cannoneer Smajil Krivić revived it back in 1997. Cannoneer Krivić has been coming to the Yellow Fortress regularly during Ramadan 20 minutes prior to iftar time in order to prepare and check that everything is in place. Once the cannon tube, gunpowder, wicks and lighters are ready, he looks at his watch and waits for the right time. Then, you can hear a bang and you can see the shape of a flas-

hing rose in the sky above Sarajevo, the lights come on in mosques and to the great joy of those who fast, iftar begins.

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE After that, you hear the sound of spoons and glasses of those who are breaking their long fast. Pre-prepared food or food bought at the Fortress, a blanket and good mood is all visitors need for an unforgettable Ramadan experience. Those who do not fast should still come here, to experience the uniqueness of the panorama, the socializing, magical smells and food. After a pleasant meal and a Bosnian coffee with a view of the lights

After prayer-time, a river of people spills out at Ferhadija and Sarači streets, in search of a place to have coffee with their friends. At that time, the čaršija fully comes to life, and it is hard to find an available seat at cafes. That is how Sarajevo lives until the morning hours during Ramadan, until suhoor time. Many establishments in Sarajevo are open, adjusting their opening hours during this special month. During Ramadan, life takes on another dimension and a new rhythm. People visit their families and friends, and eat together and socialize, and what attracts visitors and admiration from those who find themselves in Sarajevo during the holy month is the diversity of customs and religions, multiculturalism and tolerance, which is visible at every step. 43

STAZAMA SUTJESKE Biciklističke rute u Nacionalnom parku “Sutjeska” zadovoljavaju različite afinitete i stepene fizičke spremnosti.

izletištu Rujištu i Boračkom jezeru.

CYCLING TRAILS IN B&H

A Better Life on a Bike THE MOST WELL-KNOWN DESTINATIONS FOR RECREATIONISTS, PICNIC-GOERS, HIKERS AND MOUNTAIN BIKERS Written by: Afan Abazović

Konjuh

The Cycling Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a member of the global cycling organisation called the Union Cycliste Internationale, which was founded back in 1900. With one of its most important documents, Guidelines on Mountain Bike Trail Classification and Signage, it makes it easier for cyclists to choose a trail suitable to their experience and skill level. According to the Adventure Travel Development Index, a ranking of adventure tourism potential for countries around the world, B&H ranks 120th out of the 192 countries 48

assessed, and 72nd in terms of readiness to compete in the adventure tourism sector worldwide. Each year, there is at least one new project for the construction of a bike trail, which raises hopes of having designated recreation and competition trails in every city in B&H which is in close proximity to terrain suitable for mountain biking.

THE ĆIRO TRAIL BETWEEN MOSTAR AND KONAVLE One of the most popular recreation bike trails in B&H, the Ćiro

Trail, goes along a 140-kilometre long old narrow-gauge railway trail between Mostar and Konavle. Reconstruction of the trail took 24 months to complete. Linking the municipalities of Čapljina, Ravno, Neum, and Konavle, as well as the “Herzegovina Bike” Association, the tourist boards of the City of Trebinje and the City of Konavle, REDAH, and DUNEA regional agency, it was branded on the regional and trans-national level. Public Institution “Vjetrenica—Popovo Field” was the lead partner. More than EUR 600,000 was invested in the project.

THE OLD RAILWAY TRAIL IN CENTRAL BOSNIA

KOZARA’S TRAILS—BLUE, GREEN, RED, AND YELLOW

Central Bosnia could be home to the longest recreation bike trail in Europe, spanning 105 km. Under the working title The Old Railway Trail, it was designed to take tourists from Busovača to Jajce, passing along the way through Vitez, Travnik and Donji Vakuf.

National parks in BiH have realised that tourism trail design and development brings great value and offers many opportunities to the area. “Kozara” National Park has designed and developed four trails. Each varies in length and difficulty, but they all start and finish in Mrakovica, the central part of the national park: the Blue Trail (Mrakovica, 4 km), the Green Trail (Kotlovača-Zovik, 13 km), the Red Trail (Mlječanica-Pašini konaci-Vodice, 24 km), and the Yellow Trail (Gola planina-Duge njive.Točkovi).

Here, too, the old narrow-gauge railway tracks, which were built by the Austro-Hungarians, were used, but, unlike with the Herzegovinian Ćiro Trail, an issue arose with this route—facilities had been built there in the meantime, so sections of the trail will be rerouted to go around them. As part of the project, bicycle signs, smart benches, and rest points will be installed. The estimated cost of the project is EUR 260,000 in total. Construction work on the trail began in the summer of 2021. It is implemented by Central Bosnia Canton Tourist Board and the Regional Development Agency.

UNA’S HIKER AND BIKER TRAILS “Una” National Park attracts attention with its trails adapted for the most part to both mountaineers and cyclists, and they go from different directions towards Martin-Brod and Štrbački Buk. It is up to you to choose if you want to hike

through stunning landscapes or explore them on two wheels. Both are a lot of fun. The well-known routes are: Klišević kula (Entrance #2)-Štrbački buk, Gorjevac-Štrbački buk, Štrbački buk-Crno vrelo (a hike that requires you to be in a really good shape), Kulen Vakuf-Stari Grad Ostrovica along the Bunari route.

MOUNTAIN BIKING ON MOUNT KONJUH A few non-governmental projects stand out from the rest when it comes to promoting places to ride mountain bikes. One of them is Konjuh Adventure, which has been held on the slopes of this beautiful mountain in north-eastern Bosnia for five years. “Živinice” Cycling Club has done a lot to promote mountain biking on Mount Konjuh, which can certainly be the backbone of the tourist offer of this part of B&H. This year, the trail went across Marino brdo, Zelemboj, Zidine to Veliki Konjuh and down to Paučko jezero. 49

EIGHT TRAILS IN BLIDINJE Blidinje Nature Park is becoming an increasingly popular destination among picnic-goers, hikers, and mountain bikers. Eight trails are located in this area which lies between Tomislavgrad, Posušje and Jablanica, at the foot of Čvrsnica and Vran mountains. They all start and finish at Vilinac Tavern in Blidinje. The shortest one is 10 km long, while the longest one stretches over 90 km. Three of them are rated as easy, three as difficult, and two as moderate. They connect all the important tourist spots within the nature park, such as the medieval tombstone site, Blidinje Lake, Sovićka vrata, and Pločno—the highest peak of Mount Čvrsnica (at 2,228 metres above sea level).

ALONG SUTJESKA’S TRAILS Bike routes in the Sutjeska National Park meet various expectations, needs and levels of physical fitness. Beginners should partake in activities which do not require much 50

physical effort, which are more focused on time spent in nature, and which include visiting some of the most beautiful look out spots offering views of Perućica and Maglić. For recreational cyclists, there is a route of moderate complexity that includes riding on mixed surface courses and touring the lakes on Mount Zelengora. Those who are ready to embark on a slightly more demanding adventure can opt for an all-day circular route across Mount Zelengora. The Heart of Zelengora route is intended for mountain biking enthusiasts for whom going on an all-day ride through the fairy tale landscapes of the national park is not enough of a challenge. It passes through the most interesting parts of Mount Zelengora and is physically more demanding.

RUJIŠTE-BORAČKO LAKE TRAIL Even though it is rarely associated with mountain biking, cyclists can move in the peripheral areas of

Mount Prenj without any problems. Such areas lie in the south and southeast of the Prenj massif, in the vicinity of Rujište picnic area near Mostar and Boračko Lake. A macadam road links these two locations, and that is the road that Stari most Travel agency used to design its six-hour bike tour. The tour leads from Rujište through Bahtijevići and the village of Borci all the way to Boračko Lake. On the route you can visit two medieval tombstone sites and a vantage point with views of Mount Visočica and the canyons of the Neretva and Rakitnica rivers. Near the end of the route is the Šantić Family Villa, the grave of Lazar Drljača—“the last Bogomile”, and another ancient tombstone site. Boračko Lake is a natural accumulation of fresh water on the slopes of the Prenj Mountain. It is glacial in origin and one of the favourite picnic spots alongside a lake in B&H. If you combine these two picnic locations, you get a chance to learn more about this part of B&H in a completely different way.

Mostar

Doživite proljetnu avanturu! SVAKO KO ŽELI OSJETITI SUSRET HISTORIJE I MODERNOG, BLAGODATI PRIRODE, ČISTI ADRENALIN, VRIJEME JE DA SPAKUJE KOFERE I KRENE ZA MOSTAR

S

Ovdje klima zajedno s kulturno-historijskim

znamenitostima i turističkim avanturama čini ugođaj potpunim.

U svakom slučaju dozvolite sebi dužu šetnju starim dijelom grada sve do simbola i duše Mostara – Starog mosta, i uživajte u kafi i popularnoj hercegovačkoj poslastici smokvari s pogledom na gracioznu Neretvu. U obližnjim restoranima zaljubljenici u gastronomiju bit će zadovoljni velikim izborom jela iz različitih kuhinja, posebno tradicionalne i mediteranske. 53

ith the arrival of spring comes an irresistible desire to finally start spending a lot of time outdoors again. As the nature starts awakening after a long winter, we start spring cleaning our balconies, terraces, and gardens, but also our tired souls. Foreign and local tourists wishing to combine the Mediterranean lifestyle with picturesque natural landscapes are always happy to visit the south of B&H. Mostar is ideal for all those who want to get away from grey clouds or cooler temperatures in areas with predominantly continental climates. The climate, combined with cultural and historical sights and tourist adventures, makes for an enjoyable experience.

A CITY OF HARMONIOUS CONTRASTS Mostar is considered one of the world’s most romantic cities.

Matador Network, a US-based independent travel publisher, recommends it as the perfect destination for lovebirds. It is a city of harmonious contrasts, and that is what makes it quite interesting. Here and there you come across old Turkish houses, outdoor markets, cobblestone streets, and craftsmen’s shops, but modern architecture dominates much of the city. The city is dotted with cultural and historical monuments and those who decide to explore it over the weekend will end up feeling sad because they cannot see everything there is to see in such a short time. In any case, make time for a long walk through the old part of the city until you reach the symbol and soul of Mostar—Stari most (the Old Bridge)—and enjoy enjoy the pleasure of drinking coffee and tasting the popular Herzegovinian delicacy—smokvara (fig pie)—with a view of the graceful Neretva. In the

nearby restaurants, food lovers will be pleased with a large selection of dishes typical of various culinary traditions, especially traditional and Mediterranean cuisine.

“FORTICA” SPORTS AND ADVENTURE PARK Mostar worked tirelessly to give visitors the very best experiences it has to offer. “Fortica” Sports and Adventure Park was built at a distance of only five kilometres from the city. It is a place where everyone can find something for themselves, sport-wise or adventure-wise. The first skywalk in B&H is the latest attraction available in the park. The 15-metre-high and 35-metre-long floating glass promenade offers a fantastic view of Mostar. The main attraction in the park is the longest zip line in Bosnia and Herzegovina located at an altitude of 510 metres. It draws a lar55

58

Centar krase moderno opremljene sobe. Svaka soba posjeduje opremljenu kuhinju, TV, telefon, kupatilo i SOS signalizaciju, centralno grijanje/klimatizaciju.

HEALTHY AGEING

The Podveležje plateau above Mostar, where it is situated, is a typical example of the Herzegovinian karst area, with lots of sunshine, medicinal herbs, and numerous historical monuments. Sunlight floods the area with natural light through the day and it has more sunny days than Mostar. Rarely is there a more beautiful sunset in Bosnia and Herzegovina or beyond than here—it is a real treat to the eye. The colossus and pride of Herzegovina, Mount Velež, shields and protects the area from cooler air masses.

To support the well-being of the elderly and provide them with care while fostering an active lifestyle and spending time amidst nature, the Institution “Podvelež Centre for the Elderly” was built at the foot of Mount Velež. The Majlis (council or assembly) of the Mostar Islamic Community runs the centre, and this care home is the first project of its kind in the Islamic Community in B&H.

The centre sits at an altitude of 750 meters. It is considered a kind of aerial spa which is why it is an ideal place for healthy ageing, especially for people with lung and cardiovascular diseases. In addition to longterm stay, the centre also offers the possibility of short-term stay aimed at improving one’s health by resting, recreating and taking part in similar activities outdoors, far

The Institution “Podvelež Centre for the Elderly” features 18 double rooms, 8 triple rooms, 60 beds, a living room with a dining area, an outdoor space for rest—terraces and balconies, a space for walking and recreation. The centre also has its own mosque with a library and a reading room.

hile we are young, things keep changing all the time and it is easy for us to make acquaintances easily, but there comes a point in life when we enter a peaceful harbour where there is little change. It becomes particularly difficult when your children no longer live close to you or you cannot live a more relaxed life because of health problems.

STARA UTVRDA I ZAMAK OSTROŽAC

Bajka

u Cazinu

MEĐU UTVRDAMA KOJE SE MOGU PRONAĆI NA PODRUČJU CAZINSKE KRAJINE SVJEDOČEĆI O DOGAĐAJIMA IZ PROŠLOSTI OVOG KRAJA, IZDVAJA SE OSTROŽAC, KOJEG MNOGI PROLAZNICI DOŽIVLJAVAJU KAO PRIZOR IZ BAJKI

S

Lothar pl.

I on joj je ispunio želju. Naredne, 1900. godine, Isabella pl.

THE OLD FORTRESS AND OSTROŽAC CHATEAU

A Fairy Tale in Cazin AMONG THE FORTRESSES THAT CAN BE FOUND IN THE CAZINSKA KRAJINA REGION, BEARING WITNESS TO THE EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE IN THE PAST, THE OSTROŽAC FORTRESS STANDS OUT, WITH MANY VISITORS LIKENING IT TO A SCENE OUT OF A FAIRY TALE.

T

he Old Town of Ostrožac is located in the western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Ostrožac Fortress sits on a hill above the left bank of the River Una and in the settlement bearing the same name which belongs to the Cazin Municipality, at a distance of 12 km from Bihać on the way to Bosanska Krupa, or more precisely – where the road branches off towards Cazin. Owing to its location, Ostrožac was the administrative centre of many rulers, including counts from Blagaj, various agas and beys, captains from Krajina and other famous, and less known, rulers. The significance of the old town of Ostrožac is best illustrated in the past of Cazinska Krajina. 64

A FORMERLY LUXURIOUS CHATEAU Whoever ruled the chateau would adapt it to their taste and the needs that would arise throughout various periods, and those who had the chance to see it until the start of World War II had this to say:

“The chateau is luxurious. The chambers are full of artfully crafted items. There are music rooms and a library with a large number of books, paintings, portraits of family members, large and small bedrooms, halls with hunting trophies, household items and furniture with wood carvings and marquetry.”

OUR HOME

A HOME TO NOBLE FAMILIES

“This is the most gorgeous place there is and it was meant to be our home…” Isabella pl. Berks shouted to her husband, Lothar von Berks, who was mayor of the Bihać District from 1896 to 1905. And he made her wish come true…

Its name, according to old records, was mentioned as early as in 1286. Chronicler Ivan Tomašević, however, claimed at that it had existed in 405 BCE under the name of Horosium or Hostosach, but this has not been historically proven.

THE LARGEST CHATEAU Lotar von Berks Chateau is the largest and only chateau in our country. The Old Town of Ostrožac was declared a National Monument of B&H in 2013.

And while its rulers rotated across the centuries, members of the Beširević family started ruling Ostrožac as captains in 1579, and they ruled for nearly 300 years. Since it ruled for so long, the family had the right to inherit the old town and the fortress, and Mehmed Bey Beširević sold the old town of Ostrožac to Lothar von Berks, who was the mayor of the Bihać County from 1896 to 1905. Lothar pl. Berks was a knight of the Order of Malta, a government adviser, an imperial and royal chamberlain, the Founder of the B&H Mountaineering Association, chief of police, and an honorary citizen of Sarajevo. On a 27-hour tour of the Bihać County, which he organised on behalf of the Habsburgs, Berks and his wife Isabella pl. The Berks, or Blla as she was affectionately called, gazed at what was left of the town of Ostrog. Isabella von Berks, whose maiden name was Adamović pl.

Čepinska, was a romantic soul delighted with the size of the fort, its vivaciousness and position so she began to dream of a magnificent chateau above the River Una. “This is the most gorgeous place there is and it was meant to be our home,” she shouted to her husband as they were walking around the ruins of Ostrožac for the first time. And he made her wish come true…

Later on, the Second World War, the old town of Ostrožac was the seat of the main headquarters of the National Liberation War. This is where, they say, the plan for a very important event was created—the second session of the Anti-fascist Council of the National Liberation of Yugoslavia (AVNOJ).

The following year, in 1900, Isabella pl. Berks signed a sales contract with Mehmed Bey Beširević, a descendant of the last Ostrožac captain Murat Bey, and thus became the owner of the old town of Ostrožac and left a recognisable mark on this complex. The town was then reconstructed and a fortress was built. They settled there in 1902. A serpentine road leading from the Una valley to the Ostrožac Fortress and a bridge over the River Una were also built. Ostrožac became a fairy tale town.

The old town has got a special artistic flair to it thanks to the Ostrožac Sculptors’ Colony. Founded in 1969, the colony made sure that there was a park with sculptures of various shapes carved out of a special type of limestone called bihacit. The following artists left their sculptures here: Stipe Sikirica, Tomislav Todorović, Stipe Ledić, Ahmet Bešić, Samir Sućeska and many others. The tradition of creating sculptures continues to the present day, which makes it the longest-standing sculptural colony in B&H.

1. NEPONOVLJIVI DOŽIVLJAJ NACIONALNOG PARKA UNA

Istinskoj moći prirodnih zakonitosti turisti svjedoče tokom cijele godine, no, neponovljiv doživljaj ove vodene čarolije donose proljeće i ljeto. Svaki kutak možete istražiti pješke, biciklom, spuštajući se niz rijeku Unu čamcem, kajakom, ili turističkim vozom Smaragdnom dolinom rijeke Une. Sa svojim slapovima i brzacima koji izazivaju veliko poštovanje, privlači ljubitelje adrenalina i ekstremnih sportova. Ovdje možete posjetiti čuveni Milančev buk, najposjećenije mjesto NP Una – Štrbački buk, diviti se Martinbrodskim slapovima, zaviriti u utvrde i sakralne objekte.

No one can stay indifferent to the wonders of nature in Una National Park. That is why it is regarded the star of Bosnian-Herzegovinian tourism. Situated in the north-western part of B&H, the park has scattered its natural wonders throughout the territory of Bihać. As a nature reserve, the park stretches along the valley of the upper course of the River Una as well as around the canyon of the River Unac, the right tributary of the River Una, all the way to the River Krka in the west. Tourists can witness the true power of the laws of nature throughout the year, but the spring and summer seasons offer visitors a unique experience—gorgeous waters of the River Una. You can explore its every corner on foot or by bike, boat or kayak down the river, or you can take the tourist train called the Emerald Valley of the Una River. With its falls and rapids that demand respect, it draws adrenaline seekers and extreme sport enthusiasts. Here you can visit the famous Milančev buk, Štrbački buk—the most visited spot in the park, admire the Martin Brod Waterfalls, and take a peek into the fortifications and places of worship in the area.

2. LJETNA POZORNICA SREDNJOVJEKOVNOG GRADA SOKOLAC

2. SUMMER STAGE OF THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF SOKOLAC

Summer Stage of the Medieval Town of Sokolac is an open-air stage offering theatrical, musical and film performances, panoramic views of the city, and incredible sunsets. With the creation of a new tourist brand, more than a thousand years of history, myths and legends have allowed Sokolac, a well-known medieval town, to have a summer stage on which a new cultural, artistic and fun-filled future of the tourist offer of Bihać can be written. Sokolac Tower, as it is also called, was built on a high and steep hill about three kilometres away from Bihać. It was opened to visitors as early as in the 19th century after undergoing restoration work thanks to the Bihać County Mmayor, Count Lothar Berks. It was the first form of tourism that was practiced in the area. As a result, in the near future it will have replaced its former strategic importance with the status of a special cultural and historical asset of the tourist offer in Bihać.

3. HISTORIC TESTIMONY—GARAVICE MEMORIAL PARK Bihać is home to an invaluable testimony to the bloodshed of the Second World War—Garavice Memorial Park—which is devoted to the thousands of victims of the fascist terror. Built to the design of Bogdan Bogdanović on the ridge of Garavica Hill in 1981, it consists of 15 stone columns in an abstract design, each 4.5 metres high, and the inscription right at the entrance reads quite clearly: “Life is stronger than death, justice is stronger than crime, and love is stronger than hate.” 69

4. ZNAMENITOSTI U SRCU BIHAĆA

4. LANDMARKS IN THE HEART OF BIHAĆ

O tragovima novije historije u Bihaću svjedoči Muzej AVNOJ-a, gdje je 1942. održano Prvo zasjedanje AVNOJ-a, s ciljem političke afirmacije narodnooslobodilačkog pokreta Jugoslavije.

The largest number of sights in Bihać is in the city centre—the heart of the city, its historical part. That is where the Bosnian “Hagia Sophia” was built in the 13th century. Originally built as a church, the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, it was converted into a mosque with the arrival of the Ottomans in the 15th century. The mosque was named Fethiye Mosque, which means conquered. Modelled after it, other mosques were soon built in Krajina. The new Church of St. Anthony, which was declared a national monument of B&H together with the tomb of the Bihać nobility, was built at the end of the 19th century. At that time, it looked absolutely magnificent rising above the city centre together with Fethiye Mosque and the Captain’s Tower. Many stories are going around about the tower and there is this one that says that the tower saved the life of the Croatian-Hungarian King Bela IV from the Tatar cavalry and as a sign of his gratitude he declared Bihać a free city. Nowadays it is home to the Una-Sana Canton Museum and contains exhibits of the Japodi tribes. Next to the Captain’s Tower is the well-known Bihać Stone Mausoleum. The locals strongly resisted and fought against the enthronement of the Austro-Hungarian monarch, but failed. So the mausoleum was built as a memorial to honour the fallen soldiers. Traces of the more recent history can be seen in the Muzej AVNOJ-a, which is the site of the first session of the Anti-Fascist Council of the People’s Liberation of Yugoslavia (AVNOJ) was held in 1942. Its aim was to gain political support for the Yugoslav national liberation movement.

5. ŽIVOT NA GRADSKOJ OTOCI Za idiličnu šetnju i doživljaj Une u samom centru grada posjetite gradsku otoku. 70

5. LIFE IN GRADSKA OTOKA For an idyllic walk and experience of the River Una in the city centre, visit Gradska otoka--an island in the centre of Bihać. You can come across a few friendly local artisans there who will be happy to share their business story with you and show you a wide range of home-made items—food, cosmetics or artwork. The island is also a well-known concert and motorbike show venue.

6. HAVING A BLAST AT UNA REGATTA The River Una is known for being a great rafting location. The rafting season lasts from March to October. Una Regatta, the traditional rafting event, shows just how much fun it can be to raft around here. If you want make memories for a lifetime, enjoy nature and spend a few nights in a tent with friends or meet new people, then this is something you should not miss.

7. UNA BOATS AS A TOURIST BRAND Those who want to sail serenely on the River Una will be delighted with the Una boats. The area is known for these boats. The people who live along the banks of the River Una become accustomed to the life next to a river from an early age and it is rare to come across someone who cannot sail a boat. Over time, such boats became a tourist brand. Experience boat rides on the River Una at River Dock, the Natura ART resort and the Japodi Islands.

8. THE JAPODI ISLANDS AND THEIR CHARM The Japodi Islands are fairytale-like heart-shaped islets on the River Una. Little bridges take you across the river, terraces allow you to enjoy views of the beautiful Una and the surrounding area, and log houses and tree houses provide you with a place to spend the night. The campfire is lit to the sound of the guitar, sweet corn is grilled over it, and food is served to the guests on boats. The summer season in the Japodi Islands is known for unconventional gatherings, while nature puts on a perfect show for all to see: the sunrise and sunset. 71

10. PROGRAM ZA UŽARENO LJETO

10. HOT SUMMER PROGRAMME

Summer brings us loads of memorable parties. As a festival, Bihać Summer has made the city recognisable in the theatre calendars throughout B&H, as well as the neighbouring and a few European countries. In the festival days, a multitude of treasure chests full of cultural and historical heritage are opened. What would summer be like without great gigs at various locations in a single city? Bihać Summer Gigs makes the summer in the city on the River Una even hotter, while the Bihać Roars Music Festival, in an attempt to actively resist the systematic collapse of culture, promotes the values we have lost. An important place in the sport event landscape is given to Bicycle Races. Each is special its own right and a large number of pedalling enthusiasts take part in them. Regardless of whether they love these noble animals or they just want to enjoy the horse races, horse racing fans have a chance to take pleasure in the Mustafa Vuković and Alija Izetbegović memorial horse races at Bakšaiške Bare Hippodrome in Bihać twice a year. Una National Park Hill Race encourages people to go back to nature to improve their health and their quality of life, because we can get lost in a forest, but we must not lose our forests.

76

Sezona raftinga počinje 1. maja i traje do polovine oktobra.

Stotinama metara duga šetnica s drvenim stepenicama i rukohvatima posjetiocima omogućava lakši pristup atraktivnom buku, dok mali vidikovci duž staze pružaju bolji pogled i pregled ostalih zanimljivosti parka. Time je najveća atrakcija Nacionalnog 77

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

NOVA PERSPEKTIVA Nacionalni park Una oduševljava prirodnim ljepotama, unskim slapovima, odmorom, ribolovom i gastronomskom ponudom.

Međunarodno takmičenje u mušičarenju – flyfishingu, NP Una organizuje u junu i oktobru u ribolovnim revirima br. 1 Martin Brod i br. 1B Kulen Vakuf, na rijekama Una i Unac. Pored pastrmki Unac i Unu naseljava i lipljan.

Una

National Park

A UNIQUE NATURAL AREA OFFERING EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE: A PEACEFUL HAVEN, GREAT FUN AND A HOLIDAY TO REMEMBER

N

amed after the impressive River Una—meaning the only one—which is the name the Romans gave to the river, Una National Park attracts visitors throughout the year and is most beautiful in the spring, summer, and autumn season. Here, awareness of the preservation of natural heritage is taught from an early age through ecological workshops and quizzes for young children. For years, environmental clean-ups called Just a Little Bit of Good Will have been organised every year on Saturdays from April to June, and 17

May marks the Day of the Una River. A few days later, on 21 May, there will also be a lot of fun here because runners will come to participate in the 3rd Una National Park Hill Race which is organised by the Bihać-based Ultra Sporting Association.

FUN AT THE PARK Rich in falls, waterfalls, cascades and rapids, the River Una is a real treat for extreme sport enthusiasts who love rafting, kayaking, and diving. The rafting season starts on

1 May and lasts until mid-October. For a large number of local and foreign guests, Una Regatta—the popular international tourist and sporting event—is the highlight of the summer season which allows them to enjoy the region’s gorgeous landscapes for four days. Una Regatta has been postponed in response to the global coronavirus outbreak, but its 48th edition will take place in the last week of July, which is when it usually takes place, and the official date will be announced soon. 79

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

SPECTACULAR WATERFALLS While you are sailing on the River Una you are passing through some of the most gorgeous landscapes the national park has to offer. Štrbački buk Waterfalls is the highest and most spectacular waterfall there. A several hundred metres long boardwalk with wooden stairs and handrails gives visitors easier access to the parks’ stunning waterfalls, while small lookout points along the boardwalk provide a better view and overview of other attractions in the park. One of its most beautiful attractions are old grain grinding mills. Each of them is sheltered in a wooden house built on piles over water or on raised stone pillars standing in the water.

80

The road leading to Strbački buk, which runs for 5.2 km, has been paved recently. That means that the star attraction in Una National Park has become even more accessible to tourists, and this will certainly lead to a higher number of visitors to the park. Known for its grain mills and pumpkins in history, Martin Brod is also a special place in the park. There are many waterfalls in its travertine area. Among them, Jalak, Srednji and Donji waterfalls, as well as Veliki slap, and Milančev buk—the largest and most beautiful site in Martin Brod which was nominated for the UNESCO Natural Heritage Site List—stand out. The entire Martin Brod Waterfalls Complex has a vertical drop of 54 metres with an average flow rate of 63 cubic meters of water per

second. From this place, and throughout the village the complex is situated in, you can see many other waterfalls, pools and cascades, which makes it one of the most popular sections of the River Una and parts of Una National Park. Near the path leading to Milančev buk there is a picnic area called Lučica. Nowadays, it is a multifunctional area designated for camping. New toilet facilities have been built here. There are other sites popular with tourists in Martin Brod. In Gornje selo (Upper Village), there is a natural, environment-friendly washing machine called “bučnica”, believed to be over 300 years old. Bučnica has seven spin speeds and effectively cleans the laundry without any washing agents thanks to a high concentration of pure and

oxygen-rich water, which creates a centrifuge effect inside a barrel with small holes. Aware of the value of the resources they have, representatives of Una National Park believe that the entire area should be branded and added to a world travel destinations map. They also think that conditions for the candidacy of both pearls of the park, Štrbački buk Waterfalls and the Martin Brod Waterfalls Complex, for inscription on the UNESCO Natural Heritage Site List have been met.

A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE Una National Park delights visitors with its natural beauty, cascades, leisure and recreation activities which include fishing, and a variety of delicious food on offer. The tro-

ut and fly fishing season began on 1 March, and all fishing areas will be open as of 1 May. Una National Park is planning to organise an international fly fishing competition in June and October in the following fishing areas: #1 Martin Brod and #1B Kulen Vakuf on the Una and Unac rivers. The abundance of high-quality river fish attracts a large number of sport fishermen to fly fishing sites. The River Unac is rich in large brown and rainbow trout, because these two types of fish weigh between 2 to 6 kilograms on average in the River Unac, even though larger size trout weighing over 10 kilograms hides in its whirlpools. In addition to trout, grayling can also be found in these two rivers. Year after year, accommodation units in Una National Park have

been growing in number. A newly built hotel with 100 beds has just been opened in Orašac. In addition to Orašac, if you want to stay in the heart of Una National Park, you can also book a room in Kulen Vakuf, Lohovo, Račić, Ripač, and Martin Brod, but also near Bihać, Bosanski Petrovac and other towns in Una-Sana Canton. Una National Park recently presented a conceptual design for the construction of a cable car which would connect the medieval Old Town of Ostrovica and Kulen Vakuf. The cable car would cost several million Bosnian marks to complete. Its construction would improve the tourist offer, make it easier for a large number of tourists to reach different places in the region, and allow visitors to discover Una National Park from a completely different perspective. 81

MJESTO AKTIVNOG ODMORA I UPOZNAVANJA TRADICIONALNOG ŽIVOTA U SUGLASJU S PRIRODOM

N

Crne Gore UŽIVAJTE U LJEPOTAMA OBALE SKADARSKOG JEZERA, KAMENE PRIČE LOVĆENA I DUBOKIH KANJONA DURMITORA

ENJOY THE WONDERFUL COASTLINE OF SKADAR LAKE, STONY STORIES OF LOVĆEN, DEEP CANYONS OF MT. DURMITOR AND MAGICAL MT. PROKLETIJE

e are introducing three out of five lakes covering 8% of the territory of Montenegro and symbolising the extraordinary diversity and contrasts of the heart of the Mediterranean.

“DURMITOR” NATIONAL PARK It covers an area of five Montenegrin municipalities, but its centre is the town of Žabljak, the largest winter resort in Montenegro offering winter sport facilities and catering services in the field of tourism and mountaineering. Durmitor is home to 18 glacial lakes at an altitude of more than 1,500 meters above sea level. The locals call them the eyes of the mountain, but the most stunning one is the Black Lake. A top tourist attraction is the Tara River canyon.

“LOVĆEN” NATIONAL PARK Covering the central and highest part of a mountain of the same name, encompassing 6,400 hectares, Lovćen is famed for a number of look out points offering all-around views across the surrounding area: the sea, Skadar Lake, or high mountains in the north. Mount Lovćen is the symbol of Montenegrin freedom, and Montenegrins think of it as the holy altar. It is here, at the top of Jezerski vrh, that the glorious Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, spiritual and secular ruler of Montenegro and a renowned poet and philosopher, was built. Even today, people in the former Yugoslavia remember him as the author of the famous epic poem and drama called The Mountain Wreath. Visiting his mausoleum is the national park’s star attraction. It is

accessible via a 20-kilometre road from Cetinje, and then there are 461 steps to take up to the entry at the top of the mountain.

“SKADAR LAKE” NATIONAL PARK Many civilisations that had passed through this area have left behind their traces contributing in this way to the cultural and historic mosaic of the Skadar basin. Skadar Lake islands are dotted with many medieval fortifications, churches and monasteries, while two tiny towns on the lake’s shore, Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića, are recognisable due to the restaurants serving traditional specialties. There are many attractive beaches along the lake shore and in appearance they do not differ from those on the sea coast at all. 93

pit letenja u Novom Sadu.

Dream Big and Fly High

M

THE YOUNGEST PILOT IN THE HISTORY OF GENERAL AVIATION IN B&H HAS ALREADY RECEIVED AN OFFER TO TAKE TOURISTS ON A PANORAMIC TOUR IN THE SUMMER.

arija Nović (17) became known to the public as the youngest pilot in the history of general aviation in B&H. She has been living between two places, Derventa and Belgrade, for several years. She is attending a vocational school—Aviation Academy. On track to achieve her goal, which is to obtain a license for flying passenger airplanes, pilots of Air Serbia Ivana Milojević and Biljana Savić are her role models and a source of inspiration.

PRIVATE FEMALE AIRLINE PILOT At first, Marija’s interest in aviation was related to air traffic control, but when she mustered up the courage to attend flight training and felt the magic of flying, she decided she wanted to become a professional pilot. “In my second year of school, at the age of 16, I was given the opportunity to attend a private pilot licence (PPL) theoretical knowledge course at school in parallel with regular classes. The theoretical course includes nine exams: aircraft general knowledge, meteorology, communication, navigation, operating procedures, human performance and limits, air law, flight performance, and principles of flight. After passing the exams in the Civil Aviation Directorate in Belgrade and obtaining a medical certificate before turning 17, I received a pilot logbook and gained the right to attend a practical training

course. For three months, I attended the course lessons every day at the airport in Subotica, and in October 2021 I took a practical flight exam in Novi Sad. That’s when I officially got my PPL license,” says Marija, who has flown Cessna 150, Cessna 172 and Piper 38 thus far.

FREEDOM, ADRENALINE, PRIDE AND FEAR “Flying an airplane is absolutely delightful. You get mixed feelings when flying an airplane: freedom, admiration for the beauty of nature, responsibility, a rush of adrenaline, pride, and a slight feeling of fear, which is actually good to have, because people who feel a slight fear of flying an airplane adhere to the prescribed procedures and respect the airplane’s capabilities” “Flying an airplane is absolutely delightful. You get mixed feelings when flying an airplane: freedom, admiration for the beauty of nature, responsibility, a rush of adrenaline, pride, and a slight feeling of fear, which is actually good to have, because people who feel a slight fear of flying an airplane adhere to the prescribed procedures and respect the airplane’s capabilities.” Now that she has become a private airplane with an international licence, Marija has already received an offer to take tourists on a panoramic tour

in the summer. However, on her very next flight, her family member will be among the passengers on the flight, and her primary school teachers can also fly with her if they want to.

FUTURE FEMALE AIRLINE CAPTAIN Since very few female pilots sit in the cockpit nowadays, we asked her about the participation rates of girls compared to boys at her school. - There are a lot of girls in our school. While the number of girls focusing on aircraft mechanics is slightly lower, very few of them opt for pilot training. Out of seven students in my class, I’m the only girl,” says Marija, whose biggest challenge at school is time management. In an effort to obtain all the diplomas and licences she needs to have, she is attending several training courses in parallel. Her education will not end when she graduates from the Aviation Academy. Next year, she will not only be in her fourth year at the Aviation Academy, she will also be in her first year of Traffic School. Pilot training and education is costly, so she is immensely grateful to her family for all the support they have given her. She makes them proud of the results she gains and the goals she has set for herself, because Maria will not stop until she reaches the top and becomes an Airbus captain, either for a domestic or foreign airline. 97

Na vrhu

Afrike

TOMISLAV CVITANUŠIĆ, TRIATLONAC I BH. PLANINAR, DOSEGNUO JE S GRUPOM PLANINARA IZ BIH, SRBIJE, CRNE GORE I HRVATSKE NAJVIŠI VRH AFRIKE – UHURU, KOJI SE NALAZI NA PLANINI KILIMANDŽARO. OVO JE NJEGOVO PUTEŠESTVIJE

K

“KO TRAŽI CILJ, OSTAT ĆE PRAZAN KADA GA DOSEGNE, A KO NAĐE PUT, CILJ ĆE UVIJEK NOSITI U SEBI.” Nejc Zaplotnik, Put.

Stižemo u hotel u Arushu, loše razvijen grad u usporedbi s evropskim standardom, s ulicama prepunim prodavača hrane i suvenira.

PUTOVANJA / TRAVELS

U timu imamo doktore medicine, inžinjere, ekonomiste, IT stručnjake i druge profesije, ali sve 110

ount Kilimanjaro is a volcanic crater dominating with its three peaks the border between Tanzania and Kenya. At a massive height of 5,895 metres above sea level, Uhuru Peak is the African continent’s highest peak. Rising 4,600 metres from its base to Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain rise in the world. To protect its numerous endangered plants and animal species, Kilimanjaro National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

ADVENTURE STARTS AT THE AIRPORT The ascent to Kilimanjaro is also the ascent to one of the seven peaks on each of the seven continents known as the Seven Summits. So far, the only Bosnian and Herzegovinian to have fulfilled his dream and scaled the seven summits is Naim Logić, an exceptional man living in Arizona. I have personally summited on the highest peak in Europe—Elbrus in Russia at 5,642 m, in South America—Aconcagua in Argentina

at 6,961 m, and in North America— Denali in Alaska at 6,190 m. Making the climb to Kilimanjaro is an achievable challenge for hikers and high altitude mountaineers of all skill levels in good physical shape because it is a non-technical high altitude climb. For that reason, the number of people making the trek each year is large. The big-

zegovina met at Belgrade Airport. After about twenty hours of travel, we finally arrived at our destination. Adventure started at Kilimanjaro Airport. When we got our Tanzanian visas, we learned that our luggage had not arrived. The next flight was scheduled for the next day, at the same time, and we were trying to remain positive. It was going to be even more interesting to do a night-time route to the first base camp, because we were going to get off to a late start. We arrived at a hotel in Arusha, a poorly developed city by European standards, packed with sidewalk vendors selling food and souvenirs. We were only going to stay there for the night. Luckily, our luggage arrived one day late. After retrieving it, we headed out to the national park. In the car park at the entrance to the national park we met the guides and porters who were going to help and support us to the peak. This was the first time someone was carrying some of my kit and gear for me so I was a bit embarrassed. I had always carried all my gear my113

self—in Alaska, I carried as much as 60 kg of my load on a sled and in a backpack. It was raining while we trekked through the tropical rainforest. After five hours, in the light of our headlamps we reached the first campsite, Mandara Hut Campsite, at an altitude of 2,720 metres. The following morning after breakfast we continued to climb further towards Horombo Huts Campsite sitting at an altitude of 3,720 metres. As the path led us towards the top, we entered the steppe, and in the afternoon we reached our destination for the day. The trail turned into mostly-bare dirt trail with lots of rock, and there were several stream crossings on this stretch. A few team members were experiencing mild symptoms of high altitude sickness such as headache and loss of appetite. Our third day on the mountain was dedicated to adapting to the height. As planned, we reached the Zebra Rocks, located at 4,000 metres. It 114

is an area with a set of large volcanic rocks and interesting plants. We then returned to Horombo Huts Campsite where we spent a pleasant time talking over dinner. We had medical doctors, engineers, economists, IT experts and other professionals in the team, but we were all united by a common passion for the mountains. The team was great and we all agreed that we were bound to succeed. The fact that there was poor or no mobile network coverage once we entered the national park meat that we were not able to access the internet and social media platforms, which is why it lifted our mood and helped strengthen our relationships. There is no hot water or electricity at the campsites on the way to the summit, so you need to bring a power bank or small foldable solar panels. The food is typical of the area—banana soup or eggs with white yolk. I would find it difficult to get used to these flavours and eat such food for extended periods of time.

The ascent to Uhuru Peak begins at the Horombo Huts. As we moved through another climate—the alpine desert, green forests transitioned into the arid and rocky terrain of the heath zone. As we left Mavenzi Peak behind, in the distance we were able to see the side of the crater we would later climb. We did not walk any faster than Pole Pole, which is Swahili for slowly, because we were at an altitude that demanded respect. At around two o’clock in the afternoon we arrived in Kibo, the last campsite at an altitude of 4,720 metres. After lunch, we had a brief meeting and rest before departure. The ascent to the top would start at midnight. In anticipation of departure, the majority of team members showed mild symptoms of altitude sickness and insomnia. Local guides were with us throughout the ascent, and to hear them happily sing the Hakuna Matata song (which means no problem) in unison made for the most memorable moment of all. The whole time on the way to the summit, particularly during the final ascent, we felt like we were a part of a team that had a higher purpose. At midnight we gathered together at Kibo Hut and made the final preparations for the ascent. We climbed

in a line, one after the other, slowly, putting one foot in front of the other, stopping for a break at areas with more rocks to shelter behind from the wind. Four hours later we stepped foot on Gilman’s Point, 5,756 metres into the sky. There, at the edge of the crater rim, we had a chance to see one of the most enchanting sunrises on the planet. After we reached the edge of the crater, traversing around the rim to get to Uhuru Peak was much easier. In those moments, we enjoyed the well-known snows of Kilimanjaro and the highest peak of Africa that inspired Hemingway’s famous story, despite moving at a much slower pace with each step due to the altitude that was draining our strength, both physical and mental. Glaciers on the southwest slope continue to resist climate change and stand in all their glory. After eight hours of climbing we finally summited the top of Africa. We stayed there for a NO SOCIAL MEDIA short while and then began to descend. “The fact that there’s poor or With each step it no mobile network coverage became easier do once you enter the national park come down the momeans that we cannot access and in a few untain. iplomantica Fakulteta likovnih umetnosti u Beogradu, Irena Petković (26), zajedno s partnerom Bojanom Ralićem stvorila je alter ego, brend i posao Queen of Compass prije dvije godine u Vijetnamu. Time su svoja putovanja učinili životom.

“Godinama plivam uzvodno u rijekama umjetnosti, fotografije, slikarstva, grafičkog dizajna i stvaranja. mnogo toga. Uživala sam i radila poslove u domenu marketinga, organizacije i turizma. Queen of Compass pod lupom predstavlja sve to uokvireno”, govori Irena.

Ljudi plijene svojim unutrašnjim mirom i pozitivnim načinom razmišljanja.

SETTING OFF ON A TRIP AS THE PANDEMIC STRUCK, WHICH THEY BELIEVED WOULD END IN A LITTLE WHILE, IRENA AND BOJAN ENDED UP BEING STUCK IN VIETNAM WHICH TURNED FROM A DREAM INTO REALITY

LIVING HAPPILY IN THE HERE AND NOW “When you decide to live a nomadic life it comes with a curse—you’re always missing something. In Serbia, we’re missing everything but the people, and in Vietnam, we wish we could teleport all the people we love and care about there. Vietnam has certainly taught us to live happily in the here and now and make the most of it without thinking about the past unnecessarily.”

A

graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Belgrade, Irena Petković (26), together with her partner Bojan Ralić, created the alter ego, brand and business called Queen of Compass in Vietnam two years ago. Through that, they made their travels their life.

A BUSINESS TEAM Irena and Bojan travel and create marketing content for clients in the tourism and hospitality industry. As a business team they have the same goal—to create the best and most creative brand presentation. At the same time, both of them have their own preferences. Bojan enjoys portrait photography and capturing spontaneous moments, while Irena enjoys the food, everyday life and culture of a nation. After Vietnam, their goal is to do the same all over the world. “For years I’ve been swimming upstream in the rivers of art, photography, painting, graphic design and creation. After graduating from university, I realised that it wasn’t enough. Even though art is what I always thought I was, it turned

out that I was so much more than that. I’ve enjoyed working in the marketing, organisation, and tourism industry. I’ve learned that I feel equally passionate about all these industries, and I’m always looking for something that could unite all my passions. My greatest passion— the need to explore and travel—had to encompass it all. Queen of Compass shows it all under a magnifying glass,” says Irena.

“Without much worry, our plan was to stay in a few countries for a month and finish the trip with a visit to Indonesia, where we planned to stay a little longer. We were travelling through Vietnam when Indonesia closed the borders, and shortly afterwards Serbia followed. We ended up being stuck in Vietnam not knowing that Vietnam would turn from a dream into reality.

LIVING NEXT TO A BEACH It all started with an online post, a note about everyday life in Vietnam and as a wish to present the country. Then, it turned into a need to show to those who are curious to know more what it is like to be an immigrant in Vietnam, and through their own experience, help them organise their trips in the future more easily. “Before long we knew that this was slowly becoming our main preoccupation, and soon it became our business,” explains Irena, who set off on a trip through Southeast Asia with Bojan in early 2020 thinking that the situation with the pandemic would end in a little while. 121

Life in Vietnam is fateful, unplanned, but highly desirable. As the pandemic struck, we found ourselves in the city of Da Nang where we had been based for two years. Da Nang became our home, more than Serbia, which is where we’re from. Living in Da Nang, next to the beach, comes with all the benefits of a comfortable and peaceful life. Travelling around Vietnam for several years allowed us to gain a real insight into how we wanted our everyday life to look like, and we were guided by that vision. We’ve built a business we love, the food is an everyday blessing for us—it is fresh, available, and of premium quality. Tropical life, freedom and perpetual exploration of something new and inspiring—that’s our life.” There are a few more things that swept them off their feet. 122

Vietnam is blessed with astonishingly gorgeous natural beauty—despite having seen a lot in two years, they feel like they have only just scratched the surface and seen the important sites. People captivate you with their inner peace and positive outlook on life. Family is sacred to them and their friends are part of the family.

happy to return to. Morocco is their first real adventure, and a place they always wish to go back to. They believe that Thailand and Sri Lanka are the jewels of Asia, and the next time they revisit these two countries they plan to stay longer. Italy, and the Italian Alps, is a place where they would build a home.

Since they are avid foodies, their palates are satisfied on a daily basis thanks to the availability of fruit, seafood specialties, light vegetarian food, traditional Vietnamese cuisine, and Korean barbecue specialties. On top of that, eating out is incredibly cheap.

“It often seems to me that I could write books about our adventures and the anecdotes that happened to us along the way. Travelling for us has always been like life in miniature: obstacles, quick problem solving, important acquaintances, unreal landscapes, excitement, research, and lessons. There’s one common feature in all the challenges we’ve faced and that’s the people. The way they’ve helped us in distress and made us feel at home has restored our faith in the human

race time and again. All these people will always have a special place in our minds and hearts, and they’ll always be the stars of the stories that we’ll be telling at the table.” Travelling has defined who Irena and Bojan are and changed them for the better. They viewed each culture they got to know, each acquaintance they made or problem they faced along the way as a reflection of themselves. Perpetual curiosity and research has led them on a journey of seeking knowledge and of self-discovery and continuous introspection. “Travelling helps us become more open to change, differences become the norm, not fear. We become a lot more patient than we used to be and we pay more attention to the memories we look back on later on in order to validate the fullness of our lives. All this helps us gain a greater understanding of others and therefore of ourselves. When we understand ourselves, we’re at peace with ourselves and we live in harmony with our needs, and we’re happier,” says Irena in the end, revealing that they want their future home to be in Spain. In their dreams, they see a house not far from nature and the beach, with neighbours they are close to, the

warmth of Spanish humor and the sophistication of Spanish cuisine… but all this will only be possible after they find success and fulfilment as digital nomads, young entrepreneurs travelling the world, creating content and exploring new places. 123

3

Jedite manje mesa, peradi i ribe.

6 7

Recikliranje papira, plastike, stakla i aluminija sprečava nastanak deponija.

Izbjegavajte predgrijanje rerne. Hranu stavljajte u rernu u trenutku kada je upalite osim onda kada želite postići preciznu temperaturu.

8

Zakrpite pukotine na prozorima i vratima kako biste poboljšali energetsku efikasnost domaćinstva.

9

Zamijenite stare aparate energetski efikasnim modelima i sijalicama.

Ako ste u mogu ćnosti, u svoje kuće ugradite solarne panele. To će vam umanjiti račun za struju!

11

Nabavite tepih. Tepisi i ćilimi održavaju kuću toplom i potrošnju manjom!

12

Uklanjajte snijeg ručno. Izbjegavajte bučne grtalice koje ispuštaju izduvne gasove i fizički se aktivirajte tokom zimskih dana.

13

1

Kupujte domaće. Podržavanje lokalnih proizvođača stimuliše zapošljavanje i sprečava potrebu za prelaženje velikih udaljenosti prilikom isporuke.

2

6 7 126

8

Koristite vlastite kese kada idete u kupovinu. Odustanite od plastičnih kesa i nosite svoj platneni ceker.

Kupujte „vintage“ stvari. Novo nije nužno bolje. Pogledajte šta možete iskoristiti od robe dostupne u second hand radnjama.

Održavajte svoj auto. Ispravan auto će emitovati manju količinu štetnih gasova.

9

Darujte ono što ne koristite. Vaše humanitarne organizacije će vašoj staroj odjeći, knjigama i namještaju dati novi život.

Vakcinišite sebe i svoju djecu. Kada štitite svoju porodicu, također doprinosite javnom zdravstvu.

10

Iskoristite svoje pravo glasa za odabir vođa u svojoj zemlji i lokalnoj zajednici.

STVARI KOJE MOŽETE ČINITI NA POSLU

6

3

4

Mentorišite mlađe osobe. To je veoma inspirativan, pažljiv i efikasan način savjetovanja mlađih kako bi izgradili bolju budućnost.

5

Organizujte No Impact Week na poslu. Naučite kako živjeti na održiv način tokom barem jedne sedmice.

9

Velika količina smeća kojeg stvaramo na zemlji završava u okeanima.

10

Analizirajte i mijenjajte svakodnevne odluke.

Nejednakost plata opstaje.

to Saving the World THE UNITED NATIONS HAVE PUBLISHED “THE LAZY PERSON’S GUIDE TO SAVING THE WORLD”, A LIST OF SUPER EASY THINGS THAT EVERY PERSON, EVEN THE LAZIEST ONE, CAN ADOPT INTO THEIR ROUTINES IN ORDER TO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND AGENDA 2030. SO CHANGE STARTS WITH YOU. SERIOUSLY. EVERY HUMAN BEING IS PART OF THE SOLUTION.

THINGS YOU CAN DO FROM YOUR COUCH

1

Save electricity by plugging appliances into a power strip and turning them off completely when not in use, including your computer.

2

Stop paper bank statements and pay your bills online or via mobile.

3

5

Share, don’t just like. If you see an interesting social media post about women’s rights or climate change, share it so folks in your network see it too.

Speak up! Ask your local and national authorities to engage in initiatives that don’t harm people or the planet.

7

Turn off the lights. Your TV or computer screen provides a cosy glow, so turn off other lights if you don’t need them.

6

Report online bullies. If you notice harassment on a message board or in a chat room, flag that person.

Stay informed. Follow your local news and stay in touch with the Global Goals online or on social media at @GlobalGoalsUN. Tell us about your actions to achieve the global goals by using the hashtag #globalgoals on social networks.

THINGS YOU CAN DO AT HOME

1

Air dry. Let your hair and clothes dry naturally instead of running a machine. If you do wash your clothes, make sure the load is full.

2

3

4

Take short showers. Bathtubs require gallons more water than a 5-10 minute shower.

Eat less meat, poultry, and fish. More resources are used to provide meat than plants

Freeze fresh produce and leftovers if you don’t have the chance to eat them before they go bad. You will save food and money.

5 6

Compost—composting food scraps can reduce climate impact while also recycling nutrients.

Recycling paper, plastic, glass and aluminium keeps landfills from growing.

7

8

Plug air leaks in windows and doors to increase energy efficiency

9

Replace old appliances with energy efficient models and light bulbs

10 11

If you have the option, install solar panels in your house. This will also reduce your electricity bill!

Get a rug. Carpets and rugs keep your house warm and your thermostat low.

12

Shovel snow manually. Avoid the noisy, exhaust-churning snow blower and get some exercise.

13

Use cardboard matches. They don’t require any petroleum, unlike plastic gas-filled lighters.

Avoid pre-heating the oven. Unless you need a precise baking temperature, start heating your food right when you turn on the oven.

THINGS YOU CAN DO OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE

1

Shop local. Supporting neighbourhood businesses keeps people employed and helps prevent trucks from driving far distances.

2 3

Shop Smart—plan meals, use shopping lists and avoid impulse buys. Don’t succumb to marketing tricks that lead you to buy more food than you need, particularly for perishable items.

Bike, walk or take public transport. Save the car trips for when you’ve got a big group.

5

4

Bring your own bag when you shop. Pass on the plastic bag and start carrying your own reusable totes.

6

7 130

Use a refillable water bottle and coffee cup. Cut down on waste and maybe even save money at the coffee shop.

Shop vintage. Brand-new isn’t necessarily best. See what you can repurpose from secondhand shops.

Maintain your car. A well-tuned car will emit fewer toxic fumes.

9

8

Donate what you don’t use. Local charities will give your gently used clothes, books and furniture a new life.

Vaccinate yourself and your kids. Protecting your family from disease also aids public health.

10

Take advantage of your right to elect the leaders in your country and local community.

THINGS YOU CAN DO AT WORK

1 3

If you have a fruit or snack that you don’t want, don’t throw it out. Give it away to someone who needs and is asking for help.

2

Does everyone at work have access to healthcare? Find out what your rights are to work. Fight against inequality.

4 5

9

Women earn 10 to 30 per cent less than men for the same work. Pay inequality persists everywhere. Voice your support for equal pay for equal work.

Does your company invest in clean and resilient infrastructure? It’s the only way to keep workers safe and protect the environment.

7

Try to reduce waste, since most waste ends up in our oceans.

10

Make sure your company uses energy efficient heating and cooling technology, and adjust the thermostat, lower in winter, higher in summer.

6

8

Mentor young people. It’s a thoughtful, inspiring and a powerful way to guide someone towards a better future.

Organize a No Impact Week at work. Learn to live more sustainably for at least a week

Raise your voice against any type of discrimination in your office. Everyone is equal regardless of their gender, race, sexual orientation, social background and physical abilities.

11

Examine and change everyday decisions. Can you recycle at your workplace? Is your company buying from merchants engaging in harmful ecological practices?

Know your workplace rights to ensure your access to justice.

12

Corporate social responsibility counts! Encourage your company to work with civil society and find ways to help local communities achieve the goals.
