Uvodnik

Stoga pronađimo svoje ‘gorivo’ i zakoračimo sigurno u budućnost. Vaš magazin Furaj.ba

DOBITNIK NAGRADE THE ADAMS PRIZE

Maida Bilal, an activist of Kruščica, was awarded the 2021 Goldman Environmental Prize for her fight against the construction of two planned small hydropower plants on the Kruščica River. She led a group of women from her village in a blockade of heavy equipment that resulted in the cancellation of permits for two proposed dams. This is of massive importance for the Balkans, which is home to the last free-flowing rivers in Europe. Established in 1989, The Goldman Environmental Prize is a recognition awarded annually to grassroots environmental activists, one from each of the world’s six geographic regions. 16

The University of Cambridge announced the winners of one of its most prestigious prizes for first-class research in the mathematical sciences. Mahir Hadžić, who developed an interest in mathematics as a primary school pupil, was awarded The Adams Prize for his work in the field of partial differential equations. This Zvornik-born mathematician is currently a professor at the Department of Mathematics at University College London.

JOHANNA STRÖMQUIST, ambasadorica Švedske u BiH

Ljudi su snaga BiH Razgovarala: Elma Zećo / Foto: Irfan Redžović

U ULOZI AMBASADORICE NAŠLA SE PRVI PUT KADA JE 2019. STIGLA U BIH. JOŠ UVIJEK JE VEOMA SRETNA I UZBUÐENA ŠTO JE OVDJE, IAKO JE PANDEMIJA OTEŽALA NJEN POSAO I UPOZNAVANJE ZEMLJE NA NAČIN NA KOJI JE TO ŽELJELA

M

Time se smanjuju emisije, štede javni fondovi i otvaraju nova zelena radna mjesta.

sko skijanje, to ovisi o danu, raspoloženju i vremenskim prilikama. Odlazim na Jahorinu, Bjelašnicu, Igman i Dvorišta.

Sretni smo i tužni zbog manje-više istih stvari. Kako biste opisali Sarajevo? - To je, zaista, izvanredan grad sa svojom arhitektonskom mješavinom Istoka i Zapada. Bogata multikulturalna evropska historija, zanimljivi muzeji i prekrasna okolna priroda trebali bi učiniti Sarajevo turističkim odredištem za ljude iz cijelog svijeta.

Pamtite li zanimljivu anegdotu s putovanja?

JOHANNA STRÖMQUIST, Ambassador of Sweden to BiH

The Strength of B&H is the People SHE BECAME AMBASSADOR FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2019, WHEN SHE WAS APPOINTED TO SERVE IN B&H. SHE IS STILL VERY HAPPY AND EXCITED TO BE HERE, EVEN THOUGH THE PANDEMIC HAS MADE IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR HER TO DO HER JOB AND TO EXPLORE THE COUNTRY THE WAY SHE WOULD HAVE LIKED TO Interviewed by: Elma Zećo Photo: Irfan Redžović 22

S

he joined the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1999 and today she has more than 20 years of experience in the field of foreign and security policy. Johanna Strömquist, Ambassador of Sweden to B&H, has always been curious, interested in history, international politics, interpersonal relations, languages, and other countries and cultures. Fairly early on she realised that being a diplomat was the perfect job to enjoy all this while also doing something valuable. She has mainly focused on EU integration, state-building and peacebuilding in Central and Eastern Europe, in the Western Balkans and Middle East both for the Swedish Foreign Ministry and the EU and the UN. Working for the UN in New York

she dealt with peacekeeping issues throughout the world. As with most careers, one task led to another as new opportunities emerged.

GREEN JOBS You worked in various high positi‑ ons. When did you first find yourself in the role of ambassador? - I was appointed Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019. That was my first assignment as ambassador. With what expectations did you take over the position of Swedish Am‑ bassador to B&H, and what are the priorities during your mission? - Before I took up this position I was the Director for South Europe at the

Foreign Ministry of Sweden. I worked with other parts of the region for more than ten years so I had a pretty good idea what to expect. I was very happy to get to live and work in this beautiful and fascinating country. But, of course, I also know it is a country with a complex political system and many challenges. My and the Embassy’s mission is to work with partners in the country to support reforms in Bosnia and Herzegovina needed for the country to be able to join the EU. It is about transforming society for the benefit of the population while making sure the whole of Europe is stable and prosperous, because in a strong Europe we can work together to meet all the challenges we are facing in the world today. 23

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

In which fields do Sweden and B&H have a good cooperation, and whi‑ ch fields could we develop in the future? - We have a very good cooperation in many fields related to EU integration, such as building strong and transparent institutions that can deliver services to the citizens. In the environment and climate sector our cooperation includes clean air and clean water, the fight against organised crime, and economic development. There are also many private Swedish companies present here. Swedish companies have a lot of innovative solutions to offer in the field of environmental technology. I would be happy to see a closer cooperation there. What activities do you carry out in the field of sustainable develop‑ ment? - We do so much in this area but I will use the example of air-pollution to illustrate how we work. We provide Swedish experts who work with the institutions in this country to develop a country-wide strategy and action plan for all environmental

Sarajevo “Its rich multicultural European history, interesting museums and beautiful nature surrounding it should make Sarajevo a tourist destination for people from all over the world.“ issues, including how to reduce air pollution. We also work with civil society organisations to support their work to raise awareness abo24

ut the dangers of air-pollution and what needs to be done.

old pollution heaters with new environmentally friendly ones.

We also provide equipment and expert advice from Swedish authorities to the responsible authorities here in Bosnia and Herzegovina on how to measure and analyse the pollution in order to have facts to base decisions on. And finally, we support the activities that will make public buildings energy efficient. This reduces emissions, saves public funds and creates new green jobs. We have recently also started to co-finance subsidies in the Sarajevo Canton for people who want but cannot afford to replace their

EXPLORING THE WORLD Your job has taken you to different countries. What have you learned the most about people and cultures? - Having lived in many different countries on many different continents I have learned something that might sound like a cliché but is true in my experience. Much more unites people around the world than what divides them. People are pretty much the same, if you get to the core. We are happy and sad about more or less the same things.

Jahorina, Bjielašnica, Igman and Dvorišta. It is incredible to have so many options so close to Sarajevo. Which destinations do you like to travel to? - Living abroad, my favourite destination for holidays is Sweden. Especially in summer. To me, nothing beats Swedish summer with long, bright nights. But, of course, living in Sarajevo, I have also enjoyed having Croatia and the sea so close. There are also many beautiful places in Bosnia and Herzegovina still to explore. I have a long list of places that I want to visit and things I want to do, among them rafting, seeing the wild horses in Livno, and going for a wine tasting trip. Do you remember any interesting travel anecdotes?

How do you feel in B&H? - I am still very happy and excited to be here despite the fact that the pandemic has made it more difficult to explore the country the way I would like to. Right now, I am also concerned about the political crisis that takes away focus from all the work that needs to be done to create a better life for everybody in this country. How would you describe Sarajevo? - It is a truly remarkable city with its architectural mix of East and West. Its rich multicultural European history, interesting museums and beautiful nature surrounding it

should be a tourist destination for people from all over the world. Where do you see the special stren‑ gth of B&H? - The special strength of Bosnia and Herzegovina is, without a doubt, the people.

A BETTER LIFE Your Instagram account shows that you like to spend time in nature, especially skiing. What are your favourite ski resorts in our country? - Since I like both Alpine and Nordic skiing, it depends on the day, the mood, and the weather. I go to

- One time when we were on our way back from Banjaluka to Sarajevo, we stopped at a Trappist monastery because we had been told they sold good cheese. We ended up getting all the explanations by the local monk in German about all the medical tinctures and all the names of the herbs being used by the monastery to make them. We spoke in German because it was the only language we had in common. I have to say that my knowledge of German did not really allow me to go that far into the flora, so we had a good time trying to understand each other. We managed somehow and I left with the good cheese and some tinctures. I think I know what they are good for. What do you wish for 2022? - I hope 2022 will be a much calmer year than 2021 so that we can all focus on positive things and work on the issues that matter most to people to make their lives better. 25

Bosanskohercegovački muzičar Damir Imamović dobitnik je nagrade The Best of Europe britanskog magazina Songlines, koja je ustanovljena 2009. godine.

They Made Us Proud GOOD NEWS FOR THE END OF THE YEAR

JASMILA ŽBANIĆ AWARD FOR THE BEST EUROPEAN FILM AND BEST FILM DIRECTOR At the 34th European Film Awards ceremony, the film about the Srebrenica genocide—Quo Vadis, Aida?—won first place in three categories. It was named the best European film this year, and director Jasmila Žbanić was named the best film director in Europe for 2021, while Jasna Đuričić received the award for best actress in 2021. The director dedicated this award to the “women of Srebrenica and our mothers who taught us how to turn destruction into love”.

DAMIR IMAMOVIĆ EUROPE’S BEST ARTIST Bosnian musician, Damir Imamović, is the winner of The Best of Europe award given by the British magazine Songlines, which was established in 2009. Since 2016, the awards have been given depending on the continents that artists come from. The very announcement of the nominations at the beginning of April showed that the work of our sevdalinka performer was noticed more than ever. He was the only contestant this year with two nominations—for the best artist in Europe and for the best artist. Damir dedicated the award to his father, Nedžad Imamović.

ELVEDINA MUZAFERIJA A HISTORIC SUCCESS AT THE WORLD CUP In the super-giant slalom in the Swedish St. Moritz at the Ski World Cup, Bosnian skier Elvedina Muzaferija won 13 points, which was the best result that Bosnia and Herzegovina has ever achieved in skiing at the World Cup. She won 18th place, finishing the race with a time of 59.41, 1.6 seconds slower than Italian Federica Brignone, who won. At the same time, this feat is the best result in Elvedina Muzaferija’s career so far.

Godina novih avantura NA PODRUČJU BIJELE, U DOLINI PLANINE PRENJ, POČELA JE IZGRADNJA POTPUNOG UGOĐAJA ZA LJUBITELJE ADRENALINSKOG I OUTDOOR SADRŽAJA – OUTDOOR RESORT “VISIT KONJIC”

V

Prenj. U šatorskom naselju proveli smo jednu noć, a dva dana osvajali vrhove Hercegovačkih Himalaja, kako pravi ljubitelji prirode često nazivaju Prenj”, kaže Sanjin Bubalo, direktor agencije Visit Konjic, koja najavljuje veliki projekat – Outdoor Resort na području Bijele u dolini planine Prenj. “Imamo divne rijeke, jezera, planinske vijence, bogatu kulturnu baštinu, a uz ambiciju, iskreni trud, rad i zalaganje uvijek dođete do ostvarenja vizija i želja.

PREDSTAVLJAMO / INTRODUCING

2022—The Year

of New Adventures

IN THE BIJELA AREA, IN THE MOUNT PRENJ VALLEY, THE CONSTRUCTION OF OUTDOOR RESORT “VISIT KONJIC”, A PERFECT DESTINATION FOR ADRENALINE JUNKIES AND OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS, HAS BEGUN

I

t has long been known that tavel agency Visit Konjic is the place to go to experience unforgettable adventures in the untouched nature of B&H. It specialises in outdoor tourism, one-day and multi-day outdoor activities. These are combinations of rafting and canoeing on the Neretva River, hiking and jeep tours to the Prenj, Visočica, Bjelasnica, and Čvrsnica mountains, and mountain biking and canyoning tours.

A NEW VISION Active holidays in attractive destinations in B&H are attracting increasing numbers of tourists from the European Union, so Visit Konjic 32

is currently creating travel packages in partnership with EU travel agencies. “For the EU market, or to be more specific Belgium and the Netherlands, we’re trying to create custom-made scout programmes. Young people aged between 14 and 20 stay in B&H from 8 to 15 days, get acquainted with our culture and history, stay in a camp, and our guides organise different kinds of games and activities for them to add excitement and fun to their experience and make it memorable. Young people from Belgium and the Netherlands were most impressed by the Tisovica Valley on Mount

Prenj. We spent one night at a tent camp and two days hiking the peaks of the Herzegovinian Himalayas, as true nature lovers often call Mount Prenj,” says Sanjin Bubalo, the director of Visit Konjic, which has just announced its big new project—Outdoor Resort in Bijela in the Mount Prenj Valley. Right from the start, when Sanjin and his wife worked as tour guides, they had a vision of what kind of difference they wanted to make in the tourism industry and in which direction they wanted to develop their own business. They recognised the potential first in Konjic and then in B&H and the Balkans.

“We’ve got beautiful rivers, lakes, mountain ranges, rich cultural heritage, and with ambition, genuine effort, work and commitment, you can always achieve your aspirations and goals. Our idea, the project called Outdoor Resort “Visit Konjic”, is in the making, construction work is ongoing, and we’re facing new challenges on a daily basis. We intentionally don’t call them issues or obstacles. The more we get involved every day, the more we meet new creative, innovative, and resourceful people who inspire us and give us strength to succeed.”

OUTDOOR RESORT’S FIVE ZONES Designed to span across 10,000 m2, Outdoor Resort “Visit Konjic” is envisioned to be a perfect destination for adrenaline junkies and outdoor enthusiasts. It will be divided into five zones. The meeting zone and the pentagon-shaped base building are in the last stage of construction. It consists of a basement which includes storage room, reception area with indoor restaurant, ten double rooms and a roof terrace, and next to this building an artificial rock for climbing is also going to be made.

Other zones are: a bungalow zone, the so-called Lukomir Mountain Village featuring a natural lake, a gastronomic zone with fountain, a glamping zone, and a recreation zone in the resort’s forest area. “The past two years have been challenging for tourism professionals. Covid-19 brought the whole world to a stop at one point, including our construction work and regular business. We believe that next year will be full of adventure and that we’ll be able to open the doors of a few parts of our resort,” points out Sanjin. 33

AMRA DŽEKO

Razgovarala: Elma Zećo Foto: Privatni album

A

SRETNA SAM MAJKA, POSLOVNA ŽENA I SUPRUGA”

Prvenstveno uživam gledajući kako stvaraju svoje kreacije, svjesna s koliko truda, ljubavi i strasti pristupaju izradi poklanjajući pažnju svakom detalju. U kojem smjeru priželjkujete dalji razvoj platforme? Uspjeli smo u našoj nakani – izaći van granica BiH i olakšati malim poduzetnicima vidljivost i prodaju.

SLOŽNA PORODICA Vi ste aktivna žena i majka četvero djece. Kako balansirate majčinstvo, karijeru i supruga?

Sretna sam majka, poslovna žena i supruga.

Una, Dani i Dalia još uvijek su mali, no šta biste rekli, kome karakterom najviše nalikuju? 35

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

– Odgovorni smo i puni ljubavi. 36

ZIMSKI ODMOR NA ALPAMA Volite putovati.

is My Driving Force “I’M LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH A LOVING AND UNDERSTANDING FAMILY THAT SUPPORTS ME THROUGH THICK AND THIN. I’M A HAPPY MUM, BUSINESSWOMAN, AND WIFE.” Interviewer: Elma Zećo Photo: Private Album

A

mra Džeko is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most popular public figures. She has built her modelling career and life abroad, but she is always happy to return to her home country, where she is known as one of the leading advocates of philanthropy. She is the first ambassador of the ‘Heart for the Children with Cancer Association’. Three years ago, as a co-founder, she set out to build the first domestic online platform for buying and selling handmade products called OREA bazaar. This time too, the mission was noble—to support small businesses and handcraft makers from B&H so that their handmade products could reach as many people as possible. One of the achievements that makes her particularly proud of being a part of this story is the happiness and satisfaction of the OREA community members. “We started telling real stories in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and now, 37

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

three years into the project, I can freely say that we’ve all—both founders and handcraft makers—told dozens of beautiful stories together, and the best is yet to come. I’m glad that when we first said that our Art Markets would give people the option to donate for charity, they themselves suggested that we donate a percentage of sales to the ‘Heart for Children with Cancer Association’.”

you love something, nothing’s difficult. Clearly, all of us have got moments of crisis, but with the support of our partner and our loved ones, no obstacle is insurmountable. I’m lucky to have such a loving and understanding family that supports me through thick and thin. I’m a happy mum, businesswoman, and wife.

EXPANSION IN THE REGION OREA’s creative community is quite large. Whose creative work do you find particularly interesting and is there something you are always happy to buy for yourself? – I really love them all. Each handcraft maker is special in their own way. Of course, depending on the occasion, I decide on the right one. I primarily enjoy watching them create their products, aware of how much effort, love and passion they put in creating their handcrafts by paying attention to every detail. How would you like the platform to develop in the future? – We’re planing to promote the existing handcraft makers, but our doors are open to everyone else who wants to join us. We’ve already managed to expand beyond the borders of B&H and make it easier for small business owners to gain visibility and boost sales. Now what we want is to strengthen our family and expand it. We’re planning to expand in the region, i.e. diversify our product range by adding wonderful new creations from Croatia and Serbia to our current offering. You have spent years modelling and you have also been involved in acting, but are there any other fields of business you would like to prove yourself in or explore? 38

Our Children “We like to say that they’ve picked up both the best and the worst from both of us. They can be a little stubborn like Edin (laughs), but they’re also good and loving just like he is.” – OREA is a project I’ve put my love into. The idea to create it came about among a group of friends, and then we gathered a large number of hard-working, kind-hearted people, so I want OREA to be even more successful on the market, and I want our people’s creativity to be recognised throughout Europe and the world.

A HARMONIOUS FAMILY You are an active wife and mother of four children. How do you balance being a mum, businesswoman, and wife? – When you’re organised and when you get used to being on the move 24 hours a day, then nothing’s difficult. It’s all comes down to love; it’s much easier to live that way. When

Your eldest daughter Sofia came of age and enrolled in college in Ame‑ rica, while your youngest daughter Dalia celebrated her first birthday. How challenging is the age differen‑ ce in your approach to upbringing and building relationships with children? – Letting Sofia go off to college was a very emotional experience for me. I loved watching her grow into a lovely girl. She’ll always be my little girl who’s got her own path in life, and I’ll be there to support her in whatever she decides to do. Even though she’s far away in Los Angeles right now, we’ll all make a joint effort to keep the wonderful bond between sisters and brother strong. Sofia has always been by my side and helped me with the little ones. We’ve always done everything together as a family, we’ve talked a lot and adapted to various changes that took place, so everything flowed naturally and smoothly, without any special challenges. Una, Dani and Dalia are still quite young, but what would you say, who do they take after more? – It is much too early to talk about character, but Dani strongly resembles Edin in appearance. We like to say that they’ve picked up both the best and the worst from both of us. They can be a little stubborn like Edin (laughs), but they’re also good and loving just like he is.

This is perhaps our best trait, the fact that we don’t hide our feelings and our passion. We’re trying to raise our children in such a way that they learn to love all people, but also to stand up for themselves. How would you describe yourself as a mother and Edin as a father? – We’re responsible and loving.

WINTER HOLIDAY IN THE ALPS You love to travel. Which place do you always choose for your winter holiday destination? – Since Edin’s always got a short winter break due to the nature of his job and he’s not permitted to ski, Dubai was our favourite destination. We went there every winter, but this time we’ll use the time we’ve got to have a good rest in the Alps not far from Milan. When foreigners ask you about B&H, how do you describe your country? – I’ve lived in Los Angeles, Paris, Rome, Milan, stayed in many other cities, but my Sarajevo and B&H are special, primarily because of the people who live there. I talk with much love about my country, its gorgeous mountains, lakes, waterfalls, rivers… We’ve got everything, and yet the most beautiful thing about B&H are its hospitable people. People who’ve been in our country are most impressed by the kindness the Bosnian-Herzegovinian people who’ve gone through a horrible ordeal and who’re always ready to help. How much has the pandemic affe‑ cted you and how have you coped with the changes it has brought? – Being isolated from my family has been the hardest thing for me since I

haven’t seen them in a long time. I’m an emotional person, and I’ve missed everyone so much. We’ve talked over video call, but it’s not the same as being able to hug someone. It’s damaged us all, not to mention how many people have lost their lives,

jobs and roof over their heads. I hope this madness ends soon. What do you wish for 2022? – My wishes don’t change. I only wish to have good health. I always wish everyone good health. 39

ADVENT U MOSTARU Tuzla društveni događaj, a u nekim probati mirisni noviteti. Mirisni Winter Lounge by Orbico bit će otvoren do 10. marta 2022. godi-

Mostarce i goste grada u Novu 2022. uvest će Indira Levak i grupa Twist.

Mostar

WHEN THE COLD WINTER COMES AND IT SNOWS, IT DOES NOT MEAN WE HAVE TO GIVE UP ANYTHING. WHAT MATTERS IS THAT WE GO TO THE RIGHT PLACES, IN THE CITY OR IN NATURE, WHERE WE CAN FEEL THE CHILDLIKE JOY OF LIFE THAT ONLY COMES WITH WINTER.

E

very year in Sarajevo, the famous ski resorts on the Olympic Mountains entice people to have fun in the snow, while the city itself hosts the Winter Magic at Skenderija event, which has the largest open ice rink in BiH, as well as the “Winter on Wils” event by Sarajevo Holiday Market. LED lighting has been installed along Wilson’s Promenade, leading to this winter theme park with holiday decorations, an amusement park, and an ice rink of over 500 square meters. The “Winter Garden” is closed, and after-work parties will be held there every day, starting at 5 PM, while live concerts will be held every evening. The “Winter on Wils” event will last until January 15, 2022, while the rink on Wilson’s Promenade will continue to operate until the end of February. Some real holiday magic awaits you in front of the Importanne Centre. Transparent bubble tents, 44

which have become quite common in B&H, are gaining popularity because they create an intimate and magical winter atmosphere. This is the place to be if you want to enjoy spending time in not just one, but in 15 bubble tents. Each is thematically different and each features a different design. While some of these bubble tents allow you to have a drink, listen to your own music, hang around with friends, organise a business or social event in some of them, others allow you to test new fragrances. Fragrant Winter Lounge by Orbico will be open until 10 March 2022. Feel the magic of moments this creative setting brings.

THE WINTER IN TUZLA Tuzla has also got its own festive ice rink. When the evening falls, Panonika Tuzla Ice Rink becomes a magical place to skate on. Covering an area of 550 m2, it is open for everyone.

The locals and guests alike will be able enjoy the festive season and a rich culinary offer created by small business owners from the Tuzla area at Trg slobode until 9 January 2022. All this is part of the Winter in Tuzla event, set up by the Tuzla Tourist Board and the City of Tuzla, which includes a music and entertainment programme featuring Tuzla-based performers.

THE ADVENT IN MOSTAR Even though the Mediterranean climate prevails in the south of B&H, that does not mean that Herzegovinians will be deprived of the opportunity to enjoy the joys of winter. When we think of Mostar, we think of the sun, the Neretva River, and the Old Bridge, but only 18 km north of Mostar, on the outskirts of the Prenj Mountain, is the Rujište picnic area. Skiers and boarders are really happy when it is winter season because that is when Rujište is in its full glory.

joys. Many interesting activities and the most beautiful winter outdoor activity—a skating rink at Zrinjevac City Park—have been prepared for them. The surface of the ice rink and ice rink span more than 500 square metres.

The festive atmosphere has been spreading throughout the city of Mostar since the beginning of December. The central part of Mostar and Zrinjevac City Park are decorated with thousands of beautiful lights.

As a central entertainment spot in the city, on the occasion of Advent, the Promenade hosts wooden huts offering a wide selection of souvenirs, handicrafts and the most diverse culinary offer so far.

It is a sign that it is time for the Advent in Mostar, which began with the lighting of the first Advent candle on 28 November 2021 at Rondo. The event offers an entertaining programme for all ages, but mostly for children who are especially looking forward to the holidays and winter

The people of Mostar and city guests will enter the year 2022 to the voice and music of Indira Levak and The Twist. The fun festivities will continue well into the following day. With their performance, Josip Palameta and his band will create a feel-good mood at the after party.

THE WINTER PARK IN BIHAĆ The fifth New Year’s winter festival— “Winter Park”—will last until January 1, 2022, at the City Square in Bihać, while the rink will be open until the end of January. Almost every night until the end of the year, the people of Bihać and their guests will enjoy local performances and other Bosnian bands. The young Bosnian music star, Džejla Ramović, and an accompanying band will perform at the New Year’s Eve event, which will be held on Gradski trg (Town Square). A two-day festival of performing arts will also be organised, joined by guests Zijah Sokolović and Studio Teatar Zenica. Also, on 31 December, a New Year’s Eve event for children will be held, organised by the Bihać Youth Theater. 45

S

THE BEST WINTER EVENT IN SARAJEVO

THANKS TO ITS RICH CONTENT, WHICH EVOKES A FEELING OF UNIQUE JOY DURING THE WINTER PERIOD, THE EVENT IS RIGHTLY CALLED THE WINTER MAGIC AT SKENDERIJA.

S

ince its opening, Skenderija has always been known as a gathering place for children, youth, and adults in the city of Sarajevo. It has achieved this reputation by organizing large numbers of tempting children’s programs and content as well as other events using the services of the Skenderija Center. Winter Magic at Skenderija is a project that has been talked about a lot in recent years and which is eagerly awaited. This is no wonder, considering how much joy it brings into the lives of visitors during the sixty days of the event! 48

The fact that more than 125,000 visitors have attended this event speaks best of the enthusiasm surrounding the Winter Magic at Skenderija, which was realized by the KJP Center at Skenderija in 2019 and 2020.

will certainly be a reason for joy and delight for people of all ages, including children, youth, and adults.

Nothing less is expected from this year’s program, which lasts from November 29, 2021 (marking the 52nd birthday of the Skenderija Center this year) to January 31, 2022. It

Sarajevo as one of the favorite destinations in B&H offers excellent opportunities for practicing winter sports in addition to its rich cultural and historical heritage.

A SOURCE OF POSITIVE ENERGY

One of the Most Beautiful Locations Amer Kapo, director of the KJP Center Skenderija

THE ICE SLIDE The event’s most recent novelty is a large ice slide that children and adults can use with the help of professionals. This icy attraction is as long as 30 meters and 6 meters high.

Ice skating is trendy, whether it is practiced somewhere far away on a frozen lake or on an artificially built ice rink. Good company and energetic music facilitate good rhythm and energy, and all skaters find it especially charming when they don’t have to think about the limitation of space for various movements.

The Winter Magic at Skenderija event has the largest open ice rink in B&H! It has an interesting shape and appearance with very attractive light decorations. It serves as an exceptional opportunity for socializing and getting to know young people this year as well as for spreading the positive energy that everyone really needs. The Winter Magic event progresses every year. Compared to the previous period, the ambience of Winter Magic has been enriched with new content. Now there is a large ice slide that children and adults can use with the help of professionals. This icy attraction is as long as 30 meters and 6 meters high. In addition to it, on the plateau itself in the open space of the Winter Magic event, there are also: - a large ice rink of approximately 2500 m²;

- New Year’s decorations; - an open stage for poprock performers; - wooden houses with gastronomic offers; - traditional B&H trade crafts and handicrafts.

The large ice rink with rich cultural and entertainment content for children and adults is a place of positivity, which will also be additionally enriched by famous pop-rock bands on the open stage or in Dom Mladih (Youth Center). The Winter Magic event will be partly held indoors, in the Mirza Delibašić hall. In addition to the Fair of Economy and Consumer Goods, the New Year’s Children’s Fair will also be held here from December 15, 2021 to January 1, 2022. Everything will be in one place: the amusement park, playrooms, cars, various children’s equipment, toys... The Skenderija Center’s security service takes care of the health of the visitors of the event, which monitors and ensures the implementation of all proposed epidemiological measures.

60 DAYS OF MAGIC The management of the Skenderija Center has taken up this great task

“I might be biased when I say that this winter, the plateau of the Skenderija Center will be one of the most beautiful locations in the world. None of this would have been possible without the government of KS, the Ministry of Economy, and the Assembly of KS (for all terms of the previous five years), which accepted our ideas and helped co-finance the purchase of equipment that adorns Skenderija without so much as a second thought. Of course, all the money in the world cannot help if you do not have valuable workers and great experts in a team who do their best to make the citizens of Sarajevo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, enjoy the charms offered by the Skenderija Center, the symbol of Sarajevo.” this year as well. It has shown that it follows the standards of highly developed cities in the region, successfully designing content from the technical-technological aspect of a very complex project for different age groups for 60 days in a row. Thanks to great effort and commitment, the Winter Magic event of previous years was not only interesting to the local population but also attracted foreigners and tourists from other cities to Sarajevo. Without a doubt, it will be among the favorite tourist destinations this year. 49

IZLOŽBA BIH U PRETHISTORIJSKO DOBA

3000 PREDMETA, LEGENDE, CRTEŽI I REKONSTRUKCIJE OBJAŠNJAVAJU SVAKODNEVNE AKTIVNOSTI PRETHISTORIJSKOG ČOVJEKA BIH

P

EXHIBITION BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA IN PREHISTORY

The Largest Post-war Project of the

National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina 3,000 ARTEFACTS, LEGENDS, DRAWINGS AND MODELS EXPLAIN EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES OF PREHISTORIC HUMANS IN B&H Written by: Elma Zećo Photo: Adnan Šahbaz

T

owards the end of October 2021 a new exhibition Bosnia and Herzegovina in Prehistory was opened to the public at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a permanent collection, along the two existing exhibitions— Bosnia and Herzegovina in Ancient Times and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Middle Ages—it completes the story of life, as well as human social and cultural development in the area of the present day B&H from ancient times to the end of the medieval period.

A TESTAMENT TO HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT The exhibition depicts the development of material and spiritual culture of people from today’s B&H in the earliest period in history. “Such a distant past may oftentimes seem abstract to people and they may have a vague picture of the way people lived at the time. This exhibition, however, is a testa-

ment to the human achievement in prehistory and its significance, and it shows that cultural communities belonging to various prehistoric ages were a part of the world at the time,” says Dr. Sc Ana Marić, senior curator at the National Museum of B&H. The exhibition Bosnia and Herzegovina in Prehistory is the largest postwar project of the National Museum of B&H. Over the course of the past five years, extensive work has been carried out to prepare it. It gives a chronological insight into the prehistoric period through special thematic units. Visitors can get acquainted with all the segments of life of prehistoric humans, starting from the Old Stone Age, Palaeolithic, and all the way to the Roman conquest. “Out of 100,000 items in the museum’s prehistoric collection, approximately 3,000 of the most important artefacts have been selected. In an attempt to show and explain various everyday activities in a clear

and comprehensive way, they are accompanied by legends, drawings and models.” Artefacts from across B&H, which have been an integral component of the prehistoric collection of the National Museum of B&H since its foundation in 1888, are a part of the exhibition. “Each exhibited artefact has its own a cultural and historic value, and it’s quite difficult to single out any one in particular, regardless of whether they are stone axes, ceramic utensils, bronze and silver jewellery, or money and weapons,” says Ana. Some of the most important sites where these items were unearthed are: Badanj in Borojevići near Stolac, Butmir near Sarajevo, Lisičići near Konjic, Hrustovača near Sanski Most, Donja Dolina near Bosanska Gradiška, the area around Glasinačka plateau, Ošanjići near Stolac, Pod near Bugojno, and Jezerine and Ribić in the valley of the River Una. 53

JAJCE

kraljevskog blaga SIMBOLIČNO, TAMO GDJE JE OTKUCAO POSLJEDNJI DAMAR BOSANSKOG KRALJEVSTVA DANAS SE ČUVA NAJDRAGOCJENIJE BLAGO TOG DOBA FRANJEVAČKI MUZEJ – ČUVAR BLAGA BOSNE Epitet kraljevskog grada Jajce danas s ponosom nosi.

Uz muzejsku zbirku o srednjovjekovnoj Bosni u Franjevačkom muzeju pripremaju i vodič koji će govoriti o bogatoj povijesti srednjovjekovne Bosne i ljudima toga vremena.

Uspomena

na njega i danas je u narodu živa i mnogi hodočaste Kraljev grob na brdu Hum iznad Jajca, do kojeg vodi uređena planinarska staza.

VIRTUELNA ŠETNJA MUZEJOM Odajama Franjevačkog muzeja Jajce možete prošetati i virtuelno.

S našim zalaganjem nastavljamo i u narednom periodu. Sljedeća godina bit će novi izazov.” Adresa/Address: Ul. Nikole Šopa, 70101 Jajce Tel: 030/658-011 E-mail: opc.jajce@tel.net.ba

of Royal Treasures SYMBOLICALLY UNDERSTOOD, THE MOST PRECIOUS TREASURE FROM THE PERIOD OF THE KINGDOM OF BOSNIA IS KEPT IN THE VERY PLACE WHERE THE KINGDOM DREW ITS LAST BREATHS.

THE FRANCISCAN MUSEUM —THE GUARDIAN OF BOSNIA’S TREASURES Jajce carries the label of a royal city with pride today. Everything within the city is a testimony of that ancient period. In it you can still “see its king” or, rather, his earthly remains if you visit the Franciscan Museum in Jajce, which operates at the Franciscan Monastery of Saint Luke. The construction of the monastery began in 1877 and was completed in 1885. The museum at the monastery officially began operating in 1905 and was one of the most recognizable cultural institutions in Jajce until the early 1990s. In its rooms, the museum displays showpieces from prehistoric times till this day, including the sword of the Mošunj type from the 9th century BC as well as other items from the time of Roman emperors and deities 56

but also the period of Bosnian kings. The museum also preserves parts of the Church of St. Mary as well as Sultan Sulejman’s Mosque - Fethija. Three years ago, this faithful guardian of the true treasures of Bosnia and Herzegovina opened three new museum exhibits (ethnological, ar-

cheological, and sacral), and the construction of arranging the entire interior was completed in October this year. The setup of the interior design of the museum was awarded by the Collegium artisticum of Sarajevo and the Ljubljana Institute of Architecture, Big SEE.

DE ADMINISTRANDO IMPERIO The history of medieval Bosnia since Bosnia’s first mention in the 10th century in the work De administrando imperio (written by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus) has been told through the setup of this part of the museum. A kingdom emerged over time from the small country of Bosnia in the tenth century and came to an end in the middle of the fifteenth century (1463). In addition to the museum collection about medieval Bosnia,

EDIN HOZAN, the Mayor of the Municipality of Jajce

the Franciscan Museum is preparing a guide that will talk about the rich history of medieval Bosnia and its people of that time.

560 YEARS SINCE THE CORONATION OF THE LAST KING The most important part of the Franciscan Museum is definitely the King’s Room, a space where the sarcophagus of the last Bosnian king Stjepan Tomašević is located. Stjepan came to power after his father’s death on July 10, 1461. He was crowned king in Jajce in November of that same year in the Church of St. Mary. He was the only king of Bosnia crowned with a crown from the Vatican, wherefrom he sought support before the upcoming Ottoman invasion. He was executed in Jajce upon their arrival. His remains were found under a stećak and

excavated in 1888 by historian Ćiro Truhelka and have been preserved in the Franciscan monastery in Jajce ever since. The skeleton was removed from the grave and assembled in as much detail as possible before being stored in a glass coffin in the monastery church in Jajce, which is the most interesting location for visitors of the Franciscan Museum today. His memory is still alive today; many people go on a pilgrimage to the King’s tomb on the hill of Hum above Jajce by using a well-maintained hiking trail.

A VIRTUAL TOUR THROUGH THE MUSEUM You can also walk through the rooms of the Franciscan Museum Jajce virtually because of a new multimedia technology that presents the museum to viewers online and enables three-dimensional move-

“This year was much better than 2020. However, indicators show that our advancements this year could not compete with those of 2019, but they came very close. This could be seen and felt this summer in our city, which was visited by many foreign and domestic tourists. Therefore, we are sure that tourism and life as it was are returning to normal. We did everything possible to instigate development in that direction and have joined all existing programs in B&H in order to be recognized as a tourist destination. The organization of events has contributed to the return of tourists to Jajce, and we participated in the Sarajevo Film Festival, after which we were shown a number of films and two concerts. We will continue our efforts in the upcoming period. This next year will present a new challenge. ” ment of the recorded space, thus providing a real experience of the presented destination and content. Virtual tours through museums and galleries are a new approach to exhibiting heritage around the world, which became especially popular during the pandemic. 57

na Uni i Sani NOVI GRAD JE JEDAN OD NAJSTARIJIH KRAJIŠKIH GRADOVA. OSNOVAN 1280. GODINE, ČAR MU DAJU NJEGOVE PRIRODNE LJEPOTE I VRIJEDNI KULTURNO-HISTORIJSKI SPOMENICI

O

A u čast antifašističkoj borbi u Drugom svjetskom ratu Novi Grad je sačuvao monumentalni spomenik Majka partizanka Marijana Kockovića podignutog 1964. godine. Čine ga bronzana statua majke partizanke, 10 m dug kameni reljef s prikazom toka NOB-a i granitni kubus s uklesanim stihovima iz poeme Stojanka majka Knežpoljka Skendera Kulenovića.

SEOSKI TURIZAM Uz prirodne ljepote, kulturu i historiju koju može ponuditi posjetiocima grada, brojni entuzijasti daju izuzetan pionirski doprinos razvoju seoskog turizma u Novom Gradu.

60

NOVI GRAD IS ONE OF THE OLDEST TOWNS IN KRAJINA. IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1280, AND ITS NATURAL BEAUTY AND VALUABLE CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL MONUMENTS GIVE IT ITS CHARM.

fragrant linden trees. Novski Kej started being built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it received its more current appearance in 1985 in the former state.

Right along the shores of the emerald Una river to the mouth of the Sana river, where it sprang, lies perhaps the biggest attraction of one of the oldest Krajina towns, the famous Kej—a three kilometer long, stone-walled quayside, with an alley of shady chestnuts and

The Una river flows through the Novi Grad municipality for 35 km of its total length of 207 km. Tourists are especially interested in accommodation facilities along this beautiful river, which with its temperature of 22°C during the summer is very pleasant and refreshing in Novi Grad.

In addition to the international event Una regata, which takes place from Blatna to Novi Grad, and from Novi Grad to Hrvatska Kostajnica, the tourist content is enriched with two more tempting activities—sailing through Una’s more mild currents through the Novi Grad municipality with mandatory stops and photos at numerous waterfalls, tufa, Una’s islands, and a full day worth of rafting down the Una river. 61

CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL SIGHTS The founding of Novi Grad dates back to 1280. Archaeological sites in the village of Donji Rakani and in the valley of the river Japra testify that its wider area was inhabited in ancient times. It is recognizable by its cultural and historical sights, primarily by its Old Town Hall (Stara gradska vijećnica), which was built in 1888 in the pseudo-Moorish style as a typical example of its era, i.e., the period of Austro-Hungarian occupation in this area. Although relatively small in size, thanks to its decorativeness and impressiveness, it is considered one of the most harmonious buildings in the 62

entire territory of B&H. The second most important cultural and historical monument is the National Library of Novi Grad built in 1895, which in addition to its daily routines organizes literary evenings, book promotions, exhibitions dedicated to famous people, and various cultural events in the city. Another national monument of B&H, the Legat Stojana Ćelića, is of great importance for the culture of the city. It can be seen in the city gallery (Gradska galerija), and consists of 41 works: 4 oil canvas paintings, 6 drawings, and 31 graphics pieces. And in honor of the anti-fascist struggle in the Second World War, Novi Grad has preserved the monu-

ment Majka partizanka made by Marijan Kocković and erected in 1964. It is a bronze statue of a partisan mother consisting of a 10-meter long stone surface depicting the course of the National Liberation War and a granite cube with engraved verses from the poem Stojanka majka Knežpoljka by Skender Kulenović.

RURAL TOURISM In addition to Novi Grad’s natural beauty, culture, and history that can be offered to visitors of the city, many enthusiasts make an outstanding pioneering contribution to the development of rural tourism in Novi Grad. The Agricultural Cooperative “Agrojapra” from Donji Agići, which works in conjunction with individual rural households, is

leading the way with its attempts. Founded after the Second World War, Agrojapra offers a preserved natural ambience and local quality cuisine with old traditional specialties; walks through the hilly and mountainous areas of Podgrmeč; the activity of picking herbs and mushrooms; a tour of the mill with the participation of flour milling; the tasting of cold-pressed sunflower oil, salad oil, virgin pumpkin seed oil, and various types of dried fruit; fishing on the Japra river; as well as a visit to the house of Branko Ćopić in Hašani... There is also a classroom for lifelong learning, an ethno-museum exhibition, and an exhibition about cooperatives in the Japra valley.

Pioneering steps in the development of rural tourism are being made in the valley of the river Japra and around the Sports and Recreation Center Lješljani, which is also an interesting destination. The thermal mineral spring Lješljani, where the center was built, is located some 20 km from Novi Grad. The water there belongs to the group of sodium chloride, hydro-carbonated, hypothermal, highly alkaline waters, and the current spring has a temperature of 31 to 35°C. The healing properties of the Lješljani spa have been talked about since the Roman Empire, and the evidence of its first use dates back to 1878, when the Austro-Hungarians first tested this

water in Vienna. Folk legends have also been recorded. One notable story is about a sick horse and a poor peasant, who, unable to find a cure for his horse, left it with great sorrow at the mercy of the forests of Potkozarje. The wandering horse came across a source of water from Lješljani, and after a while, it returned to its master alive and well. There are a number of reasons why you will be especially charmed by your visits to the smaller cities. They do not have many sights like the metropolises, but they will give you the opportunity to enjoy its stories more and feel the spirit of the locals, who, like those in Novi Grad, always welcome their visitors with open arms. 63

“U međuvremenu sam zavoljela plivanje, svoje novo društvo, trenere i klub.

to spend a lot of time out of town preparing to compete. But there’s a certain charm to it, and it’s an additional motive for me to perform as best as I can.”

AN A-STUDENT

L

ana Pudar was five years old when she started taking swimming lessons. Today she is 15 and is already accomplished in her own right. This year alone, she has achieved a number of outstanding results. She was the youngest B&H competitor at the Tokyo Olympics placing nineteenth. She was announced the champion in the 100-metre butterfly final at the European Junior Championships in Rome, and she also won silver in the 50 fly and 200 fly. This was followed by a historic step forward for B&H at the World Cup in Kazan, where Lana earned a bronze medal in the 100 fly with a time of 57.39, which is the first such accomplishment for the country in a competition of this rank.

A PATH PAVED WITH MASSIVE SACRIFICE We found Lana preparing for the senior World Championships in Abu Dhabi, and talked before the big competition where she placed third in the final race winning a historic bronze medal. 68

She began her swimming career in “Orka” Water Sport Club in Mostar. Just a few days after her parents enrolled her in swim school so she could learn to swim, the coaches called them to let them know that they planned to enrol Lana in swim club. “In the meantime, I fell in love with swimming, the new people I’m spending time with, the coaches and the club. It all began quite spontaneously. I can’t complain, I certainly wasn’t wrong to take up swimming,” says Lana, who looks up to her swimming role model Sarah Sjöström, a multiple Olympic and World Champion and record-holder. “Achieving great results in any sphere of life, including sports, requires a great deal of sacrifice. The fact that there aren’t enough Olympic swimming pools is the biggest problem for the development of swimming in our country. I’d definitely make much more progress if an Olympic swimming pool were built in Mostar and if I wasn’t forced

Despite her talent and results, school comes first for Lana. She attends the first grade of the Second Secondary Grammar School in Mostar. Mathematics is her favourite subject, and when she is not tied up with her swimming commitments she spends a lot of time practicing it. Lana has always had straight As. She spends nearly five hours every day in the pool, goes to the gym three times a week, and travels extensively, but with good organisation, support from parents, coaches and school, she maintains balance.

You Go, Girl! “My father told me to never quit even in the face of obstacles, to persist and persevere in whatever I do and regardless of what it’s about” Her father Velibor Pudar, who used to be the goalkeeper of Football Club Velež, offers Lana guidance with his sports advice when she needs it. “My father told me to never quit even in the face of obstacles, to persist and persevere in whatever I do and regardless of what it’s about,” Lana points out as she harbours a desire to win a gold medal for herself and for Bosnia and Herzegovina from some the largest championships in the world. “It’s not going to be easy at all, but I believe that with dedicated and persistent work nothing is impossible,” she says in the end.

Nature in Our Eyes With each step one takes in nature, one gets much more than one seeks, especially if one allows oneself to feel and immerse oneself in it. You stopped and discovered the art of nature, you breathed clean air high above the valleys, listened to the birds, caressed the deer in the embrace of the forest, drank tea in the mountains, and then you went back home sensing that your soul was empowered. The vision of nature you captured in photos was awarded in the Find Your Nature competition organised by Podravka BiH, a partner of Furaj.ba magazine, and we present you some of the most beautiful scenes. KRISTIJAN ILIČIĆ, travel bloger i osnivač agencije Nomadik Travel

Toliko je dobrote u svijetu,

u srcima ljudi! “PUTOVANJIMA SAM RAZBIO SVE PREDRASUDE O NAMA POSVE STRANIM PODNEBLJIMA, KULTURAMA, OBIČAJIMA” Razgovarala: Elma Zećo / Foto: Privatni album

J

mediji. Rado Vas ljudi prate.

VIŠE OD 300 DANA NA PUTU Vi ste imali i opasnih putovanja.

I sve to morate izdržati.

- U Venecueli s grupom koju vodi

moja agencija Nomadik Travel.

Također, putovanje do Angel Fallsa u Venecueli do jučer je bilo gotovo nemoguće organizovati, a mi smo upravo sada s našom prvom grupom ovdje.

Postajemo frustrirani i nesretni. Upravo u putovanjima i upoznavanju svijeta iza našeg ograničenog horizonta vidim izlaz u bolji svijet.

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

KRISTIJAN ILIČIĆ, a travel blogger and the founder of travel agency Nomadik Travel

There’s So Much Kindness in This World,

in People’s Hear ts!

“THROUGH MY TRAVELS I WAS ABLE TO ERASE ALL THE PREJUDICES WE HAVE ABOUT OTHER LANDS, CULTURES, AND CUSTOMS” Interviewed by: Elma Zećo / Photo: Private Album

O

ne trip to Asia before starting university was enough for Kristijan Iličić to realise that travelling is what he is most interested in. Before becoming a world traveller and travel writer, he worked for years at a publishing house in Zagreb, but once he opened the doors of the world and had a taste of foreign lands, and by that time he had travelled across Southeast Asia, had gone off on a road trip across the United States, and had explored the African states that changed his life, he could no longer just go to work, sit in an office, and spend precious time on corporate matters. He figured out that he would never be able travel the world this way and decided to open a new chapter in his life.

GETTING ENGAGED IN THE SEYCHELLES You became the most famous tra‑ vel blogger in the region after you threw a birthday surprise for your girlfriend Andrea in America a few years ago, flying 10,000 km on that occasion. Both foreign and regional media wrote storied about it. People 84

are happy to follow you. What is the secret of your success? - That just might be it—what you said. Nothing’s hard for me to do. I do it from the heart and without faking it. I’d drive twice as many kilometres for Andrea, she is very important to me and I never thought that I shouldn’t do what I did. I just sought a way to do it. As for my stories, which people love to watch, I post raw material, so whoever likes it, they’re welcome to watch. I don’t feel like editing video stories. I always speak my mind, present things as they are—if I think something is beautiful and touching or if I don’t like it and it makes me angry, I say so. I don’t hide anything. I’m honest. I don’t try to mystify things. When I was in Varanasi where dead bodies were being burnt, I wasn’t retelling the mystical history of India, I was showing a man drying wet trousers next to a funeral pyre where the body of the deceased was burning. What do you remember about the first location you headed out to? - Andrea and I went to Madagascar

and spent 20 wonderful days exploring all parts of the island. Travelling through Madagascar turned out to be a real adventure, driving on the worst roads in the world, traveling without any kind of plan. We then flew to the Seychelles. I chose the Seychelles because I always knew that one day, if I found the right girl, I’d get engaged in the Seychelles. I did find her, so I remember the Seychelles because that’s where Andrea and I got engaged. You’ve travelled to a lot of places, more than a hundred. What’s the criteria for adding countries to your travel list? - I set myself the goal to visit every country in the world, so for the time being the criterion is to visit the countries I haven’t been to before. Of course, at times I’m still quite happy to return to places that have left a strong mark me or impressed me in one way or another. That’s why I always go to Thailand and Ethiopia again and again, and I believe that I’ll make a road trip around the USA at least a few more times.

85

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

- I’d like to give you a smart answer, but I often don’t seem to know how to recognise that I’m under stress. I do know how I feel when I get an adrenaline rush, when I am overjoyed because I’ve achieved something that was difficult, even dangerous, but I don’t know how to recognise the signs of stress affecting me emotionally and physically. I can say that I felt a little worried for my own safety when we passed the Taliban checkpoints, but I also laughed uncontrollably. That’s basically how I put up with. What experience do you bring from travelling during the pandemic, how many trips are behind you, and how much more expensive has travelling become?

Whose customs, culture and traditions have impressed you in particular? - It might be because we are all somehow full of prejudice against or fearful of them, or it might be because it was all so very strange and unusual to me, but I was most impressed by the countries of the Middle East, Afghanistan and Yemen. I feel that a lot of our culture, our ancient past, is buried there. Everything is quite unexplored, mystical. These are the routes that Alexander the Great rode along. Many ancient buildings have been preserved and many testimonies of our common past have been kept there. I find 86

the mismatch between what I saw in those locations and what we see in the media rather appalling. The situation in Afghanistan right now is ghastly. I was fortunate enough to see Afghanistan before the new situation arose.

MORE THAN 300 DAYS ON THE ROAD You have also made some dangerous journeys. You have slept on the Nyiragongo volcano in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ahead of an eruption, passed through danger zones without military escorts... How do you typically respond to stress?

- Since the outbreak of the pandemic, I’ve travelled around Turkey, Cyprus, Malta, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central America, Yemen, a good part of Africa... I was on the road for a long time with a short break during the summer. Some destinations were cheaper because there were no tourists, while some tours were at half price. Overall, however, travel has become much more expensive. You spend a small fortune just on getting tested for Covid-19. It was a substantial cost for me in particular because I travelled around many countries where people thought that they could earn a handy extra income through such testing. Sometimes the testing took on a level of unreasonable and total insanity. And, you’ve got to endure it all. In addition, it’s now risky to travel if you go to just one place, and your plan was to have a two-week holiday, for instance. It can happen that you get to a country which has just imposed a lockdown so you aren’t allowed to go anywhere. A total failure. For any booking you make, you must pay for cancellati-

on insurance. You have to constantly monitor the situation on the ground. Travelling has become complicated, but not impossible. And you just have to make more of an effort than before. Instead of wasting time on why all of this has befallen us or immersing ourselves in conspiracy theories, it’s better to come up with a route, finish planning, and get on the road. It is what it is.

now go on such an adventure through our agency, because it’s run by two extremely experienced world travellers, my brother and I, who know exactly what they’re doing. We listen to people who follow us, who want adventure, so we don’t impo-

- Sometimes more than 300. This year I spent just a month in the vicinity of Zagreb, even though I wasn’t based there, and also wanderrd around the neighbouring countries. I spent less than two months at home. - In Venezuela with a group of travellers. We’re here with my travel agency Nomadik Travel.

AN ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME You have used your tourist expe‑ rience to establish an adventure travel agency called Nomadik Travel in Zagreb. Who is your target au‑ dience? - Most people think that I’m doing something that’s totally unattainable and that the destinations I go to are beyond their reach. Even those who’ve got the money to go to some of the more high-end destinations don’t actually travel there because they’ve got no clue where to start. That’s where my agency comes in: it takes on all these ‘very complicated’ things, from writing invitation letters, obtaining permits and visas, developing routes, and making arrangements with local people. Anyone who’s inclined to what I’d call an adventure of a lifetime can

I use my personal experience to show people that some things are worth the effort, that you need to step out of your comfort zone, physically and mentally, and that, at times, you simply need to invest a lot of money to make a dream come true. How much have you changed as a person travelling the world, and what are the most important things you have gained?

How many days a year do you spend travelling?

Where are you right now?

adventure of a lifetime and see the world in all its beauty.

“I USE MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TO SHOW PEOPLE THAT SOME THINGS ARE WORTH THE EFFORT, THAT YOU NEED TO STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE, PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY, AND THAT, AT TIMES, YOU SIMPLY NEED TO INVEST A LOT OF MONEY TO MAKE A DREAM COME TRUE” se well-trodden, traditional routes on people; instead, we lead people where they themselves want to go. For example, a New Year’s trip to Thailand is probably offered by some other agencies, but we’re the only ones offering the option to stay much longer on Thailand’s beautiful beaches. Also, only until recently it was nearly impossible to organise a trip to Angel Falls in Venezuela, and yet, we’re in Venezuela right now with our first group. We’re determined to help other people go on an

- The most important thing I’ve gained from my travels is that people will be people regardless of the location. There’s no us and them; there are only good and bad people—and the world is full of them. Through my travels I was able to erase all the prejudices we have about other lands, cultures, and customs. I shattered all my fears and learned that the world could be a perfect place to live if we didn’t allow a minority acting in their own selfish self-interests govern the silent majority. I came across, for the most part, very kind-hearted, loving and accommodating people. There’s so much kindness in this world, in people’s hearts! By living in one corner of the planet Earth we remain locked in our little box and we see threats and problems everywhere. We become frustrated and unhappy. I often see it in some of the comments I get on my posts. People who’ve never left their garden have got an opinion about everything. Travelling enriches and ennobles you, it adds quality to and brings good people into your life. It allows you to learn in a way you’d never be able to learn if you just sat at home all the time. I believe that travelling and getting to know the world beyond our limited horizon is the way out into a better world. 87

HOTEL ZOKU JE AMSTERDAMSKI PIONIR HIBRIDNE HOME-OFFICE FILOZOFIJE S HOTELSKIM USLUGAMA. POSEBNO JE ZANIMLJIV RASTUĆOJ POPULACIJI POSLOVNIH PROFESIONALACA, RADNICIMA KOJI NISU DUŽNI DA FIZIČKI PRISUSTVUJU NA RADNOM MJESTU I DIGITALNIM NOMADIMA

S

vojim otvaranjem 2016. godine u Amsterdamu, hotel Zoku je s hibridnim konceptom kućnog ureda i nagrađivanim dizajnom Zoku Lofta uvrstio posve novu kategoriju u hotelsku industriju.

Krasi ga živahni društveni prostor i jedinstvena zajednica. 89

ZOKU HOTEL IS THE AMSTERDAM-BASED PIONEER OF THE HOME OFFICE HYBRID PHILOSOPHY WITH THE SERVICES OF A HOTEL. IT IS PARTICULARLY APPEALING TO THE GROWING POPULATION OF GLOBETROTTING PROFESSIONALS, REMOTE WORKERS, AND DIGITAL NOMADS

Moving far beyond the standard hotel offer, Zoku facilitates living and working internationally for the growing population of globetrotting professionals, remote workers, and digital nomads.

L

aunched in Amsterdam in 2016, Zoku Hotel created a new category in the hotel industry: a home-office hybrid concept and awardwinning Zoku Loft design.

Zoku Loft is smart, private, and customisable. It comes with all the necessary residential and business facilities, and residents can choose pieces of art from the hotel’s own collection to personalise the walls. A four-person kitchen table is the focal point of each room—not the bed, which is usually the case in hotels. It allows residents to invite friends or colleagues over.

ONE OF 25 COOLEST HOTELS IN THE WORLD Created by Dutch entrepreneurs Hans Meyer and Marc Jongerius,

Zoku was named after the Japanese word for family, tribe or clan. It achieved B Corp certification in 2018, becoming one of the few hospitality brands in the world to receive this recognition. From Amsterdam, Zoku expanded during the pandemic with new locations now open in Copenhagen and Vienna. It was also named one of 25 coolest hotels in the world by Forbes.

Zoku’s bold concept has won numerous awards and received rave reviews from guests. It has lively social spaces and a unique community structure. Its social spaces offer a warm welcome, the Kindred Spirits bar, a cosy living room, Living Kitchen rooftop restaurant, Coworking Spaces, Green Spaces, and a lot of terraces for residents to enjoy! The open-plan communal living design facilitates creating genuine connections among residents, WorkZoku members, and locals.

Zoku provides a home base for holiday and business travellers who want to live (and work) in a city anywhere from a few days to a few months. It is a hybrid between a home and an office with hotel services, and it is a relaxed place to live, work, and socialise with like-minded people while getting wired into the city.

Sustainability within Zoku goes well beyond a proper insulated building, LED lighting, and energy saving systems like heat recovery and intelligent building management systems. Zoku is proud to call itself a Green Key Gold certified hotel. Its founders believe that this standard should be set for any new place opening up in town. 91

Hoteli

– Hotel Mepas (4 sobe) u Mostaru;

Tailored to Suit Everyone THE MARKET FOR ACCESSIBLE TOURISM IS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING, BUT STILL THE LEAST DEVELOPED ONE

R

egardless of whether it involves people with a disability—hearing, vision or mobility impairments, people with temporary injuries, elderly parents in a wheelchair due to hip or knee injury, or people with allergies, accessibility is a topic that affects a massive number of people at one age or another.

ACCESSIBILITY AS A STANDARD The World Tourism Organisation has identified the accessible tourism market as one of the fastest growing and yet the least developed one. Despite the upward trend, the hotel and hospitality industry has largely overlooked the importance of accessibility. That is the reason why the aim of the first worldwide standard on accessible tourism for all—ISO 21902:2021 Tourism and related services / Accessible tourism for all / Requirements and recommendations—was to ensure equal access and enjoyment of tourism by the widest range of people of all ages and abilities. It can be achieved by following guidelines on the key aspects of policy making, strategy, infrastructure, products and services. The standard is addressed to all stakeholders involved in the tourism supply chain, and its application at local, regional, national and international levels will directly contribute to the achievement of important goals of sustainable development such as decent work for all, sustainable economic growth, and the reduction of inequalities.

95

ODRŽIVI RAZVOJ / SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

UNIFY THE PRACTICE Intensive discussions are underway on accessibility features for people with permanent disability or reduced mobility as well as blind and partially sighted people. Unlike the US, where everything is clearly defined by The Americans with Disabilities Act, practices in the provision of accessible facilities and services in Europe vary largely.

Grand Hotel, Neum

SCANDIC HOTEL CHAIN Since there is not much awareness about the importance of accessibility, a large number of hotels is not accessible, and those that are view accessibility more in terms of compliance rather than benefit, so they do not promote their accessible features enough. Scandic Hotels is one of the few positive examples in this regard. Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, and operating a network of about 280 hotels with 58,000 hotel rooms, it is the first hotel chain in the world to have developed an accessibility standard that ensures that all Scandic hotels are accessible to everyone. The standard covers 159 points, 105 of which are mandatory at all hotels. At newly built Scandic hotels or those that need to be refurbished, all 159 points apply. The standard encompasses everything offered by the hotel, from car park to allergy-friendly rooms. These rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art air purifiers, mattresses, pillows, and bed linen. Special cleaning techniques are used to remove harmful irritants such as germs, airborne mould, and house dust mites. 96

This approach creates an environment that helps people with allergies and asthma enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep away from home. If we consider that hotel guests spend 8-10 hours in their hotel room on average, which exposes them to new environmental conditions that could set off symptoms, rooms where guests can breathe clean air significantly reduce the possibility of discomfort. For business travellers, a good night’s sleep can mean the difference between a great and an average meeting; for families and holidaymakers it means worryfree exploration of new places. That is why people with allergies look for hotels that meet the needs of travellers with allergies when planning a trip.

When it comes to physical disability, emphasis is placed on the following accessibility features: – a room without thresholds; – height-adjustable beds; – adjustable bathroom equipment (position of the sink, shower, and handles) and accessories (towels, soap dispensers, etc.) that allow easy access for wheelchair users; – slip-resistant flooring solutions. To improve accessibility when it comes to sensory impairments, the hotel industry should take into account the following recommendations: – install indirect lighting and dimmers; – install curtains to control sunlight; – use high colour contrast in the bedroom and in the bathroom (for instance, an all-white bathroom is Hotel Melain, Tuzla

very difficult to use); – avoid sharp objects or furniture, i.e. use soft materials and furniture with no sharp edges; – place the coffee and tea set on the desk, not in the room cabinet; – offer a braille floor plan; – offer a braille emergency plan and other braille material; – the room number should be clearly marked (on the door or the in the hallway in braille using high contrast colours and big size font); – stair bannisters should be marked at the beginning and the end so people can feel it; – if possible, stairs should be marked on every step; – in the lift the menu on the display it is recommended to have braille or a voice indication system.

THE SITUATION IN B&H Available information indicates that no comprehensive research on hotel accessibility has been conducted in B&H. However, many hotels in B&H are accessible to people who are not able to move, but they do not have accessible rooms. These are some of the hotels with accessible rooms:

– Hotels Europa (2 rooms), Holiday (4 rooms), Hollywood (11) and Terme (most rooms) in Sarajevo; – Hotels Herceg (2 rooms) and Villa Regina (2 rooms) in Međugorje; – Hotel Mepas (4 rooms) in Mostar; – Hotel Grand (7 rooms) in Neum; – Hotel Mellain (8 rooms) in Tuzla – Hotel Courtyard by Marriott (2 rooms) in Banjaluka; – Hotel Bank (1 room) in Kiseljak. Hotel Courtyard by Marriott, Banjaluka

To accommodate guests with hearing impairments, rooms should be equipped with visual alarms and visual alerting systems, vibrating alarm clocks, amplified telephones, and wireless TV headphones alarms for hearing impaired. 97

PUTOVANJE / TRAVEL

LUKA ROTTERDAMA BAZA SVJETSKIH KOMPANIJA I SVEUČILIŠTA U ovom dinamičnom lučkom gradu živi više od 170 nacionalnosti i kulturnih zajednica, dok 50% stanovništva čine Nizozemci.

CUBE HOUSES

DE MARKTHAL

ERASMUS MOST

102

WILLEMS MOST Zvanično Willemsbrug, ovaj prekrasni crveni most još je jedan od simbola Rotterdama. Dug je 318 metara, a širok 33 metra. Posebno

je iskustvo šetati mostom noću i uhvatiti pogledom horizont Rotterdama, uključujući i most Erasmus.

THE BASE OF WORLD COMPANIES AND UNIVERSITIES More than 170 nationalities and cultural communities live in this dynamic port city, while 50% of the population are Dutch. It is internationally recognized as the gateway to Europe, whose port is the central hub of the largest European maritime cluster. Rotterdam never fails to impress at every turn with its architecture, museums, art, restaurants, and various foods of fantastic taste. As a base for large multinational companies and world-renowned universities such as Erasmus University, Willem de Kooning Academy, and Codarts, it attracts a large international and expat community. The center of the city was heavily bombed in the Nazi air attack of 1940. In 15 minutes, almost the entire center disappeared. 24,000 houses, 32 churches, and 2 synagogues were destroyed; close to 900 people lost their lives; and about 80,000 were left homeless. When the center began to be rebuilt after World War II, the city of Rotterdam did not want to renew the demolished buildings but decided to build from the ground up. Therefore, there are not many typical Dutch bu104

Many call the Netherlands “Holland,” because the official name of the country has not yet fully come to life among the people. The Dutch have decided to stop using the name “Holland” since 1 January 2020 and to use only the name “The Netherlands” for their country. The geographical concept of “Holland” is narrower than “The Netherlands” and covers the area of two provinces out of the 12 that exist. It is home to the three largest Dutch cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague. ildings located in the city. It is adorned with modern architecture, and thanks to 352 skyscrapers, among which is the Maastoren with its 165 meters as the highest in the Netherlands and the Benelux, Rotterdam is also called the Manhattan on the Maas.

Rotterdam is quite easy to reach from any major city in the Netherlands. It is well connected by train with Antwerp, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, etc... It is accessible by car and public transport such as the metro, buses, and trams.

THE PORT OF ROTTERDAM It is an amazing experience to visit the port and try to understand its importance in the country’s economy. Boat tours are a great way to see the port and its huge cargo ships, large number of docks, warehouses, and shipyards that delight with their sizes and labor, reminiscent of industrial wonders. It is also necessary to visit the overseas ship SS Rotterdam and the Maritime Museum, where you can access old ships and explore their interior. The museum is located in the center of Rotterdam.

THE OLD HARBOR The Old Harbor (Oude Haven) is the oldest city port. There are many restaurants and terraces overlooking the historic ships and the Witte Huis, which was built in 1898 and was the first skyscraper in Europe. Long considered the tallest building in the Netherlands, the Witte Huis is one of the few to have survived the

1940 bombing of Rotterdam. Only the bullet holes in the facade of the building are a reminder of this dark chapter in the city’s history.

CUBE HOUSES In the very center of Rotterdam, there are famous yellow square houses called Cube Houses. Although it is difficult to see at a first glance, these houses are residential buildings designed to resemble trees in the forest. The cubes are tilted and divided into three levels, which makes you wonder how practical it is to live here, how people move into these buildings, and what kind of furniture the tenants have considering the strange corners of the walls and windows. That is why it is possible to visit Show-Cube, a fully customized square house that serves as a museum.

DE MARKTHAL With over 178 cultures in the city, Rotterdam is a true gourmet destination. Restaurants of almost all

foreign cuisines are represented, and many of them are vegan and halal. For all those who love good food, the right place to visit is De Markthal, a market with a large number of stands and restaurants with fresh food. The building is in the shape of a dome and represents a real work of art – the walls and ceiling are decorated with giant fruits, flowers, and insects. Many of the stands have a seating area upstairs, so you can watch the interior from above but also from the square in front.

THE ERASMUS BRIDGE The second largest bridge in the Netherlands was nicknamed “The Swan” because of its large upright mast reminiscent of a swan’s neck. At its center is a bascule that allows larger ships to pass. The bridge has several traffic lanes for vehicles, trams, bicycle paths, and sidewalks for pedestrians.

WILLEMS BRIDGE Officially called Willemsbrug, this beautiful red bridge is another symbol of Rotterdam. It is 318 meters long and 33 meters wide. It is quite a unique experience to walk across the bridge at night and catch a glimpse of the Rotterdam skyline, including the Erasmus Bridge.

DE ROTTERDAM Right next to the Erasmus Bridge is the De Rotterdam building, a complex of three interconnected towers also called the vertical city. It was named after the famous SS Rotterdam ship, which transported Dutch migrants to America at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries. It has 45 floors, making it the fifth tallest building in the Netherlands (the first four are also located in Rotterdam).

HOTEL NEW YORK Hotel New York, another World War II survivor, is the former headquarters of Holland America Line, wherefrom 105

The train station is another building with unique and modern architecture. The building has a triangular shape, and on the roof area of 10,000 m2, there are 3,000 solar panels that provide solar energy for elevators, escalators, and lights. Among other things, the cattle in the port are fed grain from a local brewery, grass from Rotterdam’s football and golf courses, as well as leftovers from local restaurants. A robot is responsible for milking the cattle, while the milk is processed on the spot immediately. Electric vehicles are used for transport, and the farm produces its own electricity using floating solar panels while it provides fresh water through an integrated rainwater collection and purification system. The obtained cow manure is used to create natural fertilizer. serving a part of its history. The interior is also impressive. Over 100,000 passengers pass through the station doors every day and have at their disposal restaurants and cafeterias where they can wait for trains with lunch and drinks. There is a huge parking lot located below the station for 5190 bicycles.

STARA KINESKA POSLOVICA KAŽE: “ČAJ SE PIJE KAKO BI SE ZABORAVILA BUKA SVIJETA”. OKUS TOG TRENUTKA U KOJEM SE OKREĆEMO PREMA SEBI DODATNO ĆE IZOŠTRITI PRHKO ZADOVOLJSTVO KAO ZIMSKI NAGOVJEŠTAJ

HUSARSKI KOLAČIĆI

Priprema

Sastojci:

Opcionalno:

• Dolcela šećer u prahu

SAVJET U tijesto možete dodati i malo limunove korice, ili Dolcela limun šećer. Prije dekorisanja džemom, kolačiće pospite šećerom u prahu.

TIP THERE IS AN OLD CHINESE SAYING THAT GOES: “ONE DRINKS TEA TO FORGET THE WORLD’S NOISE.” THE TASTE OF THE MOMENT WE ALLOW OURSELVES TO CONNECT WITH OUR INNER BEING BECOMES CLEARER AS WE NIBBLE A SHORTCRUST SWEET PASTRY WHICH GIVES US HINTS THAT WINTER IS NEAR.

JAM THUMBPRINTS Ingredients:

• Dolcela mixture for jam thumbprints • -60 g finely ground nuts (almond, hazelnut or walnut) • -100 g cold butter • -50 ml water

Optional:

• Dolcela granulated sugar

Directions Pour the dough mixture in a deep bowl and add 60 g of your favourite ground nuts. Dolcela mixture goes best with almonds, hazelnuts or walnuts. Then also add 100 g of cold butter cut into cubes or slices and 50 ml of room temperature water.

You can also add some lemon peel or Dolcela lemon sugar in the dough. Before decorating them with jam, sprinkle the biscuits with powdered sugar.

Knead dough with your hands until mixture forms a shortcrust dough. It will take several minutes to mix to a smooth dough, but you can use a dough mixer if you want. Turn your oven on to 180°C without the fan or 160°C with the fan. Take small amounts of dough and shape into little walnut sized balls. Depending on the amount of ingredients you used, you will get 40-45 balls. Place the balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper leaving enough of room for the dough to rise during baking. Use your thumb or the rounded back of a wooden spoon to gently press the centre of each biscuit. Bake the biscuits for 12 minutes. Remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool. Fill the centres with jam to taste. You can always decide to use chocolate instead, Lino Lada or melted chocolate.
