h c r a e s e R ys… Sa

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)*

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL): is a process that helps children acquire skills for life. These skills include: developing positive relationships, behaving ethically, and handling challenging situations.*** The goal of SEL is to help children recognize and manage emotions, think about their feelings and actions, and regulate their behavior based on thoughtful decision making.**

SEL has 5 Competencie

1. Self Awareness: 1) identify ones

emotions. 2) maintain self-con dence and self-ef cacy.

2. Self Management: 1) regulate

emotions. 2) cope with stress. 3) mange impulses. 4) set goals.

3. Social Awareness: 1) understand social cues. 2) empathy. 3) understand cultural norms.

4. Relationship Skills: 1) establish and

maintain relationships. 2) resolve con ict. 3) resist peer pressure. 4) work cooperatively

5. Responsible Decision Making: 1)

accurately identify and evaluate problems. 2) make decisions based on ethical and social norms. 3) consider context when decision making.

SEL interventions help to develop positive relationships, ethical behavior, and how to handle challenging situations e ectively. Strategies that foster SEL help children to recognize and manage emotions, think about their feelings and how they should act, and regulate behavior based on thoughtful decision making skills.***

HOW TO PLAY AND USE SCENARIO CARDS Directions: 1. Determine how you will use these cards: In a receptive matching game? In a role-play guessing game? In discussions to enhance perspective-taking skills? 2. Remember that some scenarios may match more than one emotion! 3. Determine how many cards to present and to solve at once based on the needs of your client. 4. Increase the number of emotions and scenarios over time as clients demonstrate increased independence.

Take it one step further! Use the dry erase markers to color the emotion cards.

🖍

Associating a color with a word or a feeling- helps a person to understand their emotions, process feelings, and create balance in their left and right side of the brain. Our emotions and the process in which we understand these feelings is a changing and fluid process. Allow your clients to change the color of an emotion or re-color the cards each session or every-so-often :)

Introspection Stix! Introspection is the examination of one’s own mental and emotional processes. The best way to know about one’s self is to ask questions and think inwardly. This is not always an easy skill, and it takes some practice for everyone. Thats why we created Introspection Stix! The practice of introspection helps an individual gain insight into themselves, and as a result, they are better able to interpret and decode the emotions of others during communication and interactions. This is especially helpful for anyone who wants to improve their self awareness, socialization skills, and self-regulation skills.

How to Play Use the Introspection Stix one on one, in a group, or among family members to improve socialization, connection, and insight and awareness into one's own beliefs, thoughts, and feelings. Pull one stix and read the question to another, or answer it for yourself. You can even have everyone go around the table and answer the same or different stix. Selecting assessments to help guide invention is key for intervention effectiveness. Both of these assessments can help the therapist and the individual gain knowledge into which areas need improvement. This approach is clientcentered, and it can help to identify which areas the client nds meaningful. The UCC and the Interception Assessment Forms can be found at https:// www.AAPCautismbooks.c om/
