Babies move certain ways to develop neurological skills.

They start these movements in the womb.

Reflexes are the foundation for basically everything humans do. Such as, surviving, growing, walking, learning, talking, processing, reading, and more. Some reflexes come and go, and others develop into another reflex.

These movements are called primitive reflexes.

When these reflexes do not integrate or develop fully in a natural progression, then they end up causing a reflex to become stuck. This results in the a break in connection between the body and the brain.

Children with ADHD, dyslexia, and sensory processing difficulties usually have three main problems. As you read more, you might identify a a lot of problems or concerns! That is okay- most behaviors, sensory difficulties, and motor problems are caused by stuck reflexes. Unsticking the reflexes will resolve a lot of problems.

Each reflex has a purpose. If the reflex stays active in the body past its purpose, then it has reached the point where it is creating problems, and that’s why I like to say that the reflex is stuck.

Let’s take a look at some of the problems that reflexes cause when they are stuck.

The Reason:

The Cry (a.k.a.Moro) reflex is stuck.

The 4-1-1 (information) on the Cry Reflex:

The first reflex to develop in the womb is called the withdrawal reflex. This keeps the baby safe while it is growing and developing in the womb. It will move or pull away from unknown structures like the umbilical cord. Once the baby becomes used to the dierent structures in the womb, this reflex becomes integrated (goes away) and it transforms into the Moro reflex (the next level of protection). We all need the cry reflex, it is only when the reflex is stuck that it becomes a problem.

Often providing different sensory experiences will soothe them… Swaddle, rocking, music, holding, sucking…Finding the right experience is the biggest challenge for parents of a child with an overactive crying or moro reflex. It will seem like nothing works to help them stop crying.

Doing reflex exercises can help reset the connection and create a clear pathway and stop endless crying.

By 6 months old, this reflex should no longer be needed, and transform into what adults have which is the “fight or flight” reflex. #upgraded. If your child is colic, crying, and fussy after 6 months old, then their cry reflex needs repair!

The child with a stuck cry reflex will cover their ears at birthday parties and dislike hearing the Happy Birthday song!

A stuck cry reflex can be associated with an inflamed vagus nerve, this is the longest nerve in the body and it runs from the ear all the way to the lower abdomen.

Children who are anxious, upset, and/or overwhelmed covers their ears not only to protect from sound, but to calm their vagus nerve.

Ever notice that the happy birthday song has that one note that everyone sings off key? You can almost anticipate it how off key sounding it will be.

If the cry reflex is stuck, you cannot use your mind to rationalize that the song will be over in 30 seconds.

Also, if we want to get real technical- one of the major musical notes in the happy birthday song is a high G. The G note corresponds with the first chakra (root) in the body. Often, the this chakra is imbalanced in children who have ADHD, anxiety, fear, and controlling behaviors.

The Grasp Reflex

The Problem:

Immature pencil grip. Fisted or using all fingers on pencil.

Unable to use buttons, snaps, and zippers.

Awkward grasp on fork and spoon.

Dislikes coloring and writing.

The Reason:

The Grasp (a.k.a.palmar) reflex is stuck.

Children often remind me that coloring writing getting dressed and using a fork and spoon is “boring”. Sometimes activities that are labeled boring, or really just difficult. It’s mostly because the grasp for reflex is stuck and using their hand in any way it’s too hard. Therefore, it gets labelled as “boring”.

The 4-1-1 (information) on Grasping Reflexes:

The grasping reflexes develop early in the womb at 11 weeks gestation. This hand grasping reflex (palmar grasp) and foot grasping (plantar grasp) are also protective reflexes that help the baby cling onto its mother for safety in the womb and after birth too.

Often in ultrasounds, the baby can be spotted holding the umbilical cord!

It is present at birth, which makes the best photo ever…New baby holding it’s parents finger with its tiny little hand. #heartburstingwithlove ❤

There are two types of grasping reflexes. One for the hands, and one for the feet.

The foot grasp curls the toes around the object that touches the foot. Both the foot and hand grasping reflex serve their purpose and then integrate at 6 months old for the hand grasping, and 1 year old for the foot grasp. They are needed for protection, then no longer needed because the baby is advancing!

At 6 months old, baby is holding its bottle and at 12 months old they are walking.

They start to drop everything! Parents will be constantly picking stuff up off the floor, but this is a signs that your baby is learning to pick up and release objects with a purpose. Woohoo! They start standing with their whole foot in contact with the floor.

The 4-1-1 (information) on the Sensory Reflex:

The sensory reflex helps the baby move side to side through the birth canal. It is activated when the baby’s back brushes against the birth canal.

It helps the baby move little by little- one side at a time.

Babies born by way of c-section are at risk for not being able to use their spinal galant reflex properly.

The 4-1-1 (information) on the Birth Reflex:

The birth reflex [ATNR (asymmetric tonic neck reflex)] helps the baby turn it’s arm in the direction that it’s head is turned. This helps the shoulders come through the birth canal one at a time for a safe delivery. This reflex is necessary and reinforced by the birth process to coordinate and integrate bother sides of the body.

This reflex also helps the baby clear its mouth and nose for breathing and eating. It turns its head, and the hand and arm move out of the way.

Parents will know that the Birth reflex is going away, because baby can roll over from their back to their tummy!

By 4 months, this reflex is no longer needed. The brain and body are advancing and a new reflex called the coordination reflex develops.

This reflex is important for upper body and lower body coordination. Remember, the birth reflex does right/left coordination. And the coordination reflex does upper body and lower body coordination. This reflex will be helpful for crawling and helping the baby go on their hands and knees.

All of those flex and extend arm and leg movements allows the baby to coordinate its upper and lower body, which they will need for crawling with alternating arms and legs. #babyonthemove!

A lot of the children I treat have a very difficult time with school activities. One of the reasons for their troubles is a stuck coordination reflex.

Copying from the board is difficult because the eyes and the head do not move separately from each other, and every time they look down, their arms bend making it harder to write.

Writing on lined paper is challenging because of visual perceptual impairments and other factors such as poor muscle tone causing weak sitting posture.

The child with a stuck coordination reflex is always being asked, while writing, to “hold the paper with their other hand.”, instead of hold their head up with their hand. This child is also told to sit up straight in the chair without slouching or sitting on their legs.

Getting the reflexes unstuck takes some dedication, flexibility, creativity, and most of all...fun!

Reflexes can be unstuck at any age. It is never too late.

Each reflex has its own movement to complete each day in order for it to become unstuck.

The movements must be done for 30 days in a row to get the reflex unstuck.

Miss more than 3 days? Then the 30 days starts over.

The children that I know, have the coolest brains! They have flexible brains, which means it is always learning, growing, and changing. Another word for this is what is known as neuroplasticity.

The reason why we can get the reflexes unstuck is because of the science of neuroplasticity. Aka: the brain is awesome and can learn new things or unlearn things at any age.

At first, the starfish is a little tricky. Remember the the same side arm and leg cross.

Right arm over left. Right leg over left.

The starfish is usually the starting point to unstick reflexes. However, every brain and body is dierent which results in a customized prescription of how to unstick the reflexes.

Children can have one oe multiple reflexes that are stuck.

Remember, we all need the reflexes in order for us to grow and develop, it is when the reflex becomes STUCK that it is a problem. It is a problem because the stuck reflex stops the body and brain from being in sync, which causes disruptions in the neurological system.

How do you choose how to unstick a reflex when there are 2 options to pick from?

Good question… choosing the movements to do depends on a bunch of different factors. I always take into account their age, skill level, frustration tolerance, daily schedule, and which one is the most fun!

This is why what I do is so much fun for me. Every case has a similar big picture, but it is in the details that makes every case unique. In the details, I can gather the information I need to formulate a prescription plan for healing and transforming the neurological system.

Here is what I can tell you about unsticking the reflexes…I can see and feel a noticeable difference in the energy of the child’s neurological system. They are more grounded, less hyperactive, more focused, cooperative, and are in a state of flow when engaged in their activities. You will notice this too.

And on a physiological level, you will see the size of their pupils in their eyes become typical or normal sized. Sometimes children with a stuck cry and/or sensory reflex have large pupils. I have seen the pupils change in size indicating a more focused brain with improved sensory processing. Their heartbeat will become more calm. So many children with a stuck cry and/or sensory reflex have a pounding heart. Sleep will improve. Toilet habits will be more consistent. Their talking volume decreases and they using their “indoor voice”.

The Story of George

Let’s take George as an example. The sweetest 4 year old boy ever! And did he like to jump off the couch, invade personal space, throw toys, crash into people or onto the floor, and talk REALLY loud! He disliked coloring, following directions, transitioning to a different place or new activity, getting dressed, and being alone. Teachers and relatives told his parents that he probably had ADHD and should go on medication. George’s parents called me, and during my evaluation, I discovered that he had not one but 4 stuck reflexes!

His behaviors and symptoms were classic of reflexes that were just stuck. George’s mom filled me in on his birth history which included a cesarean delivery at 40 weeks gestation…pretty typical birth history right?! Like I said, it is all in the details because even delivery by caesarean section is a risk factor for stuck reflexes.

After gathering more information through playing with George, I was able to prescribe an individual and customized treatment plan. George and his parents were very good students and completed their prescribed activities (robot, cat/cow, snow angels, etc.) everyday for 30 days at minimum and the results were awesome! .

The boy who did not like to color, became a little Picasso! He started doodling and coloring independently, and just because he wanted to! He kept his personal space, and was speaking to friends instead of pulling their hair to get their attention. He became better at transitioning, especially out of the house. The classic reminder to “put your shoes on!” was only said a few times by George’s parents instead of what felt like 1000 times.

George’s mom and dad were less stressed too! They found themselves giving George less prompts to do something or listen to them…. Phew, what a relief… George also became less worried about what activity was next and what the daily schedule was going to be for the day. He exhibited a more “go with the flow” aura, which really opened George and his parents up for spontaneous adventures to the park, stores, or playdates.

They used the strategies, tools, and remedies they learned from their trainings with me, and from their individual treatment plan that I prescribed. George and his family were finally able to focus on having fun, instead of managing and anticipating behaviors. The huge concerns that George’s teachers had about his performance in the classroom were now seemingly nonexistent.

So what exactly happened to George that made these changes? To sum it up, George’s brain changed! He was able to unstick the reflexes and make a smooth connection in his brain and body. Just like the TV with the smooth signal; the brain now has a clear picture. There is less static and noise throughout the body and brain once the reflexes became unstuck!

The evidence is in the behavior. Behavior is an attempt for connection. Whether it is labelled good or bad. It’s a way to connect with the environment, a thing, or with a person. George’s interactions changed. The way he was connecting with his environment, with others, and with his toys was more meaningful and production. His choice of activities became different and they required him to use more skills, which he could access now, because his reflexes were unstuck. George continues to surprise us with his achievements and enthusiasm for life.
