Greetings from the President

D

an Alley here, President of the Function 4 Junction’s Board of Directors, welcoming everyone to the 19th annual Function 4 Junction. In 2012 the Show ‘N Shine was held in the downtown area of Junction City for the second year in a row. This has proved to be a great place to showcase all the nice rods and cruisers, and for people to visit some of our local shops and businesses. We expect that the heart of town will remain as the permanent location for the Show. The weather was cool and cloudy at the start of the Show, but by afternoon the sun was shining through and made the Cruise very comfortable and enjoyable for drivers and spectators. We were able to register over 600 vehicles that day, with more than 200 participating in the Show. After talking to local businesses, cruisers and anyone who would listen during the past two years, I’ve heard quite a few comments that people

enjoyed being able to cruise down Front Street and past the water tower. I think this also gives the crowd a lot more room to spread out than before. The downtown setting for the Show let people get to know the town and its businesses a little better, and it also allowed more space to walk around the cars for a better look. I would like to give a great big “Thank You” to all of our sponsors, volunteers and especially the participants that make our event possible. Without your help this wouldn’t happen. I really appreciate all that you do. Our Function continues to raise money for local scholarships. Any time we can help out our young people, the community benefits as well. The F4J awarded one $1,500 scholarship last year to Levi Smucker, who is now enrolled in the University of Oregon. There is a program set up through the Education Together Foundation where we maintain a fund

Earnhardt and Foose cars to be shown A restored Chevy Lumina driven by legendary NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt will be on display at the F4J in 2013, along with a S10 pickup modified by Chip Foose of the Disovery Channel program Overhaulin’. The famous #3 car Earnhardt raced in the

Look for the big blue Bill McNally racing car hauler painted with the NAPA logo; it’ll be parked somewhere off 8th Street at the north end of the Show area.

Volunteers fuel the engine The Function 4 Junction runs on human power all year long

by Victoria Stephens and Rob Lafferty

The Function 4 Junction is popular with hundreds of participants and thousands of spectators, not only because of its family-fun atmosphere and the opportunity to observe so many splendid vehicles on display, but also because of the worthy causes it supports. It’s those contributions to the community that motivate many volunteers to offer their services – and the event couldn’t exist without their help. The main purpose for holding the Function is shown on the posters and flyers seen all over town during the months before the event – “4 the Children, 4 the Schools and 4 the Community.” Much of the money generated by event fees goes to support a dedicated scholarship fund, while volunteers from school groups have the

opportunity to raise donations that help support their programs. Over the years, donations have also been made by the Function board of directors to the Tiger Auction, the TriCounty Chamber of Commerce, Viking Sal Senior Center, Bethel Booster Club and local Scouting programs. 2013 will be the third year that both the Show ‘N Shine and Cruise will be centered in downtown Junction City. The move allows for more businesses to become involved and is an opportunity for visitors to become acquainted with what Junction City has to offer. It’s one more way that the Function offers something back to the community in return for its gracious hosting of the event. It takes a lot of capable, helping hands to pull together the Show ‘N Shine and continued on page

9 Cruise each year. A few years ago, a record was set when an estimated 15,000 spectators lined the streets and enjoyed the Cruise. Any event that involves more than 600 vehicles needs dozens of people to make sure everything runs smoothly and safely. Volunteers are recruited from throughout the community including various school groups, such as sports teams and clubs. Some groups raise funds by renting donated parking spaces during the Show ‘N Shine at a cost between $3 to $5 per space. US Bank, Dari Mart, Oregon Neurosport Physical Therapy and the owners of the former Gibson Ford lot all donate their parking lots while Bi-Mart donates the use of 38 of their spaces. Soccer teams use the event to help raise money for uniforms. Donations are made to teams in exchange for the students and their parents overseeing the barricades during the Cruise. The Junction City High School equestrian team of about a dozen riders helps each year with Cruise and Show registration. Oaklea Middle School fields a team of volunteers, as do the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, who help clean the street and sidewalks. “The Girl Scouts have been doing a post-event cleanup since the Function first came into town,” said Scout leader Melany Vaughan. “Most volunteers are recruited by word of mouth,” said Dan Alley, president of the Function 4 Junction board. “This goes on throughout the year, and we expect to have more than 40 volunteers working at the event this year.“ Volunteer committees exist to help control traffic and parking, operate barricades, help with food service, provide information and register vehicles. They also sell raffle tickets, set everything up on the morning from page

of the Function, judge the entries and clean up afterwards. Many businesses also contribute free materials, set up displays and purchase advertising to lend their support. Last year Oscar Cueves and his crew from Wal-Mart volunteered their time to help at the Show and Cruise; in addition, the company made a donation to the Function. Advertisers with the Function 4 Junction magazine donated flyers, coupons and stickers to help fill goodie bags given to entrants. Each bag includes dash plaques, tee shirts and the Function 4 Junction magazine as well as various advertiser-donated items. Three board members and several volunteers help with the judging of vehicles in each of the 30 categories of awards. Last year’s judges were Chad Walberg, Jamie Christie and Rick Weinhold, along with board president Dan Alley and magazine editor Scott McKinley. Alley said that no one volunteer stands out, as they are all willing to jump in and help wherever they are needed. He emphasized that all of the board members are also volunteers who do an outstanding job on the committees they run. “Without them we wouldn’t be where we’re at...and it’s the board members who put this all together,” he said.

lettered in varsity basketball for three of those years and received second team All-Sky-Em recognition. He added soccer as a sport in his junior and senior years to go along with four years on the golf squad, where he competed at the state level as a senior. Levi started a foundation he calls “Youth Golf 4 Life” during his junior year. The foundation raises funds to take underprivileged kids to Diamond Woods Golf Course every Saturday, where he teaches them how to play golf and how to respect the game. With all of that in his resume, it was an easy decision to grant the 2012 Function 4 Junction Scholarship to Levi Smucker. The Education Together Foundation was founded in 1987 in Junction City with a mission of providing additional needed funds to local area schools. The group administers scholarships, distributes endowments and awards grants in order to achieve those goals, and to support students at all grade levels. In 2011, all applicants who applied for scholarships were awarded funding through the program.

In his own words... Dear F4J members; I know it’s customary for you to receive a letter in return after donating a scholarship each year, but I hope you see the sincerity in my writing and realize how truly thankful I am. I’d like to personally thank you for the contribution you are making to my future. It’s always been a lifelong goal of mine to be able to come out of college debt-free. With your support you put me one step closer, and I fully intend to one day pay it forward into the life of another teenager ready to start life on his own. I understand with the economy the way it is that your scholarship money was harder to raise than ever. It’s inspiring to know that there are still people out there who are willing to go out of their way to make a difference in another person’s life, and that’s what I’m striving to become. One of my favorite quotes is from UCLA basketball coaching legend John Wooden, who said, “It isn’t what you do, but how you do it.” At first it was tough for me to understand because I thought life is all about the great things you do. But in reality, I realized in every part of my life, if I’m not giving 100 percent of my energy to whatever I’m doing, it’s meaningless. Showing up every day with energy and love is something I want to bring to my Youth Golf for Life program, and to my life as well. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to fulfill my dream. God Bless,

A brief history of the Function 4 Junction

F

or more than a decade, an informal gathering of classic car owners and custom auto enthusiasts was held at sites along River Road in North Eugene. From that beginning back in 1995, the event grew until it now occupies much of the town of Junction City for one Saturday every spring.

It’s a celebration of the history of American automobiles that goes back more than a century, and serves as a showcase for the modern state of the craft of auto restoration. It’s also a expression of the passion that many people feel towards their favorite make and model. But mostly it’s a chance to have fun while taking in the scene, talking about cars and in the process, doing good things for the community – and that certainly hasn’t changed over the years… Since 2006, what is now known as the Function 4 Junction Show ’N Shine and Cruise has been held within the city limits, using the main drag of this Willamette Valley town as its Cruise route. The Show ‘N Shine has moved from the often-muddy high school football field to the paved streets at the center of town. Between 10,000 and 15,000 people show up every year to enjoy the day, watch the cruisers and inspect the show cars. It’s the second largest event held in Junction City (behind the four-day Scandinavian Festival) and one of the most popular car shows in Oregon. A volunteer board of directors now manages the non-profit organization that stages the events and continue the mission of offering scholarships and grants, which are made possible through registration fees, shirt and poster sales along with other fund-raising efforts. Spectators at the 18th annual Function in 2012 lined both sides of Ivy Street – the city’s name for the four lanes of Highway 99 that run through the center of town. The Cruise traditionally begins at 6pm with two vintage fire trucks leading the way. Automobiles of every make, model and vintage cruise up and down the main drag until darkness falls and the Cruise officially ends. The Show is held all day long, and this year will be centered once again at the corner of 6th Avenue and Greenwood Street. Awards are announced and presented continued on page

around 3pm, and then everyone gets ready for the main event – the Cruise! Publishing the annual Function 4 Junction magazine has helped spread the word and bring more folks to the Cruise. Between 7,500 and 10,000 copies are distributed across the region and around the state in the weeks before the event. Posters and shirts that incorporate the cover design are also part of the promotional effort. Posters can be seen in store windows all over the nearby cities of Eugene and Springfield. Cruisers ask for them at the Show and fans are always eager to have one as a souvenir. There are a staggering number of volunteer hours devoted to running the Function. Public safety, recruiting volunteers, entry registration, and advertising are only a few of the organizational issues that surround a successful car show before the big day actually begins. Afterwards, the task of cleaning up all around town requires people working long hours, starting right after the Cruise is done and continuing through the following day.

The intersection of Sixth Street and Greenwood Avenue at the center of downtown Junction City will once again be the site of the Function 4 Junction Show ‘N Shine. Special thanks are long overdue to the folks at US Bank, who have donated their parking lot every year for use as a staging area and the main memorabilia booth location, as well as the site for award winners to have their photos taken with their cars.

All throughout the year, members of the F4J board take on specific duties and provide the important committee leadership necessary to make dozens of small details come together on time. With the support of thousands of classic and custom automobile fans, many local

hat defines art when the word has different meanings to different people? A painting by Rembrandt or Picasso hanging in a museum, most would agree, is art. To Chip Chipman, art is the collection of restored automobiles in his car shop, which deserves a more accurate description of car museum. The most-prized piece of art in the building is Chip’s 1937 Ford Wildrod Coupe. The car has been so carefully crafted that it’s won Best of Show or Best of Class in ninety percent of the car shows it’s been entered in. ”It just keeps winning,” said Chip. ”When I first saw the car on the Internet I thought, ‘I have to have that car’.” Unfortunately the coupe was in Ohio and it wasn’t for sale. About a year later, Chip and Bernie, his wife of fifty years, went to a show in Lincoln City when lo and behold, there it was. He at first thought it was a ’41 Willys when looking at it from from behind, but he quickly figured out it was the Ford he wanted. He was unable to talk to the owner about buying it,

so his valued piece of art eluded him a second time. Four months later, Chip went to the Portland Roadster show and there was the coupe again. He looked for the owners to talk with them about buying it, but could not find them. “They didn’t hang around the car at all,” Chip said. Chip e-mailed again and the answer was a resounding “No, and don’t ask again.” Knowing that he had to have that car, Chip waited a few weeks before sending another e-mail, and the following exchange occurred: “I am still here, have you sold it yet? Here’s my offer – as a matter of fact, my wife is here in my office right now, telling me she’s mad because I even made an offer.” “Well, my wife is here raising hell with me, too, because

I just sold the car.” “Who did you sell it to?” “To you, dummy!” So Chip’s persisitence paid off and the coupe was his. He got the car home and went all through it. He redid the interior in leather, hid all of the wires around the motor for a nice clean look and added Boyd Caddington wheels and tires

different shows every year.” Just like an art collector, you can often find Chip sitting on a couch in his shop, looking at his stable of cars, which includes two ‘41 Willys – a Swoopster and a coupe – plus a ‘39 Ford hardtop and his mother’s old car, a ‘68 Dodge Dart. From time to time he will grab a polishing cloth and wipe the dust off, then stand back and take in the beauty of his art collection. His cars are not drivers – he trailers them to shows. After all, who would carry a Monet with them everywhere they go?

It has been winning every since. Chip loves the competition at the shows and the friends he has made along the way. He has yet to meet someone that isn’t friendly or willing to help when needed. “We don’t need friends around here,” says Chip. “We have hundreds from the car shows. We usually go to about 30

I had the rebuilt engine bored, added a Schneider three-quarter race cam, and topped it off with three deuces on an Offenhauser manifold and one-inch risers. This added many shiny things for me to keep clean! “The decision for the paint color was the most difficult of all. Bob and Jackie Sorenson have taken their 1951 Nash Super as low as you can go... by Gary Breedlove

estoring cars is one way to remind ourselves of a nostalgic era. Our first car in high school, or the one we cruised the ‘gut’ in, becomes a way of looking back. Bob Sorensen of Salem is just the opposite. He decided at age 17, while driving his dad’s 1951 Nash, exactly which car he would restore. Sorensen enjoyed driving that old Nash but it didn’t leave much of an impression with the kids at his high school. “Not a popular car for high school kids, but I loved it,” Bob said. He often would drive home from school using a back road because it continued on page 32

had some nice curves and he liked driving fast. One day he was driving that back road when a tire blew out, causing the car to slide onto the shoulder and slowly sink in the mud up to the body. Viola – the inspiration for his 1951 Nash! Bob decided at that point he would restore one some day and have it be able to sit on the ground. Fast forward to 2005. While looking photos by Gary Breedlove The roof is chopped four inches, as is the windshield, which is made of Lexan because the glass windshield broke when they tried to cut it down. A 2004 Corvette LS3 powers the Nash along with a Pontiac 4L60E automatic transmission with a shift kit. The hood opens from the back, controlled by a hydraulic arm from a cabinet that would raise and lower a big screen TV with a touch of a button. A friend had one and was bragging about it, so Bob checked the manual, found it was a 12-volt system and ordered one for the Nash.

online at eBay, Bob found a ’51 Nash in Missouri marked “buy it now” for $600. The ad had only been posted for two hours. Without hesitation he clicked the ‘buy it now’ button. As simply as that, he owned the car of his dreams. The car was missing a front wheel, and the floorboards were rusted out due to it sitting in a field for ten years with the windows down. After quickly jury-rigging a front wheel, the long process of restoration and modification began. What Sorensen didn’t know at the start was how much of a family project it would become. Along with help from his wife Jackie, fabricator Rick Tedder and painter Salvador Ochoa, came years of help from kids and grandkids in one way or another to complete his dream. It’s even the centerpiece of their Christmas cards, as the family would gather around the car in different stages of restoration and have their photo taken with it. It was a way to document the progress on the car to family members and the growing family he was enjoying. After six long years of restoration work the Nash was complete and it was time to drive it and enjoy it. Yes, this is a driver for Sorensen. His goal for this year is to drive it to every car show he and Jackie go to.

Kathy Heinrich’s 1965 Mustang Fastback K-Code by Rob Lafferty

The Ford Mustang is probably the most distinctive and iconic American automobile. The body lines, profile and styling of the first decade of models are instantly recognizable by car enthusiasts everywhere. When Kathy Louise Heinrich first sat behind the wheel of her black 1965 Mustang Fastback K-Code in 1969, she

knew it was just the right car for her – and more than four decades later, it still is. Kathy acquired the Mustang from its original owner in Marysville. She was car shopping with her father, looking to replace her VW that was totaled in a freak crash with a furniture truck that killed Kathy’s sister-in-law, Avalee Rae Heinrich. The car is dedicated to

Karlin Ray Above: Kathy Heinrich stands in front of her Mustang along with just a few of the trophies and awards her car has earned over the past four years. Right: Kathy and son Karlin Ray at last year’s F4J award ceremony. photo right by Bill Haney above photos by

Avalee’s memory with her name painted in pinstripes on the back end. In original condition the car was white with a solid red interior that was a popular style in the mid-60’s. Kathy drove it daily until engine problems caused her to park it in 1975. It stayed in her garage in West Linn for the next 31 years until she decided it was time get it running again and to paint it black, which naturally led to a full restoration. It took two years for her husband Michael, who did the engine work, and son Karlin taking care of bodywork and paint, to get the car back into full running condition with the interior redone in red and black. Kathy credits the crew at the Kindred & Son body shop in Wilsonville, where her son works, and Jerry Arundale of Wilsonville, who did most of the interior, for helping get her Mustang continued on page 36

34 back on the road and into car shows, where it has performed quite well at several prestigious shows. It has placed in its class at the Portland Roadster Show three years running and also has three awards from the Long Beach Rod Run. “I’ve been invited twice to show it at the invitation-only Salem Roadster Show, which is quite an honor,” said Kathy. “We only show it four or five times a year, but it’s a very popular car at every show.” In addition to being one of truly classic American automobiles, Kathy’s Mustang is a rare vehicle, too. “They only made 7,273 of the K-Code series in 1965, including coupes and fastbacks with the GT package that included fog lights,” she said. “I think there are only about 250 left out there now.” Her Mustang is not a race car (“I drove it fast when I was young, but never raced it on a track...”) and is pretty much a show car that gets trailered to all but the most local of shows these days, but it’s not the only restored classic in the Heinrich family. Karlin owns a 1954 Buick that was in last year’s F4J show, while she and Michael are restoring two other vehicles right now. “I love cars, I love ripping ‘em apart and getting all grubby,” Kathy said. “I’m addicted to it. We’re currently rebuilding a 1950 DeSoto Custom that we found for $800, which we plan to sell when it’s finished. We also have a project car we will keep – a 1950 Cadillac Miller hearse that is a very cool car.” If all goes well, viewers at this year’s Function will get to see that hearse, which won’t be fully restored by then but should be able to make the trip. “I love coming down to the Junction City show,” Kathy said. “I think it’s great that the show has moved downtown. It’s a nice setting for both the cars and drivers.” F4J magazine’s chief editor, Scott McKinley, said that he chose Kathy’s Mustang for the Editor’s Choice award because, “What they did with it got my attention more than all the cars I had to choose from. My first car was that same model in red; maybe that and the fact that it is a tribute to the memory of Avalee and is still in the family after all these years had something to do with my decision.” continued from page

A perfect spring day with warm sunshine breaking through clouds kept the asphalt cool on June 12, 2012 for the 20th annual Show ‘N Shine. 231 cars registered for the Show and 30 awards were presented to the best automobiles in each class. Downtown merchants had a busy day from all the foot traffic while spectators got a close look at the cars in a clean and comfortable setting, with plenty of time to talk to owners about their restoration or custom work. We hope to see you as we do it all again in downtown Junction City in 2013!

A beautiful, cool day with sunlight breaking through the clouds blessed the 2012 Function 4 Junction with perfect viewing and cruising weather. An estimated 11,000 spectators came into town to watch over 600 car owners parade their hot rods, classics and customs up and down 14 blocks of Hwy. 99, the fourlane main drag of Junction City. It’s become one of the largest combined show and cruise events in the state of Oregon, but there’s always room for more cars and more folks who love looking at cars. Come and join in the fun of the Function in 2013! Photography by Gary Breedlove, Bill Haney and Richard L. Smith

Larry Buckles puts his artist’s touch on everything he drives

is work is visible all over Junction City and throughout Lane County. It can also be seen rolling down roads all across America, Australia, Germany and countries unknown. From wall murals to business signs to body art on custom cars, motorcycles, boats and motor homes, in styles that range from simple lettering to intricately detailed airbrushing, there isn’t much that Larry Buckles hasn’t painted at least once, sometime, somewhere.

“Like a lot of my projects, it wasn’t easy, but I did figure it out.”

The walls and counters of his sign shop are covered with old photos and works in progress, and it provides an archive that represents Larry’s range of talent. Buckles Signs is in the heart of Junction City, where Hwy. 99 becomes Ivy Street, the main street of town. And in the side room of his shop, invited guests can see a Indian motorcycle restoration that is nearly completed. At home there’s more. Larry owns a 1947 Indian Chief and a 1947 Harley Knucklehead that are prime examples of his bike-builder skills and his talent as a painter. Both bikes are garaged alongside the custom canary-yellow rod he built from a 1930 Model A Coupe. “I got my first wheels at 13 years old, when I lived in Omaha, Nebraska,” Larry said. “I didn’t know much about continued on page

bikes, but it was a mo-ped, not running. Cost me $10. A fellow by the name of Jim Wild showed me how to nail the lids from baby food jars to a board and use the jars to hold nuts and bolts. I took the thing apart and stored all the small parts in those jars, got it rebuilt, moved up to a Cushman Eagle scooter and I’ve been building bikes ever since.” Riding is a family habit; Larry’s Dad rode motorcycles in WWII and owned a ’36 Knucklehead, while Larry’s brother Donald was a flat track racer who died young in a motrocycle crash. “My dad always told us that we would never be riding bikes,” Larry said. “He was wrong about that. Donald could flat-out ride.” Larry and his wife, Chris, came to Oregon from Millard, Nebraska more than four decades ago, thanks to the throw of a dart. “We knew we wanted to move but we didn’t know where, except that we wanted to be somewhere out West, so we threw a dart at a map of the U.S. The first one landed in the Pacific Ocean. The second dart landed on Blue River, so that’s where we headed. “We landed at first in a tiny red cabin just across Hwy. 126 from an old hunting lodge where Teddy Roosevelt once stayed. Later we ended up in Alpine, picking apples in the orchards and almost starving that first year.” Things started getting better after they moved to Lane County and Larry got work painting murals on storefront glass during Christmas season. “It seems like I did just about every Christmas window in Junction City and Monroe in 1974.” Larry and Chris moved to Monroe 11 years ago. Their property has log structures he built by hand, then decorated with automotive and motorcycle signs and antiques. continued on page

A Free Soul and a fine artist Larry joined the Free Souls motorcyle club in 1979 on the anniversary of his brother’s death. Later, on an extended trip through Germany, he helped local riders start up the first Free Souls club in that country. He even shipped two Harleys, a ’56 Panhead and a ‘56 Shovelhead, across the Pacific to Australia a full month before he flew over to go touring Down Under. “I sold both of those bikes there,” Larry said, smiling. “I had to pay for my trip home somehow.” As the happy owner of two beautiful bikes and a striking custom coupe, Larry can ride in style to any kind of event he chooses. One of those bikes is a deep red 1947 Indian Chief that has been fully restored to stock condition with its unique righthand shift bar and left-hand throttle grip. “I bought that bike in April of 2003,” Larry said. “It was all in pieces and stored in what seemed like a hundred

boxes. It took about two years to finish the restoration, and it was featured on the cover of AllAmerican Motorcycle magazine in Novemebr of 2005.” The coupe is a replica 1930 Model A Ford that has been in Larry’s garage for more than 25 years. It took him nearly six years to build, and he’s kept it in pristine condition ever since. “It’s all Ford parts, all steel, with ‘29 fenders on a ‘30 frame. The dash is a 1930 model but the grill is from a”32 pickup truck. It also has a dagoed drop axle and a 302 Ford engine.” Larry’s Harley is a “Frankenstein” creation that has all Harley parts

from several different models. It’s designed to match the style of a ‘46 Knucklehead right down to the saddlebags and painted gun-barrel blue. That project was finished in 2006. Larry’s painting skills can easily be seen around town at the high school, at Abbey’s Pizza and Los Dos Campecino’s Mexican restaurant, among other businesses. Most of his work is large and dramatic, but he can paint whatever a client asks for. “I once painted Sylvester the Cat on a racing tire,” Larry recalled. “Last year I put pinstripes on a guy’s running shoes at his request. I painted a mural on a VW van that won a People’s Choice award in a Seattle show about ten years ago. I was asked to fly to Montana to paint a wall for National College. “I’ll paint just about anything that will hold still long enough...”

A quiet man with a loud bike and a fast car...

Travis Abrahamson has two nice rides for rolling the backroads of Oregon story by Rob Lafferty photos by Curtis Reed

M

ost muscle cars look fast even when they’re standing still. Most motorcycles do, too, and they’re generally pretty loud. But people who prefer fast and loud engines in their vehicles aren’t always so easy to spot.

With his 1969 Camaro and 2003 BMC, Travis has the right set of wheeels for crusing when it’s raining or sunny.

Travis Abrahamson is one of those guys. Tall, clean-cut and soft-spoken, the 41-year-old father of five daughters and a son is the assistant manager of the Les Schwab tire dealership in Junction City, with 20 years of experience working for the same company. He’s also the proud owner of a custom 1969 Chevrolet Camaro and a 2003 BMC Big Daddy motorbike; both of those vehicles have been award winners in past shows. The Camaro is even faster than it looks. The stock smallblock 302 engine has been replaced with a new big-block 427 that Travis describes as being “pretty strong.” He removed the stock Camaro automatic transmission and installed a 4-speed Muncie M21 tranny instead. The car is destined to run on drag racing tracks as a pro-street vehicle in the near future, after it gets stripped down for a new paint job. “It’s one of the most recognizable cars on the road,” Travis said of the Camaro line. “The car is iconic, and I’ve wanted one since I was 16 years old.” He finally got his in 2005, not long after moving to Junction City from Cottage Grove. The original owner was a local continued on page

fellow, Kip Parks, who bought the car for his wife in 1971. Parks later sold the car to a friend, who moved to California and eventually parked it. Years passed, then eventually Parks bought the car back and brought it home to Oregon, where Travis finally found his dream machine. “It was in pieces,” Travis said. “I was able to drive it home, but it had no interior, no dash, no carpeting and the trunk was full of parts – some of them new and still in their boxes.” The interior restoration back to full stock condition was the first task in restoring the Camaro to prime condition. With the body still in good shape, engine and transmission work became the next priorities. The current paint job is not original, but it’s still the same paint as when Travis first bought the car. “From 20 feet away it looks great,” Travis said, “but I’ll be repainting it this year.”

“The car is iconic. It’s one of the most recognizable cars on the road...”

67

That’s the final piece of work left to bring the Camaro to the full restoration and customization that Travis has been envisioning ever since his days spent learning about cars in high school auto shop. His interest is part of the Abrahamson family bloodlines – Travis’ dad has a ’39 Chevy Coupe and his mother owns a ’55 Chevy BelAir 2-door classic. His uncles were also an influence; one of them owned an auto mechanic shop for many years, and all of them have a passion for classic and custom vehicles. The family gets to see the Camaro every summer when Travis trailers it up to his home region of Everett, Washington for a show or two, where it once won a Sponsor’s Pick award. continued on page

“Most of my kids have enjoyed working on cars with me,” Travis said. “All the girls have quads that they ride, and my son, who is 5, has a little 50cc Suzuki motorbike. He shows all the signs of being a car lover.” Travis’ motorcycle is low, sleek and loud. It’s a custom chopper with an EVO motor and a unique paint job, created from a production model by a bike builder in Bend. “I bought the bike in 2009 in Albany as a repo,” Travis explained. “I freshened up the motor and added new tires, but the major work I had done was the paint.” Travis asked Randy Nagle of Elmira to repaint the bike in a deep red with black flame accents under a pearl overcoat. Nagle also created 54 “ghost skulls” all over the body of the bike that can be faintly

69

“I joined the board because I believe in what the board and the Function represent,” he explained. “The college scholarship program was my primary reason for getting involved. Providing that kind of educational support to the

youth of the community has always been important to me.” He now represents the F4J board at the annual Education Together grants ceremony, where this year the judges chose Levi Smucker of Junction City to receive the $1,500 scholarship (see story on pg. 12). Travis has been in charge of running the Show ‘N Shine during past years, but now serves more as an all-around troubleshooter and the official Cruise starter. “The biggest problem I deal with is keeping unregistered cars out of

the Cruise,” Travis said, laughing. “My solution is simple – interlopers either get out of the lineup or run me over. So far, I’m still standing...”

There is a free model car building event that allows up to 100 kids to build a theme car from a kit. This year, that car will be a 2010 Mustang. According to organizer Carolynne Hopkins, about 180 cars registered for the show last year. “We usually have around 200 cars, but it was very hot that day at 104 degrees, which may have kept a few car owners away.” The 2013 show will held, as always, on the first Saturday in August, which falls on Aug. 3 this year.

The city of Bend hosts a classic summer show and cruise in Oregon’s high country story and photos by Gary Breedlove

M

ore than 500 classic cars from as far away as Texas were on display in Drake Park for the 28th annual Flashback Cruz held last August in Bend, Oregon. The show is organized by the by the Central Oregon Classic Chevy Club and features cars from 1979 and older years. Drake Park is a perfect setting for displaying these amazing vehicles. Lush trees and a small lake in the middle are the backdrop for one of the biggest Show & Shines in the state. The event includes a full weekend of activities that feature a scavenger hunt, a cruise to Mt. Bachelor, a poker run and the Saturday night “Cruz” in downtown Bend. It all started in 1985 as the Cascade Lakes Fun Run, but was open to Chevy’s only. The problem with that was not all of the friends of the participants had Chevys, but they wanted to enjoy the run. In 1995 the club opened it to all 1974 and older vehicles. As a result it grew from 40 cars to more than 500. In 2012 the club voted in favor of a

test trial to allow 1979 and older cars – along with 30 motorcycles that are 1979 and older – into the Show & Shine. Before moving to its current location the event was held at Shevlon Park, in various parking lots, at the Armory and

on the streets of downtown Bend. Drake Park was secured in 2003 and the event was moved from the third week in July to the first week in August. In addition to being a great setting for the Show, Drake Park is a great location for all family members. It’s close to downtown shopping for anyone who doesn’t want to hang around in the park

all weekend. There are activities for the kids during the event, including a hulahoop contest held on the main stage. They also have a youth class and a ladies class to help show everyone that car restoration isn’t only a male hobby. The mayor selects the winner of the youth class while sponsors will pick the ladies winner. The event could not happen without the help of its sponsors, who have increased each year from 35 to more than 80. This year’s major sponsor was Napa Auto Parts/ High Desert Auto Supply in Bend. Sponsors also donate items for the raffle and poker walk. This is one of the biggest cruise and show-n-shine events East of the Cascades. It’s well worth the drive to Bend to see it. If you only visit two shows this year, I recommend this one. And also the Function 4 Junction, of course... continued next page

short bus is the name most folks use when describing the type of vehicle provided by schools for students with special needs. When you’re part of the Roadkill Kruzers from Stayton, however, the phrase ”riding the short bus” takes on a completely different meaning – because this group of funloving car show fans and participants has turned a typical short bus into a rolling car show party bus. The conversion from functional to fun began when two friends, Michael Hayes

Russ Strohmeyer, owner of the Short Bus.

and Russ Strohmeyer, started to rebuild a 1991 Chevy short bus, just as a lark. Several businesses in and around Stayton heard of the project and wanted to get involved as sponsors, which helped to pay for the rebuild. The cost of doing the exterior was also paid in part by adding sponsor’s logos as body art. When a mutual friend of the builders wanted to join the group, Russ and Michael saw an opportunity to raise some more funds, so they told Tom Schmidt that there would be a membership fee of $200. That fundraising possibility fell through when Major Tom paid his fee with two $100 bills from a Monopoly game. Everyone got a great laugh and the group started to grow. This group of slightly crazy, fun-loving couples began meeting about ten years ago at a 1950’s-style diner in Stayton. They all have cars that participate in shows and cruises. To be a member-

approved automobile, each car must have a mock road kill victim on display. For reasons only club members can explain, at the 2012 Function 4 Junction the chosen species was a skunk. Sometimes there are non-members who tag along aboard the bus to individual shows. One fellow joined the group for the Function last year, and his fee for a ride on the bus was three quarts of oil!

On the day of last year’s show in Junction City, it was Vicki Champ’s birthday. It was a festive way to celebrate a birthday, even if Vicki had to bring her own cake and party supplies. But everyone enjoyed eating her cake! There are a half-dozen couples within the club who get along so well, they do a lot of things outside of auto shows together. Usually the party bus gets used for transportation. They travel around to the theater or ride out to events in Bend and Sisters. This is a group of car enthusiasts who really enjoy each other’s company, and when you spend a little time around them, it shows.
