rom its very first day in 1995, the Function 4 Junction Show ‘N Shine and Cruise has been mostly about the craft of auto restoration, but also about taking in the sights while talking with people who know a lot about classic and custom cars, having some fun and doing good things for the local community. It began with a cruise along River Road and a show held in whatever empty field was available. A decade
later the show had grown so large that it needed the football field at Junction City High before it settled onto the side streets of downtown while the Cruise had already taken over the main drag.

Function Junction
As many as 10,000 people show up each year to get a close look at more than 400 parked classic cars and watch as perhaps 600 cruisers roll through town. It’s become the second-largest event held in Junction City and one of the most popular car shows held anywhere in Oregon. On a Friday evening in 2018, the first open Cruise with newer models began motoring up and down the streets of Junction City. The Show still goes on all day Saturday in the heart of town

while awards are still presented in the afternoon, but then everything changes as we all get ready for the main event – the classics roll out and start Cruisin’ ! After the Show is finished, whole families of spectators start to line both sides of Hwy. 99 as they wait for vintage models of automobiles by dozens of makers to start cruising up and down the four lanes through town until darkness falls. None of that happened in 2020, however, as the global pandemic response prohibited large gatherings in public and required people to keep some distance between themselves and others. Permits and permissions from authorities were not not likely to be granted, and the F4J directors wisely chose to cancel the event instead of trying to modify it to fit the ever-changing circumstances. A new year has arrived and most of those restrictions have been removed. With the support from classic car fans, dozens of local businesses, a half-dozen local service groups and the months-long efforts of a small army of volunteers, the 2021 Function 4 Junction hopes to create another memorable weekend for everyone!

Staging the Show & Cruise
hroughout the years, a core group of hard-working volunteer crews make the Function 4 Junction possible. With two evening Cruises to manage now, those crews are doing more than ever before. You can see them all over during the Show, but our volunteers are especially visible during an evening Cruise. They’re the folks who control car and foot traffic, staff the barricades and keep everything flowing in the right direction. They donate their time to monitor the parking areas, provide information to cruisers and guests and register every vehicle for each event. As the non-profit Function has grown, so has the need for more volunteers. Positions are sometimes available on the board of directors for anyone willing to help with the planning and staging work that goes on all year. There’s never enough volunteers available to cover all the events, even though working at the Show or during a Cruise can be more fun than being part of the crowd. F4J board members work with several local volunteer groups to sell raffle tickets and distribute this free magazine in the weeks before the Function. Board members supervise the crews who set everything up early in the morning and then clear the

downtown streets after everyone else has gone home. Function Our local and regional business Junction community plays a huge part by advertising in this magazine and contributing a range of goods and www.Function4Junction.com services too long to list. Some downtown storefronts close up shop and take the day off to enjoy the fun while others stay open, get very busy and have their best single day of sales all year. It makes a successful day for everyone – the 400+ classic cars in the Show, the 600 or so autos that will roll around town during the Cruises, and an estimated 10,000 visitors who come into town to watch. A special thanks goes out once again to Kathy Tourtillott of ODOT; Jennifer Paugh at Lane County; Junction City employees Gary Kaping and Kitty Vodrup; Brandon Nicole of the city Fire Dept.; and all of the city’s Public Works crews. They make sure we comply with all the rules that apply when staging an event of this size. Junction City Police Dept. staff always do a terrific job of keeping the event safe for all, with special thanks this year to Chief Bob Morris. Each year a wide variety of youth group

volunteers all play a big role with the demanding job of controlling the cruise route as well as helping with the hard, unglamorous, late night/ early morning task of cleaning up. US Bank, Oregon Neurosport Physical Therapy and Pacific Continental Bank all donate the use of their parking lots for staging the Show ‘N Shine. Citizens Bank and Hagen Hamilton Insurance offer space for the Cruise announcers. while DariMart lets us use the landscaped area at their headquarters to photograph the award winners. That list goes on and on. We want to thank every one of our sponsors, large and small, for their financial and logistical support. The people who live and work in our small town deserve the most recognition. Local residents seldom complain about the inconvenience of street closures and they exhibit great patience over the dawn-to-dusk presence of so many visitors. Without their support the F4J would be a much smaller event and nowhere near as much fun for everyone...

President’s Corner
fter one summer lost to the global pandemic, the biggest car show and cruise in the Willamette Valley will return in 2021 to fill the streets of Junction City again during the traditional first weekend in June. The format and schedule for the Show ‘N Shine hasn’t changed; as always, cars of any year, make or model are eligible to enter our all-day Saturday street show. In recent years more than 400 cars of every description have lined the closed side streets of downtown Junction City for your up-close inspection. As always, you’ll be able to vote for your favorite to win the People’s Choice award. Also continuing with tradition, the Saturday evening Cruise that follows the Show ‘N Shine is restricted to any make or model of automobile from the year 1974 or older. Once again, no 4-wheel drive vehicles or motorcycles are allowed in the Saturday Cruise. This year will mark the fourth Friday evening Cruise, which is open to vehicles of any make, model or era, from the newest car on the market today to the oldest classic that can still roll down a road. 4-wheel drive vehicles and motorcycles are welcomed in the Friday Cruise. You can still go to www.function4junction.com to find registration forms and information for all of our events. One good change – your credit card can be used online for any and all registrations, purchases and donations, which will make those transactions easier for everyone. As with all F4J events, a majority of the proceeds will again be used to support our college scholarship fund for local residents. This year we will hold our usual raffle in support of that great cause and other local programs. So we are back, and we hope see all our old friends and make some new ones this year! Right man, right town, right time Larry Crowley is woven into the history of Junction City
by Rob Lafferty
If you want to take control of the streets of a small town in order to stage a car show and cruise, it certainly helps to have a mayor who appreciates classic automobiles and remembers cruising Main Street on Saturday night – like we all did when we were younger. Larry Crowley was just that right person at the right time to help the Function grow into one of the biggest car events in Oregon. He stepped into the role of mayor following a resignation in 2003, then chose to resign in 2007 due to poor health. During his years Larry died later that same year. as mayor, Larry In addition to being a Tiger posted his greeting Alumni Scholarship donor to Function guests in himself, several other donations the local newspaper were made to that fund in Larry’s before the event. name after his passing.
He remains very well-remembered by folks all around Junction City. Mayor Michael Cahill mentioned him during his opening address to the City Council in 2015: “Municipal Judge Thomas Fishburn once told me, ‘Mike, justice served locally is justice better served.’ Over time I came to see what he and former Mayor Larry Crowley already knew – our citizens sometimes make mistakes and it is better if their peers deal with them than someone from some other city.” Larry’s sense of humor included making fun of himself, as he once posed wearing only a top hat and a smile for one of the popular “Men of the Long Tom Grange” calendar series. ‘‘He has absolutely loved Junction City” said Linda Crowley, Larry’s wife of four decades before she pased in 2018. “Whether or not people agreed with his decisions, he put a lot of time and thought into A memorial light post stands just outside the front door of the JC Police Department building with a plaque commemorating Larry Crowley’s work as police commissioner during his 26 years in local government service.

I brought it to my shop and put power steering in it and swapped the 4-speed out for an automatic transmission.” ~ Corrie Lucas, F4J President being mayor, so having to actually resign was one of the hardest things he’s ever done.’’ Larry was also known for his black 1968 Ford F150 pickup truck, which he used often during his decades of volunteer service to the community.
He sold it to local resident Jerry Purkerson in the early 1990”s, but it turned out that the family liked that truck as much as he did. Their actions prove that. Angie bought the truck back from Purkerson in 2004 and had it fully restored before
giving it to her dad as a present. One of Larry’s granddaughters even has a tatoo of the truck on her arm. The truck is a a small, moving memorial to a man much loved who gave back to his community at least as much as he received.

Sarah Fay and Mike Reel tell the story of their three rides: “The grey Dodge 2012 Ram 3500 is Mike’s daily; he’s owned it for six months. It’s one of our workhorses used to tow our toy hauler or kids!
“The 1970 Chevelle – known to us as Trudy – is our Summer Cruiser. We adopted her four years ago with 43K original miles; she currently sits around 55K. She enjoys long summer cruises to Reno for Hot August Nights or Tacoma for Wings and Rides. The kiddos even enjoy taking Trudy to get ice cream on nice summer nights.
“The green Dually (Fancy) is Sarah’s daily, also a 2012 Ram 3500. We bought her a few months ago out of Missouri. Flew in Friday, purchased Saturday morning, made it home Sunday night. Sarah has been looking for said truck for years now, patiently waiting for the ‘right’ one.”
“This 1968 Mustang is called Da Beast,” said Margaret Foster about her husband’s car. “ Jim is the second owner, but it was his first car. He’s had it nearly 45 years now.” Heather Hess is the daughter of the late Dan Alley, former president of the F4J, shown here with Heather’s 1966 Mustang.

1949 Willys Jeepster Bill & Rebecca Cozart of Keiser
“Impeccably clean inside and out” is not a typical phrase one hears about any Willys-made vehicle, and certainly not for a 72-year-old Jeepster, but it’s the perfect description of the 2019 winner of the memorial President’s Choice award. contact with the award winners from Keizer, Bill and Rebecca Cozart, before we could interview them about their unique vehicle.
The Jeepster was designed by Brooks Stevens for 1948 as a four-passenger soft-top meant to attract soldiers returning from WWII. That wasn’t as popular a
draw as expected, however, sales were disappointing and fewer than 20,000 models were produced over a three-year span. Willys brought out an upgraded Jeepster in 1949 with an optional

Given the upgrade under the hood that you can see in the Cozart Jeepster, speed and power problems have probably been solved. It’s almost certainly a more comfortable ride than when it was in original condition. “For me it was an eye-catching vehicle right way,” saif F4J president Corrie Lucas, who made the Willys just his second-ever choice for the award that honors former president Dan Alley. “Once I started looking at all the details, I could see how well-thought-out the custom build was executed. It’s a clean and one-of-a-kind convertible that looks like a lot of fun to cruise around in.”

t Junction City High School’s drive-in graduation ceremony in 2020, the Bauer family rode in what was certainly the oldest and probably the most unique vehicle seen that day. Bill Bauer was behind the wheel of his rich blue 1915 Studebaker SD-4 as it came to a stop near a podium on the school’s football field. From there he could watch his granddaughter, Lilly Bauer, receive her diploma. Bill said he Below: Lilly Bauer steps out of her grandfather’s 1915 Studebaker SD-4 during her June 13, 2020, graduation ceremony at Junction City High School. left it up to Lilly to decide which car to use for the ceremony because he actually has two classic automobiles that are both a century in age. “She wanted the Studebaker,” he said with a chuckle. The Studebaker, which still sports its original upholstery, sits beside a 1921 Model T in Bauer’s garage (in Alavadore)?. Both cars have given him many great memories over the decades he has driven and shown them. Bill bought the Model T back in 1964 when it was already 43 years old, and he’s owned it for the remaining 57 years of its century-long existence. continued on page 34

In 1967, he drove it while courting his wife, Nancy, and he drives it still to this day. The Model T has made several trips to Crater Lake, the last being four or five years ago with a group of Model T fans from Roseburg. The car can reach a peak speed of about 40 mph on the highway, so those trips took a little longer than the usual drive. “This is historic stuff,” he said. “It’s amazing what they were able to put together over a hundred years ago.”
The Model T originally sold for $450. Henry Ford sold millions of the nowclassic vehicles from 1908 to 1927, and the Model T is still listed as one of the most popular automobiles ever sold.
The Studebaker company dates back to the mid19th Century when it manufactured wagons and buggies. The company began making cars in 1902, and several models they designed and built became instant classics. Bill said his 1915 Studebaker sold for $1,050 when new. He bought it in 1994 from a local seller. He said within days of the purchase, he started getting letters from would-be buyers living all around the world. He turned them all down. “I didn’t buy it to make money,” he said. Over the decades, Bill has spent a lot of time working on the cars. For most of those years he also ran the Alvadore Dryer, a wellknown local processing business for fruit and nuts that’s been owned by his family since his grandmother first bought it 1926. His two children run Alvadore Dryer now.

Bill belongs to the Horseless Carriage Club of Eugene and takes his cars to social events and picnics sponsored by the club. He used to own a Model A Ford as well until he sold it years ago, a decision he says he still regrets because he loves the feeling of working on historic automobiles. “I’ve been curious about mechanical things all my life,” Bill said. “The old classics were dependable rigs.”

Dan & Robyn Marsh caught our editor’s eye back in 2017 with their spotless, classic 1960 Chevrolet Impala. In 2019, the Show ‘N Shine judges selected that very same car as Best of Show.

classic Impala is one of a few iconic cars that evoke memories in just about everybody who sees it. This fully stock restoration of a 1960 Impala is one of those four-wheeled time machines that can take viewers back five or six decades with just a glance.

lives in LaPine now with his wife Robyn, but he came back to his roots in search of a dream car from those years. He found it sitting next to a barn in Veneta where it had been hidden under a tarp since 1985. Dan’s subsequent restoration was the first major work ever done on the vehicle. Here’s the story of that project in his own words: “I chose to build a ‘60 Impala partly because I was born in 1960 and partly because I remember my parents owning a black ‘60 Impala with a red interior. I always loved the wildlooking rear end of the car, the roof line and all the chrome and stainless. “Building a 1960 is not the easiest car, though. There are not a lot of restoration parts out there. Trim is almost impossible to find and replacement sheet metal is limited. “I acquired my Impala in September of 2012. I was really continued on pg 39

fortunate to find this ‘60 almost complete, although it was minus motor and tranny. The car had all the trim and despite its age was in very good condition. “When I got the car home I immediately started the teardown process. I removed the body from the frame and attached the body to a rotisserie. I completely disassembled the frame and sent it off to be powder-coated. With the frame out of the way I stripped the inside, outside and even the underneath of the car down to bare metal. “The ‘60 had never been repainted, so stripping off the original paint was fairly easy. The most time-consuming part was all the removal of the undercoating. The body was then coated with epoxy primer. I painted the underneath in singlestage paint. I completely assembled the frame with motor, transmission, rear end and air ride, then placed the body back on the frame. “Fine-tuning of the bodywork and paint was done by my long-time friend Jim Purcell, the owner of Lost in Time Restoration. I chose to go with the original color of Cascade green with a custom green for the roof, body accents and interior. Mckenzie Plating re-chromed the original bumpers and polished all the aluminum and stainless. Mr. C of Springfield built the healthy small block.” “Mike Starks, who I bought the car from, is a guru when it comes to 1960 Impalas and was helpful in supplying hard-tofind parts. Special thanks go to Robin, my wife, for supporting
me in building the car and never asking me how much!” Editor Scott McKinley talked about choosing Dan’s car for his award back in 2017: “To me, 1960 was the start of the best decade in automotive history and this Impala shows that – low, wide and sleek body styles with designs and trim that reflect the coming of the Jet Age. Full-size Chevys were frequently described as ‘jet smooth’ in their advertisements then.”
After winning Editor’s Choice in 2017, Dan changed the engine (above) to the setup shown below – and took home the top prize.

Some automobiles are immediately identifiable - not because they were widely sold models or highly advertised, but because they offer a distinct profile accented by unique trim pieces and accessories. The Chevy Deluxe convertible is certainly that kind of car. but he and Nancy went to Summer’s on that day in 2017 to see a Model T the dealer thought he might like. “I wasn’t interested in the Model T, but my wife and daughter both fell in love with the ‘51.” Gary said. “We made an offer, but the fellow who was handling
the sale wanted to do some work on it first. He lowered it, removed the skirts and switched from whitewalls to low-profile tires and spoke wheels. Nancy went back to look at it and she didn’t want it that way.” In the end, Nancy convinced him
to restore it to stock condition and sell it for the price she had first offered. Aside

and a new tonneau cover was made. With all of its attention to detail, the car keeps winning awards wherever the Burnetts enter it in a show. You
might have seen it rolling down the road yourself, as they like to cruise in the Chevy and drove it to a half-dozen shows in the Willamette Valley during that first summer. “Our dog Brandy really loves to ride in the car, too,” Nancy added. “We did win Best of Show at Albany, where they hold a show in the city park and the cars are judged by all the participants. We also won Best 50’s and Best Convertible in Florence, along with two other awards at Sweet Home in our first year.” You probably won’t see the Chevy again in 2021 – Gary, Nancy and Brandy had expected to bring a 1923 Model T dump truck to last year’s Show – but there’s a pretty good chance you’ll see them with their truck in the awards ceremomy again this year.

A Beautiful Honey
Honey is a lovely Model A – and a fast little car, too story and photos by Edie Moro
‘Honey’ is beautiful. ‘Honey’ is also a little bit fast. Right now ‘Honey’ is the pride and focus of Junction City resident Randy Thom. Honey is his name for a 1931 Model A 2-door sedan that he’s known for a very long time. Thirty years ago, Randy rescued her rusted chassis, parts and frame from a barn in Marcola. Then about eight years ago Randy went through a divorce. Rather than start hanging out at bars like some other divorced friends of his had done, Randy decided to be more productive with his time and his money – so he started to work on Honey. Randy’s original plan was to ratrod the car using old parts. After he started working, however, he decided the car was too nice to do that. This meant that reconstructing Honey became much more expensive. Randy would do some work on the car, and then wait while he earned enough money to do more. All the fabrication work was done
in his mom’s garage on Royal Avenue in Eugene, where Randy had grown up. Almost all the work on the car was done by Randy and his longtime
friend, John Horstman. They had met when their kids were in grade school together in Junction City and became good friends. The two men were Cubmasters, Scout leaders and were in the Tiger Club together. In 2018 Randy moved Honey to Horsman’s workshop on the outskirts of Monroe to do the finish work. The two longtime friends did all the fabrication, body work, painting, and interior details themselves. Thom wanted to keep the original look of the Model A, but also wanted to use it as a hot rod. He widened the back fenders by 4 ½ inches, tapering down to a half-inch at the front end of the running board. “Model A’s mounts are hot bolted on the original frame,” Randy explained. “When John and I were building this, we removed all the mounts and made our own with quick releases. This allows the fenders and running
49
boards to come off to make it more of a hot rod.” It also allows larger tires on the back end. The whole process of removing them takes about an hour. The two men channeled the body of the auto and dropped it over the frame, lowering it. The interior is about four inches higher as a result. Another change was the top. Model A’s normally had a rag top stapled on. “We ran around from Portland to Cottage Grove where we found a 1995 Land Rover, and that’s where the metal top came from,” said Randy. He added drip rails around it and even finished underneath the car, “something most guys don’t do,” he said. Honey may resemble a Model A circa 1928 to 1932, but under the beautifully
refinished exterior are all the upgrades that turn her into a fast hot rod: disc brakes all the way around; four-link suspension with coil overshocks for a smoother ride; a 5½” drop suspension I-beam with rack and pinion steering plus a ratchet shifter for everyday use and for racing. Honey has a 350 Chevy engine. The transmission is a 700 R4 that has been built so Randy can go faster. Honey has a Ford 9” completely floating rear end that is better for speed. Thom
also installed a brake line locker. A push of the button allows build-up of RPMs so when the button is released, the car shoots forward. The muffler was done by Kenny at Junction City Muffler, who Randy

continued from page 47 credits with doing “phenomenal work”. Randy also installed a line locker to enable quick starts. “You push the brake, then push a button to lock the wheels,” he explained. When you’re ready to race, you push the button to launch the car forward.” Honey is beautiful because of her classic chassis. She’s also beautiful for the way her exterior and interior were restored. Randy and John used Magnum Green for the base exterior paint, over-spraying it with Motherof-Pearl Gold. All the exterior trim is a black cherry shade. In the sunlight, the over-spray makes the chassis sparkle and the trim look like bronze. They removed the front bumper and put a bar across the front of the radiator. They finished the exterior by putting LED lights around the headlamps and under the chassis. Inside, the dash is maple and cherry woods with the rest of the interior finished in red oak. The two side windows roll down and up automatically. The front windshield pops out, stock for Model A’s. When ‘Honey’ is put on display, she will be joined by a 1930 Ingo bicycle that Randy found in his grandfather’s
basement. The bike has an oblong back tire and is propelled forward by the rider bouncing up and down. Randy is hunting down inner tubes for the tires, explaining that parts are hard to come by. He’s seen only four other Ingo bikes, all of them shown on the American Pickers TV show. Randy first became involved with the F4J about 15 years ago. “We were trying to make some money for the Scouts,” he said. F4J president Dan Alley arranged a donation for the Scouts who put up all the signage for the cruise’s detour route. Randy became a board member, and served for nearly a decade. Once he started Castaway Pest Control he had to drop out because the F4J falls on the same weekend as a pest control owners meeting in Bend, which he must attend to keep his certification. His work with the Scouts got Randy into another pastime – Dutch oven cooking, introduced to him by David Vaughan.
51
He bought one of Vaughan’s books and now has five ovens in different sizes. He’s the official cook when he and his friends go elk or deer hunting. “Anything you can cook in your oven, I can cook in a Dutch oven,” stated Randy. Even if he can’t attend the Function, his kids will bring Honey to the Show. As for Honey being fast? Randy is still working on the linkage, but once that is good to go, he’s planned a few challenge races with some fast-driving friends!

In 2017 and again in 2018, a car that Scott selected for his Editor’s Choice award came back in a subsequent year to win another major award. In 2019, his choice won two awards the same day. Here’s what he had to say about the Safari: “Usually when I think about station wagons and car shows the 1955, ‘56 and ‘57 Chevys come to mind, especially the Nomad model. But taking a good look at this Pontiac it was easy to see why it became the Editor’s Choice winner. It is absolutely showroom perfect, with beautiful paint, lots of chrome trim and a wonderful interior. This car really has it going on in all the right places. If you ever get a chance to see this car up close, take a good, long look. I don’t think you will be disappointed.”

Bill Haney, photographer
Bill Haney certainly took more photos at the Function 4 Junction during the past dozen years than anyone else who owns a camera. In a typical year Bill
would submit more than a thousand excellent photographs for us to sort through – all raw and unedited but with a folder of his favorites. On this page you can see just a few. Bill walked the length and breadth of the Show every year, in the morning hours when the light
was best. He spent a lot of time talking with anyone who offered a comment or asked a question. He was the right person to walk with through a crowd – a loud talker with big laugh who laughed a lot. Along with a gift for making folks want their picture taken, Bill had an array of lenses an a wealth of experience to make very difficult photos like the three at left seem like deceptively simple shots. 2018 was the last year that Bill photographed the Function. Before the 2019 show began he was too ill to walk and passed a few months later. He will be missed...

Austin Gaddis of Monroe and his fiance, Whitney Harper, came dressed to complement his 1926 Model T, which may well have been the oldest car in the 2019 Cruise. Austin tells some of the car’s history: “It was purchased new in Oklahoma by a fella who drove it to Myrtle Creek sometime around 1928. After that he moved to Glendale in the early ‘50s, where it was painted and used as a Shriners car. My grandpa bought it in ‘81 or ‘82 from the original owner. In ‘95 it was repainted to how it appears now. I inherited it after he passed that same year. It still retains the original wood floors, original wood body framing, and original wood wheels as well as 100% of the original sheet metal.”

In 2019 the F4J Friday Cruise was just three years old and growing fast, although it still had a long way to go before the crowd could match the the thousands of classic car lovers who show up for the Cruise on Saturday evening. The loss of opportunity to cruise in 2020 might have slowed that

growth just a little, but the demand for a chance to cruise newer cars continues to run strong. All makes and models of cars from any era are invited to enter the Friday evening Cruise, including 4WD vehicles and motorcycles. With the downtown streets open for cruisers only, the slow pace allows for a time-warp
comparison between working antique automobiles that roll the road right next to showroom-quality new models by the same maker. It doesn’t matter if you’re a genuine wrencher or a gearhead or if you just like to talk about cars, you’ll find plenty of other folks sitting nearby who feel the same as you...

From its first run in 1995 the F4J has been a showcase for the craft of auto restoration, but it’s also about having a full day and evening of fun, taking in the scene, talking about classic and custom cars while raising money to do some good things for the community in the process. As many as 10,000 people come to the
Show. Whole families and spectators of all ages line both sides of the four lanes of Hwy. 99 that run through town, watching as vintage vehicles of every make and model roll those roads until darkness falls. They weren’t able to celebrate in 2020, but a big crowd is expected to restart the tradition in 2021...
