ACT II Mission Statement Act II is an inter-generational group on the move to model intentional discipleship through prayer, study, fellowship and service.

Fellowship Carol's Corner Contributed by Carol Holloway, Fellowship Committee Chairman Lots of great opportunities for fellowship are scheduled for spring 2012. Super Bowl parties will be held at Carol Holloway's and Carol and Harry Smith's homes. Act II has reserved tables for the Music Ministry's Broadway Bound dinner and show which will be $20 per person for a great time. Proceeds will benefit the Youth Choir. We have also scheduled a roadtrip to see Ragtime at UCF with a soiree at Mary Palmer's home afterward. Sign up for any of these events on February 5 in the courtyard. For more information

Members of Act II helped the South Street ministry host a breakfast for over 200 children and parents at South Street. Delicious casseroles, fruit, bagels were provided while everyone was entertained by activities such as crafts, cookie decorating and music. Singing of carols and a visit from Santa Claus made the morning a great success for all.

Human Trafficking Awareness Day Carol Welker, one of our active members of Act II, has been recognized for her relentless and selfless service to combat human trafficking. To learn more

Cross Currents Book reviews that can help you grow spiritually and intellectually Cross Currents is about books Art Cross has recently read and reviewed. For the past ten years, Art has been studying positive aging and spirituality in our post-50 years. Each newsletter will include one or two references for you on living your best life possible. Art and his wife, Lee, are both former professors of education and active members of this church since 1990. Both are involved throughout

the church as Sunday school teachers and other services. Lee is beginning as Education Director for South Street Ministry while Art continues his leadership training for federal employees through Cross Learning Associates. Both have a lifelong passion for learning and growth at all ages.

Things Hidden: Scripture and Spirituality, by Richard Rohr Rohr is a Franciscan priest who has written widely on spiritual growth. In this latest book, he makes a case for a newfound appreciation of how scripture should be more integrated with spirituality. He shows the continuity of patterns between Old and New Testaments, including themes and continuities across both. A fascinating argument is made for three "code " words: water, blood and bread. Water signifies God's outpouring love to us and Jesus' description of "living water" to the woman at the well. Blood is the transformative theme of the resurrection. And bread indicates the abundance given, like manna for the Israelites. He sees the Bible as a "school for relationships," in which exposure to "otherness" is how we learn to love. Mostly, he urges both/and, as in both inner growth as well as social justice. And he makes the strongest case that God is about "divine union" rather than personal perfection. My reason for sharing this is I think reading it makes for a more enlightened laity. It is akin to a visit from a friendly neighbor who sits with us in a front-porch kind of conversation. And "things hidden" will come into full view. Finally, this book is a must-read for any of us who are moving towards the fuller spiritual realm of our continuing journey as "growing-ups."

Study Recent or upcoming events to grow spiritually and intellectually

Study Opportunities Contributed by Michael Kormanicki, ACT II Study Leader Act II will be joining the rest of the church in a special Lenten study, Praying for Friends and Enemies, by Jane Venard. The study will be offered beginning February 29 immediately following the Wednesday night dinners.

Thoughts from Gary provided by Gary Rideout

ACT II's 50+ ministry at First UMC, Winter Park is not like your father's "senior adult ministry." The message of ACT II is that being 50+ does not mean it's a time when you must get out the rocking chair and the quilting frame. We are not suggesting that this is what your fate is when you get to be that age. The message of ACT II is that there is no one way you have to be when you are in your "golden years." Perhaps your golden years include a golden Harley-Davidson. That is what is wonderful about being in the "golden years" in this day and time. There is no one cookie-cutter way to life. That is why the ACT II ministry at the church is so important. Its message to share is that it is not a time of getting older but living life fuller through Christ. This age doesnot mean a time to coast, but a time to rev up your life. And the ways to do so are myriad. From bungee-jumping to shuffleboard.

This is the challenge of ACT II - providing events and programs that reach the countless interests of those that comprise the 50+ generation. We need your input to help us plan events that would interest you. The qustion is "Now that I am in the 50+ generation, what do I really want to do or learn?" Let us know, and let ACT II help set it up! Read more Blessings, Gary
