PRESENTATION

4

In the following pages listing my work experiences, it will be demonstrated that my career path as a professional, researcher and activist has allowed me to acquire knowledge in infographics - and much more!

My favorite part of completing a project to present is to synthesize the learnings by making visual supports. This part allows me to take a step back and have fun through creation. From a young age, I have created models and posters enthusiastically in order to share my thirst for knowledge. This way of complementing my oral presentations was often appreciated by different types of listener.

This talent to take images to life was later refined with an education in visual arts and environmental design. Once again, it was necessary to skillfully represent large-scale projects through various physical and digital mediums. Surrounded by very skilled and talented people, I learned to use several software programs to help me tell stories the best way for the needs.

In 2022, I decided to start a master’s degree in environmental sciences, more specifically in urban studies. I realized that communicating messages to encourage political or environmental action is very important to create change, but I also noticed that in the scientific community, infographics are not always a priority. Many infographics circulate with errors in information layout, and I’ve always had an eye for detecting graphic errors.

I can now confirm that the research field is more constraining than I thought, and before leaving my mark on it, I would like to work with people who, like me, value this type of outreach. We must not forget how important it is in an era when the population consumes more and more media and relies on it as a source of information. If I can be part of a team that values knowledge sharing through reliable data as much as I do, finding ways to express complex ideas will not be an issue.

QUEER UQÀM

The first major challenge in creating the visual identity of the organization was to integrate all the colors of the rainbow into a logo. The request from members was to include the most recent inclusive flag, and other flags of sexual and gender diversity if possible. After several attempts, I realized that the different symbols had to be simplified to make a logo with a clear and concise message, but this loss of information could have demonstrated a lack of inclusiveness.

While doing the queer tours at UQÀM, some pavilions had gendered bathrooms vandalized by students. The pictograms representing men and women had been covered in paint so that people who do not conform to the gender binary could access them safely. This spirit of rebellion for a need for a safe space so important and necessary gave me an idea.

Pride started as a riot

This quote is said in many protests and pride events. It reminds us that marginalized groups are not listened to and must use pressure tactics to get their message across. Radical or illegal actions, within oppressive structures, can be unjustly attributed to people who promote values of acceptance, peace and love.

In the context of creating the committee at UQÀM, being part of the executive takes a lot of patience, as all ideas must be approved by a decentralized administrative system. This causes a lot of frustration for members who want a sustainable committee they can rely on. Not being an organization with many means and resources, pushing students to invest in our recognition process is very important. The goal is to help them understand that we are going to create our community and take ownership of spaces eventually, without them being clandestine.

THE PINS

Brand identity and event planning Queer UQÀM

As mentioned previously, including all flags in the logo was not possible, but finding another way to show our colors at events was at the heart of my reflections. During the preparation of our first meetup, it was mentioned that a macaron punch would be available to us. I then seized this opportunity to create a round version of pride flags to have macarons representing many identities of our members so they can proudly wear like them like badges.

As a part of the sexual diversity, these are issues that affect me directly and that I am passionate about. I do not hesitate to take time outside of my personal life and put a little money towards this cause, because it is very dear to my heart.

I have participated in discussions and meetings to plan all the association’s events since its birth. My ideas for this brand go beyond visual identity alone, and they must be constrained to a small or non-existent budget.

My roles are various, but the most important for the future of the committee is to maintain good relations with subscribers through our social media networks and create connections in the community with potential future partners. I would gladly receive any interest in funding this association with opened arms.

SYMBIOSIS

The Symbiosis project reinterprets the integration of plant lighting in residential spaces based on interspecies relationships. To strengthen the harmonious cohabitation between plants and their host, Symbiosis aims to give freedom to the plant, the lighting object and its system in a fair balance of appropriating the place. Servitude is a characteristic associated with the plant when it is in an indoor environment, but the potential for wonder that its daily presence has on us is undeniable. A celebration of nature in architectural spaces begins with highlighting its uniqueness, its growth, and the diversity of forms in which it unfolds.

Failing to find a way to control or master this resource, allowing it to flourish, form and deform over time is crucial for its appreciation.

12
Product design Symbiosis

Given its particular use and function, Symbiosis had to maintain pure and simple forms. Considering the quantity of components along the luminaire, this could easily seem overloaded. That is why the materials also had to be similar in color and finish. And finally, the mechanisms had to be simple and effective, both due to time and workforce constraints, but also for ease of use.

Florence St-Louis Portfolio 2020 —2023 13

The idea behind Symbiosis first emerged from a personal desire to keep one of my exotic plants, an allamanda, alive. Its etiolation toward the window suggests it had reacted badly to the lack of sunlight due to the winter season. This flowering plant needs a direct light source of 16 to 18 hours per day to thrive well and the Nordic conditions in Quebec were clearly insufficient.

One of the challenges of horticultural lighting is that it is often in demand in industries where performance and speed are prioritized. It dictates the visual aspect on the market, even for residential use. A person can want the well-being of their plants when bringing them inside in winter without wanting an encumbering lighting system in their home. In this particular case, the object has a standardized form dictated by mass horticulture practices and we should not be subject to it.

Several modifications were made in the workshop, including:

— Cutting, scribing, manually bending and forming an aluminum sheet.

— Bending and welding the steel rods used for the stand.

— Cutting, punching and spot welding the steel pieces for the clamps connected to the reflectors.

DIY STUDIO

In 2020, during my Object and Object Systems Design course supervised by Guillaume Sasseville, I had COVID-19 and had to do a home photo shoot to express two ideas related to light. These photos were taken with my phone and edited in Photoshop.

The Fireplace photo series comes from a story written by Julie Philippon, a classmate. It represents a warm experience next to the light of a fire in an indoor fireplace on a cold day.

A Starry Night is an anecdote from a hiking trip that happened to me as a teenager. I decided to tell a story where the lack of light, deep in the forest, remains an intensely fearful moment ingrained in me.

The assignment required demonstrating lighting effects by experimenting with physical models, then validating them through photography. Then, the concept had to be represented through diagrams and axonometric drawings.

THE FIREPLACE

The fireplace provides a dynamic, playful, warm and melancholy light. A fireplace in a home is such a sought-after feeling that it is artificially reproduced for the sole reason of wonder. The phenomenon that fascinates me the most personally is the reflection of this light on adjacent objects.

This makeshift installation was created using recycled materials I had at home. The red cardboard, for example, comes from a reused shoebox.

Being resourceful and making do with the tools at my disposal has always been a great strength of mine. In my opinion, recycling or reusing when possible is an ethical responsibility that all designers should take seriously. It is a duty towards the environment, regardless of the budget at our disposal.

A STARRY NIGHT

‘‘[…] on the ground, the tree trunks had formed bluish shadows that kept deforming and elongating, and soon, I found myself bathed in darkness with only a starry ceiling to keep me company.”

shadows in the forest. The night can be unforgiving for living beings in this environment, but there is a certain beauty in these shadows cast upon the textured ground.

The purpose of this project was to overcome a bad memory of the gloom at nightfall. It is the only time in my life that the darkness almost proved fatal for me and my family. The cycle of day and night in the forest should not be underestimated, and this story, if you ever hear it one day, is proof of that.

THE HOUSE OF MIRRORS

To experiment with studio photography and reflections, I staged a scene in an improvised scale model with openings, different textures and finishes. The scale model implies that this could be a contemplative architectural setting with the integration of the human scale in a surreal space.

THE CATALOG

A web resource to inspire collective initiatives

The concept of green alleys gave Montrealers the opportunity to collectively take ownership of a public or semi-private space and make it their own. This allows each block to develop its own identity, brings people together and fosters a sense of community within the neighborhood. These values can be transposed to rework generic spaces like parking lots, avoiding the formation of heat islands in the summer and reducing car presence.

This resource would have the ability to convert urban parking spaces into social spaces, with the will of city dwellers and the help of an online resource. The Catalog, which is actually an interactive encyclopedia listing several small and large-scale project suggestions, would be partly funded by the government to provide tools for citizens who want to mobilize to create a space for their community.

The Catalog would provide, among other things, several instructions for building and creating multifunctional and retractable furniture, with a list of plants that can be ordered and planted. This site, freely accessible to all, makes it possible to provide all the necessary tools

to inspire initiatives of all sizes. In addition, by assigning a furniture color to each neighborhood, it reinforces a sense of identity.

This team project was completed in two days as part of the 2019 design charrette competition at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. There was a lot of freedom allowed for the final submission format. So we opted for a scenography model that staged our explanatory video. The proposed furniture plans were not made for this project. It was only about finding a solution to the unused urban heat islands.

ILLUSTRATIONS

In addition to my talent for painting, doing illustrations for special projects has always been motivating for me. Creating vector drawings on Illustrator goes beyond logo design. It can represent a message, a research concept or architectural views. In an academic context, you will see how doing illustrations for these three purposes has been significant.

HIDDEN WORD

In the Graphic Communication course supervised by LuisErnesto Trépanier in 2021, my final poster, on the left, had to subtly integrate a word. After doing several experiments using three-dimensional perspectives, I wanted to represent this word while also hiding it.

would have been generated with the same illustration style as shown above. In the image, the focus is on the feet, as the typical profile of a group of respondents goes to the market to buy their groceries by walking.

My idea was to create a mandala where each square shape represents a cycle. In this case, it was about determining the time spent grocery shopping on a typical day. Depending on the different means of transportation used to get to and from the grocery store, the colored bars would represent the total time of the process.

AXONOMETRY AND PLANS

In the 1:100 Scale Design Studio course supervised by Philippe Lupien in 2020, my task was to make two-dimensional drawings of the Casa das Canoas by Oscar Niemeyer, the residence of a highly renowned modern Brazilian architect and urban planner.

To pay tribute to his selfdesigned home for himself and his family, I drew an axonometry, plans and sections based on a 3D model of the building. Then, the drawings were refined to overlay several conceptual schemes.

After an in-depth analysis and interpretation of the spaces, the function of the different rooms had to be reviewed according to:

— Circulation

— Served spaces and servicing spaces

— Spaces for receiving guests, family quarters and intimate spaces

— Datum
