Antonio Domene, vicepresidente de Kimitec Group “Hay un deadline al que las grandes del sector no van a llegar”

E

n plena crisis por la pandemia, y con el cambio profundo que supondrán las nuevas estrategias de sostenibilidad de la UE en el agro, desde Fruit Today nos preguntamos si es posible y necesario mantener la I+D. La ‘Estrategia sobre Biodiversidad’ y ‘De la Granja a la Mesa’ plantean importantes reducciones en fitosanitarios, y Freshfel o Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias adelantan el encarecimiento de las producciones. ¿Es viable una agricultura más verde sin perjudicar el ‘bolsillo’ del agricultor?

Tal y como está articulado actualmente el sistema agroalimentario, en el que la dependencia de los químicos es prácticamente absoluta y ante el escenario que plantea la UE de reducirlos en un 50% en 2030, es comprensible que haya organizaciones que piensen así.

En MAAVi Innovation Center empleamos procesos biotecnológicos para la I+D de soluciones naturales en consonancia con la demanda del mercado que es ‘libre de residuos’, pero también, para la demanda del productor, que es ‘no me bajes la productividad’.

A Kimitec la quisieron comprar 47 veces en 2018/19. Hace poco Syngenta compró Valagro. ¿Está en marcha la carrera por la industria ‘verde’ de los biopestidas?

pero por lo que percibo del CEO, Félix García, su intención está muy lejos de vender. Conozco mucho de la oferta de valor de este tipo de compañías que están siendo adquiridas en el mercado internacional. El por qué se adquieren está claro. Hay un deadline al que las grandes del sector no van a llegar, y antes que desarrollar soluciones prefieren comprar compañías como la nuestra, que ya han recorrido ese camino. Tenemos un valor diferente a toda la oferta que hay.

Ahora estamos convirtiendo el MAAVi Innovation Center en un Hub de biotecnología que dé servicio a las distintas multinacionales agroquímicas y a grandes productores, pero desde nuestra autonomía e independencia.

En esta carrera por la industria verde de los biopesticidas pretendemos, a través del concepto de los MAAVi Labs, poner en valor nuestro MAAVi Innovation Center, popularizar el I+D, y llevarlo a la práctica con los grandes productores que quieran empoderarse y avanzar muy rápido en soluciones propias a sus problemas.

Frans Timmermans, vicepresidente ejecutivo de la CE, dijo que “El coronavirus ha revelado nuestra vulnerabilidad y la importancia de restablecer el equilibrio entre la actividad humana y la naturaleza”. ¿Cómo trabajáis para contribuir a ello?

Si esta crisis ha servido de palanca para algo es para darnos cuenta de que todo el sistema productivo debe trabajar para balancear el equilibrio con la naturaleza. Pero, si además despierta conciencias del impacto de nuestra huella sobre el entorno, perfecto, porque el desequilibrio no para de crecer. No debemos olvidar que las políticas del Pacto Verde y de la Granja a la Mesa se gestaron antes del coronavirus, aunque quizá ahora se puedan llegar a entender mejor, ya que hemos visto cómo el desequilibrio puede desencadenar situaciones inmediatas con consecuencias muy graves para los seres humanos.

En el caso de Kimitec, mantenemos la productividad de la agricultura con el desarrollo de herramientas naturales que realmente son una alternativa a las de química de síntesis. Algo que además es urgente, porque ya hace unos años que venimos observando cómo en el sector primario, el que da de comer a la gente, se están eliminando y reduciendo las moléculas de síntesis química disponibles para combatir plagas y enfermedades.

Es importante que nunca olvidemos que la productividad es clave porque, de lo contrario, seremos la región del mundo más sostenible, pero perderemos competi-

En nuestra nueva sede estamos implementando herramientas que nos permitan acortar plazos, creciendo en robótica, deep learning y sumando ciencias ómicas para desarrollar en tiempo y forma las herramientas naturales que necesitan los productores para mantener su competitividad. ¿Innova quien quiere o quién puede? ¿Les está afectando la crisis?

Hay que innovar de forma constante, no son necesarios ni grandes presupuestos ni grandes inversiones. Las empresas que en épocas de crisis minimizan la inversión probablemente se vean perjudicadas a la hora de salir.

A nosotros no nos está afectando por la parte de I+D, la estamos pasando con nota.

En el desarrollo internacional, obviamente, hemos tenido que adaptarnos y reconducir mucho a lo digital, pero aun así hemos

superado las expectativas.

At our head offices, we are implementing tools that allow us to shorten deadlines, growing in robotics, deep learning and adding ‘omic’ sciences to develop in time and form, the natural tools that the producers need to maintain their competitiveness.

In this race by the green industry of bio pesticides, we intend to use the concept of the MAAVi Labs to showcase our MAAVi Innovation Center, to make R&D more popular and to put it into practice with the large producers who want to become more powerful and move forward quickly in tailor-made solutions to their problems.

Is innovation for those who want to or just those who can? Is the crisis affecting them?

as expectativas creadas tras el fuerte repunte de consumo por la pandemia en la parte final de la anterior campaña no se han producido.

Europa, mercado que supera el 94% de las compras españolas, ha decepcionado en la demanda.

En esta coyuntura, los bajos calibres de la producción tampoco han proporcionado ningún atractivo de consumo de una fruta que, debido al calor y la humedad, se ha presentado, en ocasiones, como un pro10 Fruittoday

ducto reblandecido en los lineales de los supermercados.

Según explican diversas fuentes del sector, “la producción sudafricana siempre genera tensiones al principio y final de la campaña y aunque tuvimos la sensación de que iba a finalizar pronto, los importadores holandeses mantuvieron fruta en las cámaras y retrasaron el comienzo real del producto español”. A esta situación se suma que de “un día para otro y al acabar con la naranja sudafrica-

Y todo ello se produce en un contexto en el que el consumo per cápita de cítricos en España y en Europa muestra una línea descendente.

Diferentes rentabilidades No todas las variedades de la extensa campaña española mantienen los mismos resultados. Las Clementinas, que representan el 20% de la producción española y en el caso de la Comunidad Valenciana el 35%, acumulan según el consultor Paco Borrás, ocho años de pérdidas de los últimos 12. Sin embargo, los nuevos

The fact that “from one day to the next, when the South African oranges finished and the Spanish ones started, the purchase prices by the European distribution chain dropped by half and went from 1.20 € to 60 cents,” was an added problem.

The tasty morsel of the European market The European market is the most desired one by all the world operators. As relevant data, it must be emphasised that 70% of mandarins eaten on the Old Continent come from Spain. Likewise, 66% of the oranges that are eaten between October and May are Spanish.

However, in its own hemisphere Spain has competition from Morocco, Egypt and Turkey, countries where labour is very cheap. A clear example of this stiff competition is Egypt, which for the second time in its history will export more

fresh oranges than Spain. However, the Spanish production continues to be one of the safest in the world.

In the southern hemisphere, the main competitor is South Africa which, although it provides around 20,000 tonnes for re-export to Europe, now usually coincides in time.

Spanish marketing is not free from problems abroad and it has always claimed reciprocity in entry conditions with third countries, which do not have to use cold treatment.

The strength of the favourable situation of the Spanish production and that allows produce to be put on European supermarket shelves in 24 or 48 hours, at times also becomes a weakness as there are many bidders, which force prices to drop.

a mandarina tardía Nadorcott ha supuesto un cambio revolucionario en el campo y ha sido la solución para muchos agricultores.

Todo ello ha sido posible gracias al Club de Variedades Vegetales Protegidas (CVVP) que abandera la gestión de esta variedad protegida, un modelo abierto a aquellos agricultores que decidieron apostar por su plantación y su desarrollo.

La rentabilidad de esta mandarina es un hecho y su cultivo aporta muchas ventajas en términos de sostenibilidad y disminución de la huella hídrica, debido a su escasa necesidad de agua. Su fruto se caracteriza por un excelente sabor y homogeneidad.

El CVVP es una entidad que dirige, en España y Portugal, la gestión varietal de esta mandarina. Un club, que desde 2008, desarrolla un modelo de explotación con derechos de la propiedad cuya finalidad pasa por facilitar y mejorar la actividad de sus socios.

Además de gestionar las licencias, la entidad hace un seguimiento exhaustivo de los cultivos legales e ilegales, defensa, lucha contra el fraude y búsqueda total del rendimiento que facilita la valorización de sus variedades, entre ellas Nadorcott.

A pairing on the rise: Nadorcott and CVVP The late mandarin Nadorcott has brought about a revolutionary change in the fields and it has been the solution for many farmers.

All of this has been possible thanks to the Club de Variedades Vegetales Protegidas/CVVP (Protected Vegetable Varieties Club) that spearheads the management of this protected variety, an open model for farmers who decided to opt for its planting and development.

The CVVP is an entity that manages the variety management of this mandarin in Spain and Portugal. A club, which since 2008 has been developing a farming model with ownership rights aimed at making its associates’ activities easier and better.

The profitability of this mandarin is a fact and it brings many advantages with it in terms of sustainability and a decrease in the water footprint, owing to its little need of water. Its fruit are characterised by excellent flavour and homogeneity.

In addition to managing the licences, the entity carries out an exhaustive monitoring of the legal and illegal crops, defence, the fight against fraud and the search for total yield that helps with the valuation of its varieties, amongst which is Nadorcott.

Fruit Today euromagazine habló con Jorge García Monfort, cuarta generación de García Ballester, una de las sagas más arraigadas del sector frutícola valenciano

arcía nos desvela las claves de esta primera parte de campaña y comenta su apuesta por Leanri, una de las variedades del CVVP que mejores resultados está consiguiendo.

Mantener la rentabilidad de las empresas, con unos costes que se han duplicado y triplicado, es uno de los retos principales en esta temporada ¿Los precios actuales van esta línea?

¿Qué está pasando con la demanda europea de cítricos que mantiene un tanto sorprendida a todos los actores de la cadena por su escasa fluidez?

Creo que en esta campaña hemos partido de unas expectativas muy altas. Durante el verano llegamos a creernos que como la demanda seguía alta, el otoño mantendría la misma tónica. Y la verdad es que no ha sido así. La efervescencia por consumir vitamina C se ha pasado. Por primera vez en la historia llegamos a pensar que, aunque, la cosecha era más elevada, la demanda y los precios también lo podían ser. Y esto no ha sucedido así: el frío en Europa ha llegado tarde y los calibres no han acompañado. Se ha producido una situación que ha dejado un tanto sorprendidos no solo a los agricultores y almacenes, sino también a los propios importadores y los retailers. ¿Puede cambiar la situación respecto a los calibres en la segunda parte de la campaña?

El calibre siempre tiene que ver con la cantidad de fruta en un árbol. Y este año, por ejemplo, la Clemenules se ha quedado pequeña como consecuencia de los numerosos frutos en el árbol y de no haber contado con episodios de lluvia. La Navelina también ha sido pequeña. Sin embargo, en la segunda parte de campaña, la tónica

A nivel particular no tenemos fuerza, aunque sí existe, a veces, a nivel de sector; y eso nota cuando varios operadores de manera continua rechazan una oferta. La variedad Leanri del CVVP es nuestra última incorporación. Calculamos que alcanzaremos los 250.000 kilos y nuestros volúmenes seguirán subiendo porque contamos con plantaciones jóvenes: de 1, 2, 3 y 4 años. Leanri está proporcionando satisfacción al sector y ya hay una masa crítica para dar servicio a los supermercados, aunque ahora el grueso de la variedad son árboles de 1 y 2 años. Nosotros, junto con varias empresas, fuimos una de las compañías pioneras en apostar por esta variedad.

García Ballester es una de las firmas con más presencia en el mercado chino. ¿Cuál ha sido el comportamiento de éste y la incidencia de la pandemia?

The size always depends on the amount of fruit on a tree. And this year, for example, Clemenules have stayed small as a result of the large amount of fruit on the trees and also due to a lack of rainfall. Navelina are also small. However, in the second part of the campaign, this should change.

Navel Late will be larger. Rainfall is an important factor in the ripening period of the fruit and it has rained in November and December. With respect to Nadorcott, there is usually a more stable volume and I think that there will be medium-sized fruit.

Ballester’s option?

Maintaining the profitability of the companies, with costs that have doubled and tripled, is one of the main challenges in this season. Are the current prices in the same line?

García Ballester is one of the companies most present on the Chinese market.

How has this behaved and what has the incidence by the pandemic been?

No, it is very difficult to pass anything on to the supermarkets. The club varieties have been the stars for the past few years, what is García

The CVVP’s Leanri variety is our latest incorporation. We calculate that we will reach 250,000 kilos and our volumes will continue to rise because we have young plantations: of 1, 2, 3 and 4 years. Leanri is bringing satisfaction to the sector and there is already a critical mass available to serve the supermarkets, although now most of the variety is made up of trees that are 1 or 2 years old. We, along with several other companies, were pioneers in opting for this variety.

As all exporters, in March and April, due to COVID-19 we had problems because China sealed its borders tightly, but we will start exporting again in the third week of January if the goods reach the Brix necessary for this destination. Contrary to what is happening in Europe, it seems that China is maintaining its demand, in spite of the fact that most people don’t eat oranges in their homes, but rather in restaurants and hotels and they are even given as gifts.

Hispalco, sin límites

A pesar de su arraigada vocación internacional, Hispalco no para de crecer y retoma el mercado interior en su segmento más premium era generalizada, han reaccionado y han comenzado a solicitar calibres 4 y 5. No obstante, en menor volumen que en otras campañas. ¿Han incorporado nuevos mercados? ¿Qué fue decisivo para la entrada en el mercado nacional?

Durante los últimos dos años, hemos hecho un esfuerzo titánico por crecer, sin prisa, pero sin pausa. El departamento Hispalco 360 es la mejor prueba de ello. Ha permitido aumentar las importaciones de terceros países y esto, a su vez, ha favorecido la distribución de nuestras marcas en el mercado nacional. Si hay algo que caracteriza a Hispalco es ‘lo imposible’, es decir, la invención para hacer las cosas posibles. A pesar de ser una empresa internacional, el mercado nacional era algo que conocíamos muy bien desde nuestros orígenes y, ese conocimiento es lo que nos ha permitido retomarlo en el momento adecuado, sin hacer castillos en el aire, con la presencia adecuada y con seguridad.

Y como no podemos dejar de inventar, estamos estudiando el lanzamiento de una nueva marca de la que aún no podemos dar detalles, pero que estamos seguros, tendrá una buena acogida. ¿Qué volumen de cítricos, fresas y kakis comercializaron la pasada campaña?

“Estamos preparando el lanzamiento de una nueva marca”

Esta campaña está resultando especialmente difícil en cítricos porque los calibres son, en general, pequeños, ¿cómo se está desarrollando la temporada para una empresa volcada en el segmento premium?

Pues, con mucha dificultad. La falta de calibre ha limitado las ventas en algunos destinos, aunque no en todos. Hasta ahora, el mayor perjuicio lo hemos sufrido en Navelinas, pues no se podía contar con calibres 1 y 2, y en muy poca cantidad, con el 3.

Hispalco, unlimited In spite of its deep-rooted international vocation, Hispalco has not stopped growing and it is returning to the home market in its premium segment José Beltrán, manager of the company talks to Fruit Today about the current citrus fruit campaign and the other produce they work with.

This campaign is being particularly difficult for citrus fruit because the sizes are, in general, small. How is the season developing for a company that is devoted to the premium segment?

Well, with great difficulty. The smaller-sized fruit has limited sales in some destinations, although not in all of them. Up to now, the most damage has occurred in Navelinas, as there were no calibres 1 and 2, and only a very few 3. However, when our clients have realised that the lack of size was generalised, they reacted and have started asking for calibres 4 and 5.

Over the past two years, we have made an incredible effort to grow, slowly but surely. The Hispalco 360 department is the best proof of this.

It has allowed imports from third countries to be increased and this, in turn, has encouraged the distribution of our brands on the national market.

If there is one point that characterises Hispalco, it is ‘the impossible’, that is to say, creating new ideas to make things possible. In spite of being an international company, the national market was something we knew very well from our origins, and this knowledge has allowed us to come back to it at the right moment, without this being a pipe dream, with the correct presence and confidently.

En los últimos años, la compañía se ha abierto a nuevos productos, ¿continuará con esa tónica?

Of the five brands that you own, which one is showing the best results?

Siempre. Es, junto con la calidad, la otra insignia de Hispalco: inventar, crear, desarrollar… Ahora mismo, nos estamos centrando en la importación de aquellos productos que hemos comprobado tienen una buena aceptación, confeccionados en marca Monna Lisa® y Unicorn®, con independencia de su país de origen.

No es una tarea fácil, pero cada día aumentamos el catálogo de productos y confecciones que están teniendo buena acogida entre nuestros clientes tradicionales, en el mercado nacional y, también, en países emergentes.

We have Monna Lisa®, Lady Godiva®, Unicorn® and Hippie Chic®, in conventional produce and Hispalco_ bio® for ecological crops. The results of each brand depend on their age.

Monna Lisa® is, by far, the best known and appreciated brand. It has been on the market for almost 30 years and it is a real ‘object of desire’ for many people. However, against many strategic forecasts that were made

to us at the time, the other brands are working well, very well in fact, and we can say that they are consolidated.

The direct, constant contact that we have with the markets is making us increase our volume in the Unicorn® brand, at the expense of Lady Godiva®.

It is very complicated keeping up a premium quality standard in three brands at the same time. Hippie Chic®, on the other hand, is a brand to which our clients remain loyal. The qualityprice ratio is unbeatable. And as we really cannot stop inventing, we are studying the launch of a new brand about which we cannot yet give any details, but we are certain that it will be warmly received.

What volume of citrus fruits, strawberries and persimmons did you market in the last campaign?

Forecasts for this campaign.

Hispalco is not a company ruled by volume; quality is more important. And large amounts are usually incompatible with extra quality and gourmet produce. The land has the ‘bad habit’ of doing what it wants. There is also the demographic distribution, which indicates that gourmet produce is not for everyone, nor can it be on all the markets. The Hispalco 360 department is a direct result of this: distributing CAT. I produce in Hippie Chic®, and to a lesser extent, from the producer, at more reasonable prices. But as the subjectivity of our times lies in figures: this year we are producing around 12,000 tonnes, including citrus fruits, strawberries and persimmons, compared to the 10,000 tonnes in 2019.

In recent years, the company has opened up to new products; will it continue along these lines?

Always. It is, along with quality, Hispalco’s other flagship: inventing, creating, developing… Right now, we are concentrating on importing the produce that we have confirmed will be well received, prepared in the Monna Lisa® and Unicorn® brands, regardless of their country of origin.

This is not an easy task, but every day we are increasing our catalogue of products and preparations that are being warmly accepted by our traditional clients, on the national market and also, in emerging countries.

acho Juárez, responsable de la categoría en Anecoop, explica a Fruit Today estos vaivenes.

En esta temporada, en la que los costes productivos son mayores en campo y en almacén, mantener la rentabilidad es uno de los retos principales. ¿Los precios actuales están yendo en esta línea?

La campaña arrancó bien en cuanto a precios, pero la presión de producto y calibre ha hecho que se moderen, siendo en estos momentos algo más discretos que al principio. Aun así, puede haber rentabilidad si los aprovechamientos y la producción media por hectárea fuera buena.

En líneas generales la campaña transcurre bajo unos parámetros en los que la escasez de calibre es la tónica general. ¿De qué manera está afectando a Anecoop? ¿Se están desviando estos calibres hacia países del este?

Efectivamente, hay calibres pequeños por el atraso de las lluvias, y si bien es cierto que este año existe un mayor porcentaje de envío de estos calibres a los mercados del Este de Europa, la tendencia de estos países se dirige progresivamente hacia

Durante los meses de confinamiento el consumo de cítricos aumentó de manera considerable, ¿se ha acabado ese boom?

Arrancamos la campaña con ciertas expectativas de incremento del consumo impulsado por la especial preocupación por la salud que deriva de las circunstancias actuales, aunque sin llegar a los niveles de las primeras semanas de confinamiento.

La realidad es que el consumo ha evolucionado de manera desigual. El arranque de campaña fue casi bueno, pero luego se relajó bastante la demanda, yendo por debajo de lo esperado hasta finales de noviembre y repuntando con salidas desde entonces para terminar en los buenos ritmos actuales. Aun así, es difícil prever lo que sucederá en el mercado a medio plazo.

¿Cuáles son los volúmenes que comercializará Anecoop en cítricos este año? ¿Me lo puede desglosar por categorías?

“Europa del Este demanda cada vez más calibres mayores”

Los grandes mercados de los cítricos españoles siguen siendo el alemán y el francés. Pero por su posición de líder y gran exportador mundial, España debe aspirar a estar representado en todos los mercados importadores del mundo.

Esperamos comercializar en torno a las 340.000 toneladas de cítricos, que corresponden un 50-55% a naranjas, 30% mandarinas, 15% limones y pomelos. ¿Qué mercados fuera de España siguen siendo pujantes?

¿Se ha producido algún cambio o hay algo destacable dentro del mercado europeo?

El mercado europeo continua con los procesos de concentración de la gran distribución y cada vez se ve con mayor claridad cuáles son las empresas que van a ser el referente en cada país.

En los últimos 5 años, ¿cuál es la evolución, en porcentaje, de los cítricos dentro del volumen global de Anecoop?

Anecoop ha tenido en este periodo un gran desarrollo en casi todas las categorías de producto, aunque los cítricos continúan siendo uno de los grandes pilares para la empresa, y lo más importante, una categoría estable.

En la temporada 2014-2015 suponían un 46,6% del total de la categoría de frutas y hortalizas, con una ligera disminución en campañas posteriores (2015-16: 39,7%, 2016-17: 36,3%, 201718: 37,5%) hasta el 38,6% que representaron en 2018-2019.

“Consumption is evolving at different rates” In the current citrus fruit campaign, an important upturn in consumption was expected, but so far this first part of the season has seen more downs than ups Nacho Juárez, head of the category at Anecoop, explains these fluctuations to Fruit Today.

During this season, in which production costs are higher in both the fields and the warehouses, maintaining profitability is one of the main challenges. Are the current prices in line with these costs?

The campaign started off well regarding prices, but the pressure of product and size has meant that they have toned down, and at the moment they are slightly lower than at the beginning of the season. Even so, there might be profitability if the uses and the average production per hectare were to be good.

In general, the campaign is unfolding with parameters where the lack of size is the general trend. How is this affecting Anecoop? Are these smaller fruits being diverted to Eastern Bloc countries?

Indeed, the fruit is smaller in size due to the late rainfall, and although it is also true that this year there is a higher percentage of these sizes being sent to the markets in Eastern Europe, the trend in these countries is progressively moving towards more commercial sizes.

During the months of lockdown, citrus fruit consumption increased considerably, has this boom come to an end?

We started the campaign with expectations of increasing consumption, driven by the special concern about health derived from the current circumstances, although without reaching the levels of the first weeks of the lockdown.

The truth is that consumption has evolved at different rates. The start of the campaign was verging on good, but then the demand dropped off considerably to below the expected rates until the end of November, with upswings since them, ending at the good current rates. Even so, it is difficult to foresee what will happen

on the market in the medium term.

What volumes of citrus fruit will Anecoop market this year?

Could you give me a breakdown by category?

We hope to market around 340,000 tonnes of citrus fruits, which correspond to 50-55% oranges, 30% mandarins, as well as 15% lemons and grapefruits.

Which markets outside Spain continue to boom?

The important markets for Spanish citrus fruits continue to be Germany and France. But due to its leading position as a significant worldwide exporter, Spain must aspire to be represented on all the import markets around the world.

Have there been any changes, or anything worth mentioning within the European market?

The European market continues with the concentration processes of the large retailers and it is increasingly more obvious which companies are going to be the references in each country.

Apart from this, every year citrus fruits compete with more promotable references.

Over the past 5 years, what has the percentage evolution of citrus fruits been within Anecoop’s overall volume?

During this period, Anecoop has seen an important development in virtually all the product categories, although citrus fruits continue to be one of the significant foundations for the company and the most important point, this is a stable category.

In the 2014-2015 season, they made up 46.6% of the total of the fruit and vegetable category, with a slight decrease in subsequent campaigns (2015-16: 39.7%, 2016-17: 36.3%, 2017-18: 37.5%) to the 38.6% they represented in 2018-2019.

tiene que ver con la competencia entre ambos países. “Es cierto que la fresa se lleva la peor parte, pero este estigma se amplifica y se extiende también a los cítricos. Si los consumidores franceses conocieran los controles que hay en España y las inversiones que se realizan en todos los eslabones de la cadena de producción para mejorarla, esta creencia desaparecería.”

En este mismo sentido, y a pesar de la dificultad que entraña para las variedades más tempranas, la compañía ofrece clementinas sin residuos de pesticidas. Para ello, aplica medidas muy avanzadas para evitar la utilización de fitosanitarios, como por ejemplo el uso de mallas en el suelo para evitar la proliferación de malas hierbas.

Abel Alarcón, manager of Agrios Selectos, and French-Spanish by birth, knows about this reality first hand. “There is a distorted view of Spanish productions and we are unfairly accused of not being environmentally-friendly or of using pesticides incorrectly.” To do away with these prejudices, Agrios Selectos and its client, Librefruit, have launched a video that explains where the crops are grown and the production methods used by Spanish citrus fruit growers.

Alarcón maintains that this bad reputation is not based on facts and that it is probably more due to the competition between the two countries. “It is true that strawberries come off worst, but this stigma is being magnified and it is also extending to citrus fruit. If French consumers were to know about the controls there are in Spain and the investments made in all the links of the production chain to improve it, this belief would disappear.”

In the same vein, and in spite of the difficulty caused for the earliest varieties, the company offers clementines that are free from pesticide residue. To do this, it applies very advanced steps to avoid the use of plant protection products, for example the use of netting on the ground to prevent weeds from spreading.

Regarding this campaign, while the euphoria for vitamin C has fallen, Alarcón states that “the market is very fluid for large fruit, but for the much more abundant, smallersized produce, there are certain marketing problems.” This situation means that many companies are diverting their production towards countries in Eastern Europe, where the demands regarding size are not so important.

However, everything indicates that the second part of the campaign will see the opposite case, where the Lane Late and the Navel Powel could have very good size.

The company, covered by the quality figure PGI Cítricos Valencianos, has just renewed the image of its flagship brand, Brio Fruits, and has also made a serious commitment to wooden containers, as opposed to cardboard.

It also owns the Boliche brand, the result of its technological investment, which has allowed a greater product segmentation to be created.

And there is also a third brand called Kaya.

The Valencian company holds the ISO 14001 certificate, which shows its respect and concern about all the protocols in terms of sustainability, recycling and the environment, in addition to IFS, BRC and Global Gap.

La realidad, a día de hoy, es que China tiene un 35% más de producción citrícola que el año pasado. Esta gran oferta condiciona excesivamente los precios de mercado. “Demand is not as fluid as it should be” Andalusian trade operators are experiencing a combination of unfavourable factors Amongst them the following should be mentioned: the high prices of the contracts in the field made during this summer’s euphoria; a higher cost in the warehouses due to the steps implemented against Covid-19; the absence of demand from the Horeca cannel; reduced purchase acts and, finally, some very high volumes of medium and small-sized fruit that cannot be sold at suitable prices.

But, without any doubt, the factor with the greatest influence on the development of this campaign is the small sizedfruit, making sales difficult on the most demanding markets. “We are used to European distribution channels asking for what they want and giving it to them, and this works against us when the produce is not exactly what they want.”

However, from January onwards, the situation will be the opposite, because a not very high production of large-sized oranges is expected. The Nadorcott harvest will be correct in kilos, although we estimate that the fruit will be smaller in size. This will not happen with Orri, which will have correct sizes, but a smaller harvest.

The commitment to club varieties is one of the Andalusian company’s consistent factors, which in addition to Nadorcott and M-7, has also opted for the Leanri variety, the latest incorporation that continues under development. “Whilst the club produce mean

protection for the production, the formula is reasonable, but the produce must also have a good quality because otherwise there will be no commercial success.”

Long distance markets For the past few years, SAT Síntesis’ sales strategy has included a prevalence of long distance destinations, making up 80% of its activity, compared to 20% in Europe.

Amongst the recipient countries are: Canada, Malaysia, Singapore and Argentina.

Moreover, the company from Seville was one of the pioneers in establishing itself on the Chinese market once the export protocol had been signed. Regarding its sales lines with China, the executive explains that “since the beginning of the pandemic, China has opted for local produce, which it has continued to consume until the end of the summer. In spite of this, we have been supplying some containers directly from Australia.”

The reality, at present, is that China has 35% more citrus fruit production than last year. This important offer has a very significant effect on the market prices.

Other regions, such as Malaysia and Singapore, are receiving large quantities of Chinese produce due to this situation.

“As the Navelina is also not a citrus fruit that is appreciated there, our deliveries will start in the second part of the campaign, in February.”

Hay que destacar que, en contra de lo que aún piensan muchos agricultores, el control biológico no tiene un efecto inmediato, ni en cítricos ni en ningún otro cultivo. Por tanto, si se está implantando en los cítricos españoles es porque se está produciendo un cambio de mentalidad en el productor.

buenos resultados tanto en mandarinas y clementinas, como en pomelo y naranjo, ya que los protocolos de control biológico de Koppert se adaptan a cualquier modelo de producción: ecológico, convencional, residuo cero y biodinámico. Pero los buenos resultados del control biológico no serían posibles sin conocer suficientemente el ciclo vital de las plagas y sin manejar correctamente

El éxito del control biológico en cítricos depende de la anticipación y la planificación, dos conceptos en los que se basan los fundamentos de todo el trabajo que hay que poner en marcha para mantener a raya las plagas de forma natural y sin dejar residuos, es decir, con estrategias basadas en sueltas selectivas de enemigos naturales.

Esto significa que con el control biológico hay que empezar a actuar mucho antes de empezar a ver presencia de la plaga.

Como ejemplo, en los meses de enero y febrero hay que comenzar las sueltas de Cryptobug-L (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri) para tener un control efectivo durante la primavera de diferentes tipos de cotonet.

Otro ejemplo es que en los primeros días de marzo habrá que realizar las sueltas de Spical UltiMite para el control de araña roja. “Nos encontramos que algunos productores nos preguntan por qué soltar Spical a primeros de marzo si la araña roja no aparecerá hasta junio. Koppert ofrece un asesoramiento continuado al productor, sobre todo al principio. “Conocemos perfectamente el comportamiento de cada enemigo natural y sabemos aconsejar al agricultor el mejor momento para hacer la suelta, porque también conocemos la ubicación de la finca y el estado concreto de ese cultivo”, asegura Rodríguez, quien destaca que es muy importante contar con un asesoramiento profesional.

The citrus fruit production surface area that trusts in biological control continues to grow in Spain, because there are increasingly fewer authorised chemical instruments and consumers prefer residue-free citrus fruits. Koppert is growing in all the production areas of Spain, particularly lemons. They are also having very good results both in mandarins and clementines, and in grapefruits and oranges, as Koppert’s biological control protocols adapt to any production model: ecological, conventional, zero residue and biodynamic. But good results from biological control are not always possible without knowing enough about the pests’ life cycle and without correctly handling the suitable times to carry out the natural enemy releases.

It must be emphasised that, opposed to what many farmers think, biological control does not have an immediate effect, on citrus fruits or on any other crop. Therefore, if this system is being implanted for Spanish citrus fruits, it is because a change in the producers’ mentality is occurring.

Anticipación and planning The success of biological control for citrus fruits depends on anticipation and planning, two concepts that are the foundations for all the work that has to be started up to keep pests at bay naturally and without leaving any residue, that is

to say, with strategies based on selective natural enemy releases. This means that biological control must be started long before first seeing the pests.

For example, Cryptobug-L (Cryptolaemusmontrouzieri) releases must be started in the months of January and February for an effective control during the spring of different types of mealy bug.

Another example is that in the first days of March, Spical Ulti Mite releases must be carried out to control red spider mites.

“Some producers ask us why we release Spical at the beginning of March, when red spider mites don’t appear until June. The answer is very simple: Spical must start being released in April or March, because if they are released in June, when the pests are already infesting the crops, the biological control doesn’t have any effect and it will be a waste of money,” according to Juan Miguel Rodríguez, Citrus Manager at Koppert.

Koppert offers continuous advice for producers, particularly at the beginning of the process. “We know everything about the behaviour of each natural enemy and we know how to advise farmers about the best time to release them, because we also know the farm’s location and the specific conditions of this crop,” Rodríguez affirms, emphasising that it is very important to rely on professional advice.

Durante los últimos años, los grandes exportadores se han convertido además en grandes propietarios. ¿Es el caso de su empresa?

En el caso de nuestro Grupo, mi familia empezó la compra de fincas como estrategia de aprovisionamiento en la década de los 70, y desde entonces siempre hemos mantenido el equilibro a medida que hemos ido creciendo. ¿Sigue afirmando que las Clemenules y las Navelinas son variedades en crisis? ¿Cuál sería la alternativa?

“Tenemos una readecuación de las referencias de venta hacia los calibres más limitados”

¿Dónde ha quedado la euforia por el consumo de vitamina C del confinamiento?

Es cierto que estamos en una campaña un tanto inusual, con un arranque lento, sin mucho consumo, y una situación de confinamiento duro en toda Europa, con las mismas dificultades que en la primera ocasión y, además, hay que tener en cuenta que el clima no ha acompañado demasiado, porque realmente hasta diciembre no ha entrado el frío. ¿Desde su punto de vista cómo se ha comportado el mercado esta primera fase de campaña? ¿y durante el verano con las importaciones del hemisferio Sur? 26 Fruittoday

La campaña de verano no es lo suficientemente significativa como para dar una lectura concluyente, ya que este año el producto del hemisferio sur llegó con un mercado completamente vacío, con una producción normal, sin ninguna superproducción y con problemas logísticos en origen que motivaron la llegada de producto con cuentagotas.

Por todo ello el arranque de la campaña de cítricos europeos fue fluida, con buenos calibres y buena demanda. ¿Falta fruta de un calibre mayor? ¿Cómo es la demanda y los precios para ésta?

La realidad de este año es, como todos sabemos, una campaña caracterizada por muchas unidades, pero con un calibre limitado en lo que respecta a las variedades de otoño. Debido a esto, estamos teniendo una readecuación de las referencias de venta hacia los calibres más abundantes, pero nada que con buena voluntad e interés de los actores de la cadena de distribución no se pueda acometer.

Yo lo que opino es que, en una campaña de comercialización en fresco de aproximadamente 5 millones de toneladas, entre las exportaciones y el mercado interior, no podemos tener con dos variedades que se comercializan en apenas tres meses alrededor de 3 millones de toneladas de producción. Y ese es el caso de la Clemenules y la Navelina. La alternativa es adecuar la oferta a la demanda y de esta forma evitar desequilibrios.

El mercado francés es de vital importancia para Cañamás. ¿qué características propias tiene este año de pandemia?

El mercado francés, al igual que el resto de los mercados europeos, está sujeto a las turbulencias que está provocando la pandemia que sufrimos. Inestabilidad, desconcierto y crisis son hoy el pan nuestro de cada día, y lo que hay que hacer es ser un actor prudente de la cadena de distribución y defender nuestros intereses, pero sin perder de vista el contexto en el que nos encontramos. ¿Cómo se rentabiliza la campaña en una situación tan anómala dónde los costes en campo y almacén están disparados?

Como le decía anteriormente, hay que reclamar lo que necesitamos para hacer un buen trabajo, que sea justo con nuestros proveedores y que nos permita asegurar las condiciones de trabajo de la plantilla, y además hay que hacerlo dando el máximo servicio con la máxima calidad.

Where has the euphoria for vitamin C during the lockdown gone now?

It is true that we are in a campaign that is slightly unusual, with a slow start, without much consumption, and a tough lockdown situation throughout Europe, with the same difficulties as during the first one and, additionally, the weather conditions have not been good, because the cold weather didn’t really arrive until December.

In your opinion, how has the market behaved in this first phase of the campaign? How did it behave in the summer with the imports from the southern hemisphere?

The summer campaign is not significant enough to be able to provide a conclusive reading, as this year the produce from the southern hemisphere arrived to a completely empty market, with normal production, without any super production and with logistical problems at source that caused the produce to arrive in dribs and drabs. For all these reasons, the start of the European citrus fruit campaign was fluid, with good sizes and a good demand.

Is there a lack of larger fruit and what are the demand and prices for this fruit?

This year’s reality, as we all know, involves a campaign characterised by many units, but with limited sizes regarding the autumn varieties. As a result of this, we are having to make readjustments in the sales references to the more abundant sizes, but with the good intentions and interest of the agents from the distribution chain, this won’t become a problem.

In recent years, large exporters have also become important owners. Is this your company’s case?

In our Group’s case, my family started purchasing farms as a supply strategy in the 1970s, and since then we have always kept the balance while we were growing.

Do you still affirm that Clemenules and Navelinas are varieties in crisis? What would the alternative be?

My opinion is that in a fresh fruit marketing campaign of approximately 5 million tonnes, including exports and the home market, we cannot have two varieties that market around 3 million tonnes of production in just three months. And this is the case of Clemenules and Navelina. The alternative involves adjusting the offer to the demand and therefore, avoiding imbalances.

The French market is vitally important for Cañamás; what are its special characteristics in this year of pandemic?

The French market, as with the other European markets, is subject to the turmoil caused by the pandemic we are suffering. Instability, consternation and crisis are the order of the day and the agents from the distribution chain must be cautious and defend our interests, but without losing sight of the current context.

How is the campaign being made profitable in such an unusual situation, where the costs in the fields and warehouses are sky high?

As I have already mentioned, we must ask for what we need to do a good job: being fair with our suppliers and allowing us to guarantee the working conditions for our workers, and this must also be carried out giving top service with top quality.

ace ya 26 años la firma almeriense inició su andadura en el segmento de los cítricos ecológicos, convirtiéndose en una de las primeras de España en subirse a un carro hasta entonces desconocido. La transición fue muy natural. “En nuestra zona siempre se han trabajado variedades antiguas de forma tradicional y familiar. Hay poca regeneración varietal, encontramos árboles con 70 años, así que el paso al bío fue sencillo porque apenas se trataban con fitosanitarios”, explica Juan Torres, gerente de SAT Cítricos del Andarax.

totales, así que el perjuicio es grande”.

Cítricos del Andarax tiene 800 ha de superficie, la mitad en Almería; el resto en Alicante, Sevilla, Cádiz, Granada, Huelva y, en menor medida en Córdoba. Su producción es principalmente de naranjas (90%), y el resto, mandarinas y limón.

Junto a la gama en fresco, tienen una línea de zumos, con la que comercializan 3 millones de litros al año en el mercado nacional, Francia y Holanda. “Tenemos de naranja con aloe vera, smoothies… elaborados con una variedad similar a la Salustiana y otras de segundas categorías, para aprovechar al máximo la producción. Además, usamos los subproductos (cáscara) para alimento de ganado”. Estas acciones que reflejan la filosofía de sostenibilidad que ha regido siempre a la empresa.

Lemons have been affected most out of all the traditional citrus fruits.” Added to all of this is the increase in expenses due to the pandemic, as well as the increase in the minimum inter-professional salary for workers in the fields and in the warehouses. “The cost of the harvest alone makes up 30% of the total expenses, therefore the damage is significant.”

Over the years, this adventure has become the starring role of its offer, as they now only have 5% of conventional production. The main part is ecological. For this reason, it is not surprising that a large part of its total volume, 20 million kilos, is marketed in destinations such as Germany or France, the largest bio consumers. However, Torres underscores the considerable increase in demand in Eastern European countries such as Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, over the last 3 or 4 years, caused by the rise in income in these countries.

Próximamente superarán las 540 materias activas en barrido de plaguicidas

a Región de Murcia tiene una importante producción citrícola (869.374t en 2019/20) que ha ido en aumento en las últimas campañas. Para dar servicio a la creciente demanda y estar al lado de los clientes, Reactiva Laboratorio ha reforzado su presencia en la zona con un nuevo delegado comercial en la Región y resto del Levante, Antonio Molina, que se incorporó en enero.

“Para nosotros, acompañar al cliente es fundamental. Queremos ser un departamento más dentro de su organización, y le aportamos soluciones dentro de la amplia gama que ofrece la red de laboratorios de Grupo Carso”, explica Molina.

Muchas de las empresas citrícolas que se acercan a Reactiva llegan interesadas en los servicios para la línea ecológica. “A nivel general es un sector muy serio, saben cómo actuar y llevan a cabo un control exhaustivo… están muy concienciados, piden gran cantidad de muestras a lo largo de la campaña, incluso los productores de convencional tratan de aplicar el mínimo de productos. El afán del sector es ir a residuo cero”.

Además, son laboratorio colaborador de Zerya en residuo cero, tanto en cítricos como en hortalizas, y cuentan con la acreditación de la Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren (BNN), asociación alemana que representa los intereses del comercio especializado de alimentos orgánicos.

En constante crecimiento para mejorar sus servicios, en Reactiva están ampliando el barrido de plaguicidas en multirresiduos con 120 materias activas adicionales. El objetivo es superar las 540 en los próximos meses y obtener la acreditación ENAC de sus análisis microbiológicos según la norma UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025.

The Region of Murcia has an important citrus fruit production (869.374t in 2019/20) that has been increasing in recent campaigns. “In general, it is a very serious sector; they know how to act and they carry out an exhaustive control… they are very conscientious, they ask for a large amount of samples over the campaign; even the conventional fruit producers try to apply a minimum of products. The sector is being driven towards becoming zero residue.”

At Reactiva, they offer a complete range of services; pesticide sweeps on produce (multi-residue analysis, dithiocarbamates, glyphosate, chlorate, perchlorate…); analysis of soil and water for new farms; or PCR analysis of plant pathogens (in soil, fruit…) that are very popular in the region of Lleida in the stone fruit sector and that are now being introduced into Murcia. “Find 24 plant pathogens and issue results in just 24 hours.”

Additionally, they are a laboratory that works alongside Zerya in zero residue, both in citrus fruits and in vegetables and they hold accreditation from the Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren (BNN), a German association that represents the interests of trade specialising in organic food.

Constantly growing to improve its services, at Reactiva they are extending the pesticide sweeps in multi-residues with 120 additional active ingredients. The aim is to exceed 540 over the next few months and obtain ENAC accreditation for its microbiological analyses according to the standard UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025.

La empresa sigue ampliando su portfolio con nuevos e interesantes proyectos a través de su filial Nagami Tropi Alcanzará las 15.000 t de cítricos ecológicos en dos años sumará esta mandarina a su portfolio.

Nuevas instalaciones Recientemente han culminado unas nuevas instalaciones para manipulado de cítricos ecológicos. La nave ocupa 1.500 m² construidos sobre un solar de 4.700 m², con la idea de seguir ampliando las dependencias en función de las necesidades.

ste 2020 ha marcado récords en el sector citrícola. En marzo y abril la demanda por parte de los consumidores se disparó. Una tendencia que continuó hasta junio motivada, en buena parte, por la búsqueda de las propiedades beneficiosas de estas frutas.

José Antonio Alconchel, gerente de Alcoaxarquía, asegura que “en mis 45 años en el sector no había vivido nada igual. Se alcanzaron precios nunca vistos con máximas de 1€/kg en origen”.

Aunque vaticina que no se volverán a ver estas cotizaciones y “los precios del ecológico se verán afectados por la crisis”, lo cierto es que, en líneas generales, los cítricos atraviesan un buen momento y esta coyuntura reafirma la ambiciosa estrategia de crecimiento de la empresa malagueña, a través de su filial Nagami Tropi, fundada hace 5 años y con producción 100% bío.

En su hoja de ruta prevén la suma de cultivos, actualmente en reconversión, la ampliación del portfolio con nuevos productos y la puesta en marcha de una nueva nave y línea de manipulado para ampliación de cítricos. Todo ello con el objetivo de alcanzar 470 hectáreas de cultivos y 15.000 toneladas entre todas sus referencias de cítricos para 2023.

Para este 2020/21, esperan comercializar 7.000 t de naranja, 1.000 t de mandarina y, como novedad, 250 t de limón en 62 ha, una cifra que se multiplicará notablemente en los dos próximos años. “En 2022 tendremos 10.000 t de naranja y 170 ha de limón”, avanza Alconchel.

Otra novedad importante será el crecimiento de mandarina de la variedad Tango. Aunque este concepto no está tan extendido en el bío como en convencional, la empresa ha decidido dar un paso al frente y en 2023

Actualmente el 70% de su producción citrícola ecológica se exporta a destinos tradicionales como Francia, Bélgica, Alemania, Inglaterra, Suiza… A destacar, el aumento de la demanda en Polonia, Eslovaquia y Eslovenia.

José Antonio Alconchel, Manager of Alcoaxarquía, assures that “in my 45 years in the sector I have never seen anything like it. Prices never seen before were reached, with maximums of 1€/kg at source”.

Although he predicts that these prices will not be seen again and “the prices of ecological produce will be affected by the crisis,” the truth is that, in general, citrus fruits are experiencing a good moment and this situation reaffirms the ambitious growth strategy by the company from Malaga through its subsidiary Nagami Tropi, founded 5 years ago, with 100% bio production.

The company’s roadmap includes plans to add crops, currently being converted, the extension of the portfolio with new products and the start up of some new premises and a processing line to extend the citrus fruit area. All of this aimed at reaching 470 hectares of crops and 15,000 tonnes including all its citrus fruit references for 2023.

For 2020/21, they expect to market 7,000 t of oranges, 1,000 t of mandarins and as a new development, 250 t of lemons on 62 ha, a figure that will multiply considerably over the next two years. “In 2022 we will have 10,000 t of oranges and 170 ha of lemons”, Alconchel advances.

Another important new development will be the growth of the Tango variety of mandarins. Although this concept is not as extended in the bio crop as in conventional, the company has decided to step forward and in 2023 it will add this mandarin to its portfolio.

New installations Recently they have completed some new installations for processing ecological citrus fruits. The warehouse covers a built surface area of 1,500 m² on a plot of land measuring 4,700 m², with the idea of continuing to extend the premises depending on the requirements.

“Vuelve el interés por el kiwi verde” Dal Pane Vivai diversifica su ‘semáforo’ con la variedad Meris y amplía sus zonas de cultivo en España, Australia y Sudáfrica

a empresa italiana que lidera Giampaolo Dal Pane sigue ampliando sus cultivos y zonas de producción a nivel mundial.

La última introducción en su gama es el kiwi verde Meris, un material que destaca del resto a primera vista por su atractiva forma alargada.

A nivel interno, tiene una menor acidez que el Hayward y una mayor cantidad de materia seca. Y agronómicamente hablando, tiene la ventaja de que se poliniza más fácilmente que otras variedades.

Esta fruta es además muy atractiva para los consumidores, que incrementaron notablemente la demanda durante los meses de marzo y abril, e incluso el verano, ávidos de las propiedades saludables como su alto contenido en vitamina C, en un contexto en el que la pandemia ha fortalecido el driver ‘salud’.

El kiwi alcanza medias de 1€/ kg el verde, 1,50€ el amarillo y 3€ el rojo

Aunque el segmento del kiwi verde ya tenía un gran mercado, Dal Pane asegura que “esta volviendo el interés” de los productores tras unos años en los que el foco estaba puesto sobre el amarillo y el innovador kiwi rojo. La realidad es que, en general, el kiwi se ha convertido en un producto muy atractivo para los productores debido a su precio: “de media alcanza un euro/kg en el caso del verde; entre 1,5-1,6€ el amarillo y 3€ el rojo 3”, explica el director general de Dal Pane Vivai- Summerfruit.

“En esos meses los precios se mantuvieron en incluso crecieron en ciertos momentos, debido a la falta de producto”, puntualiza Dal Pane. Esa tendencia al alza en el consumo se ha relajado en los últimos meses, pero sigue siendo importante.

Una fotografía cambiante La bacteriosis o PSA y la moria han afectado fuertemente a la producción de kiwi italiano y han “cambiado la geografía” de los cultivos, desplazándolos desde el norte a zonas del sur como Campania y Calabria,

donde se están arrancando plantaciones de naranjas y clementinas para sustituirlas por kiwi. En la provincia de Cuneo, en solo 4 años ha desaparecido una superficie de 500 hectáreas (-15%).

Este año, zonas como Latina han tenido problemas de moria que han arrasado con plantaciones enteras, y Emilia Romagna ha visto descender su producción por las dos heladas que se produjeron a final de marzo. Por este motivo, Dal Pane augura una caída de la producción total de kiwi italiano en los próximos dos años. En éste, estima que se pase del potencial de 500.000 t a menos de 300.000.

En el caso del Consorzio Dori, la andadura es distinta. Son una empresa joven, con un proyecto de crecimiento a nivel global y una continua entrada en producción de nuevas fincas. Ya el año pasado empezaron a cultivar en un nuevo origen, Australia, donde tienen perpectivas de alcanzar las 100 ha en 2 años, y en este 2020 han desembarcado en Sudáfrica con 20 ha y sumarán 200 en los próximos 3 ejercicios.

En ambas han optado principalmente por kiwi amarillo, pero también Meris (verde).

“Entre los dos hemisferios sumamos 500 ha. Solo en Italia, alcanzamos un volumen de 3.600 t, frente a las 2.000 t del año pasado”. A mitad de diciembre, la venta avanzaba a buen ritmo, alcanzando el 75%, y preveían terminarla en enero.

Su proyecto de ampliación prevé la suma de entre 140 y 150 hectáreas de cultivos entre Italia, Francia, España y Portugal para este año y otras 500 ha en el próximo trienio. Un programa que se está viendo en cierto modo ralentizado por la “indecisión” de algunos productores por los problemas que está habiendo de enfermedades en

el kiwi. Para tratar de contrarrestarlas, el grupo apuesta por cultivos protegidos, que además minimizan los problemas climáticos. Actualmente tienen este sistema en fincas del norte de Italia (Verona y Latina), Francia y Chile, donde disponen de 100 ha cubiertas.

“Asturias es muy interesante” España es uno de los países en los que trabaja la empresa italiana desde hace tiempo. Ya cuentan con Dorì en Valencia, donde tienen un acuerdo comercial con Anecoop, y han empezado a plantar en Lleida y Huesca. Además, están abiertos al establecimiento de acuerdos con nuevas empresas. “Hay un gran interés por la producción. Hoy producir kiwi es interesante”, asegura el director general del grupo

This rising trend in consumption has dropped in recent months, but continues to be important.

Aunque en principio este año el sector italiano esperaba incrementar la producción de kiwi respecto al ejercicio pasado, finalmente se verá ligeramente mermada.

e trata de una innovación reciente, pero que ha captado rápidamente el interés de los consumidores por su atractivo y sabor diferencial.

El kiwi rojo suma nuevos adeptos y está experimentando una “fuerte demanda” que las empresas no quieren dejar pasar por alto. Es el caso de Origine Group, que ha sumado esta nueva referencia a su gama a través de una licencia de Fruitgrowing Equipment and Service para la producción y comercialización en exclusiva para Italia.

“Es muy interesante porque es una de las mejores variedades en color y sabor que existen”, asegura Alessandro Zampagna, gerente de Origine Group.

El kiwi rojo es muy delicado a nivel productivo (tiene más sensibilidad a la bacteriosis) y requiere un desarrollo gradual. El año pasado ya empezaron a hacer las primeras pruebas comerciales, y en esta campaña lo han lanzado oficialmente en Italia y otros destinos europeos.

De forma paralela, el consumo de kiwi amarillo crece por encima del verde a nivel mundial. “Es más nuevo y la producción se está incrementando, pero no va a restarle importancia al verde”.

Tras culminar la temporada de kiwi de sus socios chilenos en septiembre, Origine Group comenzó la campaña de kiwi italiano 36 Fruittoday

en octubre con las primeras variedades, y en noviembre y diciembre ha continuado con Hayward con muy buena calidad de fruta.

El año pasado la empresa envió sus primeros envíos a México. En este ejercicio, la situación, con una inflación muy alta debido a las fluctuaciones del dólar, el peso y los efectos de la pandemia, les ha llevado a contener la expansión y solo servirán a un grupo concreto de clientes de forma planificada. Otro destino en el que se ha introducido es Sudáfrica, en el que esperan consolidarse tras la fuerte introducción inicial del año pasado.

After finishing the company’s Chilean partners kiwi season in September, Origine Group began the Italian kiwi campaign in October with the first varieties and in November and December it continued with Hayward, with very high fruit quality.

The first two months are showing a very positive evolution in prices, between 15-20% higher than the same dates last year and with slightly higher volumes, Zampagna comments.

Although, in principle, this year the Italian sector expected to increase kiwi production compared to the previous year, finally it will drop slightly. At Origine Group they expect to reach similar volumes, around 4,000 t.

Last year the company sent its first shipments to Mexico. This year, the situation with very high inflation due to fluctuations in the dollar, the peso and the effects of the pandemic, have lead them to contain the expansion and they will only serve a specific group of programmed clients. South Africa is another destination they have added, where they expect to become consolidated after the important initial introduction last year.

Al cierre de esta edición, dos aspectos de vital importancia para el sector de los berries onubenses siguen imprecisos

a campaña de fresa arranca en pocas semanas y, a mediados de diciembre, la suficiente disponibilidad de mano de obra sigue estando en el aire. Las primeras temporeras marroquíes llegarán en cuentagotas. Se prevé que en enero lleguen unas 4.000.

Brasil podría ser un nuevo destino para los arándanos onubenses

Las gestiones y tramitación administrativas para el contingente de contratación en origen procedente de Marruecos se iniciaron en tiempo y forma, pero a mediados de diciembre, las circunstancias de incertidumbre generadas por la pandemia mantienen al sector en vilo. “Las primeras temporeras deberían llegar en enero y esperemos que así sea. Todas ellas estarán avaladas por un test PCR, tal y como se obliga al resto de ciudadanos que entran en territorio español,” explica Rafael Domínguez, gerente de Freshuelva.

“Además de las trabajadoras marroquíes esperamos contar con mano de obra del entorno comunitario y es probable, que recibamos exempleados del sector turístico o de la restauración,” remarca Domínguez.

En cualquier caso, como comenta un exportador “la disponibilidad de mano

de obra es un asunto que no deja dormir a muchos de nosotros y se perpetua campaña tras campaña porque nunca existen suficientes trabajadoras”.

Por otro lado, las decisiones finales en las negociaciones con el Reino Unido pueden ser claves en el desarrollo de la campaña 2020-21.

Gran Bretaña constituye el tercer mercado en volumen para las berries onubenses que, sin un acuerdo explícito entre las partes, deberían pagar aranceles del 11% en fresas y del 9% en frambuesas, arándanos y moras.

Si este hecho se produjera, causaría un grave perjuicio al sector en su totalidad que vería reducidas su competitividad, al tiempo que podría haber un excedente de producto en el mercado continental.

Se baraja un arancel del 11% para la fresa en el caso de un ‘Brexit duro’

Durante el periodo transitorio, que finaliza el 31 de diciembre, el Reino Unido ha firmado acuerdos preferenciales con terceros países (del Mediterráneo y

Sudamérica) que pondrían en suelo británico producto con arancel cero, hecho que da una clara desventaja al producto procedente de España.

Fresa estabilizada y arándano al alza Tal y como viene aconteciendo en los últimos años, el cultivo de la fresa se encuentra estabilizado entorno a unas 6.000 hectáreas (en concreto este año se baraja un descenso de un 2%, que significa unas 6.105 hectáreas de cultivo), mientras que el de arándano subirá un 7,2 % y llega a las 3.310. La frambuesa es la más afectada por el descenso con una caída del 10% y una reducción de 300 hectáreas de producción. La producción de mora se mantiene estable en torno a las 145 hectáreas.

La fresa, el cultivo más importante con diferencia, tiende a aumentar sus plantaciones más tempranas.

La incidencia de la pandemia en 2020 se ha visto reflejada en un descenso en las exportaciones de frutos rojos en casi un 6% respecto a la campaña anterior, sin embargo la facturación ha sido muy similar, con una bajada de apenas el 0,6%, debido a que el incremento en la facturación del arándano en un 14,3% ha contrastado con el descenso del 3,7% de la fresa, del 6,63% de la frambuesa y del 40,7% de la mora.

Incorporación de nuevos mercados Freshuelva, junto con Fepex y el Ministerio, avanza en su consolidación de nuevos mercados fuera de Europa. Brasil podría ser el próximo destino en expansión para los arándanos onubenses después de la visita que realizaron delegados cariocas a la provincia para ver in situ las explotaciones.

Desde el punto de vista de las infraestructuras, el puerto de Huelva, el más grande en superficie de España, está realizando gran esfuerzo inversor para mejorar sus infraestructuras y las conexiones viarias y ferroviarias con su hinterland, gracias a una inversión superior a los 120 millones de euros.

All of them will be guaranteed by a PCR test, in the same way as all other citizens entering Spanish territory,” explains Rafael Domínguez, manager of Freshuelva.

“In addition to the Moroccan workers, we hope to have labour from the EU area and it is likely that we will receive former employees from the tourism or catering sector,” Domínguez comments.

In any event, as an exporter comments, “the availability of labour is a subject that is making many of us lose sleep and it continues, campaign after campaign, because there are never enough workers.”

Furthermore, the final decisions in the negotiations with the United Kingdom could be crucial in the development of the 2020-21 campaign. Great Britain forms the third market in volume for the berries from Huelva which, without an explicit agreement between the parties, could have to pay 11% tariffs on strawberries and 9% on raspberries, bilberries and blackberries.

If this were to occur, it would cause serious damage to the sector as a whole, which would see its competitive edge reduced, and at the same time there could be a surplus of produce on the continental market.

During the transition period, which ends on the 31st of December, the United Kingdom has signed preferential agreements with third countries (from the Mediterranean and South America) which would bring produce to British soil with zero tariffs, a fact that puts the produce from Spain at a clear disadvantage.

Strawberries stabilised and bilberries on the rise As has been happening in recent years, the strawberry crop has stabilised at around 6,000 hectares (specifically, this year a drop of 2% is being considered, which means around 6,105 hectares of crops),while bilberries will rise by 7.2% and reach 3,310. Raspberries have been affected most by the decrease with a 10% drop and a reduction of 300 hectares of production. Blackberry production remains stable at around 145 hectares.

Strawberries, the most important crop by far, is tending to increase its earliest plantations.

Regarding the diverging behaviour between bilberry and raspberry productions, sources from the sector explain that “the important competition from Morocco with raspberries is causing the production to become relocated and many Andalusian companies prefer to produce in the African country where there labour is plentiful and cheap.

Bilberries from Huelva, however, continue being competitive.”

The incidence of the pandemic in 2020 has been shown by an almost 6% drop in the export of red fruits compared to the previous campaign. However, the invoicing has been very similar, with a decrease of only 0.6%, due to the fact that the increase in invoicing for bilberries has risen by 14.3%, contrasting with the 3.7% drop in strawberries, the 6.63% in raspberries and the 40.7% in blackberries.

Incorporation of new markets Freshuelva, along with Fepex and the Ministry, are moving forward in their consolidation of new markets outside Europe. Brazil could be the next expansion destination for Huelva’s bilberries after the visit made by Brazilian delegates to the province to see the farms in person.

From the infrastructures point of view, the port of Huelva, the largest in surface area in Spain, is making a great investment effort to improve its infrastructures and the roads and railways connecting it with its hinterland, thanks to an investment of over 120 million euros.

ientras se suceden los trámites entre las distintas administraciones para que en la actual campaña haya las personas necesarias para trabajar en el campo, “hay agricultores tan preocupados que no pueden dormir. Es el único sector en el que uno de sus inputs más básico no está garantizado. Dependemos de muchos factores que no controlamos, y este año más”, explica Juan Báñez, director de Cuna de Platero.

“La única esperanza pasa porque posibles personas españolas o nacionalizadas quieran trabajar en el campo. La fresa requiere una cosecha continua y ya hemos visto otros años, como se quedaba fruta en el campo. Es una situación muy compleja y nuestro objetivo es seguir trabajando para poder mantener la economía local”.

Además, un nuevo producto, la pitahaya, se ha incorpora a su cartera.

Cupla, lo nuevo en arándanos Aunque la entidad es licenciataria de las variedades líderes del sector, también desarrolla un programa propio de investigación y desarrollo que ha dado como resultado la variedad de arándanos Cupla (acrónimo de Cuna de Platero) que estrena su primer año comercial con unas previsiones que pueden alcanzar los 500.000 kilos.

Es para este producto donde están previstas las próximas inversiones en tecnología para mejorar los procesos de envasado.

Como objetivo a más largo plazo, se tiene prevista la ampliación de la zona de la nave donde se envasa y etiqueta este fruto.

A nivel comercial la exportación sigue

El impacto económico de la COVID se hará patente en la cuenta de resultados de las empresas debido a las medidas de seguridad implementadas, tanto en el campo como en el almacén. “Este tipo de costes no se pueden rentabilizar, lo único que nos queda es aceptar la situación y pensar que, por otro lado, los gastos son también menores porque no vamos a ferias y hemos reducido eventos profesionales”.

Cuna de Platero fue la primera empresa de su sector en adherirse al Pacto Mundial de Naciones Unidas para cumplir los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible. Y dentro de este proyecto, destaca el uso de energía fotovoltaica, instalada el año pasado, así como un compromiso firme en la búsqueda de soluciones más sostenibles de envasado, “aunque de momento y a pesar de las pruebas piloto realizadas, todavía no hemos encontrado el material adecuado ya que una cuestión son nuestros deseos y otros la realidad técnica en el almacén”, remarca el directivo.

Cupla, the latest in bilberries Although the cooperative is a licensee for the leading varieties in the sector, it is also developing its own research and development programme, which has resulted in the bilberry variety Cupla (an acronym of Cuna de Platero) that is starting its first year on the market with forecasts that could reach 500,000 kilos.

The next investments in technology are foreseen

for this product to improve the packaging processes. As a longer term project, the warehouse area where this fruit is packaged and labelled is planned to be extended.

Commercially, export continues to take up 80% of the cooperative’s share, with the home market absorbing the remainder, with a slightly upward trend. This home market trend relies on the service factor that Cuna de Platero provides with its strawberry production in Avila, which is available from June to December and allows the annual cycle to be closed.

The economic impact of COVID will be obvious on the companies’ profit and loss accounts, owing to the safety steps implemented, both in the fields and in the warehouses. “This type of expense cannot be capitalised; we just have to accept the situation and think that, on the other hand, our expenses are also lower because we aren’t attending trade fairs and we have reduced professional events.”

Cuna de Platero was the first company in its sector to join the United Nations Global Compact to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. And within this project, the use of solar energy panels, installed last year, as well as a strong commitment in the search for more sustainable packaging solutions both stand out, “although at present and in spite of the pilot trials carried out, we have yet to find the right material, as one thing is what we want and the technical reality in the warehouse is another thing altogether,” the executive comments.

Los cultivos verticales llegan a Onubafruit

La cooperativa onubense proyecta nuevos sistemas de cultivo, tanto en vertical como hidropónico tivo se recogerán en unos sensores del internet de las cosas (IoT) de alta precisión y a través de una plataforma de Telefónica se podrán analizar todos sus algoritmos.

En esta fase experimental se cultivarán variedades de día neutro, de buen manejo y con un control de las horas de luz que se aplican a la planta. Se trata de cultivos en espacios controlados, reduciendo el impacto medioambiental y el uso del agua, lo que significaría que en 90 m² se puede producir el mismo volumen que en 10.000 m² de tierra.

En la actualidad se cuenta con programas propios en fresa, arándanos con seis nuevas variedades y otros desarrollos para mora. “Además de ello, se colabora en programas con varios obtentores de frambuesa y fresa y tendremos nuevas opciones comerciales en las campañas 2021/22 – 2022/23,” remarca Esteve.

En esta misma línea por la innovación se incluyen varios proyectos de cultivo sostenible: Resi You de Bayer, que permite al agricultor planificar su régimen de protección de cultivos y pronosticar los niveles de residuos fitosanitarios y el Proyecto Medioambiental Live UE. Respecto a las perspectivas de la temporada que ahora se inicia, el ejecutivo apunta que “las expectativas son siempre de mejora ya que contamos con unas variedades bien adaptadas y si el tiempo nos acompaña esperamos tener una buena campaña. En cítricos, aunque el comienzo ha sido irregular parece que se estabiliza el consumo y prevemos también un buen final”.

En otro orden de cosas, la cooperativa cuenta ya con una superficie de 40 hectáreas certificadas en ecológico que aumentan cada año. “El consumo biológico va de la mano con la preocupación por el medio ambiente y en Onubafruit somos conscientes de que las prioridades de los consumidores han cambiado”.

Vertical crops reach Onubafruit The cooperative from Huelva is projecting new growing systems, both vertical and using hydroponics Along with Telefónica and Vertical Green, Onubafruit is projecting a vertical crop of highly technological strawberries that will allow the production parameters to be controlled remotely.

Carlos Esteve, the Sales Manager from the cooperative, emphasises that “on such a globalised market and with ever-increasing competition, we think that both differentiation and research are the basic foundations for development; and with this new commitment we want to discover the possibilities offered by vertical production to improve the crop in all its parameters.”

The strawberries will be cultivated without any substrate, on vertical walls located in closed containers. The variables of the production process will be collected using high-precision sensors from the Internet of Things (IoT) and all the algorithms may be analysed using a Telefónica platform.

Variety improvement The variety improvement programmes have always played a crucial role for the company.

Currently, they have their own programmes in strawberries, bilberries with six new varieties and other developments for blackberries.

“In addition to this, they are collaborating on programmes with several raspberry and strawberry breeders and we will have new commercial options in the 2021/22 – 2022/23 campaigns,” Esteve comments.

Several sustainable crop projects are included on these innovation lines: Resi You from Bayer, which allows farmers to plan their crop protection regime and forecast the plant protection residue levels and the EU Environmental Life Project.

Regarding the prospects of the season that is starting now, the executive comments that “the expectations always rise as we have some well-adapted varieties and if the weather co-operates we hope to have a good campaign. In citrus fruits, although the start has been irregular, it seems that consumption is stabilising and we also predict a good end.”

On another note, the cooperative has a surface area of 40 ecologically certified hectares, which increases every year. “Consumption of biological produce goes hand in hand with concern about the environment and at Onubafruit we are aware that consumers’ priorities have changed”.

The cooperative’s production forecasts in this campaign include the following figures for their different products: 33,000 tonnes of strawberries; 12,000 of raspberries and 200 of bilberries. In other categories they have 16,000 t of citrus fruit; 7,000 of persimmons; 1,000 of stone fruit and 200 of avocados.

En el aspecto comunicacional, y después de las exitosas campañas de marketing llevadas a cabo durante los últimos años, la cooperativa seguirá trabajando en su estrategia de marca que se refuerza y afianza año tras año como el ‘top of mind’ de la categoría entre los consumidores españoles.

Gómez cree que “los efectos económicos de la pandemia a medio y largo plazo van a ser inevitables, aunque no es fácil estimar la incidencia concreta que pueden tener en nuestro sector. Por ello, no nos queda otra alternativa que seguir trabajando unidos y dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos.”

Gómez believes that “the economic effects of the pandemic in the medium and long term are going to be inevitable, although it will not be easy to estimate the specific incidence in our sector.

Therefore, we have no alternative other than to carry on working together and giving our all.”

In the promotional aspect, and after the successful marketing campaigns carried out in recent years, the cooperative will continue working on its brand strategy that strengthens and consolidates as ‘top of mind’, year after year for the category amongst Spanish consumers.

Desde sus paradas en el Pabellón B y D del Mercado Central de Frutas y Hortalizas de Mercabarna, hub alimentario del sur de Europa y mercado muy competitivo, la compañía catalana comercializa fresón para el mercado interior y el de exportación. “El volumen destinado a la exportación dibuja una línea ascendente en los últimos años, alcanzando alrededor del 40% del total comercializado durante el pasado curso”, analiza el directivo.

Además de contar con esta oferta completa y consolidada, la filosofía de la empresa Escandell es ofrecer un buen servicio a proveedores y agricultores y, al mismo tiempo, dar la mejor selección de productos a cada cliente.

En clave comercialización, el ejecutivo apunta que “el día a día es muy cambiante porque se respira mucha incertidumbre por el momento que nos está tocando vivir; en este sentido la experiencia vivida

En cuanto a producción, el gerente de Frutas Escandell apunta que “de los datos de nuestros productores se desprende que el volumen de producción de esta campaña será similar al de la anterior” y que “se consolida la apuesta por la diversificación de cultivos iniciada en campañas precedentes.

In addition to relying on this complete, consolidated offer, the philosophy of the Escandell company is to offer a good service to suppliers and farmers and, at the same time, to give the best selection of products to each client.

In terms of marketing, the executive points out that “the routine daily work is ever changing because there is a great deal of uncertainty due to the current circumstances; in this sense, the experience of the first lockdown was a very positive learning curve that should be applied in this campaign.”

Regarding production, the Manager of Frutas Escandell comments that “from our producers’ data, we can deduce that the volume of production from this campaign will be similar to the amount from the previous one” and that “the commitment to diversification of crops started in previous campaigns has been consolidated.”

as exportaciones de brásicas mantienen una línea estable. En la última campaña, el volumen total se aproximó a las 500.000 t (320.000 de brócoli, 80.000 de coliflor, y el resto de otro tipo), de las cuales Murcia aporta un 70% (250 mill. kg de brócoli y 50 de coliflor). En 2020/21 estas cifras deberían mantenerse o ser ligeramente superiores.

Respecto a la superficie ecológica hay una tendencia clara al incremento de cultivos por el aumento en la demanda.

La pandemia ha impulsado el consumo de brásicas. ¿Cómo han evolucionado las ventas y qué expectativas tienen?

Se ha notado un incremento en la demanda de verduras en general, y de brócoli o coliflor en particular, tanto bío como convencional, especialmente al inicio de la pandemia. En los retailers es donde más se ha notado, pero otras líneas se han visto muy mermadas como el Horeca.

Las expectativas a largo plazo son buenas a nivel nacional y de exportación. La demanda seguirá creciendo, son auténticas medicinas naturales y saludables. ¿Qué precios medios está obteniendo el brócoli en esta primera fase de la campaña?

La situación en las semanas 46 y 47 ha sido complicada para la producción en general, y el brócoli no escapa a esta realidad, que es totalmente diferente a la del año pasado donde los precios estaban en niveles más normales y razonables. La campaña está teniendo comportamientos erráticos de oferta, 46 Fruittoday

demanda y precios que, en muchos casos, no cubren ni de lejos los costes.

“No podemos quedarnos de brazos cruzados si la campaña sigue por estos derroteros”

El clima tiene su efecto tanto en origen, adelantando plantaciones, como en destino, favoreciendo el alargamiento de campañas locales o que el consumo sea mayor o menor, pero no son entendibles los precios que está recibiendo el campo, en comparación con los que vemos en los

lineales, máxime cuando la demanda no ha sido mala, y además se está haciendo un esfuerzo brutal para seguir aprovisionando a los mercados. Determinados operadores han estado ‘pescando’ en río revuelto y aprovechando una situación muy puntual que debe cambiar. No podemos quedarnos de brazos cruzados si la campaña continúa por estos derroteros.

Al ser el brócoli un producto muy enfocado a la exportación y con ventas basadas en programas, ¿cómo les afecta la Ley de la Cadena?

Nos plantea muchas dudas y dificultades en su aplicación, especialmente en la exportación.

El brócoli cada vez tiene más mercado en España y obviamente está igual de afectado que otros productos. Vemos muchas lagunas: ¿cómo se articulan situaciones de crisis de demanda o precios? ¿Como se definen los costes cuando hay multitud de variables que pueden incidir en ellos? Al fi-

nal, se quiere regular el producto español, pero olvidamos controlar lo que nos viene de fuera, que llega muchas veces sin el control adecuado ni suficientes garantías alimentarias, afectando gravemente a la rentabilidad de las producciones locales.

Este año supone un punto de inflexión por el Brexit. ¿Cómo se preparan las empresas de Proexport?

Seguimos a la expectativa de la negociación final, pues de ello dependerá en gran parte la competitividad en este destino.

El hecho de no tener aranceles, a través de un acuerdo positivo, ayudará a mitigar el impacto del cambio de escenario en las relaciones con Reino Unido. Lo que es claro es que la forma de operar cambiará drásticamente, pues añadimos una serie de trámites aduaneros, fitosanitarios y logísticos que supondrán un coste extra al que tendrán que hacer frente los importa-

dores o cadenas con las que se opere, y el consumidor final. De ahí la importancia de llegar a un acuerdo, pues sería muy difícil hacer frente a un arancel medio del 11,5%, o en el caso del brócoli, del 8%.

Aun así, se plantean muchas dudas el 1 de enero. No sabemos cómo pueden afectar los controles en la frontera, si pueden originarse colas y retrasos o cómo reaccionará la libra frente al euro.

“Some operators have been fishing in troubled waters” Fruit Today interviewed the chairman of the Proexport’s Sectorial Association for Broccoli and Cauliflowers, Juan Manuel Ruiz, regarding the Covid-19 campaign and Brexit Brassica exports are remaining stable. In the last campaign, the total volume approached 500,000 t (320,000 of broccoli, 80,000 of cauliflower, and the remainder of other types), of which Murcia contributes 70% (250 mill. kg of broccoli and 50 of cauliflower). In 2020/21 these figures should be maintained or could become slightly higher. Regarding the ecological surface area, there is a clearly rising trend in crops due to the increase in demand.

The pandemic has boosted the consumption of brassicas. How have sales evolved and what expectations do you have?

We have seen an increase in the demand for vegetables in general, and for broccoli and cauliflower in particular, both bio and conventional, especially at the start of the pandemic. It has been noted most in the retailers, but other lines have been seriously reduced, such as the Horeca channel.

The long term expectations are good, both nationally and for exports. The demand will continue to grow; these vegetables are true natural, healthy medicines.

What average prices are being obtained for broccoli in this first phase of the campaign?

The situation in weeks 46 and 47 has been complicated for the production in general and broccoli hasn’t escaped this reality, which is totally different to last year, when prices were at more normal and reasonable levels. The campaign is seeing erratic behaviour in offer, demand and prices which, often, by a long chalk, do not even cover costs.

The weather has its effect both at origin, bringing plantations forward, and at the destination, encouraging the lengthening of local campaigns or meaning that consumption is higher or lower, but the prices that are being received in the fields are not comprehensible, in comparison with what we are seeing on the supermarket shelves, especially when the demand has not been bad and an incredible effort is being made to continue supplying the markets. Certain operators have been ‘fishing’ in troubled waters and taking advantage of a very specific situation that has to change. We cannot just sit back and do nothing if the campaign continues in this direction.

competitiveness at this destination will depend on this to a large extent. Not having tariffs, through a positive agreement, will help to mitigate the impact of the change of setting in the relations with the United Kingdom. What is clear is that the operating methods will change drastically, as we will add a series of customs, plant protection and logistics procedures which will mean an extra cost that importers or the chains they work with will have to cope with, along with end consumers. This is where the importance lies in reaching an agreement, as it would be very difficult to cope with an average tariff of 11.5% or in the case of broccoli, of 8%.

As broccoli is a product that is very focused on export and with sales based on programmes, how does the Food Chain Law affect you?

Even so, many questions are still outstanding about the 1st of January. We don’t know how the border controls could affect us, if they could cause tailbacks and delays or how the pound will react against the euro.

Its application is causing us many problems and difficulties, particularly for export.

Broccoli has a growing market in Spain and obviously it has been affected in the same way as other products. We are seeing many loopholes: how are crisis situations in demand or prices structured?

How are the costs defined when there are many variables that could affect them? In the end, the law regulates Spanish products, but we are forgetting to control the produce coming from outside the country, which often arrives without the correct control or sufficient food guarantees, seriously affecting the profitability of local productions.

We are convinced that it will remain loyal to Spanish broccoli. In Murcia we have a privileged climate, we can grow during periods when almost no other place can do so, with proven, recognised and highly appreciated quality. In the case of a hard Brexit, solutions will have to be found and the offer, demand and prices balanced with the new rules.

The British market is the second most important after Germany for the export of fruit and vegetables from the Region, and it can’t be replaced from one day to the next. We continue working to open up new markets.

La empresa tiene nuevas líneas de producto semiprocesado en floretas y ultima su proyecto de cremas Cricket Bio para 2021 gama de cremas ecológicas baja la marca Cricket Bio. Con ella pretenden atender al interés que hay por los productos naturales, orgánicos y sin ingredientes artificiales, y llegar a consumidores que buscan alimentos saludables, pero en formatos más cómodos. Inicialmente lanzarán dos versiones, de brócoli y coliflor, con un sabor agradable, textura suave y color ‘real’, sin aditivos. La idea es iniciar la comercialización en España y estudiar su comportamiento para ir introduciéndola en la exportación.

Especial atención merece la coliflor, una verdura con “mucha proyección” que les ha hecho crecer en los últimos 3 años y con la que tienen expectativas de seguir ampliando su cuota de mercado. “Es un producto complejo, porque las exigencias del consumidor son altas: busca esa tonalidad blanco nieve y un calibre adaptado a las nuevas tendencias del mercado. Llevamos años estudiando nuevas variedades y trabajando con casas de semillas hasta dar con materiales que nos han llevado a convertirnos también en un referente en este producto”. Ahora son capaces de dar servicio 52 semanas al año con un producto de calidad y adaptado a los nuevos tamaños que demandan los consumidores.

Looking to next year, the development of a new range of ecological creams is in the final phase, under the brand name Cricket Bio. They intend to use this range to deal with the interest in natural, organic products, without any artificial ingredients and to reach consumers who are looking for healthy food, but in more convenient formats. Initially they will launch two versions, broccoli and cauliflower, with a pleasant flavour, smooth texture and a ‘real’, additive-free colour. The idea is to start marketing in Spain, studying the behaviour in order to subsequently begin introducing it in the export range.

Taking advantage of Fruit Attraction LIVEConnect, they presented this line at the Innovation Hub, and were finalists in the Fresh Produce category, a good omen for the success that these products could have once they are on the market.

“Balance must be sought” In this campaign, Campo de Lorca is backing a continuist line in its star product, broccoli, maintaining both the volume and surface area of 2019/20. “We prefer to be consistent and look for a balance between supply and demand,” Toñi Piernas, head of communication, explains. And the fact is that, although the previous campaign concluded with good figures due to the increase in the programmes caused by the coronavirus (which turned this product into a “basic” item in the shopping basket), the general increase in the surface area and the mild temperatures have meant the campaign has started off with bad prices due to an excess in offer.

Campo de Lorca is seeing most growth in the bio segment. “The trend continues and in order to respond to the demand, we have increased the production by 18% compared to the previous year, both in broccoli and in cauliflower.” Both now represent almost 10% of the company’s total production.

Cauliflower deserves special attention; a vegetable with “great possibilities”, which has made the company grow over the past 3 years and with which they expect to continue extending their market share. “It is a complicated product, because consumer demands are high: they are looking for a snow white head and a size that is adapted to the new market trends. We have been studying new varieties for years now, working with seed companies until obtaining materials that have also made us into a reference in this product.”

Now they can serve the produce 52 weeks of the year, with a quality product, adapted to the new sizes demanded by consumers.

KPE refuerza su ‘eco’

ettle Produce Spain (KPE) continúa su apuesta por la producción ecológica de brásicas, y este año sumará un 20% más de superficie respecto al año pasado, mientras mantiene las cifras de convencional con 12.000 t previstas en 2020/21.

Siempre que hay plantaciones no programadas para probar suerte, y especular, se pueden causar distorsiones en los mercados en momentos puntuales, pero no olvidemos que hablamos de producciones de un ciclo relativamente corto, que puede animar o desanimar al agricultor muy rápidamente, además, hoy en día cada vez se produce más profesionalmente”, recuerda el Director Comercial Juan Manuel Ruiz Soler.

“Tenemos todo previsto para afrontar el Brexit”

Otra de las líneas en las que crece es en coliflor y col picuda, de las que prevé comercializar 14 millones de piezas. Su catálogo se completa con otras brásicas como Kale, col Savoy o Romanesco.

KPE sigue fiel a su línea de trabajo, basada en programas. “No entra en nuestra filosofía especular con plantaciones libres.

En un 2020 complicado no solo por la pandemia, sino también por el Brexit, el clima en KPE es de tranquilidad. Una sensación que nace de la consciencia de tener la tarea hecha. “Llevamos tiempo preparándonos y tenemos, en principio, todo organizado y previsto para afrontar esta nueva situación. Obvia-

mente tener un partner sobre el terreno (la filial inglesa) nos ayuda a comprender de primera mano como se instrumentará toda la actividad, además de tener acceso a información que de otra manera tardaría más en llegar”.

KPE sigue innovando en productos y formatos, y actualmente se centra en el desarrollo de una línea de bolsas de floretas sin lavar, con distintas mezclas de producto en función de las necesidades de los compradores. A nivel comercial, tratan de diversificar la cartera de clientes buscando nichos que se adapten a su filosofía y forma de trabajo.

KPE continues innovating in products and formats, and currently it is concentrating on developing a line of bags of unwashed florettes, with different product mixtures in terms of the purchasers’ requirements. On a commercial level, they are trying to diversify their client portfolio, seeking out market niches that adapt to their philosophy and working methods.

Bejo mantiene su apuesta innovadora y eleva sus ventas de brásicas un 8% como consecuencia de la pandemia muy plano, para trasplantes de septiembre a enero. Y en el segmento snack, cuentan con los palitos de colirrábano ‘crispy’ Konan.

En otro ámbito, el de las coles, cabe destacar a Botran (col blanca con resistencia a espigado) y Davaro (col roja), así como la variedad de Kale Oldenbor, para plantaciones de otoño-invierno, que supone una mejora respeto a la variedad de Reflex por su mayor uniformidad y vigor.

El departamento de I+D de Bejo se afana en la búsqueda de nuevas variedades que aporten un plus a los diferentes eslabones de la cadena, incidiendo especialmente en la adaptación climatológica a las distintas zonas de cultivo, las resistencias y una mayor adaptación a la falta de agua.

a pandemia lleva aparejada una crisis económica que afecta a los consumidores, pero en Bejo tienen claro que, pese a la coyuntura, es vital “seguir diferenciándonos”. Ellos lo hacen con productos de todo tipo. Desde el ‘delicatessen’ Redi, que obtuvo el premio Innovation Hub 2020 en su modalidad de Fresh Product en Fruit Attraction, a otros más cotidianos como las coliflores. No en vano, las brásicas son consideradas como ‘superalimentos’, ya que, gracias a su alto contenido en vitaminas y propiedades, refuerzan el sistema inmunológico. Un driver que ha cobrado fuerza desde que irrumpió la Covid-19. Solo en Bejo han incrementado sus ventas de semillas de brásicas entre un 7-8% este año.

En coliflor y colirrábano sus variedades tienen presencia en los programas de las principales empresas del sector, explica Damián Pallarés, delegado comercial Murcia y Almería norte.

Sus últimas innovaciones en este segmento son Caniego (muy precoz, para trasplantes de pleno verano y finales de agosto a inicio de septiembre en Murcia), Benidorm (trasplantes de octubre, con ciclo de 125 días para recolecciones de febrero) y Alcala (trasplantes de octubre a diciembre en Andalucía).

This is a driving force that has gathered momentum since the arrival of Covid-19. At Bejo alone, they have increased their brassica seed sales by 7-8% this year.

In cauliflowers and kohlrabi, their varieties are present on the programmes of the main companies in the sector, according to Damián Pallarés, sales delegate for Murcia and North Almeria.

The latest innovations in this segment are Caniego (very early, for transplanting in midsummer and at the end of August until the start of September in Murcia); Benidorm (transplanting in October, with a 125 day cycle for harvesting in February) and Alcala (transplanting from October to December in Andalusia).

With regard to kohlrabi, the latest launch is Kosma, characterised by its upright leaves and very flat bulb, for transplanting from September to January. And in the snack segment, they have crispy Konan kohlrabi sticks.

Moving over to the cabbage area, Botran is worth mentioning (white cabbage that is resistant to sprouting) and Davaro (red cabbage), as well as the Oldenbor kale variety, for autumn-winter plantations, meaning an improvement compared to the Reflex variety due to its greater uniformity and robustness.

Bejo’s R&D department is focusing on the search for new varieties that bring an added bonus to the different links in the chain, with particular emphasis on climatological adaptation to the different growing regions, resistances and a greater adaptation to the lack of water.

“All the types can be replaced using this system: Batavia, trocadero, open heart romaines, designed for fresh-cut processing…” Additionally, all their Teen Leaf incorporate the Knox property that delays oxidation, a bonus when cutting in the fields, but also for the fresh range at a time when the consumption of pieces has increased in homes. “To prevent oxidation being seen on the trunk, the companies covered it with the packaging; this is not necessary with Knox.”

Owing to the fact that people are going out less and cooking more, there has been “an important upswing in sales in concepts such as Snack Lettuce”, with a ‘spoon-shaped’ leaf, which allows healthy dishes to

be cooked without needing any other edible ‘support’ (bread for example) or containers (plates, etc). In this line they are launching new varieties that complete the range, such as Guayabita.

Rijk Zwaan is strengthening the promotion of materials in line with the rising trends. This is the case of indoor crops, which continue growing, not only in Central Europe, but also in Spain (Madrid, the Basque Country, Galicia, Navarra, Barcelona…), dragged along by the local consumption trend. “Hydroponics allows cultivation anywhere and it does not use pesticides. It is frequently used for special lettuces such as Salanova”. In this segment, they have “new combinations of Salatrio with Salanovas that bring longer shelf-life.”

Another trend in recent years, flavour, can be clearly seen in concepts such as Fun Tasty Cos. “They are crunchy, very juicy and with a pleasant flavour and they also have the best of icebergs and romaines, with an oval shape, in between both types, but with a longer shelf-life than romaines, in line with the plastic-free trend.”

Enza Zaden continues researching and developing new varieties of leafy vegetables adapted to the different growing methods: ridging, high-density planting or the Eazyleaf brand concept for direct sowing or transplanting and mechanised harvesting.

The seed company offers an extensive portfolio with Iceberg, lettuce hearts, Little Gem and mini Romaines for complete cycles, with all the resistances and for the different growing regions on mainland Spain. Many with 100% ecological seed options from its subsidiary, Vitalis.

This year it is presenting new developments in different categories. In Iceberg, it is launching four: Kravitz, Enio, Nahifa and E01E11608 (Pelayo type, with resistance to Bremia and aphids, “which is not necessary in the winter, but with climate change could become so,” explains Vicente Sanz, the Sales Manager). In the Romaines segment, the mini Xucinta continues to be promoted, providing strength in the winter and with all the resistances; and for export, Anduril (English heart for early harvests), Delcaso (giving continuity to Anduril in the Winter) and Babieca (for two pieces on the English market.)

In endives, they are incorporating the smooth endive, Toniance and the curly version for spring, Miliari, the two with high tolerance to fringe burn.

In brassicas, they have conventional cauliflowers such as Chione (90 day cycle, it brings whiteness and uniformity par excellence); Maimon (120125 days, strong plant with very compact, white heads); and Teleno (110 days for spring harvesting).

e cumple ya un año desde que Murciana de Vegetales lanzara su nueva lechuga Caribú®. Una variedad autóctona recuperada gracias al trabajo de I+D+i en variedades tradicionales de lechuga con el IMIDA. Esta variedad ofrece un sabor dulce con hojas de romana y puntas lanceoladas, dando una original mezcla en la ensalada.

Caribú® se une a otras especialidades de Murciana de Vegetales que se distinguen por su sabor, textura, vida útil y garantías sanitarias. Es el caso de su Little Gem, que cultivan en exclusiva en España.

“Tras estudios en nuestra parcela experimental y análisis en nuestro laboratorio acreditado por ENAC, consideramos que es la mejor variedad para confeccionar nuestros Corazones Dulces por su característico color verde-amarillo, textura crujiente e intensidad de su sabor. Ésta es una forma más de diferenciarnos de nuestros competidores y de permitir que nuestros clientes se diferencien cuando vendan nuestros productos”, explican desde la empresa.

Otras variedades de su portfolio son la Romana, Mini Romana y Frillice. Por otro lado, son la única empresa que produce y comercializa tres variedades de lechuga roja: Baby roja, Mini Romana roja y Cresta®.

Caribú® is added to other specialities from Murciana de Vegetales that are distinguished by their flavour, texture, shelf-life and health guarantees. This is the case of its Little Gem, which they grow exclusively in Spain. “After studies on our experimental plot and analysis in our ENAC-accredited laboratory, we consider that it is the best variety to make our ‘Corazones Dulces’ (Sweet Gem Hearts) due to its characteristic green-yellow colour, crunchy texture and full flavour. It is one way to differentiate ourselves from our competitors and allow our clients to also become differentiated when they sell our products,” sources from the company explain.

Other varieties from its portfolio include Romaine, Mini Romaine and Frillice. Moreover, it is the only company that produces and markets three varieties of red lettuce: Baby red, Mini Romaine red and Cresta®. “Cresta® is a red lettuce variety that exclusively belongs to them, developed after over nine years of research by the R&D+i department, using traditional selection. Its content in anthocyanin and total polyphenols makes it stand out.”

Its ecological line of Romaine, Little Gem and Iceberg is also worth mentioning, which are available during the winter season.

The company is very aware of the environment and the application of fewer chemical products on its production, replacing them with natural products. To do this, it is experimenting with cultivation on nitrate-free land, reducing the risk of contamination and environmental impact.

Calabaza

La calabaza butternut despega con fuerza

La introducción de variedades híbridas (butternut), por parte de Sakata ha supuesto un antes y un después en el desarrollo del cultivo y en su despegue comercial

a situación era muy distinta hace tan solo dos décadas cuando predominaban las variedades de calabaza locales y tradicionales de polinización abierta dimensionadas hacia los mercados más cercanos a su cultivo.

“Todo ello en un contexto en el que lo saludable impera en la mente del consumidor y evidentemente la calabaza lo es porque contiene importantes vitaminas, minerales y carotenos y posee un elevado sabor dulce, además de que su formato actual se adapta mejor a los modelos de familia imperantes” remarca Joaquín Navarro, responsable de cucurbitáceas de Sakata Seed Ibérica.

“Las variedades futuras aún tendrán más grados brix”

Pero ¿cuáles han sido las verdaderas causas de esta evolución? El programa de desarrollo a nivel mundial de Sakata, permite, desde 2008, contar con tres variedades híbridas (Ariel F1, Veenas F1 y Pluto F1) que han supuesto una importante mejora de la productividad en campo, un mayor aprovechamiento de la pulpa y la prolongación del periodo postcosecha.

Con estas características nutricionales más las mejoras aportadas al cultivo, la calabaza se ha convertido en un producto objeto de deseo que cumple con las expectativas requeridas por el mercado: es interesante para el agricultor, para los operadores comerciales y para la distribución, que busca un producto con poco destrío, homogéneo y con posibilidades de estar en el lineal 12 meses.

La butternut ofrece un mayor aprovechamiento de la pulpa

Respecto a este último punto, el suministro de las variedades butternut ya está garantizado de junio a marzo, y Sakata, como firma líder en su desarrollo, ya trabaja en cumplimentar todo el calendario.

El portfolio de Sakata incluye tres variedades bajo un mismo formato, pero de distinto tamaño: Veenas F1 es la variedad más reducida. Su peso ronda los 800 gr y resulta muy apropiada para la exportación.

Le sigue Ariel F1, con un tamaño uniforme, su peso está entre 800 y 1.200 gr. Su pulpa es naranja oscuro y posee un alto conte-

nido en azúcar, con tolerancia al rajado y al cuello delgado. Resulta una variedad muy apta para la exportación en fresco. Y Pluto F1 es la de mayor tamaño, entre 1,5 y 2,5 kg. Se trata de la calabaza más adecuada para la industria y para el mercado español, que pide un producto algo más grande que los europeos.

España es el primer productor y exportador europeo de calabaza con una producción de unas 160.000 toneladas, repartidas en 3.700 hectáreas. Todo ello en los últimos 15 años.

La producción más tradicional de calabaza se ha dado en el área mediterránea, pero hoy ya está plenamente extendido como un cultivo de técnicas modernas en amplias de zonas de Castilla-La Mancha y se vislumbra como un complemento a las

producciones de melón y sandía. Como dato, destacar que en La Mancha la superficie actual dedicada a la butternut es de unas 425 hectáreas, cuando hace dos años tan sólo era de 200.

A pesar de este boom, las cifras de consumo en España siguen siendo muy bajas comparadas con otros países.

Sin datos oficiales, Navarro cree que la ingesta es de unos 500 gramos por habitante. “Para incrementar este consumo deberíamos fijarnos en otros países como el Reino Unido, donde el producto se comercializa bajo una enorme variedad de formatos: chips, spaghetti dulces, sopas, etc.”

El evento contó con la presencia de expertos profesionales de todos los eslabones de la cadena, desde la genética y producción hasta el lineal del supermercado, acabando con la sabiduría culinaria de los chefs Hermanos Torres.

Jornada sobre Calabaza

Desde Brasil, Israel Leite, director del equipo de mejora de Sakata para todo el mundo apuntó que “en el tipo butternut se han alcanzado unos parámetros de calidad muy elevados con niveles de azúcar de 13º y 14º brix, que seguirán subiendo con las variedades futuras, al tiempo que habrá una mejora en el sabor porque no sólo el azúcar es el responsable de éste.”

Bajo el patrocinio de Sakata Seed Ibérica y Vicente Peris, la revista Fruit Today organizó la jornada ‘Auge de la calabaza: cultivo y dinamización del consumo bajo nuevos formatos’

Así mismo, el genetista afirmó que “el rendimiento de los cultivos ha llegado a duplicarse y triplicarse en los últimos 20 años, consiguiendo un producto más uniforme en tamaño y cuya estandarización se hace

más interesante para la distribución.”

Respecto a los últimos desarrollos en mejora vegetal y resistencias a diversas enfermedades remarcó que “son aspectos que nunca cesarán y a los que debemos aplicar todos los conocimientos técnicos y científicos, sin olvidar el calentamiento del planeta, aunque la calabaza se cultive en climas cálidos.”

Por parte de la firma Vicente Peris, su director de marketing, Christian Palacios, explicó que “la calabaza tiene un gran recorrido de consumo y se ha visto beneficiada por los formatos en cuarta gama y quinta gama. La aparición de la calabaza cortada y pelada ha sido una revolución en el lineal y ha contribuido a aumentar su consumo, al igual que lo han hecho las cremas a base de calabaza.”

Por su parte, Andrés Puerto, gestor de compras de Cooperativa Consum, una de las cadenas de distribución con una mejor segmentación y variedad de calabazas, remarcó que “en Consum se ha registrado, en los últimos 10 años, un incremento muy elevado y constante, tanto a través del producto fresco, como de la cuarta gama o con las cremas de La Línea Verde, un formato que ha tenido unos crecimientos de hasta un 30% anual.”

Alberto Solaz, del departamento comercial de Naturvega, filial de la firma La Línea Verde, destacó que las dos referencias de mayor éxito de sus cremas contienen calabaza como principal ingrediente. “Trabajamos con cooperativas que nos sirven material fresco listo para cocinar sin aditivos ni colorantes y mantenemos el aroma y el sabor. Los populares chefs españoles, Hermanos Torres, aportaron la visión más culinaria de este cultivo, destacando su preferencia por la variedad butternut por su mayor índice de carnosidad. Igualmente, explicaron la versatilidad del producto, que se puede emplear tanto para platos dulces como salados, dando a conocer unas pequeñas pautas para aprender a cortar el producto.

Como singularidad, Vicente Peris cuenta con hornos especializados para asar el producto. “La calabaza asada, los dulces de calabaza o los buñuelos han estado siempre presentes en la cocina valenciana.”

But what have been the real reasons behind this development? Globally, Sakata’s programme has had three hybrid varieties since 2008 (Ariel F1, Veenas F1 and Pluto F1) which have meant an important improvement in productivity in the fields, greater use of the flesh and an extension of the post-harvest period.

“All of this within a context in which healthy foods are taking priority in consumers’ minds, and obviously squashes are included in this category due to their important vitamin, mineral and carotene content and because they have a sweet flavour, in addition to the fact that the current format adapts better to the prevailing family models,” comments Joaquín Navarro, head of cucurbit at Sakata Seed Ibérica.

With these nutritional characteristics, plus the improvements made to the crop, the squash has become a product that is an object of desire that meets the expectations required by the market: it is interesting for farmers, for commercial operators and for food retail distribution, which is looking for a product with few discards, homogeneous and that could be on the supermarket shelves 12 months of the year.

Regarding the last point, the supply of butternut varieties has already been guaranteed over a 9-month period, from June to March, and Sakata, as the leading company in the development of this variety, is already working on completing the entire calendar.

Sakata’s portfolio includes three varieties with the same format, but in different sizes: Veenas F1 is the smallest variety. It weighs around 800 grams and it very good for export. It is followed by Ariel F1, with a uniform size; it weights between 800 and 1,200 grams. It has dark orange flesh and it has a high sugar content, with tolerance to splitting and thin neck. It is a variety that is highly suitable for export fresh. And Pluto F1 is the largest in size, between 1.5kg and 2.5 kg. It is the squash that is best suited to industry and to the Spanish market, which asks for a larger product than other Europeans.

In spite of this boom, the consumption figures in Spain continue to be very low compared to other countries. Without any official data, Navarro believes that intake is around 500 grams per inhabitant. “To increase this consumption, we must look at other countries such as the United Kingdom, where the product is marketed in a very wide variety of formats: chips, spaghetti, sweets, soups, etc.”

The company from Valencia, which has squash available 12 months of the year, also advocates keeping the more traditional varieties such as Roteña and Carruécano, as well as butternut squash. “We are strong defenders of the flavour and after four decades of experience with squash, we know what these older varieties mean in regions such as the Valencian Community, where consumption is deep-rooted.”

As a peculiarity, Vicente Peris has specialised ovens to roast the product. “Roast squash, sweets made from squash or fritters have always been present in Valencian cooking.”

David Casanoves, CEO of Yummy Fresh, a Valencian company with a producing subsidiary in Peru, which supplies Europe with squashes in counter-season, indicated that Spain could become the European hub for squashes, “not only as a significant importing country, but also due to its climatic advantage as a producing country.”

Casanoves stated that “the growth expectations could be very high when new developments appear, as is happening in the United Kingdom or Japan, where squash is eaten as spaghetti, chips, lasagnes or waffles.”

From Brazil, Israel Leite, team manager for improvement at Sakata for the entire world, pointed out that “the butternut type has reached very high-quality parameters with sugar levels of 13º and 14º Brix, which will continue to rise with future varieties, at the same time as there is an improvement in the flavour because this is not only caused by the sugar.”

Likewise, the geneticist affirmed that “the crop yield has doubled and tripled over the past 20 years, obtaining a more uniformly-sized product, the standardisation of which makes it more interesting for retail distribution.”

Spain is the leading European producer and exporter of squashes, grown over 3,700 hectares with a production of around 160,000 tonnes. All of this has happened over the past 15 years.

With respect to the latest developments in vegetable improvement and resistances to different diseases, he remarked that “they are aspects that will never stop progressing and to which we must apply all our technical and scientific knowledge, without forgetting global warming, although squashes are grown in warm climates.”

Alberto Solaz, from the sales department at Naturvega, a subsidiary of the company La Línea Verde, emphasised that the two most successful references of their creams contain squash as the main ingredient. “We work with cooperatives that supply us with fresh material, ready for cooking without any additives or colourings and we maintain the aroma and the flavour of the squash. Squash also has an important development as an ecological crop and it is becoming very significant in foods for children and babies.”

Andrés Puerto, Purchasing Manager at Cooperativa Consum, one of the retail distribution chains with the largest segmentation and variety of squashes, commented that “at Consum, over the past 10 years, a very high, constant increase has been recorded through fresh product, such as convenience food or with the creams from La Línea Verde, a format that has seen growth of up to 30% per year.”

The popular Spanish chefs, the Torres Brothers provided their more culinary view of this crop, emphasising their preference for the Butternut variety, due to its greater fleshiness. Likewise, they explained the versatility of the product, which can be used both for sweet and savoury dishes, providing some guidelines for learning how to cut the produce.

Este ‘todoterreno’ se enfoca también a Murcia para aire libre (trasplantes de mitad de marzo al 10 de abril) y Castilla-La Mancha (abril) con manta térmica. Junto con Cencibel, que completa la gama al aire libre, es una de sus principales novedades esta campaña. “Con ellas ampliamos el concepto de sabor de larga duración en melón iniciado con Airen y Macabeo”.

Graciano

H

ace un par de años Syngenta empezó a sacar al mercado las primeras variedades de melón de su línea de nueva genética con frutos de carne más firme y con más postcosecha sin sacrificar el sabor tradicional.

Una gama que ha llegado a Almería de la mano de Graciano, para trasplantes de mitad de enero a marzo en la zona. La variedad tiene la precocidad que se

necesita para comenzar el ciclo, presenta buen comportamiento al rajado (necesaria por las condiciones de humedad del invernadero), la postcosecha que demanda la cadena… “No es nada fácil dar la talla en este ciclo en Almería, pero el año pasado lo tuvieron varios productores y el comportamiento fue muy bueno”, asegura Víctor García, responsable de melón y sandía.

Zeraim lanza el amarillo Ibiza, con resistencia a oídio y pulgón

Tanto Graciano como Cencibel disponen de un amplio paquete de resistencias que incluye oídio y pulgón y se caracterizan por un buen comportamiento a rajado de fruto.

Además, tienen doble aptitud para pieza entera y corte en tienda o en salas blancas de procesado, una demanda ya consolidada por la comodidad y plus de fiabilidad que supone para el consumidor, y por la versatilidad que ofrece a la distribución, ya que permite sacar dos piezas cuando hay abundancia de calibres grandes.

De Graciano destaca “su acabado y escriturado de calidad y la facilidad de manejo”.

Y de Cencibel, su “gran rusticidad y aguante hasta final de ciclo con garantías (buen nivel de azúcar). En este caso, la variedad está más orientada al aire libre: para Murcia (trasplantes posteriores a Graciano, de mitad de abril a principios de mayo) y La Mancha (mitad de mayo a final de junio).

Cencibel era “muy necesario” y supone una evolución del programa de piel de sapo, con rendimientos comerciales muy altos, algo fundamental en el segmento.

New genetics reach Almeria Syngenta is launching Graciano, its first variety with semi-firm flesh for the province A few years ago, Syngenta started to bring the first melon varieties from its new genetic line onto the market, with firmer-fleshed fruits and greater postharvest, without giving up the traditional flavour.

This range has reached Almeria with Graciano, for transplanting from mid-January to mid-March. The variety has the earliness needed to start the cycle off; it shows good behaviour regarding splitting (necessary due to the humidity conditions in the greenhouses), the post-harvest demanded by the chain… “It is not easy to make the grade in this cycle in Almeria, but last year several producers managed it and the behaviour was very good,” according to Víctor García, head of melons and watermelons.

Additionally, they have dual aptitude for whole pieces and those cut in the stores or in processing clean rooms, a demand that has already been consolidated due to the convenience and the bonus of reliability that it means for consumers and to the versatility that it offers the distribution, as it allows two pieces to be put on the shelves when large fruits are plentiful.

Regarding Graciano, the following stands out: “its finish and quality grooving and ease of handling.”

And for Cencibel: its “significant hardiness and endurance until the end of the cycle with guarantees (good sugar levels).” In this case, the variety is aimed more at open air plantations: for Murcia (transplants after Graciano, from mid-April to the beginning of May) and La Mancha (mid-May to the end of June.)

Cencibel was “highly necessary” and means an evolution in the piel de sapo programme, with very high sales yields, an essential point in the segment.

Under the Zeraim brand, there are two important new developments this year. The first one is Ibiza, a yellow melon that is totally aimed at export in open air crops: transplants in Murcia from mid-April to the beginning of May and June in La Mancha. It stands out due to the healthiness of its plant and its good adaptation to ecological growing, owing to its resistance to powdery mildew and aphids and it offers significant uniformity in size (1.5kg), with good flavour, crunchy pulp, good post-harvest… continuing in the same line as Party and Maillot.

The other new development is Jamaica, a black, seedless watermelon with which Zeraim is completing the range and that is finding its niche in all regions due to its important versatility. “The watermelon market is highly demanding regarding fruit quality and this material stands out precisely for this reason.” The skin, dark green without any stripes, contrasts with the deep red of the flesh, but its differential aspect lies in the flavour, as occurs with all the company’s materials. Another of the advantages of Jamaica is its high production, with sizes of 5-7 kg. For all these reasons, Victor Garcia advances that this year “we are going to have it growing with many demanding, specialist producers, in several different regions.”

n la pasada edición de los premios Innovation Award de Fruit Attraction, Minimel quedó entre los 10 finalistas de un total de 160 participantes. Esto da una pista del buen pie con el que comienza la variedad de HM.CLAUSE, pero no es el único factor. Ya el año pasado, su primer ejercicio comercial, quienes lo probaron quedaron muy satisfechos, y para la campaña que viene la empresa tiene “sensaciones muy positivas, se espera un crecimiento importante por la respuesta que estamos teniendo de comercializadores y supermercados”, asegura Venancio Manzaneque, delegado comercial y de Desarrollo de La Mancha y noreste de España.

Minimel es un “piel de sapo auténtico”, con las mismas características organolépticas y el sabor de las variedades convencionales de HM.CLAUSE, pero en formato unipersonal de 1,2-2,200kg. Su carne crujiente asegura una muy buena postcosecha y una vida útil amplia ideal para exportación. A nivel externo, presenta un escriturado longitudinal muy bonito y “raya del del primero al último”.

Valdemar F1 es “un Valverde con resistencia a oídio” y aporta un extra un extra, la resistencia a oídio (con la incorporación del gen VAT). Se recomienda para plantaciones de mitad de febrero a mitad de marzo. Sus frutos, muy homogéneos en calibre y forma, tienen un calibre ideal para exportación y un color amarillo dorado superior a la media del mercado, puntualiza José Miguel Reyes, responsable de Comunicación.

La otra novedad es el piel de sapo Valdemar F1, para plantaciones del 15 de enero al 15 de marzo. En pocas palabras es: “un Valverde F1 que incorpora la resistencia a oídio”.

La variedad sigue el alto estándar de calidad que inició Valverde hace ya 17 años, posicionándose como líder en su segmento.

Minimel is a “true piel de sapo”, with the same organoleptic characteristics and flavour of the conventional varieties from HM.CLAUSE, but in a single-person format of 1.2-2.200kg. Its crunchy flesh guarantees a very good post-harvest and an extended shelf life, ideal for export.

Externally, it has a very pretty lengthwise grooving and “it is striped from start to finish.”

Manzaneque underscores that the variety offers a “complete health pack” with resistance to powdery mildew and aphids and “it works very well in exhausted soils and shows no sudden death problems,” responding to an increasingly widespread problem in the crops in Castilla-La Mancha.

This year, the ‘mini’ has also caught

the attention of other regions: there are producers interested in Almeria (transplanting from March) and Murcia (end of April to the beginning of May).

For La Mancha, the recommended transplanting dates are from the 5th of May to the 15th of June.

HM.CLAUSE has an extensive portfolio of melons that this year is being extended with two new developments for greenhouse growing in Almeria. The first one is Calima F1, which is added to Brisa, Mistral and Terral, the flagships in Galia melons from the seed company. It upholds the standards of flavour, quality, yield and it provides an added bonus: resistance to powdery mildew (with the incorporation of the VAT gene). It is recommended for plantations from mid-February to mid-March. Its fruits, very homogeneous in size and shape, are the perfect size for export and a golden yellow colour that is above the market average, José Miguel Reyes, Marketing Manager indicates.

The other new development is the piel de sapo Valdemar F1, for plantations from the 15th of January to the 15th of March. In short, it is “a Valverde F1 that incorporates resistance to powdery mildew.” The variety continues with the high quality standard started off by Valverde 17 years ago now, ranking as the leader in its segment.

¿Cuándo nace ‘Melón de Autor Residuo Cero’? ¿Su estreno se ha realizado solo con el melón de contra estación?

derivando en un melón Residuo Cero. El objetivo final es que la totalidad de la producción se haya cultivado bajo estos parámetros. ¿Existe suficiente demanda para esta tipología de melón?

La demanda existe y el consumidor prefiere este tipo de producto, pero otra cuestión es si está dispuesto a pagarlo. Y la realidad es que le cuesta adquirirlo. Por ello, y como valor diferenciador de marca, estamos dispuestos a asumir ese coste adicional para comercializar toda nuestra producción convencional como Residuo Cero.

El cultivo de este melón se realiza en Brasil. ¿Tendrá continuidad con la campaña de producción española?

Por supuesto, la campaña española de melón, con sus diferentes regiones productoras, es muy importante ya que nos permite una continuidad de 12 meses en el lineal. ¿A qué mercados está destinado?

El proyecto en sí nace hace casi un año como consecuencia de nuestro interés y, por supuesto, del interés social existente por un producto más saludable. Las primeras remesas comerciales llevan en el mercado varios meses y se pueden adquirir ya en algunos supermercados españoles.

Los melones Residuo Cero que actualmente estamos comercializando pertenecen a las producciones que tenemos en Brasil.

Sin embargo, no ha nacido allí, sino en España, donde llevamos trabajando en este proyecto bastante tiempo. Poco a poco nuestro producto convencional está 66 Fruittoday

Históricamente, los grandes consumidores de Piel de Sapo han sido España, Portugal y sur de Francia, pero ya existe demanda en los países europeos (Alemania, Inglaterra, etc.) e incluso fuera de la órbita europea, como Emiratos Árabes.

Otro de los éxitos más importantes de la compañía ha sido ‘Le Petit Autor’. ¿Cuáles han sido las motivaciones que llevaron a este lanzamiento?

Habíamos observado algunas de las desventajas que tenían los consumidores con un melón grande. Por eso, creímos que preservando la calidad del producto, un melón de dimensiones más pequeñas significaba comodidad en la compra, en el almacenaje e incluso un ahorro ya que la

pieza pesa menos. Y, por supuesto, no había que pensar en ningún momento en cortarlo por la mitad. Y todas estas ventajas se han hecho realidad con Petit Autor. Hoy, su potencial comercial es muy elevado. Tenemos un melón con un tamaño entre 1,3 y 1,9 kilos, de excelente calidad que tiene una gran aceptación, no sólo en el mercado nacional sino también en el internacional.

Ustedes han conseguido en pocos años posicionar una marca a través de acciones publicitarias singulares y muy bien posicionadas. ¿Cree que esta estrategia ha contribuido al éxito?

Por supuesto. Aunque lo importante sea siempre la calidad del producto hay que saber transmitirlo en el canal adecuado y nosotros no tenemos prejuicios y nos gusta romper esquemas; por eso continuaremos, cuando se pueda, con la Copa Davis, los torneos de tenis y el fútbol en Asia, así como spots en televisiones autonómicas. Estamos convencidos de que hay que transmitir lo que se hace.

Melón de Autor presents its ‘Zero Residue Melon´ For the prestigious brand, the ultimate goal involves the conversion of all its conventional production to Zero Residue over the next year.

Jordi Valle, the company’s manager, explained this process to Fruit Today euromagazine.

When was the ‘Zero Residue Melón de Autor’ born? Has it only been launched with counter-season melons?

The project in itself was born almost a year ago as a result of our interest, and obviously, the social interest existing in a healthier product.

The first commercial consignments have been on the market for several months and they can already be acquired in some Spanish supermarkets.

The Zero Residue melons that we are marketing at present belong to the productions that we have in Brazil. However, it wasn’t born there, but here in Spain, where we have been working on this project for quite some time. Little by little our conventional produce is developing into Zero Residue melons. The ultimate goal is for all the production to be grown using these parameters.

Is there enough demand for this type of melon?

The demand is out there and consumers prefer this type of produce, but whether they are prepared to pay for it is quite another question. And the truth is that it is difficult to acquire it. Therefore, as a differentiating brand value, we are ready to assume this extra cost to market all our conventional production as Zero Residue.

This melon is being grown in Brazil. Will it have continuity with the Spanish production campaign?

Of course, the Spanish melon campaign, with its different producing regions is very important as it allows us to have a 12 month continuity on the supermarket shelves.

Which markets is this melon preferentially aimed at?

Historically, the important Piel de Sapo consumers have been Spain, Portugal and Southern France, but there is already demand in other European countries (Germany, England, etc.) and even outside Europe, in places such as the Arab Emirates.

Another of the company’s most important successes was Le Petit Autor. What were the reasons behind this launch?

We had seen some of the disadvantages consumers had with large melons. Therefore, we thought that, while preserving the quality of the product, a smaller melon meant greater convenience when shopping, and in storage and even savings, as the piece weighed less. And of course, at no point does it have to be cut in half. And all these advantages have become a reality with Petit Autor. Today, it has a very high sales potential. We have a melon with a size between 1.3 kilos and 1.9 kilos, with excellent quality that has good acceptance, not only on the home market, but also internationally.

In just a few years, you have managed to position a brand though unique, very well placed advertising actions. Do you think this strategy has contributed to the success?

Obviously. Although the product quality is always the most important point, knowing how to transmit it on the right channels is essential and we have no prejudices and we like to break moulds; for this reason we will continue, when it’s possible, with the Davis Cup, the tennis tournaments and football in Asia, as well as commercials on regional television stations.

We are convinced that we must transmit what we are doing.

El riego por goteo permite reducir el consumo de recursos hídricos en un 30%

El metraje también lleva a los espectadores al corazón de la montaña para descubrir las Celdas Subterráneas donde se almacenan las manzanas Melinda. Estas cuevas excavadas en las rocas de las Dolomitas son hoy el único almacén en el mundo para la conservación en frío de frutas en un ambiente subterráneo y en condiciones de atmósfera controlada. Un método de conservación que contribuye a la protección del medio ambiente, considerando el importante ahorro de agua resultante de la posibilidad de utilizar energía geotérmica para enfriar los compresores y prescindir de paneles aislantes de espuma de poliuretano, cuya eliminación genera una gran contaminación.

Además, el almacén subterráneo favorece la protección del paisaje y el territorio agrícola, evitando construir nuevos almacenes sobre el suelo.

La vocación sostenible de Melinda también

se expresa a través de otras actividades respetuosas con el medio ambiente que enmarcan todo el ciclo productivo.

El riego se realiza mediante sistemas de goteo, técnica que permite reducir en un 30% el consumo de recursos hídricos.

Asimismo, Melinda ha implementado un plan de mejora de la eficiencia energética en todas las plantas: la sustitución de todos los sistemas de iluminación de neón supuso un ahorro de alrededor de 1,2 millones de kWh al año. Todos los sistemas de refrigeración también se han mejorado con la adopción del sistema de condensación variable que permite una reducción de aproximadamente 1 millón de kWh por año.

Finalmente, el 100% de la energía que consume el Consorcio procede de fuentes renovables y autoproduce aproximadamente 6 millones de kWh de energía fotovoltaica al año.

Melinda lleva a cabo numerosas acciones destinadas a proteger el territorio y respetar el medio ambiente para asegurar que la sostenibilidad se traduzca en operaciones tangibles, necesarias tanto para los consumidores como para las familias productoras del Consorcio.

Melinda‘s sustainable vocation is also expressed through other environmentally friendly activities that distinguish the entire production cycle. Irrigation is carried out through drip systems, a technique that allows to reduce the consumption of water resources by 30%. An energy efficiency improvement plan was implemented in all the plants: the replacement of all neon lighting systems led to savings of around 1.2 million kWh per year.

All the refrigeration systems have also been improved with the adoption of the variable condensation system which allows a reduction of approximately 1 million kWh per year.

Finally, the Consortium uses 100% energy from renewable sources and self-produces about 6 million kWh of photovoltaic energy per year.

Many concrete actions aimed at protecting the territory and respecting the environment to ensure that sustainability is translated into tangible operations, precious both for consumers and for the farming families of the Consortium.

Dieciocho años después, los resultados de esta iniciativa de investigación e innovación comienzan a dar su fruto.

En febrero de 2019, se llegó a un acuerdo con la empresa neozelandesa T&G Global, que se incorporó a este programa como socio estratégico para la comercialización mundial de las licencias de las nuevas variedades de manzana y pera.

Empresas como Waimea Nurseries (Nueva Zelanda), TopFruit (Sudáfrica), Dalival (Francia), Worldwide Fruit (Reino Unido) y Montague (Australia), llevan a cabo ensayos de la variedad de manzana HOT84A1, en la que evalúan el comportamiento agronómico y la calidad.

The new variety has been evaluated on the fields of the IRTA’s (Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology) Experimental Station in Lleida, as well as the Mas Badia Experimental Station, in Girona, where the summer temperatures can rise above 40°C. The HOT84A1 is red, crunchy and juicy and the first trees will be planted in 2021.

The marketing is planned for the rest of mainland Spain over a period of three years.

Fruit Futur, the association of Catalan producers has just signed the first licence for marketing the new variety.

“The new apple varieties, created using traditional methods, are aimed at adapting to increasingly hot summers,” Joan Bonany, a specialist from the fruit growing programme at IRTA explains. Additionally, “they provide new opportunities for producers from regions where it is becoming more and more difficult to cultivate crops, and they have the advantage of being close to consumers.”

The Hot Climate Programme is formed by the IRTA, Fruit Futur (composed of Actel, Fruits

de Ponent, Nufri and Poma de Girona) and the New Zealand centre Plant & Food Research, and it is supported by the Department of Agriculture of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

A necessity since 2002 As a result of the demand by the producing sector of fruit in Catalonia, in 2002 the IRTA, Fruit Futur and the New Zealand research centre Plant & Food Research started up the Hot Climate Programme, aimed at developing new apple and pear varieties adapted to high temperatures. Almeriense y con 40 años, Jesús Barranco, es un arquitecto metido a empresario. Su perfil en LinkedIn resulta una sucesión intensa de masters y posgrados: en ESADE, en IESE, en el Instituto San Telmo y en la Universidad Camilo José Cela.

Conoció a su mujer, una ingeniera civil dominicana, en uno de ellos. Hoy son padres de tres niños de 10, 7 y 6 años.

Aunque no lo recuerda, hasta los 2 años vivió en una autocaravana, resultado de la osadía empresarial de sus padres, que vendieron la casa familiar para construir un almacén.

Le encanta cocinar y se ha quedado enganchado con la cuarta temporada de la serie Fargo, inspirada en la película de los hermanos Coen.

os citamos en la plaza de la catedral de Almería y bajo ese guiño arquitectónico que le persigue, nos explicó los detalles constructivos de la misma. Y continuamos recorrido por la Escuela de Arte y el Mercado Central, símbolo de la arquitectura del hierro del siglo XIX.

Ahora, como arquitecto, le toca explicarse.

Pero ¿cuál es el último que usted ha leído?

Estamos ante la única catedral fortaleza de España y esta plaza, hecha de mármol de Macael, es obra del arquitecto Alberto Campo Baeza. Las palmeras están dispuestas como símbolo de las tres naves interiores, y teóricamente al alcanzar su madurez, debían simular las bóvedas de las naves. Otra cuestión es que la calidad de las palmeras no haya permitido el diseño primigenio.

‘El cisne negro’ de Nassim Nicholas Taleb, un escritor libanés que dice que nuestro saber y nuestra sociedad se basan en lo que ya conocemos y no tenemos en cuenta lo que puede venir, lo que nunca ha acontecido. Yo lo veo muy en línea con la situación que hoy vivimos.

¿Tenía usted afán de titulitis con tanto Máster?

No en absoluto. Elegí muy bien cada uno de ellos en función de mis intereses. ¿Me encuentro ante un erudito?

No, ni mucho menos. Creo que es funda-

¿Se ha preguntado de dónde le viene esa inquietud intelectual?

Supongo que mis padres me inculcaron el valor del conocimiento y del esfuerzo, pero puede que haya algo genético porque, aunque provengo de una familia sin estudios que trabajaba en el campo, mi padre al acabar la jornada se iba a casa de un pariente para que le enseñara a leer y escribir, mi abuelo materno, en el cortijo,

“De niño ya me gustaba el dibujo y mientras otros iban a la playa en verano, yo iba a clases particulares” escuchaba música clásica y nos narraba las novelas de la radio. Y mi abuelo paterno nos recitaba trovos en las reuniones familiares. ¿Qué le llamó la atención para estudiar arquitectura?

Creo que, en su momento, lo consideré como un reto porque se trataba de una carrera muy técnica que combinaba aspectos de Bellas Artes. Esta fusión entre lo técnico y el arte me resultaba complejo al tiempo que me atraía. Por eso, a los 16 ó 17 años, mientras el resto de chavales estaba en la playa, yo iba a clases de dibujo técnico y geometría descriptiva.

Deduzco que es un visitante asiduo de museos.

Sí, lo soy e intento inculcárselo a mis hijos.

comidas en un cortijo y vendíamos las entradas. De hecho, algunos de nosotros aún seguimos juntándonos alrededor de una mesa.

última escapada familiar a la sierra de Tramontana en Mallorca y conforme pasaban los días, mi hijo de siete años me dijo: papá, ¿en este viaje no nos llevas a ningún museo?

Y hablando de vinos, las grandes bodegas de nuestro país recurren a la arquitectura como un elemento de seducción marketiniana ¿No se le ha pasado por la cabeza simular la idea?

Su museo preferido.

Para salirme de los circuitos más conocidos, le diré que la casa museo de Sorolla en Madrid y el de Van Gogh en Amsterdam. ¿Qué hace un arquitecto en este sector?

La vida te lleva por derroteros que no tenías previstos, pero me siento muy feliz haciendo lo que hago. Se podría decir que el atrevimiento empresarial de mis padres es el germen de este devenir. Ellos fueron los artífices de todo. El mérito es de ellos, yo recojo el testigo.

Supongo que tiene una casa preciosa. ¿La ha diseñado usted?

Al menos nos gusta a nosotros. Mi casa es el resultado de una reforma, en la que tanto mi mujer como yo volcamos nuestro conocimiento. ¿Cuál es para usted, en estos momentos, desde este punto de vista la ciudad con un mejor diseño?

Sin duda, Bilbao. Una ciudad que era gris y oscura sufrió una transformación singular que la convirtió en un espacio verde que aporta calidad de vida a sus habitantes. A 76 Fruittoday

Me han dicho que es un cocinitas y que marida muy bien los platos. ¿Esta afición dónde nace?

Sí, disfruto mucho en la cocina los fines de semana. Realmente esta inclinación nació como resultado de ir de tapas y vinos en la universidad. Con el escaso presupuesto de un estudiante, mis amigos y yo íbamos descubriendo lugares para beber vinos y conocer mejor la gastronomía. Llegamos incluso a hacer negocio porque hacíamos

No, de momento. Precisamente mi trabajo fin de carrera fue el diseño de unas bodegas del valle de Lecrín, en Granada. A raíz de este trabajo comencé a visitar las bodegas de La Rioja. Para las bodegas, la arquitectura es fundamental y les aporta un posicionamiento de marca al tiempo que una experiencia para el visitante. En Marqués de Riscal, Frank Gehry diseñó el hotel. Jesús Marino Pascual, arquitecto riojano, ha sido el autor de uno de los mejores museos del vino, el de Dinastía Vivanco. Las bodegas de Ysios son de Calatrava y Zaha Hadid intervino en las de López de Heredia. ¿Cuál es su última arquitectura culinaria?

Creo que soy muy osado cocinando, pero me sale bien. Me invento mis propias recetas y la última ha sido arroz con ternera, garbanzos y setas. Este fin de semana haremos la fiesta del ‘yo traje’, como dicen en la República Dominicana. Yo traje queso, yo traje mantecados, yo traje vino. Haremos un maridaje de quesos y vinos y luego una parrillada de carnes.

The daring cook

From Almeria, 40-year-old Jesús Barranco is an architect turned businessman. His profile on LinkedIn is an intensive list of masters and postgraduate degrees: from ESADE, from IESE, from the Instituto San Telmo and from the Universidad Camilo José Cela.

He met his wife, a Dominican civil engineer, on one of these courses. Today, they are the parents of three children aged ten, 7 and 6.

Although he does not remember it, he lived in a camper van until he was 2 years old, the result of his parents’ business audacity, who sold the family home to build a warehouse.

He loves cooking and has become hooked on the fourth season of the series ‘Fargo’, inspired by the film directed by the Coen brothers.

We arranged to meet in the square before the cathedral in Almeria and, under this architectural allusion that shadows him, he explained its construction details. And we continue our walk through the School of Art and the Central Market, a symbol of the iron architecture of the 19th century.

You chose the meeting place. Now, as an architect, it is your turn to explain it.

We are before the only cathedral fortress in Spain and this square, made of Macael marble, is the work of the architect Alberto Campo Baeza. The palm trees are arranged to symbolise the three interior naves, and, theoretically, on reaching maturity they should simulate the domed vaults over the naves. Another issue is the fact that the quality of the palm trees has not allowed the primordial design to appear.

Do so many Masters mean you like collecting qualifications?

Not at all. I chose each one carefully according to my interests.

Am I in the presence of a scholar?

No, not by a long chalk. I think it is essential to know a minimum about the world around us. And I am a believer in Umberto Eco’s theory, who had a library containing 30,000 books and one day he was asked: have you read all of them? And he replied: that is not the question; the important point is how many I have left to read.

But, what is the last book you have read?

‘The Black Swan’ by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a Lebanese writer who says that our knowledge and our society are based on what we already know and we do not take into account what could come, what never happened. I see it to be closely in line with the situation that we are living through today.

Have you ever asked yourself where this intellectual curiosity came from?

I suppose my parents instilled in me the value of knowledge and effort, but there might also be a genetic element because, although I come from a family with no education, who worked in the fields, my father went to a relative’s house after work to learn to read and write; my maternal grandfather, at the farmhouse, listened to classical music and narrated the novels on the radio to us. And my paternal grandfather recited ‘trovos’ at family get-togethers.

What caught your attention about studying architecture?

I gather that you are a frequent museum visitor.

Yes, I am and I try to instil this in my children.

Let me tell you a story: a few weeks before the lockdown we took our last family break to the Tramontana mountains in Mallorca and as the days went by, my seven-year-old son said to me: aren’t you going to take us to any museums during this trip?

Your favourite museum.

In order to get off the well-beaten track of the best known ones, I would say the Sorolla Museum in Madrid and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

What is an architect doing in this sector?

Life takes you in unforeseen directions, but I am very happy doing what I do. It could be that my parents’ business audacity was the seed behind this path. They were the architects of all this. The merit is all theirs; I just took up the baton.

I suppose that you have a beautiful house. Did you design it yourself?

Well, we like it. My house is the result of a refurbishment, in which both my wife and I have poured all our knowledge.

At present, from this point of view, which is for you the best designed city?

Bilbao, without any doubt. A city that was dark and grey underwent a unique transformation that turned it into a green space that brings quality of life to its inhabitants. The only failing that Bilbao has, in my opinion, is its weather.

I have been told that you love cooking and that you combine the dishes very well. Where has this hobby come from?

Yes, I really enjoy being in

the kitchen at the weekend. Really, this leaning came about as a result of going out for ‘tapas’ and wine at university. With our lean student budget, my friends and I looked for places to drink wine and discover the best food. We even started up a business, making meals in a farmhouse and selling entry tickets. In fact, some of us still meet up around a table.

And talking of wine, the top wineries in our country resort to architecture as a seductive marketing element. Have you ever thought of using the same idea?

Not at the moment. My end-of-degree assignment was the design of some wine cellars in the Valle de Lecrín, in Granada. This work made me start visiting the wineries in La Rioja. For the wineries, architecture is essential and it brings them brand positioning, at the same time as providing an experience for visitors. At Marqués de Riscal, Frank Gehry designed the hotel. Jesús Marino Pascual, an architect from La Rioja was the author of one of the best wine museums, for the Vivanco Dynasty. The wineries of Ysios are designed by Calatrava and Zaha Hadid participated in the winery for López de Heredia.

What is your latest cooking design?

I think I am very daring when cooking, but it turns out well. I invent my own recipes and the last one was rice with beef, chickpeas and mushrooms.

This weekend we will celebrate an ‘I brought’ party, as they are called in the Dominican Republic. I brought cheese; I brought ‘mantecados’; I brought wine. We will make up a combination of cheeses and wines and then have a meat barbecue.

I think that, at the time, I considered it a challenge because it was a highly technical career that combined aspects of Fine Art. I found this merging of technical and artistic ideas both complicated and at the same time attractive.
