China, territorio ‘inexplorado’

ecientemente realice un viaje express a China capitaneado por una de las personas, Oliver Huesmann, que mejor conoce el continente asiático y por ende el mercado chino.

Es más, me atrevo a decir, que uno de ellos dificulta enormemente las exportaciones. Aún con ello, se hace necesario que España empiece a sentar las bases de su negocio en aquel país, cree marca y sea conocida no sólo por sus equipos de fútbol, sino por su potencial hortofrutícola. Y, además, el sector de manera unánime debe poner sobre la mesa la cuestión de si es factible o no modificar a nuestro favor algunos de los requisitos que China nos pide, como el cambiar algunos grados el ‘cool treatment’. Países como Australia y Sudáfrica ya lo han hecho.

La experiencia deja huella, pero sobre todo se me antoja misión imposible explicar la magnitud de aquel país y de aquel mercado. Para una europea imbuida y ensimismada en las dimensiones del Viejo Continente, es difícil.

El gobierno chino está preocupado en cómo alimentar a su pujante población. Esta no es una afirmación baladí porque China ha comprado miles de hectáreas en Argentina, en Ucrania y ha hecho que media África esté en sus manos. Al igual que el armamentístico, el sector agroalimentario posee un componente estratégico para cualquier nación.

Y mucho más en un país donde sólo el 10% de su superficie es apta para la agricultura.

China lo sabe y por ello ha movido ficha. Su gobierno conoce que la dieta de sus habitantes se occidentaliza y demanda productos que no estaban en su comida más tradicional.

Hasta la fecha, España tiene firmados dos protocolos bilaterales de exportación (cítricos y fruta de hueso) pero es muy previsible, que en breve se firme el de uva y pronto vendrán más, entre ellos el de kaki.

La agricultura, a veces se convierte en geoestrategia y política de intercambios (ya lo vimos con Mr. Putin y casi hemos estado a punto de verlo con Mr. Trump ó lease Mr. Tweet) y como la nuestra es lo suficientemente potente, España debe afianzar sus lazos comerciales con el gigante asiático.

Estas nuevas relaciones nos permitirían no depender tanto del Viejo Continente; al que yo denominaría Pequeño Continente porque sólo las 7 provincias meridionales de China tienen más población que toda Europa. Un dato que, en términos de consumo, a nadie le puede pasar inadvertido.

No seremos imprescindibles para China, pero sí podemos formar parte de esa élite que ahora vende sus producciones en el gigante asiático, bajo las premisas de seguridad alimentaria, calidad y buen precio.

The Chinese government is concerned about how to feed its thriving population. This is not a trivial assertion because China has bought thousands of hectares in Argentina and the Ukraine, and half of Africa is now in its hands. As occurs with the arms industry, the agrifood sector has a strategic component for any country. And much more so in a country where only 10% of its surface area is suitable for farming.

China knows this, and so it has made its move. Its

Presentación del IV Congreso de Frutos Rojos

La investigación de nuevas variedades de berries y las oportunidades de nuevos mercados ejes temáticos del evento

E

l Congreso Internacional de Frutos Rojos fue presentado el pasado 8 de junio en la Casa Colón de Huelva, el mismo escenario que lo acogerá los próximos 20 y 21 de junio.

El presidente de Freshuelva, Alberto Garrocho, anunció que la conferencia inaugural correrá a cargo del economista José María O’Kean, que abordará los nuevos retos y las nuevas oportunidades del sector.

De la misma forma, agradeció a todos los patrocinadores, colaboradores y empresas asociadas, partners y participantes su implicación con este Congreso.

Por su parte, el presidente de la Fundación Caja Rural del Sur, José Luis García Palacios, se mostró “encantado” de estar en una edición más de este evento “tan especial”, al tiempo que el presidente de Caja Rural del Sur, José Luis García-Palacios Álvarez destacó que la entidad trabaja “codo con codo” para garantizar el futuro de un sector “fundamental para la economía de la provincia y que continuamente está innovando para crecer”.

Alemania, Argentina o Estados Unidos, entre otras zonas o países, con el objetivo siempre de plasmar todas las preocupaciones o temas de interés de los asociados de Freshuelva, sus inquietudes y las aspiraciones de futuro; todo por el desarrollo del sector de los frutos rojos de la provincia.

En esta ocasión, la investigación en nuevas variedades de todo un referente como es Estados Unidos será uno de los temas estrellas de este evento. Las posibilidades de nuevos mercados que se abren a los frutos rojos, como el chino o el de Oriente Medio, así como las tendencias de las grandes superficies europeas serán otros de los atractivos de las jornadas técnicas.

Presentation of the 4th Berry Fruit Congress Research into new berry varieties and the opportunities of new markets are the event’s central themes The International Berry Fruit Congress was presented on the 8th of June at the Casa Colón in Huelva, the same venue that will host the event on the 20th and 21st of June.

The chairman of Freshuelva, Alberto Garrocho, announced that the opening conference will be given by the economist, José María O’Kean, who will cover the new challenges and the new opportunities of the sector.

Likewise, he thanked all the sponsors, collaborators and associate companies, partners and participants for their involvement in this Congress.

Fruits de Ponent celebra sus 25 años

E

n un acto multitudinario, celebrado el pasado 18 de mayo en la Seu Vella de Lleida, Fruits de Ponent festejó su 25 aniversario. Además de los socios y directivos de la entidad, el evento contó con la asistencia del exsecretario general del Ministerio de Agricultura, Carlos Cabanas, el director de Industrias Agroalimentarias de la Generalitat, Càrmel Mòdol y el teniente de alcalde del Ayuntamiento de Lleida.

Entre los diferentes discursos, destacó especialmente el de su presidente, Sebastià Escarp, que apeló al cooperativismo como modelo de futuro y colaboración para hacer frente a la concentración de la distribución. Asimismo, tuvo un especial reconocimiento para sus socios, “que se dejan la piel los 365 días del año, y a menudo no ven recompensado su esfuerzo.”

At a mass event, held on the 18th of May at the Seu Vella in Lerida, Fruits de Ponent celebrated its 25th anniversary. In addition to partners and executives from the organisation, the event was also attended by the ex-secretary general for the Ministry of Agriculture, Carlos Cabanas; the manager of Agrifood Industries from La Generalitat, Càrmel Mòdol and the Deputy Mayor from the City Council of Lerida.

Amongst the different speeches, the one made by the organisation’s chairman, Sebastià Escarp, stood out as he called for cooperativism as the model for the future, along with collaboration to face up to the concentration of distribution.

Likewise, he gave a special acknowledgement to his partners, “who give their all, 365 days a year and often do not see their effort rewarded.”

Inversión continua en innovación

Fitó ha ampliado sus instalaciones de I+D en El Ejido (Almería)

E

l centro que posee la casa de semillas en Almería es un baluarte de su actividad investigadora que ha ido creciendo desde las 3 hectáreas iniciales en 1990 a las 12 de hoy, y además es la sede de la empresa que genera más volumen y facturación (1/5 parte de la facturación total). Con la última ampliación, de 1 Ha, se amplían las posibilidades de la firma, que ahora puede realizar a gran escala todo el proceso, desde el semillero (con 2.000 metros de superficie dividido en tres zonas), al seguimiento de resistencia a plagas en la zona de patología y el comportamiento de las variedades “supervivientes” en una última zona de invernadero. En cada una de estas áreas se han implementado herramientas y dispositivos tecnológicos para controlar y regular en todo momento las condiciones climáticas (pantallas térmicas, calefacción, cooling system ).

La zona neurálgica de las instalaciones es el almacén, donde se controlan la calefacción y fertirrigación (con cuatro tipos de abonado), y donde además se encuentran ubicadas las cámaras de terminación y siembra de semillas.

Para llevar a cabo la ampliación, Fitó ha realizado una inversión de 1,5 millones de euros.

Impulso a la expansión internacional Aunque el mercado nacional sigue creciendo y tiene un peso muy importante para la multinacional, en los últimos años la exportación está creciendo de forma importante y ya supone casi el 70% de su facturación. Por este motivo, no dejan de ampliar su presencia a lo largo y ancho del mundo: venden en 70 países a través de 8 filiales y presencia directa en otros 10 países. Además, este mismo año abrirán una nueva filial en Marruecos.

En cifras En esta campaña, la previsión de Fitó es alcanzar los 100 millones de euros de ventas globales, el 57% proviene de los hortícolas.

Buena parte de su facturación, el 20%, se destina a la investigación. De los más de 660 empleados que tienen en todo el mundo, el 38% se dedica a I+D.

Continuous investment in innovation Fitó has extended its R&D installations in El Ejido (Almeria)

The centre owned by the seed company in Almeria is a stronghold for its research activity that has been on the rise from the first 3 hectares in 1990 to today’s 12 hectares, and it is also the head offices of the company that is generating most volume and invoicing (1/5 part of the total invoicing). With this last 1 hectare extension, the company’s possibilities have been expanded and it now can carry out the entire process on a large scale, from the seedbeds (with 2,000 metres of surface area divided up into three areas), to the monitoring of resistance to pests in the pathology area and the behaviour of the ‘surviving’ varieties in a final area under grass.

In each of these areas tools and technological mechanisms have been implemented to control and regulate the weather conditions (thermal screens, heating, cooling system…) at all times.

The warehouse is the installation’s nerve centre, where the heating, watering and fertilisation (with four types of fertiliser) are controlled, and also where the termination and seed sowing rooms are located.

To carry out the extension, Fitó has made an investment of 1.5 million euros.

Boost for international expansion Although the national market continues to grow and is very important for the multinational, in recent years export has made a significant growth and now makes up virtually 70% of its invoicing. For this reason, they continue to extend their presence all over the world: they sell in 70 countries through subsidiaries, and have direct presence in another 10 countries. This year, they will also open a new subsidiary in Morocco.

Naranjas a China, a pesar del ‘cool treatment’ Hace nueve años que el dragón asiático abrió sus puertas a los cítricos españoles. A pesar de todo, las exportaciones hacia este país siguen siendo minoritarias

U

na treintena de firmas españolas ha logrado ‘infiltrarse’ en un mercado dominado por norteamericanos, egipcios, sudafricanos y australianos en esta categoría.

Para atender bien el mercado chino se necesita una persona en destino

“EuroFRESHPRODUCE”, pretende poner valor a la producción española citrícola gracias a sus altos estándares de calidad y seguridad alimentaria.

Dirigidos por Oliver Huesmann, consultor para Asia, nuestra publicación, Fruit Today euromagazine, así como un grupo de exportadores y profesionales del sector, pasó una semana recorriendo el comercio del país y algunos de sus mercados mayoristas.

Aunque el acuerdo bilateral entre España y China para exportación de cítricos se firmó en 2007, los envíos no comenzaron hasta 2014. En 2016 se llegó a las 10.134 toneladas con un valor de 11,3 millones de euros. En 2015 el volumen de negocio fue de 3,4 millones de euros y significó el triple de valor que en 2014, primer año de envío.

La iniciativa de este ejecutivo, denominada

“Aun así, a pesar de su potencial como cliente,

las ventas a China no despegan, en la medida de lo que potencialmente podrían suponer,” matiza el consultor.

“A España le falta hacer marca y promoción en el país y afrontar de manera conjunta un mercado de estas dimensiones, en el que nadie es competencia de nadie debido a las magnitudes de las que hablamos y al crecimiento económico que vive todo el país, estimado en 6% ó 7% entre 2018 y 2021,” recalca Huesmann.

España se sitúa como el quinto proveedor de naranjas a China, con una cuota del 5,4%, por detrás de Sudáfrica (33%), EEUU (31%), Australia (21%) y Egipto (9%). En mandarinas somos el cuarto proveedor con 2.138 toneladas en 2016, y una cuota del 6,8%.

El tratamiento de frío, en tela de juicio El principal escollo para la entrada de fruta española son las duras exigencias del protocolo respecto al tratamiento de frío (por la plaga de ceratitis capitata) que debe recibir la fruta.

Los requisitos establecidos son de 1,1º o menos durante 15 días consecutivos, 1,7º o menos, durante 17 días y 2,1º o menos durante 21 días.

Este proceso de enfriamiento se realiza durante el viaje y significa un serio inconveniente por la alta probabilidad de que el producto llegue con problemas de escaldado o pitting.

A pesar de ello, el ‘know how’ de empresas con una gran solera lo han desafiado y la fruta llega, en la mayoría de las ocasiones, en buenas condiciones (es posible ver marcas como Peica, Motilla o Bollo, entre otros).

Exportar a China es una tarea ardua, en la que además de destinar la mejor mercancía (que debería restarse de la destinada a Europa), necesita de una persona en destino, que supervise lo que sucede. Las firmas más aventajadas conocen esta necesidad 12 Fruittoday

y están inmersas en la creación de filiales u oficinas en el país. Es el caso de la valenciana, SanLucar, que en varios meses contará con una persona de la empresa de forma permanente, o el caso de Natural Hand, con presencia importante durante meses.

Las opiniones son diversas, así Vicente Luis Ramos, de la firma Albenfruit, cree que “China representa una oportunidad más pero no es la panacea, sobre todo en épocas en que los mercados europeos pagan bien el producto.

Otra cuestión es que Europa esté colapsada y sea interesante aligerar nuestro mercado natural, pero siempre hay que valorar un envío con tantos riesgos” Pros y contras del mercado chino

A todas luces, y según los datos recabados, el consumidor necesita una marca de referencia como es el caso de Sunkist. Si la firma ofrece la calidad y el dulzor que agrada, el precio pasa a segundo lugar.

Por los datos recabados in situ, a través de los diversos mercados e importadores con los que esta publicación tuvo contacto, la naranja española se encuentra en un posicionamiento medio, entre la líder Sunkist, y la egipcia, que compite en el segmento de precio, muy por debajo de la española.

Aunque China es un gran productor de cítricos, con casi 30 millones de toneladas, en su mayoría mandarinas (19.300 toneladas) y su cosecha coincide básicamente con el calendario español, Huesmann se pregunta: ¿Podemos permitirnos el lujo de no estar en China, un país que tiene 1.300 millones de habitantes y en 2030 será la primera economía mundial?

Claves para entender el mercado chino Las oportunidades de negocio en el gigante asiático se analizan bajo diferentes aspectos:

China La clase media china, a la que se incorporan 50 millones de personas cada año, está dispuesta a comprar comida importada ya que le proporciona un nivel de seguridad alimentaria mucho más alto que la producción local, salpicada de escándalos alimentarios.

Sólo un 10% de esta clase media confía en los alimentos producidos en el país.

La estructura salarial en toda China indica un fuerte crecimiento, lo que en pocos años supondrá que el 30% de la clase media mundial estará en este país, con la consecuente elevación de su poder adquisitivo.

El mercado chino está familiarizado con los productos de importación provenientes de la U.E, América, Australia o África.

Respecto a la producción agrícola en China hay que reseñar diversos aspectos: Entre un 60% y un 80% de las aguas subterráneas en China están contaminadas y el país sólo dispone del 6% de suministro de agua para un 20% de la población mundial.

Sólo el 10% de su territorio es apto para la agricultura, debido a la extensión de los desiertos y del Himalaya.

Esta situación explica que, en 2030, pase a importar el 60% de los alimentos que consume.

Otra de las oportunidades que genera el país es la inversión en producción (algunas empresas holandesas ya han empezado a hacerlo) y el traspaso de tecnología y saber hacer, aspecto para el que el gobierno chino ha presentado facilidades económicas.

Around thirty Spanish companies have managed to “infiltrate” a market dominated by Americans, Egyptians, South Africans and Australians in this category.

Led by Oliver Huesmann, a consultant for Asia, our journal, Fruit Today euromagazine, along with a group of exporters and professionals from the sector, spent a week travelling around the country’s trade areas and some of its wholesale markets.

The initiative for this project, called “EuroFRESHPRODUCE”, intends to give value to Spanish citrus fruit production thanks to its high quality and food safety standards.

Although the bilateral agreement between Spain and China to export citrus fruit was signed in 2007, shipments did not start until 2014. 10,134 tonnes of exports were reached in 2016, with a value of 11.3 million euros. In 2015, the business turnover was of 3.4 million euros and it tripled 2014’s value: the first year produce was sent.

“Even so, in spite of its potential as a customer, sales to China have not taken off as much as was expected,” the consultant qualifies.

“Spain needs to create a brand name and promote it in the country and deal with a market of this size as a group together, where nobody is a rival of anybody else due to the magnitudes we are talking about and the economic growth that the entire country is experiencing, estimated at 6% or 7% between 2018 and 2021,” Huesmann stresses.

Spain is the fifth supplier of oranges to China, with a market share of 5.4%, behind South Africa (33%), USA (31%), Australia (21%) and Egypt (9%). In mandarins, we are the fourth supplier with 2,138 tonnes in 2016 and a market share of 6.8%.

The cool treatment, being called into question The main stumbling block for the entry of Spanish fruit is the harsh protocol demands regarding cool treatment (for Mediterranean fruit fly) that the fruit must receive.

The established requirements are 1.1º or less for 15 days running; 1.7º or less for 17 days and 2.1º or less for 21 days.

This cooling process is carried out during the shipping and is a serious disadvantage as it is very likely that the produce will arrive with blanching or pitting problems.

In spite of this, the knowhow of companies with a long tradition have challenged this and the fruit mostly arrives in good conditions (it is possible to see brands such as Peica, Motilla or Bollo, amongst others).

Exporting to China is a difficult business, where in addition to sending the best goods (which must be taken from the produce to be sent to Europe), a person is needed at the destination to supervise the operations.

The most successful companies know about this need and are creating subsidiaries or branch offices in the country. This is the case of the Valencian company, SanLucar, which will have a permanent representative there in a few months’ time, or the case of Natural Hand, with significant presence over long periods.

Sunkist has the brand awareness that Chinese consumers demand and it also has the right amount of brix for the sweet-tooth of Oriental consumers (around 16 brix degrees). Oranges from Egypt usually have between 11 and 12 brix and they are used at times for juice. Spanish oranges, which could compete in price with the American ones, “do not have the same brix degrees as American oranges, only reaching between 13 and 14 degrees”, market sources from Shanghai told us.

by Sunkist. If the brand offers the quality and the sweetness that is appreciated, the price takes a back seat.

The Chinese market appreciates the Navels, the Valencias, and in June, it was receiving Chisletts.

Although China is an important citrus fruit producer, with almost 30 million tonnes, mainly mandarins (19,300 tonnes) and its harvest basically coincides with the Spanish calendar, Huesmann asks: Can we afford not to be present in China, a country with 1,300 million inhabitants and that will be the first economy in the world in 2030?

The high turnover of produce in a market of this size balances out the lack of cold storage rooms as used in Europe.

Chengdu This city is located in the central-south eastern area of the country, almost in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. It has around 15 million inhabitants and has become the fashionable capital for young people, and an important area of influence in this part of the country.

There are around 6,000 fruit and vegetable companies in its market and its volume exceeds 10,000 tonnes every day. The market makes up a city in itself, and it is equipped with the latest screen control technology, as well as a modern auction hall.

From its location, it serves an enormous proportion of medium-sized cities (in China, medium-sized means 5 million inhabitants); therefore, the road logistics are vitally important. However, although there are extensive, modern road networks starting from Chengdu, the use of refrigerated transport causes problems due to the lack of professionalism of the refrigerator companies themselves, which mean that second and third category cities are not supplied with fruit showing sufficient quality.

Shanghai In the Eastern area of the country, Shanghai makes up the second most important market for imported fruit. Northern importers prefer Shanghai to Guangzhou due to the lower transport costs for the inland markets. The transport price for a 40-foot container from Guangzhou to Beijing can reach 2,280 dollars compared to the 1,400 dollars it costs from Shanghai to Beijing.

The repeated surplus offer from previous years has caught up with the sector and particularly the situation that occurred in the previous campaign, where it started and ended with prices at source that were almost half what was estimated as the production cost, around 33 cents per kilo. This year, due to the adjustment of the supply and demand (caused by the weather excesses and to a lesser extent due to the grubbing of fruit trees that took place in some communities), things seem to have calmed down a little.

Prices, although not really high, are responding to more reasonable expectations. “They are not unusually high, but they are behaving as they should do in a normal campaign,” states Joaquin Gómez, a representative from Apoexpa.

This reduction in the harvest was not expected to be as important, but the bad weather conditions have repeatedly wreaked havoc in virtually all the Spanish producing regions, to which a drop in production in Europe has also been added. The bad weather conditions in the spring have decreased the potential for peaches and nectarines by 16% with respect to the previous campaign and they are almost 21% below average.

Apricots will drop by 18% throughout Europe, but they remain stable in Spain with around 142,709 tonnes.

The sector’s situation in Spain is similar to the one in Italy, although with a less consolidated drop. The production decrease is around 11% and France will also record a 10% drop. Only Greece is showing a 19% increase compared to 2017 and an average of over 32% compared to 2012-2016.

The Catalonian case In peach and nectarine varieties, Catalonia will see an overall drop of 17%, with 471,430 tonnes. Round peaches are decreasing by 13% and their volume will reach 114,250 tonnes, flat peaches will drop by 18%, with a production of 127,560 tonnes, nectarines decrease by 19%, with a figure of 207,310. Finally, flat nectarines are dropping by 12%, with around 22,310 tonnes.

Flowering has been scarce, irregular and long, followed by a low setting. The future production will also be decreased by the frosts in February and March and the hail in the months of April and May, as well as the heavy rainfall in June.

esús Hernández, gerente de Frumaex, recuerda que productos como la ciruela o el melocotón contienen “100% fruta, son naturales y sin aditivos”. ¿Qué hacer, entonces, para mantenerse a flote cuando además existe una tendencia mundial de consumo a la baja? La solución ideal sería la “autorregulación” del sector, pero ante la dificultad que entraña, Hernández aboga por una vía más rápida, la de “no dejar de innovar”, principalmente con presentaciones que llamen la atención del cliente. Color y calibre, sin olvidar el sabor, son las claves para ello.

Los genetistas desarrollan cada vez mejores variedades que dan en la diana de lo que se busca, y en Frumaex seleccionan las mejores para dirigirse a mercados alternativos.

“Somos exportadores, principalmente nos dirigimos a ultramar con la ciruela”. Esa estrategia conlleva el lógico riesgo derivado de largos trayectos para productos perecederos como la fruta. Tardamos casi 30 días en llegar a los destinos más lejanos”. Entre ellos India, Malasia y Singapur.

We take almost 30 days to reach the most distant destinations.” Amongst these are India, Malaysia and Singapore.

This year, the company expects to produce between 6 and 7 million kilos on a surface area of 300 hectares. 80% corresponds to plums, a segment in which they are specialists. Their campaign started at the beginning of May with the first early apricots, continuing with peaches and nectarines and will extend until mid-October with plums.

La extremeña Nogalfruits ha sumado caqui, kiwi y granada a su gama de fruta para destinos de ultramar

ogalfruits, empresa privada centrada en la comercialización y varias fincas de producción propia, empezaró la campaña con nectarina, melocotón y paraguayo, y ya a partir de la primera semana de junio pasó a trabajar la ciruela, un producto con el que llegan hasta el 20 de septiembre con la tardía Angeleno. Las propias características de esta variedad, unidas al tratamiento Smart fresh, permiten mantenerla en cámara sin que la fruta se deshidrate, llegando en perfectas condiciones a los destinos a los que se dirige la empresa, prácticamente todos de ultramar. La elección de centrarse en los mercados más lejanos fue clave desde sus inicios en 2007, explica el ge-

rente, Justo Redondo. “La tarta europea estaba repartida, no quisimos entrar ahí”. Brasil, Emiratos Árabes, Colombia... constituyen el grueso de destinos a los que llegan. El año pasado finalizaron los protocolos que les abren la puerta a Canadá y China, y actualmente están certificando fincas y tramitando todo lo necesario para operar en Sudáfrica.

a firma de Elne ha seleccionado una nueva generación de platerinas con un alto potencial gustativo y una atractiva presentación que le permitirá ofrecer una gama completa e innovadora en esta categoría.

Más de tres décadas de investigación en todas las categorías de fruta de hueso avalan el saber hacer de la compañía que sostiene, como pocas, una distinción identificable por el consumidor final, el Concepto REGAL’IN™.

REGAL’IN™, una referencia inquebrantable de fruta con sabor, ofrece al consumidor una compra satisfactoria y saludable, así como diferentes líneas en varias especies.

La directiva de la compañía, Laurance Maillard, matiza que “el grupo no está cerrado y nos gustaría contar con la incorporación de nuevos socios fuera de Francia, siempre y cuando la producción se pueda adaptar a las necesidades del mercado.”

Las futuras empresas deberán compartir la filosofía del grupo, basada en la valoración de toda la cadena, desde la producción hasta el consumidor final, todo ello bajo una esmerada calidad y sabor.

“Las tendencias actuales de consumo que buscan productos gustativos y fáciles de comer (su forma plana es un plus) auguran muy buenas perspectivas de crecimiento y nuestra apuesta pasa por presentar en los próximos años, otra gama plana de carne roja,” explica Maillard.

El sabor de las nuevas platerinas, rojas por fuera y de carne blanca, es de un equilibrio perfecto entre azúcares, acidez y aromas.

Su disponibilidad abarca desde junio a septiembre.

Future companies must share the group’s philosophy, based on the valuation of the entire chain, from production to the end consumer, giving priority to great quality and flavour.

“The current consumer trends that are looking for tasty products that are easy to eat (its flat shape is a bonus) guarantee very good growth prospects and our commitment lies in presenting another red-fleshed flat range over the next few years,” Maillard explains.

The flavour of the new flat nectarines, red on the outside and with white flesh, is a perfect balance of sugars, acidity and aromas. They are available from June to September.

Yes, in fact in 2017 apricots suffered from a very significant crisis. It seems that the race towards renewal has reached its end and we have started to anticipate this change. Our innovation and development strategy has been directed towards other fruits: apples, pears and American-Japanese plums.

What is the basic priority for the new plant varieties?

This year we are emphasising the development of apples, particularly two that are resistant to bitter pit: ANISE®, a yellow, Golden type, which ripens at the beginning of August and PIXIE®, a ‘washed’ red, with 80-100% colouring, which ripens at the end of August and has very good taste. Amongst them, the Gala Schnicored (covShniga®) which is a reference in Europe and the Golden Parsi (cov Da Rosa®) or the American red, Red Delicious Roat (cov in progress) stand out.

However, we are not abandoning stone fruit and this year we are proposing three new apricot varieties; in particular an ultra-early, self-fertilising variety, with good size and good taste quality. In plums, we are working with the important

European producers in American-Japanese plums. The plantations are being designed with varieties that have been tested in France and Spain and for which we expect an important development over the next three campaigns.

Does the limitation of plant-protection products in Europe mark the progress of a company like yours, since producers are looking for varieties that need to be treated as little as possible?

Yes, this trend has become very obvious on the market and it will continue to rise. It is the reason we have been working in this area since 2000 (particularly with the Juliet apple), proposing varieties that are resistant to disease in a natural way.

Where are the company’s new challenges going?

Our working method consists of providing technical accompaniment for all our varieties. We maintain our own experimental fields and we prepare real technical itineraries.

In this way, we can advise and minimise any production errors and reach the optimum agronomical potential for the variety. The productivity and calibre criteria are essential requirements, but the focal point of any of our varieties is the flavour.

Our business philosophy is completely integrated and we carry out the five steps in the chain: breeder, editor, nursery worker, producer and marketer, which allow us to provide technical help in a sector where cost reduction is essential and the choice of the correct variety is paramount.

Bouquet: European leaders with Spanish watermelons For the past 26 years, the Bouquet watermelon has spearheaded its category on the European market, with presence on the supermarket shelves in 30 countries.

Anecoop plans to market 150,000 tonnes of watermelon during this campaign, of which 80% will correspond to the seedless watermelon Bouquet. In 2017, 132,000 tonnes were reached, 77% of which were seedless.

100% of these watermelons are produced in Spain by farmers with a high level of specialisation.

Thanks to its unique global programme, Anecoop has extended its campaign from April until the end of August.

The brand name Bouquet represents 18% of watermelons produced in Spain, and 15% of those exported.

In the words of Anecoop’s chairman, Alejandro Monzón, “this crop has an important social value for the continuance of the farming activity all year long. It is true case of support for Spanish quality agriculture.”

Regarding the future, Joan Mir, the General Manager, believes that “the challenge is to distinguish ourselves from productions in other countries as we offer greater freshness and less impact on the carbon footprint.”

From its two experimental fields in Almeria and Valencia, in both greenhouse and open air crops, the company continues working on its production processes and on new cultivation methods. In this evolution, the trend towards smaller sizes and segmentation by qualities and colours stands out.

At present, the seedless watermelon family Bouquet is made up of four types of watermelon: the red and the yellow-fleshed watermelons with striped skin, the black-skinned one and the mini watermelon, all of which are also available as a bio crop.

Getting closer to consumers The cooperative will tackle an intense communication campaign with an investment of over € 900,000 covering Spain, France, the Czech Republic, Belarus and Poland. El Monarca vuelve a lanzar su campaña Melón Solidario a nivel nacional y comienza la primera de Sandía Solidaria

CSR in its DNA El Monarca is once again launching its national Solidary Melon campaign and is starting up the first Solidary Watermelon campaign Frutas y Verduras El Monarca is strengthening its social commitment with the second edition of the ‘Solidary Melon’ campaign, collaborating with El Corte Inglés.

Last campaign’s experience was very positive, and they managed to collect € 5,000 for the Ressido project, by the Fundación Assido in Murcia (federated to DOWN España) through the sale of its melons. This year, they will also market Solidary Watermelons.

In the winter campaign they repeated the initiative with another of its products, the artichoke, through the ‘Solidary Artichoke’ campaign, also on sale in the stores belonging to the El Corte Inglés Group (Supermarket, Hipercor and Supercor). In this case, the donations went to the ‘Primera noticia’ project from the Spanish Down Association, aimed at supporting new parents of children with Down Syndrome in different hospitals around Spain, and to which the donations made from the Solidary Watermelon campaign will also go.

The Corporate Social Responsibility forms part of the DNA of the company from Murcia. The Communications Manager, Leny Sánchez, told Fruit Today that, along with the above-mentioned projects, they continue to support organisations such as Flamenco Rosa, the first Dragon Boat team (a rowing modality that is practised to a drum beat in a dragon-shaped vessel) of women who have survived breast cancer.

“We are their main sponsors.” All of these initiatives can be seen on the web site www.elmonarca.es, recently renewed to make it more accessible. “We have added Arabic to the languages we already had on the site – Spanish, English and German, and an Employment tab has also been incorporated.”

In 2018 El Monarca expected to maintain the same melon production volumes as last year, with 13 million kilos of piel de sapo and 4 of yellow on a surface area of 500 hectares.

Piel de sapo para Almería Ramiro Arnedo ha duplicado la superficie de Mirambel F1 y Valentín F1 en su primer año comercial

n 2017 Ramiro Arnedo presentó sus primeras variedades de melón piel de sapo para invernadero, y éste ha sido el año de su despegue, pasando de las 100 ha de los ensayos precomerciales a duplicar la superficie, ya a nivel comercial. Se trata de Valentín F1 y Mirambel F1, ambas con planta vigorosa, buena facilidad para el cuajado y buen escriturado, una condición muy importante en la categoría de piel de sapo. A nivel agronómico “se comportan bien en campo, tienen aguante y no presentan problemas de rajado. Además cuentan con resistencia a oídio”, explica Jorge Bervel, técnico comercial de la empresa. Los frutos tienen una buena apariencia interna, “no se quedan verdes y tornan a dorado cuando alcanzan los grados Brix ideales para el corte”. Internamente, ofrecen una textura suave y con un punto de tersura, sin dejar de ser jugosos. ¿Qué diferencia a estos materiales?

Por un lado, las fechas de trasplante, que permiten jugar con el ciclo comercial de Almería. Valentín F1 es la variedad más temprana, se pone desde mediados de enero a primeros de marzo, y Mirambel F1 desde finales de febrero hasta el 10 de abril. La otra

diferencia radica en el calibre: oscilan entre 2,5 kg y 3,5, siendo los de Valentín algo mayores.

Muy reconocida por sus variedades de pimiento, la firma ofrece una amplia gama de productos que van desde la alcachofa a la zanahoria, pasando por la calabaza o la cebolla, entre otros.

Buena parte de su facturación, más del 20% del total, se destina a investigación. “Una vez cubiertas las necesidades alimentarias, el consumidor quiere divertirse con la comida. Y para ello investigamos diferentes sabores, colores, texturas”, detalla Henry Smienk, responsable de Marketing. De forma paralela, tratan de dar soluciones a productores y distribución. “En melón, por ejemplo, estamos trabajando con materiales resistentes a Nueva Delhi, aunque de momento estamos viendo cómo funciona esta resistencia en campo”.

What is the difference between these materials? On the one hand, the transplanting dates, which allow Almeria’s commercial cycle to be juggled. Valentín F1 is the earliest variety; it is planted from mid-January to the beginning of March and Mirambel F1 which is transplanted from the end of February to the 10th of April. The other difference lies in the sizes: they range between 2.5 and 3.5 kg, with Valentín being slightly larger.

Well-renowned for their pepper varieties, the company offers a wide selection of produce, ranging from artichokes to carrots, passing through pumpkins or onions, amongst others.

A large part of its invoicing (over 20% of the total) is used for research. “Once the dietary needs have been covered, consumers want to have fun with food. And therefore, we are researching different flavours, colours and textures,” says Henry Smienk, Marketing Manager. At the same time, they are attempting to find solutions for producers and for the distribution. “In melons, for example, we are working with materials that are resistant to New Delhi, although at present we are still seeing how this resistance works in the fields.”

Sólo se va a comercializar a través de dos partners, la empresa murciana Jimbofresh, que comercializará Waikiki en exclusiva en gran parte de Europa, y la portuguesa Hortomelao, que hará lo propio en el país luso.

Los melones bajo la marca Waikiki saldrán en unos meses de los invernaderos de Almería y, posteriormente, de Murcia, La Mancha, Brasil y, al inicio del próximo año, Senegal.

En la categoría principal, Piel de Sapo, la nueva generación destaca por la rapidez en alcanzar el nivel óptimo de Brix (una semana antes del momento del corte), unido a una alta postcosecha. En la nueva línea de Galia destaca también 34-211 RZ, un larga vida con una rápida subida de azúcar. Y para invernadero está 34-216 RZ, con planta equilibrada, facilidad de cuaje y elevado nivel de Brix en condiciones de calor, garantizando melones dulces al inicio de temporada.

Aromático, con aguante en planta y carne más firme que otras variedades tradicionales al madurar, ofreciendo al consumidor la textura tradicional de esta tipología. En Charentais, junto a Signol, Barriol y Frivol Rijk Zwaan presenta 34-504 RZ, para trasplantes de marzo al 10 de abril en Cartagena y temprano en La Mancha. Dos semanas después de la cosecha sigue presentando una muy buena larga vida, además de buen nivel brix y aspecto limpio con bandas bien marcadas. Su calibre está entre Signol y Barriol, y es resistente a oídio raza 3,5 y pulgón.

Nuevas sandías Rijkz Zwaan completa la gama de polinizadores con microsemilla con tres variedades que aportan diferenciación en color de piel y el calibre que demanda el mercado. Gatinho RZ (complemento ideal para Tigrinho RZ), de piel rayada y calibre pequeño para plantaciones tardías, tanto en invernadero como al aire libre. 62-182 RZ, la pareja de Conguita RZ, de piel negra y maduración precoz, con calibre 4 kg, para invernadero y plantaciones tempranas al aire libre. Por último, la tipo Crimson 62-430 RZ alcanza los 3-4kg y tiene un color rojo intenso.

The seed company, Rijk Zwaan is renewing its portfolio with materials that guarantee consumer satisfaction and bring many advantages with them for both farmers and the distribution channels, as may be seen at the Global Melon & Watermelon Event on the 4th and 5th of July in Murcia, and in the ‘Supply Excellence & Innovation’ conferences, with the Cajamar Innovation Manager, Roberto García, and the Fruit Manager at Consum, Miguel Ángel Bolaños. In the main category, Piel de Sapo, the new generation stands out due to its speed in reaching the optimum Brix level (a week before cutting), along with an excellent post-harvest. In this segment, three varieties are included that cover the entire cycle: 34-106 RZ, for Almeria and early planting in Murcia and La Mancha and late planting in La Mancha, with resistance to powdery mildew and aphids; Flecha Verde RZ, for middle cycle in Murcia and plantations from the 20th of May to the 20th of June in La Mancha, the intense flavour and fast increase in the sugars, which turn it into a premium product; and Galactus RZ (34145), with resistance to powdery mildew and aphids and greater flexibility in the plantation window than Flecha Verde RZ. The great innovation in Galia is 34-218 RZ, an ‘extended life’ variety that changes from green to yellow when it becomes ripe, indicating cutting time. It has over 15º Brix and has a strong flavour.

In the new Galia line 34-211 RZ also stands out, a long life fruit with a fast rise in sugar. And for greenhouse fruit, there is 34-216 RZ, with a balanced plant, ease of setting and a high Brix level in hot conditions, guaranteeing sweet melons at the beginning of the season.

Aromatic, with good resistance on the plant and a firmer flesh than other traditional varieties when ripe, offering consumers the traditional texture of this typology. Once again we are talking about Belharra RZ, designed for transplanting from mid-January to mid-February in the Campo de Cartagena, and with the bonus of its resistance to aphids.

In Charentais, along with Signol, Barriol and Frivol, Rijk Zwaan is presenting 34-504 RZ, for transplanting from March to the 10th of April in Cartagena and early periods in La Mancha. Two weeks after the harvest, it continues to show a very good long shelf life, as well as good brix level and a clean appearance with marked bands. Its size is in between Signol and Barriol, and it is resistant to powdery mildew race 3.5 and aphids.

New watermelons Rijk Zwaan is completing the range of micro-seed pollinators with three varieties that have a differentiation in skin colour and the size that the market demands. Gatinho RZ (an ideal complement for Tigrinho RZ), with striped skin and a small size for late plantations, both under glass and in the open air. 62-182 RZ, the partner of Conguita RZ, with black skin and early ripening, with a 4 kg calibre, for greenhouse and early open air plantations. Finally, the Crimson type 62-430 RZ reaches 3-4 kgs, with a deep red colour.

Belharra

In triploids, there is Lawrence RZ for greenhouse cultivation, very early, with striped skin on a dark green background and weighing 5 to 6 kg, with very deep red flesh. Kidman RZ (late under glass) complements the above fruit and a new variety for open air cultivation, striped on a light green background, 6-7 kg, a high sugar level and good post-harvest and good behaviour when handling due to the resistance of its peel. Finally, Amaltea RZ is an intense black-skinned variety, with an eye-catching contrast due to the deep red colour of its flesh. Early ripening, it ranges between 5-7 kg and is perfect for both greenhouse and open air plantations.

In conventional calibres, Seminis has another two new developments, SVMP8001 and SVMP8486. The first is for the mid segment in Murcia (transplanting in April) and the second is focused on the early cycle in Castilla-La Mancha.

For the producers of Charentais, they have a new development, currently in its first year on the market in France and in the pre-sales phase in Spain: Funchal.

Recommended for the early-middle segment in Murcia (15th of February to the 15th of March), it stands out for its production and the healthiness of the plant, due to the resistance to fusarium, amongst other aspects.

Turning our attention to another line, the Galia melon Cyroline continues to be successful. “All the varieties are early, highly productive, they have a very good flavour and they are easy to cut. Additionally, the new ones include more resistances,” Guirado explains. For the early segment in Murcia, the reference is Verdasco and for the middle-late cycle in Cartagena and La Mancha, there is the SV5133MG.

The new Sakata melon varieties complement, without replacing, the companies’ references in La Mancha: Don Quixote (for plantations from the 15th to the 25th of April); Cordial (from the 10th of May to the 20th of June) and Grand Riado (from the 20th of June onwards).

“Es unipersonal, y se está posicionando en el segmento eco y monocultivo precisamente por su reducido calibre”. Ideal tanto para invernadero como tunelillo, su planta se adapta a marcos de plantación más densos (habituales en la producción ecológica) y facilita la aplicación de tratamientos autorizados para el control de plagas. El fruto, homogéneo y muy atractivo gracias a unas vetas bien definidas, tiene una excelente calidad interna: carne de color rojo intenso, sabrosa, muy crujiente y con un elevado nivel de Brix.

Ideal both under glass and in polytunnels, its plant adapts to denser plantation frameworks (normal in ecological production) and it facilitates the application of authorised treatments for pest control. The fruit, homogeneous and very attractive thanks to its welldefined stripes, has excellent internal quality: deep red flesh, tasty, very crunchy and with a high level of Brix.

Another of the launches is NUN 11501 WMW F1, a pollinator for early cycles (transplanting from December and January) “larger than Premium, but with identical internal quality”, consequently, it would be framed in the ‘midi’ sized fruits. In this case, the good opening of its flowers is worth mentioning, which encourages a greater pollinating capacity and its synchronisation with the triploid varieties. Also, according to Mercedes Fernández, a Watermelon Specialist, “it has a high pollen quality in early cycles, in spite of the great difference in temperature between daytime and night-time during the flowering dates”.

In the triploid segment, Nunhems® presented NUN 31226 WMW F1, launched commercially this year. Its size (between 4 and 6 kg) is slightly smaller than other conventional watermelons, therefore it is particularly good for export.

andía Fashion empezó el pasado mes de mayo la temporada nacional en un año que Víctor González, responsable de marketing, define como “de transición”. “Hemos incluido un nuevo hito en nuestra estrategia empresarial, queremos pasar de ser una marca de sandía, a una marca de salud”. No se trata de una nueva idea, sino de una realidad que se viene gestando desde hace varios años con el desarrollo de estudios en colaboración con la Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena y la colaboración con la Fundación Española del Corazón en el marco del Programa de Alimentación y Salud (PASFEC), así como la promoción de los buenos hábitos con degustaciones en centros educativos.

Para este 2018, la producción prevista de Fashion pretende superar los 80 millones de kilos, (2-3% más que el año pasado). Las primeras sandías Fashion procedentes de Senegal llegaron a los lineales a mediados de febrero; le siguieron las de Almería en mayo, con dos semanas de retraso respecto a 2017; y a mediados de junio se han empezado a recolectar las de aire libre en el Levante de Almería, Sevilla y Murcia, continuando con las de todo el litoral Mediterráneo, hasta culminar en La Mancha en octubre.

In line with this philosophy, Fashion has launched an important awareness campaign on traditional mass media and on the distribution channel. In the first place, an important investment has been made in television to continue positioning the brand as the reference watermelon. For two weeks, the week has sponsored the Sports section of Telecinco’s News programme presented by Pedro Piqueras, with a 17% of daily audience share and an average of 2 million viewers. Subsequently, it has launched its new advertisement, followed by its sponsoring of Antena 3’s Sports Section during the weekend of the Champions League final.

At the same time, the distribution chain, wholesalers and retailers have received their “Kits for fruit sellers”, with stickers for floors and windows, and pendants, to be used to transmit the new brand strategy over the next few years.

For 2018, the planned Fashion production intends to exceed 80 million kilos (2-3% higher than last year). The first Fashion watermelons from Senegal arrived on the supermarket shelves in the middle of February; they were followed by fruit from Almeria in May, two weeks’ later than in 2017; and in mid-June the open air harvest in Eastern Almeria, Seville and Murcia was started, continuing with the harvest from the entire Mediterranean coast, until concluding in La Mancha in October.

Un material para cada necesidad Intersemillas prepara una nueva batería de melones y sandías para el próximo otoño

l año pasado, durante la celebración de Fruit Attraction, Intersemillas presentó oficialmente el melón Sorolla, un piel de sapo innovador por su carne naranja que despertó un gran interés por su indudable atractivo y peculiaridades organolépticas que aúnan frescura, aroma, sabor y puesta en boca. Pero no se quedan ahí, durante el próximo otoño desembarcarán con una batería de melones tradicionales piel de sapo. Claudio Vidal, director de I+D, explica a Fruit Today que esta nueva línea sigue la misma filosofía que la de sus sandías. “Nuestro objetivo es cubrir la gran mayoría de necesidades de nuestros productores y, por supuesto, de los comercializadores. Así pues, presentaremos variedades de fruto pequeño con muy buen transporte destinadas a la exportación, otras con larga duración para las producciones invernales de ultramar, también algunas con las que responder a los fuertes calores manchegos, y otras con frutos alargados y también

Sorolla destaca por carne naranja y sabor

El catálogo de sandía de Intersemillas consta de 14 variedades comerciales. Su oferta “es un gran alivio para los agricultores, técnicos y comerciales que tienen que planificar sus programas para satisfacer la demanda del consumidor final”, asegura Vidal. Las variedades de calibres medianos y pequeños han sido su punto fuerte desde siempre.

Ejemplo de ellos son diploides como Miniazabache y Mini, o triploides como Caramelo, Divina y recientemente Cálida. Hace unos años lanzaron Mini Micro, una microsemilla de forma perfectamente redonda y tamaño muy pequeño que, unido a una extraordinaria producción también en cultivos muy precoces de Almería, le auguran un “futuro espectacular”. Como también lo tendrá la nueva serie, en fase precomercial en este momento, de sandías triploides de 1 kg muy resistentes al transporte.

Intersemillas’ watermelon catalogue is made up of 14 commercial varieties. Its offer “is a significant relief for the farmers, technicians and salesmen who have to plan their programmes to meet the demands of the end consumers,” Vidal states. The medium and small-sized varieties have always been the company’s strong point. Examples of this are the diploids such as Miniazabache and Mini, or triploids such as Caramelo, Divina and recently, Cálida. A few years’ ago they launched Mini Micro, a perfectly round micro-seed, with a very small size which, together with an extraordinary production, also for very early crops in Almeria, promised a “spectacular future.” A future the new series will have, which is in a pre-commercial phase at

present, of 1 kg triploid watermelons that have very good transport capacity.

Hay que recordar que Carrefour se gastó en 2014 cerca de 650 millones de euros para comprar los 273 supermercados de Grupo Dia. En 2017 estas tiendas provocaron pérdidas estimadas en 180 millones de euros.

Los cierres vienen acompañados de despidos: entre 1.000 y 2.000 trabajadores.

Inglaterra, Tesco Direct cierra. Tesco Direct es la tienda online que abrió Tesco en 2006.

El principal motivo para cerrarla es que no consiguen ganar dinero con ella, y van a trasladar estos productos a su tienda online de gran consumo, Tesco.com. De esta forma pueden liberar recursos económicos que van a invertir en la tienda online.

Se ha apostado sólo por productos a granel o envueltos en papel, cartón u otras alternativas con certificación ecológica.

Ekoplaza cuenta con 74 establecimientos en Holanda, y ésta es la primera experiencia sin plástico. Este nuevo concepto se extenderá también a La Haya en verano y, posiblemente a todos los establecimientos de la compañía, o al menos, se pretende la existencia de un pasillo sin productos en plásticos.

Corazón multiformato Induser desarrolla una nueva versión de su pesadora asociativa, ideal para berries, pimiento y fruta hueso

Llevan stand propio al IV Congreso de Frutos Rojos de peso, Onubafruit. El trabajo, que combina la tecnología de clasificación de Unitec con la de envasado de Induser, ha consistido en la instalación de maquinaria con múltiples líneas multiformato y una capacidad de llenado de hasta 30.000 unidades/hora (en tarrinas, bandejas clamshell, vasos…) para arándano.

n el último año Induser ha vuelto a experimentar un salto en materia de innovación, con nuevos desarrollos a cargo de su departamento técnico. Han puesto en marcha un proyecto piloto de la nueva versión de su pesadora asociativa, esta vez en lineal; una envasadora de bolsas zipper; y un software que permite clasificar productos en bicolor y tricolor, detectando diferencias en porcentaje de color. Además, con vistas

a la que creen que será la próxima tendencia, se encuentran en pleno desarrollo de una solución de envasado de tarrinas con film termosellado. Todo ello sin descuidar la mejora continua de sus modelos, cuyo “corazón” es el servotransportador multiformato.

Multi-format heart Induser is developing a new version of its associative weighing machine, ideal for berries, peppers and stone fruit Over the past year, Induser has once again experienced a leap forward in innovation, with new developments by its technical department. They have started up a pilot project for the new version of the company’s associative weighing machine, which will be linear this time; a packaging machine using zipper bags; and software that allows produce to be classified in two and three colours, detecting differences in colour percentages. In addition, looking towards what they believe will be the next trend, they are immersed in the development of a packaging solution for tubs with heat-sealing film. All of this, without neglecting the continuous improvement of the company’s models, the ‘heart’ of which is the multi-format servo-transporter.

This campaign, they have undertaken an ambitious project in one of the areas where they are seeing most growth, Huelva, for a very important customer, Onubafruit. The job, which combines Unitec sorting technology with Induser’s packaging, has consisted of the installation of machinery with multiple multi-format lines and a filling capacity of up to 30,000 units/hour (in tubs, clamshell trays, cups…) for blueberries.

They are also expanding in Mexico, a market where “the different packaging options play an important role” for six coloured cherry tomatoes, spicy tomatoes…

ras fuertes inversiones y esfuerzo, la compañía pone en marcha una nueva línea para abandonar definitivamente la producción de envases provenientes de plástico virgen.

A partir de ahora, todos sus envases procederán de materiales ya usados. Su abastecimiento provendrá, al menos en un 95% de botellas de plástico y el 5% restante de otros productos PET. Es decir, tanto para Italia como para España, las nuevas líneas de producción de envases serán 100% de R-PET.

El camino de la empresa hacia el R-PET ha supuesto más de una década de trabajo. Ya en 2010, solicitó autorización de la EFSA para el proyecto, tras obtenerla compró la tecnología “Starlinger Supercleaning Tecnologies” para procesar las escamas del R-PET. Tres años después, en 2013, la EFSA aprueba y certifica a Infia con el “supercleaning process”. En 2016, la firma completa la implementación de sus proveedores y en 2017 aplica el proceso aprobado por la EFSA a toda su producción de Italia y España. Finalmente, en 2018, coincidiendo con la publicación por parte de la Comisión Europea de la “Estrategia Europea de Plásticos en Economía Circular”, la compañía lanza el 100% de sus productos PET en R-PET.

Infia is joining the new era of recycling The end for non-recycled plastic at Infia which, from now on, is exclusively committed to R-PET After some significant investments and a great effort, the company has started up a new line in order to leave behind container production using virgin plastic for good.

Helping the world by sustainable packaging

From now on, all its containers will be made using pre-used materials. At least 95% of its supply will come from plastic bottles and the remaining 5% from other PET products. That is to say, for both Italy and Spain, the new container production lines will use 100% R-PET. This recycled plastic is purified and cleaned using approved processes, certified by the EFSA (European Food Safety Association).

Additionally, the entire process is based on the European Directive 2008/98/EC on waste, which establishes some basic management principles for its handling that do not endanger human health or the environment.

Three years later, in 2013, the EFSA approved and certified Infia with the “supercleaningprocess.” In 2016, the company completed the implementation of its suppliers and in 2017, it applied the process approved by the EFSA to its entire production in Italy and Spain. Finally, in 2018, coinciding with the publication by the European Commission of the “European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy,” the company launched 100% of its PET products in R-PET. “The truth is that it is not a new matter, since some markets, such as the British one, have always been very sensitive about this subject, and supermarkets in the country such as Tesco, Sainsbury´s, Asda, Morrisons, M&S, Waitrose, etc. having been demanding that 80% of their products come in recycled R-PET,; but now this demand has reached 100% of their service and we, without any doubt, are in favour of this circular economy that benefits society as a whole,” explains Fabio Zoboli, general manager for Europe.

La estrategia de marca debe ser global, ser coherente en todos los puntos de contacto (distribuidor, consumidor, online, tienda…) y estar alineada con la visión de la compañía.

¿Qué tanto representa el sector hortofrutícola dentro de la compañía?

Para Brandsummit la alimentación representa el 100% de nuestra actividad y el 20% pertenece al sector hortofrutícola. Hemos trabajado con diferentes marcas de frutas, acompañando proyectos como el lanzamiento de una nueva gama al mercado, todo un replanteamiento del posicionamiento de marca o el diseño estratégico de packaging. ¿Hacia dónde camina el futuro del marketing en un sector donde falta tanto por hacer?

Al marketing en el sector hortofrutícola todavía le queda recorrido, mucho. Lo principal que deben tener en cuenta las marcas es que una buena materia prima es parte del éxito. El siguiente paso es saber venderlo, y es aquí donde entra el marketing. Somos conscientes de lo difícil que es hacer marca para el consumidor final, gran olvidado o poco trabajado en muchas ocasiones. ¿El futuro del marketing pasa por el marketing online?

El marketing engloba muchas áreas. No porque la parte online sea la que más fuerza está adquiriendo, quiere decir que sea la única. Sí es cierto que en el marketing los datos predominan y en su parte online son muy medibles, es decir, se puede supervisar desde cero toda una campa54 Fruittoday

Para llegar a tener una marca reconocida, ¿cuáles son las acciones necesarias a realizar? ¿qué es lo que nunca se debe hacer?

Nunca se puede dejar de comunicar. Lo que no se dice no existe y no se puede esperar que una marca sea reconocida si ella misma no se da a conocer. Es muy importante que esa comunicación no sea un ejercicio aislado o improvisado.

Debe ser un elemento articulado, que se mueva en conjunto con la estrategia de la marca.

No hay unas acciones estándares, cada marca responde a un público y tiene su diferenciación, a través del análisis y la toma de decisiones se llega a un equilibrio empresa-marca-consumidor.

For Brandsummit, food represents 100% of our activity and 20% of this belongs to the fruit and vegetable sector. We have worked with different brands of fruit, accompanying projects such as the launch of a new range on the market, a complete redesign of the brand positioning or the strategic designing of packaging.

Where is the future of marketing headed in a sector with so much to do?

Marketing in the fruit and vegetable sector still has a long way to go. The main point that the brands must take into account is the fact that good raw material is part of the success story. The next step is knowing how to sell it, and this is where marketing comes in. We are aware of how difficult it is to create a brand for the end consumer, which has been completely forgotten or had little effort paid to it on many occasions.

Does the future of marketing mean online marketing?

Marketing encompasses many areas.

Just because online marketing is taking off, doesn’t mean that it is the only type.

It is true that in marketing data is the predominant part and in its online area this data is easy to measure, that is to say, a campaign can be supervised from the very start. The brand strategy must be global, coherent at all the points of contact (distributor, consumer, online, store…), and it must be in line with the company’s viewpoint.

In order to achieve a recognised brand, what actions must be carried out? What should never be done?

You should never stop communicating.

Whatever is not said, does not exist and you cannot expect a brand to be recognised if it has not been advertised. It is important for this communication not to be an isolated or improvised exercise. It must be an articulated element, which moves alongside the brand strategy.

There are no standard actions; each brand responds to an audience and has its differentiation. Through analysis and decision-making, a balance of companybrand-consumer is reached.

En menos de un año contarán con la acreditación pertinente, y empezarán a operar con este sistema a lo largo de la próxima campaña, avanza a Fruit Today el gerente, Pablo Castillo. Los supermercados demandan cada vez más este tipo de análisis “para verduras de hoja y hierbas aromáticas, ya que son uno de los quebraderos de cabeza más comunes”.

l proyecto aqUAFRESH, dotado con 665.000 euros por Eurostars, está llamado a ser un punto de inflexión en la operatividad de la industria de los alimentos mínimamente procesados, la conocida como IV gama. El proyecto está financiado por Eurostars, programa conjunto entre EUREKA y la Comisión Europea, cofinanciado por los Estados Miembro de la Unión a través de Horizonte 2020.

Grandes soluciones en tomate El catálogo de HM.Clause combina referentes como Cervantes y Dolcetini con novedades para ramo, cherry y ecológico Cervantes

M.Clause ofrece un amplio e interesante porfolio de tomate de cara a la próxima campaña. En tipología de ramo, la variedad Cervantes para recolección en suelto principalmente (aunque también puede recolectarse en rama) está experimentando un fuerte crecimiento por el potencial que ofrecen sus frutos, homogéneos, firmes y con excelente poscosecha, así como por el “efecto llamada” que ha generado su alto rendimiento. Ya el año pasado se observó un aumento de las ventas, y este año la tendencia continúa al alza. Juan Antonio Plaza, técnico de Desarrollo de Tomate, señala algunas de sus características: “su planta, muy abierta y fotonsintética, permite una continuidad muy buena durante todo el ciclo, llegando al final con una alta tasa de producción y frutos de calidad. Además, es muy interesante para ecológico por su resistencia a cuchara y spotted”.

Pensando en el mercado ecológico, prevén comenzar ensayos el año que viene con un nuevo material, EXP 37921, con vistas a cubrir la tendencia a ramos de calibre M-MM con sabor. La variedad, actualmente en desarrollo, cuenta con una “rama muy simétrica, entrenudos muy cortos y ofrece una producción continua” de grandes volúmenes.

En la categoría de cherry, el tipo pera Dulcini complementa la línea de Dolcetini (líder en su segmento y cada vez más requerido en los mercados europeos por su sabor y excelente conservación), añadiendo resistencia Fulvia y Fusarium radici. “Se trata de una solución muy atractiva para el ecológico”, asegura el técnico de Desarrollo Manuel Ferrer.

Cabe destacar, asimismo, el “éxito” de Adora en los mercados. “El proyecto se está consolidando, los bróker están muy contentos con la variedad”. La avalan su excelente sabor y aroma, su textura y su postcosecha, óptima para exportación.

Por último, en la categoría de Portainjertos, constituida por Protector y Defensor, Clause apuesta por el “vigor contenido”, en un mercado en el que la mayor parte de la oferta suele excederse. “Hay mucha oferta, pero elegir la variedad adecuada es clave para lograr un buen manejo”, explica Plaza.

HM.Clause is offering a wide and interesting portfolio of tomatoes for the next campaign. In vine typology, the Cervantes variety mainly for loose harvesting (although it may also be harvested on the vine), is undergoing a strong growth due to the potential offered by its fruit, which are homogeneous, firm and with an excellent postharvest, as well as due to the “call effect” that its high yield has generated. Last year an increase in sales was already being observed and this year the trend continues to rise. Juan Antonio Plaza, a Tomato Development Technician, points out some of its characteristics: “its plant, which is very open and photosynthetic, allows a very good continuity throughout the entire cycle, reaching the end with a high production rate, with quality fruit. Additionally, it is very interesting as an ecological crop due to its resistance to Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) and spotted.”

Within the vine tomato segment, the seed company has the variety CLX44108 in a pre-commercial phase, which could be launched in 2019/20. With M-G fruit (slightly larger than Cervantes), it has very good vine symmetry, significant firmness and is bright red in colour. Additionally, the balance of the plant makes the variety, which has been developed for long cycle, offer good results in the winter.

Bearing the ecological market in mind, the company is planning to start trials next year with a new material, EXP 37921, with a view to covering the trend for flavourful vine tomatoes with an M-MM calibre. The variety, currently in a developmental phase, has a “highly symmetrical vine, very short internodes and it offers continuous production” of large volumes.

In the cherry category, the Dulcini pear type complements the Dolcetini line (leader in its segment and increasingly demanded on the European markets for its flavour and excellent conservation), adding resistance to Fulvia and Fusarium radici. “It is a highly attractive solution for ecological crops”, states Development Technician Manuel Ferrer.

The latest development in vine cherry is CLX 37836, with high production, a very attractive vine, an average calibre of 32 mm and optimum weight for packaging in 250 g flow packs.

Organoleptically, its very fruity flavour stands out. This variety is already on sale and it completes the Genio, Creativo and Astuto offer, which are round cherry tomatoes that lead their segment thanks to their easy handling, resistance to cracking and above all, their conservation capacity (derived from their firmness), in addition to the versatility that they offer for different packaging and pre-prepared produce.

The “success” of Adora on the markets is also worth mentioning.

“The project is being consolidated, the brokers are very happy with the variety.” It is endorsed by its excellent flavour and aroma, its texture and post-harvest, which is optimum for export.

Finally, in the Rootstock category, made up of Protector and Defensor, Clause is committed to “contained strength” on a market where most of the offer usually is surplus to requirements. “There is a great deal of offer, but choosing the right variety is essential for good handling,” Plaza explains.

ras el ‘sí’ de la Comisión Europea a la compra de Monsanto por parte de Bayer por 54.400 millones de euros el 23 de marzo, el pasado 29 de mayo fue Estados Unidos quien dio su bendición a una operación que constituirá el mayor gigante agroquímico a nivel mundial. Las cuestiones que planteaba esta operación eran muchas, principalmente en materia de competencia, por ello las autoridades fijaron una premisa: Bayer debía desprenderse de activos por valor de 9.000 millones de dólares en el negocio agroquímico. ¿Qué pasaría a continuación? Se lo preguntamos a Guillaume Lacarriere, Commercial Lead de la división de Vegetales de Monsanto Iberica, pocas semanas antes de que las autoridades federales de competencia de Estados Unidos dieran luz verde a esta macroperación Bayer-Monsanto. Finalmente, la compra se cerró el pasado jueves 7 de junio, y la integración concreta de Monsanto empezará “dentro de unos dos meses”.

Hablando de tecnología, parece que se perfila un futuro prometedor con la edición genómica de CRISPR-Cas9. ¿La han adquirido? ¿Qué ventajas o inconvenientes le ve?

La innovación en mejora genética continúa avanzando, y la edición de genes, como la tecnología CRISPR-Cas9, es un ejemplo de ello. Esta tecnología ayudará a los mejoradores a integrar las características deseadas en las semillas de los cultivos con una eficiencia y precisión que nunca antes se había hecho, ofreciendo nuevas soluciones para los agricultores y para las prácticas agríco-

mos fuertes dentro del mercado. Variedades como Zirconyta nos han permitido volver a destacarnos en cherry, porque responde muy bien a lo que necesita toda la cadena.

Tenemos muchas esperanzas depositadas en esta variedad de sabor. También invertimos mucho en pimiento, un producto en el que tenemos una buena cuota de mercado con nuestros Lamuyo y California.

En líneas generales, ¿hacia dónde va el mercado de tomate?

Por delante hay grandes retos como la sequía, el aumento de la población mundial, los cambios en los hábitos de consumo, el aumento de la demanda de productos bio… ¿son también líneas fuertes en vuestra I+D? Efectivamente. Sabemos que la población mundial está creciendo en más de un 32% en los 35 años anteriores a 2050, y en más del 53% hasta final de siglo y necesitamos producir más, y de forma sostenible, para que una alimentación accesible esté al alcance de esa población creciente. En los últimos años han lanzado nuevas variedades que aportan valor a la cadena como el cherry Zirconyta, la gama de pepino Super root non stop e incluso una nueva línea de brócoli. ¿Qué será lo próximo que veremos?

El mercado quiere sabor, sabor, sabor. Pero al final necesitamos algo que combine sabor, resistencias, producción, vida hace 20 o 25 años se empezaron a demandar más tipologías y ahora estamos observando que los clientes están buscando reducir la oferta.

No significa que de un año para otro dejen de existir, simplemente se están especializando más en un determinado producto para poder diferenciarse, y quieren centrarse en un tomate o dos, pero que sea bueno. Por su parte el consumidor quiere un tipo de tomate para cada tipo de consumo, y ahí influye mucho el aspecto cultural. En España se come el tomate de cuello verde para ensalada, pero en Francia u Holanda, por ejemplo, no se encuentra.

Han alcanzado acuerdos de licenciamiento de CRISPR-Cas9 con diferentes empresas y centros de I+D genetistas en los laboratorios y de ahí salieron conversaciones interesantes, nos aportaron muchas ideas para nuevos desarrollos. ¿Por ejemplo?

Les preocupa sobre todo lo que pueda venir de fuera, nuevos virus y razas, cómo está creciendo la producción en otras zonas también nos propusieron colaboraciones para desarrollar nuevas variedades o conceptos en sabor. Surgieron varios proyectos interesantes que se podrán ir viendo en el futuro.

“Bayer will keep Monsanto’s fruit and vegetable crop business” Fruit Today euromagazine interviewed Guillaume Lacarriere, Commercial Lead from the Vegetable Department of Monsanto Iberica (Spain and Portugal) After the ‘yes’ from the European Commission to the purchase of Monsanto by Bayer for 54,400 million euros on the 23rd of March, the United States gave its blessing to the operation that will form the largest agrochemical giant in the world on the 29th of May. There were many questions set forth by this operation, mainly on the subject of competition; therefore, the authorities set a premise: Bayer must dispose of assets for an amount of 9,000 million dollars in the agrochemical business. What would happen next? We asked Guillaume Lacarriere, Commercial Lead from the Vegetable department of Monsanto Iberica, a few weeks before the United States federal competition authorities gave the go-ahead to this Bayer-Monsanto macro-operation. Finally, the purchase was closed on Thursday, the 7th of June, and the specific integration of Monsanto will start “in around two months’ time”.

How is the purchase of Monsanto by Bayer affecting and how will it affect the Vegetable Department of Monsanto?

Since Bayer is selling its seed business, will you remain at the head of the new group in this segment?

Indeed, Bayer will keep Monsanto’s vegetable crop business. Our efforts and our focus have always centred on the customer, taking both the farmers and the end consumers into consideration, and this will continue to give value to the business.

The scientist José Miguel Mulet affirms that the EU “was an important power in agricultural biotechnology”, but was brought to a halt by the anti-transgenic regulations, with the paradox that they are banned in Europe, but are imported from the USA. Why do you think that transgenic farming continues to be demonised? The name of your company, Monsanto, has been linked to transgenic modifications for many years and this image has not been very positive…

Unfortunately, plant biotechnology has been considered in the EU from an ideological and political point of view, undermining the role of science. This has caused the lack of a reliable legal framework and this makes technological development more difficult, both private and state-sponsored. The result is that European farmers are losing their competitiveness vis-à-vis other areas in the world, which have more technological tools at their disposal.

Talking about technology, it seems that a promising future is being outlined with the genomic edition of CRISPR-Cas9. Have you acquired it? What advantages or disadvantages do you see for it?

Innovation in improved genetics continues to move forward and the edition of genes, such as the CRISPR-Cas9 technology, is an example of this. This technology will help the breeders to integrate the desired characteristics in the crop seeds with an efficiency and accuracy never seen before, offering new solutions for farmers and for modern agricultural practices. For example, it can be used to disable an unfavourable characteristic such as the vulnerability to a disease, or enable a beneficial characteristic, such as tolerance to drought. At Monsanto, we have reached licensing agreements for this technology with different companies and research centres, aimed at being able to pass on the benefits of this technology to the farmers through our seeds.

There are great challenges ahead such as the drought, the increase in the world population, the changes in consumer habits, the increase in demand for bio produce… are they also important lines in your R&D? Indeed. We know that the world population will grow by over 32% in the 35 years before 2050 and by over 53% by the end of the century, and we need to produce more, in a sustainable way, in order for accessible food to be within the reach of this growing population. Additionally, there are developing countries where a greater variety of products is being demanded. At the same time as export, we are also considering the development of the local market that has been occurring in recent years and that it demands greater sustainability for its production. The drought has affected us a great deal this year and for this reason we are looking for varieties that need less water and that have stronger plants. All of this forms part of our current research.

In recent years new varieties have been launched that bring value to the chain such as the Zirconyta cherry tomato, the Super root nonstop cucumber range and even a new line of broccoli. What will be the next thing we will see?

We are always looking for solutions alongside our customer, the farmer and also attempting to understand what the consumer wants, because in the end it is the consumer who decides. Our investments are focused mainly on tomatoes and rootstock, a segment where we are strong within the market. Varieties such as Zirconyta have allowed us to stand out in cherry tomatoes again, because it responds very well to what the entire chain needs. We have great hopes deposited in this tasty variety. We have also invested a great deal in peppers, a product where we have a good market share with our Lamuyo and California varieties.

In general, where is the tomato market going?

The market wants flavour, flavour, flavour. But in the end, we need something that combines flavour, resistance, production, shelf life… 20 or 25 years ago they started asking for more typologies and now we are observing that farmers are looking to reduce the offer. It doesn’t mean that from one year to the next there will be fewer varieties, just that they are specialising more on a specific produce to be able to differentiate themselves and they want to concentrate on one or two types of good quality tomato. The consumer, on the other hand, wants a type of tomato for each type of consumption and here the cultural aspect plays an important role. In Spain, green tomatoes are eaten in salads, but in France or Holland, for example, they don’t even exist.

In February, you held the event ‘Iberica Younited’ to show customers your road map in R&D, what did you show them?

With ‘Iberica Younited’ we opened the doors to our R&D ‘kitchen’, something that we had never done quite so openly before. We showed them everything that our breeders and geneticists do in the laboratories and some interesting conversations arose from this.

They gave us many ideas for new developments.

Could you give me an example of this?

They are concerned about anything that might come from outside, new viruses and races, as production is growing in other regions… they also proposed collaborations to develop new varieties or concepts in flavour. Several interesting projects arose that will be available in the future.

Kumato Tropical®: tiene el mismo color marrón que el tradicional pero se diferencia por su aroma, que evoca al de las frutas tropicales. Se lanzará el próximo año.

Nebula: con este cherry redondo rojo se ofrece una auténtica explosión de sabor. El fruto posee una textura muy crujiente y es muy jugoso en su interior. Al morderlo, explota en la boca y la llena de sabor. Al tener mucha más fructosa que glucosa, aporta un característico sabor afrutado.

Baby Kumato®: presente en el mercado desde el próximo año, es un poco más pequeño que el mini. Buenísimo de sabor, es además crujiente e ideal para las mezclas con otros colores o para consumo como snack saludable.

“Nowadays experiences are on sale, rather than fruit” Syngenta is seeking to revolutionise the tomato universe with El Reino de los Sabores® European consumers are increasingly demanding greater variety and flavour in tomatoes, a mantra that is being repeated and which companies such as Syngenta are responding to with highly diverse materials, both in outer and inner appearance.

They are also going a step further and are breaking down the barriers to get closer to consumers using storytelling, since today, end customers do not only look at the price, they also want to know what is behind the product they are buying and receive additional information, for example, through recipes, to know how to use the produce correctly, which pairings are recommended and even the correct moments for eating the produce. This is clearly shown in the brand ‘El Reino de los Sabores®’. Five varieties of mini tomato are included under the same umbrella, with others expected to be added over the next few years. All of them stand out due to their colour, size (fruit of 12-14 grams average weight and 25-30 mm diameter) and their high flavour profile. In short, complementary proposals, ideal for presenting as an assortment and used for snack and ‘on the go’ eating.

Ivorino: is a yellow pear cherry tomato, which has a size and flavour very similar to the abovementioned ones and is in an introductory phase.

Kumato Tropical®: it has the same brown colour as the traditional Kumato, but its flavour is different, evoking that of tropical fruit. It will be launched next year.

Dulce miel: designed for consumers who are seeking new experiences through innovative produce (it is estimated that they represent between 10-15% of the total on a European level), it is a green pear cherry tomato, with a completely different flavour to any other on the market up to now. “It is very sweet and is balanced in acids. Its flavour is very exotic and innovative, and it is very eye-catching due to its highly attractive colour”, according to Rafael Salinas, Tomato Manager for Spain and Portugal.

Baby Kumato®: on the market next year, it is slightly smaller than the mini. With an excellent flavour, it is also crunchy and ideal for mixing with other colours or for eating as a healthy snack.

Angelle: is a red pear cherry tomato, ideal for eating as a snack. Its flavour is due to its amount of sugar and organic acids, and worth mentioning are also its excellent texture and aroma, which leave a very pleasant aftertaste, a fact that has been recognised by the market.

The brand is being extended to offer a Kumato® for each type of consumer. Therefore, added to its Kumato Original® (medium-sized fruit and stable flavour, recognisable throughout the year) and Mini Kumato® (delicious, very crunchy) versions, there are another three new concepts:

Bamano: very similar to Angelle in shape and size, and even with a similar flavour, although slightly sweeter.

The main difference lies in the colour: a very attractive bright orange.

Kumato Gran Sabor®: now on sale; it is a gourmet version of the traditional Kumato. This ‘Limited Edition’ has a more rounded shape and a very intense, delicious taste.

a casa de semillas Hazera sigue ampliando su portafolio de tomate, desarrollando nuevas referencias que satisfacen las necesidades de toda la cadena, desde el agricultor hasta la distribución. Su oferta abarca casi todas las tipologías, y tiene grandes referentes de sabor como el cherry amarillo Summersun, al que le sigue en esta campaña una novedad que ya está acaparando el interés de los productores, Flamantyno. “Tiene un sabor similar a Summersun y la ventaja principal es que incorpora resistencia a TYLCV. Es una variedad muy rústica, indicada para ciclos largos”, detalla Juan Montes, responsable de Desarrollo de Tomate.

Dentro del segmento de tomate rama, destacan Sotogrande y Sotomayor, para ambos ha sido su primera campaña comercial y han funcionado bien, con grandes resultados.

El primero destaca por su excelente color y alta producción, mientras que Sotomayor es de gran calibre y producción muy alta. Gracias a su calidad y al hecho de mantener un color intenso, han conseguido mejores precios que otras variedades en este ejercicio.

Otro material a destacar es Corredor, que va camino de la tercera campaña como variedad comercial. Es precoz y muy productiva y ya está implantada. “Es una de las referentes en Almería en tomate grueso y también funciona bien en otras regiones como Granada o Málaga para el segmento de beef y ciclo

The ecological segment is also worth mentioning, since it currently represents 30% of the company’s production (10 hectares certified with CAAE, a total of 45 hectares under glass, including the nursery).

Amongst its new developments, it emphasises the opening of two new branches in Balerma and Gangosa (Almeria), planned for this summer and the end of the year respectively, as well as the creation of a new support figure in the warehouse.

El complicado reto de innovar en berenjena Rijk Zwaan ha lanzado Yolanda RZ, negra para cerrar el ciclo, y Araceli RZ, la primera rayada sin espinas (400-450 gr) para mercado interno, y también sin espinas y con larga vida.

Copan el 83% del mercado de berenjena invernada

La última novedad, lanzada el año pasado, es Yolanda RZ, con la que completan el ciclo (todas se plantan en agosto, pero en fechas distintas, y Yolanda RZ estaría entre Thelma RZ y Letizia RZ). De vigor intermedio, su planta es “más vestida”, su fruto tiene una calidad “extraordinaria”, y también carece de espinas en el cáliz y cuenta con una buena poscosecha.

Entre los hitos de Rijk Zwaan está también el haber sido los primeros en lanzar una variedad híbrida de berenjena rayada para invernadero, Angela RZ. Le siguió Lidia RZ, más vigorosa y con un mayor aguante de color en los meses de invierno, para ciclo completo.

La última novedad, introducida este mismo año, es Araceli RZ, la única variedad rayada

sin espinas del mercado. “Cuaja y produce muy bien en invierno y mantiene homogeneidad de color todo el año”.

Entre todas sus variedades, la firma ostenta el 83% de la cuota de berenjena en invernadero (unas 1.800 Has en Almería entre invierno y primavera).

ace ya unos años Rijk Zwaan consiguió lanzar al mercado la primera berenjena sin espinas en el cáliz, (quien la manipula no se pincha y los frutos no se rozan entre sí), lo que supuso que la empresa innovara en un producto muy tradicional. La inmensa mayoría de los consumidores se decanta por las tipologías negra y semilarga, si bien es cierto que en el mercado vemos otras como la rayada e incluso, fuera de nuestras fronteras, la blanca.

Además, al tener que cocinarla para su consumo, pierde color y eso es un inconveniente a la hora de innovar. Por ello, los breeder se centran en aspectos más convencionales como la producción y la calidad de fruto, explica a Fruit Today, Alberto Domingo, Crop Specialist de Berenjena.

Esa primera variedad sin espinas, Thelma RZ, sigue al pie del cañón, copando el 65% del mercado invernado, porque además da al agricultor una producción continua de inicio a fin y tiene larga vida, facilitando el envío a destinos muy lejanos.

The complicated challenge of innovating the aubergine sector Rijk Zwaan has launched Yolanda RZ, a black aubergine to close the cycle, and Araceli RZ, the first thornless, striped one Years ago, Rijk Zwaan managed to launch onto the market the first aubergine without any thorns on the calyx (workers do not get pricked and the pieces do not scratch against each other), which meant that the company innovated a very traditional product.

Most consumers opt for black, semi-long types, although it is true that we see others on the market such as striped and even, outside our borders, white aubergines. Additionally, as it has to be cooked for eating, it loses its colour and this is a disadvantage when innovating. For this reason, the breeders have concentrated on more conventional aspects, such as production and quality, as Alberto Domingo, Aubergine Crop Specialist, explains to Fruit Today.

The last new development, launched last year, is Yolanda RZ, which completes the cycle (all of them are planted in August, but on different dates and Yolanda RZ would be in between Thelma RZ and Letizia RZ).

With an intermediate strength, its plant is “more clothed”, its aubergines have “extraordinary” quality and the plant also has no thorns on the calyx and has a good post-harvest.

This first thornless variety, Thelma RZ is still going strong, taking over 65% of the market under glass, because it also gives farmers a continuous production from start to end and it has a long shelf life, making dispatch to more distant destinations easier.

Amongst Rijk Zwaan’s milestones is also having been the first to launch a hybrid striped aubergine variety for greenhouses, Angela RZ. This is followed by Lidia RZ, which is sturdier and the colour of which lasts longer during the winter months, for complete cycle.

The last new development, introduced this year, is Araceli RZ, the only thornless striped variety on the market. “It sets and produces very well in the winter and it maintains a homogeneous colour throughout the year.”

This is followed by Letizia RZ (18% of the market share), which is sturdier than Thelma and a larger calibre (400-450 g) for the home market and also

la hora de desarrollar nuevos materiales Capgen Seeds tiene muy en cuenta los altos estándares de calidad que demandan sus clientes. En el caso de la berenjena, cuentan con una variedad de referencia, Asia F1, que lanzaron hace apenas dos años y que gana cuota de mercado en Almería por los resultados que ofrece gracias a la rusticidad de su planta, tanto en convencional como en ecológico. Joaquín Cañabate, responsable de Desarrollo, describe algunas de sus características: “Tiene un sistema radicular potente que permite hacer cultivos de largo recorrido y llega con calidad de frutos incluso a la salida del invierno”. Otra de sus ventajas es la “carga continua” de frutos, firmes, con piel muy oscura y brillante y sin espinas en el cáliz. A todo ello se suma la poscosecha, óptima para exportación.

Las fechas de plantación son las propias del ciclo único, en agosto, y las últimas recolecciones se pueden alargar hasta julio. Aunque en

principio se enfoca a producciones de España, también se vende en Italia. La empresa tiene en marcha nuevos desarrollos de berenjena negra, la cilíndrica (muy alargada y fina, común en los países del Magreb) y la redonda violeta.

Quality at the end of winter When developing new materials Capgen Seeds takes the high quality standards demanded by their customers into serious consideration. In the case of aubergines, they have a reference variety, Asia F1, which they launched just two years ago and that is gaining market share in Almeria due to its results thanks to the robustness of its plant, both in conventional and in ecological production. Joaquín Cañabate, Head of Development, describes some of its characteristics: “It has a strong root system that makes it good for long haul crops and it produces quality fruit even at the end of the winter”. Another of its advantages is the “continuous load” of fruit, firm, with very dark, shiny skin and without any thorns on the calyx. Added to all this is its postharvest, which is optimum for export.

The planting dates are those of a single cycle, in August and the last harvests can be extended until July. Although in principle, it focuses mainly on Spanish production, it is also sold in Italy. l ascenso del California SV1204PB de Seminis es una realidad, y su buena evolución se debe principalmente a su gran adaptación a las condiciones de cultivo en unas fechas complicadas como son los días de final de julio.

Miguel Jesús Fernández, agricultor de la zona de la Opepesa, Adra Chozas (El Ejido), es uno de los productores que ha apostado por primera vez por esta variedad de pimiento en 2017/18. “Lo planté el 25 de julio con intención de mantenerlo hasta abril y estoy muy contento con él”. Su experiencia con SV1204PB ha sido muy buena durante todo el ciclo. “Cuajó muy bien al principio y ha llegado muy bien arriba. Su fruto es uniforme durante todo el cultivo, sin apenas segunda. Sobresale por su aguante en planta y por su color, con un rojo muy destacado que no pasa a naranja”. A nivel agronómico, la planta es bastante abierta, una cualidad que favorece el control de enfermedades.

Además, es “fuerte y de fácil manejo”. En cuanto a productividad, Fernández ha notado que “en las copas produce más GG y abajo más G.

“A los compradores les llama mucho la atención por su color”, asegura Twose. SV4502PP se recomienda para plantaciones del 15 de agosto a septiembre. Es idónea para ciclos bastante largos por su gran productividad y el alto porcentaje de aprovechamiento de frutos (por encima del 90%). Su paquete de resistencias incluye L4 y spotted.

De menos a más. Así se podría resumir la producción de SV5581PH, un Lamuyo que gusta mucho a los agricultores por su homogeneidad y la facilidad con la que se confecciona, todo un valor añadido, ya que permite un importante ahorro de tiempo, explica Luis Twose, responsable comercial de Seminis. Muchos agricultores repiten. Es el caso de Elías Moreno, productor de Tierras de Almería (El Ejido). “Me gustó en su momento y, a día de hoy, estoy encantado. Su fruto, con mucha pared, es consistente y muy pesado (hasta 600 gr.). “No es demasiado grande, es recto y forma bien. También es muy productivo, le voy a cortar 10kg/m² y el primer año llegué a los 11kg”. Otro aspecto interesante que señala Moreno es la posibilidad de “cogerlo avenado o cortarlo en rojo, puedes jugar con él. El año que viene repito”.

“El consumidor actual busca ajo de residuo 0” Peregrin One Garlic ofrece un producto de calidad para el consumidor del siglo XXI

l sector del ajo no está tan profesionalizado como el de otros productos. Al ser residual, no existe una gran investigación sobre sus enfermedades, por lo que hay que controlar muy bien la rotación del terreno para conseguir una buena calidad y, de forma paralela, hacerlo con el menor número de fitosanitarios posible. “El consumidor actual busca el producto lo menos tratado posible, prácticamente de residuo 0”, explican Diego Mª Martínez, adjunto dirección de Peregrin One Garlic, y Víctor López, director de producción.

Su empresa, de origen familiar, comenzó su andadura hace 13 años en Pulpí (Almería) y tiene una delegación en Córdoba. Con una media de edad de 35 años y “muchas ganas de trabajar”, se definen como productores, manipuladores y comercializadores, y controlan al máximo cada una de las fases para asegurar sus estándares. “Trabajamos con algunos agricultores a los que les facilitamos la semilla, así nos aseguramos de que todos los ajos que pasan por nuestro almacén tengan la misma calidad”. En total disponen de 300 ha de superficie en las que producen todas las variedades de ajo (morado, spring blanco y violeta), y desde hace dos años también cuentan con 20 ha de spring blanco bio.

Todas las fincas en las que trabajan se ubican siempre alrededor de sus instalaciones para realizar un seguimiento pormenorizado y reducir los costes de transporte, un factor determinante en la campaña pasada. “Los problemas de calidad por la lluvia y el calor en España repercutieron en los precios, y respecto a 2016/17 las cotizaciones se redujeron a la mitad. Si antes se vendió a 3 €/kilo, ahora se vende a 1,50 o 1,60”. Hay que recordar que en 2016 se registraron precios récord ya que China redujo su producción, por lo que el sector vendió a máximos de 3,40/kg.

El inicio de esta campaña ha estado marcado “por las lluvias y el miedo a China porque ha plantado más. La suerte que tenemos es que la gente no quiere nada de China, porque se ha mentalizado

de que no es bueno”. Para diferenciar de forma clara el origen, en Peregrin One Garlic optan por señalizar el packaging con símbolos/banderas que refrendan las garantías sanitarias de la UE. Business

The family-run company, was set up 13 years’ ago in Pulpí (Almeria) and it has a branch in Cordoba. All the farms where they work are always located around their installations in order to be able to carry out a careful monitoring process and reduce transport costs, one of the determining factors during the past campaign.

“The quality problems due to the rain and heat in Spain were passed on to the prices and compared to 2016/17, they dropped by half. When they were previously sold at € 3/kilo, now they are selling at € 1.50 o € 1.60”. It is worth remembering that in 2016 record prices were recorded because China reduced its production, therefore the sector sold at maximum prices of € 3.40/kg.

The start of this campaign has been marked “by the rain and the fear of China because it has planted more. We are lucky that people do not want produce from China, because they have become conditioned with the idea that the produce is not good.” To show the origin as a clear difference, at Peregrin OneGarlic they have decided to mark the packaging with symbols/flags that endorse the EU’s health guarantees.

a firma aragonesa de Fuentes de Ebro es proveedora durante todo el año de la conocida “cebolla dulce”, producto procedente tanto de Zaragoza como de Perú, país en el que también está implantada.

La firma, tercera generación del negocio familiar, ha conseguido en pocos años ampliar el volumen de su negocio con el establecimiento de producciones en Perú, garantizadas por la estancia permanente de uno de sus miembros, desde donde se garantiza la calidad y el abastecimiento del producto que se importa.

Jumosol es una de las empresas cuyas cebollas poseen la D.O. Cebolla Dulce Fuentes de Ebro. El año pasado fueron más de 100 hectáreas las plantadas para abastecer esta figura de calidad y con las que se obtuvieron unas 5.000 toneladas. “Para la actual campaña, nuestras previsiones pasaban por duplicar las hectáreas, pero las sucesivas crecidas incontroladas del río Ebro, se llevaron tras de sí unas 70 hectáreas, con lo que dispondremos de unas 130, lo que nos obligará a acabar la temporada antes y empezar con las importaciones en

octubre,” explica Daniel Molina, director de la compañía.

El directivo señala su interés en salvaguardar el material genético de la zona e incluso realizar diferentes selecciones. “Llevamos muchos años realizando una selección masal de las cualidades que buscamos y para que no se degrade el material hacemos varias líneas en paralelo. Son más de 15 años trabajando muy activamente en este aspecto”.

La compañía, aunque conocida principalmente por su cebolla dulce, ofrece soluciones en toda la gama: desde cebolla morada, hasta la chalota, la cebolla de grano y la cebolleta dulce. “La más complicada es la dulce y lo tenemos todo preparado para dar respuesta a formatos, packaging, calidades, etc.; así como garantizar la cadena de suministro global, desde la semilla, el cultivo, la confección, la conservación y la comercialización. El cliente, además quiere soluciones a sus problemas y propuestas nuevas de producto o packaging.”

En la actualidad, Jumosol se encuentra inmersa en un proceso de ampliación de su nave de confección, así como de su capacidad frigorífica.

The executive shows his interest in safeguarding the genetic material from the region and even making different selections. “We have spent many years making a massal selection of the qualities that we are looking for and in order to not degrade the material we are cultivating several lines at the same time. We have been working very actively on this aspect for 15 years now.”

Although it is mainly known for its sweet onions, the company offers solutions throughout the range: from red onions, to shallots, grano onions and sweet spring onions. “The most complicated onion is the sweet one and we have everything in place to respond to formats, packaging, qualities, etc.; as well as guaranteeing the overall supply chain: from seeds, crops, preparation, conservation and marketing. Customers also want solutions to their problems and new product or packaging proposals.”

Currently, Jumosol is immersed in an enlargement process of its preparation premises, as well as its cold storage capacity.

Its internationalisation process continues to increase for some Italian companies with widereaching export experience. Almaverde Bio triunfa con su concepto de islas de producto fresco en supermercados Estudian trasladar la experiencia a Portugal

ún está en fase de test, pero a tenor de los primeros resultados, todo indica que el nuevo proyecto de la marca Almaverde Bio tiene mucho futuro y está llamado a renovar la forma en la que se venden las frutas y hortalizas ecológicas dentro de los supermercados. Se trata de las Islas Almaverde Bio, un nuevo concepto que consiste en introducir un espacio diferenciado dentro del supermercado para concentrar toda la oferta orgánica de la marca, tanto a granel como envasada, y que además cuenta con la asistencia de personal especializado que atiende de forma directa a los clientes. Carlos Soto, gerente de Ca’nova España, brazo comercial de la firma de matriz italiana, detalla que las primeras experiencias que se han realizado en Italia han permitido duplicar las ventas de sus productos bio, principalmente por la opción de compra a granel y la amplia oferta reunida en un solo espacio, aunque también se ofrece la opción de autoservicio.

De momento las primeras “Islas” ya están funcionando en Italia, un mercado donde el ecológico es una realidad de consumo con 3.021 millones de euros en ventas en 2016 (+15% respecto a 2015), y un 78% de familias que adquirieron al menos un producto bio en 2017 (1 millón más que en 2016). Además, ya estudian la posibilidad de hacer un test en cadenas de supermercados de España y Portugal, con vistas a exportar esta modalidad de venta, que prevé el alquiler de espacios dentro de supermercados, o bien un porcentaje sobre las ventas, dependiendo de cada caso.

At the moment, the first ‘Islands’ are already up and running in Italy, a market where ecological produce is a consumption reality, with 3,021 million euros in sales in 2016 (+15% compared to 2015), and 78% of families acquiring at least one bio product in 2017 (1 million more than in 2016). In addition, they are already studying the possibility of carrying out a trial in Spanish and Portuguese supermarket chains, with a view to exporting this sales method, which plans the renting of spaces inside supermarkets, or a percentage of the sales, depending on each case.

Advantages of the islands Making the right choice when offering loose ecological fruit and vegetables brings important advantages: it allows a wider, more specialised range to be offered; it improves the quality/price relationship; and it involves an essential aspect for reaching consumers: the fact of paying a more economical shopping bill. The Almaverde Bio islands allow all of this through a specific, perfectly identifiable area, with personnel who weigh the produce and serve it in personalised bags and the guarantee of the bio certification on each of the pieces that are being marketed.

The first experiences have shown an immediate rise of at least double in bio sales, sources from Ca’nova guarantee. A figure that increases by another 10% after the start up of Loyalty actions such as promotions with gadgets, information about the produce, tastings, etc.

Spanish production Ca’nova España was established to complete the bio fruit and vegetable range from its parent company, Apofruit, the most important top level cooperative in Italy, with 4,300 members. Its aim is no other than guaranteeing the supply to its customers 12 months of the year with the Almaverde Bio brand. The company, based in MercaMurcia, continues with the philosophy of excellence, committing itself to a demanding quality control. “Above everything else, we are technicians and our work consists of controlling the production of our associate farmers to ensure that all the produce that we market is completely safe and holds the maximum standards”. In 2017, the Spanish office invoiced 4.5 million euros amongst all its references and, as a whole, this year the network of Ca’nova companies in Italy, Spain and France have made a total of 90 million euros, growing by 20% compared to the previous year. They have also reached a total of 34,300 tonnes of fresh produce holding ecological certificates, amongst their over 40 references. Likewise, the export brand, ‘Almaverde Bio Ambiente’ brings together over 600 references amongst fresh produce, preserves, meat, fish, etc., forming an enormous range to serve the lovers of the healthiest food.

n sus orígenes Grupo Gullino era una empresa familiar dedicada a la producción de manzana. Posteriormente, aunque siguió con ella, dio un giro para especializarse en kiwi y ahora vuelve a esos inicios, con una estrategia que en los próximos años prevé equilibrar la balanza de ambas frutas al 50%. El año pasado dieron el primer paso con el inicio de la comercialización de manzana, explica Armando Peirone, comercial de la empresa.

La producción de esta fruta de pepita está ubicada íntegramente en Piamonte, a entre 400 y 600 metros de altura, lo que otorga a sus productos una gran calidad y color. A corto plazo sumarán, además, la producción de manzana bio, apenas terminen el plazo de reconversión iniciado en varias fincas.

“Actualmente ya tenemos kiwi ecológico, y representa el 35% de nuestra producción total”, señala Peirone.

Para este 2018, esperan alcanzar las 12.000 Tn de manzana en 120 hectáreas en propiedad (19.000 Tn y 350 Has propias en el caso del kiwi), y reeditar o incluso superar la facturación conseguida el año pasado, 28 millones de euros.

Campaña anormal El ejercicio ha sido complicado en lo que se refiere a su producto estrella, el kiwi. “Ha habido poca producción, aunque los precios 80 Fruittoday

altos han compensado un poco”. La evolución de las ventas ha sido más lenta de lo previsto, esperaban más demanda, pero han logrado abastecer a todos sus clientes. De cara a la próxima campaña esperan “retomar la normalidad”. La cosecha comienza en septiembre con las variedades más precoces de kiwi verde y amarillo, y continúa con Hayward desde noviembre a mitad de mayo.

Last year, the group took the first step by starting to market apples, Armando Peirone, a salesman from the company, explains. rigine Group, el segundo protagonista a nivel mundial en producción y comercialización del kiwi, ha dado un paso más en su estrategia empresarial con el inicio de envíos de fruta chilena a China y el Sudeste Asiático. Fruit Today estuvo con el nuevo director general del consorcio, Alessandro Zampagna, unos días antes del desembarco del primer contenedor en el puerto de Shenzhen (Guangdong), durante la celebración de la feria italiana Macfrut. “Este proyecto ha sido posible gracias a las sinergias creadas con nuestro nuevo socio chileno, David del Curto”, manifestó Zampagna. El programa comienza cuando finaliza la campaña europea, y en este primer ejercicio contempla el envío de entre 50 y 60 contenedores de kiwi chileno, principalmente dirigidos a Asia, y en menor medida a España.

“A día de hoy el único factor limitante son los volúmenes”, explicó Zampagna. “En 2019 esperamos incrementarlos, y para ello estamos planteando la entrada de nuevos socios chilenos”. El kiwi Sweeki se venderá tanto a granel como en bandejas en pequeñas, en tiendas minoristas y supermercados de varios países asiáticos.

Finalizada una campaña europea que ha sido complicada en líneas generales por el descenso de la producción y la gran diferencia de precios entre calibres grandes y pequeños, Origine Group mira ahora hacia delante, sin dejar de lado la investigación (están experimentando con variedades de kiwi amarillo y rojo), y de forma paralela focalizando más esfuerzos en la diversificación, a través de la marca Pera Italia. “Las variedades principales que trabajamos, tanto en volumen como calidad, son Abate y Williams, pero tenemos una amplia gama de tipologías”. Para el año que viene, su objetivo pasa por comercializar su Pera Italia en otros mercados como el de Norte América.

Once the European campaign has ended, which has been complicated in general due to the drop in production and the significant difference of prices between large and small sized fruit, Origine Group is now looking ahead, without putting research to one side (they are experimenting with red and yellow kiwi varieties), and at the same time, focusing more effort on diversification, through the brand name ‘Pera Italia’. “The main varieties that we work with, both in volume and in quality, are Abate and Williams, but we have a wide range of typologies.” For next year, the group’s aim is to market its ‘Pera Italia’ on other markets, such as the Northern American one.

ortosabor, empresa de Grupo Salvi, nació en 2001 con la idea de entrar en el negocio de las hortalizas, un segmento en el que la firma italiana no trabajaba, pero en el que Giorgio Salvi creía firmemente. Desde entonces la empresa afincada en El Ejido (Almería), se ha hecho un hueco hasta superar los 45 millones de euros de facturación en 2017 (de los cuales 12 corresponden a la comercialización de fruta). Aron Bitri, director comercial y socio de Hortosabor junto con Emilio Gerez, explica a Fruit Today que su crecimiento ha sido paulatino. “En 2012 hicimos una inversión grande con la compra de fincas, y hace dos años adquirimos un almacén en Las Norias”. La firma se dedica a la producción y comercialización de hortofrutícolas, si bien el grueso de su negocio corresponde a dos de las principales hortalizas de la zona, pimiento (9 millones de kilos) y pepino (6 millones), con producción propia los 12 meses, así como tomate de diferentes tipologías (8 mill. kg), berenjenas (unos 5 millones) y calabacín (2 millones). También cuenta su oferta con fruta de agua: sandía y en menor medida melón. La mayoría de su producción se destina a cadenas de supermercados europeas. “Con algunas de 82 Fruittoday

It also produces water fruit: watermelons and, to a lesser degree, melons. Most of its production is channelled to European supermarket chains. “With some of them set amounts and prices are negotiated for the entire season.”

Foray into the bio segment Amongst Hortosabor’s next challenges is the production and marketing of ‘bio’ fruit and vegetables. “We are developing a project to start producing from next campaign onwards in Nijar, working alongside reliable producers.”

The foray into this segment will allow the company to serve the growing demand for produce that is more environmentally-friendly.

Naturitalia sigue apostando por la renovación varietal y lanza una nueva línea de fruta sin refrigerar

ruit Today se reunió con Augusto Renella, Marketing manager y coordinador de Exportaciones de la firma, que avanzó algunos de sus retos más inmediatos. “Estamos llevando a cabo una importante renovación varietal de fruta de hueso en el sur de Italia, especialmente en albaricoque, un segmento en el que crecemos en superficie, y en el que hemos optado por materiales nuevos, con coloraciones en rojo más atractivas y sabor más dulce, y por los de COT, muy habituales en Francia”.

También cobra cada vez más importancia la uva de mesa seedless. “Estamos creciendo mucho, ya supone el 35% del total de la uva que producimos (incluyendo la Red Globe con semilla)”. En Naturitalia trabajan con variedades seedless SNFL a través de una de sus cooperativas asociadas, concentrando la producción en Puglia, y de forma paralela siguen teniendo uvas con semilla como Italia y Victoria para cubrir la demanda interna, donde la tradición cultural sigue pesando.

Otro proyecto interesante, en este caso dirigido en exclusiva al mercado italiano y los vecinos Suiza y Austria, es una línea de fruta

sin refrigerar, que se comercializa en 3 o 4 días, y se pondrá en marcha en julio. El valor de esta gama reside en la alta calidad de la fruta, que se recolecta en el punto óptimo de maduración para ofrecer un sabor y aroma inigualables.

Para ensalzar este valor añadido, han optado por envases elaborados con un tipo de madera usado hace muchos años en el mercado.

La cooperativa de segundo grado divide la campaña en cuatro estaciones siendo las principales invierno y verano. El inicio de la primera parte, con el kiwi como producto principal, fue bastante positivo en líneas generales. “Comenzamos el ejercicio muy bien, y tenemos que terminar el balance con las cifras de la última fase, pero ha habido buenos precios, sobre todo porque la producción de Italia ha bajado en torno a un 30%, lo que ha ayudado a mantener una media alta”.

At Naturitalia they are working with seedless SNFL varieties through one of their partner cooperatives, concentrating the production in Puglia and at the same time, they still have seeded grapes such as Italia and Victoria to cover the domestic demand, where cultural tradition continues to play an important role.”

Another interesting project, in this case aimed exclusively at the Italian market, along with their neighbours, Switzerland and Austria, is a line of non-chilled fruit, which is marketed in 3 or 4 days and that will start up in July. The value of this range lies in the high quality of the fruit, which is harvested at the perfect moment of ripening to offer unbeatable flavour and aroma. To enhance this added value, they have chosen containers prepared with a type of wood used many years ago on the market.

The second-degree cooperative divides the campaign up into four seasons, with the main ones being winter and summer. The start of the first part, with the kiwi as its main produce, has been quite positive in general. “We started off the year very well and we have yet to finish the balance sheet with the figures from the last phase, but the prices have been good, particularly because the Italian production has dropped by around 30%, which has helped to maintain a high average.”

Inma lleva a gala ser una mujer de pueblo

A veces, por las interrupciones, no me acuerdo de lo que le he preguntado, pero ella no pierde el hilo de nuestra conversación y me lo recuerda. No era mi intención, pero oigo sus conversaciones y me doy cuenta de que mucha gente ha depositado su confianza en ella, y al mismo tiempo es una persona agradecida.

A los 11 años ya trabajaba en el almacén familiar cortando uva. Eran otros tiempos, en los que la autoridad paterna no se ponía en entredicho, y por eso le tocó estudiar el Bachiller por la noche y trabajar por el día.

Nos cuesta comenzar a hablar porque sus llamadas se suceden una tras otra (mi grabadora registra más de 30 cortes). En el instante en que cuelga el móvil, vuelve a sonar. Sus conversaciones me confirman que Inma posee una alta inteligencia emocional.

Uf, si las ondas electromagnéticas del teléfono afectan al cerebro, usted lo debe tener… Todos hablamos mucho, pero esto no lo había visto nunca. Es como si le entrara el subidón con cada venta.

Ja, ja, debo ser la evidencia científica de que no pasa nada porque yo me siento de maravilla. Mi trabajo me hace absolutamente feliz, me encanta y disfruto muchísimo. No lo entendería de otra manera.

Le soy sincera, no sé cómo es capaz de retener todo lo que le han dicho. Si dependiera de mí, los envíos se harían de forma equivocada, se lo aseguro.

Mi vida ha transcurrido en este negocio, conozco todos los entresijos. Son muchos años y puedo presumir de tener amigos en el sector, amigos que confiaron en mí y me echaron una mano cuando los necesité (Alex y Emilio) y de eso no hace tanto. Mi padre murió en 2009 y en ese mismo momento se rompió la relación con una cadena con la que trabajábamos y tuvimos que restructurar todo desde cero. ¿Cómo lleva lo de trabajar con su marido?

Después de tantos años, puedo afirmar que

Sí, con la anterior directiva era vocal y ahora estoy a cargo de la secretaría. Claro que deberíamos ser más. ¿Qué le han parecido las movilizaciones feministas de los últimos tiempos?

Me parecen muy bien. Creo que hemos vuelto a poner sobre la mesa muchos de los problemas que vivimos las mujeres. Hemos conseguido muchas cosas, pero si somos la mitad de la población, todavía nos queda mucho camino por andar porque no estamos representadas en esta proporción. Hace muchos años que hay mujeres preparadas para determinados trabajos que sólo hacían los hombres. Los altos ejecutivos, casi siempre han sido hombres y las universidades llevan años con mujeres muy preparadas. Y en este sector, ni le cuento… a veces se percibe un machismo latente y muy bien disimulado.

A principios de mes estuve en el concierto de Ara Malikian, en Valencia. También solemos escaparnos a Madrid para ver algún espectáculo en la Gran Vía, aunque más en invierno.

Supongo que en algún momento desconecta y que esto no continúa así los fines de semana, ¿o tal vez entre semana se dedica un tiempo a si misma?

Hay una etapa muy dura, la infancia. Mi hija se me ha dormido en un pallet mientras yo estaba en el almacén y cuando empezó a darse cuenta de las cosas, me recriminó que nunca fuera al colegio o a las excursiones,

Suelo ir con asiduidad al gimnasio y practico body combat, aunque ahora llevo un tiempo que lo he dejado, pero lo retomo siempre. En los pueblos hay una costumbre muy arraigada de hacer rutas caminando entre un pueblo y otro y aquí la naturaleza es una maravilla.

Los sábados de campaña son un poco convulsos, pero el domingo me distancio y empiezo la mañana leyendo dos periódicos en papel mientras desayuno. Y si quiero relajarme de verdad, mi terapia es hacer repostería o pasear en bicicleta por la playa.

Nuestras vacaciones suelen ser casi siempre del mismo modo: el pueblo impera. Y le explico, las fiestas de aquí y de los pueblos de los alrededores son a mediados de agosto y mis hijos, de 25 y 17, disfrutan mucho y los amigos van y vienen. Pero antes de que empiece el jolgorio, solemos hacer una escapada por Europa o por el norte de España.

Nuestra conversación acaba e Inma me pide que la espere. En un pispás, se cambia la ropa de vestir por un vaquero, se pone plana y se dirige a tomar las riendas del almacén.

A self-made woman

Extrovert, lively and a whirlwind. This is the best description of this slight woman. Inma Torregrosa, an erupting volcano. I met up with her in the middle of the campaign and her telephone did not stop ringing. She sells and sells, taking on any problems in her stride.

At times, due to the interruptions, I cannot remember what I have asked her, but she never loses the thread of our conversation and reminds me of what I have said. Although unintentionally, I hear her conversations and I realise that many people have placed their trust in her and, at the same time, I see that she is a grateful person.

She was already working in the family warehouse cutting grapes when she was 11 years old. They were different times, when paternal authority was not called into question, and this was the reason she had to study for her Baccalaureate at night and work during the day.

It was difficult to start talking because her calls were nonstop (my recorder shows over 30 interruptions).

The moment she hangs up, her mobile phone starts ringing again. Through her conversations I can see that Inma has a high level of emotional intelligence.

Well, if the telephone’s electromagnetic waves affect the brain, yours must be… We all talk a lot, but I’ve never seen this before. It’s as if you get a high with each sale.

Ha, ha, I must be the scientific evidence that it’s not true, because I feel great. My work makes me completely happy; I love it and enjoy it all the time. I would not understand it in any other way.

My father died in 2009 and it was at about that time that the trade relationship with a chain we were working with broke down and we had to rebuild everything from zero.

How do you manage working alongside your husband?

After so many years, I can say that I have learned to modulate my worries about the business so that I don’t take them home with me. However, we have a strange link, at a decisive moment or in the middle of a negotiation, he immediately knows what I am thinking and vice versa.

Are you the only woman on the executive of the National Persimmon Association?

Yes, with the previous executive I was a member and

now I am in charge of the secretary. Obviously there should be more of us.

How do you feel about the recent feminist movement?

I think it is very good. I think that we have brought back to the table many of the problems we experience as women. We have achieved many things, but if we make up half of the population, we still have a long way to go because we are not represented in this proportion. Without even mentioning the family burdens that continue to weigh us down or gender-related violence.

I believe that women together are unstoppable and, unlike what men have made us believe, we can be great friends.

Well, at least in the government that has just been formed we are represented.

For many years now there have been women who had been trained for certain jobs that only men did. Top executives are almost always men and the universities have had very well trained women for years. And in this sector, it goes without saying… sometimes you can feel a latent, very well hidden, male chauvinism.

I suppose that at some point you disconnect and that this doesn’t continue in the same way over the weekends, or perhaps you spends some time on yourself during the week?

I assiduously go to the gym and I do body combat, although I haven’t been recently, I always go back to it.

In villages there is a deep-rooted tradition of walking from one village to the next, and around here the countryside is amazing.

What was your last outing?

At the beginning of the month I went to a concert by Ara Malikian in Valencia. We also usually get away to Madrid to see a show or two on the Gran Vía, although this is more frequent in the winter.

If you were always working, how did you manage with your children?

Childhood is a very hard phase. My daughter slept on a pallet while I was in the warehouse and when she started taking notice of things, she told me off for never going to her school or on school trips, as my mother took care of these things. This is a time when you feel that you have been a bad mother. But you get over it.

How do you spend your summers?

Usually our holidays are almost always the same: the village reigns supreme. The fiestas here and in the surrounding villages take place in the middle of August and my children, who are 25 and 17, enjoy them and their friends come and go. But before the revelry begins, we usually take a break in Europe or in northern Spain.

Our conversation ends and Inma asks me to wait for her. In two seconds she has changed from her smart clothing into jeans; she puts flat shoes on and goes to take over the reins of the warehouse.

Saturdays during the campaign are very busy, but on Sundays I distance myself from it all and I start the morning by reading two hard copy newspapers while I have my breakfast. And if I really want to relax, my therapy is baking or riding my bicycle along the beach.

But you are also a social network fan Oh, of course I am, but a hard copy of a newspaper is so much nicer to read. You have to keep up with the times; I learn from the people around me because I don’t mind asking. Thanks to technology, now we can sell by Whatsapp, by email, on LinkedIn.
