Expolevante dobla su espacio En su XIV edición habrá 8.000 metros de superficie y 250 estands Inauguración el 18 de abril a las 12:00h y que solo en 2017 creció en más de 200 Has, según confirmó la delegada del Gobierno de la Junta de Andalucía, Gracia Fernández, durante la presentación del evento.

Este ‘escaparate’ del motor económico de la provincia se ha convertido en un “referente a nivel nacional e internacional” y prueba de ello son sus cifras: en 2016 se registraron 40.000 visitantes, y en ésta, su XIV edición, la organización ha tenido que duplicar el espacio disponible para atender la demanda de empresas que quieren tener presencia en el certamen, 130 en total.

Espacios diferenciados

urgió en los años “90 y desde entonces ha pasado de contar con apenas una veintena de estands a tener 250 en la edición que abrirá sus puertas del 18 al 20 de abril en el Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Campohermoso. El dinamismo de Expolevante ha ido de la mano del crecimiento de un sector pujante, el agrícola, que actualmente suma 9.058 hectáreas en la comarca (el 62,8% en Níjar, con 5.689 Has),

La feria contará este año con 8.000 m² de superficie, distribuidos en dos espacios: un pabellón interior de 4.200 metros con 160 expositores, y otro exterior con una carpa de 1.575 metros y 66 expositores, además de la zona motor (maquinaria agrícola y vehículos comerciales), con 3.800 metros y 22 estands más.

A todo ello se suma la sala de conferencias y dos aulas, donde se podrán seguir ponencias con temas de interés y plena actualidad para el sector, y en las que las empresas que lo soliciten podrán realizar charlas o actividades formativas.

La feria se inaugurará el próximo 18 de abril a las 12:00h y estará abierta de 11:00h a 21:00h hasta el 20 de abril.

A trade fair for farmers The Mayoress of Níjar recalled the beginnings of Expolevante, 28 years ago, an initiative by the Asociación Expositora de Campohermoso, which is taking part in the organisation of this edition. “In 1990 the trade fair was small and the companies who came to it were in full contact with the farmers; it was a meeting point, an aspect that continues to be characteristic of Expolevante and one of its differentiating elements.” Maintaining this premise, the trade fair now strives to move forward towards the new 2.0 model that represents Nijar, with a “more ecological, more technologically advanced agriculture, with deeply established commercial processes, which allow it to go increasingly further on markets and in profitability.”

erónimo Maldonado es uno de esos agricultores conocidos en el sector por su buen hacer. Ubicado en Albuñol (Granada), se maneja con soltura en el cultivo del tomate cherry, y su amplia experiencia le ha llevado a ser un especialista en la materia. Fruit Today se reunió con él en su finca de 8.000 m² para conocer de primera mano sus impresiones sobre la variedad Zirconyta, de Seminis.

El buen estado del cultivo, plantado el 20 de septiembre con portainjertos Dynafort, hablaba por sí solo: frutos homogéneos, consistentes, con un gran color y buen sabor, en una planta en perfecto estado después de haber pasado los rigores del invierno. Y otras ventajas a tener en cuenta, como indicó el productor, es su “aguante en planta sin rajado, que nos beneficia en materia de precios porque podemos esperar a cortar cuando más nos interesa, y el hecho de que nunca se pase de calibre” (un aspecto penalizado en precios por algunas empresas comer10 Fruittoday

cializadoras). “Siempre está entre 25-30 mm”.

En su caso, Jerónimo ha optado por recolectar de noviembre a mayo “pero podría estar todo el verano” (no lo hace por la entrada en producción de otros países competidores, que hace descender la rentabilidad a nivel general).

El de este agricultor es solo un ejemplo de la buena andadura que está teniendo Zirconyta en su primer año comercial. “En la Costa de Granada está funcionando muy bien, especialmente en empresas líderes en el segmento, las más exigentes”, asegura Daniel Ferreira, responsable comercial de Seminis en Málaga y Granada. Su dureza permite una buena poscosecha y que el producto viaje sin problemas, llegando en perfectas condiciones a su destino. Su sabor y calibre comercial completan las ventajas de una variedad que se enmarca en el denominado Commodity Premium y que cuenta con características idóneas para dirigirse a cualquier mercado.

Zirconyta, star cherry tomatoes

The latest variety from Seminis is convincing both farmers and specialist companies in its first year on the market Jerónimo Maldonado is one of these farmers, well-known in the sector for his good work.

Located in Albuñol (Granada), he is confident in his cherry tomatoes crops and his wide experience has led him to be a specialist on the subject. Fruit Today met up with him on his 8,000 m² farm to discover his impressions firsthand about the Zirconyta variety from Seminis. The good condition of the crop, planted on the 20th of September with Dynafort rootstock, speaks for itself: homogenous, consistent fruit, with great colour and good flavour, on a plant in perfect conditions after surviving the harsh winter.

And other advantages to be taken into account, as indicated by the producer, are its “endurance on the plant without splitting, which benefits us regarding prices because we can expect to cut when it interests us most and the fact that they never grow too large” (an aspect that is penalised in price by some marketing companies). “They are always between 25-30 mm.” Jerónimo has decided to harvest from November to May, “but this could be done throughout the summer” (he doesn’t do this due to other competitor countries coming into production, meaning that, in general, the profitability drops).

This farmer is just one example of the good results being obtained by Zirconyta in its first year on the market. “On the Granada Coast it is working very well, particularly in the leading companies in the segment, which are the most demanding ones,” according to Daniel Ferreira, sales manager of Seminis in Malaga and Granada. Its hardiness allows a good post-harvest along with the fact that the produce travels without any difficulties, arriving at its destination in perfect conditions. Its flavour and commercial calibre complete the advantages of a variety that is framed within the so-called Commodity Premium and that has the correct characteristics for any market.

Pomo Rosa conquista al Levante

Un grupo de productores se ha especializado en la gama Pomo Rosa de Isi Sementi

a casa de semillas italiana participa en Expolevante con un stand propio junto a su distribuidor Myseeds donde mostrará las variedades que integran su línea Pomo Rosa, Rosalinda F1 (un rosa aromático, de frutos consistentes y uniformes) y Rosamunda F1 (rosa tipo Corazón de Buey de sabor dulce y aspecto muy atractivo), y otras como el tomate ramo ISI 62133, el pera ISI 52055 y toda su gama de cherry, que incluye los tipos redondo y pera en distintos colores (rojo, naranja, amarillo…).

La firma, ya muy conocida en la zona principalmente por su buen hacer en tomate rosa, está cosechando buenos resultados con su portfolio de tomate. “Hay un grupo de agricultores que se ha especializado en el cultivo de Pomo Rosa tanto en Almería como en los municipios levantinos de Lorca y Benicarló”, explica el Sales Manager Albert Alcón. Así, en la primera es más común Rosamunda F1, y en las dos últimas Rosalinda F1. El denominador común es la búsqueda de tomates “sabrosos y muy atractivos visualmente”.

También funcionan muy bien sus tomates ramo y pera. El primero, ISI 62133, es un larga vida cuyo sabor destaca por encima de la media en su segmento. La variedad cuenta con un color excelente, además de no tener problemas de cracking ni manchado, y posee un nivel muy alto de resistencias. Por su parte, el pera ISI 52055 tiene buen sabor y es idóneo para ciclos cortos en Almería por su precocidad y buen cuaje en condiciones de altas temperaturas, permitiendo obtener precios más altos.

variedades que además tengan un alto nivel de resistencias (algo a tener en cuenta por los agricultores ecológicos) y, favorecer una mayor sostenibilidad.

No solo tomate Junto a su producto estrella, Isi Sementi está a punto de introducir una nueva línea de producto en Almería, el calabacín. “Hemos estado realizando ensayos precomerciales con la variedad ISI 76143 y empezaremos a comercializarla en agosto”.

The Italian seed company is in Expolevante with its own stand alongside its distributor, Myseeds, where it will show the varieties that make up its Pomo Rosa line: Rosalinda F1 (an aromatic pink plant, with consistent, uniform fruit), Rosamunda F1 (Beefsteak type pink tomato, with a sweet flavour and a very attractive appearance) and others such as the vine tomato ISI 62133, the pear tomato ISI 52055 and its entire cherry tomato range, which includes the round and pear types in different colours (red, orange, yellow…).

The company, already very well known in the area, mainly due to its good work in pink tomatoes, is harvesting good results with its tomato portfolio. “There is a group of farmers who have specialised in the growing of Pomo Rosa both in Almeria and in the Levant regions of Lorca and Benicarló,” explains Sales Manager Albert Alcón. Therefore, in the former Rosamunda F1 is more popular, whereas in the latter two regions, Rosalinda F1 is more common. The common denominator is the search for tomatoes that are “tasty and visually very attractive.”

The company’s vine and pear tomatoes also work very well. The former, ISI 62133, is a longlife tomato the flavour of which stands out above the average in its segment. The variety has an excellent colour, as well as not having cracking or spotting problems and it has a very high resistance level. On the other hand, the pear tomato ISI 52055 has a good flavour and it is suitable for short cycles in Almeria due to its early ripening and good setting in high temperature conditions, allowing higher prices to be obtained.

With flavour as its flagship, the seed company is focusing on developing new varieties that also have a high resistance level (something to be taken into account by ecological farmers) and that encourage greater sustainability.

Not only tomatoes Alongside its star product, Isi Sementi is about to introduce a new product line in Almeria: courgettes. “We have been carrying out premarketing trials with the ISIS 76143 variety and we will begin marketing it in August.”

¿Sin solución para el melón?

El cultivo sigue descendiendo en Almería, mientras la sandía corre el riesgo de morir de éxito

Lo que está pasando con el Galia en Almería es un problema.

La gente ha dejado de consumir”. Al hablar con cualquier casa de semillas sobre la evolución del melón en los últimos años en la provincia, la respuesta se repite. La falta de sabor y ‘comida’ (el término con el que se conoce coloquialmente a la sensación que deja en boca la fruta al morderla), son el principal obstáculo que han encontrado los productores. Y aunque las obtentoras intentan hacerle frente, está claro que aún no han sabido dar con la clave. El mercado prácticamente se ha perdido, tanto en Galia como en Amarillo.

El Cantaloup podría seguir sus pasos, y el Piel de Sapo es el único que se ‘salva’, por así decirlo, ya que sigue teniendo su reducto tradicional en la zona más occidental del Poniente almeriense. No se trata de una impresión, es una realidad constatada por cifras. Según la consejería de Agricultura, este año la superficie de cultivo de melón seguirá disminuyendo y descenderá un 8% respecto al ejercicio anterior, pasando de 2.220 hectáreas a 2.042. A nivel de volumen, en 2016/17 se superaron las 93.500 toneladas, un 3% menos que en la campaña precedente, con un valor comercial de 39,5 millones de euros, y este año volveremos a ver un nuevo descenso a tenor del descenso de la superficie cultivada.

La falta de sabor y ‘comida’, principales escollos del melón

Pero si esa es la cruz, la cara de la moneda en las frutas de agua sigue siendo la sandía. El gran trabajo llevado a cabo por el sector, con

variedades de calidad y sabor que no defraudan, y el corte en el momento idóneo, han supuesto un espaldarazo para esta fruta de verano que vive un momento ‘dulce’ desde hace varias campañas. Este año la superficie dedicada al cultivo se ha incrementado un 3% en Almería, pasando de 8.940 hectáreas a 9.208. En el ejercicio 2016/17, se superaron las 558.000 toneladas de producción, un 4,8% más que la campaña precedente, con un valor comercial de más de 170 millones de euros.

Inicio del fin del New Delhi En 2013 el campo almeriense se sobresaltó ante la aparición de un nuevo virus, el ToLCNDV o ‘Nueva Delhi’, que puso en jaque primero al calabacín y luego a otras cucurbitáceas como el melón. En estos años, aunque han extendido herramientas de prevención para evitar su irrupción en las fincas, muchos agricultores han optado por cultivos más ‘seguros’. De forma paralela las casas de semillas han puesto todos sus esfuerzos en encontrar resistencias para lograr que el virus sea solo un mal recuerdo. La novedad podría traerla Semillas Fitó. La firma ha encontrado una fuente de resistencia que servirá de base para realizar los primeros ensayos en la próxima campaña, y todo apunta a que un par de años puedan tener variedades comerciales con la citada característica.

Según el informe Alimentación en España 2017 elaborado por Mercasa, en 2016 el consumo de sandía en los hogares ascendió a 380,7 millones de kg y 8,7 kg per cápita, frente a los 370,3 mill. kg y 8,4 kg per cápita del melón. En conjunto, ambas coparon el 10,7% del gasto total en frutas frescas (15,1 € por persona).

Pero ojo, conviene no lanzar las campanas al vuelo. Urge una planificación detallada si el sector no quiere verse a abocado a una ‘burbuja’ que explote tirando por tierra todos los avances realizados en la última década. El año pasado las empresas vieron cómo caían en picado las cotizaciones debido al incremento de la superficie y el solapamiento de producciones derivado de los malos cuajes.

The crop continues to drop in Almeria, while watermelon runs the risk of dying from success “What is happening with the Galia in Almeria is a problem. People have stopped eating it.” When talking to any seed company about the melon evolution in the province in recent years, the answer is always the same.

The lack of flavour and ‘bite’ (the term used colloquially for the feeling the fruit leaves in the mouth when biting it), are the main obstacles found by producers. And although the breeders are trying to cope with this, it is obvious that they have not yet found the key. The market has virtually been lost, both with Galia and Yellow Melon. The Cantaloupe could follow in their footsteps and the Piel de Sapo is the only one that is ‘saving itself’, so to speak, since it continues to have its traditional stronghold in the westernmost area of the Poniente Ameriense. It is not just an impression, it is a reality that is confirmed by figures. According to the Department of Agriculture, this year the melon crop surface area will continue to decrease and it will drop by 8% compared to the previous year, going from 2,220 hectares to 2,042. Regarding the volume, in 2016/17, there was a production of over 93,500 tonnes, 3% less than in the preceding campaign, with a commercial value of 39.5 million euros and this year once again, we will see a new drop in the cultivated surface area.

But if this is one side of the coin, the other side in water fruits continues to be the watermelon. The important work carried out by the sector, with varieties containing

quality and flavour that do not disappoint, and cutting at the correct moment, has meant a boost for this summer fruit that has been experiencing a ‘sweet’ moment during the past few campaigns. This year the surface area devoted to the crop has increased by 3% in Almeria, going from 8,940 hectares to 9,208. In the year of 2016/17, there was a production of over 558,000 tonnes, 4.8% more than in the preceding campaign, with a commercial value of over 170 million euros.

All the consumption data ratifies the dominance of watermelons over melons. According to the Food in Spain 2017 report prepared by Mercasa, in 2016 watermelon consumption in households rose to 380.7 million kg and 8.7 kg per capita, compared to the 370.3 million kg and 8.4 kg per capita reached by melons. All in all, both fruits took on 10.7% of the total spending in fresh fruit (€ 15.1 per person).

But be warned, we shouldn’t start rejoicing yet. A detailed planning schedule is urgently needed if the sector does not want to commit itself to a ‘bubble’ that could explode, destroying all the progress made over the past decade. Last year, companies saw how prices plummeted due to the increase in surface area and the overlapping of productions caused by bad setting. With such a wake-up call, will the companies put the brakes on in time?

n los últimos años hemos asistido a un “boom” de la sandía motivado, en gran parte, por la excepcional calidad que se ha alcanzado en esta fruta. Marcas como Caparrós Premium son una de las banderas de este momento dulce que atraviesa el sector, y la duda ahora es hasta cuándo podrá seguir creciendo. Although it is already very consolidated on the market as a reference for quality and flavour (it is harvested at its perfect point of ripeness with high quality standards and it stands out due to its sweetness and texture), during this new campaign, promotional activities will continue, always linked to fruit and vegetable consumption as a basis of a healthy diet. “In addition to its flavour and sweetness, consumers are increasingly opting for this seedless variety as it is a source of energy and vitamins.” Aware of the importance today’s society gives to all healthrelated issues, the company is developing trials to analyse the citrulline content of its watermelons.

In addition to this, its important commitment to innovation continues, with its participation in four Task Forces.

Alongside watermelon in the fresh produce area, Caparrós also has produce from the pre-prepared and pre-cooked ranges such as gazpachos made from watermelon, Lobello and Raf cherry pear tomatoes that are showing good results due to their high quality and an “exceptional and different” flavour and texture”.

Although the company is immersed in the summer campaign, it has not lost sight of the following year.

ozo Sur es la mayor productora de sandía de España con unos 55 millones de kilos anuales y 800 Has de producción, casi todas en Murcia. La situación actual, comenta Juan López, gerente de la firma, es la de un mercado “maduro” que se ha “saturado” por el crecimiento a doble dígito que ha tenido el consumo de sandía en los últimos 7 años. Una evolución positiva motivada, en primer lugar, por el incremento de la calidad del producto, pero que ahora amenaza con echar por tierra los precios si los propios operadores no toman cartas en el asunto. Desde Pozo Sur son conscientes, y por eso han decidido levantar el pie del acelerador y prevén reducir su producción un 15% esta campaña. Y es que en el ejercicio pasado se vieron obligados a “ser consecuentes y defender el género”. Lo hicieron labrando las producciones sobrantes y quitando del mercado producto porque “sobraron 4.000 hectáreas en la Unión Europea y los precios fueron desastrosos”.

“Todo lo que pase de 20.000 hectáreas sobra en el mercado europeo”, asegura en relación a la sandía. Por ello es necesario mirar hacia nuevos destinos fuera de las fronteras comunitarias. En su caso, siguen tocando “nuevas puertas”, pero el gran peso de su exportación (95%) se queda en los países-UE. Encontrar nuevos nichos no es tarea fácil.

“Tanto Italia como Grecia están apostando fuerte por la sandía”, Hungría es competencia desde agosto y Turquía, aunque es un

gran productor, también consume muchísimo (unos 60 kg per cápita), por lo que su influencia sobre las producciones españolas es menor, a pesar de coincidir en fechas.

They did this by farming the surplus productions and removing produce from the market because “there was an excess of 4,000 hectares in the European Union and the prices were catastrophic.”

“Anything over 20,000 hectares is surplus on the European market,” he states regarding watermelons.

For this reason, new destinations outside the

community borders need to be found. In the company’s case, they continue to knock on “new doors,” but the majority of their exports (95%) remain in EU countries.

Finding new niches is not an easy task. “Both Italy and Greece are showing an important commitment to watermelons;” Hungary is a competitor from August onwards and Turkey, although it is an important producer, also consumes a very large amount (around 60 kg per capita), therefore its influence on Spanish productions is not as important, in spite of the fact that the dates coincide.

Investment For the campaign that is beginning (the first harvests are planned for between the 20-25th of April), Pozo Sur has invested € 180,000 in machinery: laser labelling machines, calibrators and palletising machines that renew their equipment and optimise the work flow.

Everything required to continue leading a segment in which its main asset continues to be, as ever, “flavour, flavour and flavour” with the brand names of Mario and Mario Único.

l pasado mes de febrero, Frutas y Verduras El Monarca cambió de sede para trasladarse a unas instalaciones propias en las que comienza una nueva etapa, redimensionando el espacio para adaptarse a las necesidades que impone su crecimiento continuo y añadiendo el manipulado de forma directa a su línea de trabajo.

La firma murciana cerró la campaña pasada con 13 millones de kilos de melón piel de sapo y 4 millones de amarillo, y en este ejercicio espera, al menos, mantener el mismo nivel de producción, una tarea que se complica para todo el sector debido a la escasez de agua. “Estamos creciendo en número de clientes, pero de momento mantenemos la superficie en 500 ha porque no hay agua suficiente”.

Solo así es posible cumplir los programas de forma puntual, abasteciendo a sus clientes desde mayo a octubre. Y es que, como señala Conesa, “No solo somos comercializadores. Somos productores con marca propia y calidad”.

In this way, they can find out exactly the specific requirements of the crop and, therefore, programme the irrigation, preventing water wastage. The company’s Quality Assurance Manager, Charo Conesa, adds that they keep the phenological cycle in mind when deciding when and how to water the crops. This is the only way to meet the programmes promptly, supplying their customers from May to October. And the fact is that, as Conesa indicates: “We are not only marketers. We are producers with our own brand and quality.”

The campaign starts in Murcia, with the first melons under glass and it then moves on to the open air fields in the following months and finally, to CastillaLa Mancha. This year, alongside the traditional varieties there will be other, new ones that must have their adaptation studied. “We are very conscious of all the elements that arise, and when deciding on a new material, the main criterion is always the flavour. The Brix are important: we don’t select anything below 12-13 degrees, but this is not enough. They must be tasty, good to eat…”

Un futuro “interesante” para la sandía Coprohníjar espera una buena campaña. Ya tiene 10 Has ‘eco’ y 50 en reconversión

a climatología ha complicado los cuajes en el Levante almeriense, pero en líneas generales Coprohníjar espera una buena campaña con volúmenes similares a los de 2017, aproximadamente 15 millones de kilos y una extensión ligeramente superior, pasando de 200 a más de 210 hectáreas, 10 de ellas en ecológico. Solo la sandía mini baja en volumen, probablemente entre un 10-15%, debido a un problema de escasez de semilla.

Sobre el ‘eco’, una de sus líneas estratégicas (esperan que suponga el 20% de su producción hortofrutícola total en menos de dos años), el presidente Juan Segura avanza que ya tienen 10 Has de sandía en producción y otras 50 en proceso de reconversión.

Por lo demás mantienen una línea continuista, fieles a las variedades que les están aportando seguridad en materia de calidad: Red Jasper para sandía gorda y Precious Petit para la mini, comercializadas a través de Anecoop, de la que son socios, bajo la marca Bouquet.

Presencia en Expolevante La firma nijareña no ha querido faltar a la XIV edición de Expolevante que se celebra entre el 18 y 20 de abril. Una cita que se produce cuando están en plena campaña de sandía (la recolección empieza sobre el 20 de abril y se alargará hasta final de junio).

Y es que esta feria, además de suponer un punto de encuentro con los socios, está creciendo a marchas forzadas. “Este año se va a duplicar la superficie, es una muy buena noticia”.

And the fact is that this trade fair, in addition to meaning a meeting place for the members, is growing at an incredible rate. “This year the surface area is going to double, which is very good news.”

n esta campaña de sandía la almeriense Agrícola Navarro de Haro sigue una línea continuista con más de 700 hectáreas de cultivo y una producción estimada de 50 millones de kilos entre la negra sin semillas Fashion, la blanca sin semilla (variedad Boston F1) y mini (Pre-

mium), que copa ya el 25% de su producción total de sandía. Desde abril y hasta octubre, comercializarán esta fruta de verano en el mercado nacional (principalmente en mercas y supermercados) e internacional, ambos con la misma cuota (50%) y unas exigencias similares en cuanto a requisitos (calibre aparte). El consumidor europeo se ha acostumbrado a que la sandía que compra sea, en la inmensa mayoría de los casos, de gran calidad, un camino que transita Agrícola Navarro de Haro desde sus inicios. “Nuestro objetivo es siempre superarnos en materia de calidad. During the handling phase, the fruit is also ‘cosseted’ and one of the latest changes that has been introduced is that of installing a new weight gauging line to streamline the work and to fine tune it to the maximum. “Previously the classification was by volume, and with this new system we have achieved greater accuracy, a highly positive aspect for the supermarkets, which ask us to adapt to certain sizes.”

Not just watermelons One of the most important references in the company’s portfolio, after watermelons, is the tomato.

They also have iceberg lettuce, which continue to increase (in the 2017/18 campaign they will reach 12 million heads). But that is not all; every 18 months a new reference is added to their range. In 2015, they incorporated courgettes; last year, broccoli and cauliflowers, and in the near future they will start marketing aloe vera, a line that they have started working as an ecological crop.

With almost 75 years of experience supporting quality, CASI, the reference cooperative in the sector, is showing its status of guarantee of flavour and dedication to its customers, by stating the many qualities that its ‘Princess’ watermelon yields.

For Manuel Segura, sales manager of the company from Almeria, the expectations for this new concept are very high, “both for the guarantees that we offer, and for the many advantages in size, flavour and colour that only ‘Princess’ can guarantee”.

CASI is launching its watermelon campaign with this new line, where the level of experience that it has reached with ‘Reina de CASI’ stands out, “a fruit that is consolidated on the market and a reference amongst our customers who are familiar with the flavour and quality of our watermelons”, Segura affirms.

In this campaign CASI’s watermelon production will increase by around 15%, meaning around 300 hectares devoted to watermelons, a specific bid by the veteran cooperative with regard to this summer fruit. As with the ‘Reina de CASI’, ‘Princess’ watermelons are supervised in the fields by a specialised Technical Department during their entire cycle; likewise, a team of expert cutters determine the perfect moment of ripeness for their harvesting in order cover the most demanding of consumer www.casi.es expectations.

n esta campaña HM.Clause desembarca en Castilla-La Mancha con un importante lanzamiento para ciclo medio que completa la gama de piel de sapo en la zona. La variedad, denominada Valeriano (CLX MPN07), se suma a Valdivieso y Valeoso, ofreciendo a los productores un material muy plástico (se adapta a todo tipo de terrenos, tanto arcillosos como arenosos, ideal para suelos pobres y sobreexplotados) y productivo (presenta los mismos rendimientos en distintas zonas de la región).

Desde la casa de semillas recomiendan hacer los trasplantes desde mediados de mayo a final de junio, y señalan, entre sus características, la rusticidad de la planta, con un buen sistema radicular y un buen nivel de resistencias, principalmente IR a oidio y pulgón. El fruto, uniforme y con un atractivo escriturado longitudinal, oscila entre los 3,5-3,8 kilos, y su aroma y sabor son los del melón más tradicional.

In Murcia, they have the references Valverde F1, and Valdivieso F1, followed by Valiente F1, another flagship in the area, and Valderas F1. But Clause has not stopped there and currently it is carrying out large-scale testing on three new varieties for the area: CLX MPO21, a promising piel de sapo for early harvesting; a semi-long life Galia for medium and late planting, CLX MGP22; and a yellow melon for April planting, CLX MCE399.

Alongside Clause’s melon portfolio, the good results produced by its first watermelon variety, Casilda F1, are worth mentioning. l gerente de la cooperativa murciana Gregal, Felipe López, asevera que “al representar al eslabón más débil de la cadena, es imprescindible crear un sector productor fuerte y unido, ya que la distribución así lo hace. Nuestra fortaleza reside en una producción con mayor investigación y tecnológicamente más avanzada, en superar el difícil problema del agua y en abordar de modo conjunto muchos de los retos que el futuro nos depara.”

El campo de ensayos de transferencia tecnológica de El Mirador, participado también por otras dos cooperativas del Campo de Cartagena , es una muestra de cómo se puede avanzar de manera conjunta en innovación, investigación y transferencia tecnológica a los socios. Así como la Cátedra de Agricultura Sostenible de la Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena.

En este mismo orden de cosas, el ejecutivo manifiesta que “hay que desvincular la política de las decisiones a adoptar en materia de agua, conseguir soluciones de futuro y resolver para siempre el déficit hídrico. En concreto, en el Campo de Cartagena, se ha criminalizado al sector agrícola acusándolo injustamente por una parte de la sociedad, y en realidad, estamos ofreciendo soluciones viables para la coexistencia de la actividad agraria con el respecto por el Medio Ambiente. La agricultura no representa el problema sino la solución y prueba de ello son las numerosas certificaciones con las que contamos, fruto de estrictas auditorias, renovadas periódicamente.”

Las primeras sensaciones que manejan los operadores de melón es que será una campaña con un buen volumen, tal y como se desprende de los datos que aportan los semilleros. Esta misma premisa se confirma desde Gregal: “Nuestros clientes pueden estar tranquilos porque tendrán el suministro garantizado”.

En esta cucurbitácea, la cooperativa de Torre Pacheco, representa uno de los grandes operadores en origen, con un volumen que llega a unos 40 millones de kilos en una campaña relativamente corta. Galia, Amarillo, Cantaloup y Piel de Sapo, son por este orden las variedades de mayor peso.

“Habrá producto suficiente, pero será necesario que en la quincena que se produce una gran concentración de oferta podamos contar con el clima favorable en países de destino para dar salida al producto,” matiza López.

Además de sus marcas clásicas para este producto (Gregal, Bonasol, Dulme y Calor) destaca la de más reciente incorporación, Memphis, una insignia que lleva escasamente dos años y que representa una variedad de Cantaloup registrada por sólo dos empresas de la zona. “Se trata de un producto con muy buena evolución. Esta campaña habrá una mayor oferta porque el agricultor percibe que el manejo en campo es más sencillo que el Cantaloup tradicional, en almacén su tratamiento también es más fácil y tiene un estupendo reconocimiento por nuestros clientes” En cuanto a la filial inglesa que Gregal mantiene en el Reino Unido desde 1996, López se muestra expectante respecto a lo que las negociaciones finales del Brexit. Sin embargo, es contundente al hablar de la incertidumbre de cambio de la libra esterlina y la paulatina depreciación que sufre desde años atrás: “Algún día el sector debería darse cuenta de que tenemos la fuerza suficiente para trasladar este riego cambiario a la parte compradora, como ya hacemos con otros países periféricos a la UE. Si el resultado final es un Brexit duro, debe ser una oportunidad para trabajar en euros porque Inglaterra ya cuenta con su propio Banco Central para gestionar su moneda de la forma que considere oportuna.”

Our strength lies in production with greater research and more advanced technologically, in overcoming the problem of water and in tackling together many of the challenges that the future might bring.”

The ‘El Mirador’ technology transfer trial field, with participation by two other cooperatives from the Campo de Cartagena, is an example of how we can move forward together in innovation, research and technology transfer for members. And so is the Professorship for Sustainable Agriculture at the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena.

With this in mind, the executive states that “we must remove politics from the decisions to be taken on the subject of water, obtaining solutions for the future and resolving the water shortage once and for all. Specifically, in the Campo de Cartagena, a part of society has criminalised the agricultural sector, unfairly accusing it; and the truth is that we are offering feasible solutions for the coexistence of agricultural activities with respect for the Environment. Agriculture does not represent the problem, it is the solution and this can be seen by the many certificates we have, a result of strict audits, which are periodically renewed.”

The first impressions by melon operators are that it will be a campaign with a good volume, as can be deduced from the data provided from the seedbeds.

This same premise is confirmed from Gregal: “Our customers can remain calm, because their supply will be guaranteed.”

For this cucurbit species, the cooperative from Torre Pacheco represents one of the largest operators at source, with a volume that reaches around 40 million kilos in a relatively short campaign. Galia, Yellow, Cantaloupe and Piel de Sapo, in this order, are the most important varieties.

“There will be enough produce, but we need the weather to be favourable in destination countries during the fortnight when a large concentration of offer occurs in order to be able to offload the produce,” López qualifies.

In addi tion to its classic brands for this produce (Gregal, Bonasol, Dulme and Calor), Memphis, its most recent incorporation, stands out, a flagship that has only been on the market for two years and that represents a variety of Cantaloupe registered by only two companies in the area. “It is a product with a very good evolution. This campaign there will be greater offer because the farmers are seeing that they are easier to handle in the fields than traditional Cantaloupe melons and in the warehouses they are also easier to treat and they have incredible recognition amongst our customers.”

Regarding the English subsidiary that Gregal has had in the United Kingdom since 1996, his expectations are high with respect to the final Brexit negotiations. However, he is categorical when talking about the uncertainty in the Sterling exchange rate and the gradual depreciation it has been suffering from over the past few years: “One day the sector should realise that we are strong enough to pass this exchange rate risk on to the purchasing party, as we already do with other countries on the borders of the EU. If the final result is a hard Brexit, this should become an opportunity to work in euros because England already has its own Central Bank to manage its currency in the manner it deems appropriate.”

Dilatar el problema… ¿hasta cuándo?

Hasta el momento, y ya superadas las tres semanas de primavera, todo indica que los refranes castellanos “Por abril, aguas mil” y “Hasta el 40 de mayo no te quites el sayo”, se están cumpliendo.

sí las cosas, la cosecha de fruta hueso en las zonas más tempranas de la península, comenzará con un retraso que varía entre una semana o dos, dependiendo del área en cuestión.

“La situación no se arreglará hasta que no exista un plan incentivado de arranque”

Se inicia así una de las campañas que mayor expectación y preocupación ha generado. La sobreproducción que pesa sobre el sector, sigue existiendo.

Después de las pérdidas millonarias registradas en todas las comunidades, se ha vivido un invierno intenso en negociaciones entre los diversos actores y el Ministerio, que al final ha trascendido en el “Plan de Medidas para la Mejora del Sector de la Fruta Dulce.” Y dicho sea de paso, unas medidas que muchas fuentes califican como “meramente de relleno o burocráticas” porque que no afrontan el problema en su plenitud ya que se trata de un problema estructural y no de una dificultad coyuntural.

Es cierto, que muy al contrario de la campaña pasada, en la que se produjo un desbordamiento de oferta en origen desde el minuto uno, y sin los programas de las grandes cadenas en funcionamiento, la situación actual de la campaña se presenta

bajo otros parámetros completamente distintos:

Así, la fruta más temprana de Andalucía ha reducido sus volúmenes de manera significativa tras las fuertes rachas de viento que destrozaron invernaderos en las localidades onubenses de Lepe, Cartaya, etc. Las heladas de la tercera semana de febrero y las posteriores de marzo, prácticamente afectaron en todas zonas productoras desde Valencia, a Sevilla, diferentes localidades murcianas y comarcas de Lleida. En Extremadura, las lluvias se convirtieron en perennes durante casi tres semanas.

El presidente del Comité de Fruta de Hueso de la organización hortofrutícola Fepex, Antonio Chavero, matiza que “el plan es insuficiente porque no existen medidas eficaces que incidan en la campaña que estamos empezando, y lo que es evidente es que la sobreoferta de producto seguirá existiendo, aunque este año, será a partir de mediados de junio, debido a la climatología.”

Las palabras de Chavero son contundentes: “La situación no se arreglará hasta que no se de un plan incentivado para el arranque que elimine del mercado los 400 millones de kilos que sobran en los circuitos comercial en estos momentos.”

This is how one of the campaigns that has generated the greatest expectation and concern is starting off.

After the losses that ran into millions recorded in all the communities, there has been an intense winter of negotiations between the different agents and the Ministry, which finally has culminated in the “Plan for Steps to Improve the Sweet Fruit Sector.” And while on the subject, these are steps that many sources qualify as “just padding or bureaucratic” because they don’t fully face up to the problem, as it is a structural and not a circumstantial difficulty.

It is true that in contrast to the last campaign, where the offer at source overflowed from the very start, and without the programmes set up by the large chains in operation, the current situation of the campaign has some completely different parameters: Therefore, the earliest fruit in Andalusia has seen its volumes reduced significantly after the strong gusts of wind that destroyed greenhouses in Huelva’s towns of Lepe, Cartaya, etc. The frosts in the third week of February along with the ones in March affected virtually all the producing regions from Valencia to Seville, different towns in Murcia and regions in Lerida.

In Extremadura, it rained without letup for almost three weeks.

The chairman of the Stone Fruit Committee of the fruit and vegetable growing organisation, Fepex, Antonio Chavero, emphasises that “the plan is insufficient because there are no effective steps that come into play in the campaign that we are starting, and it is obvious that the oversupply in produce will continue to exist, although this year it will start in the middle of June, due to the weather conditions.”

Chavero’s words are categorical: “The situation will not be fixed until there is an incentive scheme for grubbing of trees that eliminates from the market the 400 million kilos surplus that are on the commercial circuits at the moment.”

ruit Today habló con el presidente de la sectorial de fruta de hueso de Asociafruit, José Rodríguez, quien nos quiso transmitir un mensaje de tranquilidad, no sin asumir que el problema de la sobreproducción persiste, y de momento, se dilata en el tiempo.

La estructura de la propiedad en Andalucía influyó en la toma rápida de decisiones de arranque

Andalucía es la comunidad, junto con algunas zonas de Murcia, que más pronto inicia su cosecha. Este año, las producciones extra tempranas bajo plásticos de Huelva han sido muy afectadas por el viento y la cosecha no será tan temprana. ¿Cómo ha sentado que otras las zonas productoras españolas no hayan acompañado a Andalucía en este arranque masivo de frutales?

Mi opinión es que la situación que aquí se ha dado, obedece básicamente a un tipo de estructura de propiedad: grandes explotaciones agrícolas bajo un mismo CIF. Cuando hay un año de pérdidas importantes como el pasado, éstas se acumulan bajo un mismo propietario, que rápidamente debe adoptar una decisión porque gestiona muchas hectáreas.

la parcela es mediana o pequeña ya que no hablamos de los mismos costes A todas luces, parece que existen divergencias entre las distintas regiones productoras respecto a lo que debe o no debe hacer un sector claramente desbordado por la oferta, ¿qué opina al respecto?

Las circunstancias son diferentes en cada una de las zonas productoras y evidentemente, no todo el mundo piensa de forma homogénea. En el caso andaluz y por los motivos que le he comentado antes, la toma de decisiones se acelera cuando se tienen extensiones muy grandes. De hecho, los primeros arranques empezaron en el mes de junio, justo al acabar la campaña. En total, la superficie se ha reducido en unas 700 hectáreas, lo que significa un 20% menos respecto a la temporada anterior.

La suma de tres campañas negativas y la gran superficie de tierras que se gestiona provocaron que la toma de decisiones se hiciera de manera urgente. Las pérdidas por hectárea iban desde los 3.000 hasta los 8.000 euros. Esto es trasladable a otros casos.

A esta situación se suma otro hecho: en Andalucía suelen darse monocultivos y en otras regiones se diversifica en cítricos, uva de mesa, etc. Y esto, aunque no es lo deseable, permite que un producto pueda subvencionar a otro.

Pero, ¿cómo llevan ustedes el hecho de que otras zonas no lo hayan hecho?

Ojalá no tengan que hacerlo y esta campaña sea rentable para todos, pero mucho me temo que este exceso de oferta dará lugar a más arranques.

En cualquier caso, ¿usted asegura que sigue habiendo un exceso de oferta?

Por supuesto, aunque en concreto este año por diferentes motivos climáticos (un año de heladas tardías y lluvias abundantes), la parte precoz de campaña contará con menores volúmenes, pero desde media estación la cantidad de fruta será la misma y se podría volver a dar otra hecatombe.

Por todos es conocido que la renovación varietal que se llevó a cabo en Cataluña hace una década más o menos, no significó sólo un aumento de superficie sino que la rentabilidad por hectárea se mul-

tiplicó, donde antes se producían 35.000 kilos ahora son 60.000. Al igual que ocurrió en Murcia, donde había mucha producción histórica dedicada a la conserva de melocotón amarillo, reconvertida hoy en nectarinas precoces o paraguayos. Entre todas las zonas productoras hemos saturado el mercado, incluida la nuestra. Es evidente que hay reticencias entre las diversas regiones e incluso entre países productores, pero lo importante sería que llegáramos a una solucionar el problema de manera global. ¿Cómo afronta el agricultor estos arranques si finalmente no hay ayudas?

En nuestro caso, los arranques ya fueron afrontados inmediatamente nada más acabar la temporada. Sin sospechar la envergadura final de la crisis y con un Plan Estratégico por parte del Ministerio que podía vislumbrar ayudas para el arranque, que finalmente no se han materializado, el agricultor ya lo ha asumido en su cuenta de resultados.

En mis entrevistas me han comentado que algunos operadores europeos, tienen intención de saltarse Sevilla como origen después de Marruecos y continuar con Murcia porque la fruta no les satisface cualitativamente hablando.

Pues no tengo constancia de esto, todos los clientes están cerrando sus posiciones con normalidad. Por ejemplo, en SAT SINTESIS ya estamos fijando promociones como de forma habitual . La calidad de la fruta precoz es la que es para fruta de ciclo corto. Si lo que alegan es que la fruta se hace muy rápidamente, les digo que con la misma premura que en Murcia.

No es un buen mensaje intentar tomar ventaja comercial rebajando la importancia de los demás orígenes.

Respecto a la empresa que dirige, ¿qué puede decirme?

Este año no tendremos fruta extra temprana porque en abril habrá pocos kilos debido al retraso de Huelva. El efecto de las coberturas fue nulo porque el viento se las llevó. La primavera tan atípica que estamos teniendo está provocando un retraso.

Se empezará sobre el 25 abril y Sevilla, en campo abierto, no lo hará antes de mayo.

Será un año tardío en Andalucía. Creo que llegaremos acompasados a las promocio-

Hace cinco años que en SAT Síntesis iniciamos un cambio varietal centrado en nectarinas porque creíamos que la producción de mayo era mejorable en cuanto a grados brix, calibre y formas redondas. Todo ello significa que este año, entre el 75% y el 80% de nuestra oferta será de estas variedades de mayor calidad. Calculamos que estaremos en unas 14.000 toneladas.

Along with some areas in Murcia, Andalusia is the community that starts its harvests earliest. This year, the extra early productions under plastic in Huelva have been significantly affected by the wind and the harvest will not be as early.

How do you feel about the fact that other Spanish producing regions have not accompanied Andalusia in this mass grubbing of fruit trees?

My opinion is that the situation that has occurred here is basically owing to the property structure type: large farms under a single fiscal name. When a year of important losses such as last year occurs, these are accumulated by the same owner, who must quickly adopt a decision because there are many hectares involved. This is different when the plot of land is medium-sized or small, since we are not talking about the same costs.

Clearly, it seems that there are divergences between the different producing regions as to what should or should not be done by a sector that is plainly overwhelmed by the offer. What is your opinion on this point?

The circumstances are different in each of the producing regions and obviously, not everyone thinks

in the same way. In the Andalusian case, and due to the abovementioned reasons, the decision making process must be speeded up when dealing with very large tracts of land. In fact, the first grubbing operations started in June, at the end of the campaign. In total, the surface area was reduced by around 700 hectares, which means 20% less than the previous season.

The sum of three negative campaigns and the large surface area of land that is being managed meant that urgent decisions had to be taken. The losses per hectare ranged from 3,000 to 8,000 euros. This cannot be applied to other cases.

Another fact is added to this situation: Andalusian farms usually have single crops and in other regions farmers diversify with citrus fruits, grapes, etc. And this, although it is not what we might wish for, allows one product to subsidise another.

But, how do you feel about the fact that other regions have not carried out the same operations?

Hopefully, they won’t have to do it and this campaign is profitable for everyone, but I am very afraid that this surplus in offer will give rise to more grubbing operations.

In any event, are you sure that there is still a surplus in offer?

Of course, although specifically this year, due to different weather reasons (a year with late frosts and heavy rainfall), the early part of the campaign will have less volume, but from mid-season the amount of fruit will be the same and another catastrophe could occur.

Everyone knows that the variety renewal that was carried out in Catalonia around a decade ago did not only mean an increase in surface area, but also the profitability per hectare multiplied; where 35,000 kilos were produced in the past, now 60,000 are reached. As occurred in Murcia, where historically there was a great deal of production devoted to yellow peach canning, today it has been converted to early nectarines or flat peaches. Amongst all the producing areas we have saturated the market, including our own. It is obvious that there are misgivings between the different regions and even between producing countries, but the most important point would be for us to manage to solve the problem as a whole.

How do farmers face up to these grubbing operations if in the end there is no aid forthcoming?

materialised, the farmers have already had to assume the cost on their profit and loss accounts.

In my interviews, I have been told that some European operators are intending to bypass Seville as a source after Morocco and continue with Murcia, because qualitatively speaking the fruit does not meet their standards.

Well, I am not aware of that. All the customers are closing their positions normally. For example, at SAT SINTESIS we are already scheduling promotions as usual. The quality of the early fruit is that of short cycle fruit. If they allege that the fruit ripens very quickly, I would point out that the same occurs in Murcia.

It is not a good message to try and take commercial advantage by downgrading the importance of other sources. European customers are already well aware of the particularities of Spanish production and it has its own ranking, where Andalusia continues to stand out due to its high quality.

With only a few days to go, how do you see the campaign?

This year, we will not have extra early fruit because there will be fewer kilos in April due to the delay in Huelva’s harvest. These coverings had no effect at all because the wind blew them away. The very unusual spring that we are having is causing a delay.

It will start around the 25th of April, and Seville, in the open fields, will not start before May. It will be a late year in Andalusia. I think that we will reach the chains’ promotions in time, which usually start around week 19.

Regarding the company you manage, what can you tell me?

Five years ago at SAT Síntesis, we started up a variety change centred on nectarines because we thought that the May production could be improved regarding Brix, size and round shapes. All of this means that this year, between 75% and 80% of our offer will be made up of these greater quality varieties. We calculate that we will reach around 14,000 tonnes.

Este último aspecto es especialmente importante, ya que en el plano comercial se dirigen a países lejanos como Malasia, Canadá, Brasil, Uruguay, Emiratos y buscan otros con protocolos abiertos y que les permitan seguir siendo competitivos.

“Brasil es el que más ciruela consume, pero cada vez más empresas se dirigen allí y la devaluación de su moneda está dificultando las exportaciones, al igual que pasa con el dólar en los países que usan esta moneda como forma de pago”, asegura el director general, José Aurelio García. Por su parte, el veto ruso, sin fecha de caducidad, “sigue haciéndonos daño”, y como otras empresas, han dejado el mercado chino en “pausa” por la falta de agilidad en los tránsitos y trámites burocráticos que llegan a dejar la fruta en el puerto más tiempo del deseado.

A la hora de dirigirse a los clientes una buena herramienta es CiEx. La marca de calidad Ciruela de Extremadura impulsada por Afruex inició su andadura el año pasado, y ahora debe recibir su espaldarazo definitivo. “2017 fue un año transitorio, y en éste esperamos darle un impulso de cara al consumidor”.

Historia y cifras Explum se constituyó en 2012 en Valdelacalzada (Badajoz) y es una de las pocas cooperativas que quedan

en la zona. Su forma jurídica, probablemente “la más social que existe”, imprime su carácter y le lleva a apostar por productos de gran arraigo como la ciruela y otros como las nectarinas y melocotón, especializándose en ellos.

El 85% de su producción total corresponde a la ciruela, un producto que el año pasado tuvo una mala andadura al igual que el resto de frutas de hueso. Su volumen total descendió hasta quedarse en un 40% respecto a 2016, alcanzando los 7 millones de kilos, una cifra que esperan superar este año.

Su calendario de producción va de finales de mayo a final de septiembre, y su área de cultivo, toda en la misma zona, abarca una superficie de 430 hectáreas de 70 agricultores (60 de ellos socios).

On the other hand, the Russian veto, still without an expiry date, “continues to harm us” and like other countries, they have left the Chinese market on ‘standby’ due to the lack of flexibility in the transit and bureaucratic procedures that mean that the fruit is left at the ports for longer than might be wished for.

When addressing clients, CiEx is a good tool.

The quality brand Ciruela de Extremadura fostered by Afruex started its venture last year and must now receive its final green light. “2017 was a transitory year and now we hope to give it a boost for consumers.”

Background and figures Explum was established in 2012 in Valdelacalzada (Badajoz) and it is one of the few cooperatives that remain in the area. Its legal structure, probably “the most social existing,” imbues its character and leads it to opt for deeply-rooted produce such as plums and others such as nectarines and peaches, specialising in them.

85% of its total production corresponds to plums, which last year had a bad harvest as occurred with all the other stone fruits. The cooperative’s total volume dropped to 40% compared to 2016, reaching 7 million kilos, a figure that they hope to exceed this year.

Its production schedule goes from the end of May to the end of September and its cultivation area, all in the same region, covers a surface area of 430 hectares belonging to 70 farmers (60 of them cooperative members).

In the world of fruit, arriving on the market early means a clear competitive advantage. And if this occurs with greater quality, the profitability is virtually guaranteed. This is what must have been behind the commitment by the giant company from Extremadura when starting up its latest project, the implementation of crop farms under glass to bring its production schedule forward 15 days. The pilot scheme will allow them to start harvesting at the beginning of May and it covers 50 hectares including the different plantations owned by the company, as confirmed by the sales manager, José Antonio Gomes. “We are carrying out trials with breathable canvas and we have determined that using this system we can obtain an improvement regarding earliness, flavour, Brix, size… as well as allowing a greater homogeneity in colour and uniformity to be obtained.” To all this is added the greater vegetable health, given that the physical barrier prevents the entry of insects, as well as protection against inclement weather conditions.

This new development is added to others that Sol de Badajoz has incorporated in previous campaigns.

On the one hand, the concentrate and puree transformation line to take advantage of fruit with external blemishes, but that is in perfect organoleptic conditions. And on the other hand, the diversification in its range, with the addition of pomegranates (four years on its portfolio, with a variety renewal, backing greater internal and external colour) and persimmons (this will be its third year, with work being carried out at the central installations to add rooms with which to remove the astringency of this fruit).

More apricots and flat peaches With this in mind, the company is facing up to an intense variety conversion, opting for materials with greater colour, more Brix and greater hardiness. Likewise, the “fruit from July and August has been removed and we have increased the volume of extra-early, early and late produce”, Gomes states.

Regarding types, although its star product continues to be the plum, the company is increasingly opting for apricots (mainly with French orange and red coloured varieties) and flat peaches, and it is bringing back the yellow peach, a fruit that is returning to the national market along with the neighbouring Portuguese and Italian markets. “We are going to be the largest producers in this segment.”

De forma paralela, han puesto en marcha la ampliación de extensiones para otras fechas: Alhama y Archena en una segunda etapa, y Abarán y Cieza para la tercera.

Renovación varietal

a proliferación de distintos orígenes y, en algunos casos la sobreoferta, han motivado una situación difícil para la fruta de hueso en los últimos años. José Velasco, gerente de El Ciruelo, confirma que a nivel general existe cierta inestabilidad pero “el sector se está resituando, tanto a nivel de producción nacional, como de calendario”, y en este sentido, la firma que lidera está apostando por los cultivos extratempranos y precoces, con recolecciones que comienzan desde el 15 de abril en las zonas de costa y terminan a mitad de junio. Hace tres años realizaron una importante inversión para ampliar fincas en Cabo de Gata (Almería), adquiriendo 200 hectáreas que ya están a pleno rendimiento y que se suman a otras que ya tenían en Águilas y Mazarrón, similares en fechas. un alto nivel de Brix por la salinidad de la tierra y una gran calidad organoléptica derivada del entorno (en las inmediaciones del Parque Natural), y su clima desértico y casi exento de precipitaciones en primavera favorece una mayor producción y homogeneidad. En paraguayo les ha permitido contar con frutas con un alto nivel de Brix “que favorece que el consumidor vuelva a repetir”, y amplían la oferta casi 2 meses al principio de la campaña (empiezan el 15 de abril), alcanzando los 5 meses en total. Otra de las tipologías que están renovando es el albaricoque, sumando nuevas variedades que amplían el calendario y la gama de sabores y otros aspectos relacionados con la ‘comida’.

The proliferation of sources and, in some cases, oversupply, have brought about a difficult situation for stone fruit in recent years. José Velasco, manager of El Ciruelo, confirms that, in general, there is some instability, but “the sector is changing its direction, both regarding national production and the calendar,” and on this point, the leader company is opting for out- of-season and early crops, with harvests starting from the 15th of April in coastal areas and ending in mid-June. Three years ago they made an important invest to enlarge farms in Cabo de Gata (Almería), acquiring 200 hectares that are already fully operational and to which others that they had in Águilas and Mazarrón are added, with similar crop dates. Our goal is to give “safety and service” to the European distribution chains, Velasco points out.

At the same time, they have started broadening the extensions for other dates: Alhama and Archena in the second phase, and Abarán and Cieza for the third phase.

Variety renewal “100% colour, higher Brix and diversity.” From the very beginning, El Ciruelo has followed a variety renewal strategy seeking out these characteristics. In flat peaches, it has allowed the company to have fruit with a high Brix “that encourages consumers to repeat their purchase” and to extend the offer by almost 2 months at the beginning of the campaign (they start on the 15th of April), reaching a total of 5 months. The apricot is another of the types that they are renewing, adding new varieties that extend the calendar and the range of flavours and other aspects related to the ‘food’.

On a structural level, this year the company is finishing the enlargement of its warehouse in Alhama, Murcia, and the installation of new machinery, doubling its size and reaching 20.000 m². In total, 6 million euros have been invested.

El volumen global de hueso en esta campaña alcanzará entorno a los ocho millones de kilos, entre los que se incluye la cereza.

Agromark, uno de los operadores más importantes en brócoli en Europa, asegura que “producir fruta de hueso es un mundo muy diferente del hortícola donde el riesgo financiero es importante y la rentabilidad se puede dar o no al cabo de cuatro años.

No tiene nada que ver con la producción de hortícolas, pero en Murcia debemos buscar alternativas y nosotros estamos en un proceso de deslocalización debido al problema del agua, con el que, además, se criminaliza al sector agrícola.”

unque conocido por ser uno de los gigantes del brócoli, la compañía hace más de 10 años que posee plantaciones propias de frutales, una línea que en los próximos años potenciará.

El más destacado es el de cereza, en el que concurren tres zonas diferentes de producción: en Mequinenza (Zaragoza), la zona de la montaña de Alicante y el área de Jumilla.

Con estas tres localizaciones se cubre un calendario que abarca casi 16 semanas.

Para su confección, se cuenta con dos establecimientos, uno en Fraga, recientemente adquirido y el otro en Jumilla, a través de su alianza con frutas Toli.

El segundo proyecto está enfocado hacia una reconversión varietal moderna tanto en melocotón como nectarina y paraguayo.

Todo ello sin olvidar el albaricoque.

And one of the categories that is to be strengthened is the yellow peach. “The curious aspect of the case is that there was a time when this variety was being grubbed out and now we have revalued it, particularly on the national market, where we intend to strengthen our presence through the new alliance with multinational for this and other produce,” explains Carlos Domenech, Operation Manager of Agromark.

The overall stone fruit volume in this campaign will reach around eight million kilos, including cherries.

Agromark, one of the most important broccoli operators in Europe, guarantees that “producing stone fruit is a very different to vegetable growing, since the financial risk is important and it will take four years to know whether it is profitable or not. It has nothing to do with vegetable production, but in Murcia we must look for alternatives and we are in the middle of a relocation process due to the water problem, which, additionally, is criminalising the agricultural sector.”

Si no estás en la línea de salida, te alejas del mercado.” Quien así se manifiesta es Antonio Caballero, gerente de Frutas Torero. “En tres años hemos reconvertido 60 hectáreas, las 10 últimas corresponden a árboles que tan sólo tenían 5 años. Si quieres seguir en el negocio debes estar predispuesto a nuevos cambios.”

“La campaña pasada fue la peor de la historia”

La compañía de Abarán, al igual que otras muchas, hace una década que efectuó una importante reconversión de melocotón a nectarina.

“La paradoja es que ahora se vuelven a realizar plantaciones de melocotón, al tiempo que en mayo se produce una saturación de los mercados en nectarina. En cuanto al albaricoque ya hace años que no tenemos nuevas plantaciones porque creo que ha tocado techo, aunque esperamos que, por la falta de oferta italiana y francesa, la demanda sea más elevada. Todo es absolutamente cambiante.”

“This is a risky business” Fruit farming has become a risk activity. Farmers have to be ahead of the pack regarding what the market demands.

“This business is changing more every day. If you aren’t at the starting line, the market leaves you behind,” states Antonio Caballero, manager of Frutas Torero. “In three years we have converted 60 hectares, of which the last 10 correspond to trees that were only 5 years old. If you want to continue in the business, you must be ready to make changes.”

The company from Abarán, just like many others, made an important conversion from peaches to nectarines a decade ago. “The paradox is that now peaches are being planted again. At the same time, in May the market is saturated with nectarines. Regarding apricots, we haven’t had any new plantations for years now because I think the market has peaked, although we hope that, due to the lack of Italian and French offer, the demand might be higher. Everything is completely changeable.”

The company which, as well as operating with stone fruit is one of the traditional grape growing companies, is also carrying out renewals in the Crimson variety,

which are being replaced by ITUM varieties since they are more commercially successful, as well as smaller volumes of varieties with royalties.

The executive confirms that this year they have decided to carry out a very intense thinning operation with the trees in order to obtain larger fruit. “Last year we were already using this technique, but it has been more significant during this campaign. The half kilo and kilo baskets are a very popular format on the German market and we have opted for less produce, but that is larger in size.”

A few days after the start of the campaign, Caballero indicates that, in spite of the general concern existing, “the early fruit operators are starting the campaign much more calmly that we expected.”

As a matter of fact, this year’s quality seems better than last year’s due to the hours of cold that the trees have experienced. On the other hand, the different frosts

have eliminated a great deal of the extra early and early production. “The nearest horizon indicates that the campaign will start slightly after the normal dates and with less fruit, which will also coincide with the large retailers’ stone fruit programmes.”

It is very risky to advance the final result of the campaign, but “the frosts that have occurred both in Italy and in France, in Valencia, in Lerida and in our own Region, are partially clearing the market.” In any event, the executive guarantees, “once the circumstances are more favourable at source, we always keep an eye on what could be happening at the destinations. We need good weather to motivate consumption.”

Regarding the oversupply that the market is suffering from, Caballero personally believes that “there is no other overall solution than a public regulation that bans more planting of some varieties for a certain period of time. We are all in the same boat and with an oversupply we are not going to get anywhere.”

Necesitamos que el buen tiempo nos acompañe para incentivar el consumo.”

El directivo confirma que este año se han inclinado por realizar un aclareo de los árboles muy intenso con el objeto de obtener una fruta de mayor tamaño. “El año pasado ya adoptamos este este manejo, pero en esta campaña ha sido más importante. Las cestas de medio kilo y de un kilo son un formato muy demandado en el mercado alemán y hemos optado por menos producto, pero de mayor tamaño.”

A escasos días de comenzar la campaña, Caballero indica que a pesar de la preocupación general que existe, “los operadores de fruta

temprana iniciamos la campaña bastante más sosegados de lo que teníamos previsto.”

Así las cosas, la calidad de este año parece superior a la del año pasado por las horas de frío que han tenido los árboles. Por otro lado, las diversas heladas se han llevado por delante bastante producción extra temprana y temprana. “El horizonte más cercano indica que la campaña empezará un poco más tarde de las fechas habituales y con menos fruta, lo que además coincidirá con los programas de hueso de la gran distribución.”

Respecto a la sobre oferta que padece el mercado, Caballero personalmente opina que “no existe otra solución global más que una regulación por parte publica que prohíba más plantaciones de algunas variedades durante un periodo de tiempo. “Debemos actuar con cautela” Desde la compañía murciana Blancasol se apela a la prudencia tras la peor campaña de hueso de la historia

as tres últimas campañas de hueso, pero especialmente la última, han supuesto replanteamientos importantes para las empresas productoras.

“Hemos dejado parcelas en blanco por la incertidumbre en la que vive el sector de la fruta de hueso”

En Blancasol, por ejemplo, algunos de los pocos arranques que se han llevado a cabo se han convertido en producción de cítricos, por previsión, y otras parcelas se han dejado en blanco. “Otros años cuando hacíamos algún arranque, ya teníamos la planta preparada. Ahora, por la incertidumbre constante de los mercados y por la importancia que puede tener esta campaña para el sector, hemos dejado la tierra en blanco”, aclara José Luis Sánchez.

Las producciones de la compañía, repartidas por diferentes localizaciones de la región, no se han visto afectadas por las heladas del mes de febrero, aunque el fuerte viento de finales de marzo sí ha ocasionado algunos daños exteriores en plantaciones de nectarina temprana, que con el aclareo de la fruta serán eliminados.

Hace unos tres años que Blancasol se planteó una renovación varietal de sus fincas, que al mismo que aliviaba la presión hídrica per-

manente de la zona, suponía la plantación de variedades más modernas. “Fue una cuestión de adelantarnos varios años a lo que veíamos venir,”

En cuanto a lo que puede ser el transcurso de esta campaña, el directivo matiza que “es muy arriesgado hablar de resultados finales pero lo que parece más probable es que el grueso de la oferta, en el mes de mayo, puede coincidir con la entrada en demanda de las grandes cadenas, lo que evidentemente, podría ser muy ventajoso para evitar que se produzca una situación como la del año anterior.”

La firma gestiona unas 2.200 hectáreas de terrenos, repartidas desde el altiplano de la Región hasta San Javier. Sólo en hueso, alcanza unos 12 millones de kilos, ocupando el albaricoque el primer puesto. Le siguen entorno a unos 3,5 millones de nectarinas, otros 2,5 de paraguayos, 2 de melocotones, así como una cantidad menor de ciruela temprana.

Aunque históricamente la compañía nació por y para la fruta de verano, hace más de una década que se optó por completar el trabajo los doce meses del año con tres productos: cítricos, fruta de hueso y uva.

Three years ago, Blancasol decided on a variety renewal on its farms, which alleviated the permanent water stress in the area and also meant the plantation of more modern varieties. “It was a question of getting a few years’ ahead of what we could see was coming.”

Regarding what could occur during this campaign, the executive states that “it is very risky to talk about end results, but it seems more likely that most of the offer in May, could coincide with the start of the demand by the large chains, which obviously could be highly advantageous to be able to avoid a situation like last year’s from occurring.”

The company manages around 2,200 hectares of land, between the region’s highlands down to San Javier. In stone fruit alone, it reaches around 12 million kilos, with apricots in first place. This is followed by around 3.5 million kilos of nectarines, another 2.5 million of flat peaches, 2 million of peaches, as well as a smaller amount of early plums.

Although traditionally the company was established for and about summer fruits, over a decade ago it opted for completing the work twelve months a year with three products: citrus fruit, stone fruit and grapes.

n un contexto extremadamente difícil, la entidad de la comarca de la Ribera, máximo exponente de la fruta de hueso en la Comunidad Valenciana, sigue apostando por una producción que está en el propio ADN de sus socios. Su gerente, José Climent explica que “pese a las dificultades del hueso debemos seguir en una línea de modernización, de vanguardia y de búsqueda de nuevas oportunidades que den rentabilidad al agricultor y, por supuesto, satisfacción al consumidor”.

Al contrario que en Andalucía, en Valencia no se han producido arranques masivos. “Es cierto que vivimos en un periodo de grandes excedentes pero los agricultores, en su mayoría, siguen aguantando de manera estoica estas campañas, en parte porque nos ayudan nuestras otras dos bases productivas, el kaki y los cítricos.”

inversiones. Supondría posiblemente el abandono”. Y en este sentido, Climent, remarca ser más partidario de la promoción a gran escala que de los arranques. “Todo ello pese al exceso productivo que tiene todo el país.”

Esta reducción en todo el calendario tiene su parte positiva, ya que las primeras previsiones apuntan a que la acumulación de fruta al inicio de campaña no será cuantiosa.

“Esperamos que el mercado tradicional pueda absorber estos volúmenes hasta que las cadenas empiecen con sus programas en mayo y no se produzca una caída de precios en picado, como la temporada pasada, que no se recuperan.”

El volumen global de la entidad se sitúa entre 12 y 14 millones de kilos de fruta: unos 7.000 son de nectarinas, 2.000 de melocotón, alrededor de 2.000 de paraguayo, unos 1.000 de albaricoque y algo de platerinas.

Sus principales destinos se encuentran en la Europa central, donde Francia e Italia cumplen un papel destacado y conocen muy bien el prestigio de la marca Diplom.

Respecto a las diferentes especies, Climent cree que “el albaricoque ha tocado techo y su desequilibrio entre oferta y demanda es muy fuerte y en el paraguayo se ha pasado del éxito al exceso en muy pocos años.”

La dinámica de cambio en el sector es muy rápida con cultivos intensivos que producen mucho y más rápido, lo que implica una saturación del mercado cuando un producto lleva una buena trayectoria de precios, puesto que todo el mundo acaba apostando por lo mismo. “Este es un problema que ya está sobre la mesa con fruta de hueso, y se podría producir en breve con el kaki,” concluye el directivo.

This year’s volumes are being presented with the consequences of two frosts (the one on the 22nd-23rd of February and the one on the 21st-22nd of March) that will reduce the harvest by up to 40%. With the first one, nectarines and peaches were affected most; the second frost damaged all species, including flat peaches and

apricots and with a more extensive calendar, since the first one only damaged the extra early varieties.

This reduction in the entire calendar has its good side, since the first forecasts point towards the fact that there will not be a significant accumulation of fruit from the start of the campaign. “We hope that the traditional market will be able to absorb these volumes until the chains start their programmes in May and the prices don’t plummet, as occurred last season, because they don’t recover.”

The organisation’s overall volume is between 12 and 14 million kilos of fruit: around 7,000 are nectarines, 2,000 peaches, around 2,000 flat peaches, 1,000 of apricots, along with some flat nectarines. The main destinations are in Central Europe, where France and Italy play outstanding roles and are very familiar with the prestige of the Diplom brand.

Regarding the different species, Climent believes that “apricots have peaked and there is an important imbalance between supply and demand and flat peaches have gone from success to surplus over a very short period.”

The change dynamics in the sector are very fast, with intensive crops that produce a great deal, very quickly, which means market saturation when a product shows a good price development, since everyone ends up opting for the same produce. “This is a problem that is already on the table with stone fruit and it could occur in the near future with persimmons,” the executive concludes.

Velero lo ha conseguido y, campaña tras campaña, demuestra que es una gran opción para los agricultores de pimiento california rojo que quieren conseguir la máxima producción en poco tiempo. Poco hay que decir que no se conozca ya de este rojo con aptitud para verde de Seminis, ya que quienes lo conocen saben de su fácil manejo y la calidad de sus frutos. También con un largo recorrido (5 años), cabe destacar a SV1215PB. El aguante en planta de este california rojo es una de sus principales características y cuenta con una gran productividad, buena forma, firmeza, un calibre que permite su confección en flowpack y niveles muy bajos de cracking.

En Lamuyo, Brito y Baquero son líderes en su segmento de otoño. Hace ya 10 años que Seminis lanzó la primera variedad para temprano (trasplantes de abril a primeros de junio) y desde entonces son muchos los que repiten el cultivo año tras año, atraídos por su color brillante y la firmeza del fruto, aspectos muy bien valorados en las subastas.

A Baquero (trasplantes de mitad de junio a final de julio) solo le han bastado dos años para posicionar-

se. De esta variedad sobresalen su plasticidad (se adapta a diferentes condiciones y terrenos), y su alta producción. Sin olvidar la firmeza, el color y las cotizaciones que alcanza en septiembre y octubre, ya que “es la única que da un calibre grande en esas fechas”, asegura el técnico de Desarrollo de Pimiento Francisco Tomillero.

Para plantaciones entre el 10-15 de julio a principios de agosto, la empresa cuenta con “la variedad más firme del mercado para esas fechas”, SV5581PH. El fruto, muy pesado, obtiene un gran porcentaje de primera calidad. Además, es idóneo hacer ciclo largo de julio a abril.

Amplia gama Junto a las variedades mencionadas, todas con L4 y spotted, Seminis dispone de otros materiales que completan su oferta de pimiento. Ejemplo de ello es el california naranja Quirón (con calibre G, la mayoría para flowpack). O SV1204PB, un California rojo que permite “jugar” con las fechas porque cuaja bien en condiciones de calor, madura más rápido que otros y tiene una firmeza “extraordinaria”. Además, el responsable comercial, Luis Twose, asegura que en plantaciones del 25 de julio se ha alcanzado una media de 10 kg/m2 de producción total, y que hay empresas que lo han recolectado en verde sin problemas, ya que tiene un bonito color y no presenta problemas de plateado.

En pimiento italiano, las opciones más destacadas son SV4502PP (trasplantes de agosto) y Werta (finales de junio a julio), ambos muy buena calidad de fruto, un atractivo color verde oscuro y resistencia a L4 y

spotted; y L3 y spotted respectivamente Por último, en la línea de picantes para plantaciones a partir de mayo están los ‘Hot Pencil’ Candela y Fireflame en rojo, Starflame (amarillo) y Orangeflame (naranja) para packs tricolor, que se adaptan bien a cuajes con frío y calor, una ventaja para hacer ciclo largo.

En definitiva, una amplia gama que satisface las necesidades de los productores, con materiales de alta calidad para la distribución y el consumidor.

The setting with high temperatures, derived from the hardiness of the plant, along with its fast ripening and to the fact that it maintains a G calibre, with some GG, are its best virtues.

In Lamuyo, Brito and Baquero are leaders in the autumn segment. 10 years have passed since Seminis launched the first early variety (transplants from April to the beginning of June) and since then many farmers repeat the crop year after year, attracted by its bright colour and the firmness of its fruit, aspects that are very well appreciated in the auctions.

Baquero (transplants from mid-June until the end of July) has only needed two years to reach its position on the market.

Its plasticity (adapting to different conditions and soils) and its high production stand out from this variety. And let us not forget its firmness, colour and the prices it gets in September and October, since “it is the only one that reaches a large size on these dates,” affirms the Pepper Development technician, Francisco Tomillero.

For crops planted between the 10th and the 15th of July and the beginning of August, the company has “the firmest variety of the market for these dates,” SV5581PH. The fruit, which is very heavy, obtains a large percentage of top quality produce. In addition, it is suitable for the long cycle from July to April.

Extensive range Alongside the abovementioned varieties, all with L4 and spotted, Seminis has other materials that complete their pepper offer. Syngenta presenta sus amarillos con más resistencias

Kiiroi y Kioto son sus novedades más recientes. Junto con Zeraim, la firma copa el 40% de la superficie de pimiento de Almería de pimiento sigue creciendo, “incluso en zonas tradicionalmente tomateras como el levante”.

Posteriormente los días 31 de enero y 1 de febrero Syngenta celebró unas jornadas de puertas abiertas con la presencia de más de 600 agricultores en El Ejido interesados en conocer las novedades comerciales: Miyabi, Nagai, Alonso y Kabuki.

Alonso es un clásico ya de las variedades de Syngenta, pero quisieron mostrarla para resaltar que sigue siendo una alternativa válida para plantaciones de final de julio, por su gran uniformidad y excepcional color en rojo y verde.

as II Jornadas de Pimiento Temprano de Dalías fueron el marco elegido por Syngenta para presentar dos de las novedades más recientes que tienen en el segmento del California amarillo: la más reciente, Kioto (BY140530), comercial desde abril, y antes de ella lanzaron Kiiroi, que ya lleva dos años en el mercado.

El responsable de Pimiento de Syngenta, Diego Díaz, explicó a Fruit Today las principales características que aporta cada una.

Ambas son idóneas para ciclos productivos largos y presentan una gran capacidad de cuaje, pero cuentan con ventajas diferenciadas. En el caso de Kioto incluye como novedad la resistencia a nematodos y oídio, además de las estándar (alta a Tm:0-3 e intermedia a TSWV). “La variedad es súper uniforme en calibre y forma durante todo el ciclo, tiene una pared muy gruesa y un color amarillo atractivo”.

Por su parte, Kiiroi es “súper productiva” y destaca por su facilidad de cuaje tanto con calor como con frío. Su fruto es “bastante uniforme” y destaca por su producción (en la 48 Fruittoday

finca que pudimos ver ya se habían cosechado 6 kg y aún tenían mucha recolección por delante), buena conservación para temprano y frutos homogéneos, además de por su “color y tamaño perfectos”. Todo ello hace augurar una evolución creciente de las ventas.

Díaz nos adelantó también las características del California rojo Osaka (BF141034).

Una variedad más temprana que su ya conocida Kabuki, que llega para completar la gama de Syngenta en Californias rojos resistentes a oídio. De este material se pueden resaltar sus frutos con buen color, muy homogéneos, productivos y con calibre G-GG. Pero las novedades en temprano no se quedan ahí. El año que viene Syngenta seguirá sumando nuevos números y variedades de las que se puede adelantar que seguirán la línea de calidad y resistencias que abandera la firma. No en vano, entre Syngenta y Zeraim copan “aproximadamente el 40% de la superficie” de producción de pimiento de la provincia de Almería (unas 3.000 hectáreas aproximadamente). Una tendencia que presumiblemente irá al alza, ya que la superficie

Para Miyabi se visitó un invernadero de producción ecológica en el que se pudo observar que su resistencia intermedia a Lt (oídio), es perfectamente efectiva en esas condiciones y que la variedad además destaca por su producción y uniformidad.

Nagai, del que destacaron la elasticidad, es una variedad cuyas plantaciones pueden ser medias o medio-tardías (del 10 al 25 de julio), y es capaz de cuajar frutos de muy alta calidad y uniformidad en condiciones de frío y calor, además de ser especialmente adecuada para agricultores de cooperativas por la homogeneidad de sus frutos en calibres principalmente G. Finalmente, se visitaron dos invernaderos de Kabuki, en los que se pudo observar, como en el caso del Miyabi, la efectividad de su resistencia intermedia a Lt (oídio) y su gran capacidad de producción y respuesta final de la planta. Kabuki es sin duda la principal apuesta de la marca Syngenta este año, gracias a su elasticidad para plantaciones medias y medio-tempranas, y su excepcional producción final y longitud de ciclo, conjugadas con la tranquilidad que transmite su resistencia a oídio.

Its fruit is “quite uniform” and it stands out due to its production (on the farm we could already see that they had harvested 6 kg and they still had a long way to go to finish the harvest), good conservation for early crops and homogeneous fruits, as well as due to their “perfect colour and size.” All of this bodes well for a growing evolution of the sales.

Díaz also advanced the characteristics of the red California, Osaka (BF141034). An earlier variety than the well-known Kabuki, which arrives to complete Syngenta’s range in red California peppers that are resistant to powdery mildew. The fruits of this material should be highlighted, with good colour, very homogeneous, productive and with G-GG calibres.

But the new developments in early peppers don’t stop there. Next year, Syngenta will continue adding new numbers and varieties about which they indicate that they will follow the line of quality and resistances guaranteed by the company. With good reason, between Syngenta and Zeraim they occupy “approximately 40% of the surface area” of pepper production in the province of Almeria (approximately 3,000 hectares). A trend that presumably is on the rise, since the pepper surface area continues to grow “even in areas that are traditionally used for tomato growing, such as the Levant.”

Subsequently on the 31st of January and the 1st of February Syngenta held some open days with the presence of over 600 farmers in El Ejido interested in discovering the new commercial developments: Miyabi, Nagai, Alonso and Kabuki.

Alonso is now a classic of Syngenta’s varieties, but they wanted to show it to emphasise that it

continues to be a valid alternative for plantations at the end of July, due to its important uniformity and exceptional colour in both red and green.

For Miyabi an ecological production greenhouse was visited, where its intermediate resistance to Lt (powdery mildew) could be observed as being perfectly effective in these conditions and that the variety also stands out due to its production and uniformity.

Nagai, of which its elasticity was emphasised, is a variety with plantations that can be mid or mid-late (from the 10th to the 25th of July) and it can set fruits of very high quality and uniformity in both hot and cold weather conditions, in addition to being particularly suitable for cooperative farmers due to the homogeneity of its fruits, mainly in G calibres.

Finally, two greenhouses of Kabuki were visited, where the effectiveness of its intermediate resistance to Lt (powdery mildew) could be observed in the case of Miyabi and its great production capacity and the final response of the plant. Kabuki is without any doubt the main option backed by the Syngenta brand this year, due to its elasticity for mid and mid-early plantations and its exceptional final production and cycle length, combined with the peace of mind that its resistance to powdery mildew transmits.

La última novedad, en este caso de tipo California amarillo, es Tuonela, para ciclo tardío (desde el 25 de julio). Su gran uniformidad y producción la convierten en una opción ideal para ciclos muy largos.

A lo largo de tres días, los visitantes pudieron comprobar las características de estas variedades y otras ya de sobra conocidas que integran el catálogo comercial de la empresa, como, Merkava (rojo para ciclo medio-tardío cuya recolección llega a finales de abril en perfectas condiciones).

También se pudieron ver los amarillos Tundra y Ártico (ambos tardíos), y los rojos Sherman, Sobek y Babieca, sin olvidar al referente en su segmento, Melchor.

Very similar in aspect, they could be seen on a farm planted on the 1st of August where the workers responsible for them emphasised that Carlomagno has a slightly larger size than Pizarro, although both plants produce G-GG- sized vegetables.

The latest development, in this case of the yellow California type, is Tuonela, for late cycles (from the 25th of July). Its important uniformity and production make it into an ideal option for very long cycles.

Over three days, visitors could see with their own eyes the characteristics of these varieties and others that are already very well known included in the company’s sales catalogue, such as Merkava (a red pepper for middle-late cycle with harvesting at the end of April in perfect conditions). Porcentualmente los mayores consumidores de ecológico son los países nórdicos, aunque también destaca el mercado germano. “En líneas generales, el California es un pimiento consumido y valorado en todos los países europeos.”

A la hora de desarrollar nuevos materiales, dan prioridad a sabor y sostenibilidad, usando las tecnologías más avanzadas. Otros de los pilares de su I+D es la obtención de frutos con un alto nivel de calidad y mayor nivel de resistencias a los virus más comunes en distintas zonas para evitar mermas en la producción, lo que supone un plus de rentabilidad para el agricultor y una mayor facilidad de manejo. En este sentido, Enza Zaden ya está comercializando variedades resistentes a ‘ceniza’, muy demandadas desde hace años.

Amongst the most innovative concepts on offer, the Tapered line stands out, with an extensive range in sizes (80 to 150 grams/piece) and a great diversity of colours (red, yellow and orange), giving companies a chance to market different formats. Added to all of this is flavour, a differential value as its fruits, with 8-10º Brix, have an “extraordinary sweetness”. Hay que tener en cuenta que en España los productos hortofrutícolas frescos utilizan cada año unos 1.500 millones de envases de cartón. Y muchos de estos millones de cajas se envían con producto a otros países. Con esta nueva caja de cartón las empresas exportadoras podrán llevar sus productos a mercados más lejanos y en buenas condiciones”, comenta por su parte Juan de Vicente Sandoval, Director Comercial de SAECO. La compañía puede adaptar a las necesidades del cliente el diseño de sus nuevas cajas activas, que tendrán un aspecto similar a las convencionales, y las fabricará de modo que sus propiedades activas se adapten a cada producto.

“En envases de cartón, que facilita su

reciclado, se comercializa una gran parte de la producción agroalimentaria”, resalta Carlos de Vicente Sandoval, director general de SAECO, que es líder regional en cartón ondulado con una capacidad de producción instalada de 150 millones de m2, lo que equivale a más de 300 millones de envases agrícolas.

El desarrollo de este envase innovador es quizá uno de los resultados más notables de la colaboración establecida desde hace unos diez años entre la empresa murciana SAECO y el grupo de investigación en Ingeniería del Frío y la Seguridad Alimentaria de la UPCT, que lidera el catedrático López Gómez.

La Politécnica y la compañía de fabricación de cartón han participado conjuntamente en dos proyectos CDTI y un proyecto europeo Eureka. Las últimas fases de optimización de la fabricación de este envase de cartón activo para ser utilizado con pimiento y tomate, y ser comercializarlo a un precio tan competitivo como el convencional, se están desarrollando a través de un proyecto de I+D del programa RIS3 Mur. Se estudian también las distintas posibilidades de comercialización de esta tecnología a nivel internacional con la ayuda de un Proyecto del Programa Europeo H2020 - SME Instrument, donde se está optimizando el uso de este envase en hortalizas de hoja (como lechuga), fruta de hueso, uva y cítricos.

“To a certain degree, the packaging using this technology is intelligent because it only activates its anti-microbial agents and oxidative process inhibitors when the box is loaded with fresh produce, during transport and storage of the produce in cold storage,” the professor from the Food Engineering and Agricultural Equipment department indicates. “The products used to manufacture it are natural and with zero waste,” the professor from UPCT adds.

“This patented technology can resolve a very important problem of produce losses that occurs when packaged in conventional cardboard boxes. It must be taken into account that in Spain fresh fruit and vegetable produce use around 1,500 million cardboard boxes every year. And many of these millions of boxes are sent with produce to other countries. With this new cardboard box, exporting companies will be able to send their produce to more distant markets in good conditions,” according to Juan de Vicente Sandoval, Sales Manager of SAECO. The company can adapt the design of its new active boxes to the customer’s requirements, which will look similar to conventional ones and will be manufactured in such a way that their active properties adapt to each product. “A large part of agrifood production is marketed in cardboard packaging, which aids recycling,” underscores Carlos de Vicente Sandoval, General Manager of SAECO, which is the regional leader in corrugated cardboard, with an installed production capacity of 150 million m2, equivalent to over 300 million agricultural containers.

The development of this innovative packaging is perhaps one of the most outstanding results of the collaboration established over the past ten years between the company from Murcia SAECO and the research group in Cold Engineering and Food Safety at the UPCT, which is led by the Professor López Gómez. The Politécnica and the cardboard manufacturing company have jointly participated in two CDTI projects and one European Eureka project. The final optimisation phases of the manufacturing of this active cardboard packaging to be used with peppers and tomatoes and marketed at a price that is as competitive as conventional packaging, are being developed through an R&D project in the RIS3 Mur programme.

The different international marketing possibilities of this technology are also being studied with the help of a Project from the H2020 - SME Instrument European Programme, where the use of this packaging is being optimised for leafy vegetables (such as lettuces), stone fruit, grapes and citrus fruits.

Ventas La cadena de supermercados incrementó sus ventas netas en un 7,8% en 2017, hasta alcanzar los 3.594 M€. Este incremento se vio reflejado también en la cuota de mercado, consolidándose como el quinto operador del país con un 4,3%.

Precios El año pasado Lidl también mantuvo el liderazgo en precios bajando su cesta de la compra en un 0,06%, mientras en el sector se encareció un 2,1% de media, según el informe Nielsen 360. Especialmente destacada fue la evolución en frescos. En este sentido, Lidl mantuvo invariables los precios de los productos frescos (0,0%), mientras el resto de la distribución los encareció de media un 2,8%.

Empleo El año pasado Lidl creó 800 nuevos empleos en España y ya cuenta con más de 13.000 empleados. En los tres últimos años ha incrementado su plantilla en más de un 30%, consolidando más de 3.000 nuevos puestos de trabajo.

Prices Last year, Lidl also maintained its leadership in prices, reducing the price of its shopping basket by 0.06%, whilst in the sector on average it increased by 2.1%, according to the Nielsen 360 report. The evolution in fresh produce was particularly outstanding. Accordingly, Lidl held unvarying prices for fresh produce (0.0%), whilst the rest of the large retailers increased the prices on average by 2.8%.

Employment Last year, Lidl created 800 new jobs in Spain, and now it has over 13,000 employees. Over the past three years it has increased its staff by over 30%, consolidating over 3,000 new jobs.

Pero si hay una de línea que llama la atención es la Sandwich Lettuce Range. Un concepto que busca ofrecer “una lechuga para cada tipo de pan” (baguette, pita, wraps…), y que es especialmente atractivo para el canal Horeca. Un ejemplo de ello es el nuevo tipo Crystal de textura más gruesa, crujiente y jugosa, ideal para hamburguesas, por ejemplo, y que a nivel agronómico funciona especialmente bien en hidropónico.

En brásicas la innovación tiene como premisa la diversidad: de colores, formas y tamaños. Todo ello ha impulsado el consumo de este segmento, asegura José Antonio Hernández, Especialista de Cultivo. Ya de cara al futuro más inmediato, las claves pasan por los calibres minis y floretes. Rijk Zwaan da una vuelta de tuerca a todo ello y añade sabor.

“Tenemos coles dulces de diferentes tamaños y peso para los mercados europeos”. Cabe destacar especialmente la col picuda Teama RZ, que lleva dos años en el mercado y ha venido a mejorar las condiciones agronómicas de manejo por su gran vigor y fuerte resistencia a enfermedades.

Novedades también en la gama de col rábano, con la suma de una variedad blanca.

En coliflor, la paleta es amplia y en los próximos años veremos importantes novedades en materia de color. De momento tienen opciones en verde (Vitaverde RZ), blanca (Tramont RZ, comercial desde el próximo año, es su primera variedad de invierno para ciclos de 120 días) y romanesco (Puntoverde RZ).

Ya en brócoli, las dos novedades comerciales son Robredo RZ (recolecciones de primavera) y 27-735 RZ (la gran novedad de invierno, con mejor conservación poscosecha respecto a los estándares del mercado).

El recorrido termina con Elfy, un mini apio dulce casi sin hebras, y la nueva línea de rúcula bajo la marca Rocketeerz con la que diversifican formas (tienen la primera rúcula de hoja redonda), sabores (menos amargos) y trabajan la resistencia a Peronospora.

At present, they have applied it to different categories (iceberg, oak leaf, Batavia and Crunchy), and over the next few years it will be added to the remainder. “It will become a trend,” Saiz guarantees.

At the CED in La Palma, over 500 people could see the many options offered by the new varieties from the Crunchy Lettuce range, with greater quality and a sweeter flavour, amongst which the Snack® variety stands out. “The leaves are easy to remove and it stands heat very well, therefore it can be used as a base for food, instead of bread.” It is already available in supermarkets and an eye-catching packaging has been chosen to help consumers to know how to make the most of its advantages.

Another of the main new developments involves the Mini Cos range, which extends the options of the mini romaine lettuces including new varieties with improved colour and size (14-18 cm and around 150 grams) that exceed those already on the market. “It is a segment that is experiencing rapid growth, particularly for two-piece packs.”

But if there is a line that draws the attention it has to be the Sandwich Lettuce Range. A concept that seeks to offer “a lettuce for each type of bread” (baguette, pita, wraps…), and that is especially attractive for the hotel, restaurant and catering sector. An example of this is the new Crystal type, with a thicker, crunchier and juicier texture, ideal for hamburgers, for example and agronomically, it works particularly well as hydroponic cultivation.

Within the company’s extensive portfolio, the Knox™ Lettuce concept is being extended to new varieties and possibilities that allow lettuces with this property to be available throughout the entire year, in the same way as Salanova, along with more varieties of each type and the improvement in disease resistances and agronomic characteristics to be able to grow them all year round. Additionally, Rijk Zwaan has new developments with maximum resistance to Bremia (downy mildew).

In winter vegetables, the innovation lies in diversity: in colours, shapes and sizes. All of this has boosted consumption in this segment, according to José Antonio Hernández, Crop Specialist. Looking to the near future, the keys lie in mini sizes and florets. Rijk Zwaan gives another twist to all this and adds flavour.

“We have sweet cabbages in different sizes and weights for the European markets.” The Teama RZ cabbage is worth a special mention, which has been on the market for the past two years and has improved the agronomical handling conditions due to its robustness and strong disease resistance.

There are also new developments in the kohlrabi range, with the addition of a white variety.

In cauliflowers, the palette is extensive and over the next few years we will see important new developments in colour. At present, there are options in green (Vitaverde RZ), white (Tramont RZ, on the market next year, it is the first winter variety for 120 day cycles) and romanesco (Puntoverde RZ).

In broccoli, the two new commercial developments are Robredo RZ (spring harvesting) and 27-735 RZ (the important winter new development, with improved post-harvest conservation compared to the market standards).

The journey ends with Elfy, a mini sweet celery, virtually string-free and a new line of rocket under the Rocketeerz brand name with diversification in shape (they have the first round-leafed rocket), flavour (less bitter) and they are working on the resistance to downy mildew.

a casa de semillas abrió las puertas de su base de operaciones en lechuga, la Finca Experimental El Aljibe, para mostrar las novedades de un portfolio que inauguró hace cuatro años con la compra de Agrisemen. A lo largo de este tiempo, ha trabajado en la adaptación de las variedades a las características de cultivo de la Región, haciendo especial hincapié en la resistencia a enfermedades (especialmente Mildiu y pulgón), el clima cambiante y la escasa y mala calidad de las aguas. Así lo explicó Óscar Peñalver, responsable de Productos de Hoja. “El problema está ahí y tenemos que intentar solucionarlo o adaptarnos de la mejor forma posible. La mala calidad del agua provoca problemas de calibre, aparición de Tip Burn para evitarlo seleccionamos las variedades que mejor se adaptan a todo ello”.

Otro de los puntos fuertes de sus materiales son la formación de frutos con menos costilla y la buena estructura interna, un aspecto importante para el procesado.

Para IV gama, Bejo busca materiales con “mucha tasa de blanco de forma natural, que 62 Fruittoday

sean muy flexibles a cambios climatológicos y que no sufran tanto frente a situaciones de estrés hídrico, para que mantengan la mejor forma interna”. También con tonos atractivos e intensos como el de Solos, el nuevo lollo “con el color de un triple rojo y la producción de un doble rojo”.

En la tipología de mayor peso, la iceberg, destacó la variedad Bonice para trasplantes de final de octubre y principios de noviembre, con recolecciones de final de enero y febrero.

En otras tipologías como la hoja de roble Be-68 142, cabe destacar el peso y volumen de la variedad, que ofrece un muy buen color y alto grado de resistencias. En Trocadero, se subrayaron las características de Sotalis y Antedis, que cubren todo el programa de producción con tolerancia a Mildiu. Y, por último, en Radicchio, Raffaelo permite tener producto fresco en recolecciones de final de marzo y abril, fechas en las que tradicionalmente es más complicado tener producto fresco y las empresas se ven obligadas a tirar de cámara.

The seed company opened the doors of its lettuce operating centre, the Experimental Farm El Aljibe, to show the new features of a portfolio that it started four years ago with the purchase of Agrisemen. Over this time, the company has worked on adapting the varieties to the region’s cultivation characteristics, placing special emphasis on disease resistance (particularly mildew and aphids), the changeable weather conditions and the scarcity and bad quality of the water. This was explained by Óscar Peñalver, Leafed Produce Manager: “The problem is here and we must try to resolve it or adapt to it as best as possible. The bad quality of the water causes problems with the size, appearance of Tip Burn… and to avoid it, we select the varieties that best adapt to all this.”

Another of the strong points of its materials is the forming of fruit with less ribs and good internal structure, an important aspect for processed produce.

For pre-prepared produce, Bejo is seeking materials with “ a great deal of natural white rate, which are very adaptable to weather changes and that do not suffer as much in situations of water stress, to maintain the best internal form”. Also with attractive, bright shades such as that of Solos, is the new lollo “with the colour of a triple red and the production of a double red.”

In the heavier type, the iceberg, the Bonice variety stands out for transplanting at the end of October and beginning of November, with harvests at the end of January and February.

In other types, such as oak leaf Be-68 142, the weight and volume of the variety are worth mentioning, offering a very good colour and a high degree of resistance. In Trocadero, the characteristics of Sotalis and Antedis are underlined, covering the entire production programme with tolerance to mildew. And finally, in Radicchio, Raffaelo allows fresh produce to be obtained in harvests at the end of March and April, dates when traditionally it is more complicated to obtain fresh produce and companies are obliged to resort to produce held in cold storage.

More offer in leafy vegetables and brassica Red Crispita and Monflor are some of the most innovative developments by Syngenta Syngenta’s R&D centre in Torre-Pacheco (Murcia) hosted the international open days to show the new developments in lettuce, endives, spinach and brassica.

Customers emphasised the impressive catalogue of Baby Leaf, a segment where the company has positioned itself very well in a few years due to the development of productive, resistant varieties, with good colour and that are very crunchy, which are conserved better in bags thanks to the 3D shape (three dimensional) of their leaves.

l centro de I+D de Syngenta en Torre-Pacheco (Murcia) acogió las jornadas internacionales de puertas abiertas para mostrar las novedades en lechuga, escarola, espinacas y brásicas.

Los clientes destacaron el potente catálogo de Baby Leaf, un segmento donde en pocos años se han posicionado muy bien gracias al desarrollo de variedades productivas, resistentes, con buen color y muy crujientes, que se conservan mejor en bolsa gracias a la forma 3D (tridimensional) de sus hojas.

En esta línea de calidad y producción, destacan la variedad de Baby Leaf Adelita; la novedad Red Crispita, que complementa en rojo a la variedad en verde Crispita, manteniendo sus características de gran vigor de planta, rendimiento y textura crujiente; o la nueva Mesclita, de hoja pequeña y muy crujiente, que tiene muy buenas perspectivas por su calidad y consistencia.

En espinacas, este año se ha presentado la variedad El Caballo, con rendimiento y color en siembras de otoño tardío y primavera temprana y que completa el ciclo de producción de El Prado, variedad de crecimiento rápido en invierno.

En brásicas, presentaron Monflor, un brócoli multiflorete que permite su recolección tanto en floretes como en tallos tiernos y que se diferencia por su extraordinario sabor dulce y su color verde oscuro en todo el florete, que lo hace más atractivo para el consumidor y mejora su vida en los lineales de venta.

Otra innovación es Frisetta, un cruce entre Col de Bruselas y Kale que se presenta en color verde o morado y que sirve tanto para su consumo en fresco como cocinado. Se trata de una variedad diferente que está en proceso de desarrollo y ha despertado el interés de la gran distribución por su versatilidad de uso y sus posibilidades culinarias.

En lechuga, dentro del segmento Mini Romana destacaron Starena (excelente tamaño en condiciones de frío y forma perfecta) y Mandelina, que complementa la gama para recolecciones de primavera con muy buen comportamiento frente a tip burn. Por último, en Iceberg se presentó Waikiki, para cultivos de primavera-verano, que destaca por su flexibilidad en campo, uniformidad, productividad y tolerancia a “tip burn” interno.

Along this same line of quality and production, the Baby Leaf variety Adelita stands out; the new development, Red Crispita, which complements the green Crisipita variety in red, maintaining its characteristics of important plant sturdiness, yield and crunchy texture; or the new Mesclita, with small leaves and very crunchy, which has very good prospects due to its quality and consistency.

In spinach, this year the El Caballo variety was presented, with yield and colour in late autumn and early spring sowing and that completes the production cycle of El Prado, a fast growing winter variety.

In brassica, the company presented Monflor, a multifloret broccoli that allows harvesting both in florets and in tender stalks and that is differentiated due to its extraordinary sweet flavour and deep green colour throughout the floret, which makes it more attractive for consumers and improves its shelf-life.

Another innovation is Frisetta, a cross between Brussels sprouts and kale that is presented in green or purple and can be eaten both raw and cooked. It is a different variety that is still being developed and has awoken the interest of large retailers due to its versatility of use and cooking possibilities.

In lettuces, within the Mini Romaine segment, Starena stands out (excellent size in cold conditions and perfectly shaped) and Mandelina, which complements the range for spring harvesting with very good behaviour against tip burn. Finally, in Iceberg, Waikiki was presented, for spring-summer crops, which stands out due to its flexibility in the fields, uniformity, productivity and tolerance to internal “tip burn”.

Another new development is the Better Baby Leaf concept to differentiate varieties that bring together a bonus in shelf life, colour, texture and yield per hectare, differential attributes that are very relevant for the processing industry, which obtains longer lasting raw materials that are also very pleasant to eat. a casa de semillas HM.Clause ha desarrollado dos nuevas variedades de escarola. La primera, CLX1082 (Aranza*), es una escarola lisa para trasplantes de octubre.

Se caracteriza por un gran vigor y una destacable homogeneidad en recolección. Y a nivel cualitativo cabe subrayar su “excelente blanco interno”. Además, aporta “bastante rendimiento y tiene un buen comportamiento frente a ribeteo”, explica Pedro Moya, técnico de Promoción y Desarrollo del área Sureste.

La segunda, CLX1110 (Lesly*), es una escarola rizada para las mismas fechas de plantación.

Con “buen vigor, alto rendimiento y muy buena tasa de blanco”, su planta rústica se comporta bien ante pudriciones y bordes quemados.

Ambos materiales poseen las características más buscadas por los productores para variedades con recolección en pleno invierno: resistencia a pudrición y buen comportamiento frente a bordes quemados, alto rendimiento, buena tasa de blanco y, en el caso de la escarola rizada, un rizo que llega al final del peciolo para poder aprovechar al máximo el producto.

Smooth and curly: new endives from Clause The seed company HM.Clause has developed two new varieties of endive. The first one, CLX1082 (Aranza*), is a smooth endive for October transplanting. It is characterized by its great robustness and an outstanding homogeneity during harvesting. And on a qualitative level, it is worth mentioning its “excellent white heart”.

Additionally, it brings “important yield and behaves well against fringing”, Pedro Moya, Promotion and Development Technician for the South Eastern Area explains.

The second variety, CLX1110 (Lesly*), is a curly endive for the same planting dates. With “good robustness, high yield and a very good white rate”; its rustic plant behaves well against rot and burnt edges.

Both materials have the most sought after characteristics by the producers for varieties with mid-winter harvesting: resistance to rot and good behaviour against burnt edges, high yield, a good white rate and in the case of curly endive, a curl that reaches the end of the petiole in order to be able to use as much of the produce as possible.

Nuevos actores en el espárrago La entrada de operadores y la proliferación de zonas de cultivo marcan las claves de futuro en un ejercicio pasado por agua

L

a campaña 2018 ha arrancado con varios contratiempos en la zona esparraguera por excelencia, la Vega de Granada, tirando por tierra todo el mes de marzo. El anegamiento de unas 1.200 hectáreas de cultivo por el aliviadero del embalse de Cubillas y los daños provocados por la helada de la madrugada del 20 al 21 de marzo han supuesto un duro varapalo para los productores, que aún no han terminado de cuantificar daños. Pero no solo eso. El hecho de que haya llovido durante casi todo un mes sin parar ha provocado graves daños a la producción. Desde la Unión de Pequeños Agricultores (UPA), han cifrado las pérdidas en cerca de 40 millones de euros.

Una situación calificada de “traumática” por el secretario de UPA en Granada, Nicolás Chica, ya que el sector ha visto cómo se perdía una tercera parte de la recolección.

Y lo peor de todo es que lo ha hecho en unas fechas en las que las cotizaciones alcanzan su máximo apogeo. Tanto es así que, a la hora de desarrollar las entrevistas para este Especial, han sido muchas las empresas que han preferido no aventurarse a dar cifras de previsiones de campaña. Habrá que esperar a que terminen sus respectivos balances de daños para saber si el volumen que estimaba la Delegación de Agricultura de la Junta de Andalucía antes de esta “crisis”, 69 millones de kilos, se aleja mucho de la realidad.

Lo que sí se puede avanzar es la superficie plantada, 6.466 hectáreas, con las que Granada reitera su hegemonía en este segmento, el espárrago verde, no solo en España, sino también en Europa. Una posición más que merecida, pero que le está empezando a pasar factura, ya que, a día de hoy, es casi imposible encontrar zonas para seguir plantando en las áreas más tradicionales (Huétor-Tájar, Loja, Villanueva del Mesía ) y, además, apenas se rotan los cultivos para regenerar la tierra, lo que perjudica el rendimiento y puede repercutir en la calidad.

Por ello no es de extrañar que los propios operadores granadinos busquen nuevas zonas donde plantar. Crece el número de fincas de espárrago en Sevilla, Málaga (principalmente en Antequera, pero también en Cártama, Coín ), y Córdoba, y ha hay más de

uno que se ha fijado en el norte de Almería para empezar a cultivar de cara a la próxima campaña. También se incrementa la superficie en otras comunidades como Extremadura y Castilla-La Mancha, donde prolifera la oferta por parte de nuevos operadores que ven en este producto una vía de diversificación bastante rentable. ¿Podría perjudicar el aumento de la oferta a los precios? Es una posibilidad que contemplan con cierto recelo las empresas de toda la vida. Por un lado, porque el consumo, aunque tiende a crecer, sigue siendo escaso (20% en España en los meses pico de producción), y por otro, porque el desconocimiento del cultivo y los mercados puede tirar por tierra la calidad y las cotizaciones. No en vano, en los últimos años ya se ha empezado a notar que la “alegría” en los primeros precios no ha sido la misma. La ‘culpa’ la tiene la importación en contraestación de espárrago latinoamericano. El consumidor español no tiene que esperar a que arranque la campaña española para comer el producto. Ya lo ve en el lineal el resto del año, y además en el propio inicio de la campaña, la coincidencia con espárrago de México desequilibra las cotizaciones, que tienden a la baja. Asimismo, el descono-

cimiento provoca que, en la mayoría de los casos, tampoco sepa valorar su calidad (por encima del producto importado), y quiera pagar más por ello. En el resto de Europa es justo ese aspecto, la calidad, la que lleva a los operadores a “lanzarse” a por el espárrago español apenas empiezan las primeras recolecciones (amén de por su mayor sostenibilidad vía huella de carbono).

Tendencias Aumenta la demanda de espárragos de menor calibre en Europa (8-12 y 12-16) en detrimento de los calibres más gruesos. Y es que el consumidor UE, antes más habituado al consumo de espárrago blanco, ha empezado a apreciar el sabor que ofrece el verde de menor calibre (con menos cantidad de agua).

Junto a este motivo hay otros más prácticos: el hecho de que los hogares cuenten menos miembros y el factor económico. Por ello las empresas empiezan a ofrecer formatos de menor gramaje (principalmente 200 gramos). Suben también las ventas de puntas de espárrago, una opción cómoda que permite un consumo fácil y el ahorro de tiempo en el cocinado.

a campaña de espárrago de Navarra ha arrancado con unos 15 días de retraso y buenas expectativas. El Consejo Regulador de la IGP Espárrago de Navarra prevé que se superen los 4 millones de kilos certificados (200.000 kilos más que en 2017), con una superficie un 13% mayor (1.725 hectáreas), similar a la registrada antes de la crisis económica. En cuanto a calidad, el presidente del Consejo, Miguel Mateo, avanzó que será buena gracias a la humedad de la tierra tras la nieve y la lluvia que se registraron hace unas semanas.

Entre las claves de esta positiva evolución están el fomento del consumo de espárrago fresco, la alta calidad del producto español respecto al que comercializan otros orígenes, las cotizaciones y el aumento de la producción en regadío (67% del total) por la presencia del Canal de Navarra, ha señalado Mateo.

A well-deserved position, but one that is beginning to take its toll, since today it is virtually impossible to find areas to continue planting in the most traditional regions (Huétor-Tájar, Loja, Villanueva del Mesía ) and, in addition to this, the crops are hardly rotated to regenerate the soil, which impairs the yield and can affect the quality. Therefore, it is not surprising that the operators from Granada themselves are looking for new areas to plant. The number of asparagus farms in Seville, Malaga (mainly in Antequera, but also in Cartama, Coin…) and Cordoba

is growing and more than one farmer has set their sights on northern Almeria to start growing for the next campaign. The surface area is also increasing in other communities such as Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha, where new operators are multiplying the offer, as they see a reasonably profitable diversification in this produce.

Could this increase in offer have a negative effect on prices? This is a possibility contemplated with some misgivings by the traditional asparagus-growing companies. Because consumption, on the one hand, is a rising trend, although it continues to be limited (20% in Spain in the peak production months) and on the other hand, due to ignorance about the crop and the markets can ruin the quality and the prices. With good reason, in recent years, farmers have started to notice that the ‘delight’ regarding the first prices has not continued.

The ‘blame’ is placed on counterseason imports of Latin American asparagus. Spanish consumers do not have to wait for the start of the Spanish campaign to eat the produce. For this reason, companies are starting to offer formats that weigh less (mainly 200 grams). The sales of asparagus tips are also on the rise, an easy option that allows easy consumption and saves cooking time.

A breath of fresh air for white asparagus The Navarra asparagus campaign started 15 days late and with good expectations. The Regulating Board of the PGI Espárrago de Navarra forecasts over 4 million kilos of certified produce (200,000 kilos more than in 2017), with a 13% increase in surface area (1,725 hectares), similar to that recorded before the economic crisis. Magnus F1, el futuro Bejo ha presentado su variedad dulce y sin hebras en Moraleda de Zafayona Al ser 100% macho es más productiva y no tiene retoños

l equipo de Bejo Ibérica se trasladó el pasado mes de marzo a la Vega de Granada para presentar la variedad Magnus F1, un material por el que pasa el “futuro del espárrago”. Semiprecoz, con calibres por encima de 16 milímetros y una gran calidad en lo que se refiere a cierre de yemas y morfología, cuenta con múltiples características similares a las de otras variedades presentes en el mercado. Sin embargo, hay dos aspectos que lo diferencian del resto y hacen de Magnus F1 una variedad única: por un lado, su genética 100% macho y, por otro, su sabor y ausencia de hebras, que lo enmarcan dentro del concepto ‘Sweet 4 you’ que ha creado Bejo para destacar sus variedades Premium (las mejores a nivel organoléptico).

Cuando la casa de semillas comenzó su programa de desarrollo de espárrago hace ya dos décadas apostó exclusivamente por la búsqueda de plantas 100% macho. “Aporta más precocidad, producción y uniformidad, una mayor resistencia a enfermedades y permite que no se generen bayas ni retoños, con el consiguiente ahorro en mano de obra”, explicó Rafael de Vicente, experto en Desarrollo. La planta de Magnus F1 cuenta con todas estas ventajas y su enrame alto favorece la aireación, evitando problemas como la roya. Asimismo, a la hora de desarrollar el material se optó por producirlo íntegramente en España, con el objetivo de que la variedad se adaptase totalmente al terreno.

Los productores presentes en la jornada constataron el valor diferencial del espá-

rrago de Bejo tras la charla. “La variedad es perfecta, tanto en tamaño como en producción. La finca que hemos visto lleva solo un año, cuando pasen dos más la producción será fabulosa”, aseguró un agricultor de Chauchina a Fruit Today durante la visita a campo. Ya en la degustación posterior, los presentes terminaron de confirmar que estaban ante un espárrago único: dulce, crujiente y sin nada de hebras (incluso en la parte pegada a la base), Magnus F1 se puede comer íntegramente, incluso crudo, y deja en boca un toque delicado que recuerda a las habas y guisantes.

La única “pega”, su valor por encima de la media respecto a otras variedades, se ve compensada en poco tiempo. “En 7 años, sólo con el ahorro en labores de eliminación de retoños, la inversión en semilla está amortizada”. También se ahorra en insumos gracias a la alta tolerancia ante roya; y al ser muy productiva (su rendimiento a partir del tercer año es un 60% mayor que otras variedades) y también estable y homogénea en el tiempo, consigue rendimientos en fechas en las que otras flaquean.

Magnus F1 tiene aptitud para verde y blanco (es su referencia en el norte de España). Para darlo a conocer de forma más masiva, Bejo ha hecho una promoción con garras para este año y el que viene.

Semi-early, with sizes above 16 millimetres and great quality in terms of closed tips and morphology, it has many characteristics that are similar to those of others present on the market.

However, there are two aspects that differentiate it from the rest and they make Magnus F1 a unique variety: on the one hand, its 100% male genetics and on the other hand, its flavour and absence of woodiness, which place it within the ‘Sweet4you’ concept that Bejo has created to make its Premium varieties stand out (the best ones on an organoleptic level).

When the seed company started its asparagus development programme two decades ago, it exclusively opted for the search for 100% male plants. “They provide earlier harvesting, greater production and uniformity, greater resistance to disease and they do not generate berries or shoots, with the subsequent savings in labour,” explains Rafael de Vicente, expert in Development. The Magnus F1 plant has all these advantages and its significant climbing feature encourages aeration, preventing problems such as rust. Likewise, when developing the material, it was decided to produce it entirely in Spain, in order to ensure that the variety adapted completely to the soil.

The producers present at the open day confirmed the differential value of Bejo’s asparagus after the talk. “The variety is perfect, both in size and in production. The farm we have seen has only been operating for one year, after another two years, the production will be amazing,” a farmer from Chauchina assured Fruit Today during the visit to the fields. In the subsequent tasting, those attending confirmed that they were in the presence of a unique asparagus: sweet, crunchy and without any woodiness (even at the part close to the bottom); Magnus F1 can be eaten entirely, even raw and it leaves a delicate touch in the mouth that is reminiscent of broad beans and peas.

The only ‘snag’, its above average value compared to other varieties, is compensated over a short period of time. “In 7 years, just with the saving in labour from removing shoots, the investment in seeds is amortised.” There is also a saving in consumables thanks to the high tolerance to rust; and as it is very productive (its yield from the third year onwards is 60% greater than other varieties) and also stable and homogeneous over time, yields are obtained on dates when other varieties are faltering.

Magnus F1 is suitable for both green and white asparagus (it is the reference in northern Spain). In order to make it known on a large scale, Bejo has made a punchy promotion for this year and next.

a falta de terrenos cultivables en los municipios “esparragueros” más tradicionales está llevando a Espárrago de Granada a buscar nuevas zonas de cultivo.

De momento, la ampliación ha comenzado por Antequera, la zona más temprana, donde poseen 150 hectáreas de las 650 que cultivan en total en la provincia. “Sería necesario regular las producciones pero el crecimiento es imparable. Muchas empresas hemos incrementado la superficie, y es a los dos o tres años cuando esas plantaciones empiezan a dar frutos. Lo que sí es seguro es que ahora mismo sobra producto y es arriesgado seguir plantando”, explica el presidente de la firma, José Antonio Gómez.

Entre las novedades que tienen está el lanzamiento de puntas de espárragos en envases de 200 gramos que comercializan a demanda de los clientes, así como el rediseño del etiquetado de sus marcas (Sol de Granada, Granada Fresh y Agromesías), y la ampliación de instalaciones y nuevas líneas de producción para dar respuesta a su incremento productivo.

La cooperativa de segundo grado está constituida por cinco de primer grado: Agroláchar, Vegachauchina, Espafron, Agromesía y Espalorquiana.

2018 Campaign During this year, Espárrago de Granada expects to obtain between 10 and 15% more production than last year, when it reached 3.5 million kilos. And the forecast for 2019 includes adding another 20% due to the increase in surface area that has been carried out in recent years.

Amongst their new features is the launch of asparagus tips in 200 gram packages that they market on customer demand, as well as the redesigning of their brand labelling (Sol de Granada, Granada Fresh and Agromesías), and the extension of the facilities and new production lines to respond to their production increase.

The second degree cooperative is made up of five first degree cooperatives: Agroláchar, Vegachauchina, Espafron, Agromesía and Espalorquiana.

n espárrago, el precio suele influir bastante en el ”gusto” de los consumidores

El año pasado la cooperativa de Villanueva Mesía (Granada) cerró la campaña con un millón de kilos y 270 Has, y este año prevén incrementar la producción entre un 10 y un 15% si el tiempo acompaña. “La gente está plantando menos debido a la falta de agua, aunque hay mucha demanda de espárrago”. Es por ello que la cooperativa, presente ya en los principales países de Europa, está abriendo otras líneas de exportación principalmente en destinos como Dubái y Canadá, donde tienen una pequeña ventana comercial que va del 10 de abril al 10 de mayo.

En septiembre tienen una pequeña campaña de 40 días

y cada vez se tiende más a elegir calibres finos en detrimento de los gruesos. Incluso en Suiza, un destino tradicional para los calibres más gruesos (16-20), es cada vez más común la demanda de espárragos de calibre 10-12. Carlos Ortega, gerente de Hortovilla, confirma esta tendencia y apunta otra en el extremo de la balanza, la de las puntas de espárrago, un producto más caro que facilita el cocinado al consumidor y que es cada vez más solicitado, por lo que son muchas las empresas del sector que se han sumado a su comercialización. Presentado en bandejas, ofrece espárragos sin la parte inferior del tallo (la más leñosa), que miden unos 14-15 centímetros en lugar de los 26-27 del espárrago entero. Según Ortega, este nuevo formato es percibido como más eficiente por dos motivos: el primero es que se eliminan costes de transporte, ya que solo se transporta el producto que se va a consumir, y segundo y más importante, se eliminan residuos, al comercializarse solamente la parte comestible.

La producción de Hortovilla se extiende desde febrero a junio, y en septiembre tienen una “pequeña campaña” de 40 días para el mercado nacional. Se trata de una “práctica que se hacía antiguamente en Granada, en las fincas que se quitaban”, y que ahora ha recuperado la cooperativa, pero con producciones nuevas que aportan frutos de una mayor calidad.

According to Ortega, this new format is seen as more efficient for two reasons: the first one is that the costs of transport are eliminated, since only the produce that is going to be eaten is transported, and secondly, and more importantly, waste is eliminated, as only the edible part is marketed.

Last year the cooperative from Villanueva Mesía (Granada) closed the campaign with a million kilos and 270 hectares and this year it plans to increase production by between 10 and 15%, weather permitting. “People are planting less due to the lack of water, although there is a great demand for asparagus”. This is the reason why the cooperative, already present in the main countries of Europe, is opening up other export lines, mainly in destinations such as Dubai and Canada, where they have a small trade window that runs from the 10th of April until the 10th of May. Hortovilla’s production runs from February to June and in September they have a “short campaign” of 40 days for the national market. This is a “practice that was carried out in Granada in the past, on the farms that disappeared”, and that now the cooperative has recovered, but with new productions that supply better quality produce.

as inclemencias meteorológicas han protagonizado el arranque de la campaña de espárrago de Cesurca. La riada derivada del aliviadero del embalse de Cubillas ha afectado a unas 260 Has de la firma (220 de espárrago y 40 de alcachofa). Por lo que en este 2018 “el mejor escenario posible” será repetir los volúmenes alcanzados el ejercicio pasado: 4,5 millones de kilos de producto nacional y 2,7 de importación, asegura el gerente Antonio Francisco Zamora.

Así las cosas, su proyecto de expansión se queda en un cierto ‘stand by’. El incremento de los volúmenes no se alcanzará en esta campaña, aunque sigue en marcha el crecimiento de superficie

de entre 120 y 150 hectáreas al año (actualmente tienen 1.100 Has de espárrago y 180 de alcachofa), y para 2019 adelanta que ampliarán sus fincas en otra provincia, sumando una nueva zona a las que ya tienen en Granada, Sevilla, Córdoba y Cádiz.

Dentro de su estrategia planean, además, la puesta en marcha de ensayos de cultivo de espárrago en invernaderos. Un proyecto que iniciarán el año que viene en distintas zonas de cultivo de Granada junto a cultivos “testigo” al aire libre, y para el que ya están estableciendo el protocolo de actuación.

En otra línea, la de la comercialización, Cesurca pone el foco en la apertura de nuevos mercados en los que no esté presente el espárrago español. “Estamos analizando la rentabilidad de Australia, Asia y Medio Oriente”. Otro destino de interés sería EE.UU., pero de momento solo es posible exportar espárrago blanco.

Diversificación La oferta de Cesurca es amplia. Solo en espárrago dispone de verde, triguero con IGP Espárrago de Huétor-Tájar, blanco y púrpura, este último en su segundo año comercial, “principalmente dirigido a exportación, pero también con ventas en España a través de Makro y El Corte Inglés”.

Tanto su gama en fresco como la de transformado (son de las pocas conserveras de espárrago verde y triguero de España) se caracterizan por su alta calidad. Para tener presencia en el mercado fuera de la campaña de espárrago, la firma cuenta también con alcachofa y calabaza.

Within their strategy they also plan to start up greenhouse asparagus crop trials. A project that they will start next year in different crop areas in Granada, alongside the open air ‘control’ crops, and for which they are already working on the action protocol.

In the marketing line, Cesurca is spotlighting the opening up of new markets where Spanish asparagus is not present. “We are analysing the profitability of Australia, Asia and the Middle East.”

Another interesting destination would be the USA, but at present it is only possible to export white asparagus.

Diversification Cesurca has an extensive offer. In asparagus alone it has green, wild with PGI Asparagus from HuétorTájar, white and purple, the latter in its second year on the market, “mainly aimed at exports, but also with sales in Spain, through Makro and El Corte Inglés.”

Both its fresh produce and its transformed range (they are amongst the few green and wild asparagus canneries in Spain) are characterised by their high quality. In order to be present on the market outside the asparagus campaign, the company also markets artichokes and pumpkins.

A todas las características mencionadas se añaden otras muy preciadas por el consumidor comunitario: son los primeros espárragos verdes del hemisferio norte y respetan el medio ambiente, ya que “prácticamente son de kilómetro cero para Europa” con el consiguiente ahorro en emisiones de CO2.

En esta primera campaña comercial el éxito de ventas ha estado muy marcado por el diferencial que aporta en el mercado de las importaciones, ya que es más fresco y de cercanía, al igual que por seguir la política de “Picos de Calidad y productos Gourmet” como principal referencia. Naranjo reconoce que “no es un espárrago más, juega en una liga diferente”, y pese a ello su precio es óptimo. “No especulamos, buscamos un precio adecuado para obtener un buen retorno para el campo que nos permita seguir invirtiendo y que al mismo tiempo sea asequible para el consumidor”.

Si todo marcha como hasta ahora, pretenden ampliar la superficie de cultivo en la misma zona de Vegas Altas del Guadiana y llegar a las 200 Has aproximadamente, siempre con un “crecimiento controlado para no canibalizar el producto” ya que es de nicho y si hubiera sobreproducción, perdería su atractivo. Además, no descartan ampliar el calendario siempre y cuando “seamos capaces de seguir ofreciéndolo con las mismas peculiaridades organolépticas en diferentes fechas”. De momento ya han demostrado que “todavía somos capaces de sorprender al consumidor con productos nuevos”.

All the abovementioned characteristics are added to others that are highly appreciated by European consumers: it is the first green asparagus from the North hemisphere and it is environmentally friendly, since is “is virtually kilometre zero for Europe” with the subsequent saving in CO2 emissions.

In this first commercial campaign, the success of sales has been acutely marked by the differential that it brings to the import market, since it is fresher and locallyproduced, as well as due to the fact that it follows the “Quality Peaks and Gourmet Produce” policy as its main reference. Naranjo acknowledges that “it is not just another asparagus; it is playing in a completely different league,” and in spite of this its price is optimum.”We are not speculating, we are looking for a reasonable price to be able to obtain a good return for the fields that allows us to continue investing and at the same time it must be affordable for consumers.”

If everything continues along the same lines, they intend to extend the crop surface area in the same area of Vegas Altas del Guadiana and reach approximately 200 hectares, always with a “controlled growth in order to not cannibalise the produce”, since it is a niche product and with overproduction, it would lose its attractiveness.

Additionally, they are not ruling out extending the calendar whenever “we can continue offering it with the same organoleptic peculiarities on different dates.” At present they have already shown that “we are still capable of surprising consumers with new products.”

La alta especulación y los pésimos resultados de campaña para los productores andaluces de patata han dado como resultado una modalidad de trabajo más segura

ruit Today Euromagazine habló con Marco Román, directivo de Contagri y representante de la sectorial de la patata dentro de Asociafruit. ¿Cómo se presenta la actual campaña de patata temprana? ¿Sigue bajando la superficie en las diferentes zonas andaluzas?

Este año viviremos una cosecha atrasada ya que, debido a las lluvias y el frío, las plantas no tienen el desarrollo que debieran. Calculamos que se empezará la cosecha sobre el 10 de mayo. En lo que respecta a la reducción de superficie, estamos en caída libre, pero no puedo asegurarle en qué tanto por cien. Es una tendencia manifiesta desde hace años. Y una caída que, en algunas zonas podría ser ya de dos dígitos. Al mercado español no le interesa la producción nacional, esta es mi sensación.

Campañas como la del año pasado en las que los agricultores perdieron mucho dinero hacen que se abandonen definitivamente los cultivos.

Las lluvias tan persistentes durante días ¿elevarán los precios de coste?

Por supuesto, este año los costes se van a disparar por los tratamientos que debemos hacer para controlar el mildium y todo indica que el rendimiento será inferior. Puede que sea menor de 40 toneladas por hectárea. ¿Cuál es el motivo principal por el que las grandes cadenas de distribución no apuestan por el producto nacional?

producto. En España se cuentan con los dedos de una mano y un poco más las grandes envasadoras, a las que les conviene comprar un producto barato, brillante, de buena apariencia, pero que lleva en cámaras meses y cuyo comportamiento culinario deja mucho que desear.

Este bucle provoca que al mismo tiempo, el consumo de patata baje cada año.

Realmente, se echa de menos una voluntad firme por parte de las cadenas y de los propios envasadores por utilizar la patata nueva, pero nuestros costes son unos 8.500 euros por hectárea y lo que prima es el precio.

¿Cuál es la salvación de las empresas que todavía siguen operando?

El trabajo a la carta. Cada vez somos menos empresas productoras, pero ante tanta incertidumbre hacemos siembras a la carta con los

volúmenes de los programas que nos demandan.

Y a día de hoy, ¿cómo se encuentra el mercado francés de la patata?

En términos generales Europa ha tenido una sobre producción, y por supuesto, las cámaras francesas siguen teniendo patata que vender más barata que la nuestra. El año pasado se vendió hasta julio y mientras los envasadores almacenaban la nuestra.

Cuando llegó la campaña de Castilla-León nos encontrábamos que había stocks andaluces, que perjudicaron especialmente a los operadores castellanos. Fue una tormenta perfecta.

Resulta paradójico que el español esté comiendo patata de cámara procedente del norte de Francia y la patata del sur de España se venda en Alemania.

How is the present early potato campaign coming along? Is the surface area still dropping in the different Andalusian areas?

This year we will have a delayed harvest since, due to the rainfall and the cold, the plants have not developed as they should. We estimate that the harvest will start around the 10th of May. Regarding the drop in surface area, we are in free fall, but I can’t be certain of the percentage. It has been an obvious trend for many years now. And a drop which, in some areas, could now reach two figures. The feeling I get is that the Spanish market is not interested in national production.

Campaigns such as last year’s, when the farmers lost a great deal of money, mean that they abandon the crops for good.

Will the non-stop rainfall for days on end raise the cost prices?

Of course, this year the costs are going to shoot up due to the treatments that we must carry out to control mildew, and everything points towards the fact that the yield per hectare will be lower. It could be less than 40 tonnes per hectare.

Why do the large retail chains not opt for national produce?

Basically, this is due to the production costs. In Spain, the large packing plants are few and far between, and they prefer to purchase cheap, shiny produce, with a good appearance, but that has been in cold storage for months and the culinary behaviour of which leaves a great deal to be desired. This

loop means that at the same time, potato consumption drops every year. Really, we miss a firm commitment by the chains and by the packing companies themselves to use new potatoes, but our costs are 8,500 euros per hectare and price is the priority.

What is really the safe haven for the companies that are still in operation?

Work on demand. There are increasingly fewer producers, but in the face of so much uncertainty we sow on demand with the volumes that we are requested for the programmes.

And at present, how is the French potato market behaving?

In general terms, Europe has had an overproduction, and obviously the French cold storage facilities still have potatoes to sell cheaper than ours. Last year they were sold until July, while the packing companies stored our potatoes.

When the Castilla-Leon campaign started, we found that there were still stocks of Andalusian potatoes, which particularly affected the operators from Castilla. It was truly a perfect storm.

It is a paradox that Spaniards are eating stored potatoes from Northern France and potatoes from Southern Spain are being sold in Germany.

That is right. Local production and the carbon footprint are common topics, but it is all very theoretical because the commercial transactions respond to money interests. My company, for example, sells 16,0000 tonnes of produce in Europe because there is a potato culture there. It is a product that they appreciate and they are ready to pay more for fresh produce. The complete opposite of the Spanish market.

La patata lleva varios días en los medios generalistas por el tema de la acrilamida. ¿Existe cierto alarmismo?

Las noticias hay que explicarlas bien. Llevamos siglos conviviendo con la acrilamida, que, por cierto no tiene que ser atribuida sólo a la patata, sino al café, al tabaco, a las galletas, al pan, a la bollería.

Además, no hay que criminalizar el producto porque no todas las patatas tienen el mismo nivel de acrilamidas, depende de sus condiciones de conservación. La patata nueva fresca no contiene acrilamidas porque su almidón no se ha convertido en azúcares. Es cierto que desde ahora habrá unas directrices europeas en las que figurará el nivel de acrilamidas, pero es una cuestión absolutamente preventiva.

¿Por qué existe la idea de qué a la patata le falta calidad?

El 70% del consumo español se orienta hacia el frito y en el sector no siempre se ofrece una patata que dé buenos resultados en este tipo de manejo culinario. Por lo tanto, habría que hacer un esfuerzo y vender como mínimo un 70% de patata con buena calidad para freír. Algunos supermercados se han dado cuenta de ello, y ya la han introducido en el lineal.

La pérdida de superficie este año en Andalucía parece significativa ¿En cuánto se calcula?

Las primeras estimaciones se calculan entre un 18% ó 20% menos de superficie.

También parece que el rendimiento medio por hectárea será inferior al año pasado por esta primavera inusualmente fría y tanto la zona temprana como la de media estación han sido afectadas. ¿Cómo podría transcurrir la campaña?

Será larga. El producto de Cartagena y Sevilla debe prolongarse hasta que empiece el norte. Y por lado, las patatas de Granada, Extremadura y Albacete, deberán ocupar un hueco importante porque nos harán falta. Alemania y Francia han plantado tarde, lo que beneficiará las exportaciones, sobre todo a Alemania en el mes de junio.

With just a few days to go before the Andalusian early potato campaign starts its harvest, the tricky subject of acrylamides hits the headlines.

Fruit Today Euromagazine wanted to talk to different sources to contrast how this new scare is being dealt with in a country where fried potatoes make up 70% of the consumption.

Potatoes have been in the news for several days due to the subject of acrylamide. Is this just a case of scaremongering?

The news has to be explained correctly. We have been living alongside acrylamide for centuries; which, by the way, should not only be attributed to potatoes, but also to coffee, tobacco, biscuits, bread and cakes.

In addition to this, the produce should not be criminalised because not all potatoes contain the same level of acrylamides; this depends on their state of conservation.

Fresh new potatoes do not contain acrylamides because their starch has not been turned into sugars. While it is true that now there will be some European guidelines showing acrylamide levels, it is merely a preventive question.

Why does the idea of low quality in potatoes exist?

70% of Spanish consumption is aimed at fried produce and in the sector we have not known how to offer a potato that gives good results in this cooking process. Therefore, we should make an effort and sell a minimum of 70% of potatoes with good quality for frying. Some supermarkets have realised this and have already put them on the shelves.

The loss of potato crop land in Andalusia seems significant this year. Howmuch do youestimate has beenlost?

The first estimates calculate between 18% or 20% less surface area. It also seems that the average yield per hectare will be lower than last year due to the unusually cold spring. The entire early and middle crop areas are being affected.

Would you dare to hazard an opinion as to how the campaign will unfold?

It will be long. Produce from Cartagena and Seville must continue until Northernharvests start. And on the other hand, potatoes from Granada, Extremadura and Albacete will have to occupy an important gap, because we will need them. Germany and France have planted late, which will benefit the exporters, particularly to Germany in June.

bérica de Patatas lleva de nuevo este año al comercio minorista la patata nueva de Málaga, la primera patata española de la temporada. El producto puede encontrarse hasta mediados de mayo en supermercados e hipermercados de toda España.

La patata nueva de Málaga es un producto único que, por un lado, aporta valor a la oferta de patata habitual en esta época, en su mayoría patata de conservación de Francia o patata nueva procedente de países como Israel y Marruecos; y por otra, fomenta el consumo de producto autóctono de temporada. En esta ocasión se prevé comercializar en torno a 600.000 kilos.

Hasta hace unos años era muy difícil adquirir esta variedad en la gran distribución, ya que se trata de un producto muy fresco y con un período de vida más breve que otros tipos de patata. Ibérica decidió llevar la patata nueva de Málaga por primera vez a los lineales en 2008, gracias a su know how y a la infraestructura necesaria que garantiza la distribución de esta variedad en condiciones óptimas de calidad y de presentación al público, al tratarse de una patata muy fresca y muy delicada.

La iniciativa de Ibérica de Patatas de llevar la patata nueva de Málaga a la gran distribución, así como la excelente acogida del consumidor, que valora cada vez más la patata nueva de Málaga por su sabor, calidad y frescura, ha contribuido a impulsar el cultivo de esta variedad en la zona. De hecho, Ibérica de Patatas vende la semilla a agricultores de la provincia.

Desde que Ibérica introdujo este producto en el comercio minorista hace 10 años, la comercialización se ha incrementado en un 30%.

La patata nueva se identifica con facilidad: al tocarla, la piel se levanta sin apenas resistencia y, al freírla, su color es menos amarillo y su textura, más crujiente. Rica en hidratos de carbono, y de gran importancia en nuestra alimentación cotidiana, los expertos en nutrición recomiendan su consumo a diario, junto con verduras, en ensaladas, legumbres y purés.

Elegimos un mal día, un día de intensas rachas de poniente que más tarde viraron en viento de Levante. Sin embargo, la experiencia, aunque corta, valió la pena. Salimos a unas pocas millas de Puerto Siles mientras duró nuestra entrevista.

Vicente Bayona Pérez nació en 1956 en Quart de Les Valls (Valencia) en el seno de una familia dedicada desde hace casi un siglo al negocio de la citricultura.

Antes de subir a bordo del Star Mizy, un Bavaria 39 cruiser, decidimos comer algo a pie de embarcadero.

El carácter afable de Vicente se hace más que evidente porque todo el mundo le saluda; es un lugareño querido.

Es mi primer entrevistado que no huye de publicar su color político, no en vano es concejal de Ciudadanos en la localidad de Canet de Berenguer (Valencia).

Se considera un hombre de suerte, posiblemente porque su amuleto es el famoso conejo de la suerte, Bugs Bunny, el cual perdió una vez y de manera casi milagrosa, logró recuperar. Aquel conejo que decía: ¿Qué hay de nuevo, viejo? le acompaña siempre en sus viajes de negocios.

¿Qué representa este barco para usted?

Es nuestro refugio de paz durante muchos fines de semana. Navegar es como “comerte una dosis de relax” si el día es el adecuado.

Puede ser el silencio más sublime, en el que oyes el aleteo de algún delfín al lado. Es casi como una necesidad terapéutica. ¿Cuál es el viaje más frecuente que realiza? Últimamente hemos ido mucho a Ibiza, saliendo a las 5 de la mañana y llegando a las 5 de la tarde. ¿Navegando en la oscuridad?

Por supuesto, no hay ningún problema. Se preparan las luces de navegación, las linternas, los chalecos salvavidas, las balizas, el equipo de abandono del barco, el visor nocturno y nos ponemos algo de abrigo, incluso en verano. Y todo listo. ¿Y entonces?

Es cuestión de permanecer atento a la pantalla del radar y al AIS. Mi mujer disfruta más que yo porque sale fuera borda, utiliza los prismáticos y mira las estrellas que no

puedes ver desde tierra. Al alba, empiezas a saludar a otros que han hecho lo mismo que tú.

Nada más lejos que un militante de Ciudadanos casado con una guapísima cubana de nombre ruso.

Bueno, todos los cubanos no han sido comunistas, y ha habido muchos disidentes. Y por otro lado, yo conocía a mi mujer antes de haber visitado la isla. Como soy un hombre de suerte, la primera vez que compré un billete para Cuba (entonces se hacía a través de agencias) al salir me topé con ella, nos saludamos porque en el pueblo nos conocemos todos y me pidió que le llevará un sobre. Le dije que sí pero que lo tenía que cerrar delante de mí. Lo demás es historia. Llevamos casados quince años.

Su mujer llegó a convertirse en trending topic en las inundaciones de Sagunto de 2016.

Sí, es cierto. Yo estaba en un pleno del ayuntamiento cuando me avisaron de que el coche de mi mujer se había sumergido en un badén inundable y ella estaba en el techo del coche.

“Navegar es para mi una necesidad terapéutica” Me pregunto: ¿A quién se le ocurre meterse en ese agujero de ratón en tales circunstancias?

Fue una mezcla de despiste porque iba pensando en sus estudios y por otro lado, de atrevimiento. Es una mujer de carácter. ¿Impregna esto de nacer en un pueblo de 1.000 habitantes y ser hijo y nieto de agricultores?

Sí, por supuesto. Yo llevo el ADN de la citricultura en mis genes. Mi abuelo fue uno de los primeros exportadores de esta comarca, mi padre también se dedicó a la tierra y al comercio y mis tíos redondearon el negocio con el transporte internacional de frutas. Yo creo que mi camino estaba trazado porque yo nunca fui buen estudiante, pero fui inmensamente feliz. De niño, me sentía fascinado por los camiones que llegaban a cargar a casa: Pegasus, Leyland Comet, los vehículos de aquella época… A los 14 años me subí con mi tío en el camión y nos fuimos a Londres, pasando por París. Aquel viaje me marcó porque yo que era “un xiquet de poble” vi la inmensidad de aquellas grandes ciudades Fruittoday 87

“Para llegar a Ibiza salimos a las 5 de la mañana y el viaje son 12 horas” y supe que había mucho mundo por vivir y recorrer. ¿Y su afición por el mar? ¿Desde cuándo navega?

previsiones de futuro. Este año, en Ibiza, hubo una tormenta muy importante que destrozó barcos enteros amarrados en las calas, pero yo me salí un día antes porque estaba anunciada.

Esto de los partes meteorológicos será por deformación profesional, ¿siempre mirando al cielo?

No es lo mismo el mar que la tierra, pero de paso controlo las producciones de aguacates.

Tuve una infancia muy ligada al mar. Cuando acababa el instituto toda mi familia bajaba con el camión cargado de enseres para el verano: la nevera, los somieres, etc. Pasábamos tres meses en la playa de L’Almardà. Éramos como indígenas, sueltos todo el día, con un bañador, unas chancletas y un neumático de camión como flotador. Ahí nació mi pasión por el mar. Ahora ya hace más de dos décadas que tengo embarcación y carnet de patrón de embarcación de recreo.

Por culpa suya aquello de la citricultura familiar ¿ha quedado relegado por los aguacates?

¿Ha vivido circunstancias de peligro?

¿Participa en algún tipo de regata?

No, rotundamente no, porque soy muy previsor con los partes meteorológicos; me los estudio muy bien. Yo soy de los que cree que si el mar no está en calma, lo mejor es permanecer en puerto o en el bar del puerto. Las dificultades máximas que he tenido han sido regresando porque el parte estaba muy ajustado en tiempos. Siempre veo las

Sí, el año pasado en esta misma fecha, estaba haciendo La Ruta de la Sal: Denia, Formentera, le das la vuelta a Ibiza y llegas a San Antonio.

No del todo, seguimos manteniendo nuestras producciones, pero había que buscar nuevas alternativas y así lo hicimos. Mis inquietudes se canalizaron en buscar nuevas salidas a los cítricos y me siento muy afortunado porque disfruto con el trabajo que hago.

¿Hace algún deporte?

No con asiduidad. Estoy mucho tiempo fuera

“Por la noche, hay que estar atento al radar y al AIS” de casa, pero en invierno me gusta esquiar en Andorra. ¿Cree acaso que maniobrar este barco es cualquier cosa? Son 9.000 kilos de peso. Si el viento está a favor subimos la vela mayor y la génova, pero si no hay que controlar con el motor.

Aboard the Star Mizy

We chose a bad day, a day with strong gusts of a westerly wind that later veered round to the east. However, the experience, although short, was worth it. We sailed out a few miles from Puerto Siles while our interview took place.

In 1956, Vicente Bayona Pérez was born into the heart of a family that had been devoted to the citrus fruit growing business for almost a century, in Quart de Les Valls (Valencia).

Before boarding the StarMizy, a Bavaria 39 cruiser, we decided to eat something on the pier. Vicente’s friendly nature becomes more obvious as everyone greets him; he is a well-loved local.

He is the first person I have interviewed who does not shy away from publishing his political colours; with good reason: he is a councillor for Ciudadanos in the town of Canet de Berenguer (Valencia).

He considers himself to be a lucky man, possibly because his amulet is the famously lucky rabbit, Bugs Bunny, which once he lost and almost miraculously, managed to get back. The rabbit that used to say: What’s up, Doc? always accompanies him on his business trips.

What does this boat mean to you?

It is our peaceful refuge for many weekends. Sailing is like “eating a dose of relaxation” if the day is right.

It can be the most sublime silence, where you hear the splashing of a dolphin swimming alongside. It is a therapeutic necessity.

Where do you usually go?

Recently we have been going to Ibiza, leaving at 5 in the morning and arriving at 5 in the afternoon.

Sailing in the dark?

Of course. It isn’t a problem. The navigation lights, torches, lifejackets, flares, equipment for abandoning ship and night viewing glasses are all prepared and we dress up warm, even in summer. And we’re ready to go.

And then?

It is a question of keeping watch on the radar screen and the AIS. My wife enjoys it more than I do because she stands on the deck and uses binoculars to look at all the stars that you can’t see on land. At dawn, you start to greet others who have done the same as you.

Nothing could be further from a Ciudadanos militant, married to a beautiful Cuban with a Russian name.

Well, not all Cubans are communists and there have been many dissidents. And on the other hand, I met my wife before visiting the island. As I am a lucky man, the first time I bought a ticket to Cuba (at that time, you had to use travel agencies), when I came out, I bumped into her. We said hello because everyone in the village knew each other and she asked me to take an envelope for her. I said yes, but that she had to close it in front of me. The rest is history. We have been married fifteen years now.

Your wife became trending topic in the Sagunto floods in 2016.

Yes, it’s true. I was in a plenary council meeting when I was told that my wife’s car was underwater in a floodable run-off channel and she was standing on the roof of the car.

I ask myself: who would go into that mousetrap under those circumstances?

It was a mixture of absentmindedness, because she was thinking about her studies and on the other hand, audacity. She has a very strong character.

Does the fact of being born in a village of 1,000 inhabitants and being a son and grandson of farmers permeate your nature?

Is it your fault that the family-run citrus fruit growing business has been overshadowed by avocados?

Yes, of course it does. I have the citrus fruit growing DNA in my genes. My grandfather was one of the first exporters in this region; my father also worked the land, as well as the business side and my uncles rounded off the business with international fruit transporting. I think that my path was laid down because I was never a good student, but I was incredibly happy. As a child, I was fascinated by the lorries that came to our house to load up: Pegasus, Leyland Comet, the vehicles of the time… At the age of 14, I went to London in the lorry with my uncle, passing through Paris. That journey marked me because I was “un xiquet de poble” (a country lad); I saw the vastness of those large cities and I discovered that the world is a large place that has to be experienced and travelled.

Not completely; we continue maintaining our productions, but new alternatives had to be found and this is what we did. My concerns were channelled into looking for new markets for citrus fruits and I am lucky because I enjoy my work.

And your love of the sea? How long have you been sailing?

My childhood was closely linked to the sea. When school finished for the summer, my entire family squeezed into the lorry, loaded up with everything we needed for the summer: the fridge, the beds, etc. We used to spend three months at L’Almardà beach. We were like little savages, outside all day, wearing bathing trunks and flip-flops and with a lorry inner tube as a rubber ring. That is where my passion for the sea was born. I have had a vessel for over two decades now and I have my leisure vessel captain’s ticket.

Have you experienced any danger?

No, categorically not, because I am very careful with the weather forecasts; I study them carefully. I am of those who say that when the sea is not calm, the best place to be is in port or in the bar in port. The worst difficulties have been coming back to port when the times were very tight regarding the forecast. I always see the future forecasts. This year in Ibiza, there was a very severe storm that destroyed entire yachts moored in the coves, but I left the day before because it was announced on the weather forecast.

Do you take part in any regattas?

Yes, this time last year I was doing the ‘Salt Route’: Denia, Formentera, sailing round Ibiza and on to San Antonio.

Do you do any sport?

Not assiduously. I am often not at home, but in the winter I like to ski in Andorra. Do you think by any chance that manoeuvring this boat is a piece of cake?

It weighs 9,000 kilos. If the wind is behind you, we raise the mainsail and the genoa, but if not, it has to be controlled using the engine.

After more than three hours on board, we return to port.
