Proexport turns 40 The Association from Murcia is celebrating its first 40 years in the hope of being able to celebrate at least another forty years serving its members “Proexport will continue to lead the fruit and vegetable growing sector for another 40 years, just as it has done to date,” its chairman, Juan Marín, stated during the General Assembly held in Murcia in May of this year. To do this, Marín stated that “we must continuously renew and adapt ourselves in order to not lose the markets.”

Analysing the 2016-2017 campaign, Marín qualified it as “complicated with frenzied ups and downs” because “the drought that has lasted four years has been joined by other weather conditions that have driven the markets crazy, causing the lettuce crisis, with malicious attempts to discredit us, which got no further than this, just attempts. We stood up for ourselves, serving our customers and for this reason we continue to be the greengrocer of Europe.”

roexport seguirá liderando el sector hortofrutícola otros 40 años más, como lo ha hecho hasta ahora”, declaró su presidente, Juan Marín, durante la Asamblea General celebrada en Murcia el pasado mes de mayo. Para ello, Marín señaló que “debemos estar en continua renovación y adaptarnos para no perder los mercados”.

Analizando la campaña 2016-2017, Marín la calificó como “compleja, con subidas y bajadas vertiginosas” porque “a la sequía que dura cuatro años se le han unido otras incidencias climáticas que han vuelto locos los mercados, provocando la crisis de la lechuga, con intentos malintencionados de desprestigiarnos, que quedaron en eso, sólo en intentos. Dimos la cara, dando servicio a nuestros clientes y por ello seguimos siendo la despensa de Europa”.

En este foro, David del Pino, consultor agroalimentario, expuso en su ponencia “Cambios Disruptivos en el Sector de las Frutas y Hortalizas”, que las cadenas discount están ganando la partida a las tradicionales que ofrecen pro6 Fruittoday

ductos para clase media, incorporando productos Premium y de categoría baja en el mismo espacio. En su opinión, “la producción murciana ha demostrado su capacidad de reinventarse, pese a obstáculos como la restricción hídrica”.

Como reconocimiento a los 14 fundadores de la Asociación, Proexport honró la figura de dos de ellos: Miguel Durán y Pedro Sánchez en el acto “40 años Cultivando Juntos”.

Más de 250 asistentes participaron en este evento que reunió a una amplia representación de empresas de Murcia, este de Almería y Vega Baja de Alicante.

At this forum, David del Pino, an agri-food consultant, gave his presentation “Disruptive Changes in the Fruit and Vegetable Sector,” in which he explained that the discount chains are winning the match against the traditional stores, offering products for the middle classes, incorporating Premium and low category produce in the same space. Over 250 people took part in this event that brought together an extensive representation of companies from Murcia, Eastern Almeria and Vega Baja of Alicante.

90% of the research by the Italian seed company, Eugen Seed concentrates on the development of tomato varieties. They are looking for produce with flavour, traditional and with great hardiness, in short “tomatoes that are pleasant to eat”, Jerónimo Ortega, a salesman from the company explains.

One of the latest, highly successful incorporations is Desértico, for long cycle and mid-September plantations. It is a juiceless tomato that brings great versatility when cooked in different ways and it also is included in the flavour category that is inherent throughout its line of development. “Both farmers and marketers like it, due to its agronomic characteristics and resistances”. This is its first year being marketed in Spain, but it has an important commercial history in Italy.

Melón y Sandía

La sandía gana la apuesta al melón (10-8) En verano, los españoles ya consumen más sandía (10,3 kg) que melón (8,4 kg). La ola de calor interminable acrecienta la tendencia.

egún diversas fuentes consultadas por Fruit Today euromagazine “esta realidad empezó a dibujarse hace varias campañas y en la actualidad significa una ventaja que se aproxima a los 2 kilos per cápita a favor de la sandía (10,33 kilos anuales), frente a los 8,4 del Piel de sapo que consume cada español de media”.

La sandía sigue acrecentando su cuota de mercado y quitando terreno al melón vía calidad; una calidad que el consumidor califica como uniformidad en el sabor, parámetro que no cumple el melón.

Esta fruta ha experimentado un crecimiento muy destacable. Según datos aportados por Crisanto Ampuero, Especialista de Cadena de Distribución de Bayer, “entre 2005 y 2017 el consumo de sandía ha aumentado 4 kilos y en esta campaña se pueden superar los 10 kg/persona/año.”

La gran calidad organoléptica de la ‘roja’ ha sido uno de los principales revulsivos del aumento de la demanda, que en apenas 12 años ha pasado de una producción de 850 millones de kilos (2005) a 1.200 millones en este año 2017.

¿Por qué se ha llegado a esta situación?

Los especialistas señalan dos hechos fundamentales: el primero, la presión de precios que imponen las grandes superficies para ambos productos, a los que equiparan en valor. “El coste de producción de una sandía es la mitad que el de un melón, pero el supermercado quiere el mismo precio para ambos. (Como ejemplo generalista indicar que producir un kilo de sandía en Murcia cuesta 15 céntimos frente a los 32 de un kilo de melón. En Castilla La Mancha este precio se puede situar en 9 para la sandía y 18 para el melón)”.

El segundo, y no menos importante, es que las casas de semillas durante muchos años pensaron en la productividad del agricultor, sacrificando el sabor o, sencillamente, dejándolo en segundo término.

Hoy, el sector ha tomado conciencia de la situación y trata de buscar soluciones desde el inicio de la cadena, esto es, desde las casas de semillas. Ya el año pasado se pudo ver en las distintas Demos de Melón y Sandía que la I+D en melón pasa por recuperar el ‘sabor tradicional’, incluso desde la Interprofesional de Melón de Castilla-La Mancha llevan tiempo elaborando un proyecto en este sentido.

“La distribución quiere comprar melón y sandía al mismo precio”

Así las cosas, el melón, poco a poco, ha ido perdiendo terreno frente a la sandía incluso en zonas tradicionalmente ‘meloneras’ como Castilla-La Mancha, donde el año pasado se ‘trasvasaron’ 700 hectáreas de un cultivo al otro, y se prevé que esta tendencia continúe en el presente ejercicio.

Consumo Hoy casi el 90% de la sandía que se consume es triploide (sin semillas), y por tipologías se divide así: 40% blanca sin semillas, 36% negra sin semillas; 14% mini con microsemillas; 8% mini sin semillas; 1% Crimson con semillas; y 1% negra con semillas.

En el caso del melón, el Piel de Sapo sigue liderando el consumo nacional, pero el aumento del turismo ha favorecido que se conozca cada vez más entre los extranjeros; y gracias a la genética desarrollada por empresas como Rijk Zwaan, que cuentan con variedades de calibres más pequeños ideales para exportación, este segmento “está creciendo a un ritmo del 15-20% anual”, asegura Diego Maestre, Crop Coordinator de Melón y Sandía.

According to different sources surveyed by Fruit Today euromagazine, “this reality started to appear several campaigns ago and currently this means an advantage of approximately 2 kilos per capita in favour of watermelons (10.33 kilos per year), compared to the 8.2 kilos of Piel de Sapo that every Spaniard eats on average.”

The watermelon market share continues to grow, gaining ground over melon due to quality; a quality that consumers qualify as uniformity in flavour, a parameter that is not met by melons.

This fruit has experienced a highly significant growth. According to data provided by Crisanto Ampuero, a Distribution Chain Specialist from Bayer, “between 2005 and 2017 watermelon consumption has increased by 4 kilos and in this campaign it could exceed 10 kg/person/year.”

The important organoleptic quality of the ‘red fruit’ has been one of the main keys to the increase in demand, which in just 12 years has gone from a production of 850 million kilos (2005) to 1,200 million in 2017.

What has prompted this situation?

Specialists point out two basic facts: the first, the price pressure that the large supermarket chains impose for both products, which they compare in value.

“The production cost of a watermelon is half that of a melon, but the supermarket wants the same price for both of them. (As a general example it should be mentioned that producing a kilo of watermelon in Murcia costs 15 cents compared to the 32 cents for a kilo of melon. In Castilla La Mancha this price can be 9 cents for watermelon and 18 cents for melon).”

Winter melon consumers

As a matter of fact, little by little, melons have been losing ground against watermelons even in traditionally ‘melon’ regions such as Castilla-La Mancha, where last year 700 hectares were ‘transferred’ from one crop to another and this trend is predicted to continue during this year.

Around 2,500 hectares are cultivated by Spanish operators in Brazil and Senegal. This production is consumed from December to March or April. According to Maestre, this area produces approximately 80,000,000 kilos.

Today, virtually 90% of the watermelons eaten are triploid (seedless) and according to typologies they are divided up as follows: 40% white seedless; 36% black seedless; 14% mini with micro-seeds; 8% mini seedless; 1% Crimson with seeds and 1% black with seeds.

In the case of melons, the Piel de Sapo continues to lead national consumption, but the increase in tourism has encouraged it to become more popular amongst foreign consumers and thanks to the genetics developed by companies such as RijkZwaan, with smaller-sized varieties that are ideal for export, this segment “is growing at a rate of 15-20% per year”, Diego Maestre, Melon and Watermelon Crop Coordinator states.

Bipolarity and specialisation Regarding the marketing, there are two different aspects: on the one hand, there is an increase in large-sized fruit for sale ‘in halves’ (in Spain), and on the other hand, size has been reduced to obtain smaller fruit for the export market.

In this context, the seed companies are aiming their efforts at seeking differentiation with different coloured fruit (skin and flesh), solutions for industry and varieties with greater consistency for export…And the fact is that specialisation is the order of the day.

As opposed to the loss in summer consumption, winter import Piel de Sapo melons have been experiencing their own revolution on the supermarket shelves over the past seven years.

a exportación española de sandía en 2016 registró un aumento del 9,9% en volumen y un 11,5% en valor, situándose en 719.427tm y 333,7 millones de euros respectivamente con respecto al año anterior (654.587tm y 299,1 millones de euros).

La sandía es, en peso, la tercera fruta exportada por España y su principal destino en la Unión Europea es Alemania, que absorbe 295.059tm. Por detrás se encuentran Francia, con 119.485tm (16,6%) y Reino Unido, con 65.806tm (9%).

Por provincias Almería se sitúa en primer lugar con un total de 329.630tm, seguida de Murcia con 161.546tm representando un 22,45% con respecto al total nacional. El tercer lugar lo ocupa Valencia con 120.046tm.

En melón, las novedades se centran en el segmento de Cantaloup, donde ha conseguido hacerse un hueco importante en el mercado tras varias campañas con la variedad Solmarín, recomendada para siembras de primavera tempranas o tempranas-medias (trasplante desde el 10 de enero hasta mediados de febrero). Su éxito se basa en que es muy productiva, muy precoz, con frutos homogéneos, una carne crujiente con alto contenido en Brix y muy buen sabor.

Solmarín tiene muy buen comportamiento frente a oídio.

El nuevo Cantaloup Jacobo está recomendado para trasplantes medios y tardíos. Es una variedad muy productiva, con una homogeneidad de fruto altísima, carne crujiente con alto contenido en grados Brix y más sabor.

En melón amarillo, se continúa con dos variedades que funcionan muy bien: Fenicio y Malerva. Fenicio aporta un calibre idóneo para trasplantes tempranos y un color en el fruto que va acorde con el nivel de recolección. Por su parte, Malerva es líder del mercado en siembras tardías por ser una variedad muy precoz, con unos niveles de azúcar que llegan a 15-16 grados Brix y por su fácil manejo para el agricultor.

La apuesta por la investigación es una constante y la compañía ya está inmersa en el desarrollo de un nuevo melón Galia que recupere el sabor tradicional.

a búsqueda de la excelencia no solo pasa por ofrecer productos de gran calidad. Otros aspectos como la seguridad y la salud en el trabajo o el compromiso social con el entorno son valores cada vez más importantes, y en ese sentido, Frutas y Verduras El Monarca es un ejemplo a seguir. Ya el año pasado desarrolló una experiencia piloto a nivel regional que ahora se ha extendido a todo el territorio nacional. Se trata de la iniciativa “Melón Solidario” que organiza junto a una cadena de supermercados, destinando las ventas de los melones con esa etiqueta íntegramente a la asociación Down España, con el objetivo de mejorar la calidad de vida de personas con síndrome de Down. Además, junto a este proyecto impulsan otras iniciativas que demuestran su compromiso social con entidades como Flamenco Rosa, un equipo de remo de supervivientes de cáncer de mama.

No en vano, ya trabajan en la consecución de frutas con residuo cero.

Entre los próximos hitos de El Monarca está crecer en la producción propia bajo el sistema ecológico (el año pasado consiguió la certificación ecológica), y actualmente desarrolla ensayos de I+D para optimizar el aporte hídrico y permitir un ahorro de entre el 20-25% a través de estrategias de riego deficitario controlado.

Other aspects such as health and safety in the workplace or social commitment with the environment are values that are becoming increasingly important and, on this point, Frutas y Verduras El Monarca is an example to follow. Last year it developed a regional pilot experience that has now been extended to the entire country. This is the “Solidary Melon” initiative, which it organises along with a supermarket chain, assigning the sales of the melons with this label completely to the Down España Association, with the aim of improving the quality of life of people with Down syndrome. Additionally, along with this project they are promoting other initiatives that show their social commitment with organisations such as Flamenco Rosa (Pink Flamingo), a rowing team the members of which are survivors of breast cancer.

During this campaign, the company, which specialises in the production and marketing of melons, will market 13 million kg of Piel de Sapo and 4 million kg of yellow melons from 500 hectares that includes its own production and that of a dozen partner farmers. To homogenise the quality of the fruit, they select varieties in terms of criteria such as flavour and a good selection of resistances that encourages the minimum use of active substances on their crops to obtain produce that is as sustainable as possible. Not surprisingly, they are already working on obtaining fruit with zero waste.

Amongst El Monarca’s next milestones is increasing its own production using an ecological system (last year it obtained its ecological certification) and currently it is developing R&D trials to optimise water usage and to allow savings of between 20-25% to be made using controlled deficit irrigation strategies.

Within this segment for export, Rijk Zwaan has Dolsura RZ, a variety that is similar to Ricura RZ, but with a hardier plant. It includes resistance to powdery mildew, its skin is darker and it has a longer post-harvest shelf life, ideal for travelling to more distant destinations. Both of them are encompassed in the Mellissimo® concept, a line of genetic development initiated with Ricura and followed by Bravura RZ (early segment in Spain, Brazil and Senegal) in which the seed company groups together varieties for export, with an intense flavour, high Brix degree and an impressive post-harvest.

For the national market the new development is Mesura RZ, a larger Piel de Sapo for early plantations and that is now being introduced in La Mancha, and is ideal both for the early and the late segments. It brings outer quality thanks to a very pleasant netting and golden colour and its strong plant allows it to bear many kilos and obtain the flavour and visual characteristics needed at a time of year when the temperatures are still mild.

This variety completes Rijk Zwaan’s Piel de Sapo catalogue, comprised of Finura RZ (medium cycle) and Mesura RZ (early and late La Mancha cycle).

Bayer is undergoing a consolidation process for the melon varieties that it has been introducing in recent years, and it has two lines with which it is going to take a strong stand: Galkia (with the flavour of the traditional Galia and a long shelf life) and Charentais, for the middle and late cycle.

We interviewed Francisco Solera, Crop Sales Manager for Melons, who told us about the strong points of both segments and revealed one of the great assets of the Galkia Kirene F1, Kinder F1 and Kinetic F1: its unmistakeable ripeness indicator. “When it reaches its perfect point of ripeness, the skin colour turns from green to yellow. This guarantees the inner quality (flavour and aroma) and it could contribute to a recovery in the demand by consumers, who in recent years have stopped eating Galia melons in favour of other types due to a lack of the expected flavour and ripeness.

Additionally, its Galkia flavour line offers a greater agronomic resistance to Aphids.

In the Charentais range, a melon type that is gaining ground

in the Spanish sector and that has already reached the level of the Cantaloupe melon, the company is offering a new catalogue that completes the entire national production period from May to mid July. This year 5 varieties are being consolidated: Kenobi F1 (early), Primabel F1 (middle), Arum F1 (late) and Gustabel F1 and Delibel F1 (extra late).

In El Ejido, Intersemillas presented its range of produce with different typologies in all the sizes with a common denominator: internal quality. And the fact is that, as its slogan states, they are committed to ‘Quality and Improvement following Tradition’. In total, they have 14 commercial varieties.

Otra de las novedades es Reina Negra F1, comercial desde hace dos años. Como Cálida F1, es una negra triploide, pero de gran calibre (7,5 kg de media). Su piel, de un intenso color negro, tiene rayas de la misma tonalidad, mientras que su carne tiene un buen nivel de grados Brix, características que se completan con buenos aspectos agronómicos.

Entre las rayadas triploides destaca Cebra F1, y Reina Linda F1. El rayado de la primera es más oscuro, y su calibre es algo mayor (entre 6 y 7 kg frente a los 5-6 de Reina Linda F1). “En un mercado tan competitivo como el de la sandía, tener una variedad como ésta supone una ventaja, porque en mercados como Alemania la calidad se valora y se paga muy bien”, apunta el ejecutivo. Por su parte, Reina Linda F1 se ha posicionado en el mercado ecológico gracias a su excelente germinación y su precocidad. “Poder cogerla una semana antes que otras variedades supone un mayor valor comercial”. Su carne, muy firme, presenta una gran resistencia a la sobre maduración y es idónea para la exportación.

Durante el evento los asistentes pudieron conocer otras variedades como Mini Micro F1, su primera microsemilla, de corteza rayada con un calibre de 1,5-1,7 kg cada vez más demandada para cultivos ecológicos, y Graciosa F1, referente en sandías de carne amarilla.

The stripes on the first one are darker and it is slightly larger (between 6 and 7 kg compared to the 5-6 kg of Reina Linda F1). “On a market as competitive as the watermelon one, having a variety like this means an advantage, because on markets such as Germany, quality is highly valued and very well paid,” the executive points out. On the other hand, Reina Linda F1 has reached a position on the market thanks to its excellent germination and early ripening. “Being able to harvest it a week before other varieties means greater commercial value.” Its very firm flesh shows a great resistance to over-ripeness and it is perfect for export.

Víctor García del Águila, Product Manager de Cucurbitáceas para Iberia, explica a Fruit Today que este material, ya comercial en Italia, llamó la atención durante las jornadas de puertas abiertas del año pasado y fruto de este interés estudiaron su adaptación a España. “Tiene precocidad, firmeza de carne, un color intenso y alta capacidad de cuaje, de esta forma alcanzamos el rendimiento de producción óptimo para esta tipología con un mayor número de piezas por planta”.

Party es el más novedoso y ha captado el interés de la distribución por el tono dorado de su piel. Su alto contenido en azúcar y su textura firme y crujiente, unidos a un calibre de 1,3-2 kg son otros de los valores de este melón de ciclo medio en Murcia.

Con Maillot, muchas empresas murcianas están completando el ciclo en La Mancha gracias a su buen calibre para tardío. Y pronto se podrían interesar por otra novedad, Azenor (precomercial), que con una excelente producción asegura el calibre en las plantaciones más tempranas.

urante la pasada edición de Infoagro Exhibition celebrada en Aguadulce (Almería), la casa de semillas Takii Seed presentó dos variedades de melón Galia desarrolladas para invernadero en la zona de Almería: Besodoble F1 (TRF182) y Bulería F1 (TRF535B). El primero es para siembras tempranas o medias, pudiendo plantarse desde la última semana de enero a la primera quincena de febrero. El segundo, Bulería F1 (TRF535B), para siembras tardías con plantaciones a partir de la segunda quincena de febrero.

La asistente de ventas de Takii Seed, Ana Portero, ha explicado a Fruit Today que estos materiales presentan un interesante valor añadido, ya que cuando el fruto alcanza el nivel óptimo de maduración (en torno a los 12 grados Brix), la piel torna a un color amarillo intenso. De 32 Fruittoday

During the last edition of Infoagro Exhibition held in Aguadulce (Almería), the seed company Takii Seed presented two varieties of Galia melon developed for greenhouse cultivation in the Almeria region: Besodoble F1 (TRF182) and Bulería F1 (TRF535B). Por otro lado, sus ventas han crecido el 9,4% en su último año fiscal y ha aumentado su plantilla en más de 1.000 personas. Lo que la consolida en el top 5 de la distribución alimentaria española con un 4,1% de cuota de mercado a finales de 2016 (4,3% en el primer trimestre de este año).

Para este 2017 se espera la apertura de 30-40 tiendas, una cifra que Lidl espera sea más o menos anual en los años venideros.

El objetivo marcado por la compañía en un futuro cercano es alcanzar los 800-850 supermercados en España.

La proximidad de Condis La cadena de supermercados Condis, propiedad de la familia Condal, ha lanzado una nueva enseña de supermercado de proximidad, bajo la marca ‘Tu Súper’, con una superficie de 400 metros y que cuenta con 15 establecimientos. E

n el año 2000 el gigante italiano exportaba casi 400 mil toneladas de fruta frente a las 300 mil de España.

En 2005, España alcanza a las ventas italianas, situándose en el mismo rango. A partir de este año, la evolución de las cifras de exportación españolas son constantes, al tiempo que la exportación italiana cae en picado y baja hasta los 300 mil kilos en 2013.

Desde 2014, España supera las 800 mil toneladas de fruta vendida fuera de sus fronteras y continúa manteniendo esta situación de privilegio. En el orden productivo, 2016 significó la consolidación de su liderazgo (1.382.400 toneladas) frente a su más directo “rival cuantitativo”, Italia, que

tuvo una cosecha de 1.262.130 toneladas.

La acertada reconversión varietal, la entrada en producción de nuevas plantaciones y el éxito del paraguayo han sido algunos de los parámetros que manera paulatina han ido emplazando a España como líder absoluto en el sector. Con todo y con ello, no es oro todo lo que reluce, ya que el sector ha estado y está sometido a una gran presión de precios, provocado no sólo por los desajustes que se producen en la cadena de formación de precios (y donde el que más sufre es el propio productor), sino también por su estructura atomizada o por la coerción que ejercen determinadas cadenas en su batalla por ofrecer el precio más barato.

Girona ofrece cifras negativas y claramente se decanta por la manzana.

Valoraciones por especies Siguiendo con el caso catalán, la producción de melocotón rojo sube un 8%, pero respecto a la tendencia marcada entre los años 2011-2016, la cifra se convierte en -2%. Desde 2014-15 hay menos de 5.000 hectáreas de melocotón rojo. Y los arranques continúan.

Sin embargo, la apuesta se ha hecho por la nectarina, que crece un 15% aunque también se frena (en la actualidad las plantaciones suman 8.000 hectáreas) La producción de paraguayo será un 16% superior a la del año pasado. La media de los últimos cinco años es de más 38%, con una clara tendencia a no seguir evolucionando.

Este será el primer año con un incremento en producción de pavía, con un 2%. La pavía registró una media de -31% entre 20112016 porque se iba arrancando de forma sostenida.

The yellow-skinned plum Blondie 79 is characterised as being an early variety, large in size, with resistant skin and that is quite productive. Another of the research lines is aimed at obtaining varieties with increased post-harvest. Therefore, work is being carried out to adapt varieties of nectarine, flat nectarine and peach developed along with the Chilean team from Andes Nursery Association (ANA) to Spanish weather and cultivation conditions. This collaboration has responded to the “transit time” problem that is such a concern for the sector, bringing export horizons that are increasingly further away.

Using its collaboration with Chile, they will adapt Spanish varieties to the exporters’ “transit time” On the other hand, the excellent results by the references that are already consolidated such as Argos and Extreme are also worth mentioning. El albaricoque es un producto snack, una fruta que se corresponde con los nuevos modos de consumo actuales. Con una investigación siempre muy innovadora, la fruta es cada vez más atractiva visualmente y de mayor calidad gustativa.

¿Qué aporta Sushi en su panorama varietal?

Se trata de una fruta muy precoz ya que llega una semana antes que Tsunami. Es una variedad autofértil, de calibre segunda, con una buena presentación y gustativamente es el mejor dentro de su rango de maduración.

Con un invierno tan duro como el que hemos tenido, es patente que el cambio climático es una realidad, algunas compañías están buscando variedades que se adapten a él. ¿Qué puede comentarme al respecto?

Todas las variedades provienen de nuestro campo de experimentación, situado a 7 metros sobre el nivel del mar, con 350 horas de frío al año. Los ensayos se realizan en las situaciones más extremas para que los resultados finales no defrauden.

Nuestra investigación se orienta hacia variedades low chilling donde hacemos mucho hincapié en la calidad gustativa. Estas se adaptarán más fácilmente en el conjunto de las diferentes zonas de producción. ¿Por qué cree que existe este resurgir del albaricoque dentro de la gama de hueso?

Sus ensayos están muy enfocados tanto en un periodo temprano de la temporada como en el más tardío. No obstante, ¿puede indicarme cuál es el mejor material que posee Escande para la temporada central?

Hoy en día, nuestra gama varietal está completa, desde muy precoz, antes de Tsunami, hasta tardía, después de Mistral. Como complemento a Kioto, tenemos dos variedades muy productivas y de excelente calidad gustativa, Ninja y Manga. ¿El futuro albaricoque será de carne naranja o de carne roja como ya se está dando en otras categorías?

Trabajamos con las dos gamas, naranja y roja. Son directamente los productores y sus mercados los que han de decidir qué tipo de carne deben desarrollar.

Me específica, para las diferentes áreas mediterráneas de producción, ¿cuáles son las variedades de su firma más apropiadas?

Nuestra investigación va encaminada a las variedades autofértiles, con pocas horas de frío. Estos criterios permiten una buena adaptación a las diferentes zonas.

What does Sushi bring to your variety panorama?

It is a very early fruit that is ready a week before Tsunami. It is a self-fertilising variety, second calibre, with good presentation and on the palate it is the best within its ripening range.

With the hard winter we have had, it is obvious that climate change is a reality. Some companies are looking for varieties that adapt to it. What can you tell me on this point?

All the varieties come from out experimentation field, located 7 metres above sea level, with 350 hours of cold per year. The trials are carried out in more extreme situations in order to ensure that the end results are not disappointing.

Our research is aimed at low chilling varieties, where we put a great deal of emphasis on the taste quality.

It will be easier for these to adapt to the different producing regions as a whole.

Why do you think that apricots have made a come-back within the stone range?

The apricot is a snack product, a fruit that corresponds to today’s new eating habits. With research that is always highly innovative, the fruit is becoming more and more attractive visually and with greater taste quality.

The trials are highly focused both on the early period of the season and on the later period. However, can you tell me which is the best material that Escande has for the middle of the season?

Today our variety range is complete, from very early, before Tsunami, to the later period, after Mistral. As a complement to Kioto, we have two very productive varieties with excellent taste quality: Ninja and Manga.

Will the apricot of the future have orange flesh or will it be red, as is occurring in other categories?

We are working on both ranges, orange and red.

The producers and their markets are the ones who directly decide what type of flesh they should develop.

For the different Mediterranean production areas, could you specify which are the most suitable varieties from your company?

Our research is aimed at the self-fertilising varieties, with few hours of cold. These criteria allow a good adaptation to the different regions.

The goal is to obtain different ranges of the same fruit that are profitable for the producer and that are adaptable to all the levels of the chain (long shelf life, less wastage), but without ever

forgetting the taste guarantee of taste for consumers. “It must be understood that a successful new variety on the market needs around 10 to 12 years of research. Our next challenge will be flat nectarines.”

This year the company is taking on new markets through distribution organised in Portugal with the Sonae Group and in Switzerland with Migros.

Regarding the dynamism of the Spanish market, the executive believes that “the large companies are interested in continuing to plant and innovate in round fruit, as well as in flat peaches, where the start of a new cycle is being seen since many plantations have become obsolete.”

The success of REGAL’IN™ is based on the offer of the same flavour and presentation from the season’s start to finish, with a post-harvest life of up to 30 days by ship, an aspect that has meant ASF’s fruit has been successful both in Chile and in South Africa, and is highly valued when dealing with the long export times to Asia.

As a result of 6 years’ research, they have developed AgriAlgae®, a range of biostimulant products, which may be used for all kinds of crops (it is certified for Ecological Farming). It is a nutritional supplement based on a micro algae compound that makes plants assimilate the nutrients applied to them better. Using very small amounts, “exceptional” results are obtained, both regarding yield and quality (better colour, higher level of sugars, tougher skin…). A clear example of this is stone fruit and, in fact, many companies are already using AgriAlgae®. “In this type of crop, there is a problem with animal amino acids. In order to be able to use them they have to be subjected

to very aggressive processes and the amino acids experience some changes that in stone fruits can become toxic and literally burn the production. With our product, they maintain their characteristics, with some amino acids that the plant knows how to recognise and use, bringing greater quality, setting rate, fattening, brix degrees, colour, tougher skin… And all of this with a very reasonable price, which provides more kilos per hectare,” Rodríguez-Villa affirms.

The success of the products have led the company to market its range in destinations such as China or Kyrgyzstan, and they are already opening up markets in Japan, Vietnam and Latin America.

They are also present in much of Europe, South Africa and their next target is to open up trade networks in North Africa.

AlgaEnergy has two production plants, one in Madrid and another in Arcos de la Frontera.

In the second, it has integrated a circular economy system along with Iberdrola. The energy company channels its CO2 emissions to cultivate the micro algae, since this is the main nutrient of these microorganisms, which is fixed using photosynthesis, with the subsequent benefit for the environment. For every 5 l. of AgriAlgae® used by a farmer, he has also contributed to eliminating up to 2kg of CO2 that would have been issued to the atmosphere.

“We have seen the case of detecting a fault in the cooling equipment of a container coming from Ecuador and that was on the way to Saint Petersburg.

The system is ideal for exporting stone fruit to China Amongst the advantages of this system is the possibility of using it on any means of transport (the measuring system travels inside the shipment); the fact that the measurement of the parameters is carried out independently (it is not subject to the interest of any of the parties); it allows the opening of the doors to be detected with an anti-break in system and also, its price is extremely competitive (€ 50/shipment).

Currently the company is involved in a R&D project to develop systems that allow the internal temperature of fruit flesh to be measured using probes. If everything goes to plan, this new step will become a reality for the next edition of Fruit Attraction and marketing will start next campaign.

Cajamar y la I+D en eficiencia hídrica El último estudio sobre agua en el que colabora la Estación Experimental consiste en un sistema inteligente y automatizado para optimizar el aporte y ahorrar tiempo al agricultor

omo entidad profundamente arraigada en el territorio y con un marcado carácter social, Cajamar ha desarrollado diferentes estudios de investigación sobre el agua, el bien más preciado para la agricultura, y ha editado diferentes publicaciones de interés sobre la materia. La más reciente ha sido “Los mercados de agua en España. Presente y perspectivas”, publicado en marzo del año pasado, precedido por otros textos de gran calado como “La economía del agua de riego en España. Una perspectiva regional”, galardonado con el Premio al Mejor Libro Agrario 2010. Ya anteriormente, en 2007, publicaron el estudio “Uso del agua de riego en los cultivos en invernadero’, con el objetivo de optimizar los recursos hídricos y reducir los problemas

En materia de eficiencia hídrica, Almería es líder a nivel nacional. “Su modelo bajo plástico preserva las plantaciones de la acción del viento y minimiza los efectos de la radiación, evitando la pérdida de agua por transpiración y ahorrando un 40% de

la optimización de los recursos hídricos y aborda un nuevo estudio junto con Santiago Bonachela y la Universidad de Almería. La investigación, financiada por el INIA y liderada por el IRTA (responsable del proyecto), cuenta con la participación de CICYTEX y la empresa Lab Ferrer de Lleida, y versa sobre la automatización del riego en cultivos. Los trabajos, que comenzaron en 2015 y conclui-

por cada metro cúbico de agua de riego gastado en un cultivo de tomate al aire libre en España se obtienen 8 kilos de tomates, mientras que en un invernadero de Almería se obtienen 35 kilos.

Cajamar and R&D in water efficiency The latest water study in which the Experimental Station has taken part consists of an intelligent and automated system to optimise input and save time for farmers.

As an organisation deeply rooted in the territory, with a markedly social nature, Cajamar has developed different research studies about water, the most valuable asset for agriculture, and it has prepared different publications of interest on the subject. The most recent was ‘The water markets in Spain. Present and future,’ published in March last year, preceded by other far-reaching texts such as ‘The economy of irrigation water in Spain. A regional outlook,’ awarded with the Prize for the Best Agricultural Book 2010.

Prior to this, in 2007, they published the study ‘Use of irrigation water in greenhouse crops,’ aimed at optimising the water resources and reducing the environmental problems related to this subject. With some of the conclusions reached, they published the calendar ‘Irrigation doses for fruit and vegetable crops under glass in Almeria,’ a very useful guide that today continues to be valid as a road map for the producers in the province.

On the subject of water efficiency, Almeria is a national leader. “Its model under plastic saves the plantations from the wind action and minimises the effects of radiation, preventing water loss due to transpiration and saving 40% of water compared to other systems such as open air crops,” states María Dolores Fernández, a researcher from the Cajamar Experimental Station, Las Palmerillas. Additionally, according to a study by the FAO, on a worldwide scale, greenhouse crops require 30% less water than open air plantations. To illustrate this, an example is given: for every cubic metre of irrigation water used on an open air tomato crop in Spain 8 kilos of tomatoes are obtained, whilst in a greenhouse in Almeria the figure is 35 kilos.

Currently the Las Palmerillas Experimental Station

has gone a step further on the route to optimisation of water resources and it has taken on a new study, along with Santiago Bonachela and the University of Almeria. The research, funded by INIA and led by IRTA (Food and Agriculture Research and Technology Institute) which is in charge of the project, also has the participation of CICYTEX and the company Lab Ferrer from Lerida, and it is working on the automation of crop irrigation. The work, which started in 2015 and will end in October of this year, has been divided up into crop groups: Cajamar and the UAL are researching tomato irrigation in soil under plastic; IRTA is working with pear and almond trees; Cicytex, with olive and plum trees; and Lab Ferrer is taking care of the soil sensors.

“The aim is to combine the ICTs, the knowledge of the soil requirements for different crops and the soil sensors to design an intelligent, automated system that saves time for the farmers and helps them to measure the input of the irrigation water, optimising the water resources in terms of what is happening in real time,” Fernández explains. To do this they are using smart software developed by the IRTA, combining it with Cajamar’s PrHo v 2.0 software data (this may be downloaded free of charge from its web site and the amount of water needed by the plant calculated).

In October, the final results will be known and we will surely be able to talk about a new advance on the subject of water optimisation.

Para ello utilizan un software inteligente desarrollado por el IRTA, combinándolo con los datos del software PrHo v 2.0 de Cajamar (este último puede descargarse de forma gratuita en su página web, y calcula cuánta agua necesita la planta). En la España húmeda, a 0,02 Mar y Vícar afrontarán los proyectos de Acuamed con inversiones propias. Urge también acometer una desalobradora en la Balsa del Sapo para evitar el vertido de 8 Hm3 de agua al mar cada año.

n Almería, la carestía endémica de recursos hídricos ha hecho que la provincia sea, junto con Israel, el lugar del mundo con mayor rentabilidad en el ahorro del agua (es la cuna del goteo en España. Entró desde Israel en el ‘72). Pero al ritmo que avanza el sector agrícola (en 2016/2017 produjeron 3.375.970 toneladas de frutas y hortalizas en 55.195 hectáreas, según datos de Cajamar), no se podrá sostener esta situación.

El pasado mes de septiembre desde FERAL (Federación de Regantes de Almería) constituyeron la Mesa del Agua para canalizar la defensa de los intereses de los regantes almerienses. A principios de 2017 crearon el Círculo por el Agua, junto con la Mesa del Agua de la Región de Murcia y el Foro Pro Agua de Alicante.

Su objetivo es conseguir agua y a precios razonables.

Se trata de una situación que se dilata en el tiempo. En el Almanzora llevan desde 2012 esperando la puesta en marcha de una desaladora que aportaría 20 Hm³ y que quedó inutilizada tras un temporal. Actualmente la zona tiene un “déficit de 35-40 Hm³ entre la que falta y la que se podría estar usando”, asegura el presidente de FERAL y portavoz de la Mesa del Agua, José Antonio Fernández.

En Níjar y Bajo Andarax la desaladora de Carboneras se ha quedado pequeña y los regantes reclaman una ampliación urgente.

Además, en el Poniente almeriense la desaladora puesta en marcha hace unos meses tiene un problema: los Ayuntamientos no tienen infraestructuras para aprovechar el agua al 100%. Ante esto, Roquetas de

Last September, FERAL (Federation of Irrigators from Almeria) established the Water Table to channel the defence of the interests of the irrigators from Almeria. At the beginning of 2017, they created the Circle for Water, along with the Water Table of the Region of Murcia and the Pro-Water Forum of Alicante. The aim is to obtain water at reasonable prices.

In Almeria, the endemic lack of water has meant that the province, along with Israel, is the place where the greatest profitability is made from water saving (it is the cradle of drip irrigation in Spain, which . “We proposed paying for the piping and bringing the water from the Guadalfeo basin to the Benínar reservoir and connecting it from there through the unfinished Water Highway, but as yet we have not received a reply.”

As if this was not enough, in the State General Budget investments on the subject of water have been cut by 61% in Almeria, dropping from 57.9 million euros budgeted in 2016 by the state company, Acuamed to 22.5 million for 2017.

a Plataforma en Defensa de los Regadíos del Condado y Freshuelva han instado a que se apruebe ya la Declaración de Impacto Ambiental (DIA) para el trasvase de los 4,99 hm³, ya que, a pesar de estar aprobado, de momento, el agua superficial no llega a 200 hectáreas de cultivo en el Condado porque falta este trámite, para el que ya se cuenta con el informe de la Junta de Andalucía.

La asociación onubense de exportadores y productores también ha recordado que la solución para los agricultores, que llevan más de 30 años reclamando la normalización de la situación, pasa por el trasvase de los 15 hm³ desde la cuenca del Guadiana al Guadalquivir, sobre el que “no se entiende que no se haya aprobado ya, cuando hace meses que pasó el visto bueno de la Comisión de Agricultura del Congreso y fue aprobado por el Senado”, puntualizó el gerente de Freshuelva, Rafael Domínguez.

Es lamentable que no se hayan hecho antes obras como las de la canalización del río Chillar de Nerja para evitar tirar agua al mar.

Los técnicos calculan que se están vertiendo al mar 750Hm³ del Guadiaro y el Genal, y con 30 Hm³ toda la costa tropical tendría el problema resuelto. La inversión no es tan cara y se amortizaría de inmediato. El sector está dispuesto a colaborar porque tenemos buenas tierras, agricultores y técnicos especializados en tropicales y nuevos empresarios que están deseando invertir.

Necesitamos infraestructuras con urgencia, las tropicales no pueden esperar a que llueva. La iniciativa privada en la Axarquía es lo suficientemente fuerte para no tener que esperar las ayudas de la Administración. Las empresas deberíamos unirnos con los productores para repartir el gasto y terminar las obras porque hay miles de familias que dependen del sector subtropical.

Hay un problema en el Pantano de la Viñuela y el acuífero de Vélez también está en unos niveles muy bajos. No se están cumpliendo las normas establecidas, hay gente que está regando por encima de la cota 140, a pesar de que no está autorizado, y esto supone un peligro para el pantano y los acuíferos naturales. Las Administraciones no están haciendo nada, son tan culpables como los agricultores.

Es necesario que se pongan en marcha medidas de control para gestionar los recursos hídricos porque se está robando el agua.

No hay una actitud proactiva en relación al Plan Hidrológico. No tiene ningún tipo de estrategia en materia hídrica desde hace casi 30 años.

Enrique Colilles, Trops En Málaga tenemos embalses y pocas canalizaciones. En algunas zonas se tira el agua y en otras como la Axarquía tenemos sequía y restricciones. El mundo nos reclama una producción de aguacate y mango como la que somos capaces de producir, ya que tenemos el clima, el suelo y la mano de obra… lo único que no depende de nosotros que es el agua, no lo tenemos porque es la administración quien tiene las competencias.

Javier Hernández, Tropical Millenium Debemos tomar ejemplo de otros países como Israel que organizan la actividad agrícola pensando en primer lugar en cómo gestionar de forma eficiente y utilizan al máximo todas las fuentes de aguas, incluyendo las residuales.

Se están riendo de los agricultores de Granada. Llevamos casi 30 años desde que se terminó la presa de Béznar y la de Rules se finalizó en 2005. Lo lógico hubiera sido ponerlas a funcionar para rentabilizarlas. Y además se tiran entre 4.000 y 5.000 litros/segundo del río Guadalfeo para que se paseen los patos.

Las canalizaciones deberían alcanzar la cota 400 dirección Almuñécar y Castell de Ferro, pasando por Motril y Salobreña. El año pasado se liberaron 4 millones de euros para el proyecto de Impacto Ambiental necesario para comenzar la obra, y después hay otros dos proyectos pendientes, pero con los 250.000 euros de los Presupuestos no hay ni para empezar.

n 2016, el principal consumo de cartón ondulado en España se correspondió al sector de productos agrícolas, con un 23,2%; seguido del de productos alimenticios (16,5%), de bebidas (15%), y de transformación de cartón ondulado (11,4%). Con un porcentaje menor se encuentran sectores como el audio, la electrónica y la automoción (8,7%), productos industriales (7%) o los productos químicos y perfumerías (5%).

En total, la cifra se eleva a 2.951.000 de toneladas de papel consumido en 2016, según se desprende de informe sectorial de la Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Envases y Embalajes de Cartón Ondulado (AFCO).

El 52,42% estaría localizado en la región de Asia/Pacífico, seguido de Europa con el 21,97%, Norte América con el 17,15%, América del Sur y Centroamérica con el 5,61%, y 2,85% en el resto del mundo.

Preference for cardboard amongst consumers A recent study prepared by AFCO and by Feedback Estrategia e Investigación Sociológica, placed corrugated cardboard as the container that enjoys the best environmental reputation amongst Spaniards. The barometer entitled, “Containers and packaging: society’s perception”, places this material as the most sustainable at 76.6%, compared to plastic which obtained 10.7%. In addition, in the case of fruit and vegetables, 70.5% of those surveyed were more inclined towards single use boxes that can be recycled such as those made from paper and cardboard because, in their opinion, they are more hygienic.

“Lo que no se mide no mejora” El Sistema de control de productividad en planta de Hispatec permite obtener datos en tiempo real y con gran precisión.

urante la pasada edición de Infoagro Exhibition la firma almeriense presentó algunas de sus últimas novedades. La más destacable es el Sistema de control de productividad en planta. El presidente de la empresa, José Luis Molina, explicó a Fruit Today que con esta herramienta se obtiene la máxima precisión en el control de operaciones de confección en almacén, lo que resulta especialmente interesante en el caso de productos de alto valor añadido unitario como los berries, las frutas tropicales o los tomates tipo cherry. “La báscula pesa en tiempo real con alta precisión, así se evita la pérdida de dinero tanto al pesar de menos (porque lo rechazarían en destino), como al pesar de más”. Otra de sus características es la posibilidad de medir la productividad y efectividad de los empleados, a través de una tarjeta de identificación personal que monitoriza su actividad. Toda esa información, integrada y en tiempo real, sirve para completar la trazabilidad de una empresa desde un punto de vista informacional, económico y logístico a través de su solución de gestión integral ERPAgro. “Nosotros facilitamos que esos tres flujos vayan en paralelo, desde el momento en que se siembra hasta que el producto llega a destino, para que nuestra hortofruticultura siga siendo líder a nivel mundial”. Cabe recordar que fue la tecnología de Hispatec la que permitió demostrar en 2011 que los pepinos españoles no habían sido los causantes de la alerta alimentaria europea.

El sector hace cada vez más esfuerzos por tecnificarse y avanzar, y en ese sentido empresas como Hispatec suponen un gran espaldarazo porque “lo que no se mide, no 60 Fruittoday

mejora”, asegura Molina. A nivel de campo, han desarrollado la aplicación Campogest, dirigida a los técnicos agrícolas. Esta app permite al técnico agrícola monitorizar la actividad de los agricultores (geolocalización incluida) y crear en tiempo real recomendaciones de tratamientos y planes de abonado. De esta forma se puede llevar a cabo la gestión de fincas y cultivos desde dispositivos tan habituales como un móvil o tablet.

The sector is making more and more efforts to become technologically-inclined and to move forward and on this point, companies such as Hispatec mean a great boost because “if it isn’t measured, it won’t improve”, Molina guarantees. In the fields, they have developed the application Campogest, aimed at agricultural technicians. This app allows agricultural technicians to monitor the activity of the farmers (including geolocation) and to create recommendations for treatments and fertilising plans in real time. In this way, the management of farms and crops can be carried out from devices that we normally carry with us, such as a mobile phone or tablet.

l inicio de los cultivos de invierno el nivel de plagas es más bajo, sin embargo, lo que parece una ventaja se vuelve un contratiempo, ya que la población de insectos beneficiosos (fauna auxiliar) merma al no tener de qué alimentarse. Para solucionar esta problemática, Agrobío ha desarrollado los denominados ‘ácaros presa’, un ‘alimento’ suplementario para los depredadores con el que se favorece su proliferación y buena forma. Posteriormente, una vez llega la plaga, la fauna auxiliar prefiere alimentarse de ésta antes que del ácaro presa, por lo que no interfiere en la capacidad de depredación de los ácaros.

La Suelta de alimento en cultivo ha sido un éxito en pepino

Desde un primer momento la firma lanzó esta estrategia de ‘Suelta de alimento directamente en cultivo’ para pepino invernado y fue “todo un éxito”, explica Isabel Santorromán, del Área de Control de Calidad.

Concretamente, los ensayos realizados en cultivos de pepino de ciclo largo mostraron que soltando estos ácaros presa, se incrementan entre dos y tres veces las poblaciones de Amblyseius swirskii y de Transeius montdorensis en otoño e invierno.

This last aspect allows the bees to save their energy, encouraging a more effective pollination. Tradición e innovación se conjugan en Allium Prodiber La firma valenciana ha apostado fuerte por la diferenciación de sus zonas de producción

A

llium Prodiber es una de las pocas empresas españolas que mantiene producción en tres comunidades distintas (Andalucía, Castilla- La Mancha y Castilla-León) lo que la habilita para tener un suministro pleno de producto.

Con una tradición que abarca más de 4 décadas, tanto en el ámbito productivo como comercial, Allium Prodiber se distingue por su propio saber hacer: la cosecha se realiza de manera mecánica y el producto no se abandona en campo, sino que se traslada al almacén para realizar su secado y corte de raíz. “Nuestro objetivo es evitar las inclemencias del tiempo. Este sistema evita también los posibles problemas que acarrea la dis-

ponibilidad de mano de obra,” explica Oscar Requena, máximo responsable de la empresa.

Su volumen medio de comercialización por campaña ronda los 6 millones de kilos y la sitúa como una de las compañías líderes del sector. Por variedades, el ajo blanco supone un 10% de su total y la cantidad restante se reparte a partes iguales entre la variedad Spring y el ajo morado.

La coyuntura global de mercado supuso un aumento de los precios e importantes ventas a Brasil y Taiwán, que pasó de unas compras de un millón de kilos a unos 14 millones. Así mismo, algunos países americanos demandaron más producto español que fue comercializado a buenos precios.

No en vano, España es el mayor productor europeo y uno de los más importantes a nivel mundial.

Respecto a la pasada campaña, el ejecutivo valenciano señala que supuso una excelente temporada porque la cosecha china resultó un 25% más corta

Sin embargo, el final de campaña fue un tanto difícil, ya que los mercados europeos admitieron más subidas, aunque el mercado en origen sí incrementó.

Tal y como arrojan los datos, la situación de final de campaña fue una tanto peculiar: desde mayo a octubre las exportaciones españolas aumentaron un 30%, de octubre a noviembre se produjo un descenso de un 5% y el pasado mes de enero se volvió a vender más que en 2016. “El sector vendió una media de un 20% más aproximadamente, por lo que este volumen deja de estar en stock y no sobra.”

Las previsiones de la próxima campaña indican que China tendrá más producción que el año pasado, pero la coyuntura social del país, que ha subido su nivel de vida y sus salarios, permitirá vender el producto a precios más elevados. “Creo que resulta bastante improbable que se vuelvan a producir situaciones como las de finales de los 90 o principios del 2000,

ya que los operadores chinos se han dado cuenta que pueden ofrecer producto un poco más elevado de precio y lo venden igual,” remarca el directivo.

Asimismo, Requena considera que “hasta que los stocks, tanto para fresco como para procesado, lleguen a la cota de hace 4 años, podemos prever un mercado fluido, aunque el inicio de campaña puede que no sea tan bueno como se espera .”

Tradition and innovation combined at Allium Prodiber The company from Valencia has made a firm commitment to the differentiation of its production areas.

Allium Prodiber is one of the few Spanish companies that has production in three different regions (Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla-Leon), which allows it to have a complete supply of produce.

With a tradition that goes back over 4 decades, both in production and in sales, Allium Prodiber is distinguished for its know-how: it harvests mechanically and the produce is not left in the fields, it is transferred to the warehouses for drying and root cutting. “Our goal is to avoid adverse weather conditions. This system also prevents any possible problems that may arise due to labour force shortages,” Oscar Requena, the company’s CEO explains.

Its average sales volume per campaign is around 6 million kilos and this makes it into one of the leading companies in the sector. By varieties, white garlic makes up 10% of its total and the remaining amount is divided up equality between the spring variety and purple garlic.

The forecasts for the next campaign indicate that China will have more production than last year, but the country’s social situation, which has raised its standard of living and its salaries, will allow the produce to be sold at higher prices. “I think that it will be quite unlikely that situations such as those experienced at the end of the 1990s or the beginning of the 2000s will occur again, since the Chinese operators have realised that when they offer produce at a slightly higher price, it sells just the same,” the executive remarks.

This overall market situation meant an increase in the prices and important sales to Brazil and Taiwan, which went from sales of one million kilos to around 14 million.

n casa de Mª Dolores Suárez, presidenta de la IGP Ajo Morado, solo se consume Ajo Morado de Las Pedroñeras: “es el de mayor pungencia, sabor, aroma y el que concentra más propiedades saludables, está probado científicamente”. Encargada de difundir y promover los valores de este producto desde 2014, es consciente de la dificultad de competir con un rival como China, el primer productor mundial (copa el 85-90% de la producción total). “Podemos competir en calidad, pero es imposible hacerlo en precio, y lo hacemos en desigualdad de oportunidades debido a las condiciones laborales que imperan en el sector agrícola chino”. Sin embargo, el descenso del 15% de la producción china (equivalente al total producido en España), provocó una “especulación brutal” que benefició a las ventas de ajo español. “Si China sube los precios, el ajo español está salvado porque es de mejor calidad”, asegura Suárez.

cipales importadores estadounidenses empezaran a trabajar con ajo español. Brasil, Haití, Sudáfrica y Australia, son otros de los destinos, aunque su principal cuota de mercado sigue estando en Francia, Italia, Reino Unido y Alemania.

En ajo morado, este año se espera una calidad muy buena si la climatología sigue como en los últimos meses, y a nivel de producción se han mantenido prácticamente las mismas hectáreas (3.500), con un potencial por hectárea de 7.000-8.000 kilos.

Desde que en 2010 se constituyó, la IGP ha fomentado la promoción y la diferenciación del ajo morado respecto a otras variedades foráneas por vía de la calidad y la cercanía a destino.

España es el mayor productor de Europa y uno de los principales consumidores per cápita, con 2 kilos persona/año. “Por un euro de diferencia al año, ¿no merece la pena comprar ajo morado?”.

However, the 15% drop in Chinese production (equivalent to the entire crop produced in Spain), caused a “brutal speculation” that benefitted Spanish garlic sales. “If China raises its prices, Spanish garlic is safe because it has better quality”, Suárez guarantees.

A few cases of fraud detected a while ago with Chinese garlic not paying customs duties, meant that the main North American importers started to work with Spanish garlic. Brazil, Haiti, South Africa and Australia are other destinations, although the main market share continues to be in France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany.

This year the quality of purple garlic is expected to be very good if the weather conditions hold good as in recent months and on a production level virtually the same hectares (3,500) have been maintained, with a potential of 7,000-8,000 kilos per hectare.

Since it was established in 2010, the PGI has developed the promotion and differentiation of purple garlic compared to the other foreign varieties, basing this on its quality and local production.

Spain is the largest producer in Europe and one of the main consumers per capita, with 2 kilos per person/year. “For a difference of one euro per year, is it not worth buying purple garlic?”

“El ajo es un commodity más, no se valora” El desconocimiento del producto condiciona el precio, según La Veguilla

E

l ajo, un producto commodity y muy ligado a la tradición. Como explica Elena Mesas, Supply Chain Assistant de La Veguilla, hay zonas tradicionales de consumo de ajo blanco y otras de ajo morado. Y, más allá del precio, que fijan las cadenas, el cliente no suele variar sus hábitos de compra. “Es un producto desconocido para él e incluso para el comprador del supermercado”.

Desde La Veguilla tratan de superar ese hándicap apostando por todas las herramientas a su alcance, entre ellas el packaging.

Un ejemplo de ello es su blíster de dos y cuatro cabezas de ajo negro que les permiten atraer la atención del consumidor y diferenciarse en el lineal.

Producen, comercializan y llevan a gala ser de Las Pedroñeras Bajo las marcas La Veguilla y El Pilar, producen y venden las cuatro variedades comerciales que existen en Europa: ajo morado, blanco, spring violeta y spring blanco, a las que suman el ajo negro (en su gama desde hace un par de años), el ecológico en todas las variedades (que en su mayoría se destina al mercado UE), y como complemento también comercializan cebolla y cebolla negra.

Todas ellas producidas en Castilla-La Mancha.

El ajo morado representa el 50% de su volumen, buena parte de él bajo la IGP. “Somos del pueblo de Las Pedroñeras y creemos en esta variedad, porque no da sorpresas. Es más resistente, tiene una larga duración.

lo envías al cliente”. Por el contrario, el spring asegura una mayor rentabilidad, porque arroja más kilos por hectárea, aunque de cara a la comercialización tiene más mermas.

Garlic is a commodity that is closely linked to tradition. As Elena Mesas, Supply Chain Assistant from La Veguilla explains, there are regions where traditionally white garlic is eaten and others where purple garlic is more usual. And apart from the price, which is set by the supermarket chains, customers do not usually vary their purchasing habits. “It is an unknown product, even for the supermarket buyer”. At La Veguilla they are attempting to overcome this obstacle by opting to use all the instruments within their reach, amongst which is the packaging. An example of this is their blister of two and four heads of black garlic that attract consumers’ attention and that differentiate their products on the supermarket shelves.

Under the trademarks of La Veguilla and El Pilar, they produce and sell the four commercial varieties existing in Europe: purple, white, spring violet and spring white garlic, to which black garlic has been added (in its range

for the past few years), ecologically grown garlic in all the varieties (mainly sent to the EU market) and as a complement they also market onions and black onions.

All of them produced in Castilla-La Mancha.

Purple garlic represents 50% of its volume, a large part of it under the PGI. “We are from the town of Las Pedroñeras and we believe in this variety, because it doesn’t bring any surprises. It is hardier and it has a long shelf life.

You always feel comfortable when you send it to customers”. On the other hand, spring garlic guarantees greater profitability, because it produces more kilos per hectare, although more wastage occurs when it is marketed.

The company currently reaches all the markets: national (DIA, Gadisa, los Mercados Centrales, Corte Inglés), a large part of Europe, with an important presence in England and Germany; and other countries outside the EU borders, including destinations as varied as the USA, South Africa or Taiwan.

La firma cuenta con una producción “constante y significativa” que ronda los 15 millones de kilos en los últimos 5 años, donde el morado supone aproximadamente el 50% de su volumen total, comercializado íntegramente bajo la IGP Ajo Morado de Las Pedroñeras. “Intentamos defender el producto, nuestro ajo es manchego 100% y avalamos que la gente lo busque”, cuenta Mª José Arellano, gerente de San Isidro El Santo. Entre sus proyectos está la producción de semilla para entregar a los socios libre de virus.

En campaña, en su almacén pueden llegar a haber más de 200 trabajadores y a lo largo del año son entre 160 y 170. Casi todo se hace a mano, incluso el pelado, cabeza por cabeza, con un 90% de mano de obra femenina.

The cooperative from Las Pedroñeras is extending its range with this new reference They serve their customers all year round and at the request of some of them, they have developed a new reference that is being commercially launched this summer: Ajo Santo Negro (Black Saint Garlic).

This home-grown produce is added to the ones they already have, such as purple garlic, spring garlic (violet and white) and national white garlic.

The company has a “constant and significant” production that has reached around 15 million kilos over the past 5 years, where purple garlic makes up approximately 50% of its total volume, solely marketed under the PGI Ajo Morado from Las Pedroñeras. “We are trying to defend the produce, our garlic is 100% from La Mancha and we guarantee that people look for it,” comments Mª José Arellano, manager of San Isidro El Santo. Amongst its projects is the production of virus-free seeds to hand over to its partners.

During the campaign over 200 workers can work in its ware-

house, and between 160 and 170 people work there throughout the year. Virtually everything is done by hand, even the peeling, head by head, with a 90% female labour force.

“We control everything ourselves, from the sowing until the produce is despatched to the customer. We even have our own laboratory created exclusively to support our partners with analyses of soil, water, follicular…

Although we also serve others who seek out our knowhow. We also have several certificates: Globalgap, BRC and IFS, as well as the PGI,” Arellano states.

Nationally, they work directly with Mercadona and with wholesalers, as well as from their online store to reach the general public. Most of their production is sent abroad, where, depending on the year, they market up to 70% of the total, mainly in Europe. “We work with the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Brazil… The price is given by the market, but we always try to find trusted clients who sell our produce as if it were their own.”

l 40% de la superficie de SAT Peregrín se dedica al ajo. Es su segundo producto en importancia tras los cultivos de hoja. La empresa almeriense lleva más de cuatro décadas trabajando en Las Pedroñeras y copa la mitad de la comercialización del morado con IGP. “Dentro de nuestro porcentaje de producción, dedicamos a la IGP un 17%, por las hectáreas declaradas que tenemos en base a la zona geográfica”, detalla Juan Salvador Peregrín, responsable de Ajo en Peregrín.

A nivel comercial, el mercado nacional representa un 40%. “En la mayoría de las cadenas de supermercados españoles verás ajo morado. El morado de Las Pedroñeras se valora muy bien en España y América y Australia”.

El resto de su producción (60%) se dirige al exterior, principalmente a grandes cadenas.

Pedroñete, marquismo llevado al ajo español Hablar de ajo es hablar de Pedroñete, el único ajo español que ha sabido hacer marca y que cuenta con un reconocimiento por parte del consumidor.

E

n un sector en el que las marcas se pueden contar con los dedos de una mano, aún resulta más difícil que un producto como el ajo (considerado de segundo rango) haya sabido salir del anonimato y convertirse en marca.

Coopaman, la entidad manchega que integra a seis cooperativas, es el mayor productor de ajo morado de toda España y Europa.

De los 18 millones de kilos cosechados durante el año pasado, casi el 80% representó la variedad morada. Este ajo se caracteriza por ser de menor tamaño, tener un sabor más penetrante y algo más picante.

No obstante, desde la cooperativa, su director general, David Rodríguez, explica que “a pesar de que nuestra apuesta más sólida se corresponde con la variedad morada, contamos con capacidad suficiente para ofrecer toda una extensa gama que abarca desde el ajo blanco nacional, el spring (violeta y el blanco), hasta las recientes incorporaciones de ajo negro, en nuestro caso proveniente del ajo morado, pues la variedad de ajo morado aporta sin duda elementos diferenciadores y únicos a nuestro ajo negro.

Con los ojos puestos siempre en China, que es el mayor productor mundial y que, a medio y largo plazo influye decisivamente en la coyuntura del sector, la campaña española acaba de empezar. “Aunque los mercados no se encuentran todo lo dinámicos que desearíamos y el ajo chino tiene unos precios inferiores al año pasado, la temporada es larga y el resultado final está todavía por dilucidar.”

“De momento, mientras que los mercados reciben la nueva cosecha, nosotros estamos inmersos en profundizar y conocer las demandas de nuestros clientes”, explica Rafael Polo, director comercial de la cooperativa.

La innovación Coopaman constituye una empresa moderna abierta a nuevas opciones. Fruto de ello es el innovador envase en flow-pack de su marca Pedroñete. “Contamos con un producto de alta calidad, que debe ir acompañado de una presentación acorde y por ello lanzamos el flow-pack, absolutamente innovador respecto a la malla de siempre.”

La intención de la firma es seguir trabajando en esta línea de valorización del producto y no entrar en una guerra de precios. Por ello el 100% de su producto se comercializa bajo el marchamo de calidad que supone la IGP Ajo Morado de Las Pedroñeras.

La superficie de producción de los 400 socios de la entidad se ha incrementado en un 5%. La producción final es una incógnita, pues las condiciones climáticas no han sido tan buenas como el año pasado y en algunas zonas se han tenido incidencias puntuales de granizo o fuertes lluvias, además de temperaturas más elevadas que la media.

Pedroñete, brand name bias brought to Spanish garlic Talking about garlic means talking about Pedroñete, the only Spanish garlic that has known how to make an impression and that is recognised by consumers.

In a sector where the brand names can be counted on the fingers of one hand, it is even more difficult for a product such as garlic (considered as second category) to know how to emerge from anonymity and make a name for itself.

Coopaman, the organisation from La Mancha that is made up of six cooperatives, is the largest purple garlic producer in Spain and Europe.

Of the 18 million kilos harvested last year, the purple variety represents almost 80%. This garlic is characterised by having a better size, a more penetrating flavour and is slightly spicier.

However, the cooperative’s general manager, David Rodríguez, explains that “in spite of the fact that our most solid commitment corresponds to the purple variety, we have sufficient capacity to

be able to offer an extensive range that covers from national white garlic, spring garlic (violet and white), along with the recent incorporations of black garlic, in our case coming from purple garlic, as the purple garlic variety, without any doubt, gives differentiating and unique elements to our black garlic.

Amongst its most recent projects is the enlargement of its installations Always looking towards China, which is the largest producer worldwide and which, in the medium and long term has a decisive influence on the sector’s situation, the Spanish campaign has just started. “Although the markets are not as dynamic as we could have wished for and Chinese garlic has lower prices than last year’s, the season is long and the end result is yet to be seen.”

“At the moment, whilst the markets are receiving the new harvest, we are deeply involved in finding out our customers’ requirements,” Rafael Polo, sales manager for the cooperative explains.

The innovation Coopaman is a modern company, open to new options. And this shows in the innovative flow-pack packaging for its Pedroñete brand. “We have high quality produce, which must be accompanied by a presentation in line with this, and this is the reason for the launch of the flow-pack, which is a complete innovation with respect to the traditional net.”

“Our sales on the national market have increased and the differentiating format has brought added value to our produce, but the best of all is that consumers already identify garlic with its name: Pedroñete.”

The company’s intention is to continue working along this line of product valuation and not to enter a price war. Therefore, 100% of its produce is marketed under the quality hallmark established by the Purple Garlic PGI of Las Pedroñeras.

The production surface area of the 400 partners belonging to the organisation has been increased by 5%. The final production figures are unknown, as the weather conditions have not been as good as last year’s, and in some areas they have had specific incidences of hail storms or strong rainfall, in addition to above average temperatures.

a empresa familiar Terrallana fue pionera en producir ajo negro con un partner nipón (proveedor del afamado chef Martín Berasategui), pero si por algo se les conoce es por su apuesta por el producto ecológico, en el que llevan 30 años trabajando.

Entre sus proyectos más recientes, está la ampliación de sus instalaciones

Producen ajo morado (un 60% del global), violeta y blanco. En los últimos años, apuestan por el ajo “spring” para llegar un mes antes al mercado (se siembra en septiembre y se recolecta en mayo), y evitan, en la medida de lo posible, comprar ajo de otros orígenes para reducir la huella de carbono. “Sólo compramos a Argentina para servir a un cliente que nos lo pide”, cuenta María Moreno, gerente de la empresa.

Con una clara vocación exportadora desde sus inicios (el 99% se destina al exterior, principalmente a supermercados europeos), Terrallana se diferencia de otras em-

presas por su cercanía en el servicio al cliente.

“Somos una empresa familiar y con buena comunicación entre nosotros, hecho que nos facilita un trato muy directo y cercano con el cliente”.

Para este año han plantado unas 100 hectáreas aproximadamente. Entre sus proyectos más recientes, está la ampliación de sus instalaciones para unificar todo el trabajo de secado, pelado y envasado en el mismo lugar.

This family-run company, Terrallana, was a pioneer in producing black garlic with a Japanese partner (supplier of the famous chef Martín Berasategui), but what they are really known for is for their commitment to ecological produce, in which they have 30 years of experience.

They produce purple (60% of the overall turnover), violet and white garlic. In recent years, they have been producing “spring” garlic to arrive on the market a month early (it is sown in September and harvested in May), and as far as possible, they avoid purchasing garlic from other origins to reduce the carbon footprint. “We only purchase from Argentina to serve a customer who asks us for it”, states María Moreno, manager of the company.

With a clear bias towards the export business from its very beginning (99% is sent abroad, mainly to European supermarkets), Terrallana differentiates itself from other companies due to its friendly customer services. “We are a family-run company, with good communication between us, a fact that makes it easier to have a very direct, friendly treatment with customers.”

For this year, they have planted around 100 hectares.

Amongst their most recent projects is the enlargement of their installations to bring together all the work of drying, peeling and packaging under the same roof.

esde el pasado mes de mayo, Apofruit cuenta entre sus socios con la firma de Cesena, Piraccini Secondo.

“Este acuerdo reportará ventajas concretas a las estructuras de ambas empresas. En concreto, para nuestro grupo significará un incremento de la oferta, así como un refuerzo de nuevas áreas productivas y un paso más hacia la especialización de algunos productos como la fruta de verano, la fresa y el kiwi, que representan la producción más fuerte de ambas empresas,” remarcó el director general de Apofruit, Ilenio Bastoni.

Esta incorporación supondrá, cara a la campaña de verano recién iniciada, atender mercados más lejanos, con el objetivo de internacionalizar todavía más la marca.

Por su parte, Valchirio Piraccini, consejero delegado de Piraccini Secondo, señaló que “estar integrado en una organización de esta envergadura, nos permitirá abrir nuevos caminos y participar de las innovaciones varietales de Apofruit, así como de la normativa comunitaria de la OCM, un instrumento fundamental para las compañías agrícolas”.

Por su parte, Piraccini Secondo, compañía que hasta la actualidad ha estado muy volcada en el mercado interior, posee cuatro centrales de confección repartidas por diversas zonas de la geografía italiana (Cesena, Scanzo Jonico, Imola y Velletri).

Su facturación se estima en 20 millones de euros y cuenta con la participación de unos 380 productores.

Mirco Zanotti, presidente de Apofruit, coincidió con su compañero de organización al señalar que “sumar socios es siempre un dato positivo que permite aumentar la base social de la entidad y mantener una mayor presencia capilar sobre todo el territorio.”

El sello IGP sitúa al plátano canario a un nivel superior de reconocimiento y protección y lo posiciona como un producto único que garantiza al consumidor las características propias de la identidad del cultivo plátano canario marcada por el clima, el agua, la tierra y la propia gestión de los productores en las fincas, así como la trazabilidad y controles de calidad en el plátano.

La certificación, realizada por Sohiscert, ha consistido en un proceso de varias semanas de duración, en el que se verifican y comprueban requisitos de cumplimiento tanto en las fincas como en los centros de procesado y maduración.

El acto, que tuvo lugar en la sede de Europlátano en Los Llanos de Aridane, contó con la presencia de viceconsejero de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación del Gobierno de Canarias, Abel Morales y con José Basilio Pérez, consejero de Agricultura, Ganadería y Pesca del Cabildo de La Palma; además de representantes de Sohiscert, Eduardo Merello Álvarez, director gerente y María Fernández Jódar, responsable de auditoría; y, por parte de Europlátano, Francisco Lorenzo Speranzini presidente de la organización 78 Fruittoday

La producción de Europlátano, se caracteriza su alto grado de compromiso y trabajo que garantiza al consumidor un producto de calidad, con mayor sabor y durabilidad; además de su apuesta por la línea ecológica, biológica y orgánica protegiendo la tradición en el cultivo y el capital humano.

Este esfuerzo le ha valido a esta OPP para recibir la certificación GRASP de buenas prácticas sociales, un reconocimiento desarrollado por GlobalGAP.

The certification, carried out by Sohiscert, consisted of a process lasting several weeks, in which compliance requirements were verified and checked both on the farms and in the processing and ripening centres.

The event, which took place at the head offices of Europlátano in Los Llanos de Aridane, was attended by the Deputy Minister for Farming, Fishing, and Food from the Government of the Canary Islands, Abel Morales, and José Basilio Pérez, Councillor for Farming, Livestock, and Fishing from the Council of La Palma; as well as representatives from Sohiscert, Eduardo Merello Álvarez, Managing Director, and María Fernández Jódar, audit manager; and from Europlátano, Francisco Lorenzo Speranzini, Chairman of the organisation of producers, and Antonio Javier Luis Brito, Manager of the OPB. For Francisco Lorenzo Speranzini “this accreditation confirms that the effort made by the producers and the personnel from Europlátano to improve the produce quality has been worthwhile and proof of this are the acknowledgements that Gabaceras and Canary Gold are obtaining.”

Europlátano’s production is characterised by its high level of commitment and work that guarantees consumers quality produce, with greater flavour and longer shelf life; in addition to its commitment to the ecological, biological and organic line protecting the tradition both for the crop and the labour force.

This effort has been the route taken by this OPB to receive the GRASP certification of good social practices, a recognition developed by GlobalGAP.

Campaña de los logos RUP Las regiones ultraperiféricas se unen para promocionar la calidad de sus productos

as Regiones Ultraperiféricas (RUP) de Francia, Portugal y España se han unido en una campaña de promoción que se extenderá hasta 2019 para dar a conocer el sello que distingue la calidad de estos productos agroalimentarios obtenidos a miles de kilómetros de la Europa continental.

Los productos de las RUP están sujetos a las mismas normas de calidad que los del resto de la UE

La campaña, bajo el lema “El logo de las Regiones Ultraperiféricas. Nacido con Estrella Europea”, está abanderada por los productores de plátano y banana de las Islas Canarias (España), Madeira (Portugal), Martinica y Guadalupe (ambas francesas) y llegará no sólo a esos tres países, sino también a Bélgica, Alemania y Polonia.

Entre las actividades, destaca la que se llevará a cabo a bordo de la goleta de tres mástiles ‘Le Marité’, que recorrerá 18 ciudades europeas y donde los visitantes podrán ver una exposición fotográfica que muestra instantáneas de los diferentes productos cultivados en esas regiones.

Las velas de ese barco mostrarán asimismo de manera destacada el logo de las RUP, compuesto por un sol, una onda azul -que representa el mar-, una onda verde -que representa la tradición agrícola- y el nombre de la región ultraperiférica de la que procede.

El programa también incluye un proyecto pedagógico en el que los escolares estudiarán las RUP de Europa y su producción de plátanos y bananas.

Asimismo, participarán en ferias de alimentación en los seis países de la campaña que se complementarán con acciones de comunicación en medios y a través tanto de Facebook como de la página web www.exotictasteofeurope.eu.

Otro de los objetivos es que, al igual que el

sector platanero, otros como el del tomate o la papaya fomenten su promoción mediante este logo que es una manifestación clara del valor añadido que la Europa no continental puede aportar en seguridad y calidad alimentaria.

Logo campaign for the outermost regions The outermost regions join together to promote the quality of their produce The Outermost Regions (OR) of France, Portugal and Spain have joined together in a promotion campaign that will continue until 2019, in order to promote the stamp that distinguishes the quality of these agrifood products, obtained thousands of kilometres from the European continent.

The sails of this vessel will also show the OR’s logo prominently, composed of a sun, a blue wave (representing the sea), a green wave (representing the agricultural tradition) and the name of the outermost region it comes from.

The campaign, under the slogan “The logo of the Outermost Regions. Born under a European Star”, is the torch-bearer for banana and plantain producers from the Canary Islands (Spain), Madeira (Portugal) and Martinique and Guadalupe (both French) and it will reach not only these three countries, but it will also be extended to Belgium, Germany and Poland.

The programme also includes an educational project where schoolchildren will study the OR of Europe and their banana and plantain productions.

Amongst the activities, the one that will be carried out on board the three-masted schooner ‘Le Marité’ stands out, which will travel around 18 European cities and where visitors will be able to see an exhibition of photographs, showing pictures of the different products grown in these regions.

Likewise, they will take part in food trade fairs in the six countries included in the campaign that will be complemented with actions in the Media and through both Facebook and the website www.exotictasteofeurope.eu.

Another of the goals is for others, as with the banana sector, such as the tomato or the papaya sectors to start promoting their production using this logo, which is a clear demonstration of the added value that non-continental Europe can provide in food safety and quality.

La superverdura pisa el acelerador En 2016 los españoles degustaron una media de 1,5 kg de brócoli por persona

a VIII Asamblea General anual de la Asociación +Brócoli ha confirmado lo que el sector venía intuyendo desde hace tiempo: el brócoli está de moda y tiene un gran futuro por delante.

En el último año se registró un incremento de consumo de 300 gramos per cápita

Así lo corroboran las cifras que se dieron durante la jornada, celebrada el 2 de junio en Lorca, con un crecimiento generalizado del consumo, que a nivel nacional se situó en torno al 20% en 2016. En concreto, los españoles ingirieron 66.000 toneladas de esta superverdura, mientras que en el año anterior fueron 55.000. Esto viene a significar que se ha pisado el acelerador en lo que se refiere a consumo, con 300 gramos más por persona y año, a diferencia de ejercicios anteriores en los que la variación interanual venía siendo de 100 gramos.

nuevos socios con los que plantear estrategias. Y es que, si nos unimos e incrementamos las ventas, el sector será más fuerte.

Por cada kilo/per cápita que aumenta el consumo se necesitan entre 3.000 y 4.000 hectáreas de producción”.

En relación a la presente campaña, Cervera dijo que ha sido “más que correcta”, con precios “interesantes” pese a las dificultades que ha habido por la falta de agua. No en vano, “somos y seremos siempre los principales productores de brócoli en la campaña de invierno”.

Mulet, profesor titular de biotecnología en la UPV, que defendió el uso de transgénicos en la alimentación y aseguró que gracias a esta tecnología “podríamos tener brócoli con alta base genética y una mayor resistencia a plagas y sequía”.

La última parte de la jornada corrió a cargo del Mago More, con una conferencia titulada “El poder positivo del cambio”, y una comida para socios donde el brócoli fue el protagonista.

Nunca mejor dicho, éste es un perfil de altos vuelos. A bordo de un Piper Archer y a unos 3.000 pies de altitud transcurrió una buena parte de la entrevista. 58 minutos sobrevolando las comarcas de Lleida que acabaron con la impresionante panorámica que ofrece la confluencia de los ríos Segre y Cinca.

Previo a nuestro vuelo, Joan realiza un minucioso chequeo exterior de cada parte del avión y revisa el combustible en ambas alas.

Hace más de 30 años que Joan Serentill (Benavent de Segriá, 1960) tiene licencia de piloto, y el volar, junto con el golf y el esquí, son sus hobbies preferidos.

Joan, acudió a nuestra cita impecablemente vestido, como un galán que a mí me recordaba a los aviadores de las películas de entreguerras. Desde el principio, me resultó una persona explicativa, afable y pronto tuve la sensación de que me iba a poner las cosas fáciles.

Tras obtener las oportunas acreditaciones, nos adentramos en el aeródromo de Lleida-Alguaire. Después de minutos de espera en la sala de controladores viendo mapas y cartas de navegación, finalmente nos dirigimos al hangar.

Perdone, ¿por qué mantiene tanto interés en el combustible?

Todo está previsto, pero los procedimientos previos son algo sagrado para los pilotos. Y así debe ser. ¿Sabe que la mayor parte de los accidentes se producen por falta de combustible?

Ya dentro de la cabina, Serentill hace sus anotaciones en el cuaderno de vuelo, chequea todo el instrumental de pantalla y pone a prueba los circuitos del avión. Finalmente, oigo el alfabeto radiotelefónico.

Echo, Charlie, Echo, Romeo, Charlie. Listo para despegar.

Perdone, pero es la primera vez que vuelo en un avión de este tipo y me impresiona un poco ¿Es cierto que existen las autopistas del aire?

Por supuesto, y en Europa central hay una zona de gran concentración de ellas, pero los aviones vuelan a distintos niveles. En este caso, no se preocupe que no colisionaremos.

Si no le he entendido mal, usted se dedicó durante más de una década a la competición, a los rallies aéreos. ¿En qué consisten?

Básicamente guardan mucha similitud con los de tierra. En ellos se combinan tanto la precisión en el aterrizaje como en la navegación, es decir el cronómetro y la orientación. La velocidad la marca el piloto, de tal manera que cada segundo que pase por encima o por debajo de lo establecido, penaliza un punto. ¿En qué nivel estuvo?

Llegamos a ganar un Campeonato de España y tuvimos la oportunidad de ir a los Campeonatos del Mundo, pero yo tuve que declinar esa opción porque era en verano, la época del año que más trabajo teníamos en la explotación familiar.

Y algo también muy apasionante es el motovelero: despegas con la ayuda del motor pero luego paras y planeas ayudado por las corrientes. Es un auténtico desafío a la naturaleza y a la gravedad. Tuvimos un

aparato de este tipo durante siete años. ¿Cuándo le surgió el gusanillo de volar?

Llegamos a ganar un Campeonato de España y tuvimos la opción de ir a los Campeonatos del Mundo, pero yo tuve que declinar porque era en verano.

Lo tuve desde muy pequeño. Mi padre hizo el servicio militar en la aviación de Reus.

Yo siempre me lo imaginaba como un gran piloto, aunque era un sencillo cabo. Cuando jugábamos en la calle, que era lo habitual en mi época, yo no quería ser cowboy ni indio, sino general de aviación. Mi madre me contaba que me compró un jersey con un dibujo de unas alas y no quería quitármelo nunca.

mujer tiene tan interiorizado el volar que, en una época en la que volábamos muchísimo, íbamos en coche en silencio por una nacional de línea continua y, de repente, me dice: ¿Joan, por qué no despegas?

Usted utiliza el avión como yo el coche. ¿No?

Efectivamente, la respuesta es piloto. Pero lo cierto es que, con los pies en la tierra, me siento payés.

Bueno no tanto, pero alguna ventaja tiene el ser piloto. Lo utilizo como herramienta de trabajo porque me gusta y evito el tráfico. Sobrevuelo las fincas y he ido a muchas reuniones de Pink Lady pilotando.

Recogía a mis colegas de Giropoma y llegábamos a Francia. Por supuesto, también nos hemos ido de vacaciones toda la familia a Mallorca, Ibiza. Mi hijo jugaba dentro del avión como juegan los niños dentro de un coche. ¡Qué suerte tienen algunos! Cuénteme alguna anécdota.

Supongo que resulta absurdo que le pregunte, que si no fuera lo que es ¿qué profesión hubiera elegido?

Me he enterado que es usted el gerente interino de Fruilar.

Je, je, sí, soy interino y he perdido la cuenta de tantos años de provisionalidad. Un buen día el consejo de administración me dijo preocúpate de esto y aquí estoy.

La realidad es que todas las tareas del management a través de la producción me resultan fascinantes, pero en un mundo tan cambiante creo que la formación continuada es un elemento muy necesario. ¡En una faena tan fantástica como ésta, sólo nos faltaría ganar dinero!

Y usted se sigue formando.

Lo intento. Hace poco hice un postgrado de Gestión Estratégica de la Empresa agroalimentaria, que entre otras cosas, me permitió poner nombre a actividades que ya realizábamos en Fruilar.

Y, hace dos años estuve en Manchester realizando un ‘home stay’ para mejorar mi inglés. ¿Procede usted de la ‘payesía catalana’?

Sí, absolutamente. Mi familia siempre estuvo ligada al campo y fue una de las primeras de la zona que se inició en el negocio frutícola.

Aunque es cierto que mis padres tuvieron una vena muy emprendedora para los negocios.

Mis abuelos poseían una pequeña tienda de comestibles, que más tarde mi madre amplió con otras secciones: ropa, perfumería, etc. y en la que se vendía un poco de todo. Mi padre, hacía doble jornada. Se levantaba muy temprano, iba a las fincas y cuando llegaban los trabajadores les indicaba lo que debían de hacer y cambiaba de oficio porque se iba a la ciudad. Allí se dedicó al tema inmobiliario, en una época de mucha expansión. El patrimonio urbano de la familia procede de esa época.

A bird’s eye perspective

Never has it been more appropriate to say that this is a profile of a high flyer. A large part of the interview took place on board a Piper Archery at an altitude of around 3,000 feet. 58 minutes flying over the districts of Lerida ending with the impressive panoramic view offered by the convergence of the Segre and Cinca Rivers.

Joan came to our appointment impeccably dressed, like 1950’s charmer who reminded me of the pilots from the inter-war films. From the very beginning, he was chatty, friendly and I soon had the feeling that he was going to make things easy for me.

Having obtained the appropriate clearances, we went into the Lerida-Alguaire aerodrome. After a few minutes wait in the air controllers’ room looking at maps and navigational charts, we finally moved on to the hangar.

Before our flight, Joan carried out a meticulous exterior examination of each part of the aeroplane and he checked the fuel in each wing.

Joan Serentill (Benavent de Segriá, 1960) has had his pilot’s licence for over 30 years and flying, along with golf and skiing are his favourite hobbies.

Everything has been planned for, but the pre-flight checks are sacred for pilots. And that is as it should be. Did you know that most accidents occur due to lack of fuel?

Inside the cabin, Serentill makes his notes in the flight log; he checks the screen instruments and tries out the plane’s circuits. Finally, I hear the radio telephone alphabet.

We won a Championship of Spain and we had the option to go to the World Championships, but I had to decline because it was in the summer, the time of year when we work hardest on the family farm.

And motorised gliding is also thrilling: you take off with the help of the engine, but then you stop it and glide, helped along by the air currents. It is a real challenge against nature and gravity. We had one of these planes for seven years.

When did you get bitten by the flying bug?

I have found out that you are the interim manager of Fruilar.

I try to. A short while ago I did a post grad in Agrifood Business Management, which, amongst other things, allowed me to give a name to the activities I was already carrying out in Fruilar. And two years’ ago I was in Manchester, carrying out a “home stay” to improve my English.

Of course, and in Central Europe there is an area with an important concentration of them, but the planes fly at different levels. In this case, don’t worry; we are not going to collide.

What level did you reach?

Indeed, the answer is a pilot. But the truth is that, with my feet on the ground, I feel like a farmer.

And you continue training.

Excuse me, but this is the first time I have flown in a plane of this type and I’m a little overawed. Is it true that there are air motorways?

Basically, they are very similar to rallies on the ground. They combine both accuracy in landing and navigation skills, that is to say, chronometer and orientation. The pilot decides on the speed, in such a way that for each second that you are above or below the established time, you are given a penalty point.

I suppose it is absurd to ask you what profession you would have chosen if you had not become what you are?

Ha ha, yes, I am a temporary employee and I have lost count of how long I have been temporary.

One day the Board of Directors told me to take care of this and here I am. The truth is that I find all the management tasks regarding production fascinating, but in an ever-changing world, I think that continuous training is a very necessary element. In a job as fantastic as this one, the only thing missing is earning some money!

Excuse me, why are you so interested in the fuel?

If I have understood you correctly, you spent over a decade in competitions, in aerial rallies. What do they involve?

There are many, but I’ll tell you this one. My wife was so used to flying at a time when we flew a great deal and we were driving along in the car in silence, along a national freeway with a continuous line and suddenly she said: “Joan, why don’t you take off?

When I was very small. My father did his military service in the aviation corps in Reus. I always imagined him as a great pilot, although he was just a corporal. When we played in the street, which was normal in my youth, I didn’t want to be a cowboy or an Indian, but rather an air force general. My mother told me that she bought me a jersey with some wings on it and I never wanted to take it off.

You use a plane in the same way as I use a car, don’t you?

Well, not as much, but there are some advantages to being a pilot. I use it as a work tool because I like it and I avoid the traffic. I fly over the farms and I have gone to many Pink Lady meetings by plane.

I collected my colleagues from Giropoma and we went to France. Of course, we also have gone on holiday to Mallorca, Ibiza with the whole family. My son played in the plane just as children play in a car.

Some people have all the luck! Tell me a story about it.

Do you come from ‘Catalonian farming stock’?

Yes, totally. My family has always been tied to the land and it was one of the first in the region to start up in the fruit growing business. Although it is true that my parents were true entrepreneurs with a head for business. My grandparents had a small grocery store, which later on my mother extended with other sections: clothing, perfumery, etc. and where a little of everything was sold. My father worked a double shift. He got up very early and went to the farms and when the workers arrived he told them what they had to do and then he changed his profession in the city. There, he was engaged in real estate, during a time of great expansion. The family’s real estate in the city dates from this time.
