Welcome to the Freewill Shakespeare Festival’s 28th season! This year we are pleased to present Love’s Labour’s Lost and Romeo and Juliet . The two plays are an interesting pairing, as both were written around 1594. Shakespeare had no obvious source for the plot of Love’s Labour’s Lost , but Romeo and Juliet was probably inspired by The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet, written by Arthur Brooke in 1562. Both plays feature characters masquerading in disguise, and leading men infatuated with women called Rosaline! Both plots allow for an abrupt change from comedy to tragedy, imparting a profound message that life is a precious commodity that can be cut short in an instant.

We are delighted to welcome back many of our seasoned veterans, and introduce some bright new talents to our Festival. Marissa Kochanski joins us as set designer, and Megan Koshka as costume designer. Cayley Thomas returns to the acting company this year, having been a member of our Young Company in 2012. Stage manager Kerry Johnson joins us again after an eight year hiatus.

We’d like to welcome Louise Lambert and Hunter Cardinal to the acting team, new Young Company members Bill Brown and Neil Kuefler, and many other exciting emerging artist interns who are working with us this summer. It is my privilege to

introduce Julie Haddow, our stellar new Managing Director! Veteran or newbie, this incredible company of theatre professionals will strive to give you the best “Shakespearience” money can buy, no matter what you can afford.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our Board and Associates for their endless support and encouragement, and the Players de Novo for their generosity and commitment to The Freewill Shakespeare Festival this year. 2016 Freewill Special Events Puppet Shows

Worried that your kids won’t understand the plot? First time to Freewill and a little anxious about Shakespeare?

Let Thou Art Here Theatre introduce you to the play through a fun puppet adaptation. This 15-minute primer will introduce you to the characters, outline the plot points and get the whole family excited about the upcoming show! Free for all our guests to the show!

Puppet Shows will run prior to Saturday and Sunday matinees and twice on Pay What You Will nights.

Join us for two Shakesbeer Cask Nights in 2016! Alley Kat Brewery has created a brew so special, William himself would go for seconds! This is a traditional and tasty event that you don’t want to miss! Tapping of the cask begins at 6:40pm.

Tickets are only $35 (plus service fees) and include a free beer from the cask and seating in a reserved section in the amphitheatre.

An Old Fashioned High Tea July 10

All you lovers of old-world loveliness and a dash of makebelieve! Join the Free Will Players and Regency Encounters for an afternoon of live, outdoor theatre, English tea, and other entertainment

in the Freewill special events tent. High Tea guests will receive priority seating for the matinee performance of LLL, refreshments in the tent during intermission and high tea with entertainment in the tent following the show including traditional English folk songs performed live by Tim Chesterton.

Dress code is old-fashioned garden party, Shakespearean or Regency.

Gates open at 1 pm. Matinee performance begins at 2pm. High Tea will start at approximately 4:15pm. Tickets to the High Tea are $40.

Attendees will have the option to stay for the evening performance (8pm) of R&J at a special, reduced price of $20.

SYNOPSIS

Ferdinand, the King of Navarre, decides that his court will be devoted to monkish study for three years— and in order to keep distractions to a minimum, decrees no women will be allowed within a mile of the court.

His buddies Berowne, Longaville, and Dumaine agree to abstain from women, although Berowne expresses reservations about the plan’s chance of success. He also points out that Ferdinand has forgotten an official visit that very day with the Princess of France. As they set out to meet the princess, a fool, Costard, is sent to Don Armado – a visitng Spaniard – to receive punishment for breaking the king’s commands by dallying with a local country wench, Jacquenetta.

The Princess and her female entourage of Rosaline, Maria and Katherine, arrive and are put off when Ferdinand and his lords deny them entrance into court. In protest, they camp out in front of the court. Her aide Boyet makes note of the king’s “affection” toward the Princess, and the ladies retreat to their tents to plan how they can get back at Ferdinand and his men, who have all fallen head over heels with all the ladies.

Meanwhile, Don Armado– infatuated as well with Jacquenetta–and in concert with his young page Moth, promises to ‘pardon’ Costard if Costard delivers a love letter to the wench. Before Costard can do so, however, Berowne finds him and asks him to take a letter of his to Rosaline.

A comedy of errors ensues as Costard

manages to deliver Jacquenetta’s letter to the Princess of France and Rosaline’s letter to Jacquenetta.

King Ferdinand and his men all retreat to a private spot, thinking they are alone. But all overhear one another professing their love for their respective ladies. They realize that their oaths are useless and futile while the women are around. So the lords pay a visit to the ladies in disguise as Russian sailors; however, the ladies turn the tables on them by being in disguise themselves.

The men then return undisguised, but the women continue to bait them, delighting in the men’s confusion.

Just when they begin to navigate these romantic waters, their love play is sidelined as the locals put on a pageant for their entertainment.

The festivities are interrupted when a messenger arrives to inform the Princess that her father has died, and she must leave immediately.

The Princess tells Ferdinand that if he spends one year’s time cloistered in a remote hermitage–his penance for being an oath-breaker–while she is in mourning, then she will consider his suit of marriage. Each lady-in-waiting exacts a similar promise from the king’s lords. Although there will be no weddings forthcoming, the ladies vow to return to Navarre the following year to determine if their love is true.

SYNOPSIS

In Verona, a fight breaks out between young men from the Capulet and Montague families.

Verona’s peace keeper Escalus stops the brawl and warns both clans that if they fight in the streets again, their punishment will be death.

The County Paris asks Capulet for his daughter Juliet’s hand in marriage.

Capulet agrees to introduce them at a masked ball he has planned that evening. While delivering party invitations, Capulet’s servant tells Romeo and his cousin Benvolio about the ball. Hearing that his beloved Rosaline will be there, Romeo agrees to go with Benvolio and his closest friend, Mercutio.

At the ball, Romeo sees Juliet, and they fall in love at first sight. Juliet’s cousin Tybalt recognizes Romeo as a Montague, prompting Benvolio and Mercutio to flee just as Romeo and Juliet discover each other’s identity.

Romeo lingers and discovers Juliet alone on her balcony. They exchange vows of love, and with the help of Juliet’s nurse, they meet the next day at Friar Lawrence’s cell, and are married secretly.

Searching for Romeo, Tybalt meets Mercutio and Benvolio and quarrels with them. Romeo arrives and intervenes, and Tybalt accidently kills Mercutio. Enraged, Romeo kills Tybalt, and Benvolio urges Romeo to flee.

Escalus arrives, and banishes Romeo from Verona.

As Juliet waits for her new husband, the Nurse arrives to tell her what Romeo has done. The Nurse visits Friar Lawrence and discovers Romeo hiding there. The two adults arrange for Romeo to spend the night with Juliet before he takes refuge in Mantua.

To calm the family’s grief over Tybalt’s death, Capulet moves the wedding between Paris and Juliet forward.

When Juliet refuses to comply, Capulet threatens to disown her. Feeling betrayed by her parents and the Nurse, Juliet begs Friar Lawrence to help her.

He provides her with a sleeping potion that will convince everyone she is dead.

Then Romeo will return and wake her, and they can escape from Verona together.

When morning arrives, Juliet is found “dead”. Friar Lawrence comforts the grieving family, and sends Friar John with a message for Romeo, instructing him to come to the Capulet family monument to rescue Juliet, but Friar John is unable to deliver it. Romeo hears instead from a friend that Juliet has died. Distraught, he buys poison from an apothecary, returns to Verona, finds Juliet in the tomb, drinks it, and dies just as she wakes. Friar Lawrence arrives, and discovering Romeo dead, implores Juliet to leave with him. She refuses, and kills herself just as the Friar returns with Escalus, the Capulets and the Montagues. The deaths of their children lead the warring families to bury their grievances and strive for peace.

Marianne Copithorne, Director Romeo and Juliet Marianne is pleased to be directing Romeo and Juliet for her first time at the Festival this summer! Freewill directing credits include As You Like It, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, Titus Andronicus, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Hamlet, and The Merchant of Venice. Other directing credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Players de Novo); By the Bog of Cats, The Crucible, and The Seagull (Grant MacEwan), Blithe Spirit (Vertigo Theatre); Communion, The Woman in Black, Palace of the End, Choke, Habitat and Perfect Pie (Theatre Network); Dial M for Murder, and Little Shop of Horrors (Mayfield Dinner Theatre); Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet, and The Double Inconstancy (Studio Theatre, Timms). Jim Guedo, Director and Sound Designer Love’s Labour’s Lost Jim work as director and designer has been showcased across the country at Canadian Stage, National Arts Centre, The Neptune Theatre, MTC, PTE, STC, The Globe, ATP, Persephone Theatre, The Citadel and Phoenix Theatre. Recent directing credits: Will Eno’s The Realistic Joneses, FreeWill’s Coriolanus and King Lear, Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play for Wild Side Productions, Back To The Eighties: A Most Excellent Adventure and Folkswaggin for the Mayfield, and Venus in Fur. He’s won six Sterlings for Direction and two Saskatoon S.A.T.A.s for Dying City and Shining City. He was nominated for the Siminovitch Prize in Theatre and a Dora Award for Oleanna. As designer, Jim won the S.A.T.A. Award for Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me and a Sterling Award for his set design for M. Butterfly. Upcoming projects include Anne Washburn’s 10 Out Of 12 this upcoming season in the Theatre Network Roxy Performance Series.

Actors Hunter Cardinal, Dumaine / Romeo Edmonton-based, comes from a family tradition of Indigenous activism and politics. He is a graduate of the University of Alberta’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Acting program in the class of 2015. Hunter has also been improvising with Rapid Fire Theatre since 2011. Through theatre, Hunter critically engages with Indigenous and contemporary Canadian culture. He was last seen in the musical Evangeline, a coproduction between the Citadel and the Confederation Centre for the Arts in 2015. This year, Hunter will be joining Soulpepper Theatre in their 2016-18 Academy.

Cayley Thomas, Katherine / Juliet For years Cayley has been influenced by artists in the Edmonton community who have encouraged and inspired her creative pursuits. A graduate of the BFA Acting Program at the University of Alberta, her credits include: The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Saint Joan, The Missionary Position and The Memorandum (Studio Theatre); Peter Pan and The Sound Of Music (The Citadel Theatre) as well as The Tempest and Julius Caesar (The Freewill Shakespeare Festival). These days Cayley works as both an actor as a musician. In 2015, she toured Western Canada and played dates in Iceland as part of a cultural exchange between The Reykjavik Tourism Board and Alberta Music. In April she released her first full length LP ‘Weird Love’ and there are copies available up at the merch tent. Have a fantastic evening!

John Wright, Nathaniel / Friar Lawrence A 45-year veteran of the Canadian stage, now semi-retired: John has appeared across the country from Halifax’s Neptune Theatre to the Vancouver Playhouse. He is delighted to be back with Free Will, after a year’s hiatus, a company he holds with great fondness, and has appeared in productions since 1995.

Favourite roles include Lear in King Lear, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Titus in Titus Andronicus, Prospero in The Tempest and Malvolio in Twelfth Night. Recent credits include Lighting Design for Gordon (Theatre Network), Light The Bridge Project (City of Edmonton), Silver Skate Festival, As You Like It and Coriolanus (Freewill Players), Mote (Blarney Productions), Set and Lighting Design for Burning Bluebeard and Fatboy (Edmonton Actor’s Theatre). Scott is the resident Production Manager and Lighting Designer for Theatre Network, NextFest, and The Interstellar Rodeo. Scott is also a founding member of the Edmonton band Captain Tractor.

Matthew Skopyk, Head of Sound / Sound Designer & Composer for Romeo & Juliet Matthew Skopyk is an Edmonton-based Sound Designer and Composer. Recent Design/Composition credits include: Or The Whale (Wishbone Theatre), Vigilante (Catalyst Theatre), Playing With Fire (Citadel Theatre/ Persephone Theatre/ Alberta Theatre Projects), ENRON (National Arts Centre), Whisper (Studio Theatre/ Catalyst Theatre). Matthew also currently resides as the Sound Supervisor for the Department of Drama at the University of Alberta.

Tiana Tolley, Production Manager This year marks Tiana’s 10th summer with the Freewill Shakespeare Festival! Her highlights include splattering mud all over the wall in King Lear, siphoning fountain water out of the fountain in Much Ado About Nothing and searching for forks and pie-bits in the rubber pit in Titus Andronicus. Well-known for her carpentry skills, Tiana is also known throughout the community for her organizational abilities and her rather unique sense of humour. She was nominated in 2014 for an Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for “Excellence in Production” for her work as a Technical Director/ Production Manager.
