MESSAGE TO OUR AUDIENCE Freewill Shakespeare Festival 2015 Dear Friends, Welcome back to the Park for our 27th season! After having to move indoors last summer, we are extremely excited to be able to return to our home and continue our regular programming under the stellar new canopy at the Hawrelak Park Heritage Amphitheatre!

We are thrilled to be working with so many new faces this year. Megan Koshka joins us as set designer, Scott Peters as lighting designer, and Hannah Matiachuk as costume designer. We’d like to welcome some new actors to the team this year, including Andrew MacDonald Smith, Farren Timoteo, and Nancy McAlear. Ryan Parker and Ashley Wright return to us after a considerable hiatus, and our new Young Company members are Morgan, Nicholas, Nyssa, Brittney, Kelsi and Allison. We’d also like to welcome Julie Haddow, our Development Manager, and Paula Blanco Longa, our Administrative Assistant, as well as numerous young emerging artists and professionals who joined our team of amazing interns.

This summer’s productions are As You Like It, directed by yours truly, and Coriolanus, directed by Jim Guedo.

Both plays share ‘banishment’ as a common theme, although those in As You Like It are betrayed by family

members and are banished from court, while Coriolanus abandons his family and banishes himself from Rome. We are pleased to be able to present Coriolanus for the first time ever at the Freewill Shakespeare Festival!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Board of Directors and Associates for their energy, support and encouragement, as well as our amazing Managing Director Cadence Konopaki for her incomparable administrative savvy. Whether immersed in the tragedy of Coriolanus or entertained by the wit and wisdom of As You Like It, audiences of all ages will be inspired by what has become one of Edmonton’s most popular festivals.

I thank the Free Will Players and all those onstage and behind the scenes who have dedicated their energy, creativity and support to this year’s festival. It is a spectacular display of the talented people who live in Edmonton, and an example of the adage “what is a city but the people?”

PATRON PROFILE JEANIE AND JESSE HAVE BEEN LONG TIME PATRONS, DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS AT OUR FESTIVAL. GET TO KNOW THEM A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND FIND OUT WHY WE’LL GET A SHOUT OUT AT THEIR WEDDING! How did you guys meet?

Jesse: I met Jeanie at the start of my first shift as a Freewill volunteer. Before I’d even entered the front gate, we’d made plans to see one of the shows. It’s been two truly wonderful years since, and we’ll be married by the time this is published.

I’m still surprised by and thankful for that one serendipitous encounter. I will always be happy knowing our story started at Edmonton’s Freewill festival.

Why do you volunteer with Freewill?

Jeanie: Honestly, my first year I signed up just to test it out - and quickly found out how much fun it is to hang out in the park with such a great group of people (both volunteers and patrons).

Jesse: My first time at least, I thought it was an excellent chance to spend time outdoors in the summer, to get involved in Edmonton’s festival scene, and to support a pretty worthwhile cause.

What-You-Will nights. I know that that’s not a given in all festivals, and it’s something that I think is totally worth supporting—everyone who wants to should have a chance to come see these shows.

What’s your favorite Freewill memory?

Jeanie: It’s from sometime in high school, and involves a group of about eight friends, all digging into a Safeway cake straight out of the box at the intermission of a Freewill show. You couldn’t get away with that level of awesome at most theatres.

What do you wish other people knew about Freewill?

Jesse: I suppose most people would be relieved to know that the Free Will players and production staff take great fun in their shows.

Performances are fresh, funny, spontaneous, and accessible to an audience that may not typically enjoy Shakespeare otherwise.

Why do you donate to Freewill?

Jeanie: For a couple of reasons - partially because I owe the festival a big favour on the love-of-my-life front, and partially because I really love that the festival is committed to staying accessible through things like Pay-

QUESTION & ANSWER WITH FREE WILL PLAYERS What was your worst mosquito moment?

As an Assistant Stage Manager often we need to hide backstage or onstage and stay as still as possible to not pull attention until a scene change or costume change comes up and sometimes that gets especially hard with mosquitoes trying to dine on you.

– Candice (Stage Manager) What was the best thing that Mother Nature has added to one of Free Will’s shows that you’ve been a part of?

In King Lear, the actor (John Kirkpatrick) playing Cornwall said his line “Let us withdraw; ‘twill be a storm.” This was immediately followed by thunder that seemed to roll around the perimeter of the Amphitheatre in the exact direction that the actors were directed to look out over the horizon.

In Twelfth Night, the actor (John Ullyatt) playing Orsino had a squirrel jump up onstage and let

loose with a huge chatter right before he had the line “This savors not much of distraction.” which, of course, John said right to the audience while pointing at the squirrel.

– Troy (Actor/Artistic Associate) How does working in an outdoor festival affect your process?

You’ve got to be prepared for anything. Free Will is the only place that I work that I have to take a whole bin of extra clothes and food.

– Candice (Stage Manager) What is the most challenging aspect of lighting design in an outdoor venue? How to you deal with that challenge?

It’s hard to set levels with lights because when we are in tech, it’s getting pretty close to summer solstice—the longest days of the year—and it doesn’t really get dark until 11 PM. So the lighting designer has to stay up pretty

late to do his/her job, and as the director, I don’t often actually see what’s up there until dress rehearsals. The lights really kick in during Act Two, though, and great magic can be created down in the Park with lighting.

– Marianne (Artistic Director) What’s it like to pull off a show in a crazy thunderstorm?

It’s seriously so much fun! I absolutely love the adrenaline you get while trying to run the show while simultaneously thinking about the emergency protocols in place! You might be helping an actor backstage with a quick change while keeping your eye on the black cloud steadily moving over the Amphitheatre, or preparing to hand off a prop while keeping your other eye on the emergency exit nearest to you.

– Tiana (Production Manager)

SYNOPSIS

Duke Senior has been banished from the court by his brother, Duke Frederick. He and a group of faithful friends take refuge in the Forest of Arden. His daughter Rosalind stays uneasily at court to be with her best friend and cousin, Celia (Duke Frederick’s daughter).

Oliver, the oldest son of the late Sir Rowland de Boys, has enslaved his youngest brother Orlando. Orlando can no longer endure living in poverty, and decides to wrestle for his fortune at Frederick’s court. He meets Rosalind there, and they fall in love.

Anxious that Rosalind will pose a threat to his new regime, Frederick also banishes his niece. Celia and the court fool Touchstone accompany Rosalind to the Forest of Arden to find Duke Senior. Rosalind disguises herself as a young man named Ganymede, and Celia disguises herself as his sister Aliena.

Learning that Oliver is planning to kill him, Orlando also escapes to Arden and is given refuge by Duke Senior. He

posts love letters to Rosalind all over the forest, and meets her, disguised as Ganymede. Doubting that Orlando is as heart-sick over her as he claims, she challenges him to prove his sincerity by wooing her (Ganymede) as if she (he) were Rosalind.

Elsewhere in the Forest, a young shepherd named Silvius suffers because Phebe will not return his love. Phebe has fallen for Ganymede, and Touchstone is attracted to a shepherdess named Audrey.

The melancholy Jaques, Duke Senior’s faithful lord, is delighted by Touchstone, but jaded by all this ‘love’ business.

Oliver goes to the Forest to hunt down Orlando, and is attacked by a lion. Orlando saves his life, and Oliver asks his brother to forgive his past behaviour. He falls in love with Aliena (Celia) and proposes to her.

Happy for his brother, but tortured by the love he feels for Rosalind, Orlando no longer has the heart to woo Ganymede. Rosalind, as Ganymede, promises to deliver the ‘real’ Rosalind to Orlando, and arrange for all the lovers to be happily wed. She keeps her promise, and the second son of Sir Rowland de Boys arrives with news that Duke Frederick has had a change of heart. He gives Duke Senior back his title and restores his fortune. All who were exiled are now free to return to court. Jaques stays behind to pursue a solitary and contemplative life.

SYNOPSIS

Rome is at the breaking point: food shortages fan the flames of citywide rebellion while Volscan rebel guerillas threaten from outside. Senator Menenius tries to calm a mutiny among the Roman citizens, angry over the way they have been oppressed by the elite. But his friend, the decorated war hero Caius Martius treats them with contempt, and the citizens disperse.

Martius’ attitude arouses the scorn of the tribunes Sicinius and Brutus who plot his downfall.

News arrives that the rebel forces under Aufidius inch towards Rome.

Martius’ mother Volumnia and wife Virgilia discuss Martius’ earlier feats, and are visited by Valeria, who reports Martius’ impeding assault of the rebel stronghold of Corioles. The generals Cominius and Titus Lartius attack but Martius plays a major role in the assault, after which Corioles is captured. For his part in the battle, Martius is given the honorary title of Coriolanus.

Coriolanus returns to Rome, where pressed by family and supporters, finds himself nominated for a consulship. But for the nomination to be valid, he needs to present himself humbly to the people and obtain their votes, a task which he carries out grudgingly. The people do

give him their votes, but Brutus and Sicinius work the crowd, sway them and change their ‘votes’. When this is reported to Coriolanus, he cannot contain his anger; lashing out against the people, he is accused of being a traitor. A violent confrontation prompts him to leave. Yet pressured by his mother, he returns to the people, trying to play the game of politics. But unable to control himself at the mob’s taunts, Coriolanus banishes himself, severing his connection with Rome and vowing revenge.

The Volscan rebels meanwhile have regained strength and move on Rome. Coriolanus offer his services to Aufidius, and he is made welcome.

When the news of this alliance reaches Rome, there is panic, and the people begin to regret what they have done.

Meanwhile, the popularity of Coriolanus grows among the Volscans, much to Aufidius’ dismay.

Rome sends envoys to ask Coriolanus to spare Rome. He rejects the approaches of Cominius and Menenius, but finally yields to his mother. Upon hearing of this betrayal, Aufidius meets with a group of conspirators, and when Coriolanus returns he is once again called a traitor, and killed.

Nyssa Beairsto, Apprentice Stage Manager, As You Like It & Coriolanus Nyssa Beairsto is delighted to aid in the creation of this year’s Freewill Shakespeare Festival. She is currently in her third year of the U of A stage management program. Some of her previous productions include stagemanaging: Frost Flowers/Arctic Death Machine (University of Alberta), Betrayal (University of Alberta) Enid and the Deathwish for Fringe Festival (Moplip Theatre), Never, Never for Found Festival (Promise Productions), Speed the Plow (University of Alberta) and Solitaire (New Works Festival 2014). Nyssa is very proud of the work that has been achieved with such an incredible cast and crew, they have made this summer extraordinary.

Robert Benz, Duke Frederick & Hymen / Menenius This is Robert’s second season with Freewill, having played Baptista last season. He spent six summers in another riverside tent with Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan (Saskatoon), where his roles included Claudius (Hamlet), Falstaff (Merry Wives), Bottom (Midsummer NIght’s Dream), Enobarbus (Antony & Cleopatra), & Prospero (TheTempest). Candice Charney, Stage Manager, Coriolanus

Candice is happy to be celebrating her tenth season with Freewill this summer. Previous shows this season include assistant stage managing A Christmas Carol with the Citadel Theatre and stage managing Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe Off-Broadway with Catalyst Theatre. Candice is a graduate of the BFA Stage Management program at the U of A. Thank you to everybody involved with Freewill for yet another great summer.

Marianne Copithorne, Director Marianne is delighted to be returning to the outdoors to direct As You Like It! Freewill directing credits include The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, Titus Andronicus, As You Like It (2008), Love’s labour’s Lost, Hamlet, and The Merchant of Venice. Other directing credits include The Crucible (Grant MacEwan), Jason Chinn’s adaptation of The Seagull (Grant MacEwan), Blithe Spirit (Vertigo Theatre); Communion, The Woman in Black, Palace of the End, Choke, Habitat and Perfect Pie (Theatre Network); Dial M for Murder, and Little Shop of Horrors (Mayfield Dinner Theatre); and Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet, and The Double Inconstancy (Studio Theatre, Timms). Marianne is a graduate of the BFA Acting and MFA Directing Programs at the University of Alberta. Recently she’s been teaching Theatre Arts students acting at Grant MacEwan University.

Belinda Cornish, Celia / Volumnia Belinda is just delighted to be back in the Park! Previous appearances with the festival include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear, Julius Caesar (Sterling Award), Othello, Much Ado About Nothing and Titus Andronicus. Other recent credits include: The Euphorians, The Exquisite Hour, Witness To A Conga (Teatro La Quindicina); Don’t Dress For Dinner, Shear Madness, Boeing Boeing (Mayfield Theatre); A Christmas Carol (Citadel Theatre); The Deep Blue Sea (Bright Young Things). She is also a writer, and her newest play, Category E, premiered this April with the Maggie Tree Collective. She is a core company member of DieNasty; the Live Improvised Soap Opera, co-host of Teatro la Quindicina’s monthly variety spectacular That’s Terrific! and can be seen in Superchannel’s award-winning sitcom Tiny Plastic Men. She currently spends her spare time being incrementally devoured by a puppy.

Nathan Cuckow, Oliver / Aufidius Nathan is an Edmonton-based actor, producer and writer. Recent credits include: The Ugly One (Kill Your Television); Passion Play (Wild Side Productions); The Taming of the Shrew (Freewill Shakespeare Festival); Flight of the Viscount (Shadow Theatre); The Crackwalker (Kill Your Television); In On It (Theatre Network). Nathan is a Co-Artistic Director of the independent theatre collective, Kill Your Television, and is the proud recipient of several awards, including an Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding New York Theatre. Morgan Donald, Audrey / Aide, Citizen Morgan has been coming to Freewill since she could walk and is beyond thrilled to be a part of this years festival. She is going into her final year at MacEwan University in the Theatre Arts program. Previous theatre credits include The Inspector General and The Escape From Happiness with the Citadel Theatre’s Young Acting Company, The Odyssey, Curtains and White Christmas at Victoria School of the Arts and Oliver! at the Citadel Theatre. Hannah Matiachuk, Festival Costume Designer Hannah is currently an MFA Theatre Design student at the University of Alberta. Her previous professional work is in both fashion and theatre design. Nancy McAlear, Kemble & Phebe / Senator, Citizen Nancy is an Edmonton based performer and director. She holds a BFA in acting and an MFA in directing from the University of Alberta.

In a career spanning 30 years, she has worked across the country in theatre, film, and television. She has been nominated multiple times for Sterling Awards for both acting and directing, and received one for her performance in Frankenstein (Catalyst Theatre). Most recently she directed Category E for The Maggie Tree and The Contract for her own company, MadFandango Theatre Collective. This past season she was seen in Thou Art Here’s The Falstaff Project and A Christmas Carol (Citadel Theatre). Nancy was very honoured this year to be short-listed for the Gina Wilkinson Prize.

Gil Miciak, Stage Manager, As You Like It Gil is very glad to be returning to Freewill for a third season. Some recent credits include stage managing The Genius Code (Surreal SoReal), Aladdin (Alberta Opera), Lobster Alice (Atlas Theatre) and assistant stage managing Nevermore (Catalyst Theatre). Gil was born and raised in Edmonton and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management from the UofA Troy O’Donnell, Adam & Oliver Martext / Chorus An Artistic Associate of the Freewill Shakespeare Festival, Troy has appeared in many of their productions. He has also performed with Thou Art Here Theatre (The Falstaff Project), Punctuate! Nicholas Donald Rose, Amiens & William / Citizen, Roman Soldier, Rebel & Aide Nicholas is thrilled to be joining these incredible players in his first year in the park. Hailing from Vancouver BC, he studied and sang with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and moved on to graduate as an actor from the Vancouver Film School. He is thankful to have been given many opportunities in his hometown, one of which included the portrayal of ‘Oliver’ in the Original Canadian Cast of BUNKED!: A Camp Musical (Awkward Stage Productions). Currently he is a Theatre Arts student at MacEwan University and will enter his final year in the fall. Nicholas sends giant thank yous to his family for their support and to Marianne, Jim and the entire Freewill Company for this chance.

Matthew Skopyk, Sound Designer, ‘As You Like It’ / Head of Sound Matthew Skopyk is an Edmonton-based Sound Designer and Composer. Recent design/composition credits include: Richard III, Titus Andronicus, Much Ado About Nothing, and Macbeth (Freewill); Spreepark the Musical (Mischief and Mayhem); Palace of the End (Theatre Network); Annie Mae’s Movement (Studio Theatre); and Something Red (Vault). A BFA graduate of the U of A Technical Theatre Production program (2006), Matthew excels at software/hardware manipulation, allowing for new realms of possibility in theatre through manipulation of data. His works include wireless performer-worn sensors that allow for performer control over technical aspects of a production, a glove-based three-dimensional-panner for sound designers, and a MIDI cello. Matthew has worked as a Front of House mixer for companies such as Free Will Players and the Catalyst Theatre. Matthew is the current Head of Audio for the Drama Department at the University of Alberta.

Kevin Sutley, Duke Senior / Citizen, Roman Soldier & Rebel Kevin is an Edmonton-based director, actor, and is Co-Artistic Director of Edmonton’s award winning, independent theatre company, Kill Your Television. Directing credits include productions of Monster, subUrbia, Stop Kiss, The Glass Menagerie, Shakespeare’s R&J, Victor and Victoria’s Terrifying Tale of Terrible Things, The Crackwalker and The Ugly One… all with Kill Your Television. For Free Will, Kevin was last seen in Taming of the Shrew as Signor Vincentio.

He also appeared as Julius Caeser in Julius Caeser and Gonzalo in The Tempest. In 2007 he played roles in Richard III and As You Like It. Kevin teaches theatre at the UofA’s Augustana Campus in Camrose.

At Augustana he has directed several productions including; Unity 1918, Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat, Bonjour, Là, Bonjour, Auksenberg: Trial by Fury, The Laramie Project, The Vagina Monologues, Les Belles-Soeurs, The Illusion and Love’s Labour’s Lost.

Farren Timoteo, Silvius & Hugh / Sincinius Farren is thrilled to be making his debut with the Freewill Shakespeare Festival. Previous acting credits include Make Mine Love, and Monty Python’s Spamalot (Citadel Theatre); Marvelous Pilgrims, Scent of Compulsion, Mother of the Year and A Momentary Lapse (Teatro la Quindicina); Little Shop of Horrors, Peace, Love and Rock ‘n Roll, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Mayfield Dinner Theatre); The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Western Canada Theatre); Waiting for Godot (Wishbone Theatre); Early Bloomer (Concrete Theatre); Assassins (Studio Theatre); and The Busy World is Hushed (Northern Light Theatre). Farren is going into his tenth season as Artistic Director of Alberta Opera, and is an Artistic Associate for Teatro la Quindicina. He can next be seen in the Citadel Theatre’s Alice Through the Looking Glass. Farren resides here in Edmonton with celebrated actress, Patricia Zentilli, and their incredible 4 year-old son, Leonardo.

Tiana Tolley, Festival Production Manager As a graduate of Grant MacEwan University’s Theatre Production program, Tiana has spent the past decade in the Edmonton Theatre scene. Her credits include serving as the Resident Technician and Carpenter for Theatre Network since 2006, the past 8 summers with the Freewill Shakespeare Festival and the last 2 seasons as Technical Director for Alberta Opera’s Touring Association. Well-known for her scenic carpentry skills and love of hotdogs, Tiana is also known throughout the community for her organizational abilities and her rather unique sense of humour. She was nominated last season for an Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award for “Excellence in Production” for her work as a Technical Director/ Production Manager. Tiana hearts Dr. Pepper, the Chicken-WaffleClub sandwich at Montana’s, Sexy Joe and making faces with her hilarious 3-year-old! (Seriously though, that sandwich is amazing…)

John Ullyatt, Le Beau / Caius (Coriolanus) John has been with Freewill for many years, starting in 1998.

Favourite roles with Freewill include Richard in Richard III, Launce in Two Gentlemen of Verona, Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Iago in Othello. He can usually be found at the Citadel Theatre, or many of the other theatres in town. He also scrounges up work all across the country from Montreal to Victoria. Most recently, John was in The Best Brothers at the Belfry Theatre, A Christmas Carol and One Man, Two Guvs at The Citadel, and A Steady Rain with Blarney Productions. He is also a founding member of Firefly Theatre, Edmonton’s circus theatre, with whom he co-created and performed in Primordial Blues, Duck Duck Bang and Craniatrium.
