The Jug and Barrel in Stanningley held a family day and raised £1,027.57 for SILT. Local man Bob Birdsall for his tireless fund raising for Meningitis, a fun evening was held at Farsley Working Men’s Club £1701.00 was raised on the evening.

Over some time Bob has helped to raise £1.5 millon.

The Wagon and Horses in Stanningley raised another £200 for Martin House Children’s Hospice bringing their total sum for this charity to £4,517.89.

£150,000 cancer target for Leeds residents

Macmillan Cancer Support has launched an appeal for individuals, community groups, schools and businesses in Leeds to help raise over £100,000 - by drinking coffee and eating cake. They want this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning to be the biggest ever.

The charity is hoping over 1500 coffee mornings will take place across the Leeds area, attracting thousands to attend one and raising over £150,000.

Across the UK Macmillan hopes to raise over £15million from the event to beat last year’s total.

Macmillan’s Fundraising Manager, Hayley Cooke said: “We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us. Last year we raised a record-breaking £112,964 from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in Leeds and we really hope we can 10

beat the total this year. We’re asking people to once again invite their friends, relatives or workmates to come for coffee and help support Macmillan. It’s a fun and easy way to raise money to help Macmillan be there for people with cancer and their families when they need us most.”

The money raised from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is used to fund vital services to include six Macmillan GPs to improve cancer services across the county to prevent people from facing cancer alone and ultimately save lives.

Fundraiser Hayley Cooke added: “Sadly the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is increasing every year and that means Macmillan’s support for people living with cancer is in more demand than ever. Every pound raised by those taking part in events like World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will help us fund our vital local services.”

The official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is on September 27 but events can be held any time.

How Rude!

Know your Table Etiquette

Table manners are usually something we learn from our extended family as we grow up. Sitting around a table and enjoying a family meal, often prompts older members to naturally correct younger members behaviour with polite phrases such as ‘don’t speak with your mouth full, or elbows off the table please’. This way we learn what is considered impolite and polite in society. The reason table manners exist is to ensure that everyone dining is comfortable and can enjoy the experience equally. It also helps the waiters avoid unnecessary disasters, as guest know which shoulder they will be leaning in over to serve their meal or wine.

Next time you are eating out, observe your fellow diners in the restaurant and see just how many have forgotten or choose not to practice simple table manners. Different manners vary around the world, but for us stiff upper lipped Brits here are a few pointers, just in case Grandma isn’t around.

Expertly Seasoned

Your host or chef will have spent years perfecting their dishes and want you to enjoy them exactly as they have prepared them for you.

This includes the seasoning! It is very rude to add salt or pepper or anything to the dish until after you have tasted it. Some people do like their foods saltier than others, so adding something after you have tasted it is acceptable, although not advised in the top restaurants, and unless you have a death wish never ask a French chef for Ketchup.

Posture Perfect

The way that you sit at a table, is of the utmost importance in the quintessentially English establishments, and one of the reasons maitre d’s will help ladies by pushing in their chairs from behind. Elbows must not touch the table, and sitting too far back shows you are disinterested.

In addition, leaning in too far is deemed the equivalent of a pig eating at a trough so a happy medium is what you are after.

The Lean

Leaning across someone’s plate in order to reach something is very rude indeed.

Politely ask someone to pass something down to you. Diners are used to passing things around and this is a good way of creating conversation with other diners.

Patience is a Virtue

Starting to eat before all the people at your table have received their meal or beginning to eat before your host, are the most commonly forgotten manners and considered the rudest of all. Wait until everyone is ready, then only if commanded by your host, eat first.

Once again, BOB BIRDSALL is holding a fund-raising event for Meningitis UK, in memory of his daughter Well Done to Bob and his helpers, an amazing £1,701.00 was raised Rosslyn, who died of the disease. on the evening.

Over the years Bob has helped to raise over £1.5 million to help towards finding a cure for meningitis and hopes to raise even more money this year.

PUDSEY PRIMROSE HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL PERFORM ROMEO & JULIET Don’t miss this great opportunity to see the Year 6 children performing in what could be the performance of their lifetime.

Tickets will be on sale from the box office closer to the time. Prior to the performance the children take part in a cast workshop at the theatre to get used to working on the stage and with the professionals there. This is the second year that Pudsey Primrose Hill have taken part in the Shakespeare School Festival. Every pupil in Year 6 is involved in making the performance a huge success. The children have already started to rehearse and a marketing team has been chosen. The marketing team will be working hard in the coming weeks to sell tickets and create a buzz about the performance. In addition, children from our school will also be planning and helping the technicians on the night with lighting and sound effects.

The script is an abridged version with the play running at 30 minutes long, with the children performing in Shakespearean language.

Taking part in the festival is invaluable in developing the pupils’ confidence, team working skills, speaking and listening and perseverance to reach a truly memorable end goal.

Strawberry Mock-quiri (Serves 2)

Ingredients: 4 LARGE STRAWBERRIES, STALKS REMOVED 8 TABLESPOONS CASTER SUGAR 2 TABLESPOONS FRESH LEMON JUICE 360ML OF CHILLED LEMONADE 6 CUBES ICE Directions: Put the strawberries, sugar, ice and lemon juice into a blender and blend until the ice begins to form a crushed and fine consistency.

Then add the lemonade and blend for a further 10 seconds. Pour into glasses and enjoy!

Mango Mockolada (Serves 2)

Ingredients: 2 LARGE MANGOS 2 LIMES ½ TIN OF CREAM OF COCONUT ½ TIN OF COCONUT MILK 6 LARGE ICE CUBES Directions: Slice two pieces of mango and lime and keep them for decoration. Peel and chop the mango and place in a blender, add the coconut milk and cream of coconut squeeze the limes and pour into the blender. Puree until silky smooth. Add the ice and blend until the ice is really fine. Pour into two glasses and garnish with mango and lime slices, then serve immediately.

How to Dine

Al Fresco

Al fresco dining is simply “eating outdoors”. It adds a lively and enjoyable dimension to dining and gets you out of the house into the fresh, open air, encouraging a good appetite and an appreciation for the slower pace of life.

This article provides a few ideas to help you organise outdoor dining successfully.

ONE:

Find a suitable location to set up an outdoor dining area. Ideal features of an outdoor eating area include:

Decorate simply. A tablecloth, some flowers, a lantern, etc. are the types of items suitable for decorating an outdoor table.

Remember that you will have to cart all these items from the inside to outdoors and vice versa, so minimise this by being smart about your decoration choices. Even grabbing a pot plant from outside and placing it on a clean

Use insect deterrents. Place insect repellent herbs near the dining area (e.g., lavender, tansy, pyrethrum, etc.) and burn citronella candles or oil to keep the insects at bay.

TIPS:

Make the most of the natural setting and rely on it to provide most of the interest for your al fresco dining.

Candles placed in glass lanterns can be a ro-

mantic way to light the area in the evening without having the flames burn out. Many outdoor furniture and house wares stores sell these types of lanterns.

What’s in a

Name?

Have you ever wondered why the phone book has so many Johnson’s, Smith’s or Coopers listed? How much do you know about your surname or family name and where did it originally come from?

Although Clan names and family names were sometimes used amongst the ancient and Roman nations, it is really the Middle Ages that bought us the surname as we know it today. After the Black Death, villages remained remote from each other, and the populations in each area grew. This meant that there was often one or more person with the same name, so in order to differentiate, a description was added. For example, Johnson would indicate the son of John, or Cooper, referring to the man that makes the barrels. Occupation, appearance, family connections and locations were often the basis of the surname, and although the spelling and pronunciation may have changed over the centuries with the arrival of foreign invaders and new languages, many of the original names have managed to live on until today.

Occupation Names In a village environment the easiest way to differentiate between people was by occupation, as most jobs were manual and often there was only one barrel maker (Cooper), arrow maker (Fletcher) or builder / craftsman (Wright) so telling them apart was easy. Other names that follow the occupation pattern are, wood worker (Turner), game keeper (Parker), leather tanner (Barker), bread maker (Baker), fisherman (Fisher), priest or one that can read (Clarke), guard (Ward) or trader (Chapman)

Location Names You can probably guess that Field, Brooke and North fall into this section easily as they simply describe where a person lives or comes from.

Others take their form from the old words used to

describe the areas: Halliwell, lives by the holy spring or well, Shaw, meaning thicket or person from the wood, Murphy which comes from the Gaelic ‘O’Murchadha, which means descendant from the sea. Hall refers to one who worked and lived in the Manor House and Holmes comes from the old English ‘Holm’ which means island or low lying land.

Descriptive Surnames These are a little harder to detect, as some describe the actual physical or personal traits of a person, and also how they conduct them self or what they wear, White or Brown are easy ones and refer to either skin, hair colour or clothing but Bell may be harder to pot.

Bell indicates someone is handsome or attractive, and Fox refers to someone with red hair or a sly nature. Lewis is a descriptive name but comes from Lowis Lodovius which means ‘Renowned, famous in battle’ the same as King or Cox refers to a person deemed as a chieftan or someone that is important in the village.

Family Connections As today, the easiest way to describe someone is to make the family connection, for example Ander’s son would become Anderson, and the kin of John would become Jenkins. Young is an obvious one, as it was used to describe the ‘Young’ or child of a person with the same name. Foster is also exactly what it says, one that fostered someone else’s children, this became very popular during the Black Death when many children were left or phaned.

Goodbye

Tired Eyes leave them on for around 15 – 20 minutes. This is a great quick fix for tired eyes, but if you seem to always have dark circles, then repeating this treatment a couple of times a day for about two weeks really will lighten the area long term.

Asian Treat

Enjoying the sun, staying out late and overindulging can often leave the skin on your face looking a little washed out and tired. A good facial scrub and moisturizer can usually help, but what about your eyes?

Sagging skin, puffiness, fine lines and dark circles are a dead give away and no matter how much make-up you apply, they just look darker and more obvious.

However there is no need to panic just yet as we have managed to find some great natural remedies that will not only soothe your tired eyes, but will also reduce the dark circles and puffiness as well.

H2O

The sure fire way of reducing the appearance of dark circles is diet and hydration. Often toxins are responsible for the dark areas and puffiness, so flushing out the bad and replacing it with good is the answer. Water is a natural body cleanser and re-hydrating your body by drinking 8 glasses of water a day will help.

Tea Time

Next time you make a cup of tea or green tea; don’t throw away the tea bags. Pop them into the fridge to cool instead and then when you are ready, lie back and close your eyes and place the tea bags over your lids and

Take a few spoonfuls of turmeric spice, and mix with a little pineapple juice to form a paste. Apply around the eye area and leave on for about 20 minutes, then remove with cool water and pat dry.

Minty Fresh

Grab a handful of fresh mint from your garden or supermarket, and crush it down so that it forms a paste or mulch like consistency.

Lie back and place the mint around your eye area for around 15 minutes. Be careful not to get the mint into the actual eyes as it will sting. When you have finished, add a little water to the mint and pop it in the fridge for the next time.

Juicy

Take a cucumber and grate it finely into a bowl.

Add a few drops of lemon juice and a couple of spoonfuls of lanolin cream. Gently pat this around the eye area and leave it on for about 15 minutes. Rinse off with cool water and pat dry.

It seems many of you enjoyed our “Strange but True” article which outlined some of the ancient laws and city ordinances that still exist in the UK today. For this issue we decided to look into some other countries weird and wonderful legal systems to see if there is any that are even more bizarre than ours. The first country to spring to mind was, of course our English speaking cousins across the water.

Here are some American laws for you to have a giggle at!

Did you know……?

In California, animals are banned from mating publicly within 1,500 feet of a school, tavern or place of worship.

In Louisiana, it is illegal to rob a bank and then shoot the bank teller with a water pistol.

In Alabama, it is illegal to wear a fake moustache, if it causes laughter in church.

In New York, it is illegal to greet each other by ‘putting one’s thumb to the nose and wiggling the fingers’ In New York it is illegal to hang clothes on a line without a license.

In California, no vehicle without a driver may exceed 60 mph.

In Baltimore, it is illegal to take a lion to the movies.

In New York, during a concert, it is illegal to eat peanuts and walk backwards on the sidewalk.

In Oklahoma, it is illegal to have a sleeping donkey in your bathtub after 7pm.

Even weirder…..

Men may not be seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown.

The penalty from jumping off a building is death.

And the most bizarre……..

In Florida it is still LEGAL to have sexual relations with a porcupine! OUCH!

It seems weird that plants suffer from stress, but they do and during this recent heat wave you may find that one or more of your plants are showing the signs of it.

Watering, feeding and pest control will help keep your plants healthy.

Lack of water is one form of stress that can be easily identified and managed. Wilting is a sure sign of under watering. Plants will often begin to shrivel up and cast off dead leaves. Particularly hot spells can have a shock effect on your plants. Watering your plants regularly and spraying the leaves in the early morning or evenings, out of direct sunlight will benefit your plants health.

Plants also need to be well fed, as pest and diseases will strike a plant that is under stress (much the same as humans) it is important to feed your plants well during hot spells.
