2025 Theme
The theme for this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, #Twenty20Thrive, is a powerful call to action — a celebration of what it means to thrive, not just survive. It’s about embracing every part of your journey, rising through challenges, and living with purpose and passion. Just as succulents thrive in the harshest environments by drawing strength from within, so too can you rise through life’s toughest times with resilience and grace. Whether thriving means taking your first brave step, running your best race, or showing up for others, this theme reminds us that every stride forward matters. At its heart, #Twenty20Thrive is about empowering women, strengthening communities, and creating space for everyone to grow, connect, and shine. It’s about celebrating the victories — big or small — and lifting each other up along the way. Because when women thrive, families flourish, communities grow stronger, and change becomes possible.

Because Moms
Deserve a Day Too!
This year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane is all about thriving in every role you play — and that includes taking a welldeserved moment for yourself!
That’s why we’ve created spaces where you can feel relaxed, recharged, and ready to enjoy the day.
Tog Bag Area: Need a safe spot to stash your things while you run or cheer from the sidelines?
Our secure Tog Bag area has you covered — so you can move freely and focus on making memories, not holding bags.
Kiddies Corner: We’ve got the little ones entertained too! The Kiddies Corner is packed with fun, supervised activities to keep them happy while you take time to thrive. Think crafts, games, and loads of laughs — a mini adventure just for them!
Challenge Day is more than a race — it’s a celebration of empowerment, community, and thriving in every season of life. So, grab your running shoes, your bestie, and your sparkle — because #Twenty20Thrive is all about you!

Thrive Lightly, Tread Kindly
In the spirit of this year’s theme, #Twenty20Thrive, we’re taking a small step toward making a big difference. To reduce waste and be kinder to the planet, this year’s Challenge Pack will not include a peak cap.
But don’t worry — we’ve still got you covered (literally)! We’ve set aside 5,000 peak caps that will be available for collection at the Registration Zone on Challenge Day. So if you’d like one, just pop by and grab yours — first come, first served!
Why the change? In past years, we noticed many caps left behind or thrown away, which goes against SPAR’s spirit of community care and sustainability we’re all about. This new approach helps reduce unnecessary waste and ensures that only those who really want a cap take one home.
Take what you need. Leave a lighter footprint. Thrive responsibly.
Exciting News! Earn Discovery Vitality Points
We’re thrilled to announce that participants in the timed 10km SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane can now earn Discovery Vitality points! That’s right — not only will you be thriving on the track, but your healthy lifestyle will now be officially rewarded.
This exciting new development is available exclusively for the 10km event, not the 5km Fun Run, so lace up those running shoes and get ready to go the distance.
When you register, keep an eye out for details on how to link your entry with your Vitality profile and claim those well-earned points. It’s one more reason to challenge yourself, hit that personal best, and thrive on Challenge Day! Run for your health. Run for the points. Run to thrive!

SPAR Cares: A Legacy of Thriving Women
As you eagerly anticipate the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, lacing up your running shoes and preparing for a day of camaraderie and achievement, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the driving force behind this incredible event: SPAR.
SPAR
has been a familiar name in our homes for many years, providing us with everyday essentials. But its commitment extends far beyond the aisles of our stores. SPAR is a dedicated supporter of community initiatives, and its sponsorship portfolio, particularly their long-standing investment in women’s sports, is a testament to their purpose: to inspire people to do and be more.
SPAR’s involvement in sports spans various disciplines, but its dedication to empowering women through athletics shines brightest with the SPAR Women’s Challenge series. This iconic race, held annually in various cities across South Africa, including our very own Tshwane, has become a cornerstone of the local running calendar. It’s more than just a race; it’s a celebration of women’s strength, resilience, and the power of collective effort.

The SPAR Women’s Challenge series isn’t just about the thousands of participants who pound the pavement each year. It’s also the foundation for the prestigious SPAR Grand Prix, a series of races that showcases the incredible talent of South Africa’s elite female athletes. This national competition provides a platform for these women to compete at the highest level, inspiring a new generation of runners and demonstrating the incredible potential within women’s sport.
Ms Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager at SPAR, sheds light on the company’s commitment: “At SPAR, we believe in the power of people. Our sponsorship of the SPAR Women’s Challenge and the SPAR Grand Prix is deeply rooted in our purpose to inspire people to do and be more. We see the dedication, the passion, and the sheer determination of the women who participate, both at the elite and grassroots levels, and it resonates with our core values.”
The impact of SPAR’s investment is undeniable. The SPAR Women’s Challenge has become a vital platform for promoting healthy lifestyles, fostering community spirit, and raising funds for worthy causes. Beyond the physical benefits, the race cultivates a sense of belonging and empowerment amongst participants.
Ms Maubane further emphasises this: “The SPAR Women’s Challenge is more than just a race; it’s a movement. The event is not only about health and fitness but it is also a powerful movement against period poverty and Gender-Based Violence. These are platforms to raise awareness and resources to ensure no girl child lacks access to necessities like sanitary pads and to stand in solidarity with victims of GBV. We will not look away while other women are denied basic hygiene needs or victimised by violence. We are incredibly proud to lead in creating this space where women can challenge themselves, support each other, and celebrate their achievements. The energy and camaraderie at these events are truly inspiring.”
The SPAR Grand Prix, on the other hand, elevates the profile of women’s athletics in South Africa. By providing a competitive platform and substantial prize money, SPAR incentivises excellence and supports the professional growth of female athletes. These athletes become role models, inspiring countless young girls to pursue their own sporting dreams.
“The SPAR Grand Prix is crucial for the development of women’s athletics in South Africa,” explains Ms Maubane. “It allows our talented athletes to compete at a high level, gain national recognition, and ultimately inspire future generations. We are committed to fostering an environment where these athletes can thrive and reach their full potential.”
As you prepare for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, remember that you are part of something bigger. You are contributing to a legacy of empowerment and supporting a company that genuinely invests in the well-being and success of women. SPAR’s commitment goes beyond simply sponsoring an event; it’s about fostering a spirit of achievement, encouraging personal growth, and inspiring us all to strive for more.
So, take a moment to appreciate the partnership that makes this incredible event possible. Thank you, SPAR, for filling our grocery baskets, fueling our aspirations, and empowering women to achieve greatness, one stride at a time. We look forward to seeing you at the finish line!

At the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, thousands of women come together each year to celebrate strength, determination, and the power of community. But this event is about more than just crossing the finish line — it’s about embracing a lifestyle of thriving in every aspect of life. And that’s where the SPAR2U online delivery app comes in.

Corli Prinsloo
Thriving to me is doing meaningful things, doing what I love, being creative and having inner peace. Asking myself if I am progressing, learning and creating in ways that matter. Being alive and present in every single moment and, most importantly, in my daily life... for myself and those around me.

Life is short; wear what dazzles and drink what delights. Thrive in style!

To thrive is to align with yourself.— emotionally, spiritually, in every way

#Twenty20Thrive means resetting your mind, embracing new opportunities and learning from the past. Taking what you’ve done in the past and exploring new opportunities without fear and with a song in your heart.
Vanes-Mari Du Toit
Thriving isn’t about reaching the top. It’s about pushing past fear, stepping outside your comfort zone, and continuing anyway— even when it’s tough.
Waney (Rynhardt Schoeman)
In 2025, I thrive by focusing on my career and striving for excellence, nurturing healthy relationships, and embracing the joy of travel. Balancing ambition with personal well-being keeps me motivated and inspired.

Janey (Jana Jooste)
“Lose weight” “Look good in a bikini”. These have always been on my New Year’s resolutions list. And while exercising and eating well was also part of my goal for 2025, this year, my “why” looks a lot different. This year, I am thriving because I am making healthier choices. Sleeping better, eating better and realising that you don’t need to live off lettuce and cucumber to be healthy. I am thriving because I gave up on striving for the perfect body, but rather for a healthy one. I am thriving because I am enjoying life and not punishing myself when I eat a cinnamon roll (or 2). I believe that “Life is for living” and with a healthy balance, you will thrive while you’re alive!
Vuvu Zongo
Honestly, the fact that we’ve made it through the chaos of COVID-19 and found our footing again - we are standing and flourishing. I can attribute it to one thing that has always had a major impact on my lifemaking a decision. I chose to make the best of a hard situation. A lot was uncertain and my job was at risk with retrenchments looming and a toddler in my lap. I lost people close to me and nothing felt certain. But it was through those moments of adversity where I saw God’s grace and began to have gratitude and humility in the simple fact that I am alive. Coming from ashes to glory, I am not just surviving, I am thriving.
Lerato Mokhaneli
Thriving in 2025 means pushing through - building mental, emotional and physical strength and continuing to show up—even on the days when it’s hard.

Tamlyn Wessels
I am going to make 2025 a year to remember! Each new year has its challenges but also its blessings and this year I am going to focus on all the small blessings I have and be positive for another day to live. I am going to focus on personal growth, prioritising balance and well-being. I am going to try and be a better person each day and do things out of my comfort zone to make the most out of every opportunity!
Warrior Ric
When I think of #Twenty20Thrive I’m reminded of lockdown, when everyone said, “I’m just coping.” Back then, it was understandable. We were caught between survival and thriving. But here’s the thing: coping isn’t enough anymore. You’re alive—so live. And in living, you thrive. Sometimes that means struggle, challenges, even weakness. But as the Bible says, it’s in our weakness that our spirit grows strong. Thriving isn’t about always being strong—it’s about choosing growth, even in the fire. So let’s stop settling for just coping. Even being in it is part of the thrive. Let’s claim it. Let’s celebrate it.
Rozanne McKenzie
In #Twenty20Thrive I want to seize every opportunity that comes my way. Jump in with both feet and see what happens, instead of asking “What if?” If you don’t try, you’ll never know, so my plan for this year is to just keep trying and just keep going.

Adré Müller
#Twenty20thrive is less judgment and more compassion and compliments because my light will not be dimmed by giving another woman a beautiful compliment.
Hanna Grobler
In 2025 I will be present in every moment to appreciate and realise all the blessings I have. It’s only when we have an attitude of gratitude that we move from merely surviving to thriving. When you are aware of the struggles other people are facing...your own challenges suddenly look small. If you see the positive in each day and decide to have a “full glass” you will thrive in whatever you do or wherever you are. Cheers to each precious moment...and thriving instead of surviving!
Annelie Bouwer
To thrive is so much more than just to survive –when you thrive, you choose to grow and flourish despite challenging circumstances, and to do so with passion, a touch of compassion, a bit of humour, and style.

Martin Bester
You can’t thrive without saying yes! Thriving is grabbing opportunities. Don’t just wait for things to happen, go out there and make it happen! Open your own doors!
Ouma Tema
The only way forward is forward. And if you understand that, you realise that there is indeed a light at the end of the tunnel, but the tricky part is going through the tunnel. So the only way to thrive is to move forward.
Packing the Spirit of

At SPAR, we believe in more than just supporting communities—we believe in uplifting them. That’s why we are honoured to partner once again with Irene Homes, a truly inspiring organisation that has been at the forefront of care and advocacy for adults with intellectual disabilities for over 121 years.
Irene Homes offers far more than shelter. It’s a place of purpose, care, and connection. As one of the few national facilities of its kind, it provides a loving environment where individuals with intellectual disabilities are supported to live meaningful lives.
SPAR and Irene Homes share a vision: to create a world where people of all abilities are embraced, empowered, and given equal opportunities to thrive. Our collaboration through the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane is a testament to that commitment. Every goodie bag packed and every race T-shirt folded by a beneficiary is purposeful work—building confidence, skills, and a sense of community.
Irene Homes Community
In the heart of Irene, Pretoria, Irene Homes rests on a peaceful 8.2-acre estate near Irene Farm. The campus includes six residential homes, workshops, a clinic, chapel, hall, Charity Shop, and administrative centre. But the true heartbeat of the home lies in its people.
A dedicated team of 65 staff members, including caregivers, housemothers, and clinicians, supports 88 residents and 45 day workers with compassion and professionalism. A Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, and two Registered Nurses ensure residents’ well-being is holistically cared for, with scheduled medication, weekly medical consultations, and daily attention.
Residents are encouraged to grow through structured workshops designed around their individual strengths. Though intellectual disabilities may not be curable, guided support and development can foster independence and self-confidence. For many, Irene Homes is not just a residence—it’s a launchpad for progress.
As a nonprofit, Irene Homes relies on donations and partnerships. That’s why initiatives like the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane are not just meaningful—they’re vital.
The SPAR Effect
The annual SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane goodie bag packing
project is a highlight for both Irene Homes and SPAR. When our brightly coloured trucks arrive, the excitement is palpable. Residents eagerly unpack the items—lotions, chocolates, vouchers, T-shirts—ready to organise and prepare each pack with pride.
The packing process is more than work—it’s therapy, skill-building, and fun rolled into one. Beneficiaries develop teamwork, time management, and coordination, all while laughing, listening to music, and occasionally competing in friendly packing challenges.
Facilitators keep the process smooth and supportive, punctuated by board games, bingo, and well-earned snacks. Each goodie bag becomes a symbol of dignity and inclusion, reminding recipients that someone took the time to pack it with care.
Challenge Day Pride and Purpose
As Challenge Day nears, Irene Homes buzzes with anticipation. Participants receive their T-shirts and rise early with excitement, supporting

one another like a bridal party on a wedding day.
At the starting line, they represent more than Irene Homes—they stand for resilience, inclusion, and the power of being seen. Their smiles aren’t just for the camera—they’re for the journey they’ve walked, and the future they continue to build.
Building a Future Together
SPAR’s partnership with Irene Homes is more than a project—it’s a shared mission. Together, we are breaking down barriers, challenging perceptions, and redefining what thriving looks like for people with intellectual disabilities.
At Irene Homes, every individual journeys at their own pace. As the Maori word for autism— “Takiwatanga”—so beautifully expresses, we honour each person’s unique rhythm. Every step forward is a victory, and we celebrate them all.
Because when we walk together, we don’t just survive. We #Twenty20Thrive.
The Courage to

As the vibrant energy of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane draws closer, promising a day of collective achievement and community spirit, we invite you to delve into a story that embodies the very heart of hope and the unwavering commitment to a safer future for all. Sanet Basson’s journey, a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit, is inextricably linked with the compassionate support of SPAR, the timely interventions of Good Morning Angels, and the nurturing embrace of the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Nylstroom. Her narrative, rising from the shadows of Gender Based Violence (GBV), resonates deeply with SPAR’s proactive and impactful stance against this pervasive societal issue, transforming her triumph into a beacon of hope for countless others.
Sanet’s young life took an arduous turn, leading her to the sanctuary of the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Nylstroom in March 2017. The trauma she had endured – the pain of GBV, the vulnerability of neglect, the scars of abuse – painted a stark picture of the challenges faced by far too many in our society. The children’s home became her haven, where the slow but steady healing process could begin, nurtured by the consistent care and unwavering support of dedicated individuals. Within those walls, amidst the shared experiences of other vulnerable children, Sanet found a semblance of stability and the first glimmers of a future she could scarcely imagine.
Navigating the complexities of adolescence within the supportive environment of the home, Sanet faced a new and unexpected physical challenge in her Grade 10 year. The development of a persistent brachial cyst brought with it not only physical pain, a constant reminder of her body’s fragility, but also a significant blow to her self-esteem during a time when identity and selfimage are so acutely felt. This added burden felt immense for a young girl who had already weathered so much. The reliance on state medical care presented further anxieties, highlighting the systemic challenges in accessing timely and specialised treatment for those most vulnerable.
The recurring inflammation became a constant companion, impacting her ability to concentrate on her studies, hindering her participation in school activities, and casting a shadow over her interactions with her peers. The physical discomfort was intertwined with emotional distress, a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of well-being. Yet, even in the face of this adversity, Sanet’s inner strength, nurtured by the unwavering belief of the caregivers at the children’s home, began to shine through.
A turning point arrived during her crucial matric year, a year that often dictates the trajectory of a young person’s future. The compassionate hearts at Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels, renowned for their ability to bring hope into seemingly insurmountable situations, heard Sanet’s story. Recognising the urgency of her medical needs and the potential impact on her academic success, they rallied support facilitated by SPAR’s overarching commitment to community upliftment and women empowerment. This collaborative effort, bridging media advocacy and corporate responsibility, secured Sanet the private medical intervention she so desperately needed.
The successful removal of the cyst before her matric farewell and final examinations was more than just a medical triumph; it was a liberation. Freed from the constant pain and the associated emotional weight, Sanet could finally focus her full attention on her studies. Her subsequent academic achievements, culminating in results that opened the doors to university, stand as a powerful testament to her inherent intelligence, her unwavering determination, and the profound impact of timely and compassionate support.
The ripple effect of Sanet’s journey extended far beyond her success. The media attention surrounding her story illuminated the often-unseen challenges faced by children in vulnerable circumstances and underscored the vital role played by organisations like the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home. This exposure also brought forth an extraordinary opportunity – a private

scholarship that lifted the financial burden of higher education, allowing Sanet to pursue her dreams without constraint.
Today, Sanet is on the cusp of achieving her Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree from the prestigious University of Pretoria. Her choice of education as her field of study speaks volumes about her desire to empower others and become a guiding light for future generations, much like the caregivers who supported her. Her journey embodies the essence of paying it forward, transforming her experiences into a powerful force for good.
Reflecting on her time at the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home, Sanet’s words paint a vivid picture of a nurturing sanctuary: “The children’s home became my home. As soon as I strayed from the path, the children’s home staff disciplined me like parents, took my hand, and redirected me to the right path. The home is not only a place of safety; people there see your potential and help you to the best of their ability to make progress in life.” Her gratitude underscores the profound impact of consistent care and unwavering belief in a child’s potential.
She eloquently articulates the vital role of community in her transformation: “There is a saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’. I know that I, and everyone else at Abraham Kriel Children’s Home, were very fortunate to have had a community that helped each other to raise us. The children’s home was my greatest gift from God.” This sentiment resonates deeply with SPAR’s understanding of community responsibility and its commitment to creating a supportive ecosystem for those in need.
Now, as Sanet embarks on her career as a teacher at Laerskool Eugene Marais in Mokgopong, she carries with her the knowledge gained through her studies and the profound lessons learned through her life experiences. She is a living embodiment of hope, a testament to the transformative power of compassion and resilience.
Her journey, marked by the initial trauma of GBV, finds a powerful parallel in SPAR’s unwavering commitment to
combating this societal scourge. For SPAR, the fight against GBV is not a peripheral concern but a core value, a deeply felt responsibility to create safer communities for all.
Their long-standing partnership with LifeLine has created vital support structures for victims of GBV, strengthening hotline infrastructure and expanding access to trained counsellors through confidential channels like WhatsApp. Integrating LifeLine counsellors into the SPAR National Netball Championships demonstrates their commitment to creating safe spaces within their sponsored events.
Furthermore, SPAR’s collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority and Thuthuzela Care Centres provides crucial support to survivors, offering comfort and care and contributing to the expansion of these vital resources in underserved areas. Their proactive approach extends to prevention through education, partnering with Trulife to empower young people with knowledge about gender equality and healthy relationships. The Uyinene Safety App, developed in collaboration with the Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation, directly addresses safety concerns within tertiary institutions. Even their everyday shopping bags carry a message of hope and help, displaying emergency contact information. Internally, the SafeSpaces@SPAR initiative provides a crucial support system for employees affected by GBV. Recognising the magnitude of the challenge, SPAR actively collaborates with other organisations like Standard Bank CIB and Motus to amplify their impact.
Sanet’s story, rising from the ashes of GBV, underscores the profound importance of SPAR’s commitment. The safety and nurturing environment she found at the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home, coupled with the timely medical intervention facilitated by Good Morning Angels and supported by SPAR’s broader community ethos, highlight the power of collective action in breaking cycles of violence and vulnerability.
As you run the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, let Sanet’s journey inspire you. Your participation is not just a personal achievement; it is an act of solidarity, a step towards a community where hope triumphs over adversity and where organisations like SPAR stand firm in their commitment to creating a future free from GBV. Together, we run for hope, for healing, and for a future where every individual can thrive, free from fear and violence.
In the spirit of paying it forward, the Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Nylstroom is giving back to the community by hosting its very own SPAR Women’s Challenge in Limpopo! This initiative aims to inspire, uplift, and create opportunities for women and girls in the region — echoing the courage and resilience of stories like Sanet’s. Uplifting a Village, One Race at a Time
What does it mean to truly thrive? For Patricia Matsinye, thriving means rising from unimaginable tragedy, finding purpose in pain, and empowering hundreds of women to believe in their strength, their stories, and their sisterhood.
Patricia’s journey to becoming a beloved community influencer was born from heartbreak. After losing her husband and two children in a devastating car accident, she survived weeks in ICU alongside her sister-inlaw—the only other survivor. In that quiet aftermath, a new purpose began to take root. “God was opening another chapter for me,” she shares. “Helping widows through their painful and stressful journey.”
That calling led to the founding of Village of Widows Production, an initiative that brings together widows, divorcees, and cancer survivors to share their stories, heal, and rebuild their lives. But Patricia’s influence extends far beyond healing—she is a catalyst for joy, community, and change.
The Heart of the Race
Patricia’s connection to the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane began in 2003, and the race quickly became a cornerstone of her community outreach.
“The SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane is my pride, my home, and my family,” she says.
In 2008, pregnant with her daughter, she walked the Challenge route, returning a year later with her baby girl in tow. The event became more than just a run—it became tradition, transformation, and togetherness.
Her passion soon turned into purpose. In recent years, Patricia has rallied an astonishing 260 women from her community to enter the race. “I lead
without fear,” she says. “I want to help women experience something greater, connect, share ideas, and believe in themselves.”
With plans to grow that number to 400 this year, Patricia’s efforts are a testament to what one empowered woman can achieve when driven by love and community.
Overcoming Barriers, Creating Belonging
Organising hundreds of entries is no easy feat, but Patricia tackled it with determination and creativity. Through WhatsApp groups, she coordinated everything from T-shirt sizes and payments to shared transport logistics— ensuring each woman had a place and a plan.
“On Challenge Day, when I see all the women gathered, smiling, united... I feel proud,” she says. “I look around Supersport Park and say to myself, ‘Well done Patricia—you played a part in this.’”
The ripple effect is real. Women in her community are empowered through connection, movement, and the joy of being seen and celebrated. “It brings joy and they can’t wait for the next race,” she adds. “They’re inspired by the goodies and encouraged by the experience.”
Giving Back with Heart
The Challenge’s commitment to supporting charities deeply resonates with Patricia. For her, giving back is a spiritual gift and a way of life. “It’s close to my heart,” she says. “It’s who I’ve always been.”

Her track record of service is extensive—breast cancer awareness drives, soup campaigns, safety awareness for children, cancer survivor tours, and more. Many of these initiatives have been supported by SPAR and other local partners—proving the power of collaboration between individuals and institutions.
A Message for Women Everywhere
To women who may feel hesitant to participate, Patricia offers this encouragement: “Let’s come out of our comfort zones and prioritise change. Choose yourself. Action is the best tool when you’re undecided.”
For Patricia, thriving means growth, generosity, and bold leadership. It means planting seeds in the minds of others, nurturing them with belief and purpose, and watching communities flourish.
And if she had to sum up the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane in one word? Champions.
“We are champions,” she smiles. “And this race brings out the best in all of us.”
A Perfect Pitch, a Powerful

your role matters. That even the little things make a big difference.”

YesIn South Africa, stories of resilience often rise from adversity. Nyeleti Moagi’s journey from financial hardship to becoming a computer engineering student is a powerful testament to the transformative power of opportunity—and the courage it takes to ask for help.
Raised in Pretoria by a single mother, Nyeleti was always driven. At Oostend Primary and Langenhoven High, she was active in sports, served as a prefect, won accolades on Entrepreneurs Day, and participated in disability awareness initiatives. Her early life was filled with promise. But her dreams faced a devastating setback.
Despite being accepted at Rhodes University, financial struggles forced Nyeleti to drop out. With no funds to pay off existing fees or re-register, and with her mother unable to support the household, Nyeleti juggled two jobs to help cover essentials like groceries and electricity. Eventually, her studies suffered, and she took a gap year—one filled with uncertainty and a desperate search for support.
“All I ever wanted was to study and graduate,” she recalls. “Education felt like the only way forward.”
Her life changed at the 2024 Her Perfect Pitch event, which celebrated women-led entrepreneurship and offered a platform for connection. It was here that she heard Promise Mantome— SPAR’s Human Resource Development Manager—speak passionately about SPAR’s youth programmes and bursary opportunities.
Though nervous, Nyeleti approached her. “I was used to telling my story and getting no help,” she says. “But this time, Promise listened.”
Promise’s response was simple yet lifechanging: “I’m going to help you.” That moment sparked a complete turnaround in Nyeleti’s life. She was offered a SPAR bursary—on the condition that she also work part-time at one of their stores.
“For me, it wasn’t a hurdle. It was a solution,” Nyeleti shares. “I needed both a job and funding. It was like all my problems were answered at once.”
Now studying Computer Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Nyeleti sees her future clearly: she dreams of working as a computer engineer for SPAR, helping improve their systems and using tech to create real impact. “SPAR isn’t just a store—it’s a family. It’s a place that believed in me when I needed it most.”
Her work experience has given her invaluable insights into life and leadership. As a cashier and shelf packer, she’s come to understand the power of small acts— like smiling at a customer or offering a helping hand. “SPAR teaches you that
But Nyeleti’s transformation is not just academic or professional—it’s deeply personal. “For the first time, I feel hopeful,” she says. “I feel like I’m finally building a life I can be proud of. And one day, I want to do the same for someone else.”
From Limpopo Roots to Lifesaving Impact
Promise Mantome, the woman who changed Nyeleti’s life, understands the weight of limited opportunities. Raised in Limpopo, Promise watched her own mother—despite lacking formal education—run a successful spaza shop that funded her children’s schooling. That example inspired Promise’s passion for empowering women.
Promise began her career at SPAR 17 years ago as a graduate. Over the years, she grew into various leadership roles, eventually returning to SPAR after a short hiatus to serve as Human Resource Development Manager.
At the heart of her work is a mission: to ensure that more women—like her mother, like Nyeleti—get a fair chance.
“When I met Nyeleti, her story reminded me of my own,” says Promise. “She was brave enough to ask. I had the resources, and I knew I had to help.”
This ethos is embedded in SPAR’s values. The company actively champions women through education, leadership training, and inclusive hiring. Their learnership programmes require 50% female participation, and they run impactful initiatives like Developing Women in Leadership—preparing women for senior roles.
They’re also invested in critical social issues like Gender-Based Violence (GBV), offering platforms and support for women to share their experiences and access help.
But SPAR’s support goes beyond policy. It’s practical. Through its partnership with the Wholesale and Retail SETA, SPAR not only funded Nyeleti’s tuition but also provided a laptop, textbooks, internet access, and the tools she needed to succeed.
“This is about more than bursaries,” says Promise. “It’s about giving young women real, lasting pathways to success.”
A Ripple Effect of Empowerment
What makes Nyeleti’s story so powerful is that it doesn’t end with her. She sees

herself as part of a larger movement—and she’s already thinking about how she can give back.
“I want to help someone else the way Promise helped me,” she says. “Even if I’m not rich, I can still support someone. We, as women, need to lift each other up.”
Her journey embodies the theme of this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane: #Twenty20Thrive. It’s about growth, resilience, and the power of asking boldly for what you need—and being ready to receive it.
The SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane is more than a race. It’s a national platform that brings together over 15,000 women each year to celebrate strength, share stories, and raise funds for vital causes. It’s about building a collective voice that says, “We are here, and we are thriving.”
SPAR’s purpose goes far beyond retail, they aim to inspire people to do and be more. They see themselves as a community partner—a brand rooted in real people, real change, and real empowerment.

Advice to Young Women: “Keep Asking”
To young women who feel stuck or overwhelmed, Nyeleti has one message: “Keep telling your story. You never know who’s listening.”
Catching Up with Mo’s Crib: Still Crafting and Thriving
Mo’s Crib, led by Mo and Michelle, empowers women through job creation and wellness, with 87% of their artisan workforce being female. Supported by meals, medical care, and personal development, they’ve built a purposedriven culture.
Amid global growth, they’ve embraced challenges—winning the Veuve Clicquot Bold Woman Award and Jacaranda FM’s Her Perfect Pitch in 2023, which spurred funding, innovation with recycled materials, and new retail partnerships. As SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane ambassadors, they continue to spotlight women-led success.
They’ve also launched a retail distribution channel for local artisans, boosting their income and visibility. For 2025, their focus is sustainable job creation, a recycled PVC furniture line, and retail factory stores in Pretoria and Cape Town.
Their advice? Start small, solve real problems, and build strong networks. In five years, they aim to be global leaders in sustainable homeware—uplifting communities and honouring the platforms that helped them thrive.
She recalls how she almost gave up asking for help—until that one bold moment at Her Perfect Pitch opened a new path.
“I was tired. I felt like no one was hearing me. But Promise did,” she says. “If I had stayed silent that day, I might still be at home. Instead, I’m working toward my degree, and I have a future to look forward to.”
Promise echoes this message: “Don’t be afraid to take up space. Identify your passion, invest in yourself, and trust that opportunities are out there. Sometimes, all it takes is one bold step.”
Looking ahead, SPAR remains committed to expanding its reach— supporting more women through mentorship, education, and leadership development. Their goal is clear: to build an inclusive, empowered society where everyone has the chance to thrive.
And thanks to that one moment of courage, Nyeleti is not just thriving—she’s leading the way.
Her Perfect Pitch 2024 winners Retang and Nondumiso of Setšong Tea Crafters are still thriving — uplifting women, preserving tradition, and growing their impact.

The Light They Left Behind Through Loss
This year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane embraces the powerful theme #Twenty20Thrive, encouraging women from all walks of life to rise, rebuild, and reach beyond. But for many women, thriving is not just about goal-setting or physical endurance. It’s about healing. It’s about choosing joy even when sorrow lingers. It’s about carrying the ones we’ve lost as we forge ahead.
For Ouma Tema, fashion entrepreneur and founder of Plus-Fab, and Adré Müller, fitness athlete and motivational speaker, the concept of thriving has been shaped by deep, personal loss. Ouma walks forward with the memory of her late mother close to her heart, while Adré, who lost both her parents in a short space of time, continues to draw strength from their love.
Fabric of Grief, Threads of Hope
There’s power in Ouma Tema’s words. She speaks like someone who knows pain intimately—but who has also learned how to hold it gently. As the founder of Plus-Fab, a celebrated fashion brand for plus-size women, Ouma is known for dressing women in confidence. But behind the glamour is a woman who is navigating the slow, often silent terrain of grief.
“I’m still figuring out this new normal,” she shares. “The journey of life is learning to carry the grief. Sometimes I cry, sometimes I laugh. I’ve collected memories that help me carry on—but I’ll always carry this grief.” Her mother, a pillar of strength and gentleness, was not only her parent but her cheerleader and grounding force. “She rooted for me. She prayed for me. She loved with everything she had. And when I

succeed, I know it’s because she paved the way.”
One of her most cherished memories is a trip to Victoria Falls, her mother’s first time out of the country. “She was so happy. I’d promised to take her to the Zambian side one day, but she passed before we could go. So last year, on my birthday, I went back to complete the circle. I did it for both of us.”
As Ouma continues to build her business, her mother’s spirit remains stitched into every design, every seam, every intention. “At Plus-Fab, we don’t just make clothes—we create a space for women to feel worthy. My mom’s belief in me made this possible.” For her, thriving is about moving forward with purpose. “The only way forward is forward,” she says. “You don’t get to choose resilience. Life hands it to you. But what you choose is whether or not to stand in it.”
From Grief to Grace, One Rep at a Time
Adré has become a beacon of authenticity on social media—a space where she shares not just her wins, but her wounds. Her transformation from content creator to Protea athlete began not with ambition, but with grief. “After my father died, I became my mother’s

caregiver,” she explains. “Then I lost her too. It broke me in ways I didn’t expect.”
In the stillness of loss, she found her anchor in movement. “Fitness became my therapy. Each workout, each rep, was a way to fight for my mental health. The gym wasn’t about aesthetics—it was survival. It was healing. And it was honouring them.”
One of the most powerful parts of Adré’s story is her decision to share it. “I didn’t want my parents to be forgotten. My mom told me I’d always be her cover girl. That voice still plays in my head. Sharing my grief openly is how I keep them alive—it’s how I light the way for others.” Her daily rituals— sending a
balloon letter to heaven, voicenotes from her mom, texts to her dad’s old number—are sacred. “They remind me that love doesn’t end. It transforms. It travels with you.”
Adré believes thriving isn’t about perfection. “Some days, it’s lifting heavy. On other days, it’s just making your bed. Thriving is choosing to show up with kindness, even when your heart is breaking. It’s deciding to carry the light forward.” With her husband as her rock and her laughter as medicine, Adré’s life is a testament to what it means to heal out loud. “I cry often, but I laugh every single day. And that balance—that joy— is how I keep going.”
You are capable of hard things. Your light matters. Keep moving forward—even when it feels impossible.
That’s what it means to #Twenty20Thrive.
– Adré Müller
From Memory to Movement: Empowering Others
Both women have turned their grief into guidance—not just for themselves, but for the communities they serve. For Ouma, that means building employment opportunities through fashion. “I dream of training unemployed women in garment-making. When women are economically empowered, they can walk away from abuse. They can choose safety.”
For Adré, charity is deeply personal. She and her mom once packed handbags filled with essentials and notes of worth for survivors of GenderBased Violence. “We never posted about it. It was just something we did because women need to be reminded: you are worthy, even in your pain.”
These acts—private, powerful—speak to a deeper truth: thriving doesn’t always look like triumph. Sometimes it looks like continuing. Sometimes it looks like community.

As the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane approaches, both Ouma and Adré are preparing to walk—not just for themselves, but for every woman finding her footing after loss. “This is a race for everyone,” says Ouma. “You can walk with your child, your friend, or your grief. Come as you are. We dance, we laugh, we sing. That’s what this Challenge is— togetherness.”
Adré adds, “Every step you take is an act of defiance against pain. You are proof that even broken hearts can move forward. Walk for the ones you miss. Walk for the woman you are becoming.”

Music, Resilience and Finding Strength Through Struggle Healing to
WAt the age of 12, Tamlyn Wessels was like any other young girl—full of energy, dreams, and music. But in a matter of hours, her world came crashing down. What started as weakness in her limbs rapidly escalated into full-body paralysis. Within 24 hours of her first symptoms, she couldn’t breathe on her own. She was rushed to hospital, intubated, and lying in ICU. That night, she was placed into a medically induced coma.

hen she awoke, Tamlyn found herself in a living nightmare. She could hear voices around her, process thoughts in her mind, but not move a single muscle—not even her eyelids. She was trapped in a body that had simply stopped responding.
The diagnosis was Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. Doctors told her and her family that recovery would be long, painful, and uncertain. Some never fully recover. For four months, she lived in the ICU, followed by another four months in rehabilitation. Life had changed irrevocably.
“I was completely paralysed,” Tamlyn remembers. “It felt like being locked inside my own body. I was awake, I could hear and think, but I couldn’t respond. Not even blink. That moment changed everything.”
Tamlyn began high school in a wheelchair, navigating classrooms and corridors while still learning to regain basic physical control. Even today, nearly a decade later, she wears ankle support braces and lives with permanent effects of the illness, including drop foot.
And yet—she glows. Not with bitterness, but with a kind of quiet power that can only come from walking through fire and choosing to keep walking.
Choosing Hope Over Helplessness
For many, those early months would have bred despair. But for Tamlyn, giving up was never an option. Her spirit, even at that young age, refused to be defeated. “I knew I was going to survive. It didn’t matter how long it would take—I just knew I’d make it out alive.”
It was the people around her—her parents, family, and friends—who gave her the courage to endure. They were brutally honest about the battle ahead, but lovingly present through every second of it. She found strength in comparison. Looking around the ICU, she saw people fighting to survive— and some who never walked out. That became her motivation. “I realised that just waking up every day was a blessing. That alone was worth fighting for.”
Each day brought small, hard-won victories: moving a finger, sitting upright, taking her first assisted steps. Those milestones became her fuel. Recovery wasn’t fast or complete—but it was hers. Every step meant something. Every breath, a win.
Music: Her Second Language
Throughout her journey, one thing remained constant—music. Even when she couldn’t speak, music became her refuge, her language, her therapy. “Music was my voice when I didn’t have one,” she says. “I used to only listen. But later, I started writing. It helped me say what I couldn’t say out loud.”
In her darkest hours, she found solace in the lyrics of artists like Lauren Daigle and Sia. But one song in particular, Daigle’s Hold On To Me, became her personal anthem. “The lyrics—‘when the best of me is barely breathing… Hold on to me’—felt like God’s own words to me. It made me feel seen, even when I was completely silent.”
Today, Tamlyn creates her own music. Some of it is raw and reflective, other songs are light and feel-good. But all of them are rooted in one message: joy is possible—even after pain. “I want people to forget their struggles for a little while when I perform. I want them to feel good. Sometimes healing means letting yourself have fun.”

Running for a Reason
Now, Tamlyn’s journey has come full circle. This year, she’s a proud voice and participant in the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane—an event dedicated to empowering women and supporting survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). “I take every opportunity I can to share my story. I am so excited to be a part of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane—because it’s not just about the Challenge. It’s about women. About healing. About hope.”
Tamlyn connects deeply with the event’s purpose. Having lived through a
deeply isolating experience herself, she knows the power of women standing together. The #Twenty20Thrive theme resonates with her own life mantra. “Thriving isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing up. About being optimistic and choosing to see the good in life, even when it’s hard.”
She sees the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane not only as a celebration of strength but as a reminder that no woman is alone. “We’re stronger when we stand together. We should support each other through the healing, not just focus on preventing harm. There’s so much power in connection.”
A Legacy of Light
Tamlyn isn’t just a survivor—she’s a voice of encouragement, especially for young women navigating their own battles. “I want to be remembered for my positivity. I want people to look at me and say, ‘If she can go through all that and still smile, then so can I.’”
Each day, she sets small goals—to bring joy, to make someone laugh, to reflect on how far she’s come. And when doubt inevitably creeps in—as it does for all of us—she centres herself by counting her blessings. “There are days where the pressure gets heavy. But then I remind myself of everything I’ve survived. Everything I’ve overcome. And it puts things back into perspective.”
Her faith is the thread that ties it all together. It carried her when her body couldn’t. It lifted her when her mind wavered. And today, it fuels her mission to change lives with her story. When asked what she would say to her younger self—lying helpless in that hospital bed, facing a future filled with unknowns—Tamlyn doesn’t hesitate. “Take it easy. God is preparing you to change the lives of a thousand other people.”
And with every note she sings, every footfall in her race, every story she shares—she is doing just that.

The Everyday Magic of
When KB Motsilanyane stood centre stage at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, microphone in hand, and sang the national anthem, it wasn’t just a performance—it was a moment of healing, hope, and pride. That powerful voice has carried her through decades in the spotlight, but it’s her quiet strength, deep purpose, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others that truly define her. As she joins the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane this year, KB brings with her a story of alignment, resilience, and what it means to thrive—not just on stage, but in every facet of life. From artist to activist, mother to mentor, she reminds us that thriving is not a destination—it’s a way of showing up for yourself and others, every day.
As the SPAR Women’s Challenge
Tshwane celebrates the power of women to thrive—in every role, season, and space—KB represents a living embodiment of the Challenge’s #Twenty20Thrive theme. Performer, mentor, mother, community builder—she thrives not in spite of these roles, but through them.
“Thriving isn’t about having everything together all the time,” she says, softly but with conviction. “It’s about knowing when to pause, when to reflect, and when to come back stronger.”
For KB, the journey toward thriving has been a layered one. Like many women, she once equated thriving with endless productivity. “I’m a hard worker by nature,” she admits, “but I realised that hard work alone isn’t sustainable. I had to learn how to sit with myself. To listen to what my emotions, my spirit, and my body were telling me. That realignment—emotionally, spiritually— that’s what gives me clarity. It’s where true inspiration is born.”
That clarity became a turning point. Today, KB no longer fights her ‘dry seasons’—the inevitable periods of personal or creative drought that life brings. Instead, she welcomes them as essential. “Even when things feel uncertain or slow, I ask, ‘What am I

meant to learn here?’ Because the lessons I find in those seasons make my thriving seasons so much richer.”
It’s this perspective that makes her partnership with the SPAR Women’s Challenge feel like such a natural fit. Her first experience with the brand came through the Carols by Starlight concert, where she performed to families gathered under festive skies. “It was beautiful. There was such warmth, such unity. That event left me feeling inspired, and I knew it was just the beginning.”
Indeed, it was. This year, KB is joining thousands of women on the start line at the SPAR Women’s Challenge in Tshwane. More than a race, it’s a celebration of strength, solidarity, and shared joy. “What I love most about the Challenge is that it brings women together, shoulder to shoulder, no matter where we come from or what we do. We walk, we run, we share stories. We remind each other that we’re not alone.”
That sense of sisterhood is something KB recognises in her day-to-day work in the entertainment industry too. “There’s a special kind of power in women supporting each other,” she reflects.
“I’ve been blessed to work with women who are brilliant, passionate, generous. We lift each other up, we share advice, and we never compete for the spotlight. There’s space for everyone to shine.”
This ethos—of making room for others, of giving back—is deeply
ingrained in her. As the founder of Mamosadi Outreach, KB hosts workshops for aspiring artists in her hometown. But these aren’t just lessons in singing or performance—they’re about creating ecosystems of opportunity.
“If a young singer is surrounded by a photographer, a stylist, a social media expert, a finance person— suddenly, you’ve created work for five or ten people, all by supporting one dream. That’s the power of creative collaboration.”
Her passion for mentorship extends far beyond the arts. Whether it’s helping a student find a matric dance outfit or simply speaking a kind word to a stranger, KB sees every interaction as a chance to uplift. “We all want to be seen. And sometimes, a compliment, a small act of kindness—is enough to spark something powerful in someone. I don’t take that lightly.”
Her charitable work isn’t just reserved for campaigns or formal outreach programmes. It’s woven into her daily life. “Being generous is a lifestyle, not an event,” she says. “If I overhear someone struggling with transport, I help if I can. If someone looks like they need encouragement, I offer it. For me, giving is about showing up—day by day, moment by moment.”
Despite the many roles she plays, motherhood holds a special place in KB’s heart. “Being a mum is a privilege. It’s joyful, demanding, humbling—and it teaches you so much about patience,

strength, and love.” She also recognises the weight of being seen as a role model. “When a young woman says I’ve helped shape her life, it’s the deepest kind of honour. It reminds me that my choices matter.”
Her own story is filled with defining milestones—singing the national anthem at Loftus, and performing at the World Economic Forum in Davos—but it’s her academic journey that brings out the most emotion. “I went back to university after years away and earned my bachelor’s degree. It was so hard. I’d forgotten why I started. But the moment I graduated—I felt such pride. It reminded me that it’s never too late to invest in yourself.”
Of all the places that have shaped her, Pretoria holds a special place. “That city was where I became an artist. I studied Musical Theatre at TUT, and those years gave me the skills and confidence that still carry me today. It was my launchpad, my proving ground.” When asked to describe Pretoria in one word, she smiles: “A vibe!”
As she looks ahead to this year’s Challenge, KB is full of gratitude—for the journey, for the community, and for the opportunity to connect. “I can’t wait to spend the day with all the women taking part. I want them to know they’re not alone. You are strong, you are capable, and you are worthy.”
And with that, she leaves us with one last reminder: “Sometimes, the best man for the job... is a woman.”

the best man for the job... is a woman.

on Purpose
When Lerato Mokhaneli stood on the starting line of the 2024 SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, she was already carrying more than a race number—she was carrying a promise to herself. As a single mother and selfemployed beautician, Lerato had made the courageous decision to stop putting herself last. She had chosen to prioritise her health, her goals, and her happiness. A year later, under the banner of #Twenty20Thrive, she returns not only as a participant but as a powerful example of what thriving looks like when you stay on course.
“Am I where I want to be? Not quite yet. But I’m nowhere near where I used to be—and that alone is a huge win,” she says with pride. For Lerato, thriving is about progress, not perfection. It’s about showing up daily, pushing through self-doubt, and learning to love herself at every stage of her journey. Her story is one of resilience, growth, and purpose—and it’s inspiring women across the country to believe in their own potential.
Mind Over Matter
Lerato’s transformation over the past year is visible, but the real shift has happened within. Her journey has been a masterclass in mental toughness.
“I’ve learnt that I’m powerful,” she says. “Once I trained my mind to believe I could do it, my body followed.”
From walking short distances to now comfortably running 15km races, her fitness achievements are a testament to the power of mindset. “I thought a 10km would be impossible. But then I ran one. Then 15km. Now I’m preparing for a 21km. The body listens when the mind leads,” she explains.
Lerato’s mental growth has also boosted her self-confidence. Where she once hesitated to show up due to fears of judgement, she now proudly shares her journey with thousands online.

“I had to stop worrying about what people think. I had to love and respect myself first. That’s where real change begins.”
Her emotional transformation has been just as significant. Her improved energy levels and confidence have positively impacted her relationships— especially with her daughter. “My moods have changed. Our bond is stronger. And I’m happier, which makes our home happier,” she reflects.
Balance, Struggle, and Staying the Course
Lerato doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of juggling a demanding life. Between running her business, parenting, and staying active in the fitness space, time is always tight. “I’m not a full-time content creator. I have to hustle, just like everyone else. That’s why time has been my biggest challenge,” she says. And yet, she’s never used that as an excuse. “Whether I want to or not, I get up and go. My schedule says 5km today—I do it. Strength training tomorrow—I do it. I don’t give myself a choice,” she says. This mindset is the cornerstone of her consistency.
Nutrition, once her biggest struggle, is now a work in progress. “Meal prepping changed the game for me,” she says. “When I prep, I stay on track.

When I don’t, I feel it—but I never let one bad week define me. I always come back to my goals.”
Online, Lerato’s authenticity has won hearts. She’s grown her TikTok and Instagram following from a few hundred to nearly 80,000 by staying true to herself. “I don’t sell dreams. I show what’s real—my struggles, my wins, my routine. No filters, no fancy edits. Just me,” she says. “People appreciate that I’m doing this the natural way—no supplements, no shortcuts.”
For Lerato, the #Twenty20Thrive theme is more than a slogan—it’s her personal mantra. “Thriving means pushing harder than last year. Eating cleaner, running further, living better. I’m not just continuing the journey—I’m going all in,” she says.
Giving Back and Building Forward
Lerato’s journey isn’t just about personal growth—it’s deeply rooted in community. Through her beauty school in Soweto, she’s teaching women how to do nails, lashes, and makeup, giving them a way to earn an income and regain their independence. “It’s my passion project,” she says. “It’s how I give back. I don’t charge much—just enough to cover products. I want women to walk away with a skill and a sense of possibility.”
She’s also dreaming bigger: launching a gymwear brand for plus-size women, expanding her online platform, and creating wealth for herself and her family. “I still want to own a property, buy a car, and support my parents who are pensioners. There’s so much I’m working towards—but it all starts with being consistent and believing in myself.”
Through it all, Lerato’s motivation stays anchored in her daughter and her growing online community. “Every time someone messages me saying ‘I started running because of you,’ it gives me the energy to keep going,” she says. “Even if I only inspire one person—it’s worth it.”
Her advice for others starting out is simple and direct: “Start now. Don’t wait. Put on your shoes and go for a 30-minute walk. The hardest part is starting—but that’s the step that changes everything.”

When asked to summarise her journey, Lerato says with a smile: “If consistency was a person, that person would be Lerato M.”
And she’s right. In a world where distractions, doubts, and demands pull us in all directions, Lerato stands out as someone who shows up for herself, no matter what. Her story reminds us that thriving isn’t about perfection—it’s about persistence, purpose, and choosing yourself every single day.
As she steps into this year’s Challenge, Lerato is not just running— she’s leading, she’s empowering, and she’s thriving.

Legacy in Motion Thriving Beyond the Race
As one of the livestream hosts of this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, Zintle embraces the #Twenty20Thrive theme wholeheartedly. She sees thriving as more than just winning—it’s about finding happiness, balance, and purpose in both her personal and professional life. Her story is one of overcoming adversity, managing multiple roles, and using sport as a tool to uplift individuals and communities.
The Power of a Father’s Legacy
For Zintle, running wasn’t just a sport—it was a bond with her father. She fondly remembers travelling with him to various communities, witnessing firsthand the transformative power of sports. “He created little families in each community,” she recalls. “Some of those athletes were like my brothers and sisters. I got to see what sports can do for people—helping kids from difficult backgrounds gain confidence and grow as individuals.”
These experiences ignited her own love for athletics and her deep belief in the power of running to change lives. Beyond competition, she saw running as a means of self-discovery, communitybuilding, and empowerment—values that continue to guide her mission today.
Thriving Means Happiness
In a world that often equates success with external achievements, Zintle defines thriving differently. “For me, thriving

means being happy,” she says. “We often think happiness comes from achieving more, but it starts with being grateful for what you have, while still striving for growth.”
This perspective is deeply embedded in her daily life. Balancing multiple roles—as a mother, sports commentator, and foundation leader—is no easy feat. Yet, she credits time management, prioritisation, and an incredible support system for helping her navigate the demands. “Sometimes I don’t know if I’m coming or going,” she admits with a laugh. “It gets hectic, but I have a husband who is my pillar, a great manager at work, and an amazing team in the foundation. It’s about making sacrifices and knowing when to shift priorities.”
Whether it’s waking up early for a training session or staying up late to prepare for an event, she embraces the challenge with determination, understanding that every small effort contributes to long-term success.
Overcoming Challenges with Honesty and Resilience
Like many athletes, Zintle has faced personal and professional challenges. Yet, her approach to adversity is rooted in self-reflection and solution-driven thinking. “I don’t like discomfort,” she shares. “When I face a challenge, I ask: what’s the root cause? How can I solve it
In the world of South African running, the name Zintle Mokoka resonates with inspiration, determination, and resilience. As the daughter of the legendary marathoner Zithulele ‘Zet’ Sinqe, her journey in athletics was shaped by the unwavering presence of her father, his passion for sports development, and the close-knit communities he built through running. Today, Zintle continues his legacy—not just as an athlete but as a sports commentator, MC, and founder of the Sinqe Foundation, which is dedicated to empowering the next generation of runners.
and prevent it from happening again?”
One of the most defining moments of her life was the loss of her father. Navigating that grief wasn’t easy, but she learned that true healing comes from facing pain rather than avoiding it. “I had to be honest with myself and acknowledge my emotions,” she says. “When you truly understand your challenges, you can find real solutions— not just temporary fixes.” It’s this mindset that has helped her not only grow stronger but also inspire others to find strength in vulnerability.
Zintle believes that her experiences in athletics have shaped her perspective on hard work, patience, and perseverance. “In running, nothing comes easy,” she explains. “If you want to win, you have to train for years. Success doesn’t happen

overnight. I take that same principle into every area of my life.”
Whether in the corporate world, sports commentary, or personal growth, she embraces the long game. She understands that delayed gratification is key—whether it’s waiting for a big breakthrough at work or seeing young athletes grow under her foundation’s guidance. Her journey has also exposed her to South Africa’s rich diversity—meeting people from different backgrounds, understanding their struggles, and embracing their differences. “Before judging someone, I always ask: If I had their life experiences, would I be any different?” she reflects.
From Athlete to Sports Commentator
Transitioning from being an athlete to a commentator wasn’t an easy decision for Zintle. In fact, it was never part of her plan. “Manfred Seidler saw something in me before I saw it in myself,” she recalls. “When he first approached me about commentating, the thought terrified me. But I realised—there’s no growth in a comfort zone.”
Since then, she has covered some of the biggest races, with her most memorable event being the Comrades Marathon—which happened to fall on her late father’s birthday. “I had moments of holding back tears, thinking—he used to do this, and now I’m here, doing it too,” she says.
Her experience has taught her that sports commentators play a crucial role in inspiring diverse audiences. “You have experts watching, casual viewers, and those who know nothing about the sport. My job is to educate, entertain, and inspire all of them.”
Empowering the Next Generation
At the heart of Zintle’s mission is the Sinqe Foundation, named in honour of her father. The foundation is focused on developing young athletes, supporting coaches, and uplifting communities through running. “We go beyond just hosting races. We provide training, introduce kids to clubs, and offer support that extends beyond the track,” she explains. Her work is breaking barriers, particularly for young girls who often face
greater obstacles in sports. “If we can empower one girl, we’re empowering a whole community,” she says.
Zintle has a deep connection with the SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, seeing it as more than just a race—it’s a platform for women’s empowerment. “I love that SPAR doesn’t just celebrate elite runners—it uplifts women making an impact in their communities,” she says. “It’s about recognising and amplifying women’s voices in all spaces.”
This year, she is particularly passionate about the race’s role in addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV). “When women come together and share their stories, they realise they’re not alone. The race provides education, support, and a sense of solidarity.”
She encourages every participant to embrace the experience fully—not just as a race but as a celebration of resilience, empowerment, and community. “Most importantly, be kind to yourself,” she advises. “We uplift others, but we also need to uplift ourselves. Go out there, have fun, and thrive!”
Zintle’s story is one of legacy, growth, and impact. From following in her father’s
footsteps to forging her own path, she is a shining example of what it means to thrive. Whether through running, commentating, or community work, she continues to uplift women and create opportunities for the next generation.
So as you lace up for this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Tshwane, remember—you’re part of something bigger. A movement of women thriving, inspiring, and changing the world—one step at a time.

in a Time of AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere. It’s in our homes, our phones, our children’s classrooms, and the businesses we work in. It helps us do things faster, smarter, and more efficiently. But as powerful and exciting as AI is, it also brings with it some very real questions and concerns. How do we protect our kids in this fastpaced digital world? How do we make sure women aren’t left behind in industries that are changing every day? And how do we keep our communities safe, especially when it comes to the rise in online Gender-Based Violence?
By Marie-Anne teBrake

ImagegeneratedusingAI

Aswe embrace the theme of #Twenty20Thrive, we explore how we can live, grow and thrive in a time of AI.
Powering Up Progress AI in Business
From chatbots answering customer questions to systems that predict what products people will buy next, AI has changed how business is done. Companies love the efficiency and cost-saving benefits. But the downside? Many traditional jobs are disappearing, and women are often the first to be affected, especially in roles like admin and customer service.
The good news is that AI is also creating new career opportunities. Women who reskill and upskill in digital and tech spaces can position themselves at the forefront of this change. Now more than ever, we need inclusive policies, digital training opportunities, and support for women entering these evolving industries.
And it’s not just about coding or technical roles. AI needs creative thinkers, ethical decision-makers, and compassionate communicators—roles where women can and do shine. With mentorship programmes, scholarships, and business accelerators now focusing on women in tech, the tide is turning. This is our time to build the future we want to see.
Growing Up with Algorithms AI and Our Children
Our children are the first true digital natives. AI is part of their everyday lives—from the apps they use for learning to the videos recommended to them on YouTube and TikTok. Personalised learning platforms can help them grasp schoolwork faster, but there’s a flip side. Algorithms are designed to keep them glued to screens. That can affect their concentration, sleep, and even their ability to socialise.
We’re also seeing AI play a growing role in education—from virtual tutors to language-learning bots. While these tools can be incredibly helpful, they must complement, not replace, realworld learning and human connection. Nothing can take the place of a teacher’s encouragement or a friend’s laughter in the playground.
To help our children thrive, we need to guide their digital experiences. This
means setting healthy screen-time limits, encouraging real-world play and friendships, and having open conversations about what they’re watching and why. Teaching kids how to think critically about the content they consume online is as important today as teaching them how to read.
Keeping Kids Safe in a Digital World
Let’s face it: the internet isn’t always a safe place. AI-powered platforms collect data, show targeted ads, and can even expose kids to online predators. It’s scary. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Parents can use tools like parental controls and monitoring apps, but nothing beats being involved and having regular chats about online safety.
Creating a digital safety net starts with awareness. Talk to your children about privacy, consent, and what to do if something online makes them uncomfortable. Use teachable moments to show them how to protect their information, recognise red flags, and understand that not everything they see online is real.
Schools can also play a big role by introducing digital literacy early on. When children learn how to protect themselves online—how to spot a scam, what not to share, and where to go if they feel unsafe—they’re empowered. They can enjoy the benefits of tech without falling victim to its dangers.
Fighting the Digital Dark Side GBV in the Age of AI
Sadly, technology-facilitated GenderBased Violence (GBV) is on the rise. Women and girls are facing new forms of abuse—cyberstalking, deepfakes, and online harassment—often with realworld consequences. AI can help detect and remove harmful content, but tech companies need to act faster and take responsibility for what happens on their platforms.
In South Africa and beyond, organisations are calling for stronger laws and better enforcement to tackle online abuse. But legislation alone isn’t enough. We need a culture of zero tolerance toward digital violence. That means supporting survivors, educating communities, and demanding transparency from the platforms we use every day.
There’s also power in education. Teaching women and girls how to protect themselves online and understand their digital rights can go a long way. From community workshops to national campaigns, we need to create safe online spaces that empower—not endanger—women.
Women in Tech Shaping a Smarter Future
Here’s the thing: if women aren’t involved in building AI, then AI won’t be built for women. Diversity in tech teams matters. Right now, too many AI systems reflect old biases because the people designing them are not representative of the world they’re meant to serve.
By encouraging more girls to study STEM, creating mentorship opportunities, and breaking down the barriers to entry in tech, we can shape an AI future that includes all of us. AI can help women thrive—offering career advice, remote work tools, and access to finance. But only if we make sure it’s inclusive, fair, and built with care.
We also need more women in AI ethics, governance, and policy. As we write the rules for how this powerful technology is used, women’s voices must be front and centre. Representation isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential for building a future that works for everyone.
Moving Forward Together
AI isn’t going away. But that doesn’t mean we have to be afraid of it. Instead, we need to engage with it, learn about it, and guide its growth. Let’s be the generation that sets the tone for how AI can work for us—not against us.
So, how do we thrive in a time of AI? We start by being curious instead of fearful. We ask questions, demand transparency, and speak up when something doesn’t feel right. We support women in tech, champion child safety online, and insist that digital tools respect our humanity.
In the spirit of #Twenty20Thrive, we’re reminded that thriving doesn’t mean avoiding change. It means meeting it headon with courage, curiosity, and community. Together, we can build a future where women, children, and families are not only safe in the digital world but empowered by it. The future is digital—but it can still be deeply human.

Let Them … and

Mel Robbins’ first book, The 5 Second Rule, begins in a place many of us recognize. In debt, trying to raise kids and sustain a healthy marriage/relationship, and struggling to balance everything. The book is a powerful, practical guide for anyone navigating the challenges of motivation, self-doubt, and the ever-present pull of procrastination. With an especially resonant message for women, this book offers a liberating perspective on reclaiming personal agency in the face of societal and emotional pressures. Her story is infinitely relatable and inspiring because her life hacks are proven to work in the lives of ordinary people the world over.
The focus of The “Let Them” Theory is Robbins’ response to asking why she felt she had to force herself to move forward, why she tended to be immobilised through overthinking, procrastination, and doubt. This very
practical book is about taking our power and sense of control back from the things and people we have ceded it to. It helps readers shift focus away from others’ expectations and reactions, and toward a mindset rooted in self-trust and purposeful action. Rather than fighting for control or validation, Robbins encourages readers to “let them” behave as they will, and instead focus on what you need—to “let me” move forward freely and with intention.
As women, we are both socialised and expected to carry the lion’s share of the domestic burden. This is in addition to work pressures, friendships and other personal relationships. We invest heavily in making others happy, comfortable, and safe. Sometimes this comes with the price of diminished control over our own lives. Both The 5 Second Rule and The “Let Them” Theory speak to the silent burdens often carried by women—balancing work, caregiving,
relationships, and social expectations. Robbins doesn’t just acknowledge this imbalance; she offers a path through it. Her approach is not about doing more, but about doing differently—reclaiming power by releasing the need to please, to control, or to be everything to everyone.
While this book draws on research, evidence, various philosophies, religions and spiritual practices, it remains engaging and easy to understand. The use of many relatable stories and anecdotes shows us how to apply them personally. The result is a book that feels both informed and deeply personal. Robbins takes us through the various domains of modern women’s lives and shows us how the application of “let them”, “let me” can potentially empower and liberate us from other’s actions and opinions. In doing so she offers a strategy to regain clarity, confidence, and most importantly, peace.
