All the Answers You Need
You have collected your race number and you’re ready to go! Here are some guidelines to help you get out on the road safely on Sunday, 5 October 2025.
01. Are dogs on a leash allowed?
Sorry, but we recommend leaving your furry friends at home. Large crowds can be overwhelming for them, and we want everyone to stay safe and happy. Let them enjoy a relaxing Sunday nap instead!
02. Can you bring your baby in a pram?
Feel free to bring your little one in a pram to join in the fun! Just remember to start at the back to keep everyone safe and avoid any tripping.
03 . Can we bring cooler bags with drinks to enjoy while our families run?
Unfortunately, you can’t bring your own food, but don’t worry! We’ve got a great selection of food vendors at the venue to keep you satisfied.
04. Can I bring my own braai stand?
Sorry, but outside food isn’t allowed. However, there will be plenty of delicious options from food vendors at the venue!
05. Do kids pay to take part in the race?
If your little one can run on their own then they will need to pay an entrance fee, only children in prams can participate for free.
06. What is the cut-off time for the runners?
All participants will have 120 minutes to cross the finish line.
07. When does the prizegiving start?
Make sure to join us at 10h00 for the prize giving and lucky draw.
08. Are wheelchairs allowed?
Regrettably, no mechanically operated devices, blades, cycles or wheelchairs are permitted to participate in the Challenge without special permission granted by the organisers.
09. Can I swop my race t-shirt for another size?
No, T-shirts will be allocated on a firstcome, first-served basis. Please ensure that you indicate your correct size when you enter, as no exchanges will be allowed.
10. Is there a place for my tog bag?
Tog bag facilities are available at Marks Park Sports Club, please lookout for the signage.
11. Registration is Key
Once you have your Challenge pack (whether purchased in-store or via the SPAR2U app), remember to complete your registration. You can do this by scanning the unique QR code on your Challenge race number, which is included in your Challenge entry pack.
12. Is my entry fee refundable or transferable?
We know life can be unpredictable, but once you’ve entered the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi 5km fun run or 10km Challenge, your entry is final. In line with standard running industry practice, all entry fees are non-refundable and nontransferable. This is clearly noted during registration, where you’ll be asked to confirm your agreement.
For everyone’s safety and fairness, race numbers can’t be passed on to someone else—doing so could lead to disqualification for both you and the runner using your number. Unfortunately, this policy applies in all situations, including injuries, family emergencies, or unexpected life events. We truly appreciate your understanding as we strive to keep the Challenge safe, fair, and joyful for everyone involved.
13. Where does the race start?
The 5km fun run starts on the corner of Hill and Umgeni Roads.
The 10km starts on the corner of Hill and Buffalo Roads.
14. I have won prize money; when will it be paid?
Prize money payments will be done every Friday, after the doping test results. Please check your account carefully before phoning to enquire. Prize money will be paid after:
• Results have been verified.
• Organisers have received all prize winners’ banking details.
• The doping test results have been received.
15. Must I wear the SPAR Women’s Challenge t-shirt?
Although it is not compulsory, SPAR would appreciate it.
16. Why are only women allowed to win prizes while men run the race to support them?
Because it is a women’s Challenge. Yes, men can also take part but they do not qualify for any lucky draws or prizes at the prizegiving. They will however receive a goodie bag and a medal.
17. Will there be medical assistance available at the race?
Yes. There will be a clearly marked medical tent on the field manned by qualified staff.
Emergency number: 063 218 6245
18. Is there water along the route?
There are two refreshment stations on the 10km route and one refreshment station on the 5km fun run route.

There is ample parking available in the designated parking areas. Please look out for the official SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi parking officers who will be wearing bright yellow SPAR bibs. You should only follow directions from our officials and not from any other parking guard in order to park in one of our safe designated areas.

20. How do I show off my time?
Race results will be available on the website: results.finishtime.co.za
21. Who benefits from this year’s Challenge?
This year’s race charities are Reach for Recovery, Komani, and Leafline. So, you will be helping young girls and women thrive in life.
Now it’s over to you, come along, have fun, and enjoy the Challenge with thousands of other women on 5 October 2025 at Marks Park Sports Club!
In South Africa, thousands of young girls miss school every month simply because they do not have access to menstrual products. This injustice has far-reaching consequences, affecting not only education, but also dignity, health, and future opportunities. In response to this silent crisis, SPAR has launched a bold and unwavering campaign to End Period Poverty by 2030. More than just a slogan, but an ongoing commitment to uplift, empower, and restore the rights of women and girls across the country.
“As a brand that is deeply rooted in communities, we understand the importance of supporting the health and dignity of women and girls,” says Mpudi Maubane, SPAR’s National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager. “Period poverty is a barrier we are committed to dismantling. Our initiative is not just about providing products, but about raising awareness to break down the stigmas attached to this topic and restoring confidence by creating real sustainable change.”
SPAR’s End Period Poverty campaign aims to ensure that no girl is forced to miss out on their education, sports activities or feel stigmatised due to a lack of menstrual products. Through this journey, SPAR collaborates with key partners, relies on the generosity of customers and communities, and is committed to providing affordable sanitary pads for only R6,00 a packet. Beyond affordability, the campaign is focused on distributing menstrual health products and investing in long-term, ecofriendly solutions.
In stores nationwide, SPAR customers are encouraged to support the campaign through the purchase of Petals sanitary pads — an affordable and quality option that also makes a difference. For every pack sold, a portion goes towards providing sanitary towels to girls in need. This simple act of purchasing Petals helps support a supply chain of dignity and care.
Petals, SPAR’s own-brand sanitary product, offers consumers a chance to make a direct impact. By choosing Petals, shoppers can contribute to a larger movement that supports the education and self-esteem of girls across South Africa. The initiative demonstrates how everyday consumer choices can have powerful social consequences.
In addition to providing disposable products, SPAR is championing sustainable and reusable menstrual solutions — both to address environmental concerns and to offer long-term affordability to those in need. Two key beneficiaries of this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi are pioneering such solutions, namely Leafline Sanitary Towels and Komani.
KOMANI: COMMUNITY-LED
Another key beneficiary of the 2025 SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi is Komani, an organisation dedicated to the empowerment of women through education, skills development, and access to menstrual health solutions. Komani provides reusable sanitary
pad kits, along with comprehensive menstrual education programmes that help break the stigma and silence around menstruation.
With a focus on community engagement and capacity-building, Komani’s work assists in creating generational change. Young women not only receive the tools they need, but also become advocates and educators in their own communities, creating a ripple effect of empowerment.
“Partnering with Komani is essential to our End Period Poverty strategy,” adds Mpudi. “Their grassroots work aligns with our mission to create long-term, community-rooted impact.”
Leafline Sanitary Towels are a standout example of innovation and sustainability. Made using the inner fibre of the Cayenne pineapple leaf — stronger than cotton and highly absorbent — these sanitary towels can last for up to two years with proper care.
Comfortable, discreet, and easy to use, Leafline pads are designed to offer reliable protection while remaining environmentally conscious. The pads feature foldable wings that wrap
securely around underwear and fasten comfortably in place. When not in use, the towel folds into a compact pouch that fits neatly into a handbag or schoolbag.
Cleaning is simple: Soiled items are rinsed and washed with Sunlight soap in cold water. Outdoor drying is recommended to extend the life of the product, sunlight contains a natural bleach, which helps to remove stains. The use of stylish Shwe Shwe fabric ensures that the item appears as another piece of laundry when hung on the line.
“Leafline is more than a product — it’s a movement,” says Mpudi. “By supporting these types of innovations, we are equipping girls with the tools they need to stay in school and reclaim their confidence.”
The SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi has long been more than just a race — it’s a platform for empowerment, solidarity, and change. This year, proceeds from the race will be used to support both Leafline and Komani, directly contributing to their missions of menstrual health and education.
Participants in the race will not only be running for fitness or fun, but also for the dignity and future of thousands of girls across South Africa. Donations and proceeds will help ensure that these sustainable solutions reach those who need them most, turning every step taken into a stride towards change.
Ending period poverty is not a one-time project — it’s a sustained and collective effort. SPAR invites all South Africans to join the movement. By choosing Petals sanitary products, participating in the SPAR Women’s Challenge, and supporting sustainable initiatives like Leafline and Komani, you can help rewrite the future for women and girls.
“Together, we are making a difference — one product, one girl, one community at a time,” concludes Mpudi. “Because every girl deserves the right to education, dignity, and a future unbound by her period.”

Breast cancer is more than a diagnosis — it’s a journey through fear, courage, and transformation. For many women across Jozi and South Africa, it begins with uncertainty but often leads to resilience, community, and renewed purpose. This year, the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi celebrates those who not only survive breast cancer, but thrive beyond it — reflecting the spirit of #Twenty20Thrive and the heartbeat of My Jozi, My SPAR.
With 1 in 27 South African women likely to face breast cancer in their lifetime, early detection remains crucial. Yet access to screening and education is still limited in many communities. In these areas, advocacy organisations step in to bridge the gap — offering not only vital health services, but hope. To thrive through cancer is to embrace life on the other side of treatment. It’s choosing to show up — bald, brave, and healing. It’s running a 5km with chemo curls or holding a neighbour’s hand through chemo. It’s
owning your scars and sharing your story so others can find strength.
Thriving doesn’t mean going back to who you were — it means becoming someone stronger, someone wiser. For a young woman studying through treatment, or a mother juggling school runs and doctor’s visits, thriving is deeply personal.
Across Jozi, survivors are doing just that. Through awareness walks, fitness classes, and social campaigns, they are lifting others as they rise. Events like the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi bring these women — and their families, friends, and allies — together. Every step taken in pink ribbons is a show of unity, courage, and community.
SPAR stores across the city also play a key role — sponsoring runners, supporting local awareness events, and stocking charity-linked products that support breast cancer initiatives. This is what My Jozi, My SPAR is all about: communities standing strong together.
Thriving doesn’t require perfection — just presence. For every woman fighting today, and for every survivor still walking tall, #Twenty20Thrive is a rallying cry to live with courage and purpose.
Whether you’re running this Challenge for yourself, your sister, or someone you’ve lost — every stride is proof: we don’t just survive cancer, we thrive through it.
For over 50 years, Reach for Recovery has supported breast cancer patients through their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Founded by survivors, for survivors, this volunteer-led organisation offers emotional support and practical help to women facing the fear and isolation that often comes with breast cancer.
One of its flagship initiatives is the Daisy Wheel Project, which distributes prosthetic breast forms free of charge to women who have undergone mastectomies, but cannot afford reconstructive surgery. Another is their peer support programme, where trained volunteers visit patients in hospitals and offer one-on-one encouragement from someone who has “been there”.

In a country where healthcare access remains unequal, PinkDrive NPC shines as a mobile lifeline. Since 2009, this South African nonprofit has brought critical cancer screening and education directly to underserved communities, ensuring that thousands — especially women — receive vital breast, cervical, and prostate health services.
With the motto “Early detection can prolong lives”, PinkDrive’s bright pink trucks travel across all nine provinces, offering clinical exams, mammograms, and cancer education where it’s needed most. Their impact goes beyond tests — each visit empowers people through awareness, self-examination techniques, and referrals for further care.
Active in national campaigns like Breast Cancer Awareness Month and World Cancer Day, PinkDrive has become a symbol of resilience and community spirit. Through partnerships with government and the private sector, they continue to bridge the gap in healthcare — driving not only access, but hope and dignity as well.

The name ILoveBoobies was chosen to raise an eyebrow and spark conversations around breast health, because talking about it shouldn’t be awkward. Since 2017, this South African non-profit has been providing free mobile breast screenings to women in underserved communities who face barriers to early detection.
By partnering with private radiologists and pathologists, ILoveBoobies ensures a fast and efficient diagnostic process, often cutting down the waiting time from years to under a month. The earlier the diagnosis, the easier the treatment path and the higher the rate of survival. To date, over 12 000 women have received free clinical breast examinations, and more than 15 million South Africans have been reached through digital education and awareness campaigns.
Movement plays a key role in ILoveBoobies’ mission. Regular physical activity helps reduce the risk of breast cancer, and the organisation channels this into real-world impact by partnering with major sporting events and initiatives. Each October, the Imagine Challenge invites South Africans to move with purpose— running, riding, swimming, or walking to raise funds that directly support free screenings. From limited-edition, cool, active merch to race entries, every action taken helps another woman access life-saving care.
Because when you move — you’re not only doing it for yourself, you’re doing it for her too.
Early detection saves lives. Let’s move: www.iloveboobies.co.za
At the core of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi are the passionate ambassadors and dedicated organisers who embody what it means to #Twenty20Thrive. These champions lead with heart, uplift their communities, and inspire others to rise — no matter where they’re planted. Whether they’re lacing up for the Challenge, mobilising support behind the scenes, or using their platforms to spark change, they remind us that thriving looks different for everyone — and that’s exactly the beauty of it. Here’s to the warriors, cheerleaders, and changemakers behind the magic.
Q: What’s your favourite moment on Challenge Day?
Q: What’s your proudest ‘I didn’t give up’ moment?
A: My proudest ‘I didn’t give up’ moment was hearing the word ‘cancer’ and choosing to fight — for my life, for my son, and for the woman I was still becoming. I was a young mother with an 11-monthold baby, terrified but determined. Thirteen years later, I’m still here — in full remission — and I’ve turned that pain into purpose through the Yolanda Bukani Foundation, where I raise awareness and walk alongside others on their journey. To me, thriving means rising from what was meant to break you and using your story to light the way for others.
A: It honestly fills my heart. There’s something so powerful about standing at the start line surrounded by women of all ages, shapes, and stories – all showing up for themselves and each other. Every time I participate in something like this, I’m reminded why I love what I do. It’s emotional and it’s energising at the same time. For me, the SPAR Women’s Challenge is a reminder that we are stronger together – and that every step is a celebration of how far we’ve come.
Q: What does ‘thriving’ mean to you in this season of your life?
A: I’m a runner, I’m a mother, I’m a teacher and yes, I’m still a runner. I thrive on coffee, chaos and carboloading. I can mark papers, pack lunchboxes and squeeze in a run, all before 7h00.
Q: Why is it important to you to support women-led causes?
A: I support women-led causes because women understand women. We know the silent cries, the sacrifices, and the pressure to be everything to everyone. We understand what it means to pour from an empty cup and still show up with strength. That’s why when a woman rises, she brings others with her. I support women by training, equipping, and empowering them — whether it’s learning self-defence, starting a business, or just believing they’re worth more. I give them tools, knowledge, and a safe space to grow. Behind every woman-led cause is a story, a struggle, and a deep desire to make life better, not just for herself, but for everyone she loves. And that’s worth backing every time.
Q: What’s one thing every woman should hear today?
A: Just because you live in a man’s world, doesn’t mean you can’t be a woman in it!
Q: What mindshift has helped you thrive recently?
A: If you can’t control it, don’t worry about it.
Q: What does ‘thriving’ mean to you in this season of your life?
A: It means confidently taking on new challenges without putting myself under unnecessary pressure. I will continue to enjoy life, back my choices, look beyond the now, and positively impact others’ lives as much as I can.
Sponsorship & Events Controller
Q: What’s one small way people can help others to thrive?
A: Be kind. Everyone is busy navigating their own season of life — our stories are different, but our struggles are real. Listen attentively, show understanding, and help where you can. This kind of kindness eases stress, fosters healing, and empowers someone to grow, flourish and thrive in their own way.
Inland Promotions & Advertising Manager
Q: How are you using your voice to create change?
A: “Your life is your message to the world. Make sure it’s inspiring.” –Unknown.
I’m using my voice to remind people they matter – loudly, creatively, and unapologetically. Whether it’s in a boardroom, in a social circle, or through a campaign, I speak to shift mindsets, to ignite belief, and to hold space for stories that deserve to be heard, and that anything is possible with purpose and passion running through your blood. I’ve learnt that change doesn’t always start with a microphone; sometimes it starts with the courage to say the honest thing in a quiet room. My voice isn’t for volume – it’s for impact, empathy, postive change and most importantly to inspire!
Q: What does ‘thriving’ mean to you in this season of your life?
A: If you’d asked me this question a year ago, my response would’ve probably been very self-serving, but now, I see it differently. For a firsttime mom-to-be, thriving means feeling supported, empowered, and connected. The SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi is more than just an event — it’s a space that encourages wellness, community, and belonging. It helps moms stay active, uplifted, and reminded that they’re not alone. It’s about rising together and celebrating every stage of womanhood.
Sponsorship Controller
Q: What’s one thing every woman should hear today?
A: I’d say to all women, you are strong, resilient and capable of overcoming any challenge.
Divisional Marketing Executive
Q: What does it mean to you to be part of something bigger, like the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi?
A: Being part of something bigger — like the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi — means contributing to a shared purpose that goes beyond individual goals. It’s about community and empowerment. The SPAR Women’s Challenge is more than just a run — it’s a celebration of empowerment, unity, and impact. Women from all walks of life come together to honour strength, health, and resilience, creating a shared energy that fosters belonging. Every step taken supports meaningful causes, promotes wellness and women’s rights, and inspires others to thrive. Whether walking, jogging, or racing, your presence becomes a powerful reminder that we thrive together. It’s more than a race — it’s a movement. Being part of that is both humbling and uplifting.
Because every strong finish starts with a single step…
Whether you’re lacing up your trainers for the very first time or gearing up to beat your personal best, the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi 2025 is your invitation to rise, show up, and thrive — exactly as you are. This year’s theme, #Twenty20Thrive, is about turning intention into action, choosing yourself, and growing strong in every season of life.
Tohelp you along that journey is someone who embodies what it means to thrive in motion: Monique Lopes, better known to her thousands of online followers as @monique.fit. But before she was a fitness coach or social media motivator, Monique was just a little girl with big energy and even bigger dreams.
She found her first taste of purpose through karate, starting at the age of six. That early passion for movement took her all the way to the global stage, where she became a five-time karate world champion representing South Africa. Monique’s story didn’t end with medals and podiums; it evolved — as many women’s stories do — with reinvention, resilience, and learning to thrive through transition.
When her plans to study medicine didn’t pan out, she pivoted to Human Movement Science at the University of Pretoria. Along the way, she discovered a love for CrossFit and strength training, eventually carving out a space in the world of bodybuilding, where she claimed multiple South African titles. Yet, amid the sweat and strategy, something bigger was brewing; a calling to help other women find their power through fitness.
“Fitness gave me the foundation, but coaching gave me purpose,” she says. “I started sharing my workouts online
and realised that I wasn’t just posting exercises — I was building connection, confidence, and community.”
Today, Monique uses her platform to do more than count reps — she champions self-belief. Her bubbly, down-to-earth style has made her a relatable force for women across the country. Whether she’s sharing a fullbody workout, dancing in silly outfits, or dropping a truth bomb about body image, Monique’s message is always clear — you are worthy, powerful, and enough.
That’s exactly why SPAR partnered with her for this year’s Challenge. She gets it. She gets the self-doubt. The starts and restarts, and the days when the couch feels more inviting than the road. She also knows the joy of pushing through, showing up, and surprising yourself.
Her exclusive 4-week beginner training plan — designed just for SPAR Women’s Challenge participants — meets you where you are and helps you build consistency, strength, and self-trust. Because #Twenty20Thrive isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress, purpose, and presence.
“You don’t have to be the fastest,” Monique says. “What matters is that you show up for yourself — and that’s where the magic begins.”

In a country where athletic greatness often begins on uneven pavements and dusty tracks, the SPAR Grand Prix has become more than a race series — it is a springboard for women’s dreams. For nearly two decades, SPAR has not only supported, but significantly reshaped the landscape of women’s road running in South Africa. From developing future Olympians to supporting athletes through the toughest times — including the global COVID-19 pandemic — SPAR has cemented its legacy as a champion of female athletes.
Now in its 2025 season, the SPAR Grand Prix is led by none other than Glenrose Xaba, one of South Africa’s most consistent and accomplished runners. With Ethiopian defending champion Tadu Nare no longer in the competition, Glenrose is widely tipped to take the overall crown again.
“Running in the SPAR Grand Prix series has changed my life,” says Glenrose. “It’s more than just winning races — it’s about growing in confidence, gaining financial independence, and knowing you are supported as a woman in a maledominated space. SPAR has created a platform where we don’t just compete — we thrive.”
Launched in 2007, the SPAR Grand Prix was the first womenonly road running series of its kind in South Africa. Its mission was simple; create opportunities for women to race competitively, earn prize money, and gain exposure in a supportive, professional environment. The format has since become iconic — fast-paced 10km races across multiple cities, including Cape Town, Tshwane, Durban, Gqeberha, and Johannesburg.
Over the years, it has nurtured some
of South Africa’s most revered athletes. Olympians like Gerda Steyn, Cian Oldknow, Lebo Phalula, René Kalmer, Christine Kalmer, and Irvette van Zyl all trace part of their professional success back to the Grand Prix series. Beyond medals, the impact has been personal and life changing. One of the Phalula sisters used her Grand Prix prize money to buy a house, the other, a car that is still used to this day — an example of the series’ ability to translate victories into tangible empowerment.
“SPAR has not only invested in sport — they’ve invested in women,” says Glenrose. “It’s hard to explain what that kind of support does for an athlete. It makes you believe in your potential.”
The COVID-19 pandemic brought much of the world to a standstill, and South African sport was no exception. But where others paused, SPAR pressed on. Recognising the immense financial strain athletes were under, SPAR continued with the Grand Prix in a modified format, at the request of Athletics South Africa (ASA) and government authorities. It became the only national athletics sponsorship that remained fully active throughout lockdowns.
“Supporting our athletes during COVID was not even a question for us,” says Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager at SPAR. “These women rely on racing as their livelihood. We had to find a way to keep the series alive — not just to maintain its legacy, but to protect the athletes who form its heart.”
Through closed events, restricted fields, and broadcast-only races, SPAR ensured that runners could still earn prize money, maintain training goals, and continue building their careers during an otherwise bleak time for sport.
“The resilience our athletes showed during that time was incredible,” Mpudi adds. “And it was an honour for SPAR to stand by them when they needed us most.”
While the series champions local heroes, it has also attracted elite international competition. Tadu Nare of Ethiopia, who stormed to dominance in recent years, brought a fierce international edge to the local field. Her presence, and now absence, has opened the 2025 series in exciting ways.
“Racing against Tadu made us all better,” says Glenrose. “She pushed the pace, raised the bar. But now it’s our
turn — and I’m hungry for this title.”
For athletes like Glenrose, the series represents both a proving ground and a place of pride. Winning races means more than a gold medal — it comes with a substantial purse and national recognition. The Grand Prix winner earns R200 000, with additional prize money for each leg, plus incentive bonuses for record times and consistent performance.
“It’s not just about being the best in one race,” explains Mpudi. “We reward consistency, commitment, and excellence across the entire season. That’s what builds champions.”
One of the most underappreciated aspects of the SPAR Grand Prix is its inclusivity. The series welcomes women from all walks of life — from elite international runners to up-and-coming juniors and dedicated club runners. Its women-only format ensures a safe, empowering space where competition can thrive without intimidation.
“In a sport historically dominated by men, women need a space to shine. And SPAR has made sure we have that,” Glenrose notes.
The impact extends beyond the finish line. SPAR continues to invest
in grassroots development, with partnerships across schools, clubs, and local races — nurturing the next generation of runners.
“We want to make sure that young girls see the road ahead — and know that it’s one worth running,” says Mpudi. “We are not just hosting races. We are changing narratives. We are creating futures.”
As the 2025 SPAR Grand Prix unfolds, all eyes are on Glenrose. But in truth, the spotlight belongs to every woman who has laced up a pair of running shoes and chased a dream across a SPAR finish line. It belongs to the single mother earning prize money to support her child. To the township athlete buying a first car. To the schoolgirl watching from the sidelines, believing she could be next.
In a world where women’s sport still fights for airtime and support, SPAR has proven what long-term investment, consistency, and heart can do.
“There’s no finish line to this journey,” Mpudi concludes. “As long as there are women with the will to run, we’ll be here — backing them every step of the way.”
Elevate Your Every Step with HOKA
Alright, ladies – let’s talk about that electric moment when you’re out running; the Jozi breeze hits just right, and it feels like your legs could carry you all the way to your dreams. That’s the magic we’re chasing in 2025. This year, we’re thriving, we’re flying, and we’re doing it in style – with HOKA. Whether you’re tackling your first 5km or dashing between work and wellness, HOKA is here to elevate your every stride. These aren’t just shoes — they’re your new secret weapon.
HOKA hit the ground running in 2009 with one bold mission; max cushioning for max joy. The goal was a shoe that feels like you’re flying — even on those downhill moments of life and the road. So they designed a shoe with super-thick midsoles that absorb impact and feel like you’re running on clouds. So, your body feels better, your recovery is faster, and running becomes something you actually look forward to.
The result? Ridiculously comfortable midsoles, a smooth-as-butter stride, and the kind of support that keeps you coming back for more. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or a great flat white, HOKA is built for you.
(and Why You Will Too)
1. Marshmallow-soft cushioning
Extra-thick soles absorb impact and protect your joints — perfect for long runs, recovery days, or just a little extra TLC.
2. That rolling feeling
HOKA’s Meta-Rocker tech, where the soles are shaped with a curve, gives your stride a smooth, forward roll. Every step feels like momentum.
3. Hug-your-feet fit
You don’t perch on top of a HOKA — your feet are cradled in them. It’s like a cosy bucket seat for your feet while you run. It keeps you feeling secure and supported without bulky add-ons.
4. Lightweight love
All the cushion, none of the bulk. Light as a feather, tough as nails.
HOKA gets that no two feet — or lives — are the same. That’s why they’re dialled in on:
1. Multiple widths and tailored fits
Feet come in all shapes and sizes. HOKA offers multiple widths and sizes so you can find your perfect match — no rubbing, no pinching.
2. Designs tuned to women’s biomechanics
Many women’s versions are tweaked slightly for their specific needs, like narrower heels or softer cushioning where it counts.
3. Support for women’s running communities
HOKA partners with women’s running communities and events, helping build spaces where all women feel welcome, strong, and supported — no matter their pace.
4. Sponsorship of boundary-breaking female athletes
HOKA sponsors truly inspiring women who are thriving in everything from marathons to ultra-distance races –total motivation to keep pushing your limits.
In a world where gear often forgets women, HOKA remembers. This is footwear that fits, supports, and celebrates you.
Women can’t get enough of HOKA — and it’s easy to see why. These shoes deliver all-day comfort, whether you’re running long distances or simply dashing through daily errands, with plush cushioning that keeps sore soles and aching arches at bay. Designed for fewer injuries and faster recovery, they offer the kind of support that feels like a soft landing with every step. HOKAs also bring confidence with every stride — stable, smooth, and so comfortable, you can focus on your run, not your shoes. Best of all, they’re as stylish as they are functional, with eye-catching colours and designs that work just as well on the trail as they do at brunch. Built to go the distance, HOKAs are a smart investment for women who move — and thrive — every day.

Step inside SPAR Birchgate and you’ll feel it instantly — the warmth of a store that’s more than a grocery stop. It’s a heartbeat in the heart of Jozi, where customers are remembered by name, community ties are treasured, and one family’s passion for retail runs deeper than shelves and specials. This is where Elma du Plessis, alongside her brother, Leon Kruger; sister-inlaw, Diane Kruger; and their father, Kallie Kruger, thrives — not only in business, but in life.
Their story is part of something bigger. It’s wrapped into the golden thread of My Jozi, My SPAR; a celebration of the power of community and the people who make Jozi extraordinary. This year, with the #Twenty20Thrive theme shining bright, Elma’s journey proves that you can truly bloom where you’re planted — even in the fast-paced world of retail.
Elma’s relationship with SPAR began long before she was behind the counter. “My father acquired his first SPAR in 1995,” she recalls, “and my brother and I grew up in retail, working in-store during school holidays.” Still, joining the family business wasn’t automatic — they both took time to study and explore careers outside retail before eventually finding their way back to what they loved most; people.
Through every challenge and learning curve, Elma and the Kruger family have grown stronger. “We are very different people,” Elma laughs, “but each of us brings unique strengths,
and we’ve become a team I would never trade for the world.”
That same family spirit spills over into the culture at SPAR Birchgate. “No one is better than the other,” Elma says. “We support and guide one another. Our door is always open, and there is always an ear to listen.” The store is a microcosm of Jozi itself — diverse, dynamic, and deeply human.
This sense of belonging also extends to their customers. “We’ve built such strong relationships with our community that our customers aren’t just numbers,” says Elma. “They’re familiar faces. We know their names. We’ve grown together.”
A core part of that community connection is SPAR Birchgate’s passionate involvement in the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi. For Elma, the event is more than a race — it’s a movement. “It’s about empowering
women in our families and communities,” she says. “It’s a day for women of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels to come together and know we all matter. We’re stronger together.”
One of her standout memories? The 2022 #IRise virtual challenge. “We hosted our own event at my parents’ retirement estate,” she says with a smile. “We had a SPAR gazebo, water stations, and almost 60 elderly participants — including my 83-year-old gran!” It was such a hit they repeated it the following year. It’s clear: at Birchgate, the Challenge isn’t just supported — it’s lived.
Running a store is no small feat, and doing it as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry can be even tougher, but for Elma, thriving means facing the storm — and choosing joy anyway.
“What fills my heart is knowing that through all the challenges, our family and business always support each other,” she reflects. “We do business and life based on honesty, humility, respect, and love.” Her proudest role? “Being able to model this way of life to my daughter.”
So how does she do it all? “I start my day with a 5h00 CrossFit class, unwind with a hot bath, and spend time with friends and family. We wear many hats as women — caretakers, employers, daughters, mothers — but we can’t pour
from an empty cup. When we prioritise our mental and physical health, it flows into everything else.”
To young women thinking of entering the retail world or launching their own businesses, Elma offers this: “It’s never too late. Listen to your inner voice, and when you find that one thing that makes you feel alive — go for it!”
This year’s theme, #Twenty20Thrive, resonates deeply with Elma. “Thriving is showing up each day — for ourselves and for each other. It’s doing what makes your heart smile, letting go of what you can’t control, and not taking anything personally.”
At SPAR Birchgate, thriving isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. It’s about building a store — and a life — that reflects the community it serves.
One of the most beautiful parts of Elma’s story is how SPAR Birchgate gives back. The store features a community box where customers drop their receipts, and a portion of the total gets donated to local schools and churches.
That’s only the start. They support their local SPCA with ongoing
campaigns and contribute to the Bata Toughees school shoe drive every year. Their daily delivery service to the nearby retirement home is a lifeline for elderly customers who still prefer to phone in their orders — and enjoy a friendly chat. These small acts of kindness add up. They’re not flashy, but they’re powerful, and they show what SPAR’s about — uplifting, caring, thriving.
From the early morning stock checks to heartfelt chats at the till, Elma is proof that retail can be a calling — and that community can be a compass. SPAR Birchgate isn’t only a store; it’s a space where lives intersect, dreams are supported, and every person matters.
Thriving isn’t only about rising above. It’s about reaching out. One trolley, one smile, one small act at a time.
In the heart of Hammarsdale, a determined teenager once laced up her sneakers for a school netball practice — not knowing that this moment would be the start of something extraordinary. Bongi Msomi, now a celebrated SPAR Proteas captain, coach, mentor, and community champion, didn’t begin her sporting journey at an elite academy or fancy club. She began with heart, hustle, and an unwavering commitment to growth. Today, she continues to thrive where she’s planted, inspiring women across the country to do the same.
Unlike many professional athletes, Bongi didn’t follow a traditional path into sport. “I started playing netball quite late,” she says, recalling that first high school practice. “But I fell in love with the game and gave it everything I had.”
It was her high school teacher, Sithembiso Mncwabe, who recognised her potential. From that point on, community and opportunity became the foundation of her rise. “I am a product of a community that showed up and excelled,” Bongi reflects. “From SPAR to PUMA, and every supporter in between, I stand on the shoulders of many.”
From the township courts of KwaZulu-Natal to over 171 international caps, Bongi has led the SPAR Proteas through some of their most iconic moments. “Captaining the national team during our most successful years was a privilege,” she says. “Leadership is about consistency, values, and staying grounded — on and off the court.”
Her stints playing for clubs in England and Australia further shaped her, expanding her worldview and teaching her how sport can be a tool for social change. “Those experiences taught me adaptability, resilience, and the importance of giving back,” she says.
Post-retirement, many athletes fade into the background. Not Bongi. Instead, she embraced the next chapter with purpose and passion.
Now the head coach of the University of Johannesburg Netball team and founder of the Bongi Msomi Legacy Project, as well as head coach for the U/21A Johannesburg Netball Association team and assistant coach for the Gauteng Golden Fireballs team, she channels her experience into empowering others. “Coaching is not just about winning games. It’s about mentoring, creating opportunities, and building the next generation of leaders.”
Through her Legacy Project, Bongi works with athletes across all levels — from grassroots to high-performance — focusing on character-building, education, and access. “It’s my turn
to give opportunities as best as I can. Through the support I received as a player, I’ve built something that can impact others long after I’m gone.”
Bongi describes 2025 as a season of “transition” — a purposeful pivot towards deeper impact. “Thriving to me now means confidently taking on new challenges without unnecessary pressure,” she explains. “It’s about backing my choices, continuing to enjoy life, and positively impacting others.”
Despite her packed schedule, she remains grounded in gratitude. “God keeps me going, and my support system is what I prayed for — honest, kind people who want the best for me. That makes everything easier.”
For Bongi, moving from player to coach has meant embracing new lessons in leadership. “Being led is very different from leading others,” she laughs. “You realise the responsibility
you carry — not just for performance, but for people’s growth.”
She believes in leading with heart and holding space for others to thrive. “My coaching philosophy is simple; meet people where they are, then walk with them towards where they can go. Every player is different. Every journey matters.”
And when tough days hit? She leans into faith, family, and perspective. “I am an annoyingly positive person,” she jokes. “But I’ve been through enough to know that challenges are stepping
stones. I’ve never given up — and I’m really proud of that.”
Bongi lights up when talking about the SPAR Women’s Challenge. “It’s such a feel-good day. I get to be with my family, my colleagues, my athletes — all in one place, celebrating wellness and community.”
She uses Challenge Day as a teambuilding opportunity and a moment to reset. “Crossing that finish line
Unleash your powers, define your own version of winning, and continue to thrive.
surrounded by joy and togetherness… that’s my favourite part. It reminds me that I’ve done something good today.”
She’s also passionate about supporting women-led causes and sees the Challenge as part of a broader movement. “Women work so hard and deserve support. By showing up, I hope to encourage others to do the same.”
Bongi lives the truth that empowered women empower others. “Being a woman is a blessing,” she says. “Unleash your powers, define your own version of winning, and continue to thrive.”
Through her coaching, mentorship, and voice, she’s changing lives — one athlete at a time. “It’s about giving people access. Helping them be seen. Creating empowered athletes who will thrive beyond the court.”
Whether she’s leading a varsity team, mentoring young girls through her project, or crossing the finish line at the SPAR Women’s Challenge, one thing is certain; Bongi Msomi is far from done. She is thriving — and helping South Africa do the same.
When Nicole Koopman launched Keychain SA, it wasn’t just another business venture — it was an act of obedience, a response to a calling, and a spark that ignited a nationwide movement for women’s safety and empowerment. What began as a content series to document how to start a business from scratch quickly transformed into something far more personal — and far more powerful.
The inspiration struck when Nicole, then a new mom, heard a gutwrenching story about a girl being kidnapped. The emotional weight of that moment pushed her to post a raw TikTok video that unexpectedly went viral. Thousands of women resonated. They weren’t only engaging, they were relating. “That video planted a seed that eventually became my purpose,” Nicole says.
Despite leaving behind a profitable business in another industry, she knew she was being called to something greater. “When you see a problem and you’re equipped to solve it, you don’t ignore it,” she says. “I believe that God hears the cries of His daughters, and sometimes, He sends people willing to act.”
With more than 15 years’ experience in business strategy, Nicole had the practical knowledge to launch a brand
— but what she lacked in resources, she made up for in tenacity. She wore every hat in the business; order packer, content creator, administrative assistant, and customer service. No team. No funding. No excuses.
“I worked alone and sacrificed sleep, weekends, and comfort. But I believe in resourcefulness. I used AI, video editors, Shopify and free platforms to automate, scale, and serve.” Her message to other aspiring entrepreneurs is direct: “Excuses won’t get you far, but action will.”
Innovation remains the heartbeat of Keychain SA. From interactive product quizzes to WhatsApp support and reseller programmes, Nicole has built a lean, scalable business that stretches across borders — all while centring the needs of women.
Keychain SA’s self-defence kits are not gimmicks or trendy accessories
— they’re functional, compact, and potentially life-saving. Each kit includes tools like pepper spray, alarms, kubatons, and glass breakers, but Nicole is quick to point out: “Their true power lies in education.”
From virtual sessions to in-person workshops and corporate wellness days, Nicole’s goal is to equip women with more than tools — she wants to give them skill, confidence, and a mindset shift. “Tools are only as good as your ability to use them,” she says.
She also tackles widespread misconceptions head-on. “People think these tools are illegal or too pretty to work. That’s the point — they’re discreet for a reason. Safety is not about intimidation, it’s about preparation.”
Nicole’s passion for women’s safety isn’t abstract. It’s deeply rooted in both personal conviction and generational purpose. “I’m not afraid — I’m angry,” she says. “Angry that women live in fear and that safety is a luxury.”
Her work has brought peace of mind not only to individuals, but to entire families. “My partner can’t always be there to walk me to the shops, but he sleeps better knowing I’m trained and not defenceless.”
There’s also a legacy in her lineage. Nicole recently discovered she’s related to Sophia Williams-De Bruyn — one of the four women who led the historic 1956 Women’s March in South Africa. “When we met, she asked me why I do what I do — and I realised it’s in my blood.”
Nicole’s workshops are transformative. “The shift is instant. Women arrive uncertain and leave empowered,” she says. Many go on to teach their daughters, friends, and even test moves with their partners in what becomes a bonding moment.
What’s more, the men in their lives often become supportive allies. “Fathers, husbands, and brothers attend or observe the sessions with pride. Confidence becomes contagious.”
Through her corporate training days, school visits, and family bookings, Nicole is expanding her reach and calling on others to help. “Support
the ‘Back a Buddy’ campaign. Donate venue space. Book workshops. Every connection counts.”
When asked what thriving means to her, Nicole’s answer is grounded in faith and action: “It’s when women realise they’re strong and that their safety matters. It’s giving hope and fighting back. Thriving is serving with no expectation, giving with purpose, and building with faith.”
It’s not an easy journey. The emotional toll is real, and the logistical grind is constant. But Nicole’s resilience is rooted in prayer, physical training, and a support system anchored in faith. “Romans 12:12 keeps me going: ‘Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.’”
Her business and her advocacy aren’t separate. They’re intertwined. “My business fuels my advocacy, and my advocacy gives my business purpose. My goal is to leave every person better than I found them.”
Nicole has bold plans for the future. She wants Keychain SA to train over 30 000 women, expand into all nine provinces, and launch a global digital platform. “We’re already supplying Namibia and Botswana. We’ll be known not just for selling tools, but for starting a movement.”
One of her deepest desires is to make self-defence education part of the
school system. “Teach boys respect. Teach girls to fight back. One pilot school is all I need to start.”
And when asked about her legacy, Nicole’s answer is simple yet profound: “Hope. Strength. Faith. That people saw Jesus in me. That women said: ‘Because of her, I didn’t give up.’”
Nicole Koopman is more than an entrepreneur. She’s a warrior, a woman of faith, and a beacon of hope for a nation tired of fear. Her work reminds us all that safety is not a privilege — it’s a right — and with the right tools, training, and belief, every woman has the power to thrive.

The Birmingham is not only a cocktail bar. It’s a sharp-edged, velvetlined, vintage-glam haven for women who’ve had enough of unsafe spaces, unsolicited advances, and being overlooked. Founder Rachel, who came up through the nightlife and restaurant scene, saw firsthand how toxic things could become — especially for women staffers and guests.
So, she built something different. Inspired by Peaky Blinders and anchored by an antique auction-find bar, The Birmingham combines old-school jazz elegance with a fierce sense of
female protection. Her staff? All women. Her energy? All heart.
Here, you can sip a beautifully made martini knowing your handbag is safe, your drink is watched, and your waitron gets it — because she’s you. The venue hosts everything from date nights to girls’ nights, and it’s quickly become a cult favourite among locals and creatives alike.
Rachel doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but she shows up every day, raw and real, asking how she can build better. And her space is proof that when women build for women, magic happens.

Walk into any Goddess Café location and you’ll be wrapped in a warm blush glow — walls, cakes, menus, and even the signature Spanish lattes radiate pink energy, but beneath the Instagrammable aesthetic lies a business founded on grit, growth, and sisterhood. After serving as CMO for Roman’s Pizza for 18 years and owning three franchises of her own, Bonnie saw an opportunity to build something new. With her sister, Kerry — a meticulous financial planner with a passion for precision — they acquired Goddess Café and turned it into Jozi’s favourite floral dream.
With five locations and the wildly successful bakery brand Miss Cake under their belt, the duo is crafting a brand that’s both beautifully feminine and fiercely efficient. Bonnie ensures that no plate waits more than 20 minutes, and no cappuccino more than seven. Kerry anchors operations, keeping systems sharp and finances tight.
The real magic though is how they’ve built a space where women flourish. “Girl Power is real,” Bonnie laughs. “Our head office, our store teams — 90% are women.” For many guests, Goddess Café isn’t only a place to eat; it’s where birthdays are celebrated, businesses are brainstormed, and friendships blossom.
It’s a sanctuary where women can show up exactly as they are — whether they’re CEOs, moms, students, or sisters out for a catch-up. It’s also one of the few spots in Sandton that opens early enough for 6h00 commuters. And that? That’s the genius of Goddess Café. Style meets substance. Beauty meets backbone.

Founded by: Ameera
Green Dot Café is the kind of place that radiates soul. Every leafy corner, every green-tiled wall, every carefully balanced smoothie bowl reflects its founder’s journey — equal parts vulnerability and victory. Ameera started Green Dot as a corporate catering venture in 2017. When COVID decimated the industry, she pivoted with purpose, spent two years facing rejection from landlords, and finally opened her dream café in 2022.
The space isn’t only about health — it’s about healing. From her own battles with body image to the two years of life coaching that helped her build the confidence to lead, Ameera has poured her personal growth into every touchpoint. Her team is made up almost entirely of women, most of whom are navigating their own early-morning commutes and personal struggles. Here, they’re met with compassion and flexibility. And her guests? They arrive tense, tech-tethered, corporate-tired — and leave exhaling, recharged by warm motherly service, and wellness-minded menus. It’s not unusual to find a table of high-powered executives brunching in tekkies or a mom group having a kombucha toast.
Green Dot is about finding joy in the moment. A green juice on a hard day. A smile from the barista who remembers your name. A business that isn’t chasing perfection, but wholeness.

Yield Coffee Bar is a place where time slows down. Founded by Marelize, who left the buzz of banking for the hum of an espresso machine, Yield is a decade-strong love story to her neighbourhood. She saw a need for early-morning coffee, but what she built is so much more.
Yield opens at dawn for Sandton commuters, but lingers in your heart like a good playlist. From hand-chalked running routes to spontaneous outdoor workouts, its community vibe is unmatched. The Yield Running Club now meets weekly, raises funds for charity, and bonds over recovery lattes and banana bread.
Marelize’s attention to detail is unmistakable. The décor is soft, feminine, and thoughtfully curated. The coffee is consistently brilliant. And the people? Loyal regulars who’ve been coming since day one, often greeted by name. It’s not just a café; it’s home base for Jozi’s early risers, changemakers, and soul-seekers.

Co-founded by: Roxy and Mel
The Piercery is a love letter to all the women who’ve walked into a tattoo parlour and felt invisible, unsafe, or out of place. Roxy, a former broadcaster with a passion for the fashion behind piercing jewellery, and Mel, a trained piercer with a heart for healing, joined forces to reimagine the piercing studio.
What they created is revolutionary; a boutique piercing space that is calm, inclusive, and wrapped in the kind of energy that says, “You belong here.” Every detail matters — from the premium, hypoallergenic jewellery handcrafted by Roxy, to the way Mel checks in with staff around their mental health or monthly cycles.
Their team is all-female, handpicked not just for skill, but for empathy. This is a place where guests come for more than a piercing. They come to mark a milestone, to reclaim their bodies, and cry, laugh, and feel beautiful.
When their studio was robbed, it was their community — staff, customers, followers — who rebuilt it with continued customer support, solidarity, and love. That’s what The Piercery is; a family, a sisterhood, and a revolution in silver and gold.

Thrifting has evolved far beyond a budget-friendly habit. In Jozi, it has become a powerful form of resistance, creativity, and community building. It’s not only about buying second-hand clothes — it’s about redefining how we consume, connect, and care for the world around us.
Thewomen leading this movement are turning fashion into a force for good. They are reimagining the way we shop — slower, more intentional, more sustainable. Each thrift store is more than merely a retail space. It’s a story. A sanctuary. A solution.
Founder: Thelma
The story of Glee Thrifting is one of divine timing, intuition, and deep transformation. After being retrenched from her corporate IT job, Thelma found herself searching — not only for work, but for meaning. A chance
encounter at a fashion boutique led her to discover her natural flair for styling, and more importantly, the emotional power fashion can carry. When a cancer survivor walked into the shop one day, desperate to find a dress that would make her feel beautiful again, Thelma found the perfect piece. That woman cried with joy, and Thelma’s life changed.
That moment planted the seed for Glee Thrifting. It started modestly, from Thelma’s own wardrobe, sold out of a tiny garage space, but within days, she had earned more than a month’s rent. The space grew. Customers followed and soon, Glee became known not only for its high-end second-hand labels, but for its heart. Every item in the store — be it a mohair jersey or a silk blouse — is selected with care, purpose, and storytelling in mind.
Glee is a place where women come
to feel seen. The name, inspired by a Bible verse about emerging refined from adversity, speaks to Thelma’s own journey. Her events, like the monthly Sip & Shop evenings, are less about retail and more about reclaiming joy. Fashion becomes the backdrop to communitybuilding. Customers arrive curious and leave radiant, not only because of what they buy, but because of how they are welcomed. In a world that often reduces fashion to fast, forgettable moments, Glee Thrifting reminds us that personal style can be intimate, slow, and profoundly healing.

Founder: Skye
What started as a community clothes swap in a foreign country has grown into one of Jozi’s most dynamic hubs for second-hand fashion. Skye, the founder of Conrad Collective, first encountered the power of swapping in Vietnam, where she volunteered at a French-run event that offered the magic of walking away with “new” clothing for a fraction of the cost. She carried this idea home with her and began hosting her own swaps around the city. The result was electric; dozens of women gathered, not just to trade clothes, but to connect, share stories, and discover personal style.
When her landlady offered her a storefront space, it felt destined. What emerged was a truly innovative model — one that didn’t just showcase Skye’s vision, but created room for other women to thrive. Conrad Collective is now home to 13 independent thrift vendors, each with their own rail, style, and following. These micro-boutiques exist side-by-side, creating a space that feels more like a fashion festival than a traditional store.
Conrad Collective is about more than clothing. It’s about agency. Every vendor keeps the majority of her earnings and sets her own style agenda. The store sources directly from the public — bypassing charity bins and mass imports — to ensure that every item is handpicked, highquality, and deeply unique. Knits, coats, and standout winter pieces become coveted essentials, not commodities. For Skye, thrifting is about reclaiming the narrative from fast fashion. It’s about giving beautiful garments another chapter, and about giving women a platform where they’re not only earning, but owning it.

Founder: Jeanette
Born during the quiet chaos of lockdown, Ietsie Thrift is a story of turning desperation into direction. With her work as a hairdresser on pause and bills mounting, Jeanette gathered the few items she had — 10 garments, valued at just R1 000 — and decided to sell them. That humble beginning was the spark for something far greater.
Ietsie, meaning “a little something” in Afrikaans, reflects that beginning, but it also speaks to Jeanette’s mission; to create small ripples of change that eventually shape lives. Today, Ietsie Thrift is not merely a thriving shop — it is a centre of community. The store sources much of its stock from the RyMa-In Selfhelp Centre, which is a local organisation that supports vulnerable families through donated goods. When Jeanette purchases from them, she’s participating in a cycle of giving, and
when customers buy from her, they too become part of that cycle.
The clothes at Ietsie are more than fashion statements. They are carefully selected reflections of sustainability and quality. Well-loved brands like Zara and Trenery feature regularly on the rails, offering customers affordable luxury and environmental responsibility. What sets Ietsie apart is how grounded it remains. It hasn’t become a trendy thrifting brand disconnected from its origins. It is still tied to the soil, to the families it supports, to the hands that fold each jacket and the hearts that need it sold. For Jeanette, thriving is not about profit margins; it’s about being able to pay her staff. To support the family who lives on the farm with her. To live in a way that leaves no one behind.

Founder: Lizzie (“Mrs Lee”)
To walk into Mrs Lee Closet is to step into a space that wraps around you like a warm scarf on a cold day. Lizzie, its founder, didn’t just fall into thrifting — she fell in love with it. Her first taste came from afternoons browsing at Rags & Lace, searching for one-of-a-kind outfits for special events. Those moments of discovery became a lifelong passion.
When the COVID-19 pandemic dried up her income as an estate agent, Lizzie turned to what she knew and loved; beautiful, timeless clothing with a story. With resilience and a whole lot of heart, she built a store that feels more like a studio for self-worth than a retail stand. Regulars at the Rosebank and Linden Markets know that Mrs Lee Closet is a place to find something unexpected, something vintage, something “so you”.
What truly defines Mrs Lee Closet isn’t merely the inventory of stunning jackets, imported denim, or tailored skirts — it’s Lizzie herself. She is the heart of the brand. She remembers faces, celebrates bodies, and makes women feel seen in a way that’s rare in retail. She’s known for offering sincere compliments that change someone’s day — and sometimes, their life. One customer broke down in tears when Lizzie told her she looked beautiful. She had just lost her son. That one kind word became a moment of light in her darkness.
Lizzie sources her stock through carefully chosen bale suppliers and client contributions, ensuring that each item is well-made, rare, and built to last. For her, thrifting is clothing therapy. It’s how she’s survived heartbreak, built community, and found purpose. It’s how she invites every woman who steps into her world to thrive in style, no matter her journey.

Founder: Toni
Toni’s thrift shop is more than fashion — it’s an art protest wrapped in denim. As a visual artist, Toni grew increasingly disturbed by the damage done by fast fashion; polluted rivers, landfill overflow, and exploited workers. So, she responded the way artists do — by creating. She stitched together 37 pairs of damaged jeans into a king-size quilt, a striking metaphor for what’s left when we consume carelessly.
That quilt sparked interest — and then a movement. Her art became a brand, and NO PLAN-et B was born. Located in Blairgowrie, it is unlike any other thrift store in Jozi. Every piece is either handpicked for its vintage uniqueness or upcycled and reimagined by Toni herself. Her designs have made their way into music videos, photoshoots, and even the closets of celebrity stylists, but the shop’s soul lies in its activism.
Customers are encouraged to donate their old denim in exchange for discounts. Toni repurposes what others discard into something breathtaking, giving new life to waste and new purpose to shoppers. It’s not about trends — it’s about transformation. The store promotes a culture of buying better, mending what’s broken, and loving what lasts. It’s also a love letter to Jozi’s young, creative
community, many of whom are hungry for a way to look good while doing good.
For Toni, thriving means staying true to your convictions, even if that means forging a new path. She’s not in this to fit into fashion’s mould — she’s here to break it, and in doing so, she invites others to do the same.

The Jozi thrift scene is not only booming — it’s blooming. It’s rooted in purpose, wrapped in resilience, and growing through the collective energy of women who refuse to settle for waste, for fast, for shallow. These women are proving that you don’t need mass production to look powerful. Fashion can be kind. Local is beautiful. Thriving doesn’t require a runway — it merely needs a little heart, a little something “ietsie”, and a whole lot of community. In a world that needs bold new ways to care for people and the planet, thrifting is one of the simplest, most stylish solutions, and in Jozi, it’s leading a quiet revolution — one preloved piece at a time.
You were never meant to just survive. You were made to thrive.
Let’s be honest — life is loud. It’s a series of to-do lists, deadlines, school runs, social expectations, WhatsApp groups, and emotional loads we rarely unpack. It’s no wonder so many women find themselves stuck in survival mode. But here’s the truth; surviving isn’t the goal. Thriving is. And thriving doesn’t mean doing more. It means becoming more of you — your most present, peaceful, powerful self.
In the spirit of #Twenty20Thrive, let’s unpack what it means to move from just coping to truly living, and how to define your own version of thriving — whether you’re a stay-at-home superhero, boardroom boss, athlete, artist, single warrior, or partner in the trenches.
The truth is — thriving looks different for every woman.
Thriving is not perfection. It’s not about nailing every goal or staying calm while juggling everything. It’s the deep, often quiet confidence that you are okay — rooted, joyful, resilient, and connected to your life’s purpose.
For some, thriving means saying no without guilt, taking a walk around the block with your toddler and calling it a win, or hitting your personal best at the gym — or simply managing to show up for the class. It might look like building a business from scratch, or just as powerfully, choosing to leave a high-powered job to be more present. Thriving can also mean letting go of mom guilt and owning the way you parent — whether you breastfeed, bottle-feed, homeschool, or rely on cartoons to get through the day. Thriving isn’t a onesize-fits-all. It’s a mindset, not a milestone.
Here are five simple but powerful shifts that can help you move out of autopilot and into alignment with the life you’re meant to live.
Boundaries are not walls; they’re gates that help filter what supports your well-being and what drains it. Without them, burnout becomes inevitable. As women, especially in roles of caregiving or leadership, we often feel obligated to always be available, but your time and energy are valuable resources.
Try this:
• Create a “stop doing” list alongside your to-do list.
• Practise saying: “Let me get back to you,” to give yourself space before committing.
• Block time in your calendar for you, even if it’s just for rest or reflection. “It’s okay to disappoint others if it means I no longer disappoint myself.”
Mental health is just as important as physical health. In fact, one often affects the other. When you ignore your emotional cues — like persistent sadness, anger, or disconnection— they fester and impact everything from relationships to work performance to your immune system.
Try this:
• Build check-ins into your week: “How am I really feeling today?”
• Seek professional support before a crisis — therapy is for thriving, not only surviving.
• Engage in activities that nourish you mentally; reading, walking in nature, prayer, breathwork, or creating art. “My emotions are messengers, not enemies.”
Guilt can be one of the heaviest burdens women carry — especially mothers. Whether it’s mom guilt, work guilt, or even rest guilt, it’s usually born from internalised beliefs that your worth is tied to your output. Thriving begins when we release shame and own our choices.
Try this:
• Journal your guilt. Ask: “Is this mine, or something I was taught to carry?”
• Replace “I should” with “I choose to” — language matters.
• Celebrate progress, not perfection. Small wins count. “I release the need to prove my worth. I am already enough.”
Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s survival in disguise. When you show up for yourself, you show up better for your loved ones too. Self-care isn’t a luxury spa day; it’s the tiny, consistent rituals that say: “I matter.”
Try this:
• Define what replenishes you — not what Instagram says is self-care.
• Build in micro-moments of joy; a dance break, a favourite playlist, or morning tea in silence.
• Schedule your pleasure — not only productivity. Thrive time > grind time. “I deserve rest, joy, and care — even when life is full.”
When you stop chasing society’s version of “having it all”, and start embracing your own path, that’s when the magic happens. Success might mean running a business, raising a family, healing from trauma, or simply feeling whole again.
Try this:
• List three values that matter to you (e.g. creativity, freedom, peace, family, faith).
• Set one goal each week that aligns with these.
• Say this out loud: “Success for me this week looks like…” and finish the sentence with your truth.
“My success is not a copy-paste template. I get to define what thriving means for me.”
Whether you’re a full-time mom, a part-time dreamer, a high-flying executive, or a woman simply trying to get through the day — you are worthy of a life that feels good on the inside, not just one that looks good on the outside.
Let this be the year you choose your version of thriving.

For Dr Nadia Dannhauser, beauty isn’t just skin deep; it’s a story, a comeback, a celebration of what’s already there. Her Jozibased aesthetic practice has become a sanctuary for women rewriting their stories — not by becoming someone new, but by rediscovering themselves.
Dr Nadia’s studio is a space where beauty meets heart. Book a consultation and start your journey to feeling vibrant, confident, and unapologetically you.

With a background in dentistry, Dr Nadia’s journey into aesthetic medicine was borne from a love of symmetry, precision, and soulful connection. It wasn’t just about changing faces — it was about holding space for someone’s evolution.
“My whole life feels like an evolving piece of art,” she often says. Her work reflects that same ethos — each treatment a brushstroke, each consultation a moment of truth.
In Dr Nadia’s world, to thrive means freedom. Freedom to say yes to joy, no to pressure, and permission to live aligned with your truth. It’s not about a full calendar or flashy success. It’s about moments of laughter, sipping tea in the garden, and doing meaningful work that nourishes both the giver and receiver.
Thriving isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s a quiet glow. Sometimes it’s showing up bare-faced and bold. That’s what she helps women do — step into their story, powerfully and softly.
Women come to her for a “fix” — but what they receive is something deeper. With monthly peels, personalised skincare, or simply being held in a calming, curated space, they often find confidence blooming. In the words of the patient who whispered: “This is the first time I feel okay leaving the
house without makeup.” That’s not just skincare; that’s liberation.
The goal? Remove layers of doubt. Let radiance rise.
Stepping into her practice feels less like a clinic and more like a storybook. Antique carpets underfoot, botanical gardens outside, heirloom china for your tea, and while your numbing cream settles in, a soft blanket and a gentle hand massage await. Every detail whispers: You deserve this.
She believes this kind of care influences more than skin — it shifts energy. When women feel seen, heard, and nurtured, they remember their worth, and that’s what real beauty is about.
Her toolkit is diverse; collagen biostimulators to awaken skin, wrinklerelaxing injections to soften lines, and hyaluronic acid fillers to restore volume, but not to overwhelm it. She champions profile balancing — an artistic approach that enhances symmetry, structure, and the harmony of the whole face.
The magic is in the nuance. It’s never about erasing age or chasing trends. It’s about looking like yourself, on your best day. Or as she puts it, “You’re not creating something that was never there. You’re honouring the original design.”
Let’s clear it up — fillers don’t stay forever. They aren’t silicone, and, yes, they can be dissolved. With the right hands and thoughtful planning, they simply amplify what’s already beautiful. From volumising cheekbones to hydrating skin boosters, Dr Nadia selects filler types based on goals — from structure to hydration, to glow. “Most women you pass every day have had filler —and you’d never know,” she smiles.
Your skin tells your story — but it’s only the surface. Stress, sleep, hormones, and emotional well-being all leave their mark. That’s why Dr Nadia takes a holistic approach — asking questions, offering integrative support, and referring patients to specialists when needed. She works with hormone doctors, functional medicine professionals, and trauma-informed therapists, because transformation takes a team.
While many seek instant change, Dr Nadia champions a slower, more soulful path; long-term planning, layered treatment strategies, and results that evolve with time. “We’re not panic-fixing — we’re co-creating,” she says. Think
of it like building a dream wardrobe; timeless, tailored, totally you.
For her, natural beauty means looking like you, but only fresher, softer, and more at ease. Sometimes that includes more product than expected, but with artistry and anatomical precision, even bolder treatments remain subtle.
In fact, the best compliments are the quiet ones: “You look so well!” or “Did you just come back from holiday?” That’s how you know the magic’s working.
Why Jozi? Because Jozi is raw and real. It’s a city of hustle, heart, and reinvention — just like her. “We don’t just survive here. We shine,” she says. That same spirit pulses through her studio.
In a world that asks women to shrink, she says: “Show up loud. Or quiet. Just make sure you show up as you.”
Dr Nadia’s path hasn’t been easy. After divorce, illness, and restarting her practice from scratch, she found strength in the softest places — her dogs, her friends, her inner fire. She read, researched, and rebuilt her studio with her own hands (and spreadsheets). The result? A thriving business that runs on integrity, artistry, and joy.
To young women entering the aesthetics world, she says: Start with heart. Stay humble. Study everything — not just injectables, but people. Psychology. Energy. Beauty is emotional work. It’s sacred.
Don’t copy. Be curious. Honour your patients. Lead with love. That’s how legacies are built.
To the women of Jozi — and every woman trying to thrive — Dr Nadia offers this: Own your story. Don’t wait for perfect. Live in your truth. Cry when you need to. Laugh a little too loud. Choose yourself again and again.
Because real beauty isn’t filtered. It’s felt.
And thriving? It’s wearing leopard print on a Monday. It’s sipping pink wine on your porch. It’s knowing your favourite smell — and building a life that smells like that.
