This is your moment. The moment to stand tall, to speak loud, and to step boldly into your power. The SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha isn’t merely a Challenge Day — it’s a celebration of who we are as women. Strong. Fearless. Unstoppable.
As we embrace #Twenty20Thrive, I want you to remember this: You were not made to shrink or dim your light. You were made to shine, to thrive, to break boundaries, and build new ones. You are a force of nature and this is your time to own it.
Whether you’re walking the 5km with your sisters, running the 10km for a personal best, or cheering from the sidelines — every step you take is a declaration: I am here. I matter. I thrive.
Let go of the doubts and the “not enoughs”. You are more than enough. You are worthy of success, of joy, of healing, of love, and of dreams that set your soul on fire. This Challenge is about more than kilometres; it’s about courage, resilience, and community. What an incredible community we have — powered by SPAR, and filled with women who uplift, support, and champion one another.
So, I invite you: Unleash your inner strength. Speak your truth. Own your space.
This is your year to take bold action and thrive in every area of your life. Don’t apologise for your ambition. Don’t silence your voice to make others comfortable. And don’t play small when your heart knows you’re meant for more.
Together, we rise. We lift each other. We conquer Challenge Day, but more importantly, we conquer the doubts that once held us back.
Let your story inspire others. Share your journey. Show up, speak up, and thrive unapologetically.
Let’s do this — together. Let’s #Twenty20Thrive. With fierce love and strength.

01. Humans Only, Please
We love animals, but with approximately 5,000 participants and their families, the environment can be overwhelming for them. Please leave your furry friends at home.
02. Family Fun for All
Children and babies can join the fun! For their safety, please stay behind the front runners. We recommend writing your name and cell phone number on their arm in case they are separated from you or run ahead in the excitement. If your little ones would like their own goodie bag, please ensure they have a paid entry.
Men are welcome to join the Challenge – but take note, prizes are for the ladies only. Don’t worry, you’ll still walk away with a goodie bag! Gentlemen may only enter the 5km race, where the rule is simple: dress up, bring your best thrive, and enjoy the fun from the back of the pack.
Once you have entered online at sparwomenschallenge.co.za/gqeberha, you will be able to collect your Challenge pack from the Pollok Beach Grass Area during the week leading up to the Challenge.
Entering is as easy as 1-2-3! Simply enter online at sparwomenschallenge.co.za/ gqeberha, then choose whether you’d like to pay online or in-store using the barcode that will be emailed to you. Please note that the barcode is only valid for 3 days, but if it expires, you can repeat the online entry process to receive a new one.
While wearing your official Challenge T-shirt is not mandatory, we would appreciate it as a symbol of solidarity. No other specific clothing is required unless you are competing for a category prize.
You can pick up your race number, T-shirt, and goodie bag during Challenge week between 09h00 to 18h00 from 22 to 26 September, or on Challenge morning from 05h30. We’ll also send emails and SMS notifications with all the details closer to collection time.
Yes, the time is right – the 10km starts at 07h00 and the 5km at 07h30. We know mornings can be busy for many women, which is why the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha is designed to get you moving early, leaving the rest of your day free to celebrate your achievement. With plenty of water stations along the way, you’ll stay hydrated and energised, especially if the weather warms up. Let’s make the most of a beautiful morning at the beach!
A marked medical tent staffed by qualified medical personnel will be on the field. Emergency teams will also be stationed at water points and the finish line, with ambulances on standby for any medical situations. The route is 100% wheelchair and pram friendly.
The 10km race results will be available on the day of the race and will be posted on www.raceresults.co.za. Please note that the 5km event is not timed, so results will not be published.

Challenge Day Anthem – Andy Ndlazilwana
Every movement needs a soundtrack, and this year, legendary vocalist Andy Ndlazilwana delivers just that. A respected figure in South African music, Andy’s anthem will stir hearts and unify voices as we raise awareness and hope in our walk to End GBV. Expect goosebumps when her voice fills the air.
This Challenge Day, it’s not only about the kilometres covered — it’s about the spirit we carry. With this unforgettable entertainment line-up, the spirit of thriving, rising, and standing together will be louder than ever.
Join us at the Pollok Beach Grass Area on 27 September where every beat celebrates how far we’ve come, and how boldly we thrive.
The SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha is more than just a race – it’s a movement. Every stride you take, whether running or walking, will be in support of an ongoing cause that affects every community in South Africa: Ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The objective of this year’s Challenge is clear – we run and walk for a cause. That cause is powerful, urgent, and deeply personal to so many; building safer communities where women, children, and vulnerable individuals can live free from fear. GBV remains one of the most pressing social issues in our country,
and together with our charity partners, SPAR is committed to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and funding programmes that make a real difference.
GBV is not merely a violation of human rights – it’s a deep wound in the fabric of
our society. The statistics are staggering, but behind each number is a real person, a real story, and a real need for change. SPAR believes that change starts with action –and that action can come in many forms; speaking out, offering support, donating, and showing up. The
SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha gives every participant the chance to take a stand. On Challenge Day, our collective footsteps will echo a message of hope, strength, and resilience. Through ongoing partnerships, we will ensure that the funds raised continue to support organisations working at the frontline of GBV prevention and survivor support.
Our chosen charities for 2025 embody the compassion, strength, and practical support needed to tackle GBV and uplift those most affected.
In the heart of Gqeberha, Ubuntu Pathways has been rewriting the stories of thousands of children and families for more than two decades. What began as a small grassroots project has grown into a world-class institution offering lifechanging services. Their work is rooted in the belief that breaking the cycle of poverty and vulnerability means more than a single intervention;
it requires a lifetime of consistent, reliable support.
Ubuntu commits to walking alongside each child from their earliest days until they graduate into a stable, independent adulthood. The organisation provides high-quality education that begins in early childhood and extends through career guidance, ensuring that every young person is equipped to succeed. Their health care services address physical, mental, and emotional well-being, including HIV care, nutrition, and trauma counselling, creating a safety net for vulnerable families. Just as importantly, Ubuntu works closely with communities to protect children from abuse, neglect, and violence, offering pathways to healing and resilience.
For survivors of GBV, Ubuntu provides a safe space, compassionate counselling, and the practical resources needed to rebuild lives. Their success stories are proof that when a community comes together, lasting change is possible. Learn more: www.ubuntupathways.org
When someone is in crisis, the first step towards safety and healing is often a conversation – one where they are heard without judgement, believed without question, and guided towards help. That is what Lifeline provides, day and night, every day of the year.
Lifeline’s team of trained counsellors are the frontline responders in moments of distress. They offer immediate, confidential crisis counselling to those who have experienced GBV and other forms of trauma. Their role extends beyond the first conversation; they walk alongside survivors through trauma debriefing, helping them process their experiences and begin the difficult journey towards recovery. Lifeline also acts as a bridge to further support, connecting individuals to
shelters, legal aid, medical services, and other critical resources.
Beyond their phone lines, Lifeline is active in communities, running awareness campaigns and prevention programmes that encourage open dialogue about violence, abuse, and mental health. For many, Lifeline is the first place where they feel truly heard, the first step towards reclaiming control over their lives. In moments when hope feels far away, they are a lifeline in every sense of the word.

In past years, our Challenge has been about personal goals, fitness, and fun. Now, it’s about something more. It’s about taking your Challenge number and making it count for someone else’s life. It’s about turning kilometres into conversations, conversations into awareness, and awareness into action.
Imagine thousands of women, men, and children crossing the finish line – each step a statement: We will not be silent. We will not stand by. We will end GBV.

Because when women thrive, communities rise.
In the heart of the Eastern Cape, something extraordinary is happening; a powerful partnership between SPAR and Leafline, a proudly South African company, which is not only reducing waste, but restoring dignity to women — one sanitary pad at a time.
Founded in 2018 by the trailblazing Candy Androliakos, Leafline was born from a simple observation; too many women, especially in underserved communities, being forced to make impossible choices during their menstrual cycles.
Working in a retirement home, Candy saw firsthand the discomfort and environmental harm caused by disposable products. So, she set out to create something better — something truly sustainable, compassionate, and proudly local.
The result? A revolutionary range of washable and reusable sanitary towels made from the fibres of the Cayenne pineapple leaf — a byproduct of pineapple harvesting that is spun into a soft, highly absorbent material. These pads are durable (lasting up to two years!), discreet, comfortable, and easy to wash. And yes, they even fold into a stylish little pouch that looks like a Shwe Shwe cloth on the line.
“We’re committed to changing the narrative around periods,” says Candy. “Women deserve choices that are safe, affordable, and respectful of the environment.”
Partnership with Purpose: SPAR
Today, Leafline products are available at selected SPAR stores across the Eastern Cape, with plans to expand to hundreds more by the end of 2025, but this is more than a retail relationship — it’s a purposeful partnership.
Candy and her team have also partnered with local organisations such as Rotary Grahamstown and Port Alfred, extending their
reach through grassroots collaboration. In the spirit of inclusive upliftment, production takes place with the help of talented women from the Enkuthazweni Special Needs Centre, who gain vital employment, training, and empowerment along the way.
Leafline launched its own fibre facility in the Eastern Cape at the beginning of 2025, with support from Fetola and the SAB Foundation, which will continue to create more jobs and reduce the environmental impact even further.
This growth isn’t only about scale; it’s about
building a circular economy of care — where products are made locally, serve communities directly, and are created by the very women they support. Leafline’s commitment to menstrual dignity, sustainable living, and social inclusion echoes everything the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha stands for.
As you take to the streets on 27 September at Pollok Beach, know that every step reflects something greater. Running in the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha is a symbol of thriving in every sense — and with Leafline as part of the
journey, we’re showing that empowerment begins with meeting basic needs with dignity and care.
Visit your nearest participating SPAR store and choose Leafline. It’s not just a product; it’s a promise to help women rise, to tread lighter on the earth, and to thrive together.

Each year, the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha is fuelled by powerful voices who lead with heart, passion, and purpose. Our 2025 ambassadors embody the spirit of #Twenty20Thrive — uplifting others, embracing authenticity, and reminding us all of the strength found in community. Whether through movement, storytelling, or everyday kindness, these women inspire us to show up, stand tall, and thrive together.
Behind every iconic event, there’s a driving force whose passion brings it all together. For the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha, that person is Honey Koba — a powerhouse working behind the scenes in SPAR’s Sponsorship and CSI department. Her work may not be centre stage, but its impact is felt across the province.
“For me, this Challenge is more than just a race — it’s a celebration of resilience and unity,” Honey shares. “Every year, I see strangers become a community. That spirit is what keeps me inspired.”
Honey’s role at SPAR is more than a job — it’s a calling. From supporting local NGOs to creating platforms that uplift women, her work ensures that the Eastern Cape’s heartbeat stays strong. “We’re giving women visibility, encouragement, and most importantly, the opportunity to thrive.”
This year’s theme, #Twenty20Thrive, holds particular meaning. “After 20 years, we’re not just looking
back — we’re looking forward,” she says. “It’s time for all of us to thrive, together. To grow, to rise, to live fully.”
One moment that stays with her? At the 2024 Challenge, when the 5km walkers stopped and spontaneously cheered for the 10km runners finishing their race. “There were tears, cheers, and such raw emotion. No one told them to do it. It was just women honouring women.”
For Honey, Challenge Day is electric. “You see generations walking side by side, wearing their SPAR shirts with pride. That shared energy — it’s magic.”
Working at SPAR, a brand so deeply rooted in community upliftment, gives Honey a sense of purpose. “SPAR walks the talk. It’s not just about business, it’s about heart.”
Her message to first-time participants? “Don’t wait until you feel ready — just show up. For yourself. For your community. For the joy.”
#Twenty20Thrive isn’t merely a theme, it’s a movement, and thanks to people like Honey Koba, it’s one that continues to grow stronger each year.
Tammy Southby
(aka Sunshine Simplicities)
With an infectious smile and a heart full of gratitude, Tammy Southby, affectionately known as Sunshine Simplicities, is the kind of woman who makes you want to slow down and soak in the beauty of everyday moments. What started as a digital photo journal of her travels across South Africa has blossomed into a joyful, thriving community — one that celebrates small towns, simple pleasures, and the stories we risk forgetting.
After stepping away from her demanding corporate job, Tammy committed fulltime to capturing the charm of the road less travelled and writing a book of stories and reflections. Sunshine Simplicities has since become a space to uplift, connect, and inspire — with breathtaking snapshots, uplifting captions, and a growing tribe of followers who greet each other in the comments with a cheerful “Good morning!”.
Her approach to wellness is refreshingly human. “I fall off the bus often,” she laughs, “but I always try to get back on.” For Tammy, movement is about feeling better, not looking perfect. It’s part of her journey to
thrive again — body, mind, and soul.
In a world flooded with negativity, Tammy’s mission is simple but vital; find the sunshine in the simple things. She reminds us that kindness is free and that sharing a compliment, a smile, or a word of encouragement could be the spark someone else needs. “We’re all capable of kindness,” she says. “Let’s use it.”
The SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha resonates deeply with Tammy’s ethos. She sees it as a space for all women — regardless of background or fitness level — to come together and celebrate their strength. “Wear a tutu, push a pram, take selfies… Just show up and thrive,” she beams.
This year’s theme, #Twenty20Thrive, hits home for Tammy. It’s her
call to step out, believe in herself, and keep Sunshine Simplicities glowing strong. Her advice to women feeling overwhelmed? Start small. Choose joy. Be kind to yourself. And keep going. And when all else fails, she adds with a wink, take the photo.
East London-born, now proudly rooted in Gqeberha since 2010, Caileigh Goddard’s journey in fitness has been shaped by over 13 years’ experience, a BPsych Counselling degree from NMU, and a fierce passion for helping women live fuller, stronger lives. As founder of Boost Personal Training Studio, a ladies-only fitness space, Caileigh has created more than merely a gym — it’s a sanctuary of support, real results, and unapologetic empowerment. “Whether you’re a beginner or starting over, you’re welcome here,”
she says with a smile. What makes Boost Personal Training Studio unique is its heart.
“Movement has the power to transform lives — not only physically, but emotionally and mentally too,” Caileigh explains. “It’s not about becoming someone else. It’s about becoming more of yourself.” She’s seen firsthand how lifting a weight or finishing a tough workout can ignite self-belief, resilience, and joy in women who once doubted their own strength.
As a proud mom of two, Caileigh brings authenticity
and purpose to everything she does. Her approach is gentle and rooted in connection, but make no mistake, she’s passionate about helping women realise just how capable they truly are.
Her relationship with the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha goes back a decade, when she first served as an ambassador in her early fitness days. “That experience was the start of something big,” she reflects. “It connected me with a community of strong women, and it’s come full circle now. The energy, the growth — it’s been incredible.”
This year’s theme, #Twenty20Thrive, aligns beautifully with the mission at Boost. “Thriving means more than working out; it’s about living with purpose, overcoming doubt, and showing up for yourself in every area of life,” she says. From supporting baby homes to hosting women’s selfdefence sessions, Caileigh ensures that Boost gives back where it matters most.
Her message to women? “You are stronger than you think. Every step you take, no matter how small, is a win. Don’t wait for confidence to come. Build it, one movement at a time.”
With a thriving studio, a growing community, and a clear sense of purpose, Caileigh is living proof that when women rise together, everything changes.
As you get ready to step onto the Challenge Day start line at Pollok Beach, know that every stride you take is backed by a brand that believes in you. SPAR, a household name across South Africa, is not just your trusted neighbourhood grocer — it’s a powerful catalyst for women’s empowerment and community transformation.
From supplying our homes with daily essentials to fuelling nationwide initiatives that uplift and unite, SPAR has long proven that its heart beats far beyond the checkout counter. Nowhere is this more evident than in its deep, unwavering support for the SPAR Women’s Challenge and the prestigious SPAR Grand Prix series.
The SPAR Women’s Challenge is more than a fitness event — it’s a celebration of sisterhood, strength and solidarity. Held in cities across South Africa, including Gqeberha, this annual celebration invites women of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels to join in a shared experience of joy, empowerment, and purpose.
“SPAR believes in the power of people,” says Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager.
“Our sponsorship of the SPAR Women’s Challenge is rooted in our purpose to inspire people to do and be more. Whether elite athletes or first-time walkers, every participant reflects the values
we hold dear — resilience, courage and unity.”
SPAR’s commitment runs deeper than medals and finish lines. The Women’s Challenge is a bold platform to advocate for causes that matter — from championing healthy lifestyles to tackling urgent issues such as period poverty and gender-based violence (GBV).
“These are not just races,” Mpudi explains. “They are platforms for change. Every entry helps us raise awareness and gather resources so that no girl ever has to miss school due to a lack of sanitary pads, and no woman feels alone in the fight against GBV. We will not look away.”
With every step taken on Challenge Day, participants help build a future where dignity is restored, voices are heard, and every woman is given the space to thrive.
The SPAR Grand Prix series is where passion meets performance — a national race series that shines a spotlight on South
Africa’s top female athletes. By offering substantial prize money and nationwide visibility, SPAR creates a runway for women to rise, succeed and inspire.
“It’s vital for the development of women’s sport,” says Mpudi. “We’re proud to offer a platform where athletes can gain recognition and become role models for the next generation. We want young girls to see what’s possible.”
So as you pin your number, warm up your muscles, and soak in the spirit of the day, remember — you’re part of something bigger. The SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha is a celebration of thriving women, communities coming together, and a brand that shows up, not only with food on the shelf, but with hope in action.
Here’s to every runner, every cause, and every woman who dares to thrive. Thank you, SPAR, for being more than a sponsor — for being a partner in purpose.
See you at the finish line. We run together. We thrive together.
Every month, millions of girls across South Africa face a quiet crisis. They miss school, skip sports, and feel ashamed — not because they’re sick or unwilling, but because they don’t have access to sanitary pads. Period poverty remains a widespread issue, and while it’s rarely spoken about, it’s felt deeply in classrooms, communities and homes.
SPAR believes it’s time to talk. And more than that — it’s time to act.
That’s why SPAR launched its End Period Poverty campaign; a national initiative that brings dignity back into the hands of young girls. By making sanitary pads available to those who cannot afford them, the campaign helps ensure that no girl misses school or loses confidence because of her period. In every way, this initiative speaks directly to the heart of the SPAR Women’s Challenge theme for 2025; #Twenty20Thrive.
For SPAR, this campaign is about more than product access. It’s about equality, the right to education, and breaking the silence that still surrounds menstruation. For far too long, periods
have been whispered about in shame. SPAR is changing that by leading conversations, raising awareness, and giving customers a tangible way to be involved.
One of the most impactful elements of the campaign is the ability for customers to donate pads right at the store. In selected SPAR stores across the country, shoppers can buy a packet of sanitary pads and place it in the dedicated donation bin near the tills. These donations are then distributed to local schools and organisations that support girls in need. It’s a simple act — often less than R20 — but one that could mean a full week of uninterrupted education for a young girl.
Gqeberha schools and community groups have already begun to feel the difference. Teachers have reported fewer absentee days, improved self-esteem among learners, and a new sense of confidence that radiates beyond the classroom. One school principal shared how something as basic as access to pads had shifted the way girls show up for themselves and their futures.
In many ways, this is what the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha is all about — helping women thrive, no matter their circumstances. It’s why this campaign matters, and why we invite every reader, every walker and every supporter to become part of the solution.
If you’d like to contribute,
you don’t have to wait until your next grocery trip. You can donate directly to the campaign using the QR code provided. It will take you to the official Donate Now page, where your contribution goes directly towards supplying sanitary products to those who need them most. Every donation counts and every girl deserves the dignity of managing her period with pride and safety.
For many of us, a period is a minor inconvenience. For others, it’s the reason they fall behind. Let’s change that together.
Because no girl should ever have to choose between her education and her dignity. Together with SPAR, we can end period poverty. Period.

When Nozibele Qamngana-Mayaba — affectionately known as Nozi — was diagnosed with HIV in 2013 at just 22, her world stopped. She was scared, ashamed, and felt like her life was over, but instead of letting that moment define her, she slowly began rewriting the narrative—not just for herself, but for women across South Africa.
F rom those early days of vulnerability on YouTube, Nozi has emerged as a powerful author, international speaker, TV host, mother and advocate. Her journey from diagnosis to influence hasn’t just been one of resilience, it’s been a masterclass in thriving.
Her memoirs, I Am Still Me and Positively Me , peeled back the curtain on the realities of living with HIV. “The hardest part to write? The day of my diagnosis,” she says. “But the most rewarding chapter
was reclaiming my identity.” Nozi’s storytelling style is raw yet empowering. Whether she’s unpacking Black Tax, motherhood, mental health, or relationships, her honesty cuts through silence and shame. “In South Africa, silence has kept us stuck.
I couldn’t find voices that looked like mine— young, vibrant, relatable, so, I became that voice.
By naming our experiences, we disarm shame and create space for healing.”
Motherhood has added new purpose and urgency to her voice. “I think about the legacy I want to leave, not just for me, but for my son. I want him to grow up knowing women can be soft and strong.”
Her version of thriving in 2025? “Living fully, not perfectly. Choosing joy, embracing rest, and staying rooted in who I am.” For Nozi, thriving also means therapy, prayer, journaling, and surrounding herself
with a sisterhood that holds her up. “Healing isn’t a final destination; it’s a rhythm I return to.”
And she protects her peace fiercely. “I unplug when I need to. I rest without guilt. I remind myself that I am worthy beyond my work.”
What sets Nozi apart is how deeply her work aligns with the values of SPAR; building community, empowering women, and fighting gender-based violence. Through her social platforms, podcast, and partnerships, she offers
safe spaces for women living with HIV and those wrestling with shame. “I highlight their stories so no one feels alone. Healing is communal.”
To corporates, she offers this advice: “Support must be relational, not just transactional. Partner with those doing the work. Listen, learn, and commit long-term.”
Looking to the future, Nozi’s hope is simple yet profound: “I want my son to say, ‘My mom stood in her truth and used it to light the way for others.’” And to every woman who feels unseen or unworthy, she offers this reminder: “Your story matters. You are allowed to rise. You don’t need permission to thrive.”
So, what does #Twenty20Thrive mean to Nozi? “It’s about rewriting your story on your terms. It’s progress, not perfection. Every time you choose yourself, you are thriving.”
Alasia Moumtzis, proud owner of SUPERSPAR Newton Park, is no stranger to challenge or triumph. Her career began in 1995 when she and her late husband opened their first SPAR store in Lorraine, Port Elizabeth. Just eight days after launch, the store’s entire roof collapsed. While many panicked, Alasia realised that leadership — especially as a woman in a male-dominated industry — meant standing tall in chaos. Four months later, the store reopened. It was her baptism by fire.
Since then, her SPAR journey has grown into a legacy. Over 25 years, she’s opened several successful stores, including Atrium KWIKSPAR and Figtree SPAR, with her daughter Nerissa joining the family trade. For Alasia, building stores was never only about business — it was about creating spaces
rooted in excellence and care, always with the support of the wider SPAR family.
Her leadership hasn’t gone unnoticed. Alasia was the first woman to receive SPAR Eastern Cape’s prestigious Mr SPAR Award, which she proudly turned into a Mrs. She went on to become the first woman appointed to
SPAR’s National Guild, sitting alongside directors and retailers to shape the Group’s direction. “To sit at that table as the only woman — it was a proud moment,” she recalls.
Behind the polished storefronts lay deeper battles. Alasia’s late husband, though sharp and strategic, struggled with depression — a weight that affected their marriage, family, and business. With SPAR’s support, she bought him out of the business in 2016. Merely a year later, he tragically passed away by suicide. “It was excruciating,” she shares. “But my daughter and I, with our loyal team, carried the business forward.”
In 2021, she was named SPAR SA Retailer of the Year; a national honour that brought tears of joy. “It felt like closing a circle of love and purpose with SPAR.”
But 2023 brought yet another test; a breast cancer diagnosis. What started as a small lump turned into surgery, chemotherapy, and 18 months of healing. “I lost my hair. My body ached, but I was never alone.” Her daughter stepped in to manage the business, while Alasia focused on recovery, surrounded by love, supported by community, and comforted by the loyalty of customers who knew her not only as a retailer, but as a woman.
Today, Alasia is in remission. Her days are slower, more intentional. “I exercise three times a week, and I’ve finally handed over the reins to Nerissa,” she smiles. Her son-in-law, a chef and baker, is also joining the business. “My succession plan is thriving — and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Nerissa, a lawyer by profession and an experienced retailer, is no stranger to taking charge.
When Alasia was diagnosed, she stepped in and ran the store on her own — coolheaded, capable, and fiercely committed. She’s a tough cookie in this industry and an incredible caretaker of her mother. We always thrive when we surround ourselves with the right, knowledgeable people — and for Alasia, this was her daughter.
For Alasia, #Twenty20Thrive is about breathing deeply, shopping
for fun, travelling to see friends, and embracing life with gratitude. She’s quietly donated wigs to women undergoing treatment, supported animal welfare causes, and plans to volunteer at a children’s hospice when ready. “Helping where I can, without fanfare, is part of who I am.”
Her message to other women?
“Be kind to yourself. Ask for help. Don’t carry your burdens alone. There’s always light — even when you can’t see it.”
Despite foot surgery earlier this year, Alasia is determined to walk the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha 5km. “I’ve done most of them
over the years — it’s one of my favourite events.” She’s humbled to share her story. “After nearly 30 years with SPAR, I’m still thriving — and yes, now I wear a diamond tiara and my daughter Nerissa wears the crown.”
In her words to her younger self?
“Finish your degree. Don’t do business with your spouse. Let go of perfectionism. Enjoy the ride more. Marry rich.” She laughs, “That last one is a joke. Sort of.”
From heartbreak to healing, boardrooms to bakery shelves, Alasia is the embodiment of thriving. Hers is not only a story of retail success; it’s a story of resilience, reinvention, and the enduring power of community.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer futuristic — it’s part of our everyday lives. From voice assistants to education apps, AI helps us move faster, work smarter, and connect further. But as exciting as it is, it also raises urgent questions: Are women being left behind in this digital leap? Are our children safe online? And how do we fight genderbased violence in the virtual world? At the heart of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Gqeberha lies a call to thrive — not just survive. Here’s how we can do just that in an AI-powered world.
By Marie-Anne teBrake
AI is transforming businesses, from chatbots to smart systems that predict what we want to buy. However, while some jobs are evolving, others are becoming obsolete. Admin and customer service roles — often held by women — are among the first to go.
The good news?
New doors are opening. Women who reskill in digital fields can access growing opportunities in tech, creativity, ethics, and communications.
From coding to content moderation, empathy and ethical thinking are now in demand.
Mentorships, scholarships, and accelerators are helping women claim their space in tech. The future must be inclusive, and that starts today.
Children are growing up in a world shaped by algorithms, from learning apps to YouTube recommendations, AI is a big part of their lives. While tech can help personalise education, it can also affect concentration, social skills, and sleep.
What can we do? Guide, don’t just monitor. Set healthy screen-time boundaries, encourage real-life friendships, and talk openly about what they’re watching and why. Critical thinking is the new literacy.
AI brings progress, but also new threats. Online gender-based violence (GBV) is rising, from cyberstalking to deepfakes. Platforms powered by AI can either fuel the problem or be part of the solution.
SPAR stands for zero tolerance. We must push for stronger digital laws,
call out harmful behaviour, and empower women with tools to protect themselves. Community awareness, education, and survivor support are more vital than ever.
Let’s create online spaces where women feel safe, heard, and respected.
If women aren’t part of designing AI, the results won’t work for everyone. Biased systems are a real issue as the teams building them don’t reflect society.
We need more girls in STEM, more women in AI ethics, and more diverse voices shaping tech policy. AI can help women thrive — if it’s built with inclusion in mind.
AI is here to stay, but instead of fearing it, we can choose to shape it. Let’s teach our children digital safety. Let’s upskill and support women into tech careers. Let’s speak out against digital GBV.
Together, we can build a future where technology empowers, never endangers. This is what #Twenty20Thrive is all about; growing, protecting, and rising together.
Our digital future — stronger, safer, smarter.
For over four decades, the names Loynes and Keith Jenkerson have been woven into the fabric of South African running and the SPAR Women’s Challenge. United by their passion for sport and their unwavering belief in giving back, the brothers dedicated their lives to “Running for Those Who Can’t”. From raising funds for wheelchairs in Port Elizabeth to completing extraordinary world runs in SPAR colours, their footsteps echo with resilience, compassion, and a lifelong commitment to uplifting communities. This is not merely the story of two men — it is the legacy of brand ambassadors whose loyalty to SPAR has touched thousands of lives. Together, they turned their passion into a powerful force for good under the trusted SPAR name.
By Veanne Falco
The driving force behind the SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge and 5km Fun Run for nearly three decades. A newspaper article once captured it perfectly: “Behind every successful man there may be a woman, but behind the thousands of women (and some confused men in the 5km) who hit the streets of Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth, is one man –Loynes Jenkerson.”
Sport, especially road running, has shaped his life since his days at Lawson Brown High School in the 1950s. In the 1980s, Loynes and fellow club members staged a relay from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town to raise funds for wheelchairs for the disabled. Each runner completed 10km legs, finishing in only 56 hours. This effort led them to the Two Oceans Marathon, sponsored by SPAR — and marked the start of a remarkable 40-year relationship with the brand. Along the way, the team collected donations at SPAR outlets across
the country, always keeping the cause at the heart of their miles.
In 1995, Loynes secured a date with the Eastern Province Athletics Union and launched the first SPAR Women’s Challenge in the Eastern Cape. From a modest start of 287 participants, the event grew to over 14,000 athletes at its peak, becoming the largest road running event in the province. His meticulous planning ensured safety at every stage — from water points to traffic control — along the scenic Nelson Mandela Bay beachfront. Loynes often said: “SPAR has been good to us, and their sponsorship has made this race a success in Port Elizabeth.”
He also pioneered the SPAR Little Ladies Race, creating a space for mothers and daughters to share the joy of running together. For over 40 years, Loynes blended his love for running, his compassion for children, and his dedication to supporting charities for people living with disabilities. Always avoiding the spotlight, he worked tirelessly behind the scenes, embodying the spirit of a true SPAR brand ambassador. Now 84 years old and retired, his legacy continues to inspire.
Like his brother, Keith built a sporting career from an early age, representing the Eastern Province in athletics, soccer, and martial arts. Introduced to long-distance running by Loynes at the age of 30, he soon joined his brother on countless half, full, and ultramarathons, earning them the affectionate nickname in the press: “The Running Bro’s”.
In 1991, Keith became a SPAR Brand Ambassador in his own right, running solo from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town under the slogan “Running for Those Who Can’t”. His 800km journey planted the seed for an even greater dream; to run around the world, raising funds for The Heart Foundation and the physically disabled.
Keith took his first of 60 million steps on his 40,000km world run on 24 July 1991, running from Port Nolloth to Durban — a distance of 2,000km in only 39 days. Averaging 40km–50km a day, he pulled a three-wheel cart carrying his food, clothes, and sleeping kit, often resting under the stars or in roadside culverts. Always dressed in SPAR gear, he made sure every step told the story of hope.
Australia was next, with Keith and his wife, Joan, running 3,000 miles from Perth to Sydney, across the harsh Nullarbor Plain. Kangaroos shadowed their journey, while a ferry carried them to Tasmania, where they ran the full island. From there, they crossed
to the UK — running from John O’Groats to Land’s End — before tackling New Zealand’s North to South traverse (1,600km).
In 1997, Keith and Joan relocated to the United States, running 4,650km from San Francisco to New York. They settled there, continuing to participate in marathons and the LC Senior Games, where Keith medalled at age 65. A journalist summed it up: “Keith is going to do the equivalent of 444 Comrades, over 60 million steps or 40,000km, to complete his run around the world— dressed in SPAR gear.”
This extraordinary man happens to be my father. Together with his brother Loynes, the Jenkerson brothers carried SPAR across South Africa and beyond, proving that running can change lives and that loyalty, passion, and community upliftment can leave a legacy that spans generations.
What began in 2014 as a promising junior debut has become a decadelong journey of excellence. Today, Glenrose stands tall as the reigning SPAR Grand Prix Champion – but her path to the top wasn’t paved in gold. It took commitment, countless kilometres, and the belief that with every stride, she was not only chasing personal victory, but also inspiring a generation of women to rise.
“I’m so grateful for SPAR,” Glenrose reflects. “They’ve supported me in more ways than just race days. From funding to

encouragement – they’ve been there for every step.”
A Champion on the Track and in Her Community
Glenrose’s victories speak volumes. She holds the national 10km record (a blistering 31:12), shattered the SA marathon record with 2:22:22, and set course records in Tshwane and Joburg’s Absa Run Your City events –both at high altitude.
But beyond the stopwatch, she’s a role model. Training under the world-renowned
mentorship of Caster and Violet Semenya, Glenrose uplifts those around her, especially fellow female runners. Whether offering tips on technique or words of encouragement, she thrives not only for herself, but for others.
“SPAR doesn’t just host races,” says Caster Semenya. “They create spaces where women feel welcome, loved, and empowered. From sanitary products to groceries, to funding our dreams – they invest in the whole woman.”
Glenrose’s SPAR journey is marked with milestones; her first Grand Prix win in 2018, a podium finish in 2022, a gritty comeback in 2023, and ultimate glory in 2024. Her story proves that greatness isn’t built in a single season – it’s earned over time, with consistency, community, and courage.
As she celebrates a decade with the SPAR Grand Prix, Glenrose continues to thrive, running not only for medals, but for meaning. For the girls watching from the sidelines. For women fighting for visibility. For every South African dream fuelled by sweat, strength, and SPAR’s unwavering support.
