Commander’s Message By the time this issue reaches you, I’m confident spring will be well underway and the pace of activity for all of us will have picked up as it does this time of year. Some of you will have recently returned from overseas missions and I welcome you back and encourage you to take some time to relax and spend time with friends and family. For others, you may be getting ready to depart for whatever part of the world your Unit is headed. Spring and Summer is a time of change for many who might have postings, promotions or other career changes in their future. Whatever the future holds for you, remember that this is the guide to your community, and this Spring/Summer edition is filled with programs, services and activities for you and your family. The MFRC, PSP, and Health Promotion staff are great resources to help you and your family as you navigate the unique challenges of military life. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the hard work and support undertaken by those who volunteer in the community programs run by PSP and the MFRC, as well as in our chapels, schools and other community organizations that make our community so great. To all those who contribute their time volunteering, my sincere thanks. To all, whatever this new season brings for your family, I wish you all the best in 2018. Colonel J.P.S. McKenzie Base Commander 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton

Emergency Childcare Service (ECS) The MFRC can help CAF families who qualify, to meet unexpected and unique child care challenges with support in facilitating their short-term emergency child care requirements. Military families are encouraged to have a Family Care Plan (FCP); however, families may sometimes face situations where conditions of service in the Canadian Armed Forces prove too challenging for the FCP to accommodate; when this happens additional child care support may be available. The MFRC may subsidize a family’s child care request through direct child care services, expense reimbursement or through the coordination of independent child care services on a short-term basis. A military family may be eligible for up to 96 hours of subsidized child care, or in special circumstances, reimbursement for child care expenses.

Eligibility Emergency Child Care needs and eligibility are assessed on a case-by-case basis during times of emergency, absence, deployment, illness, injury or loss; including: • • • •

When CAF personnel are required to report for duty on short notice or are absent due to a military-related tasking, and neither their primary nor secondary child caregiver as identified in their Family Care Plan (FCP) is available to care for their children; When CAF personnel are absent due to a military-related tasking, and the family requires a period of respite from child care responsibilities for continued health and well-being; When CAF personnel require short-term temporary child care in order to secure essential necessities (e.g. search for housing and employment, etc.) when newly posted, up to a maximum of 3 months after posting; When CAF personnel or any of their family (including dependents of single serving members) are seriously ill/injured and participation at medical, mental health or social support service appointments is required, or respite from child care is necessary to aid in their recuperation; When CAF personnel or any of their immediate family (including dependents of single serving members) has died and the family needs support through the repatriation, funeral and bereavement process.

Give your child a head start on learning to swim. The Lifesaving Society Preschool program develops an appreciation and healthy respect for the water before these kids get in too deep. In our basic aquatic progressions we work to ensure 3 to 5-year olds become comfortable in the water and have fun acquiring and developing a foundation of water skills. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all Preschool levels. The Edmonton Garrison Fitness Centre offers the Lifesaving Society’s Preschool program for ages 3-5. Please register your children at your preferred program time and on the first day of lessons children will be divided into groups based on age, ability and level. Each group will have a separate instructor. Preschool 1: We encourage the parent to participate until their child lets them know they can do it themselves (thank you very much). These preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We’ll help them jump into chest deep water. They’ll float and glide on their front and back and learn to get their faces wet and blow bubbles underwater. Preschool 2: These preschoolers learn to jump into chest-deep water by themselves, and get in and get out wearing a lifejacket. They’ll submerge and exhale underwater. Wearing a lifejacket they’ll glide on their front and back. Preschool 3: These youngsters will try both jumping and a sideways entry into deep water while wearing a lifejacket. They’ll recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They’ll work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back. Preschool 4: Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They’ll do sideways entries and open their eyes underwater. They’ll master a short swim on their front wearing a lifejacket and gliding and kicking on their side. Preschool 5: These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a lifejacket and treading water for 10 sec. They’ll work on front and back crawl swims for 5 m, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick. Spring: April 3 to June 24 *(No Classes Victoria Day Weekend) Tuesday Thursday Saturday

We stress lots of in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. We incorporate Water Smart® education in all levels. The Edmonton Garrison Fitness Centre offers the Lifesaving Society’s Swimmer program for ages 6-12. Please register your children at your preferred program time and on the first day of lessons children will be divided into groups based on age, ability and level. They’ll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They’ll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back. Swimmer 2: These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They’ll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, swim 10 m on their front and back, and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4 x 5 m). Swimmer 3: These junior swimmers will dive and do in-water front somersaults and handstands. They’ll work on 15 m of front crawl, back crawl and 10 m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 15 m. Swimmer 4: These intermediate swimmers will swim 5 m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. Their new bag of tricks includes the completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard. They’ll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or back crawl interval training. Swimmer 5: These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. They’ll refine their front and back crawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 25 m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 15 m breaststroke. Swimmer 6: These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They’ll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they’ll complain about the 300 m workout.
