2020: RETHINKING OUR PRIORITIES?

A longstanding charter client of Fraser, a very creative gentleman, recently wrote to us to say that the last edition of FUSE had ignited his plans to make 2020 the year he finally found and purchased a yacht for his family. That play on words was, as you can imagine, music to our ears. For me, it also underlines a common theme the unusual events of this year have brought to the fore for all of us. As one long time yacht Owner recently commented, “shrouds don’t have pockets”, and life really is about making the most of it. This year has seen many of us reconsider our values, how we spend our time… and how much of that time is of quality. Our choices seem to be well illustrated by the data since March — an increased demand for ‘get-away’ residences in prime vacation locations around the world and a seemingly undiminished interest and activity around yachting. As you will see from our Market Intelligence feature, not only are yacht sales above 24m (79’) currently surpassing those of 2019, and pacing at over 26% above the annual average for the last 11 years, the demand for chartering, regardless of the logistics, is also remaining strong.

As any yacht Owner or charterer will tell you, there is something uniquely special about the time you spend with those you care for, on the water, on board a yacht. THE DRIVE TO OWN IS STRONGER THAN EVER A GLOBAL PANDEMIC HAS REFOCUSED THE PERSPECTIVE OF BUYERS AS THE TRUE BENEFITS OF YACHT OWNERSHIP RESONATE

hile 2020 has been an unpredictable year, as we continue through Q4 one fact is clear: the demand for yacht ownership has not faltered. As FUSE went to press, the number of pre-owned yachts sold since the start of 2020 stands over 4% higher than the comparable period in 2019. So far, over 325 yachts have been sold, to buyers who realised more strongly than ever the true benefits of owning their own vessel.

While digital marketing tools have partially countered constraints that travel restrictions might place on sales transactions, the charter market has naturally been more impacted by these restrictions and their evolution. However, one thing that has not diminished is demand — charter clients are as keen to escape on the water as ever, and in fact, 50% of Fraser clients went ahead with their charters this year as planned and enjoyed the benefits of time away more than ever. Of the remaining 50%, half of these postponed their charter to enjoy at a later date.

The 2020 brokerage yacht market as it now stands has outperformed the annual average for the last 11 years by over 26%. We are proud that more buyers turn to Fraser than any other provider, helping us outpace the market by over 30%. And while there had been early concerns that sellers might be forced to settle for lower offers amid predictions of panic-selling, prices are holding steady, with the total value of sales (based on last known Asking Price) now the same as 2019: €2.3 billion, again outperforming the 11-year average by 24%. Sellers are in the position to be able to wait for the right deal, thanks to a drive among buyers to secure a space to call their own in a safe, controlled environment.

Without long-haul options, charter clients turned closer to home. When Fraser invited charterers to re-discover regions in their own countries in our ‘Take a New Look at…’ campaign, we saw a surge in demand among US clients for New England and in Corsica/Italy/Croatia for Europeans. The Bahamas and Florida are now seeing significant interest for winter.

This drive has already been reflected in the recent increase in real estate purchases in sought-after rural locations in North America, Alpine regions and the South of France. Those looking for the same secure environment of a home, with the added benefit of the freedom to escape on their own terms wherever and whenever they choose, have realised a yacht is the answer — many taking that leap for the first time. This year so far, Fraser brokers have successfully closed over 30 sales for clients on yachts up to 75m (246’) in length. Five of those were sold within four weeks of listing them on the market, two of those were sold before they were even publicly announced as being for sale and almost 20% were to clients who, after years of reflection, decided 2020 was the perfect time to buy. “What I have been most excited to see during this period is those clients who have been wondering whether to buy for a while, make a positive decision to do it now, because more than ever, they understand the benefits of owning their own space on the water,” says Sales Broker Georges Bourgoignie. Georges has helped two clients take ownership of their next yacht in recent months, including one of two who bought without even stepping on board, in successful sales completed entirely through video calls, 3D walkthroughs and live digital tours. Indeed, with travel restrictions in place, more buyers than ever are using these digital resources in lieu of in-person tours, and Fraser’s web traffic has more than doubled on last year to over 240,000 unique visitors per month.

TRENDS TO WATCH — EXPLORER YACHTS

As buyers seek the ultimate social distancing tool, the trend for explorer yachts is expected to continue growing. These vessels are already seeing an increase in demand as more Owners today seek to capitalise on the unique capabilities of explorer yachts to go further and uncover the world’s greatest untouched nature and regions. Highly technologically developed and often built with ground-breaking new impact-reducing equipment, explorers such as YERSIN and EXUMA also tap in to the current focus, intensified by the pandemic, on addressing green issues and global warming. Many Owners are also expressing an interest in citizen science, offering their yachts for research into sustainability, marine life and more, for which explorers are already well equipped. s you have read in our Market Intelligence section, the demand for yacht ownership, far from waning, has actually grown since the start of 2020. And not only in Fraser’s sector of yachts over 24m (79’), but across the pleasure craft market. And for Fraser Brokers, the reasons why are plain to see. “This pandemic has brought home to people that spending time with friends and family is what matters in life and is ultimately what yachting offers,” says Josh Gulbranson. “It gives Owners the ability to enjoy life and the world we live in without the uncertainties that surround us today, in an environment they can control. A yacht is yours to use when, where and however you wish, and a very good method for having holidays together safely.” As well as being fully controllable once you are on board, as the Owner you are also in full control of the choices you make at the buying stage. As a buyer, you are able to choose the yacht that suits your needs and has everything you are looking for to be able to best enjoy your time on board, in terms of style, performance, layout, design, volume, engineering, onboard features, and of course price. And whereas a second or third home in a faraway location might be difficult to access in an era of travel restrictions, a yacht can be positioned where you choose, including close to home and easy to access at any moment you wish. “Particularly with yachts in the smaller size range, say from 80-130ft, they can be berthed locally to home, offering an easily accessible private holiday ‘destination’ without the need for international travel,” says Trevor Carroll.

This also means that the threshold from yacht to home is, for many Owners, becoming ever-more seamless, with life, work and schooling continuing as before when you step on board, with the added value of being able to explore and discover new places in your free time. “A yacht’s uses can go far beyond holidays,” says Jan Jaap Minnema. “Many Owners choose a yacht to be a ‘home from home’, with a full set up that enables you to continue to run your business and educate your children on board. A few small changes on board can reduce the devastating impact ocean pollution has had on marine life

raser has always been a fierce proponent of sustainability in yachting, and for the past four years, we have been a proud partner of Plastic Oceans. But in 2020, inspired by our forwardthinking yacht Owners, Fraser is driving the importance of preserving the environment we sail, live and work in even more strongly. Earlier this year, Fraser became the first-ever yacht company to sign the official National Pact for Energy Transition (Pacte National pour la Transition Énergétique) with the Monaco Government, pledging our commitment to the Principality’s energy transition effort. In summer 2020, we launched the Fraser Green Team, a dedicated in-house committee with one goal — to bring more green to the big blue. As a first step, we have published the Fraser Green Guide: inspiring ideas for Owners and Captains, from simple initiatives with no extra investment to far-reaching innovative technical solutions, which can be implemented on board to reduce a yacht’s impact on the environment. So what are yacht Owners doing, and what can you do, to make that world of difference? Carbon offsetting offers you the choice to offset each bunker, all flights, land and sea transfers or accommodation emissions, by donating funds to carbon dioxide-reducing projects from reforesting to wind farms. As well as helping offset your yacht’s footprint, it can help guests and charterers feel more reassured about spending their quality time on board your yacht. It is already successfully in place on board Fraser yachts including WHEELS and VISTA BLUE, as well as for all Fraser’s corporate travel. And it is less expensive than you may think: the Fraser Green Team can advise further. Almost 8 million tonnes of plastic leak into the ocean every year, taking hundreds of years to break down. Yet it is simple to eliminate single-use plastics on board and replace them with sustainable alternatives. Replace plastic water bottles with re-usable bottles made from sustainable materials and refill with filtered water. Replace plastic straws with alternatives in metal, bamboo or rice. Use refillable complimentary toiletries, provide material shopping bags on board for crew and guests and encourage your crew to sign the Clear Ocean Pact. Beyond plastics, you can easily prevent damage to marine life by opting for toxin-free, microplastic-free products for laundry, cleaning and sun protection. Most yacht chefs already source local produce, reducing their carbon footprint, but for further reduction of food waste on board, encourage your chefs to create menu plans according to destination, paying attention to the sustainability index of the fish, and incorporating as many vegetables as possible. (When not possible due to guest preferences, this can be applied to crew menus.) Any food waste can be transformed into grey water using a variety of recommended onboard systems. Electricity and water can be saved on board, for example by reducing the frequency of laundry and installing motion sensor lighting. Similarly, when guest and Owner areas are not in use, non-essential equipment and systems can be closed down. Reducing fuel consumption does not necessarily require significant changes on board: it can be about being flexible and travelling in the optimal sea conditions to reduce drag or choosing a betterquality fuel, which Fraser Management can advise on. Electric tenders and toys can be brought on board, and for the yacht itself, motor noise and vibration reduction can be optimised, with the help of the Fraser Technical Department.
