There are still more and more people coming to yachts and yachting today than ever before. New and experienced yacht Charterers and Owners alike are continuing to step on board a whole new world of experiences enjoyed with family and friends – a trend unpacked in the data discussed hereafter. As the market grows and continues to attract new audiences, there is much to enjoy for all parties involved, whether you are interested in chartering or owning the experience, selling, or even building your own yacht.
The desire to enjoy a vacation on board a yacht continues to be strong, offering unparalleled experiences for both Owners and Charterers. Surely linked to a combination of the ‘Covid effect’ and a reported 10-year drop in the average age of Fraser’s customers, Fraser Charter Brokers are handling more than double the number of enquiries and bookings at this point in the year than any year prior. Interestingly, 2022 is seeing longer charters – averaging 8.5 days – and bookings seeking to accommodate larger groups. Fraser Brokers and Charter Managers nevertheless strongly recommend booking ahead of time to secure your preferred dates and yacht to avoid missing out on your desired experience.
Following the experiences enjoyed in the summer months, it is expected and already quite prevalent that demand will be just as high for the upcoming winter season. While summer 2022 saw a
large segment of bookings in the Western Mediterranean – 56% in 2022 vs. 28% in 2021 – now is the time to start planning for that winter escape, particularly in destinations such as the Bahamas, Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Antarctica, Australasia and Costa Rica. The latter now notably allows luxury charter yachts over 24M (79’) to legally charter and remain for an entire year; the result of longstanding and passionate work undertaken by the Costa Rica Marina Association in collaboration with Fraser.
Rise in charter demand is also a reflection of the huge increase and impact social media has had in terms of yacht marketing. Making use of social platforms to offer a personalised insider look into the yachts and the unique experience each one offers, yachts for sale and for charter are more on the radar than ever before and to a much broader audience. Fraser, for example, saw 31.1M views across social channels in June 2022; more than triple that of the 8.5M recorded just a month prior – still a significant number. Indeed, Facebook and Instagram are leading the way in driving new enquiries through the Fraser website as people discover the fleet and the yachting experience, sometimes for the first time, through these social platforms.
A curated selection of yachts currently for charter can be found in the second section of this issue of FUSE, starting on page 41. Contact your Fraser Broker today to find out how we can help you step aboard a whole new world.
The market data shows that 40% of those who charter regularly eventually decide they want to keep their clothes on board more permanently and choose to take the next step to buy their own yacht. It comes as no surprise then, that along with a strong demand for charter comes a subsequent demand for buying as yacht enthusiasts recognise the benefits of ownership. Following the high demand in 2020 and 2021 due to the ‘Covid effect’, there is certainly less product available on the market. Demand, however, is still above normal, with yacht sales up by +56% on 2020.
In the same fashion, demand for new builds has also skyrocketed, with most shipyards booked up to 2025, even 2026 and beyond for larger yachts. This lack of availability has also notably led to a boost in the refit market for pre-owned yachts. If you don’t want to wait for a new build, get in touch with your Fraser Broker as there is still a lot on offer to start enjoying your yachting experience sooner rather than later.
While worldwide sales dropped slightly in June 2022 compared to the previous record-breaking year, sales this year are up +72% on the average for the same period over the past 13 years. While Fraser follows this trend in sales, it is also a record year so far in terms of value. Although 2021 was Fraser’s best year yet, the first six months of 2022 have already seen a +136% increase in value and up +197% on the company's 13-year average.
If you are considering selling your yacht, now is certainly a good time to do so. The greatest activity in pre-owned sales is in the 2440M/79’-130’ segment, accounting for 82% of sales when analysing the market over the past two years. That is not to say that the 40M+ segment is inactive but represents a smaller segment of the market than the 24-40M segment. In fact, Fraser performs in the Top 3 in every size segment and held 44% of market share in the 85M+ segment in the past 18 months. Overall, Fraser remains number one in value of yachts sold, whether that’s in deals representing the seller (64% since 2021) or representing the buyer (69%).
Fraser sales in 2022 so far account for almost a quarter of the total market value, a testament to the unique benefits to draw from working with experienced Brokers who are knowledgeable about the market and can position your yacht within it to attract the right buyer, wherever it sits on the size scale from 24M to 100M+ (79’ to +328’).

Built in 1985 in a golden era when space was king, 45M/148’ CURIOSITY is a yacht for the ages. Acquired by the Moretti family two years previously, 2021 was the year father and daughter team, Giorgio and Ginevra got to see the fruits of their inspiration, input and expertise when CURIOSITY finally completed her two-year refit. She emerged 4M/13’ longer with a reimagined 70s-inspired interior that possesses all the hallmarks of the family’s authentic Italian style, and unequivocally charter ready. With a collection of new additions that bring a modern twist to the yacht’s retro appeal, CURIOSITY hit the 2022 summer season ready to make waves as part of Fraser’s global charter fleet.
It's no coincidence that the Nicolini-built yacht now ticks all the boxes for even the most discerning of charter guests. Giorgio Moretti took his experience developing management systems for the Italian navy and applied it to yachting. His daughter, Ginevra, took inspiration from her time immersed in New York’s fashion scene and reimagined the interior. Together, the pair combined their passion and skill to create a yacht with universal appeal that reflects the Moretti family’s enthusiasm for life.
“We own a beautiful hotel in Florence, Italy. The building is 15th century but inside it houses advanced technology,” says Giorgio. “It strikes the right balance between original detail and modern equipment, and we wanted to achieve the same result with CURIOSITY.”
CURIOSITY’s new additions include a seven-seater hot tub pool on the upper deck. The original sky lounge is converted into a VIP stateroom, providing an additional sixth guest suite with direct access to an exterior lounge. The shape of the boat has transformed, too. The once vertical bow now slopes at a gentle 40-degree angle, while the extension paved the way for an entirely new beach club at the stern, equipped with all-new tenders and toys. All onboard machinery has been replaced or overhauled.
“I didn’t want to change the ambience as I believe CURIOSITY hails from the best period in yachting,” Giorgio says, “but in my opinion, we corrected a few ‘mistakes’ made to the original design.”
While Giorgio focused on exterior design amends that play to the yacht’s strengths, Ginevra took on the immaculate interior styling that epitomises the family’s ‘Made in Italy’ signature. “The first time I saw CURIOSITY, I was struck by how different her interior was,” says Ginevra. “The use of blonde wood and rich leathers felt reminiscent of Florentine artisanry, so I wanted to preserve and respect what we found while giving it a refresh.”
Selecting only natural fibres and materials that bring chic glamour, such as rich silks, velvets, woods and leather, Ginevra’s “lean approach” celebrates the open-plan layout placing comfort at the fore. A curated selection of quintessentially Italian brands, such as Milan-based Dedar, are mixed with antique furnishings from Portofino and Florence. Reading nooks and coffee corners are discovered around every curve. “As a family, we relish ‘salotto’ – the passing of time together in a relaxed environment – and we put this energy into CURIOSITY,” she says.
The enjoyment of food features large, with an upper deck sushi bar, a stage kitchen on the sun deck – creatively named the ‘Riot Flame deck’ for its adaptative ability to host wild parties as well as holistic activities – and long lingering al fresco lunches on the main deck aft. The family’s Italian heritage pervades every pore.
“We lunch together, we dance together and talk a lot,” laughs Ginevra. “For us, coffee time is sacred, and I wanted to express our Italian style throughout.”
At the heart of the offering is the ceramic dinnerware designed by Ginevra and her grandmother. “I designed the patterns and shapes, and my grandmother, having worked for 50 years at Macy’s in New York, knew about the production process and what was needed. The entire collection is handmade in the north of Italy.”
Almost as important as the design is the consideration for service. The ten crew now have a well-polished turnaround time between charters of just four hours, and are adept at themed charters, from wellnessled yoga sessions on the aft deck to workouts on the sundeck, as well as gastronomic feasts at the hands of the Italian chef.
Family-friendly details that make life on board easier are also noted. Two exterior tables allow for adults and children to dine separately,
while partition sliding doors in the main salon divide the television area from the formal dining space.
“All the yachts that my father and I viewed in Monte Carlo were showy and forced a dominant design on guests,” says Ginevra. “We took a maximalist approach to details, but placed our guests’ needs at the centre of the design.”
Less than a year on the charter market and CURIOSITY has already become a coveted film star, featuring in an upcoming HBO series. Away from cameras, the yacht is a lesson in serenity and wellbeing.
“It's always been a privilege for us to enjoy the beautiful sea,” says Ginevra. “As children, we spent time on our Italian shores, enjoying a modest but elegant existence. For me, that epitomises the curiosity of life, and is what I feel CURIOSITY encapsulates. Simple, refined, comfortable.”

CARINTHIA VII is a milestone in the yachting history of Lürssen shipyard and, twenty years later, remains an outstanding example of their quality craftsmanship, engineering, and styling. In 2002, her launch was acclaimed, attracting industry and media attention alike to both her shipyard and her designer, Tim Heywood. To this day, only a few glimpses of her interior have ever been published. CARINTHIA VII remains a secret gem in any port she enters, continuing to attract attention wherever she goes.
Aptly named PROJECT FABERGE whilst under construction, she has been luxuriously designed to perfection and is full of surprises much like the prized egg she was initially named after. Twenty years later, she comes to the market in immaculate condition, a true testament to the timelessness of her design, and the excellence of her build and management. She offers to a new Owner the unmatched opportunity to expand upon her legacy, by personalising her to their own taste and requirements.
Her Captain for the past 10 years, Josef Husmann, confided that while CARINTHIA VII is certainly one-of-a-kind, “she is also a good friend.” CARINTHIA VII has travelled extensively around the Mediterranean, the Bahamas, Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, Seychelles, and through the Suez and Corinth Canals among many more destinations. Captain Josef shares that out of all his preferred yacht features, one that makes an incredible difference is CARINTHIA VII's stainless-steel anchor and 220M (721'09") of chain that allow her to anchor in depths of up to 85M (278'10"); in spots where most other yachts could only dream of being.
Lürssen engineered and built CARINTHIA VII to the comparable standard of a fast military vessel, making her significantly more powerful than many other yachts in her range and exceptionally reliable. From keel to sundeck, she is built of steel, offering a volume of 3,600 gross tons across six decks. Her weight, shape and width allow for outstanding natural stability. CARINTHIA VII has a retractable stern-thruster, particularly useful for manoeuvring in ports — a godsend in areas such as the old port of Mykonos — and retractable stabilisers for added comfort whilst in navigation or at anchor.
Since her delivery, very few people have had the privilege of stepping on board the highly acclaimed and mysterious 97.2M/318'11" CARINTHIA VII.
Powered by four engines generating 10,060 horsepower each — the same engine blocks that equipped half the fleet of the US Coast Guard, along with Mercedes’ generators you probably won’t see in any other yacht’s engine room — she is a real powerhouse, able to reach a top speed of 25 knots and comfortably cruise at 18 knots. What her underwater main engine exhausts allow are minimal noise levels. Indeed, even when cruising around 18 to 20 knots, the noise levels in the guest area are incredibly quiet, meaning guests can enjoy their voyage in exceptional comfort and calm.
The combination of Lürssen’s engineering with Heywood’s elegant design achieves the captivating result that is CARINTHIA VII. Heywood made use of some ingenious visual techniques to achieve her commanding profile, recognisable by the sheer lines that draw the eye from bow to stern and her deep blue hull colour, named “Carinthia Blue” in her honour, by paint manufacturer Awlgrip.
Another striking feature is her remarkably large windows, “maybe even the largest windows on a yacht at that time”, Heywood notes, a decision “driven by the guest cabins being on the main deck.” From the outside, she appears as one continuous hull with no windows; a visual technique created by darkened windows with dark frames only noticeable when close up. From the interior, though, her large windows and glass bulwarks ensure guests benefit from a tremendous amount of light and unobstructed views.
Designed with family and friends in mind, CARINTHIA VII accommodates up to 14 guests in eight staterooms with easy access throughout the yacht facilitated by a dedicated guest elevator. Up to 26 crew operate the yacht with discreet Owner and guest service assured through intelligent layout flows and a separate crew elevator serving five decks.
Clockwise,, 3.5cm thick and with seamless grain, the vast expanse of teak decks throughout CARINTHIA VII are a rare sight today
CARINTHIA VII's chic, fully equipped spa on the water is a haven for relaxation
Tim Heywood’s favourite place on board? “The Skydeck, which is grand and spacious and really is wonderful, especially when you’re cruising with a gentle breeze.”
Among CARINTHIA VII’s surprises is her Chantilly oak parquet, sourced from an 18th century Austrian monastery and carefully restored
At 97M/318’ with a 16M/54' beam, CARINTHIA VII boasts outstanding volumes, both in the interior (825m²/8,880 sq ft) and exterior (1,175m²/12,647 sq ft). In fact, anywhere you go on board, you can walk side by side, be it down her striking corridor from the salon to the dining room or jogging around the exterior decks with your coach.
Her interior, elegant and intimate, is finished to perfection with fittings and panelling by Vedder, a name synonymous with high-end traditional artistry and state-of-the-art marquetery. Lavish in her proportions, CARINTHIA VII offers many spaces for guests to enjoy as well as the more private Owner’s deck complete with a salon, office, significant walk-in closet, beauty room, VIP cabin, and forward facing Master Stateroom with ensuite, centre line bed and 180 degree views. With six further staterooms on the main deck, a chic spa with sauna, Hammam and sea terrace on the lower deck, sundeck hot tub, tenders including a Limo-tender speed boat and beach landing tender, as well as a variety of toys, there is much for guests of all ages to enjoy. Her spacious garages house all tenders available for the whole family to travel to and from the vessel in comfort and style. She can also welcome guests on board in the most efficient yet sleek manner, thanks to her touch and go helipad.
The enduring appeal of CARINTHIA VII rests in Tim Heywood’s masterly design and layout paired with the quality of her Lürssen pedigree and extraordinary performance package; a marriage of space and power unmatched on the market today. Indeed, Heywood notes that following CARINTHIA VII, “several yachts were consequently designed and built that owe their DNA to her.” Superbly maintained by her crew, — many of whom have been on board for 20 years — she is VAT paid and has just completed her 20-year DNV class surveys in April 2022.
If you are interested in writing her next chapter, in sharing and enjoying the art and the excellence that is CARINTHIA VII, contact Fraser Brokers Antoine X Larricq or Stuart Larsen.
