Year-Round, Whatever The Weather
Devon’s beautiful English Riviera has a renowned micro climate and a sheltered bay, great for outdoor fun all year round. If the weather should turn, then the area has probably the biggest and most exciting collection of indoor and year-round paid for and free attractions and activities you could find.
Take a fascinating guided tour at Kent’s Cavern, one of Europe’s top prehistoric caves and a gateway site to the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark. At Bygones in Babbacombe, you can see, smell and hear the bustle of history with an indoor, life-size Victorian street. Brixham Heritage Museum explores the town’s maritime and fishing heritage. 800-year-old Torre Abbey, just off Torquay’s seafront, is a must-visit; rich with history – and tropical glasshouses to bask in all year round!
A trip on the multi award-winning Dartmouth Steam Railway’s steam train is one of the most popular things to do on the English Riviera. Sit back in vintage style and enjoy the spectacular beach and estuary views unwinding beside you.
A stroll on one of the English Riviera’s many award-winning beaches or around Cockington Court and Village, with its artisan craft studios, is wonderful any time of the year, but the area has plenty of indoor activities too. Visit one of our leisure centres to swim and play sports, or pamper yourself at a luxury hotel spa How about exercising the ‘little grey cells’ at escape rooms in both Torquay and Paignton?

Agatha Christie’s English Riviera
Agatha Christie, Queen of Crime and the world’s best-selling novelist, was born in Torquay. She maintained close links with the English Riviera throughout her life. The area provided inspiration for many of the characters, plots and locations in her novels.
Put your detective hat on and pick up a free Agatha Christie Mile… and More trail map from the English Riviera Visitor Information Centre on Torquay harbourside. It takes you on an easy, self-guided walk around the seafront, exploring Agatha’s lifetime here, and includes a stop at the Agatha Christie memorial bust, just behind the Visitor Centre.
The novelist loved being near the sea and was a keen swimmer. Follow in her (wet) footsteps by visiting some of her favourite spots at Beacon Cove, just off Torquay Harbour, and Elberry Cove. This beautiful pebbly beach, between Paignton and Brixham, features in Christie’s The ABC Murders.
The Agatha Christie Gallery at Torquay Museum has a collection of the author’s personal effects, plus film and TV memorabilia including Poirot’s swan-headed walking stick (on loan from David Suchet) from the ITV series.
The English Riviera hosts the Agatha Christie Festival in midSeptember every year, packed full of fun and interesting events.
Finally, don’t miss Greenway House and Gardens, on the Dart Estuary. Greenway was Agatha Christie’s beloved holiday home and she called it ‘the loveliest place in the world’. Spend a little time here and you will understand why visitors return time and again to this magical National Trust property.

Naturally Inspiring Walking
Walking and the South West Coast Path
Ask walkers why they love the English Riviera and they will tell you tales of undulating coastal footpaths, secluded coves, spectacular views and naturally inspiring cliffs and landscapes.
The English Riviera has 22 miles of breathtakingly beautiful, dogfriendly coastline to explore by way of the South West Coast Path. It’s all within easy reach of amenities but a world away for the heart and mind. The English Riviera Visitor Information Centre at Torquay Harbour has maps and guides for sale, and is an official Stamping Point for the SWCP Passport.
The coast path is easily divided into sections, short or long. See why the area is called the English Riviera by enjoying the views from Torquay Harbour to Meadfoot Beach (1.5 miles). A longer option is Goodrington Sands to Brixham Harbour, a 4-mile route through wooded coastal path, stopping at some stunning coves on the way.
Here on the English Riviera, you are never far from the sea. The coast path isn’t the only option for walkers though. The area has several mature woodlands such as Scadson Woods and Brunel Woods, housing an array of wildlife and with miles of tranquil footpaths. Cooling on a hot summer’s day (perfect for dog-owners), rich with colour in autumn, the English Riviera’s woodland is its hidden secret, just waiting to be explored at any time of the year.
If you love walking as much as we do, stay during the English Riviera Walking Festival, held twice-yearly in spring and autumn, for inspiring, expertly-guides tours.

Dog
Friendly
English Riviera
In South Devon we like to extend a warm welcome to all our visitors, including our four-legged guests. That is why you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly places during your visit to the English Riviera.
We know that dogs enjoy playing in the sand as much as the kids do, so beaches across the English Riviera are open to dogs from 1st October to 30th April. During the summer months there are plenty of beaches that allow dogs including Babbacombe Beach, Livermead Beach in Torquay, Goodrington Sands North in Paignton, Fishcombe Cove in Brixham, as well as other sandy destinations around the Bay. Look out for our two ‘Dog Friendly’ icons in this directory’s beach listings to help you decide where to visit – you’ll be spoilt for choice!
We are a dog-loving part of the world so you won’t have any difficulty getting around the English Riviera. We recommend checking ahead, but most means of transport, including ferries and boat trips, will welcome well-behaved dogs on a lead. Similarly, many cafés and restaurants are dog-friendly and a lot have outside areas for you and your dog to sit and watch the world go by.
Cockington Country Park is an enjoyable walk from Torquay seafront, and is a popular location for dog walking and a play space for the whole family to enjoy. The Parks, Gardens, Woodland and Nature section of this directory includes lots more dog-friendly open spaces for you to explore with canine companions.

Reach Outdoors
English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark: One of Earth’s Extraordinary Places
The English Riviera’s breath-taking landscape has designated UNESCO Global Geopark status, one of only eight in the UK.
A Geopark is an area of globally recognised, unique geological interest, designated by UNESCO - a place where you can touch a very special part of the Earth’s story. The English Riviera is a place where earth and sea come together. The 22 miles of coast have been shaped by nature, formed millions of years ago at the bottom of a warm tropical sea and then scorched by the equatorial sun. Immerse yourself within this extraordinary terrain and allow your body and spirit to reset and recharge.
One of the best ways to experience the English Riviera Global Geopark is from the sea. Take a boat trip or cruise or walk along the South West Coast Path, and see the Devonian limestone headlands and the red Permian cliffs. Get a closer look by kayaking or coasteering with Reach Outdoors, or back on dry land you can uncover more at Kents Cavern and at our local museums. The Geoplay Park on Paignton’s seafront is a children’s play area with a difference. Themed around the amazing geological story of the English Riviera it provides free entertainment for the whole family.
Look out for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark logo in this directory’s listings. For more information, please visit englishrivierageopark.org.uk
