Story Telling A Tradition That Endures: A Love of Words Over the past century, the artform of storytelling has served many functions in Ireland entertainment, communication, and the maintenance of memory and historical record that escaped the privilege of more formal preservation.

The act of storytelling itself requires the wearing of a few hats: the recall of a canon of stories and their context; the command of a crowd and the ability to interact and improvise; the oratory ability to lend gravitas and authority to your words as a bearer of tradition and the lived experience of others.

“You’re telling a story, you’re looking at an audience, and you see a face, a face, a face.

You have to play the story to the faces in front of you, thinking always, in my case at least, of the person who told me that story, with respect for that person.

“This is their story, and I am telling it in memory of that person. I owe it to that person to keep their memory alive.

“That story is that person’s gravestone.”

Attitude To Story Telling The Coast - Residents will learn and be able to form their stories by the changing coastal environments. The intention is for residents to share their lives before beginning their stay.

The heart of the facility provides a space where guests can share with zero judgement. There are also smaller story telling spaces for more inimate sharing and video diary rooms to record the progress of the residents’ stay.

When at the end of their journey, guests are invitied to share new stories in the heart of the facility, with the envision of a new outlook on life.

Location Attitude To The Building This facility intended for exhausted from experience a

is inspired by rehabilitation. It is designed and city dwellers in Ireland who are overworked and their daily lives. This is a place where people can change of scenery and closer with the outdoors.

As the centre is surrounded by rich coastal elements such as: rocky coastlines, cliff faces and strands, residents are encouraged to spend their time outdoors. During the winter months, the facility is designed to take advantaged of the cuvironment outside carry the aspects of the coastline indoors.

The heart of the building is the most important area for storytelling. A gathering point, a meeting point, a place to think and develope ideas.

Why Concrete Frame?

Reduction in Energy Use - Up to 9% of total annual energy costs could be saved through the use of the thermal mass of cast-in-place concrete. When energy use is reduced, there is definitely going to be a reduction in costs of building and when there is a reduction in the use of energy, there is bound to be a reduction in the life cycle impact and life-cycle cost of the structure. This implies that a concrete structure will exhibit a better life cycle analysis when compared to steel.

Limitless range of shape - Reinforced concrete can be molded into a limitless range of shapes. It is a great material for construction of artistic architectural designs such as arcs and domes. The material is fluid in the beginning while the steel frame structure is designed as a framework for the final design.

Ability to resist high-stress environments - Reinforced concrete was designed to meet the performance flaws of plain concrete, especially high-stress environment. Concrete is one of the best construction materials widely known for its sturdiness and durability.

The southern facade has majorty floor to ceiling glass windows and doors to encourage solar gain, especially in the winter months. The southern face of the building incorporates cantilever overhangs which shelter the lower spaces from the harsh summer months sun.

The building is designed with a green roof construction to provide natural insulation through the vegetation, creating an urban heat island.

Direct access from upper green space on to Clogher Strand. Building to feature materials of the coastline: Living walls, stone, plaster board to represent sand and water features and floor to ceiling windows and doors on to beach.

Building location is sheltered from western peninsula which protects again harsh winds as the site can fairly exposed to the south.

Initial ideas of playing with the idea of a coastal storytelling centre, incorporating my attitude to the building and story Attitude - For the people who are over worked and need an escape, the centre will accept all walks of life. The centre is designe around the idea of a retreat and a mental rehabilitation centre. An informal setting which would be opposite to their typical work space.

Video Diary Rooms - A creative time capsule for storytelling, the idea is for people staying at the centre to record stories when they arrive/during their stay and at the end. These will serve as a record of their experience at and display how the coast and the centre has helped them recover.

Non abrasive design to the environment around it. Structure/ seating feature will blend with grounds surrounding it or be sunken in to leave little effect on area.

Simple concrete or wood decking terrace will be a gateway directly onto the sand of the beach in front. Also can be used for more intimate storytelling experiences for guests.

The mass model I created was to display proportions of the buildings to the landscape around. Also to display how the natural daylight affects the facades of the buildings.

The location of the buildings is situated on a cliff off the Clogher Strand. The location allows for 360 degree views of the coastal enevironment and the Dingle Peninsula mountains.

Method of construction in which the complex formwork for the concrete vaults will be manufactured on site.

The large assembly hall would have a similar capacity as the large storytelling space. I want to incorporate high ceilings to allow the space to feel open and not closed in like desks in an office building.

Initial Designs

Musholm Rehabilitation Centre, Korsor, Denmark - AART Architects

Designed as a circular building, the holiday homes adapt to the landscape and existing buildings and at the same time, the circular gesture provides shelter in the open landscape and accentuates a sense of community.

Will serve around 120 students. Comprising the school, dormitory and utility buildings, the length of each vault is adapted to accommodate the school’s program.

At the center of the largest cluster of vaults, a courtyard provides a circulation space and play area. The ends of the vaults cantilever beyond the building envelope to extend the teaching environment outdoors and to protect the interior from solar gain.

The interaction with the scenic surroundings is underlined by the consistent use of wood. For instance, the facades on the hall and holiday homes are covered with larch wood, while the floors, walls and ceiling in the hall are covered with ash wood.

What I am borrowing from this precedent is the accomodation layout. Rooms are side by side with a corridor to the rear which connects all the rooms together. Each room also has private terrace space but my scheme will be semiprivate dividers as I want to feel comfortable with knowing their neighbours.

It was important to include natural elements of the environment around the centre into the building which inspired me to want to use rammed earth construction. As the building would be concrete frame, the rammed earth walls would not be structural but simply partition walls In the initial design development, figure out the cantilever structure was very important. I found that doing a steel frame structure would be the lightest material but that would transform the centre into a hybrid construction of steel and concrete frame.

After reviews and meeting with my tutors, it was advised that using the steel frame system would be over enginerring the building and simply creating a thicker and more reinforced concrete walls and floors would solve my issue of the cantilever areas.

Investigating the steel frame was a very valuable study as I was able to understand how the system works and the connections needed to create a building of that nature.

Design Development

Technical structure is normally a weak stop for myself so I wanted to work with the tutors to improve my abilities in the developing the section of the building. From the initial designing I incorporated parapets into my designs and proper thicknesses of insulation, as well as increasing my ceiling heights to have HVAC hidden in the dropped ceiling.

Initial Model Studies

Investigating the cantilever structure in my building scheme, I created a 1:20 model to show how a steel frame cantilver would functioin. From many precedants I researched, many used a cross bracing method which I showed in my sketches and model.

Further into my building inestigations, I found that doing a thicker reinforced concrete frame for the cantielver would be more cohesive with the rest of the building but doing an investigation into the steel frame was very valuable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop as it got me to think outside of the box a bit. How I would architecturally present a food and what kind of information does that contain. It was also fascinating seeing the other foods and methods of presentation from other students across the world, definately an eye opening experience and I was looking forward to the remainder of the UoU workshops.

Reflection: For the following workshop we were tasked with investigating a food of our choice, but specifically a food from our culture or place of birth. It was very interesting to look into food in an architectural way, which was very new to myself and many others. I was able to use AutoCAD to create the plan and section views through my food which was actually quite a challenge to begin with.

Sustainability: Cultervating Mushrooms

Hot Cross Buns are a traditional dish to Bermuda which is eaten using during Easter time but also can be enjoy year round or especially on holidays. Originating from a religious background, Hot Cross Buns have been and are still enjoyed by people who are involved in and not involved in Bermuda’s spiritual society. The large staple being the white cross on the top of the bun representing from the Bible, the cross that Jesus died on during his crucifixion.

Reflection: Following the previous workshop, thiz was the first activety we were able to work as a collective with other students across Europe.

The task was the find a food that we could use to design a structure. Some members of the group had already researched mushrooms and thus we wanted to continue with the information they passed on to us.

Description:

This infinite place is located on the eastern end of the island of Bermuda, just outside of the old

town of St. George’s, which used to be the capital of Bermuda until Hamilton City become the main port of the island. The structure is a large open space, as seen in the photos, with the main structure of the place still in tact. In 1874, a storm that ravaged Bermuda damaged the original church known as St. Peters. The damages were beyond repair, and construction began on this new, massive stone church designed by Scottish Architect William Hey. The immense stone walls were inspired by the Gothic Revival architecture of the Mid 19th Century, and it was a complete contradiction to the wood post and palmetto leaves that had been used to build it’s predecessor. Disagreement within the Anglican community and financial struggles continually delayed progress. Many community members felt it was more important to restore St. Peters Church, since it had been built by the first settlers. The new church was eventually abandoned in conflict. The half-built stone structure sat idly until 1926, when a hurricane damaged much of it.

This workshop began by choosing a place of interest that could become an ‘infinite place’ such as one that can be used by multiple people within a community. I decided to choose The Unfinished Church in St. Georges, Bermuda as it is currently abandoned and posed an appropriate place to bridge a gap beween surrounding communities and the rest of the town of St. Georges.

As another person on the workshop had a similar concept of transforming a church, we decided to group together and complete the final image. We chose to form a place that integrated community focus, local art and sculpture, social spaces and food stalls for local business.

The project was interesting as it allowed me to see places differently and understand how the change of places can benefit people and communities. I enjoyed seeing the other transformation that other students did around the world. The task went well as it allowed me to work on my photoshopping, indesigning and collage skills.

In the group we wanted to combine our similar ideas into one. The overall idea is a cultural/ social space for the community. The venues can be used for multiple purposes which is why each of the windows in the abandoned church displays a different activity, ranging from sculpture displays to live performances and local food stalls, etc. We even wanted to include street performers outside with lights and crowds. Obviously this is not including the effects of COVID-19 but outside of that, this is what we would expect the venue to look like and function as such.

For this workshop I was tasked with observing the pathway from my home to the nearest bus stop off of Gloucester Road, from the perspective of a person in a wheelchair.

START

There’s an issue further up the alley where there’s a step out for the side entrance of a house. This reduces the alley to 84 cm which will still allow passage.

Similar to the previous frames, a slope down to the road level should be used here to allow for easy use by people in wheelchairs.

Step down can cause accidents and is overall not safe for the avatar.

Just outside of the alley is a stepdown for a driveway which should be properly slopped in order to create a smooth transition for wheelchair accessibility.

Not many issues with this section of the map. There is a bike rack to the rigth of the path which could cause if there’s a lot of traffic an people are trying to move in and out of the area quickly.

This junction here is a road crossing which is dangerous because vehicles park on the yellow lines where they should not.

There needs to be a crosswalk to allow for safe passing across the road and not create blind corners.

There is not a crossing in this area of the town which means it is difficult to cross here especially with traffic.

A zebra-crossing should be placed here with traffic lights to allow easy passage across the street.

Again, this junction has the same issue has number 04 where there is not a proper crossing and slope down to allow people in wheelchairs to move safely.

Vehicles also need to stop parking over the yellow lines making it hard to see.

No major issues in this section for the avatar. I would only suggest creating a bay for the bus to be able to pull into instead of creating traffic when stopping to pick up passengers. There’s enough sidewalk to create one and it would benefit traffic flow.

During this activity I wanted to capture the route photographically. I also took these photos from a lower viewing angle to see the point of view from a person in a chair. I noticed the many hazards in the path for someone in a wheelchair. Clear observations from the photographs were bumpy sidewalks, obstructed views and large amounts of vehicles as well as little ramps to allow for wheelchairs to get across the road, plus no proper cross walks.

There’s an issue where at the lamp post and the overhanging bush, the sidewalk narrows to 72cm which is a bit too narrow to move comfortable through.

This junction is very dangerous as you have vehicles coming from 3 different directions.

Zebra-crossings should be used here or create speed bumps to slow vehicles down throughout the area.

The task helped me to be more aware of these designs when planning streets. Certain areas can be unsafe for specific individuals and as an architecture and planning it is important to incorporate these aspects to make people feel included.

DESCRIPTION: This is the path which the eldery man in a wheelchair takes to get to the bus stop. The route has a few flaws which makes his journey diffcult every time. I’ve recorded this issues and noted how they can be improved to make his journey better. This Photographic Mapping is a compilation of the photos of the journey with the highlighted path. I thought doing this created an exciting and distorted feel to the map but also showed that it’s still a journey which some one times daily to go to work, shops, or other travel destinations.

FIREPLACE COVID-19 SAFE PUB HUT

Elements of Architecture for The Confinment Reflection: Throughtout the workshop we investigated the different places that people would feel unsafe due to the effects of covid-19 pandemic.

The main inspiration of this concept was to create a socialble place that people can also be socially distant and safe. The fire in the middle was to serve as a heat and allow the structure to remain open to the elements but still keep people inside warm and comfortable. The individuals would also be seperated by protective glass so theey can still be seen by each other.

This workshop was very valuable as it is very current to today’s issues. As wells I was able to demostrate and practive my skills with shotoshop creating the section image.

Symbolism

of The

Fireplace

Fireplaces have a long, rich history that dates back to the earliest dwellings. Once, they were essential for safe, comfortable living—they provided the heat and light needed to protect against the coldness of the season and the dangers of the night. Then, they evolved into practical living applications—heating our homes and providing a focal point in social settings. Today, they’re more of an aesthetic element than anything else, but that doesn’t make them any less important!

In some early cultures, the fireplace was seen as the “hole” in your home. This was a place where darkness or bad energy could flow in, even when doors and windows were shut.

The act of lighting a fire in the fireplace served to keep evil spirits and demons outside. In this instance of symbolism, fire is seen as the protector of the home.

Symbolism extends beyond the fire itself. Did you know that your fireplace in Wausau, WI also has ornamental symbolism? If you’ve ever wondered why fireplace facades and mantles have a shrine-like look to them, it’s because some cultures believed them to be a shrine. Idols or images of deities were placed on the mantle, a fire was lit and prayers were offered. In some cases, possessions or trinkets were burned in offering. It was the in-home equivalent to a church confessional for many cultures.

Finally, fireplaces have historically been recognized in some cultures as a way to cleanse homes. Lighting a fire was the same as spring cleaning for many cultures—in a spiritual sense. People would light fires in their fireplaces and let warmth radiate into their homes, overwhelming bad energy with heat and light (good energy).

Today, you might light your fireplace when you’re feeling cold and think nothing of it. But, it’s important to realize that fireplaces have a rich history that goes beyond just providing warmth. For many ancient cultures, the fireplace was an integral part of their daily living and spiritual wellness—one that we honor today by keeping fireplaces as a part of our homes.

FIRE WHIRL Fire whirls present a powerful intensification of combustion, long studied in the fire research community because of the dangers they present during large urban and wildland fires. However, their destructive power has hidden many features of their formation, growth, and propagation. Therefore, most of what is known about fire whirls comes from scale modeling experiments in the laboratory. Both the methods of formation, which are dominated by wind and geometry, and the inner structure of the whirl, including velocity and temperature fields, have been studied at this scale. Quasi-steady fire whirls directly over a fuel source form the bulk of current experimental knowledge, although many other cases exist in nature. The structure of fire whirls has yet to be reliably measured at large scales; however, scaling laws have been relatively successful in modeling the conditions for formation from small to large scales. This review surveys the state of knowledge concerning the fluid dynamics of fire whirls, including the conditions for their formation, their structure, and the mechanisms that control their unique state.

We highlight recent discoveries and survey potential avenues for future research, including using the properties of fire whirls for efficient remediation and energy generation.

For this workshop we were tasked with understanding how spaces can be influenced by language, with the premise of describing a space, and for our group, a Night Watchkeeper’s Hut, through storytelling. This workshop was intriguing as it allowed me to experience storytelling from an architects point of view, understanding the sense, the textures - building the atmosphere of the space.

The workshop made us use our imagination, communicating our feelings towards the Night Watchkeeper’s Hut through language. We tackled the task though identifying common feelings and words putting into visuals and written representation.

Discover Nature in Our Buildings The Enclosed Nature and The City Reflection: For this workshop I thoroughly enjoyed the task as we weere able to do a masterplan of the ground level of a triangular building. The task was to devlope the ground level of the building with the intention of designing the outdoor space the following week. I wanted to create a community and design not only residents but other stores which would benefit the community such as a grocery store, gym and pharmacy.

I overall valued this workshop as I able to develope my autocad and photoshop skills here. I also appreciated being able to design and configure the layout of the spaces for this small commmunity. It would definately be a workshop I would do again.

August 2021 Japanese Pink Cherry Plum Blossom Sakura Tree A cherry blossom is a flower of many trees of genus Prunus. The most well-known species is the Japanese cherry, Prunus serrulata, which is commonly called sakura.

They are widely distributed to Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Mainland China, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Thailand, Europe, United States, Canada, and West Siberia. It is considered the national flower of Japan.

All varieties of cherry blossom trees produce small, unpalatable fruit or edible cherries.

Edible cherries generally come from cultivars of the related species Prunus avium and Prunus cerasus.

In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolize clouds due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, an aspect of Japanese cultural tradition that is often associated with Buddhist influence, and which is embodied in the concept of mono no aware.

The association of the cherry blossom with mono no aware dates back to 18th-century scholar Motoori Norinaga. The transience of the blossoms, the exquisite beauty and volatility, has often been associated with mortality and graceful and readily acceptance of destiny and karma; for this reason, cherry blossoms are richly symbolic, and have been utilized often in Japanese art, manga, anime, and film, as well as at musical performances for ambient effect.

UoU Workshop 6A The Review of Reviews Reflection: This workshop was a valuable experience as we were investigating everything about reviews and how they make students feels and why some may feel nervous or anxious about them. I found it very interesting the different responses some students had and for the first activity we were tasked with matching colours and textures with descriptions of how we feel about reviews.

Majority of my group were students at UWE but I was curious to see what other students from around Europre would draw or write.

Most people took a very abstract method which meant to me that reviews could be seen different from person to person.

For the last activity we had to create a manifesto and 10 points about reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed the group experience as everyone was very professional and encouraging; we made it an effort to make sure everyone was involved.

UoU Workshop 7B Inside Outside: Contaminating Architecture and Landscape Reflection: For this workshop we were giving the task of incorporating architecture with nature. We were to create an abstract take on what that may look like. In my investigations into this task I wanted to show the community living in nature which encouraged me to create something which showed people inhabiting the trees.

As well for the second task, I thought it would look visually interesting to show the physical community in the branches of the trees as if the housing is growing out from the branches.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop thought the activity encouraged students to think outside the box to what communities could be in the future.
