Along the Way: Grace in the Ordinary and the Unexpected
REV. DR. BOB FULLER
One of the themes we are exploring this year at FPC is how discipleship is not just what happens in programs, Bible studies, or Sunday worship— it’s what happens along the way in our daily lives. Tish Harrison Warren, in her book Liturgy of the Ordinary, reminds us that following Jesus means learning to see God in the small and ordinary moments of life, and to serve Him faithfully wherever He places us.
We saw a living example of this recently in Hunt, Texas. On August 23, our Young Adult Ministry gathered with their families for a retreat at a ranch. It was a beautiful day of sun, water, kids playing, worship, and fellowship. But our Young Adult Director, Meg Culp, and her team also knew it was important to remember the tragedy that had struck this community just weeks before, when the July 4 floods devastated so many lives.
The most meaningful part of the retreat came when our young adults invited teachers from the Hunt School to join them for dinner and conversation.
Just weeks earlier, those very teachers had turned their ordinary school into a refuge during the July 4 floods. Classrooms that usually hosted students became sleeping quarters outfitted with cots. A science lab became a break room, filled with coffee and snacks. Laundry was washed in the gym. The basketball court was lined with tents and generators. Day after day, teachers and staff came to make sure responders had what they needed—all while preparing for a new school year.
This is an example of the ORDINARY becoming SACRAMENTAL. A SACRAMENT is a gift God gives us to point us to HIM. The sacrament of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper use ordinary things—water, bread, and wine—to point us to extraordinary realities: the cleansing grace of Christ and His presence with us always. Through God’s grace and the faithfulness of the Hunt teachers and staff, an ordinary school became holy ground as they shared the love of Christ and cared for the servants who were caring for the community.
The Hunt teachers and staff didn’t expect this tragedy, but they served in the best and most basic ways they could muster. That is discipleship along the way—serving in unexpected moments of opportunity with what God has already placed in our hands.
Most of us will not be called to turn our schools or homes into shelters, but we are called to serve in ordinary ways that point to Christ’s extraordinary love. At school, discipleship may look like inviting the lonely student to sit with you at lunch, encouraging a teacher with a kind note, or helping a classmate who is struggling. At work, it might mean being the co-worker who listens patiently, giving credit instead of keeping it, or quietly meeting the needs of a colleague going through a tough season. In our neighborhoods, discipleship can look like checking on elderly neighbors, mowing a lawn, or providing meals for a busy family. Even our daily errands can be holy opportunities—praying for the cashier at the grocery store, thanking the bus driver, or simply offering a smile that reflects the joy of Christ.
These may feel small, but like the Hunt teachers showed us, ordinary service is sacramental—it points beyond itself to the love and presence of Jesus. A sacramental life recognizes the holy in the everyday and invites others to encounter Him through us.
One teacher shared with us that whenever they prayed for something—whether sports drinks, food, sheets,
or towels—someone would arrive with exactly what was needed, often in abundance. It was a reminder that even in the midst of disaster, God is still good, He still loves us, and He equips His people to love one another. This is the good news of the ordinary: that our daily lives—our work, our school routines, our families, our neighborhoods—are places where God’s love can be made known.
The Hunt School teachers have shown us what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ, and they’ve reminded us that to Love Christ, Love One Another, and Love the City is to live as disciples along the way. At FPC, we are committed to walking alongside the Hunt School and the wider community as they continue to recover from the floods. Just as those teachers cared for the everyday needs of first responders so they could carry out their mission, we too are called to meet ordinary needs so that God’s extraordinary grace can be revealed.
As we move into this new ministry season, let us live so that along the way—in schools, workplaces, homes, and neighborhoods—people see Christ through our ordinary faithfulness. Grace and peace,

Theodore Roosevelt An Extraordinary Man...And Mason by Sichan Siv
Overlooking Oyster Bay Cove on New York's Long Island, the gravesite of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, is open on April 26 every year for people, mostly Freemasons, to pay their respects. Theodore Roosevelt holds the unique distinction of sharing similar backgrounds with Thomas Jefferson (POTUS No. 3) and George W. Bush (No. 43), 100 years apart from both. They all went to Ivy League schools: William and Mary, Harvard, and Yale. They were governors of their most populous states: Virginia, New York, and Texas. They all served two terms and started their presidencies at the beginning of a new century: 1801, 1901, 2001.
Roosevelt, however, was first among equals. He was the first to be in a submarine, the first to fly in an airplane, and the first to travel overseas, specifically to Panama to oversee the canal construction. He was the first American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which is on display in the White House's Roosevelt Room where I spent numerous hours in meetings chaired by my boss, George H. W. Bush (41).
In 1898, Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt traveled to San Antonio to recruit the Rough Riders to fight in the Spanish-American War. He was the only president to have earned a Medal of Honor.
Roosevelt was the ultimate symbol of resilience, overcoming a sickly childhood to be healthy and strong; surviving grief (“The light has gone out of my life” when his wife and mother died within hours of each other in 1884) to become an unwavering patriot and one of the greatest presidents in history. He is on Mt. Rushmore with Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln.
Along with Voltaire, Mozart, Burns, Goethe, Beethoven, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Paul Revere, and Marquis de Lafayette, Theodore Roosevelt was a Freemason (“To Be A Better Man”) in the company of 13 other presidents: Washington, Monroe, Jackson, Polk, Buchanan, Johnson, Garfield, McKinley, Taft, Harding, FDR, Truman, and Ford.
The Texas Founding Fathers (Austin, Dickinson, Houston, Jones), including those

killed in the Alamo (Bonham, Bowie, Crockett, Travis) and in Goliad (Fannin), were also members of the world’s oldest and largest charitable fraternity.
In Oyster Bay, New York, I had the opportunity to tour Roosevelt's impressive Sagamore Hill home and visit his Matinecock Lodge to admire its amazingly beautiful furnishings.
I climbed the 26 steps to the Roosevelt gravesite, where I paid my respects for 26 minutes to the 26th President of the United States. It was a special privilege, as the visit was not on April 26.
I feel blessed by this awesome experience, for Theodore Roosevelt was simply an extraordinary man and Mason.
“If you believe you can, you are half way there.”
“The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything.”
“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing.”
“For better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”

Nature Category Winner: Kathy Timberlake God shows up even in the mess and muck of life. While helping to clean out cabins at Camp Mystic on July 11, I stepped outside to catch my breath and wipe away tears. This heart-shaped tree stump was at the doorstep of one of the cabins I had stayed in as a camper in the early 1970s. It looked old. Had it always been there? I wondered if anyone else noticed this symbol of love as they walked in and out of this cabin each day, each week, each summer. As I paused to take a picture, my own heart was lifted. God shows up— even in the mess and muck of life! “We love, because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
• Look out for weekly theme ideas in the Traditional Bulletin and share where you see God in your everyday moments!
Prizes:
• Monthly winners receive an interactive scripture armband from Zox, a Texas company dedicated to creating meaningful wearables from recycled materials.
• Winning photos will be displayed in our church hallways and featured in the church magazine and congregation-wide email.
BACK TO SCHOOL PRAYER 2025
Uniting for Protection and Peace at Our Schools
God was honored and local schools were lifted up in prayer on Sunday, August 10, 2025 at the flagpoles of many schools across our city. These informal gatherings took place for the sole purpose of praying for protection and a healthy learning environment for schools and for all who will enter them this year.
The Prayer Ministry Committee would like to thank all those who participated, and it is our hope that this event will spread to all schools in the years to come.
Please continue to pray throughout the year for students, teachers, and staff at local schools, as well as schools across our nation.

President's Letter Sept. 2025
It is September, the month that we swing our feet off our hammocks, spring into a fresh school year, and start something new. Women of the Church activities are gearing up for a great year. Our purpose is to provide opportunities for women to grow in their knowledge of Christ and to be strengthened as members of His Body, equipped to fulfill His purpose in our families, congregation, workplaces, communities, and the world.
Our scripture selection for this year is from 1 Peter 4:8-10:
Above all, love each other deeply because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
The Circles in Women of the Church are a great place to love each other deeply. The Study Circles pray together and study God’s Word. The Service Circles, including the Circle of Concern and the Circle of Service, offer the love of Christ by helping with memorial receptions and preparing meals for those healing or welcoming a new baby into their lives. The talented women of the Shawl Ministry knit, crochet, and pray over prayer shawls and baby blankets that can be given to anyone in need. The friendly Literature Circle welcomes all (including men) to hear book reviews and engage in the lively discussions that follow.
This year the Circle Study is the book of James, using a study guide by Max Lucado titled "Life Lesson’s from James: Practical Wisdom," as well as our 2024 FPC sermons, with notes compiled by Grace Labatt. Although one can join a Circle at any time during the year, September is when the new
study begins. Circles meet monthly and at various times and locations. We even have a circle specifically for mothers of young children, and the newest and fastest-growing group, Circle Three, meets in the evenings at Covenant Partners’ homes.
And do we offer hospitality! Mark your calendars now for two Women of the Church events happening this Autumn. Ladies Night out will be Tuesday, October 14, at 6:00 PM at the Biggs' home, and the Fall Legacy Luncheon is on Monday, November 3, at Westminster Fellowship Hall, featuring our own Sallie Guy as the speaker.
If you don’t know how to dip your toes (or make a big splash) into Women of the Church, we are here to answer questions and get you connected, no matter your age or stage of life. Send us an e-mail with your questions.

How did I first get involved in Women of the Church? Circle 20 - The Circle of Service. I just made meals for people who were healing, and bit by bit, study by study, friendship by friendship, arm twist by arm twist, and prayer by prayer, I am now president. I have stage fright. This is way out of my comfort zone, but I feel like it’s where God (and so many of the people who love me deeply) think I should be. It’s time to trust and leave fear behind. I wonder if you sense God calling you to do the same this fall. Let’s grab hands and take the leap into these wonderful opportunities to be together, to get to know Him better, and to make use of the great range of gifts He has spread among the women of our church. Here we go!
Peace in Christ, Lellen Lane

Older Adult Ministry
We have enjoyed three great birthday lunches this summer— Chris Madrid’s, Bobbie’s, and of course, Milano’s. Everyone agreed that Bobbie’s is a keeper!
September 5 marks our kick-off for a new year of KEYS. We are excited to welcome back Blake and Jenna Bolerjack. We enjoyed their music and testimonies when they were with us last year. You can find them on Facebook or YouTube.
Exciting news! I dropped off posters at a few senior living facilities, and Franklin Park on Sunset responded—they will be bringing a group. This would be a great day to invite friends to join you!
Also this coming month, we are welcoming Richard Eisenhower. He has worked for the state agency that cares for the Texas Capitol. His hobby is collecting and studying vintage Texas postcards, and he is currently writing a reference book titled "Lunar Landscapes and Other Pre-1900 Texas Postcards." Shann Chaudhry is a San Antonio senior law expert with information that we need to know.
La Hacienda De Los Barrios has long been a favorite for KEYS birthday luncheons. The cost is $15, unless it is your birthday month—in that case, lunch is on us! Meet at the restaurant at 11:30 AM or catch the shuttle from FPC at 10:30 AM.
Onsite luncheons begin at 11:00 AM with a speaker, and lunch is served at noon. The cost is $15.
We are looking forward to a great year of KEYS events!
Blessings, Pastor Joe Moore
Assistant Pastor for Older Adults & Congregational Care

If you want to join in on the games email Nancy Black at whythere@icloud.com for more information. FIRST CUP READINGS
SEPTEMBER 2025
Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch
Dear Family in Christ, First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8
1 1 Thess. 5:12-28; Phil. 4:10-20; Prov. 19:11; James 5:7-11
6 Gen. 3; Rom. 1:18-32; Rom. 5:12-21; 1 Cor. 15:20-28
God is our Refuge and our Strength, our everpresent aid, And therefore, though the earth remove, We will not be afraid; Though hills amidst the seas be cast, Though foaming waters roar, Yea, though the mighty billows shake the mountains on the shore. Since God is in the midst of her, unmoved her walls shall stand, For God will be her early help, when trouble is at hand. (The Hymnbook, # 381)
7 Gen. 4; Heb. 11:1-4; 1 John 3
8 Gen. 6; Psalm 14; 53:1-3; Heb. 11:7; Rom. 3:9-30
9 Gen. 7; Psalm 36; 1 Pet. 3:8-22
10 Gen. 8; Jer. 5; Psalm 111

13 Gen. 15-17; Heb. 11:11-16; Rom. 4
Standing on the promises of Christ, my King! Thro' eternal ages let His praises ring. "Glory in the highest!" I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises of Christ, The Lord, bound to Him eternally by love's strong cord, Overcoming daily with the Spirit's Sword, Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises I cannot fall, listening every moment to the Spirit's call, Resting in my Saviour as my All in All, Standing on the promises of God. (Worship in Song, # 472)
14 Gen. 21-22; Heb. 11:17-19; 6:13-20
15 Gen. 32-33; 1 Chron. 16:7-18; Psalm 20
16 Gen. 35; Ruth 4:11-17; Micah 5:1-9; Matt. 1:1-17; Luke 1:46-55
How firm a foundation, ye saints of The Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent word! What more can He say than to you He hath said, To you who for refuge to Jesus hath fled? "Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God, I will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand, When through the deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; For I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress, The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake." (The Hymnbook, #369)
21 Gen. 41; Daniel 1:17-20; Acts 2:17-18; Heb. 1:1-2; 4:12; Col. 3:16
When Israel was in Egypt's land, Let my people go, oppressed so hard they could not stand, Let my people go. Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt's land, Tell old Pharaoh: Let my people go. The Lord told Moses what to do, Let my people go, to lead the Hebrew children through, Let my people go. Lord, help us all from bondage flee, Let my people go, and let us all in Christ be free, Let my people go. ( Spiritual)
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26).
