A New Year & Some New Faces
Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
Dear FPC Family, During the months of January and February 2026, while I am away for what I am calling my “Halftime,” Morgan and I will be visiting family and spending time with our children. I am grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with the Lord, pursue theological and personal study, and reestablish healthy rhythms for mind, body, and soul. We are also deeply grateful for the steady, wise leadership that will guide FPC forward during these two months. I want to introduce—again—two pastors whom many of you already know and love, and who will be serving you faithfully during this time.
Rev. Larry Coulter — Interim Head of Staff & Moderator of Session We are blessed that the Rev. Larry Coulter will serve as Interim Head of Staff and Moderator of Session during my absence. Larry brings pastoral maturity, gracious leadership, and deep spiritual wisdom to this role. Though his physical presence on campus each week will be limited, he will be available and engaged, providing strong support to our Session, staff, and congregation. Larry is retired from his long and fruitful ministry as Senior Pastor of Lakeway Church in Austin. A native of Tyler, he holds degrees from Texas A&M University and Princeton Theological Seminary. Over the course of nearly four decades in ministry, Larry has served churches in Laguna Beach, Houston, and Austin— including sixteen years at Shepherd www.fpcsanantonio.org
Isaiah 43:18-19 of the Hills Presbyterian Church. He has offered leadership to numerous Christian organizations, including the advisory board for Fuller Theological Seminary, the alumni council at Princeton Seminary, and Christ Together, a national network devoted to gospel renewal. Larry and his wife, Kim—a gifted full-time artist—continue to invest in the Church through the arts, serving on the advisory board of Fuller’s Brehm Center for Worship, Arts, and Theology. In retirement, Larry has discovered joy in gardening and mentoring young leaders. You will quickly appreciate his warmth, wisdom, and pastoral heart.
Rev. Kevin Germer — Interim Preaching Supply & Modern Service Preacher We are equally blessed to welcome the Rev. Kevin Germer, who will preach weekly in the Modern Service and serve as Interim Preaching Supply. Many of you heard Kevin preach this past summer—most memorably in the immediate aftermath of the devastating July 4 weekend floods across the Hill Country. His pastoral presence and gospel-centered message were a welcome comfort in a difficult week. Kevin serves as Associate Director of Laity Lodge, offering care, teaching, and spiritual leadership during retreats. A graduate of Whitworth College and Princeton Theological Seminary, he spent seventeen years as pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia—a vibrant, diverse, and deeply engaged
congregation. Born and raised in San Antonio, Kevin grew up right here at First Presbyterian Church. His return to this community is a homecoming in every sense of the word. Kevin loves backpacking, birding, drumming, and has an open challenge for anyone who wants to play pickleball at the Lodge. He and his wife, Libby, live in Boerne and have two sons. Both Larry and Kevin have already preached at FPC, met with our Session, Deacons, and staff, and have been warmly received. I am confident you will be encouraged by their presence and strengthened by their leadership. While I am away, Larry and Kevin will lead the congregation through a rich preaching series in the Gospel of John, focusing on discipleship through fellowship—a theme that lies at the heart of Christian community and the next season of ministry for FPC. This series will help us renew, deepen, and energize our small-group discipleship efforts. Together, you will explore how Jesus built community, and how His community shaped disciples. Each week will focus on one essential dimension of a Christ-shaped community: •
Love one another — Christian love is sacrificial, steadfast, and covenantal; it is patterned after Jesus’ own love for us.

Serve one another — True greatness is expressed through humble service, not status or power.

These themes, woven together, reveal how Jesus forms a community of grace—one that reflects His heart to the world. Please pray for Larry and Kevin as they shepherd, preach, and lead alongside you. I ask you also to pray for Morgan and me in this season of rest and reflection—for spiritual renewal, deepened trust, and clarity as I listen for what the Lord is restoring and renewing in me. Love one another well. Encourage one another. Care for one another. Continue to be the extraordinary church that you are—faithful, generous, joyful, and rooted in Christ. I look forward to returning in March, renewed and ready for the next season God is preparing for us together. I love you deeply, and I remain profoundly grateful to serve as your pastor.

Join Us February 6–8, 2026! In a world that feels weary and divided, the Kingdom vision of Jesus invites us into a new way of being, one that resists fear and restores hope. The Kingdom of God is not a distant ideal but a living reality that confronts our world, reshapes our loves, and calls us to live under the gracious rule of Christ. This February, acclaimed New Testament scholar and author Dr. Nijay K. Gupta will lead us through Scripture and the witness of the early church to discover Jesus’ vision of the Kingdom. Together, we’ll explore what it means to bear faithful witness to Christ in a fractured and anxious world, to see how our citizenship in the Kingdom of God redefines success, power, and belonging, and to reflect on the posture Christians are called to embody as we engage with the surrounding culture. About the Speaker: Nijay K. Gupta (PhD, University of Durham) serves as Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament studies at Northern Seminary and is an award-winning and best-selling writer. He has published more than twenty books including A Beginner’s Guide to New Testament Studies, Paul and the Language of Faith, Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church, and Strange Religion: How the First Christians Were Weird, Dangerous, and Compelling. Dr. Gupta co-chairs the Pauline Theology seminar of the Institute for Biblical Research and serves as a senior translator for the New Living Translation. He has bylines with Christianity Today, Christian Century, Outreach Magazine, and Fathom Magazine and also serves on the theological advisory committee for YoungLife USA. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Amy, and they have three amazing teenagers.

Kerrville Police Christmas Reflections A Shared Evening of Service, Gratitude, and Partnership In December, members of First Presbyterian Church San Antonio had the opportunity to partner with First Presbyterian Church Kerrville to help host a Christmas gathering for the City of Kerrville Police Department and their families. What began as a simple act of service quickly became a meaningful reminder of God’s provision, the power of partnership, and the gift of showing up for those who serve our communities every day. For months following the devastating July 4th flood, members of FPC San Antonio’s Disaster Relief Task Force had been praying for another open door to serve Kerrville in a direct and relational way. While initial invitations to help had gone unanswered, the invitation from FPC Kerrville to co-host a Christmas event for local first responders felt like a clear answer to prayer—a gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit that the time was right. Preparation for the event came together quickly. Members of the Women of the Church rallied with creativity and generosity, designing decorations and baking desserts. Leah Butler and Lellen Lane helped guide the planning, with Lellen Lane, Pat Johnson, and Lynn Thompson traveling to Kerrville to decorate the gymnasium for the celebration. Trays

of cookies, a beloved homemade cake, and festive Christmas topiaries transformed the space into a warm and welcoming setting. As decorations were unloaded and the room took shape, one of the Kerrville hosts shared through tears how seen and supported they felt. Those moments of connection set the tone for the evening. On the day of the event, teams from both churches worked side by side—sharing a meal, meeting staff and volunteers, and pooling gifts and resources in what felt like a “holy potluck.” Despite a few planning hiccups along the way, a shared desire to honor police officers and their families fostered patience, trust, and growing friendship between the congregations. The gathering itself was filled with gratitude and fellowship. Officers and their families expressed heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to be together, and the Kerrville Chief of Police personally sought out volunteers to share his appreciation. Time was also set aside to recognize outstanding members of the department, honoring their service to the community.

Throughout the evening, volunteers heard stories of courage and sacrifice—particularly from officers who served during the July 4th flood and who continue to carry the weight of that day. Many officers shared openly about the ongoing impact of trauma and the importance of community support. For those who served at the event, it was a powerful reminder of why presence and compassion matter. As the evening came to a close and volunteers prepared to head home, one participant reflected simply, “I’m glad we did that. I’m finally in the Christmas spirit.” It was a sentiment echoed by many. First Presbyterian Church Kerrville later shared their own gratitude, noting how quickly the gathering came together and how essential the partnership with FPC San Antonio was in making the night possible. Together, both congregations were reminded that ministry is often born in cooperation, trust, and a willingness to say yes when God opens a door. All who participated returned home grateful—for the opportunity to serve, for new relationships formed, and for the hope of continued partnership with FPC Kerrville in the days ahead.

A New Tool to Help Us Stay Connected:
Introducing TouchPoint Beginning this month, First Presbyterian Church is starting a gradual transition to a new church management system called TouchPoint. While this is a behind-the-scenes change in technology, our hope is that it will make day-to-day connection at FPC feel simpler, clearer, and more personal for everyone. For decades, FPC has relied on our previous system (ACS) to manage membership records, giving, and participation. TouchPoint allows us to bring many of those functions together in one place—helping staff, ministry leaders, and members communicate more easily and stay connected across worship, groups, and events. What’s Happening First In January, our focus is intentionally narrow and supportive: • • •
Member accounts from our previous system have been securely transferred into TouchPoint. Congregants will be invited to log in, confirm their information, and update details as needed. You’ll be able to view giving history and pledges in the new TouchPoint giving system.
At this stage, we’re not asking everyone to learn everything at once—just to take a first step so your information is accurate and accessible. What Will Change Over Time
Why This Matters
As the year progresses, you may notice additional updates:
TouchPoint helps us reduce duplication, improve accuracy, and respond more quickly to the needs of our church family. When information flows more smoothly between systems, it allows our staff and volunteers to spend less time troubleshooting and more time focused on ministry, care, and connection.

Check-in and attendance processes will look a little different. Event registration and calendars will gradually shift into the new system. Church emails and notifications will evolve as TouchPoint becomes our central communication hub.
All of these changes are aimed at one goal: creating a smoother experience for everyone—whether you’re a first-time visitor, a long-time member, a parent checking in children, a small-group leader, a Session member, or a pastor.
Most importantly, this transition is about people— not software. We are committed to moving at a thoughtful pace, offering clear guidance, and providing help along the way. A WOO HOO for Generosity! The children of the church and the Childcare Center worked together to surpass our goal of 300 tomato products and cereals for CAM. As I delivered the donations, the volunteers told me that this was exactly what they needed. A big WOO HOO! to all the children and parents who participated in this amazing outreach. But the opportunity to give is not over! Ms. Lindsay, with Missions, has challenged us to bring mittens, socks, gloves, and beanie hats through the end of January. What do you say, boys and girls? Do you think we should take the challenge and amaze them with our generosity? Let’s do it!

Children’s Advent Festival – ADVENTure The children and families had a wonderful ADVENTure at the Advent Festival on November 30th. Together, we discovered—along with Mary and Joseph—the “Unexpected Gift” of a baby. We helped herd sheep in “Run and See” and learned that the angels appeared first to the shepherds to tell them of the birth of Jesus. We followed the “Guiding Star” and discovered what the wise men learned so many years ago: that Jesus is the “Best Gift.” www.fpcsanantonio.org
Jesus is the true meaning of Christmas. The tradition at FPC continues as we made a beautiful Advent wreath, Christmas tree ornaments, and shared the Good News with our neighbors and friends by creating neighborly bags—inviting them to come and be a part of this wonderful church. The ADVENTure was over too quickly, but we are already excited to journey again next Advent season.

Children's Pageant A Beautiful Tradition This year’s Christmas pageant was a wonderful opportunity for FPC children and Confirmation Students to faithfully tell the story of Jesus’ birth. Under the direction of Ashley Jackson, the children and students shared from their hearts the Good News of Jesus. The Sanctuary was alive with mice, sheep, a donkey, and a camel—leading the way for shepherds, angels, and all the other participants to bring glory to the Lord. Behind the scenes, parents, volunteers, choir teachers, and staff helped make this morning special for all who were in attendance. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped make this pageant such a beautiful depiction of the birth of Jesus. Our prayer for you this season is that you will know again, in a new way, what it means for God to be with us. God bless you all.

President's Letter Jan. 2026 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people ... ." Luke 2:8-20 January is here, full of all its plans and possibilities—but first… we need to say goodbye to December and all the love it held! The power of cookies. With only four days’ notice, WOC bakers were able to turn on a dime and provide a tableful of beautiful Christmas cookies for a party for the policemen of Kerrville, hosted by Kerrville First Presbyterian Church and our own Local Missions team. Those cookies— and the lovely decorations created by Leah Butler, then delivered and set up by a WOC team—brought a tear to the Kerrville Church employee’s eye when she saw them. There were so many! Cookies were also one of the stars of the show at the Morningside Manor Christmas parties held the first two Thursdays of December. The residents had a great time listening to the Friday Singers—complete with a Frosty the Snowman pantomime. Children from our Children’s Center then sang their hearts out and rang their bells with enthusiasm. Next up, Scott (on the first Thursday) and Joe (on the second) gave a Christmas message. Then… all the cookies! One lady looked up at me after she carefully selected a gingerbread man from my tray and asked, “Do you have any coffee?” Alas—we only served Hawaiian Punch. The PCHAS Christmas Party was held at their campus on Saturday, December 13th. The weather cleared up just in time for it to
be held outside in their large pavilion, where a reindeer mascot bounced around to make the party extra festive. Joy was everywhere as Women of the Church volunteers helped children select gifts for their parents and then wrap them. Other volunteers took photos of the children with a festive Christmas background and then helped them construct a keepsake ornament with the child’s photo. Individuals and circles from WOC also provided gifts from the wish lists of the children and young adults of PCHAS for their Christmas Kids program. The Gift of Christmas Project with HNS had another successful year, as groups from our church delivered carloads of beautifully wrapped gifts, Bibles, and gift cards to families in need. The smiles received filled our hearts for a year. We also assisted HNS by delivering wrapped bilingual Goodnight Moon books for the children in their preschool and gift bags for their staff, which included a devotional from our church and a journal. And we can’t forget—lots and lots of diapers. The Study Circles continued with their Study of James and supporting all the December WOC activities. Some had Christmas parties and luncheons. Sheila Figueroa reviewed The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at the Literature Circle. You can find her fabulous presentation on the church website. The last WOC event of December was the Christmas Eve reception honoring the ministerial staff, choir members, and musicians who shared their hearts, talent, and time with us during the five services. An extra thanks goes to the volunteers who served and provided the food that busy day, and to Cooper’s Meat Market for the beautiful tray of beef. Now January is here—and we face that empty calendar and begin to make our own plans and resolutions. Thankfully, God has His own plans for us, and His are best. My resolution is to make room for Him to work. One fun thing to pencil into that empty calendar and look forward to is the Winter Ladies Night Out, to be held at Karla Keahey’s home on Tuesday, January 27th. It is a catered event, so no need to bring anything. All women are welcome! Just $25, and scholarships are available. It will be great fun—bring a friend! Happy New Year!

Dear KEYS Friends, December was a joyful season for our KEYS community. We gathered for a Christmas Party filled with music from the FPC Children’s Center Choir and the Cox Family Singers, enjoyed a special showing of The Sound of Music, and shared time together over a new animated film, David. These moments of fellowship and celebration are such a gift, and I am grateful for each of you who helped make them meaningful. As we step into the new year, January brings opportunities to reconnect and look ahead together. We are delighted to welcome Judge David Peeples, a longtime Covenant Partner of FPC, who will share with us from his life and experience. We also look forward to celebrating birthdays together this month and welcoming San Antonio Rodeo Ambassadors, who will give us a preview of what’s to come as the rodeo season returns to our city. It is a joy to begin another year walking together in community, faith, and friendship. I am thankful for each of you and for the ways God continues to work among us through KEYS.
