TheDeepDiveprogrammethatDrRachelLichtensteinhasexpertlycoordinatedispartof anunprecedentedinitiativebytheEuropeanUniontopreserveandpromoteawarenessofthe hundredsofJewishcemeteriesacrosssevencountriesinEasternEuropebeingimplementedby threeconsortiumpartners–theFoundationforJewishHeritage,theEuropeanJewishCemeteries Initiative,andCentropa.
TheseJewishcemeterysitesprimarilyrepresent‘orphaned’heritage.Thecommunitiesthatthey onceservedweremostlyextinguishedduringtheHolocaust.Inmanyplaces,theJewishcemetery standsasthelastphysicalevidenceofoncethrivingJewishlife,andthevastmajorityaretoday inaparlousstatehavingsufferedyearsofneglectandininstancescompletedestruction.
Indeed,theveryexistenceoftheseJewishcommunitieshasbecomelargelymarginalisedand forgotten,whichiswhythisEUprojectisofsuchcriticalimportance.Notonlydoesitaddress thepreservationofcemeteriesbutitispreservationwithaspecialpurpose,toensurethatthe JewishlifeintownsandcitiesacrossEasternEuropeisrecalled,understood,commemorated andcelebrated.
Rachel’sbriefwastoworkwithlocalpartnerstodevelopinnovativeeducational/cultural programmesinonesignificantcemeteryineachofthesevencountries.Theideabehindthisis thattheycouldoperateasmodels,demonstratinghowJewishcemeteriescouldservecontemporarypurposes,drawingattentiontolocalJewishhistoryinacreativeway,anddemonstrating howJewishcemeteriescanplayapartintoday’ssocietyaslivingculturalheritage.
TheJewishexperienceinevitablytouchesuponwhatisnowconsideredfundamentalEuropean values–ofhumanrights,democracy,andtheruleoflaw.FindingwaystoengagewiththeJewish legacyinEuropehasaspecialimportancefortoday.
