We had several quotes and design suggestions from other companies before meeting Ben. From the first meeting we were impressed with Ben’s understanding of our needs and he gave us excellent practical ideas. We particularly liked that he was able to show us samples there and then, without the need to visit a show room. He involved us in decisions along the way and, without doubt, made the process far less stressful than we imagined it would be! Thanks so much - Mr & Mrs Fog

I approached Happy Kitchens with a challenge. The current layout and look of my kitchen was not working, and many other companies were put off by the fact the kitchen was on the first floor and in a town house just off Winchester High Street, so parking was an issue. Not for Happy Kitchens though, they were by far the best quote for the quality and came up with the best design, leading to the kitchen pictured above installed in less than 7 days - Mrs Barnell

Kitchen & Bedroom Makeovers

I tasked Happy Kitchens with a makeover incorporating major changes. Ben came up with a beautiful design and costed this kitchen at just under half of the quoted costs, from brands such as Wren and Magnet. Not only did it cost less the quality offered was much higher, hand made units and worktops fabricated to order - Mrs Ward

We had just moved and wanted to update and bring colour and a contemporary feel into our existing kitchen but wanted to avoid the large Corporate Companies. We found the answer in Happy Kitchens when Ben brought his showroom to us, and the experience of choosing units and colours turned out to be an exciting one, rather than daunting and disappointing. Their time keeping, efficiency and workmanship were second to none. We were consulted where decisions mattered and nothing seemed too much trouble - Mrs Jane Wareham

Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

PHOTOGRAPH NOW, SELL LATER! WHY SUMMER IS THE SMART SEASON FOR PROPERTY PHOTOGRAPHY

As the summer sun beams across gardens and illuminates living spaces, there’s no better time to showcase your property at its absolute best. While autumn may be one of the busiest seasons for the property market, the savvy move is to prepare now - and it all begins with great photography.

Summer provides the perfect canvas for capturing the essence of a home. Gardens are in full bloom, natural light floods interiors, and blue skies elevate every shot. These vibrant, sun-drenched images can make all the difference when launching a listing later in the year. By photographing now, sellers can take advantage of the season's aesthetic strengths and avoid the muted tones and bare branches of autumn.

Beyond the visual appeal, preparing now gives sellers breathing room. With professional photography already in place, you can launch at the perfect moment - be it back-to-school season, post-holiday resets, or the wave of buyer activity that typically surges in September. It allows time for brochures to be beautifully designed, floorplans refined, and marketing materials thoughtfully prepared.

Even if you’re not quite ready to sell yet, a summer photoshoot futureproofs your sale. Life moves fast, and when the time is right, you'll already be one step ahead.

Contact our friendly and professional team today for a no obligation appraisal and marketing prep meeting, 01962 736333.

Alresford Bowling Club

A Sponsorship Update

A coffee morning at the club was held recently and one of our sponsors, Rawlings Opticians and Hearing Care, gave an informative and amusing presentation regarding hearing loss. As part of their Gold Sponsorship Package, RBC Brewin Dolphin was invited last month to a bowling session, drinks and nibbles and was presented with a picture of the club.

Amazing bowling skills were on show from the company's representatives despite it being only their first time playing bowls. An enjoyable evening was had by all.

Since the inception of the Ladies v Gents Tournament in 2010, the gents have remained unbeaten. The ladies were determined to enjoy the game whatever the result but could there be an upset this year? Could the ladies actually win? With one gentleman making up a full team for the ladies, and the temperatures soaring, the ladies turned up the heat and bowled some inspiring shots and achieved an overwhelming victory over the men 39-24... finally! Well done ladies, and worthy of an open top bus victory parade through Alresford! Ladies, come and join our club and help us build a winning team against the gents next year!

Our Club Competition Finals Day will be held in September and members are eagerly competing against each other to win the coveted trophies and cups on offer culminating with a Presentation Evening being held in November.

Some of our members took part in the annual bowling holiday, which was held in Bournemouth this year, where some matches were arranged against local clubs. A fun time was had by all.

Alresford Hearing Studio, our Silver Package Sponsor, has been presented with a picture and invited to join us for our Fun Day later this month. All our sponsors have been invited to join us for an evening of bowling, drinks and nibbles too in appreciation of their interest and sponsorship of the club.

If you would be interested in sponsoring our club next year then please do get in touch with Lindsey (Secretary), alresfordbowls@gmail.com for more information regarding our mutually beneficial sponsorship packages on offer.

Alresford Bowling Club is proud to be sponsored by: The Alresford Hearing Studio, Garthowen Garden Centre, Rawlings Opticians and Hearing Care, RBC Brewin Dolphin, New Farm Motor Services Ltd and Richard Steel and Partners.

If you would like to be part of this local, forward thinking, friendly club then why not come along and have a go?

As from 1 August membership is half price (your membership will cease on 31 December 2025). You are allowed two free trial bowling sessions and if you are not ready to join you can become a temporary member and pay £5 each time you play. Flat soled shoes must be worn at all times on the green. Roll-ups (practice sessions) are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings 10.00 a.m. - noon and Thursday evenings at 6.00 p.m. with a social element at a cost of £3 per session, once a member. Social events will be planned once the playing season has finished.

ALRESFORD RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB JACKIE'S COUNTY CORNER

As we start, what we hope will be a long hot summer, Alresford Rugby Club are already deep into preparation for our upcoming season. We have learnt of our opponents, with the release of the fixtures for both the First and the Second teams, our pre-season training has just started, and we have a number of events throughout the summer that we would love to welcome you to. Firstly though, we would like to thank all those who stopped by the Alresford Rugby Club stand at the recent Watercress Festival – it was lovely to welcome old friends and new, and to spread the word about the club. You may have noticed the Marshalls at certain points throughout the festival; these were all Alresford Rugby Club members giving their time to ensure that the day ran smoothly. Our Summer Touch rugby sessions have just started, and new attendees are always welcome. The sessions run on Thursdays evenings at the Natta ground at the back of the Arlebury from 6:30 to 7:30. Anyone from ages 9 to adults can take part, all abilities, no knowledge of rugby required, just a way of playing the sport in a fun and relaxed environment.

On 12th July, we had a Summer BBQ and general ground tidy up, to ensure that we are ready for the season. A wonderful summers day, with members new and old gathering to ensure that our ground is amongst the best in the league.

Our pre-season fixtures have been announced, and we welcome you to come and support the boys as they build up to the start of the season on October 4th.

The fixtures are:

30th August – Southsea Nomads (away)

13th September – Aldershot & Fleet (away) 20th September – Hook & Odiham (home) All kickoff at 3pm.

We are also starting to plan for the Alresford Show on 6th September, where once again, we will be marshalling the car parks, and welcoming people to our stand. We are constantly looking for new players, members and administrators to join this thriving club, with further details shown below.

We would also like to take this opportunity to mourn the loss of Oscar the club dog, who visited many grounds over the course of his life and will be sorely missed.

So, on behalf of Alresford Rugby Club, we wish you all a wonderful summer, and look forward to seeing you at some point over the coming months.

Summer is a time of village fetes, and they abound in this division! Thank you if you host or helped at a stall, and thank you too if you went to support a good cause whilst having an enjoyable afternoon. Fetes are good for so many reasons. As well as fundraising, they bring people together, with stalls and games to enjoy, bring a sense of community and it is a good family occasion. Our local PCSOs also attended several fetes on very hot afternoons: thanks gentlemen! If like me you bought a piece of bric a brac, or several children’s books from each one, we all realise they are great for recycling too.

Talking of recycling, do you have a black bin, or if in a flat, a blue bin for glass? Maybe your bin has been lost or broken? Or do you take your extra bottles to a bottle bank? The bottle banks can be noisy for neighbours and popular banks can be busy places. I am concerned for residents who are consistently woken by the sound of bottles crashing into the bins.

So I am asking you to think of others as you recycle please:-

• If you use a bottle bank, particularly the multi bin sites, please only use at sociable hours, from 8am to 8pm.

• After a big sports event or a hot weekend, and if the bins are unexpectedly full, please take your bottles home again and report the full bin to me or on the ‘Winchester app’.

• If you don’t have a bottle bin for your home, please contact me or Clare Pinniger cpinniger@winchester.gov.uk

Local Government reorganisation continues but Hampshire’s solution to the puzzle is different from the solution offered by most of the districts. This subject is confusing for residents enough, without a difference of opinion between layers of local government. Can I assure you that debating this subject doesn’t take time away from my purpose to represent you, but I am always keen to hear your views on the subject. To see the picture from your viewpoint is always informative. Thanks for all your comments so far.

Earn over £100k?

Beware the ‘60% tax trap’

While 45% is the highest ‘official’ income tax rate in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the way the tax-free personal allowance is treated means that some people pay an effective tax rate of 60% on some of their income.

Known as the ‘60% tax trap’, it applies to earnings between £100,000 and £125,140. Here, we explain how the tax trap works and why pensions could help you manage it.

Income tax and the personal allowance

Most people have a standard personal allowance of £12,570, which is the amount of income you do not pay tax on each year. If you have a standard personal allowance, the tax rates you’ll pay in each band of earnings are as follows:

How to reinstate your personal allowance

A way to mitigate the 60% tax trap is to save into a pension. If you earn £110,000 and make a gross pension contribution of £10,000, your adjusted net income falls to £100,000. This would reinstate your full personal allowance and give an effective rate of tax relief of 60% on your pension contribution. There is a cap on the amount you and your employer can pay into your pension each year and still get tax relief. For most people, the annual allowance is £60,000, (this might be tapered if your adjusted income exceeds £260,000). If you exceed your annual allowance, you’ll have to pay an annual allowance charge which essentially claws back any tax relief received. It is also important to note that income tax relief on individual pension contributions is limited to the higher of £3,600 or 100% of your relevant UK earnings.

Next steps

Understanding how different tax rules might affect you isn’t easy, especially as the rules can change frequently. A financial adviser can help explain how the various rules affect your long-term financial planning and help decide the best course of action for you.

Source: HMRC

Once you earn more than £100,000, your tax-free personal allowance starts to be tapered. It reduces by £1 for every £2 that your adjusted net income exceeds £100,000 and is zero if your income is £125,140 or above.

Why the 60% tax trap occurs

Imagine you earn £110,000 – or £10,000 above the threshold. You would not only pay £4,000 in higher rate tax on the £10,000, but you’d also lose £5,000 of your personal allowance. And with £5,000 of your personal allowance gone, that portion of your income is now also subject to tax at 40%, costing you another £2,000. In other words, of that £10,000, you’d only get to keep £4,000, which equates to a 60% tax rate. For Scottish residents, the effective rate of tax is even higher at 67.5%, as income in the top rate tax band is 48% in Scotland.

MR MAC - AUGUST NEWS

Jo Hamilton’s personal story behind the Post Office scandal, “Why Are You Here Mrs Hamilton?”, is now available to read or listen to in Audible. She still lives locally in South Warmborough where she ran the local Post Office. I have been fortunate to meet her and on a few occasions; she is a remarkable woman. I recently heard her being interviewed on Times Radio recently talking about her experiences and the release of the book. It is read by Monica Dolan, the actress who portrayed Jo in the ITV dramatisation “Mr Bates vs The Post Office”. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Something I would rarely, if ever, recommend is Sky TV. It is, in my opinion, highly overpriced. I suggest that, instead of committing to a 2-year subscription directly with Sky, you join Now TV, available as an app on your Smart TV, computer, telephone or tablet. The main advantage is being able to turn it off individual packages if you no longer need one.

As ever, stay vigilant on the internet and when reading your emails. If you ever have the slightest doubt about an email message – delete it.

Winchester City Council

My grandmother often reminded me that ‘self-praise is no recommendation’, an adage many might bear in mind. Praise by others is rather different. Three notable examples:

Climate Change

Winchester City Council was marked as the ‘top performing’ district council in the country for work on the climate crisis by Climate Emergency UK which has scored all UK councils on their performance. Winchester City Council was awarded a score of 68% overall (an increase of 19% compared to the last score card in 2023.) It leads the way by far in Hampshire, scoring 22% higher than the next highest performing council in the county.

Its Climate Action Scorecard system was devised to rank councils on how they’re tackling climate change, based on seven areas: buildings and heating, transport, planning and land use, governance and finance, biodiversity, collaboration and engagement, and waste reduction and food.

The City Council scored particularly highly in in the categories of buildings & heating and planning & land use, reflecting work both to increase the energy efficiency of its buildings and housing stock and the carbon reduction policies in the emerging local plan. Collaboration and engagement were recognised as a particular strength, visible in the council’s collaborative work with partners, businesses and organisations to be a carbon neutral district by 2030.

Work continues; we have plans in place to reduce carbon emissions and improve our score even further, such as our food waste recycling service, and our nature improvement plan, upgrading from our Local Nature Recovery Strategy, to increase biodiversity, launching this autumn.

Nutrient Mitigation

Winchester City Council has been shortlisted for a prestigious planning award by the Royal Town Planning Institute, no less. It has shortlisted the ‘Winchester Nutrient Mitigation Strategy’ under its ‘best project’ award.

The joint submission from the City Council and the Partnership for South Hampshire was based on the work of Winchester City Council to protect and improve the water quality of important chalk streams across the district, while still being able to provide new homes.

In March 2022 Natural England highlighted the damaging effect that excessive nitrates and phosphates had on our chalk streams and ultimately on the Solent, causing severe eutrophication/algae bloom. Natural England was recognised that new homes contribute to excessive

nutrients into the water. Henceforth, all new developments had to demonstrate that they would not add to the problem by purchasing nutrient credits.

Winchester City Council has been proactive in tackling this key issue and developed a number of nutrient mitigation schemes. By upgrading city council owned waste-water treatment works (WWTW) we will reduce harmful nutrients entering our rivers and streams. A pilot scheme, funded by the city council, to upgrade two WWTWs was completed last year. Working with Partnership for South Hampshire, the city council has been able to access the Local Nutrient Mitigation Fund (LNMF) to start work on upgrading a further 10 WWTWs this year.

The process of upgrading private systems funded by nutrient credits is cumbersome, but some are now going ahead locally. As all villages upstream of Alresford are without mains drainage this is the only way that OUR river quality will be improved. Regrettably, Hobbs Close is a technical and financial challenge, but there may be a solution!

A not unrelated local problem

Some residents will be aware of the sewage spill in Alresford, due to the breakdown of two pumping stations. Our MP Danny Chambers (alerted by your local councillors) is in touch with the CEO of Southern Water; worryingly, he knew nothing about this problem. We will keep you informed.

Gold accreditation for Winchester City Council’s domestic abuse support

Winchester City Council has received official gold accreditation (the highest level available) from the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA). The accreditation followed a thorough assessment against the charity’s standards for responding to domestic abuse. Since August 2023, the council has undertaken significant work to recognise and respond to domestic abuse.

This includes embedding a trauma-informed, victim-centred approach to domestic abuse situations throughout council policies and procedures, and spearheading a local partnership of organisations to ensure full, cohesive support for those experiencing domestic abuse. Organisation-wide staff training has helped officers respond. In addition, the council has created a network of well-equipped domestic abuse champions within its organisation.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a domestic abuse situation, Winchester City Council’s website has advice and further guidance.

Sun Lane

We are aware that recent tree felling on Sun

Lane was approved without reference to City Councillors. There is also an application to remove the pumping station, with no evident justification. Under planning law ‘non-material changes’ are allowed once planning permission is granted, without public consultaion. Your city councillors are on the case.

Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) Survey launch

The joint LGR survey is now live at https://ourplaceourfuture.commonplace.is/

This survey has been jointly developed with 12 of the 15 councils across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It has four sections to complete: Your Local area and community; what you want from your council, proposals for new councils (this will display the three options which includes a map showing potential boundary changes) and then an about you section.

Our preferred options is to combine with Test Valley and East Hampshire, being largely comprised of market towns and rural areas.

Alresford Hearing Studio

Celebrating Six Years of Outstanding Hearing Care in Alresford

This summer marks six years since the Alresford Hearing Studio first opened its doors, bringing independent, expert hearing care to the heart of our community. Founded in 2019, the Studio has become a trusted name, offering personalised service, cutting-edge technology, and a genuine passion for helping people hear better. We spoke with Samuel Longman, cofounder and lead audiologist to get an understaning of how the business has evolved and plans for the future.

What made you decide to start Alresford Hearing Studio?

"I wanted to create a space that offered a truly personal experience — where people felt listened to, not just tested. After years in the industry, I saw how the larger chains often rushed people through appointments and pushed sales targets. I knew we could do better for our patients."

What do you think sets you apart?

"It’s our independence and the relationships we’ve built. We’re not tied

to one manufacturer, so we choose the best technology for each person from all the available solutions. And we take the time to get to know our patients and their lifestyles. Hearing care isn’t one-size-fits-all, and we will never treat it that way."

How do you see the future of your business?

"I see us continuing to evolve alongside the latest technology, constantly expanding our knowledge through training and refining our processes to work more efficiently. But growth for us isn’t about size — we don’t want to lose the close-knit, family feel that our patients value. Our goal isn’t to be the biggest hearing care provider — it’s to provide the best service for our local community."

To celebrate this milestone, The Alresford Hearing Studio are offering FREE HEARING TESTS throughout August. If you’ve been struggling to hear clearly — or just want peace of mind — now is the perfect time to book an appointment with our friendly team. Call 01962 790749 or visit alresfordhearingstudio. co.uk to find out more.

Our commitment to you

The Alresford Hearing Studio is committed to continually invest in the latest diagnostic equipment to make sure all hearing tests and ear wax removal appointments are carried out to the highest level of patient satisfaction. Our Team has built years of hearing experience and appreciates how vital hearing is to building relationships with loved ones and to enhance the quality of life.

Our fully qualified HCPC registered audiologists will guide you through a fully comprehensive hearing consultation and demonstration in our fully immersive hearing studio which can replicate those extremely challenging environments to make sure you are making and informed decision regarding your hearing health.

Our Commitment to our products and process is demonstrated by our 60 day money back guarantee on all hearing aid purchases.

Yes, You SHOULD Feel Good (About Your Vagina)

Those of us who have issues down there know the impact our vagina can have on our quality of life. But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.

Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.

From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need.

Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.

The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.

What is Ultra Femme 360?

Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.

Feel good…

Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?

This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.

Does the treatment hurt?

We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.

We are one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.

Book your treatment today. We should all feel good about our vaginas.

Important Update on Weight Loss Treatment – Mounjaro

You may have seen recent headlines that people living with obesity will be able to begin accessing tirzepatide (Mounjaro) for weight loss purposes in primary care settings. It means primary care settings can begin discussions with patients about whether tirzepatide is the right option to improve their health through weight loss. In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight around 1,000 people currently qualify for the medication based on national eligibility criteria – the ICB are working to set up services quickly however this will not be available locally until later this year (Autumn) – so please don’t contact the surgery just yet, as we will be unable to help currently.

Full qualifying criteria is a BMI of 40 or greater and FOUR or MORE of the following diagnosed health conditions:

• Hypertension

REFLECTING ON MY FIRST YEAR AS YOUR MP - DANNY CHAMBERS MP

On the anniversary of the election last July, we delivered something very few first-year MPs ever manage. My Animal Welfare Bill passed through the Commons and is now on track to become the law. It will put a stop to the abuse of dogs and cats who suffer from cruel mutilations like ear cropping and declawing. It’s been an incredible achievement not just politically, but practically garnering support across the House and from the wider animal welfare community. I couldn’t be prouder and I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who supported this campaign.

Over the past year, alongside my amazing team, I have handled more than 8,000 constituency support cases, each one personal, urgent, and often life-changing. Whether it’s a family waiting on a visa decision, a parent fighting for SEND support, or a pensioner unsure how they’ll keep the heating on, we’ve been there.

From day one, I took the fight for Winchester’s A&E and consultant-led maternity services straight to the top, putting our hospital front and centre with questions to the Health Secretary and the Prime Minister himself. I’ve walked the corridors of the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and described in Parliament the unacceptable conditions that patients and staff endure every single day.

I was honoured to open the new GP surgery at St Clement’s improving access to care for thousands. We’ve campaigned day in, day out for better mental health services and I helped shape the new Mental Health Bill to ensure people get the help they need sooner. I’ve brought together midwives, doctors, campaigners and women to push for fairer maternal care.

Farming and our rural communities have been at the heart of much of my work. I’ve visited farms in every corner of the constituency, and heard from young farmers concerned about bad trade deals threatening to undercut our high quality produce with cheap imports.

I’ve done my best to help win local fights that matter. I’ve taken on Southern Water more than once, helping a local farmer win compensation from them after a sewage spill, and fought for fairness for those in park homes ensuring their energy, connectivity and rent concerns were heard, securing refunds from Southern Water for overcharging.

As we prepare for the next year in Parliament, my commitment and energy won’t fade. Whether it’s to secure funding for our hospital in Winchester, cleaning up our precious chalk streams, tackling the cost of living, protecting our local farms from bad trade deals, our local businesses or our most vulnerable neighbours from cuts, I’ll keep showing up, speaking out, and delivering change.

My team and I are ready to help, so if there are any issues or concerns you have, get in touch at danny.chambers.mp@parliament.uk

Taking the Biscuit

“I think it may have been a mistake.” She had her back to him as she stood at the kitchen table, drinking a cup of tea. Himself narrowed his eyes and wondered what the mistake may have been. The too-small shoes she’d bought in the sale? Her fourth, possibly fifth, Jaffa Cake? (The plate on the kitchen table looked seriously depleted.) Or merely the invention of the internet.

Frankly, it could be anything.

“You’ll have to give me a clue,” he capitulated. She turned and looked at him blankly. “I said,” he raised his voice slightly, “give me a clue.”

She reached under her hair and retrieved an ear bud. “About what?”

“The mistake.” Himself was fast losing interest in the nature of the mistake and, based entirely on his love of both the internet and Jaffa Cakes, decided the shoes were the ideal candidate.

“Sorry – didn’t realise I’d said that out loud… Mistake choosing the audio book over the paperback.”

“But, as you’ve often pointed out, it’s so convenient – you can multi-task when you’re listening to a book. With the physical, woodpulp rendition in your hands, not so much.”

Although he recalled it hadn’t stopped his daughter wandering around town with her nose firmly in The Order of the Phoenix.

“But at least I could skim-read the awfulness,” she elaborated. “Whereas, I’m having to listen to it all in the dreary tones of the author. But honestly, I’m not surprised he sounds depressed - it’s autobiographical.”

“Poor man. Poor you. Read something else.”

She looked at him in horror. “I can’t do that! It’s for Book Club! I must finish it.”

Himself knew better than to argue.

“Nearly there, but now there’s a dog in the story and I’ve got a really bad feeling about it..” She shook her head. Himself could empathise, although severe dyslexia made reading an infrequent ordeal, so he was spared that distress. And he’d likely be more puzzled than upset if the ‘dgo’ died. Silver linings.

But films like ‘Open Range’ had almost made him cry and he’d vowed never to watch ‘John Wick’ again. Recently, however, he’d

discovered an early warning system.

“There’s a website called, wait for it, ‘Does the Dog Die.’ You could look up that book and see if there’s great sadness ahead. At least you’d be prepared.” He suggested.

“Next time, I will.” With a look of grim determination, she popped her ear bud back in and Himself watched as she reached for another biscuit, or was it cake... he couldn’t remember what had been decided about Jaffa Cakes.

‘Whatever’, he thought – and reached for one too.

Later, she joined him in the sitting room. “What are we watching?” she asked. “Fishing.” Himself smiled.

She peered at the screen. “Fishing? What’Jaws’!? That’s like saying ‘Deliverance’ is about canoeing.”

“But ’Deliverance’ is about canoeing. Sort of. Anyway, I vaguely remember ‘Jaws’ being largely about fishing and swimming and sailing – plus a shark. And it has a happy ending.”

“Not for Robert Shaw it wasn't. Or the muchmaligned shark,” she snorted.

“Changing the subject, what did you have in mind for supper?” Himself pictured fish and chips and swallowed in anticipation. “I could pause this and get a takeaway if you like.”

“I don’t know why, but I’m not very hungry.”

She raised her eyebrows in puzzlement and Himself chose not to remind her of all the biscuits... cakes... – whatever - she’d eaten.

“But don’t let me stop you,” she said, “although you’ve had a lot of Jaffa Cakes, so maybe

something light. Chicken shish and salad perhaps?” She smiled encouragingly at his disappointed expression and wandered off.

‘Well that, quite literally, takes the biscuit – or cake – whatever’, Himself thought as he shook his head in mild disbelief and tried to get excited about grilled chicken and lettuce.

A few minutes later she re-emerged from the kitchen with a horrified look on her face. “It was me, wasn’t it? I was the one who ate all the cakes, biscuits - whatever. While I was listening to that awful book, I realise I ate nearly a whole packet! No wonder I’m not hungry.”

“Well... I had a couple of biscuits... cakes...whatever, too,” he confessed. “But I’m still a bit peckish.”

When, a little later, Himself returned with fish and chips for one, she announced, “Jaffa Cakes are cakes. I looked it up!”

“Clue was in the name after all,” he commented and settled down happily to eat his supper.

“Looking forward to this,” he said as he pressed

‘play’ to resume watching the film.

She looked up from her new book (a paperback this time) and commented, “And I looked up ‘Jaws’ on that website.”

“And what did it say? ‘Spoiler alert – the shark gets it’?” Himself tucked into his battered cod. She leaned over and pinched a chip. Giving him a pitying look, she whispered, “I’m so sorry.”

Himself, deeply engrossed in the film, dragged his eyes away from the screen and looked at her.

“Sorry? Why?”

“I think the dog dies..”

LAURENCE OXLEY LTD – CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF BUSINESS IN ALRESFORD

Laurence Oxley purchased 17 Broad Street in 1950. The shop space was much smaller then, as the area behind had been used for milking cows when it was Dedman’s Dairy.

An early alteration was to enlarge the 1st floor front window so that Laurence’s piano could be winched inside by a crane! His wife Ursula looked after the shop, selling antiques for the first years, before antiquarian books began to take preference.

The art side of the business was originally started to frame the watercolours and oils that Ursula, a trained artist, was creating. At that time, glass was sourced by recycling from old frames bought at sales. In the 1960s, Ursula co-

minded people and provide you with special solo offers.

Don't wait, let New Era Travel find your dream holiday today! Pop into their shop on West Street, call 01962 396 100, visit neweratravel. co.uk or why not make an appointment if more convenient.

The Chamber is about supporting and celebrating commerce in Alresford and the surrounding areas! Here’s how we do it:

We help to encourage and support local businesses, whether established or startups, to flourish in our vibrant community. We’re committed to maintaining high standards of trading and creating a friendly atmosphere of trust between business owners and the wonderful public they serve. We advocate for our members, making sure their voices are heard by Parliament, government agencies, and local authorities on subjects that matter to them. We enjoy teaming up with the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and other organisations to host social and vocational events that bring us closer together. Our partnerships with local groups focus on community initiatives that benefit everyone because we can achieve more together! We also love giving back to

founded the Alresford Art Society and, as trade grew, George Watson took over responsibility for the picture framing. He built the innovative stands which won prizes at the Alresford Show. Laurence was one of the founders of the Alresford Historical and Literary Society, and its president for many years.

Alresford in the 1950s and 60s was less prosperous than it is now, and Laurence had to travel to buy and sell. This led to participation in international book fairs in Europe, Japan and the USA. Gradually, a coterie of antiques shops was opened in Alresford, once as many as fourteen!

The shop was extended in 1970 to hold art exhibitions, the first being a collection of Victorian watercolours. Over the years, Oxley’s has hosted many exhibitions and events, as well as publishing several books themselves, including a History of Alresford. During the 80s and 90s, the gallery became devoted to watercolours and Laurence’s son Anthony, a Fine Art Guild Commended & Certified Framer, now specialises in the work of Victorian artist Myles Birket Foster, as well as old maps of Hampshire.

All framing continues to be done on the premises. To aid conservation, most work is

the community by supporting local charities through donations and volunteer efforts, as decided by our committee. Promoting Alresford is key to sustaining its lively spirit and economic activity, and we’re all in!

In addition to our exciting activities, we proudly arrange vibrant community events that bring everyone together, such as our delightful Easter Egg Hunt and our thrilling Ghost Hunt - perfect for families and friends alike which encourages the community to walk around the town and support the local shops and businesses. Our "Member of the Month" spotlight showcases a featured member, helping to promote their business and offering them the chance to host a Chamber Chat, enhancing their visibility in our network. Don’t miss our insightful "Ask the Experts" events held twice a year, where you can gain knowledge from our Chamber Committee. Plus, join us for our popular fish and chip supper at the Swan Hotel, where great food meets great company! Let's engage, connect, and celebrate together! Annual membership (1st April – 31st March £60) includes affiliation to the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce.

Anthony’s daughter Imogen is taking on many of the business management responsibilities, and you can now follow Oxley’s on Facebook and Instagram @laurenceoxleyltd to keep up to date with what’s happening, as the business moves into the third generation of family management!

1000 NOT OUT!

Since 2019 Alresford Rotary has been helping small business enterprises in the developing world through the provision of microloans. Run by CARE International UK Lend With Care (LWC) is a revolutionary way to help people to work their way out of poverty with dignity. https://lendwithcare.org/

Through LWC Alresford Rotary lends normally £30 to fund a small business with a short repayment goal of 4-6 months. Once repaid we can recycle the loan to support more low-income entrepreneurs, make a donation or withdraw our funds. Usually, we recycle but on occasions we make donations to LWC to support its provision of the lender portal. The repayment default rate is very low – approx. 1% in number and 0.7% in value. In July Alresford Rotary became the first club in Rotary Wessex (66 clubs) to make 1000 loans.

Over £29,000 has been lent and 7211 entrepreneurs have been helped. The 1000th loan was made to a credit group of five married women in Malawi who, together, support 22 dependant children and run a range of small businesses including selling vegetables, fish, snacks and clothes as well as running restaurants and grocery shops. Their businesses enable them to provide for their families daily needs and support the children’s needs. This has only been possible by your supporting Alresford Rotary – Thank you!

We at the Alresford Pigs never cease to be amazed at the support, and generosity of our local community, but the support we received at this year’s Duck race was truly outstanding.

Our gratitude and thanks go out to all those who came to the event on the day and to all the organisations, and individuals who sponsored a duck, or a race, and to Hydrotech Services for once again being our main sponsor.

We were grateful again for being able to use the lawn, and river frontage, of Weir House and for the wonderfully hot day. The success of this event is in no small part due to all those who give up their time on the day - the Men’s Shed and Lockaway Storage for providing games for the youngsters to play, Sun Hill Infants for various activities like tattoos, and Sun Hill Juniors for the lovely teas and cakes.

The BBQ was provided by C. E. Evans & Sons and kept everyone fed throughout the day, and the ice creams were provided by Maria, and, although there was some queueing, there was plenty of entertainment on hand provided by the Moonroller band.

The bar was also very well used, so much so that we emptied our 3 kegs of the Flower Pots beer in record time, so we had to send the cavalry to get extra supplies, but we don’t think many people noticed as there was so much going on!

The individual races where won by 13 Dahlia, sponsored by Wildbunch Florists, 7 Charlie, sponsored by Cedar Vets, 4 Gangly Goosander, sponsored by The Marshall Family, 16 The Breasted Duck, sponsored by McInnes Meats, 26 Chris P, sponsored by The Stow Family, 21 Ducky McDuckface, sponsored by The Naked

Grape, 17 Dash Van Quack, sponsored by C. E. Evans & Sons, and the Grand Final was won by 8 Sparky Quacksworth, sponsored by Barnes & Liddiard Electrical Contractors. Dave Liddiard receiving the grand final trophy from Manny Zornoza (Chairpig). Congratulations to all the winners, and to those who where lucky enough to place a bet on them.

So, a big thank you to everyone for making it such a successful day and helping us to raise lots of funds to help those in need in our local community. If you, or someone you know, needs our help please get in touch with us, we’re here to help, if we can.
