Following an excellent talk last season on 'Climate Change and Gardening' we welcome back, by popular demand, Claire Mitchell from The Garden Editor who will be giving a talk on 'A Plant a Month’.

Unlike a lot of experts, Claire didn't come from a traditional gardening background. She is an RHS qualified horticulturalist, trained at Royal Botanic Gardens, Edingburgh and Sparsholt College, Hampshire. Claire is always going on extra geeky courses to carry on her learning to pass it on to her clients and loves making things simple, easy and effective for modern living. After her talk there will be, as usual, a cup of tea and biscuits.

A PASSION FOR BACH IN ROMSEY ABBEY

Looking forward to Easter 2026, a rare chance to hear JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion with a stellar line-up of soloists: Katharine Fuge, Malachy Frame, Jessica Gillingwater and Gareth Brynmor John and also showcasing rising stars including Sebastian Hill as Evangelist, a role that he is becoming increasingly renown for. Cold Turkey

“I never want to see another pig in a blanket,” she groaned, pulling at the waistband of her leggings. “Or a prawn in a duvet. In fact, food wearing any type of bedding will never again pass my lips. Ever.” She looked at Himself over the half-undecorated Christmas tree, expecting him to agree. He didn’t look entirely convinced, though, it had to be said. Twelfth Night had arrived; the goblins would be watching and waiting to possess those decorations left up. At least, Himself was just superstitious enough to insist that the decs were all down and back in their boxes before January 6th. “Just in case,” he said. “Would you like a glass of Baileys?” He offered, tentatively. At her horrified expression, he quickly muttered, “no, silly idea.” Baileys in cocktails, Baileys in hot chocolate, Baileys on ice-cream even – all these had not only seemed perfectly reasonable during Christmas – they’d been mandatory. During New Year too. Right up to the day she went back to work, in fact. But now the thought of alcoholic beverages of any description, sickly, sticky or fizzy, was something she was filing away in a mental drawer labelled, ‘Open in Case of Emergency and/or Burns Night’. Christmas had cantered off for another year, escorted by a herd of illuminated reindeer - and the decs were down at last. One final sprig of the jolly holly that had adorned the pictures was crackling on the fire with the remnants of the Yule log. Wrapping paper, cards and crackers bought in the sales, had been packed away with the decorations – to be rediscovered with surprise and delight next December. Yuletide was gone, but by no means forgotten. A constant reminder of those (not-very-much-salad) days of carefree supping, sipping and snacking, was the uncomfortable snugness of her work wardrobe. The gym membership deals that once flooded her inbox had dried up. The particularly good value ‘twelve days of Christmas’ package would have been handy about now, she thought. Of course, when it had arrived in an email twelve days before Christmas, she’d barely had time to draw one breath, let alone a quick succession of them, panting on a treadmill. “How about a Quality Street? They’re mostly strawberry and orange, your favourites.” Himself waved the mauve container vaguely in her direction and she thought she might heave. “No?” he murmured as she shuddered and turned a delicate shade of pistachio.

The next morning she dragged the exercise bike into the conservatory from the shed. “It’s going to be lettuce for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” she announced from her seat, pedalling furiously. As Himself and the spaniels exchanged mournful looks, she conceded, “well, maybe not breakfast..” She’d dusted off the hand weights too and was now stood in the kitchen doing bicep curls and lateral raises. “Five-a-day isn’t the thing, you know – it’s more like seven – or even ten a day! Perhaps vegetarian’s the way to go..” The dogs hoped she didn’t mean them and slunk off to their bed. But Himself was very much afraid that she might mean him and sat down at the kitchen table. “That’s a lot of fibre, darling.” He shifted uncomfortably and reached for a satsuma, thinking he ought to make a start. “I’m going to jog around the block with the dogs and then I’ll construct a healthy meal plan.” There was something evangelical in her energy and Himself felt overcome with weariness just watching her stride out of the front door. He mourned the passing of the festive season and very much fancied a Baileys to go with his Quality Street. There was that nice pie in the fridge that he’d been hoping was for dinner, too. Maybe with some chips.. But her enthusiasm knew no limits. Back from her jog, she bounded out of the door and leapt into her car, returning from the supermarket in no time with the entire vegetable section - and salad stuffs of types he’d never seen before. And hoped he’d never see again. He took himself off for a bath, having smuggled a little glass of something and a few foil-wrapped somethings into the bathroom beforehand. As he lay in his steamy den, sipping and chewing by turn, he once again heard the whirr of the exercise bike. And sighed. Sometime later, after a watery nap and a change of clothes, he sauntered into the kitchen to be greeted by an unexpectedly savoury smell. The table was laid. Things looked promising. “Starving!” She announced, getting the pie out of the oven. “All that exercise just made me hungry. I mean,” she put a large dish of broccoli and peas on the table next to the chips, “I do think we should up our vegetable intake. But,” she said, dishing up hot turkey and ham pie, “let’s not go cold turkey.”

Protecting your sight: Why OCT scans should be part of every eye test Many serious eye diseases begin quietly, without pain, discomfort or any noticeable changes to your vision. Conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease can progress for years before symptoms develop, by which point damage may already be irreversible. That’s why early detection is one of the most powerful tools we have for protecting eyesight — and why OCT scanning has become such an essential part of modern, forward-thinking eye care. An OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan is a quick, completely painless technology that allows us to look beneath the surface of the eye in extraordinary detail. While a traditional retinal photograph captures a flat image of the back of the eye, an OCT scan goes several steps further. It creates a cross-sectional, 3D-style view of the retina, allowing us to examine the layers beneath where early signs of disease often appear. In simple terms, it’s a bit like having an ultrasound or MRI for the eye — but far more precise. The process is easy. You simply sit in front of a camera-like device for a few moments while it scans each eye. There’s no contact, no drops and no discomfort. But the amount of information it gives us is remarkable. Subtle swelling, thinning, fluid build-up or structural changes that could indicate the very earliest stages of disease all become visible long before they would show up on a standard image or cause you any symptoms. Test Valley Borough Council has launched a twostage tender process to appoint a contractor for the build of Andover’s new theatre, as demolition work on the former Poundstretcher site is due to complete in the new year. Specialist demolition contractor, Erith, has been on site since October, carefully dismantling the vacant retail unit to leave a clear site ready for development. The council is now seeking to appoint a contractor to deliver pre-construction services and a main works package for the new theatre. This will become the future home of The Lights,

CURTIS MUSEUM & ALLEN GALLERY Rediscovering the Allen Gallery Alton’s Allen Gallery is an intimate setting for one of the nation’s most outstanding collections of ceramics. Since autumn 2022, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Hampshire Cultural Trust has been working to rediscover the Allen Gallery for the people of Alton and the surrounding area, building partnerships with local organisations, hosting workshops, talks, films and undertaking auditing and research to tell the stories of the objects on display. The Gallery closed at the end of 2025 for a major refurbishment and is expected to reopen in early 2027. While the weather is cold and daylight scarce, there’s a quiet sense of renewal beneath the surface. At Hampshire Gardens Trust, we encourage everyone to take inspiration from Hampshire’s historic landscapes — but the same principles of care and preparation start right at home in our own gardens. Winter Woodland Lights event promises bigger, brighter January 2026 spectacle Already established as a popular January mood-enhancing event, ‘Winter Woodland Lights’ owl flying displays at the Hawk Conservancy Trust are being reimagined for their fifth year and promise to be the UK’s most immersive illuminated wildlife experience. Organisers at the bird of prey visitor centre near Andover, Hampshire, are busy building on the popularity of past years to create an even more stunning spectacle in the heart of nature. There will be new special sound, light and even dramatic weather effects ensuring the 13-night run of displays is unlike any other winter illuminations experience. “We’re combining low-flying owl encounters, beautifully-lit woodland, atmospheric music, storytelling and special effects like never before,” said Tom Morath, Deputy Head of Living Collection for the Hawk Conservancy Trust and creative lead for the Winter Woodland Lights event. “The whole team, including our cast of stunning owls is coming together to create a memorable experience that we hope will deepen the appreciation of the natural world in return for warming hearts and brightening moods in the midst of winter darkness.” Ticket sales for the event generate vital income for the Trust’s conservation and research work as a bird of prey charity, running and assisting with numerous projects across the UK and overseas. These can range from population monitoring and support for various UK species to conserving vultures facing extinction in Africa. As a result, anyone booking a visit to Winter Woodland Lights is benefitting the natural world as well as giving themselves a mid-winter treat. Winter salad of curried parsnips, leeks and chickpeas A winter salad is a wonderful thing. This is a recipe from Rebecca at Open House Deli in Winchester for a wintry mix of curried parsnips, leeks and tasty, nutririous chickpeas! Perfect for that January detox.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 2 parsnips, cut in half lengthways and into strips • 1 leek • 1 tin of chickpeas • 1 tsp garam masala • 1 tsp curry powder • 25g dessicated coconut • 50g rocket • Juice of 1 lemon • 2cm ginger, grated • 1 tsp tumeric • 2 tbsp tahini • 1 clove of garlic • Olive oil • Salt

Preheat oven to 190c. Place the parsnips on a roasting tray, coat in garam masala, curry powder, olive oil and salt; roast for 30 minutes. Add the leeks in for the last 10 minutes until golden. In a separate tray, toss the chickpeas in salt and oil, roast for 20 minutes. Place the coconut in a pan and dry fry for 5 minutes until toasted. In a blender, mix the lemon, ginger, turmeric, salt and garlic. Add a small amount of water to thin. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Transfer to a serving bowl, layer the dressing throughout. Sprinkle some toasted coconut on top.

The election of the Mayor for Hampshire and the Solent has been postponed! Do we care?

recent revelations by the Local Government Association about so many Councils on the verge of bankruptcy is an issue that has not surfaced. The lack of cash to deliver essential services remains a very important concern. HMG are promising that the money they allocated for devolution will still find its way into Hampshire – various figures have been spoken about but in terms of the really pressing needs around for example Social Care – there is deathly silence!

he Government have postponed the first stage of the Devolution process till May 2028. Only recently the various political parties announced their candidates and were working towards an election next year. If my memory serves me well and I am not sure it does these days, there will however be Hampshire County Council elections next May – I think these were postponed form last May as part of the Devolution process. I summary then – the current consultation on what will replace both our County Council, the Districts and the two cities will end in early January. Hopefully as many people as possible have responded to this and answered the questions on-line. Sometime during 2026 HMG will announce what the new Unitary Councils for our homeland will be with “shadow elections” taking place in May 2027. The postponement has certainly caused a bit of an outcry particularly from some of the candidates. One can certainly understand this as some threw their hats in

the ring a while ago and were gearing up their teams for action. Maybe the recent publicity we have had about the postponement will revive some interest in this innovation. Neither the consultation about the new Councils or the Mayor has got the heart racing. What is concerning is that after postponing one set of elections to bring forward the Devolution agenda it has happened again. There is certainly nothing wrong with HMG changing their mind as having the new Councils up and running will give the new Mayor some vital established partners. Also, it does create some muchneeded stability at a time of huge challenge for local Council Members and staff. Hopefully the timetable with NOT change again. Clearly the recent decisions in Surrey where HMG had to write off the huge debt of one of the District Councils and bring forward the creation of the new Unitary Councils in the area – is bit like closing the stable door after the money runs out. Would it not be logical to address the financial position of all the Councils involved before the new Councils start work? There is a bit of “jam tomorrow” in some of the current thinking by HMG – some savings could come from the various Council mergers – but these will not be available immediately. Also, the rising cost of delivering both essential and other services will soon wipe this away. Hopefully there is still time for this vital issue to be dealt with.
