The town of Kepa Kurl Esperance lies on Australia’s Southern Ocean coast, on the land of the Wudjari Nyungar people. Kepa Kurl (pronounced ‘Kep-pa Kurl’) is the Wudjari name for Esperance meaning ‘where the waters lie like boomerangs.’ Celebrated for its snow-white beaches, wild winds and intense blue waters, this is a place of wild landscapes and of many stories.
Over the past three years, FORM Building a State of Creativity has journeyed with the people of Kepa Kurl Esperance through a revelatory and rewarding conversation about sense of place and identity, and how a prospective installation project might respond to place. This exhibition has been inspired by that conversation.
Showcasing a variety of mediums including metal, glass and timber sculptures, paintings, photography, film, and videography, The Spirit of Kepa Kurl Esperance is the latest exhibition in FORM’s Southern Exposure series about the people and creativity of the State’s southern regions.
