The artists of Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Country
Since colonial settlement, the west Pilbara town of Roebourne has had a long and controversial history. The Traditional Owners, the Ngarluma people, call it Ieramagadu.
Today, it is a melting pot of language groups, and several art centres in and around the town nurture significant numbers of the Pilbara’s most innovative artists.
The artworks in Where We Come From show the richness of artistic expression emerging from this region, and reveal layers of lived experience, memory, and history. The stories shared are as varied as they are personal, yet they resonate with us all: identity, struggle, joy, resilience, and belonging.

In 2019, Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi artists invited FORM to help support and develop their professional skills and profile.
As well as facilitating practices in canvas, glass, printmaking, photography and ceramics, FORM’s Roebourne Art Development Program has also helped the art centres of the west Pilbara strengthen their business, curatorial and administrative models. In the past year, many independent artists have joined the program.
This exhibition is part of an ongoing arts and professional development trajectory for the communities in the region, with much enthusiasm for future local exhibitions and activation of local spaces. Artists are engaging with the program’s professional development and capacity building opportunities, empowering communities in creating the culture they want to see and share in their communities.
