Until then, the Roys led a peaceful existence in a house in Sevran, a Parisian suburb. Though traditionally Catholic, they never tried to restrain their son’s conversion, in spite of growing doubts, to the point of accompanying him in his new faith—out of tolerance, then probably out of fear of losing him. C’est par un message lapidaire sur WhatsApp que Véronique Roy apprend en janvier 2016 la nouvelle du décès de Quentin, son fils cadet de 23 ans, quelque part entre la Syrie et l’Irak. Avec son mari Thierry et son aîné Yannis, elle avait vu sa vie chamboulée par le départ soudain de Quentin en septembre 2014. Jusque-là, les Roy menaient une existence tranquille dans un pavillon de Sevran, en banlieue parisienne. De tradition catholique, ils n’ont, malgré les doutes grandissants, jamais freiné les envies de conversion de leur fils jusqu’à l’accompagner – par souci de tolérance, puis sans doute par peur de le perdre – dans sa nouvelle foi. Mais, très vite, ils se sont trouvés dépassés par sa radicalisation. Véronique Roy est directrice de clientèle dans un magazine de santé. Elle vit avec sa famille en Seine-Saint-Denis.
