ALDER CREEK ELEMENTARY IS ON IT'S WAY UP

Exciting news! Alder Creek Elementary School is rising swiftly in Folsom Ranch. The school, designed by Rainforth Grau Architects, will open in the summer of 2024, serving students from TK to 5th grade. Its 80,000 square feet facility, similar to Mangini Ranch Elementary, is taking shape as planned, with a sports field and play areas included.

Funding for Alder Creek comes from Measure M Bond funds, state funds, bonds, and developer fees, thanks to our supportive community. More is in store for Folsom Ranch, with plans for a third high school, a middle school, and a total of five elementary schools, all funded similarly.

The Folsom Cordova Unified School District is exploring the possibility of reorganizing into two districts for better education. They plan to conduct a feasibility study, supported by Folsom City Council and the City of Rancho Cordova, sharing the cost. This step will create a more personalized and focused educational experience.

Our community of approximately 82,000 in Folsom and 81,000 in Rancho Cordova is embracing the promise of a brighter future for our children. Let's foster an inclusive environment, empowering students to become tomorrow's leaders. Stay tuned for updates on our educational journey!

NO CHALLENGE TOO SMALL OR PEAK TOO HIGH

Vivek's dedication to his goals is truly admirable. He sets high standards for himself and works diligently to achieve them. Whether it's conquering a challenging hiking trail, excelling in his studies, or improving his skills in sports, Vivek approaches each endeavor with focus and determination.

Babu Neelam, an Indian native who later moved to the USA, harbored a deep passion for an active lifestyle even after his relocation. Babu, a Software Engineer at Salesforce, and his wife Jayasri, a homemaker, brought up their three boys – Vivek (11), Vishwas (6), and Vijay (5) – in the Bay Area and later in Folsom.

Babu's love for outdoor activities like biking, running, and swimming remained undiminished. The allure of San Francisco's mountains and trails captivated him, and his eldest son, Vivek, shared his zest for adventure. Together, they conquered numerous trails and even scaled Lassen Peak when Vivek was just 4.5 years old.

A promise made to his nephew set Babu on a course to embark on an epic adventure. Proposing an expedition to Everest Base Camp (EBC), Babu's enthusiasm inspired Vivek and his nephews to join. Battling challenges during the trek, Vivek's determination shone, culminating in their successful EBC summit in 2022, when Vivek was only 10 years old.

This experience transformed Vivek, boosting his self-confidence and attitude. He tackled challenging hikes effortlessly and expressed interest in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Despite setbacks due to a fractured toe, Vivek's determination prevailed, and in July 2023, he and Babu summited Kilimanjaro, leaving an indelible mark on their journey.

Vivek's adventurous spirit ignited a passion in his younger brothers and friends, fostering bonds and inspiring future explorers. Beyond hiking, Vivek excelled in academics, favoring subjects like social studies and science. He exhibited a voracious appetite for knowledge, avidly reading, and delving into various hobbies like soccer, swimming, biking, and painting.

Vivek's dedication, whether in conquering hiking trails, excelling in studies, or pursuing his hobbies, resonated with everyone around him. His family's support and his goal-oriented mindset ensured a bright future for this young adventurer, where his determination and passion would undoubtedly continue to shine.

THE MAGIC AT CRYSTAL BASIN

F or families residing in the picturesque town of Folsom, CA, the allure of the great outdoors is hard to resist. Just an hour's drive away lies a hidden gem that not only promises an escape into nature's embrace but is also a cost-effective adventure – the Crystal Basin Recreation Area near Lake Tahoe.

WHAT IS DISPERSED CAMPING?

Dispersed camping is the term used for camping outside of designated campgrounds. It's a chance to move away from the manicured grounds, crowded RV spots, and communal campfire rings, and truly find your own slice of wilderness. And the best part? It's absolutely free!

WHY CRYSTAL BASIN?

Crystal Basin, with its sprawling forests, serene lakes, and awe-inspiring views, is a haven for those seeking an authentic outdoor experience. The lack of amenities, while initially seeming like a challenge, soon turns into its greatest asset. Without the distractions of modern comforts, families can engage more deeply with their surroundings and each other.

20 | 21

Being just a short one-hour drive from Folsom, it's the perfect spot for weekend getaways. My 12-year-old's eyes light up with the joy of discovery, adventure and excitement every time we spot a curious critter, hear a new birdcall, play in the water, and gaze at the beautiful star filled sky at night by the campfire.

ACTIVITIES GALORE:

From hiking and fishing to stargazing and storytelling, Crystal Basin offers endless activities. My son and I have spent countless hours exploring trails, identifying plants, and just lying down on our backs, watching the starry expanse.

A BONDING EXPERIENCE:

Away from screens and schedules, dispersed camping offers uninterrupted quality time. The shared tasks of setting up camp, cooking meals over an open flame, or simply enjoying the silent beauty of nature, have all contributed to strengthening the bond I share with my son.

USEFUL MAP TIP:

The US Forest Service offers fantastic FREE maps that are perfect for adventurous families. These maps highlight beautiful wilderness trails and secret camping spots that you won't find on your usual driving map apps. These special maps are called “Motor Vehicle Use Maps”. For those considering the Crystal Basin area, look for the “Eldorado MVUM: Pacific” map. For old-school explorers, you can grab these paper maps at no cost from the Ranger stations. For those who love combining tech with nature, the Avenza app

allows you to download these maps for free. The best part? While using the app, it will show your exact location on the map without needing any cell service, using only your phone’s GPS. It's like a magic compass in your pocket! So gear up, brush up on those map-reading skills, and embark on a memorable family adventure!

For families in Folsom looking for a quick, free, and enriching getaway, the Crystal Basin Recreation Area is the place to be. It offers an unmatched mix of adventure, tranquility, and bonding. So pack up your tents, gather your loved ones, and discover the joys of dispersed camping at Crystal Basin.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR DISPERSED CAMPING:

1. Prepare Well: With the lack of amenities, ensure you pack all essentials. A good quality tent, sleeping bags, and sufficient food and water are paramount.

2. Offline Navigation: Before heading out, download offline maps on Google Maps, or Avenza Maps that allow you to use the map with only GPS and no cell signal. Carrying a GPS device can also be invaluable for navigating unfamiliar terrain.

3. Leave No Trace: Respect nature by cleaning up after yourselves. What you carry in, make sure you carry out.

4. Safe Campfire Practices: Always check fire regulations. If fires are permitted, ensure they're fully extinguished before leaving or sleeping.

5. Wildlife Awareness: This is their home. Store food and scented items securely and maintain a safe distance.
