The workshop of Martin Foessleitner in Vitebsk State University was an unforgettable and invaluable experience of the real-world design process for the students of the faculty of Graphics and Fine Arts. The topic of the workshop “Vitebsk – the town of UNOVIS” is truly meaningful for the cultural capital our country. Therefore, it was pretty important for us to learn the survey results of our citizens and newcomers on the familiarity with this art trend. In quite short terms with intense setting the students explored the problem, interviewed people on the streets, generated unique project ideas, tested and presented them. Besides, It was a pleasure to see joyful and smiley faces of students during the workshop. I appreciate all the participants of the workshop for their creativity and activism. Special thanks for Martin for bringing his fairy-tail design world to the students and our department. Julia Bezhenar, Dean of the faculty of Graphics and Fine Arts, Ph.D. in education, Associate Professor.

The project «Design Jam 2018», which was held in Vitebsk on June 20-22, was one of the most striking events in the life of the students of Art and Graphics Faculty of the Vitebsk State University named after P. M. Masherov in recent years. Having combined the following departments – «Fine Arts and Technical Graphics» and «Design (Subjective and spatial environment)», we created working groups that worked fruitfully for three days for the benefit of our city and its visual communication. Workshops with Martin Foessleitner demonstrated a completely different approach in the process of teaching designers. It consists of using the design-thinking method, the main idea of which is the development of a product or service, oriented to the consumer. As a result, students didn’t solve their own problems, they solved the problems of other people. Observing the inhabitants of Vitebsk, their actions, their relationship with the outside world, by empathy the guys understood the consumer’s thoughts, feelings and needs. Confidential conversation helped future designers to find the right way to interact with people and offer innovative solutions.

We defined the title of workshops as «Vitebsk is the city of UNOVIS», because of our desire to popularize knowledge about this movement in the society, including city guests. For three days we plunged into the problems of citizens, led an external and internal dialogues, looked at different situations with «fresh eyes». As a result, the residents enjoyed the practical results so much that we had an idea to promote them in the contest «100 ideas for Belarus». Workshops gave me and our students incredible emotions, a lot of positive emotions, faith in the people’s possibilities and the desire to improve ourselves constantly. Martin showed how important is to establish partnerships between the student and the teacher, how to rationally use working time, what opportunities we have working in groups, convinced of the effectiveness of studying the problem of the product’s consumers through interviews, showed the importance of testing the results. I thank Martin Foessleitner, who impressed us with his sincerity, dedication, desire to share his knowledge and work with students! Many thanks to him for choosing us! Tatsiana Manuiko, the senior lecturer of design at Vitebsk State University.

Vitebsk, a city with many treasures to discover, a hidden jewel, home of Unovis and Suprematism. As a starting point a beautiful and smart designed and curated museum, meeting the challenge to exhibit an art movement without the masterpieces and succeeding in making the story understandable and enjoyable. UNOVIS today finds its successors in a young, open-minded and talented community of students, being aware of the cultural heritage with the big ambition to transform it in a contemporary style, attitude and movement. Guided and assisted by the local State University giving - in the same way as almost 100 vears ago a platform for exchange, science and collaboration to continue the narrative of UNOVIS and making Vitebsk and its citizens proud of its identity as a place of arts, skills and public creativity. Thank you all for the big pleasure being with you, the nice hospitality and careful preparations, Tatsiana for managing every detail and coaching the students, Uladzislau for assisting in language and methodology and Mikhael & Barbara, as well Vladimir and Julia for making it happen. Martin Foessleitner, hi-pe.at, designaustria Vienna

UNOVIS

VITEBSK 1919

UNOVIS was a short-lived but influential group of artists, founded and led by Kazimir Malevich at the Vitebsk Art School in 1919. Initially formed by students and known as MOLPOSNOVIS, the group formed to explore and develop new theories and concepts in art. Under the leadership of Malevich they renamed to UNOVIS, chiefly focusing on his ideas on Suprematism and producing a number of projects and publications whose influence on the avant-garde in Russia and abroad was immediate and far-reaching. In early 1920, Marc Chagall selected Malevich to succeed him as director. Malevich accepted and radically reorganized not only UNOVIS but the entire school‘s curriculum. He transformed UNOVIS into a highly structured organization, forming the UNOVIS Council. Meanwhile, the group‘s theories and styles were rapidly evolving at the hands of Malevich and his star students and colleagues, including notable Russian artists El Lissitzky, Lazar Khidekel, Nikolai Suetin, Ilia Chashnik, Vera Ermolaeva, Anna Kagan, and Lev Yudin (ru), amongst others. The group‘s objective was now to introduce Suprematist designs and

ideals to Russian society, working with and for the Soviet government. In June 1920 UNOVIS‘s ambitions accelerated, culminating in a print collection of UNOVIS philosophies and theories such as Lazar Khidekel and Ilya Chashnik, AERO: Articles and Designs (Vitebsk, UNOVIS. 1920), and participation in the „First All-Russian Conference of Teachers and Students of Arts,“ which took place in Moscow. UNOVIS students who made the trip from Vitebsk to Moscow rapidly distributed artworks, newsletters, manifestos, flyers, and copies of Malevich‘s „On New Systems in Art“ and „UNOVIS Almanac.“ UNOVIS succeeded in achieving recognition and became respected as an established and influential movement.

Hello, this is V-team, we are from Vitebsk. Homeland of the legendary UNOVIS. As it turned out. Many people in our city do not know what UNOVIS is. This really upset us, and we decided to create UNOVISation. What is UNOVISation? Upgrade for UNOVIS. Creating UNOVIS of the future, more fashionable and modern. Clear for people. Also, UNOVISation includes the very process of disseminating UNOVIS ideas and involving people in this topic.

How will it look? We wanted to convey the stylistics of UNOVIS in every detail, namely:

All of our ideas were drawn from the creative museum ambiance, we were inspired by the atmosphere and paid great attention to every little detail.

Vitebsk 2018

The intuitive form must come out from nothing. Similar to how the mind works - creating things for the use of life, drawing them from nothing and refining them.

We have decided to demonstrate our work to the visitors and personnel of the museum, and received many positive responses.

The application is obviously very useful. I am sure of its uniqueness and I doubt you will ďŹ nd anything alike in a dierent museum. Call the programmers!

Director of the museum, Andrey Dukhovnikov

Here everything is simple. I like it and it is interesting. I believe that a lot of people will take interest in it.

Museum sta, Maxim

We would very much like to see the ÂŤSuprematismÂť art direction not to get lost in the flow of time, but to attract more attention of the masses.

Art has no future or past, therefore it is eternal, hodiernal. - Kazimir Malevich -
