A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Leadership shows up in many forms. Sometimes, it’s bold and farreaching, like the financial backing and strong collaboration behind Innovate28, uniting over 100 companies and demonstrating leadership across Cass and Clay counties. Other times, it’s more subtle, seen in the way individuals guide their teams or show up with dedication each day.

True leadership begins with leading yourself. To effectively guide others, we must first invest in our own growth. As Admiral William McRaven, a past Voices of Vision speaker, wisely said, “If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right. If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” This speaks to the power of discipline – embracing the mundane or difficult tasks that build resilience and lay the foundation for long-term success. As a community, we’ve seen a growing commitment to personal development, recognizing that leaders can only give their best when they first invest in themselves.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Vince Lombardi, a legendary coach known for his relentless pursuit of excellence, leading the Green Bay Packers to five championships in seven years. He famously said, "Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile." This reminds us that leadership is not about seeking the spotlight, but about the dedication, discipline and effort we bring each day. Whether in the bold visions we pursue together or the small, everyday actions that inspire those around us, true leadership is built through consistent, purposeful work.

We’ve built programs like Leadership FMWF, Women Connect, Young Professionals Network and Voices of Vision to empower emerging leaders and shape the next generation. Our commitment to leadership development spans all levels — from K-12 students to professionals in our workforce. We aim to be a trusted resource for those passionate about growing as leaders and strengthening leadership across our region, offering programs and opportunities that support individuals at every stage of their journey.

When you read this Bridge and attend Voices of Vision this April, you’ll hear powerful stories of triumph and perseverance from leaders across our region — just like Erin's journey of resilience. Their experiences, challenges and hard-earned lessons will inspire you, and we hope they ignite something meaningful in your own life.

Sincerely,

Shannon Full President and CEO Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce

SETH C. DAGGETT

Like many others, I left college relatively undecided as far as where I wanted to go with my career, and the insurance industry was completely off my radar as far as my potential options at that time. I started my career out of college working in public accounting. While it was a great initial learning experience, I quickly found myself looking for a change from the extremely long hours, often mundane work and hectic travel schedule that’s common in that industry.

I ultimately decided to take a chance on an opportunity to transition over to an internal audit position at a large property and casualty insurance carrier that allowed me to leverage my finance and accounting skills while gaining exposure to a variety of other operational aspects of the business. Over 20 years later, I’ve come to appreciate the many benefits of working in the industry and the opportunity to be involved with truly impactful work. This work plays a vital role in helping individuals and businesses recover from losses and manage risks, making a difference by protecting people, communities and businesses.

How do you define success in your role, and how has that definition evolved over time?

I view success as having satisfaction with knowing you have maximized your efforts to become the best person you are capable of becoming in all aspects of life. Every person is gifted with unique skills and interests, and true success comes down to recognizing and utilizing those gifts.

As CEO, my goal is to ultimately leave the organization in a better spot than where I started, while doing whatever I can to help others achieve their full potential and individual successes along the way.

What is your long-term vision for Nodak Insurance Company?

My long-term vision for our business is to continue to build a financially secure and sustainable organization, enabling us to take care of those we are privileged to serve, including our policyholders, employees and shareholders. It’s our responsibility to help our customers recover in a time of need, provide them with security to invest in their families and businesses, and to give back to our local communities where we live and work.

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business?

One of the greatest leadership lessons I’ve learned is the importance of building a team with people smarter and more capable than yourself, and who operate with integrity, humility and a competitive mindset. It’s also crucial to lead with questions, not answers, and strive to create a culture where everyone has the opportunity to be heard.

What’s one innovation or strategy that has had a significant impact on your business’s growth?

The insurance industry has numerous unique challenges, including thousands of competitors and distribution channels, relative ease of entry and products that are generally difficult for customers to differentiate. In this type of commoditylike business, it can be challenging for smaller companies such as ourselves to compete against the larger national carriers who have immense resources. It’s critical that we continue to find ways to add value and differentiate ourselves from our competitors, including leveraging our strong relationships with the North Dakota Farm Bureau and our talented employees and agents across the state, as well as providing unmatched customer service to our policyholders. We need to do all that we can to protect and expand these relationships while also identifying other unique growth opportunities that complement this core business.

How does Nodak Insurance Company contribute to the local community’s growth?

Our business contributes to local community growth in a number of ways, including encouraging economic stability, supporting business growth and job creation, facilitating community resilience, and promoting public safety and general risk awareness. Our employees and agents also generously give their time and money back to a wide range of local organizations across the state, which is a core aspect of our mission and something we prioritize and enjoy doing.

What’s one thing you’re most excited about for the future of your company, and how are you preparing for it?

I’m looking forward to pursuing a renewed focus on growing our business in North Dakota, supported by an expanded presence in Fargo. We want our Fargo headquarters to be the best place to work in the area, while continuing to leverage the knowledge and experience of our employees and agents, and expand our relationships with universities in the state.

What advice would you give to the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders?

Be mindful and disciplined with how you spend the hours you have each day. Hold yourself accountable for completing the highest priority items early in the day. Prioritize being physically active and investing time into personal relationships and networking. Strive to use your phone as a useful tool instead of a mindless distraction that takes valuable time away from your priorities. Personally, I've also found that investing time into podcasts, reading and listening to public investor calls related to industries or areas of interest are great uses of time.

" I VIEW SUCCESS AS HAVING SATISFACTION WITH KNOWING YOU HAVE MAXIMIZED YOUR EFFORTS TO BECOME THE BEST PERSON YOU ARE CAPABLE OF BECOMING IN ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE. EVERY PERSON IS GIFTED WITH UNIQUE SKILLS AND INTERESTS , AND TRUE SUCCESS COMES DOWN TO RECOGNIZING AND UTILIZING THOSE GIFTS. "

DARRIN PETERSON

Ihave been fortunate to grow my career at Marvin, which is a manufacturer of premium windows and doors, and it’s also a family-owned and -led business. In my more than 35 years of service with the company, I’ve benefited from the opportunity to work with multiple generations of Marvin family leaders. In that time, I’ve repeatedly witnessed the power of relationships as an essential constant for success.

I believe we are at our best when people and culture come first. At Marvin, we prioritize our culture and how we work equally with what we do and the tangible outputs of what we make. In doing so, we’ve intentionally fostered and developed a place where people are able to grow their careers while we’ve simultaneously continued to innovate and grow. Being part of an organization that is able to do both is my definition of success, and I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish with that thoughtful formula.

What is your long-term vision for Marvin, and how does that align with your commitment to the community?

As a more than century-old company, Marvin has had and continues to believe in long-term visions that span decades – even generations. As we look to the future, we are committed to being a great employer and a special place to work where people come first. In addition, we are focused on delivering the premier window and door experience to our dealer partners and trade customers nationwide. This ensures that we will deliver profitable and sustainable growth which will allow us to continue to serve our communities in a variety of ways as both an employer and an active participant in the places where we live and work. We believe that when companies are truly people-centered, there are enormous benefits for all.

What excites you about the future of Marvin?

Marvin has been through a period of tremendous growth, and we’re not slowing down anytime soon. I’m incredibly excited for the expansions that have accelerated our capabilities, from new distribution centers in Reno, Nevada and Windsor, Connecticut to our soon-to-open manufacturing facility in Kansas City, Kansas. These allow us to better serve our customers, meet growing demand in the marketplace and provide our teams with ongoing career growth opportunities.

I am also energized by our reputation in the marketplace, and the strength of our partnerships with the independent dealers and suppliers who help make it all possible. And above all, I’m excited by the outcome of our efforts to manage Marvin in a way that allows us to continue to invest in our employees, communities and partners, ensuring we’re fulfilling our purpose of imagining and creating better ways of living for millions along the way.

What advice would you give to the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders?

I encourage the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders to build relationships and network early and often. You will also never regret committing to continuous learning, acting as a student of your industry and the world at large.

But above all, I often tell people that your mission is bigger than yourself. Find your mission, your passion, and make it larger than you – and that’s where you’ll find success. It might be inventing something, investing in people, changing the world. When you find your passion, you’ll find success.

More than 30 years ago, Marvin pioneered the use of fiberglass in the fenestration industry. That innovation began right here in Fargo, where the idea for our proprietary pultruded fiberglass, Ultrex®, first came to life. When we first got started, we certainly didn’t know that we had begun what would soon be the fastest growing material category in the industry. We’re incredibly proud of the materials, science, ingenuity and creativity that began right here and continues to be an industry leader, serving thousands of homeowners across the country.

As a practicing primary care provider for the first 30 years of my career, I measured success based on my individual encounters with patients – did I address their concerns, treat them with empathy, keep them safe and communicate clearly? Today, what I measure as success looks quite a bit different, as I’m no longer responsible for just myself and my patients.

In my current role as the chief physician for the Sanford Fargo Region, I oversee more than 1,150 physicians and advanced practice providers across eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. As you can imagine, the shift in my work from the clinic exam room to the C-suite has significantly broadened my perception of success to include much larger initiatives, like building a positive culture to help retain our providers. One of the ways I’ve worked to do this is by being a leader that values humility.

Over the years, an important lesson I learned has been to accept that not every decision I make, or support, turns out to be correct. Being a great leader is not just about being right – you must be able to admit when you are wrong and show transparency, accountability and an eagerness to learn. I’ve found that incorporating these values into my leadership style has gone a long way toward building relationships and trust with the providers I work with. As a result of this effort and many more, our organization has continued to foster a positive work environment and trend better than the national average for clinician turnover.

Alongside retaining providers, recruiting new ones and growing our workforce is essential for success. I’ve been proud to help our organization find ways to improve recruitment by meeting with legislators to advocate for resolutions to the roadblocks we face and help form relationships with local colleges and universities to build the next generation of health care professionals. A cornerstone of our efforts that I’m incredibly proud of is the 13 residency and fellowship programs we run in collaboration with the University of North Dakota. These programs helped us train more than 150 residents and fellows in 2024 alone, and I’m very excited to continue growing that number with two additional fellowships launching in 2026.

While clinician recruitment and retention are newer measures of success in my tenure, a constant that has remained throughout my career is working to make advanced care more accessible. As chief physician, I’m now doing this on a much larger scale by helping complete the behind-the-scenes work to bring new services to patients across our region. Just last year, we introduced several new offerings, including a hospital-at-home program, a substance use disorder clinic and Da Vinci 5 robots, the most advanced, minimally invasive surgical system in the world.

I am incredibly proud of these achievements and look forward to continuing to develop our workforce, cutting-edge services and top-notch primary care offerings. Every community, rural or urban, needs access to health care to prosper, and it’s an honor to know that, through success in my work, I can help make that a reality.

DOUG GRIFFIN, MD

OJAY EVANS

ne of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that a business should exist to serve, guide and lead its customers through a journey—offering a unique, scalable product or service. This perspective keeps me grounded during the inevitable struggles, failures and long nights. It reminds me that the effort is worth it when you’re part of something larger than yourself. Embracing a servant-leader mentality has been transformative, enabling me to lead with purpose and contribute meaningfully to the FMWF community and beyond.

In a time when our nation and communities face division and challenges, how do you believe we can overcome these obstacles and come together to create lasting change?

In challenging times, it’s often the greats—the exceptional individuals and organizations—who lead from the front. They’re not afraid to take risks, stand out and innovate to grow their brands, businesses or themselves. From a marketing standpoint, history shows us that those who persevere during adversity, like the Great Depression or the COVID-19 pandemic, are the ones who thrive. Success requires adaptability—pivoting to new ways of reaching and impacting people—while staying rooted in timeless principles: consistent effort, a commitment to service and the drive to make a difference. By embracing these values and leading boldly, we can overcome obstacles and create meaningful, lasting change.

What’s the most important quality you look for when partnering with other businesses or clients, and how has collaboration shaped your success?

At BeTold, we prioritize partnering with those who align with our values and mission. We admire and seek out organizations that are relentless in their pursuit of excellence—those dedicated to creating the best processes, experiences and products while staying deeply connected to their communities. Our core values—Never Settle, Solution Driven, Creating Connections and All for One— reflect who we are and guide every collaboration. These partnerships inspire us to push boundaries, fostering success through shared passion and purpose. Collaboration isn’t just a tool for growth; it’s the heartbeat of our mission.

How does BeTold contribute to the local community’s growth, and how do you foster relationships with other local businesses or organizations?

As a brand video marketing agency, telling impactful stories is at the heart of what we do. We help businesses curate unique cultures and create emotional connections with their audiences, cutting through today’s media noise. Our work extends to workforce recruitment efforts for local businesses and organizations, including partnerships with the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation and FMWF Chamber of Commerce. A standout example is our campaign, Just Have to Look, which garnered millions of full watch-through views nationwide last year. By showcasing the stories of those we serve, we contribute to the growth and vibrancy of our community.

How do you define success in your role, and how has that definition evolved over time?

Success in my role as CEO/Owner is about elevating those around me. It’s about driving discussions on scaling, refining our products and services, and listening to the needs of our clients and market. Over time, I’ve learned the importance of fostering a culture that operates like a sports team rather than a family. We’re here to excel in our roles and deliver transformative work while maintaining camaraderie and mutual respect. At the core, it’s about executing at the highest level as servant leaders, creating value for our clients and our community.

What’s one thing you’re most excited about for the future of BeTold, and how are you preparing for it?

I’m most excited about seeing our leadership team step into their roles as the faces of our brand video marketing services. Watching others grow and achieve levels they didn’t think possible is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about personal growth—it’s about raising the bar for our industry, serving our clients better and making a lasting impact on our community. By investing in our team and continually innovating, we’re preparing for an exciting and transformative future.

PETER STENEHJEM

My journey has been deeply influenced by the legacy of my family, who instilled in me the values of hard work, integrity and service to others. First International Bank & Trust (FIBT) was built on those same principles, and it’s inspiring to continue the work my family started— helping individuals, businesses and communities achieve their dreams. Our mission of “helping dreams come true, one customer at a time” reflects my personal vision of building lasting relationships and empowering individuals. It’s a privilege to lead a company where these values are at the heart of everything we do.

How do you define success in your role as CEO?

Success, for me, is about honoring the legacy of those who came before me while building something even greater for the future. Initially, I focused on traditional measures like financial growth, but over time, I’ve realized success is more holistic. It’s about creating opportunities for others, empowering our team and making a tangible impact in the communities we serve. Ensuring that our work aligns with the values my family instilled has redefined what success means to me - it’s not just about outcomes, but about doing good along the way.

CEO | First International Bank & Trust (FIBT)

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business?

The greatest lesson I’ve learned is the power of listening. Whether it’s to customers, employees or partners, listening uncovers insights that drive better decisions and build trust. This practice has shaped my approach to leadership, ensuring our strategies are both thoughtful and aligned with the needs of those we serve.

What’s one innovation or strategy that has had a significant impact on FIBT’s growth?

Our investment in digital banking has been transformational. Recognizing the need for convenience and accessibility, we prioritized technology that empowers customers to manage their finances seamlessly. Part of that decision involved the acquisition of Kotapay, one of the leading electronic payments processors in the industry. In 2024 alone, we were able to process over $100 billion for businesses in all 50 states, and we’ll continue to meet the changing needs of our customers head-on in the years to come.

What’s the most important quality you look for when partnering with other businesses or organizations in the community?

Integrity is paramount in any partnership. Shared values and mutual trust create a foundation for meaningful collaboration, and our partnerships have been integral to our success. When we align with others who are equally committed to excellence and impact, everyone benefits—especially the communities we serve.

We actively invest in our communities by supporting local initiatives, partnering with small businesses and encouraging employee volunteerism. These efforts go beyond financial contributions; they’re about building relationships that strengthen the fabric of the community and foster long-term growth.

What has been one of your biggest challenges as a business leader, and how did you overcome it?

One of the greatest challenges has been navigating economic uncertainty. In those moments, I’ve learned that resilience comes from clear communication, adaptability and a steadfast focus on our core values. These principles have helped us overcome adversity and emerge stronger on the other side.

What’s one thing you’re most excited about for the future of FIBT?

I’m excited about the opportunity to continue evolving and innovating for future generations. To prepare, we’re investing in top talent, cutting-edge technology and fostering a culture that embraces change while remaining grounded in our values.

As a business leader, how do you foster an environment of unity, respect and collaboration within your organization?

As leaders, we must foster spaces for collaboration and dialogue, ensuring everyone feels heard and valued. Within FIBT, we cultivate a culture of inclusion, respect and teamwork by valuing diverse perspectives and encouraging open communication. Businesses have a responsibility to lead by example, creating opportunities for unity both within and beyond their walls. By championing collaboration and community, we can play a vital role in bridging divides and fostering connection.

KEYS TO SUCCESS

"My

best advice to the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders is to PRIORITIZE

BUILDING GENUINE RELATIONSHIPS

and never lose sight of the importance of persistence and adaptability. Success is rarely linear; it requires a

BALANCE OF VISION, HARD WORK, and the HUMILITY to

learn from both wins and setbacks."

Reliable electricity is vital to modern life, affecting everything from homes to businesses. Over the past 25 years at Cass County Electric Cooperative (CCEC), I’ve served in various roles under the mission, “To serve our members’ energy needs with affordable and reliable electricity.” The words “to serve” resonate deeply with me. Working at a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative focused on service rather than for profit has been incredibly rewarding.

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business?

No one succeeds alone. Throughout my career, I’ve benefited from mentorship, training and collaboration, and I strive to pay it forward. Our employees are our greatest resource, and a strong team is built by listening, supporting and equipping them for success. When your team thrives, so does your business.

How does CCEC contribute to the local community’s growth?

Commitment to community is a core value at CCEC. We serve a thriving, diverse region and are proud to rank in the top 9% of roughly 900 cooperatives nationwide for new account growth. This growth benefits our members, supporting stable rates and investments in new technologies.

Our business accounts team supports local businesses with projects like expansions or energy efficiency initiatives. We also invest in workforce development and encourage employees to participate in boards and committees, strengthening connections that benefit our members and communities.

What has been one of your industry's biggest challenges?

Our mission to provide affordable, reliable electricity is increasingly complex. The energy sector faces challenges from shifting baseload power resources, growing reliance on intermittent renewables like wind and solar, and rising energy demand, which contribute to a volatile wholesale energy market.

CCEC, alongside Minnkota Power, addresses this with a diverse energy mix (57% coal, 34% wind, 7% hydro, 2% other) and advocates for a balanced, resilient power grid. Additionally, inflation and supply chain issues pressure rates, but we’ve maintained stable pricing for eight years by managing expenses responsibly.

As a business leader, how do you foster an environment of unity, respect and collaboration within your organization, and what role do you think businesses can play in healing societal rifts that arise?

Diverse perspectives can be a strength, but only if we actively listen to and respect differing opinions. Leaders must create safe spaces where people feel heard without fear of judgment. Extreme voices often dominate the conversation in society, but I’m optimistic that common ground can be found through collaboration and mutual respect. At CCEC, we promote civility, open dialogue and teamwork to foster unity and drive positive change in our communities.

How does your business contribute to the local community’s growth, and how do you foster relationships with other local businesses or organizations?

We contribute to community growth by empowering businesses with access to capital and treasury management services tailored to help them succeed. These tools create opportunities for businesses to thrive, which in turn strengthens our local economy. Beyond financial services, we encourage our leadership to actively support causes they’re passionate about, often serving on boards and committees to create meaningful connections and positive impact. This combination of financial expertise and heartfelt community involvement reflects our deep commitment to fostering relationships that drive growth and prosperity.

What has been one of your biggest challenges as a business, and how did you overcome it?

Balancing rapid innovation while maintaining our 100-year legacy of community banking has been both inspiring and rewarding. We’ve achieved this by staying true to our purpose of creating a better way of life for our customers, communities and team members. Each product and service we offer reflect this commitment, allowing us to embrace innovation while remaining steadfast in our values. For example, recognizing the increasing need for affordable housing across our footprint inspired us to take action. Our collaboration with local organizations has led to the development of specialized loan programs aimed at reducing barriers to homeownership. By providing accessible financing options and in some instances, assisting organizations in grant writing, we’re supporting long-term stability for families in need.

What’s one thing you’re most excited about for the future of your company, and how are you preparing for it?

We’re excited about the growing potential to serve the community, building on more than a century of proven and trusted expertise. As a mutual bank, we’re uniquely positioned to prioritize putting the needs of our customers and communities at the center of everything that we do. This trusted foundation, established more than a century ago, guides our strategic investments in technology, resources and people. Whether it’s delivering transparent, flexible loan options or offering digital banking tools that simplify managing your finances, we’re committed to providing solutions that align with the evolving needs of today’s consumers. Our longevity reflects a legacy of reliability, and our customized, proactive service ensures customers can count on us to be a true partner every step of the way.

What advice would you give to the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders?

Understanding customers’ individual business needs and delivering solutions that meet those goals is key to building lasting, loyal partnerships. Lead with integrity, embrace forward-thinking strategies and recognize the importance of choosing financial partners who align with your values and can provide the right resources to help you grow. Never underestimate the impact of giving back to your community – it’s not just good business, it’s the foundation of lasting success.

STEPHANIE SCHROEDER

When I decided to pursue a career in marketing and communications, I knew there would be many different paths I could follow. I learned early on in my career that I didn’t want to “just do marketing,” but I wanted to use my marketing skills for a brand and a cause I was passionate about. When I learned more about the work done at Forum Communications, I knew I had found a great opportunity that would allow me to use my skillset for a mission that’s important to me: sustaining local journalism and ensuring the community’s access to credible, trustworthy information.

How do you define success in your role, and how has that definition evolved over time?

Early on in my career, I wanted to prove myself more than anything. To do this, I tried to fit the mold of what I thought others expected or wanted me to be. As I’ve grown, I’ve realized success is a lot less about pleasing other people and a lot more about being true to yourself. Today, I feel most successful when I’m forming authentic connections, standing up for the things I believe in and doing the things that make me, me.

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business?

A great mentor once told me that the best thing I could do as a leader would be to learn how to embrace ambiguity. For a long time, this was a significant challenge for me —and still is, on occasion. I’m a planner, and I like to know how my day is going to go, what my agenda is going to look like for the week and what my main areas of focus should be for the quarter. But the truth is, there’s so much you can’t plan for in business. Learning how to control what I can and embrace the ambiguity found in the rest has made me a more flexible, patient and calm leader. I may not always have the answer, but I’ve embraced a new mentality in recent years: “Everything is figureoutable.”

What’s one innovation or strategy that has had a significant impact on Forum Communications’ growth?

I came to Forum Communications to help facilitate the launch of digital news subscriptions. While many news organizations had gone digital years before us, this was a big change for our readers who had grown accustomed to flipping through the print product as part of their daily routine. However, we knew this change was necessary to sustain the future of local journalism in our communities. Embracing digital allowed us to continue delivering critical information during a global health crisis and enabled us to continue investing in journalists at a time when most other news publications across the country were scaling back resources. We are beyond grateful that our community showed up to support us and embraced digital alongside us, and we’re pleased to report that we have more readers visiting our publications today than at any other point in our history.

How does Forum Communications contribute to the local community?

A thriving local news organization is at the center of most growing communities, and ours is no exception. Forum Communications plays a pivotal role in connecting people to information and opportunities through both news and advertising. With millions of readers visiting our network of news sites, watching our news broadcasts or reading our print publications every month, we are the premier destination for local businesses and organizations to inform the public of new ventures, location openings, sales, initiatives and more. Over the years, we have proudly helped grow more than 10,000 businesses in the communities we serve by connecting them to their audiences via precise and impactful advertising opportunities.

STEPHANIE’S ADVICE TO BUSINESS LEADERS

• Work on a cause you believe in.

• Take your PTO.

• Be present with your family.

• Lead authentically.

• Hire people who are smarter than you.

• Learn from your mistakes.

• Be vulnerable.

• Be kind.

• Never reply to an email when you’re frustrated.

• Care about the people more than the work. Care about yourself, too.

PATRICK METZGER

The Greenhouse

Icame to be a business coach through a pretty unorthodox manner. After an 11-year teaching career, I left to pursue an itch I had for creating a bigger impact and breaking through a professional ceiling that existed. After starting my own health and wellness coaching company, I started working with a business coach out of the San Diego area. He saw much more in me and encouraged me to forge ahead beyond my current area of expertise. Within only about 18 months, I had transitioned my coaching from health and wellness to holistic life coaching, eventually working into one-on-one high-performance coaching with owners and leaders. From there, I kept getting asked to work with more and more teams and turned my focus toward entire leadership teams and organizations.

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business?

You can grow your business to the extent that you’re willing to keep your foot on the gas and grind, but beware, as there are many more personal and professional roadblocks to dodge when doing so. This lesson really led me to stripping back our team after growing too fast to make sure we had the right people and seats in place to scale our own business more effectively.

What has been one of your biggest challenges as a business leader?

As an early entrepreneur, it was difficult to find the balance between focusing on the business enough and balancing it with personal and family life. About a year-and-a-half ago, my wife and I decided to make a key decision to revamp our business so that it aligned with our personal values and started redesigning the business to circle around those.

How does The Greenhouse contribute to the local community’s growth?

With Community as one of our Core Values, we really define it as making the connections and providing needed resources to others in order to grow. Sometimes, this is helping place a key individual at a business, while other times it’s providing a book, resource or key connection for them. We take a lot of pride in going above and beyond for our clients in helping them find what they really need, as the entire community benefits when we’re all more successful.

What advice would you give to the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders?

Starting and running a business can be very difficult without the right resources and mentors—I’ve been there and done it! Invest in yourself, systems and other people. This will take you to where you want to be in a fraction of the time it would take by yourself. You’ll never regret it, and you’ll achieve your financial goals to make the return on the investment much sooner than you think. My first coach I worked with paid for himself within the first two weeks of working with him!

What is your long-term vision for The Greenhouse, and how does that align with your commitment to the community?

Our long-term vision encompasses building out deeper impact and relationships with our clients. We want to be a trusted partner that works throughout an entire organization in helping it grow. We are also working toward building out a more comprehensive and scalable package of offerings around growth, scalability and exit/succession that will be provided on an even more international level.

In a time when our nation and communities may face division and challenges, how do you believe we can overcome these obstacles and come together to create lasting change?

Lasting change begins with genuine connection and shared purpose within the business community. As business leaders, we have the unique opportunity to foster collaboration and build solutions that serve the greater good of all. A stronger community and a brighter future are created when we all look to uplift each other.

As a business leader, how do you foster an environment of unity, respect and collaboration within your organization?

At The Greenhouse, we really push our Core Values of Authentic Humility and Greater Good. We always look at people as just people, and we embrace the challenges and beauty that dually exists in all of us being different, yet the same. We lead our people and our clients with integrity and always focus on solutions and transparency that will help them achieve what’s important to them. It’s in working together for a bigger cause that truly elevates us beyond the coachclient relationship to a partnership built on trust, shared vision and the drive to achieve extraordinary outcomes together.

"AS BUSINESS LEADERS, WE HAVE THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO FOSTER COLLABORATION AND BUILD SOLUTIONS THAT SERVE THE GREATER GOOD OF ALL. A STRONGER COMMUNITY AND A BRIGHTER FUTURE ARE CREATED WHEN WE ALL LOOK TO UPLIFT EACH OTHER. "

DISCOVER THE CAREERS AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT AWAIT YOU.

Igrew up working in road construction. It was long hours and hot days. The goal was always to complete the job on time and work safely and successfully. I was always the one to show up early and stay late to get the job done and take care of the customer. That mindset was engrained in me and has pushed me into my current role as key account manager, where I enjoy working to provide customers with safe, clean, reliable and affordable energy service, which is core to Xcel Energy’s goals. I take pride in knowing that our customers are taken care of when they need it most.

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business?

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that people want to be heard, and they want you to listen with intent. When I visit customers, they all have visions for their business and want to be successful. My job is to help them with their energy needs, so they can focus on the other aspects of their company.

How does Xcel Energy contribute to the local community’s growth?

Xcel Energy has been engrained in our local communities for over a century. Our team members live, work and play here, actively supporting the communities we serve through board participation, community service and volunteering. Personally, I serve on various boards including for the Ronald McDonald House Charities and the FMWF Chamber, as well as the Economic Development Board in my family’s community. Additionally, I’m an active member of the City of Fargo Sustainability Committee. I work hard to stay visible and build meaningful relationships where we serve.

What advice would you give to the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders?

Embrace a culture of transparency and open communication. There will be times in your journey where you will have to have difficult conversations or deal with difficult tasks. Embrace them; use them to grow personally and professionally. Also, it is important to be a person who others can trust and talk to. I thoroughly enjoy talking to people and I make it a point to learn about them. This helps to build lifelong relationships and friendships.

In a time when our nation and communities face division and challenges, how do you believe we can overcome these obstacles and come together to create lasting change?

Be a collaborator and bring people together for the greater good. We all want to have our voices heard, yet we all need to listen to others. While we may not agree on every issue, finding common ground and working together is essential for creating lasting change in society. A quote that embodies this is from Henry Ford: “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.”

President

Western State Bank

Istarted my career in door-to-door sales, but realized it wasn’t my long-term path. I was drawn to the financial services industry for its stability. I also had family connections in banking, so I made the transition in 2008. I joined Western State Bank in 2014, inspired by a friend’s description of its strong culture and an open role that matched my skills. I wish I’d discovered Western earlier, as our hometown banking philosophy aligns perfectly with my small-town roots and the values I grew up with as the child of small business owners.

How do you define success in your role, and how has that definition evolved over time?

For me, success in my role has always been about balancing high results with relationships. It can mean hitting key financial goals, like growing revenue or gaining new customers. Just as importantly, it’s about building a motivated, skilled team that loves what they do.

Over time, I’ve realized how much the small things matter—whether it’s how we interact with customers, support each other as a team or handle the day-to-day details. Focusing on those small, consistent actions often lead to the biggest wins. My definition of success hasn’t changed drastically, but I’ve come to appreciate that success isn’t only about hitting numbers—it’s about creating a culture where everyone thrives, and that ultimately leads to the best outcomes for the business.

What has been one of your biggest challenges as a business leader?

As a leader, it has been challenging to establish credibility while being younger than average in my role as market president. I quickly recognized that I must exceed expectations to show others what I’m capable of and earn their trust. I prioritize my ongoing learning, prepare as best as I can and show results.

I’ve also tried to make the most of my opportunities. Mentors have been very helpful, and I seek out different perspectives on a challenge or question. If you demonstrate that you’re dedicated, have a strong work ethic and strive for excellence, you’ll earn respect and establish trust as a leader.

How does Western State Bank contribute to the local community’s growth?

Western State Bank supports economic development, encourages financial literacy and gets involved in community initiatives. When we deliver a tailored financial solution, we help businesses grow and succeed. In turn, that creates jobs and strengthens our economy. We address community needs through sponsorships, volunteer efforts and partnerships with local organizations.

We’re big believers in building strong relationships with other businesses and organizations. When we communicate openly and focus on our shared goals, we can make a positive impact and bring greater successes to our communities.

What’s the most important quality you look for when building partnerships or relationships in the community?

It’s difficult to pinpoint a single defining quality in successful business relationships. I believe the foundation lies in the alignment of personal and business values, expertise in key areas and strong communication. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to build connections with individuals who have become trusted advisors, partners and clients. I’m especially grateful for the mentors who have guided me along the way, as their insights have been instrumental in my growth and success.

What’s one thing you’re most excited about for the future of Western State Bank?

One of the most dynamic aspects of banking is its constant evolution, which brings fresh challenges and keeps each day engaging. As the bank continues to grow, we’ll see the addition of new departments, team members, processes and opportunities for our people to advance into new roles.

While these challenges and opportunities are significant, I’m confident in our ability to attract and develop the right talent and foster an environment that promotes learning and growth. Our intentional approach to preparing for growth, while staying true to our core values and vision, ensures we are wellpositioned for a bright and exciting future.

MATTHEW’S ADVICE TO FUTURE LEADERS

• Stay true to your values and vision.

• Remain adaptable.

• Build strong relationships.

• Embrace challenges.

• Be resilient and persistent.

• Surround yourself with a supportive network.

DON DABBERT JR.

Owner

Dabbert Custom Homes

My journey began with a passion for creating quality, lasting homes and providing services that improve people's lives. My personal vision aligns with our mission to build safe, thoughtful homes that reflect individuality while fostering a sense of belonging. For us, it’s more than construction. It’s creating spaces that nurture families and communities.

How do you define success in your role, and what is your long-term vision for Dabbert?

For me, success initially meant achieving business growth and client satisfaction. Over time, I’ve realized it’s also about creating meaningful relationships, empowering my team and contributing positively to the community. True success combines personal fulfillment with shared impact.

My long-term vision is to expand our footprint while maintaining our commitment to quality and community-centered values. By supporting local businesses, offering sustainable housing options and fostering partnerships, we aim to strengthen the local economy and improve the lives of those we serve.

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business?

Adaptability is crucial. Challenges are inevitable, but staying open to change and innovation has shaped my strategies for growth. It’s taught me to lead with resilience and empower my team to embrace challenges as opportunities.

What’s the most important quality you look for when partnering with others in the community?

Integrity is non-negotiable. Partnering with those who share our values fosters trust and mutual growth. Collaboration with like-minded organizations has strengthened our reputation and allowed us to deliver exceptional results.

We are proud to contribute to the community through job creation, partnerships with local suppliers and supporting community initiatives. We actively engage with local organizations, sharing resources and ideas to strengthen the fabric of our community.

What has been one of your biggest challenges as a business leader?

Balancing growth with maintaining quality was a challenge. I overcame it by investing in my team, refining processes and never losing sight of our core values. This balance has ensured sustainable success.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about expanding our innovative designs and sustainable practices. We’re investing in technology and building a culture of continuous learning to stay ahead in the industry.

As a business leader, how do you foster an environment of unity, respect and collaboration within your organization?

I promote respect and inclusivity by valuing diverse perspectives and empowering my team to contribute meaningfully. Businesses can lead by building bridges and creating opportunities for shared growth and fostering hope and harmony in their communities. We have the power to inspire unity by setting an example of collaboration and inclusivity.

Ibegan my career in the investment industry at Ameritrade before it was publicly traded. After spending about eight years in the field, I realized I wanted to make a more significant impact on people’s lives. While I truly enjoyed the work and felt I was making a difference, I was inspired by the impact my father had achieved as a professor. Motivated by this, I left the industry to pursue a PhD at the University of Nebraska. Afterward, I spent about 10 years as a professor. When our dean left, I stepped into the role, feeling that as a dean, I could positively influence more students. At Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM), our goal is to transform lives, which perfectly aligns with my long-standing career aspirations.

What is one innovation or strategy that has had a significant impact on MSUM’s growth, and why did you choose to pursue it?

This year, we launched two new programs: a Master of Science in Cybersecurity and a Master of Science in Business Analytics. These programs were specifically designed to address workforce needs across various industries. Both are science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) - designated, making them particularly attractive to international students interested in coming to the region and staying. Data show strong demand for graduates in these fields, and we are confident these programs will help meet that demand. Additionally, we are developing a master’s degree in project management to address the growing need for expertise in this area.

How does MSUM contribute to the local community’s growth, and how do you foster relationships with other local businesses or organizations?

First and foremost, the College of Business, Analytics and Communication educates the future leaders of our community. Many of our programs are designed to develop skilled professionals in fields like business, journalism and actuarial science. Additionally, our faculty are deeply engaged with the community, serving on advisory boards and consulting with local businesses.

What’s one thing you’re most excited about for the future of MSUM, and how are you preparing for it?

Looking ahead, there are two areas I’m especially excited about. First, we plan to renovate the Center for Business to reflect the look and feel of a modern business school. This transformation will be a game-changer for our students and serve as a centerpiece for MSUM. Second, I am eager to see how artificial intelligence (AI) will shape higher education. Leaders on our industry boards consistently emphasize that AI will revolutionize the workplace, and we must ensure our curriculum evolves to meet the needs of future employers.

KIM KROETSCH

Partner Group Engineering Manager | Microsoft

Ihave been at Microsoft for 24 years going back to the acquisition of Great Plains Software in 2001. I started as an intern from Concordia College, and that evolved into a full-time role as a software developer. Now, I lead our global product development and engineering operations for our Dynamics 365 Finance and Dynamics 365 Human Resources products that are used by businesses worldwide to run their Finance and HR operations. I manage teams located in Fargo and across the U.S., Canada, India and Ireland.

As a senior leader, I lead a team of more than 170 engineers around the world. Each year, we run hundreds of software development projects of varying size and complexity, bringing new features and capabilities to our product.

You’ve been with Microsoft for your entire career – why?

There is so much diversity in business and constantly changing technology, that the problems to solve are never the same. I think this variety and freshness is a big component of it for me.

The other thing I have found that excites me are the people that I work with to solve these problems. They really are the best, brightest and most passionate –from all over the world. Seeing the things we’ve been able to accomplish over the years brings a real sense of pride and accomplishment.

One of the benefits of working for Microsoft is the opportunity to grow both from a career and a leadership perspective. Having started out as an intern and grown into my current role, I’m always mindful of how the company and the people I’ve worked with have supported me. As I’ve had this opportunity to learn and grow as a leader, I pass that along by supporting growing leaders as well.

What’s something that would surprise people about Microsoft Fargo?

First, I really believe that Microsoft Fargo has become a great melding of the best of both cultures, the Microsoft culture and the Fargo culture. From Microsoft, we’ve honed a culture of teamwork and collaboration (that probably started from Great Plains Software); a growth mindset that keeps us constantly wanting to learn from every experience, success or failure alike; and embracing the value of diverse perspectives. The Fargo culture shines a light on the value of contributing to the common good, an amazing work ethic and can-do attitude, along with passion for quality in our work.

Second, I think people would be surprised by the breadth of roles and teams in Fargo. Alongside Software Engineering, we have Sales, Customer Service and Technical Support, Operations and Finance. We even have the team who runs payroll for all our U.S. employees (that’s over 2.5 million pay slips a year!).

What’s the most important quality you look for when hiring for new roles?

Those that are most successful at Microsoft exhibit the ability to adapt and continuously learn – having a curiosity to understand other perspectives, the changing landscape, the changing technology, the changing problems, the changing needs of our customers and a willingness to try new things. When hiring, I also look for an ability to communicate - what the candidate sees in a problem, how they think about a solution, how they bring their past experiences to new problems. We need interpersonal and communication skills, even in engineering! This is critical to working with others effectively because so much of what we do happens in teams.

"HAVING STARTED OUT AS AN INTERN AND GROWN INTO MY CURRENT ROLE, I’M ALWAYS MINDFUL OF HOW THE COMPANY AND THE PEOPLE I’VE WORKED WITH HAVE SUPPORTED ME. AS I’VE HAD THIS OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND GROW AS A LEADER, I PASS THAT ALONG BY SUPPORTING GROWING LEADERS AS WELL."

ALEXANDRA ROW

Iwas raised in Bismarck, North Dakota, and moved to Fargo to attend North Dakota State University. After shifting my focus from health care to sales post-college, I was inspired by Microsoft's culture and eagerly joined the company.

I secured an Azure Customer Success Manager sales role in the Fall of 2020, and I am now an Azure Cloud Solution Architect. In this role, I help customers overcome technical challenges and maximize their use of Microsoft's cloud solutions. Outside of work, I cherish being a mother to my two young children and enjoy volunteering with Alpha Gamma Delta and my favorite local nonprofits.

What creates job satisfaction in your role? What keeps you here?

I was initially drawn to Microsoft because of its strong commitment to philanthropy and volunteerism, both globally and locally. The company's generous community engagement, including matching each volunteer hour with a $25 donation, resonated with my passion for giving back.

Job satisfaction for me evolved significantly once I became a mother. After I had my first child, I quickly realized the importance of flexibility in balancing work and family life. Microsoft has provided a flexible work environment since I joined, allowing me to work in the locations where I thrive the most. This flexibility has been invaluable as a parent. I’m grateful for the 20-week paid parental leave, too!

What keeps me at Microsoft is the unwavering support. My organization and teammates genuinely care about the work I do with our customers and, more importantly, value me as a person.

At Microsoft, I am proud to be part of a company that actively works to create opportunities for women in tech – for everyone in tech! The collaborative culture, extensive training programs and commitment to employee development have empowered me to thrive in my role. I have also joined the Fargo Women at Microsoft Employee Resource group, where I actively support our mission to empower and uplift women within the company and industry. I believe that by continuing to champion diversity and inclusion, we can inspire the next generation of women to pursue their dreams in technology and make a lasting impact on the industry.

What’s something that would surprise people about Microsoft Fargo?

One surprising aspect of Microsoft Fargo is the incredible variety of role types available – especially in my field, sales. On the Fargo campus, you’ll find sales roles ranging from the most technical to entry-level, serving customers from the large global enterprises to small business, spanning all technology groups. Whether you're a tech enthusiast or someone with a knack for customer relations, there's likely a role that fits your strengths and passions.

What’s one thing you’re most excited about for the future of Microsoft, and how are you preparing for it?

I am continually excited about the future of Microsoft, particularly as more customers embrace artificial intelligence (AI) to address their business challenges. I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand how customers utilize AI for enhanced customer service, personalized experiences, better decisionmaking and more.

Copilot has become a valued tool in my daily work, and it's astonishing to imagine the innovations that will emerge in the coming years. My team members and customers frequently share new insights or productivity tips they've discovered using Copilot, making their work and lives easier – and this is just the beginning!

Microsoft is deeply committed to employee learning and development, fostering a culture of continuous learning through various training programs and resources, such as Microsoft Viva Learning, Learning Days and organizational bootcamps.

"JOB SATISFACTION FOR ME EVOLVED SIGNIFICANTLY ONCE I BECAME A MOTHER. THIS FLEXIBILITY HAS BEEN INVALUABLE AS A PARENT."

By supporting local businesses, empowering underserved populations and driving economic growth, we serve as a catalyst for sustainable growth while hopefully also building trust and loyalty within the community.

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business, and how has it shaped your leadership and growth strategies?

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of building trust and relationships over transactions. Banking is not just about offering products; it’s about understanding the unique needs of people and businesses and providing strategic solutions that help clients succeed. The right answers aren’t always the easy ones but being open, honest and thoughtful with our clients allows us to provide the best possible long-term solutions for them. Ultimately, banking is a people-first business. Prioritizing trust and relationships not only drives business growth but also creates opportunity for overall community impact.

What advice would you give to the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders?

Prioritize relationships over transactions – Trust and strong relationships are our greatest assets. People do business with those they trust, and long-term success comes from prioritizing partnerships over short-term wins.

Stay adaptable and embrace change – Be open to innovation, continuously learn and don’t fear change.

Invest in people – Surround yourselves with talented, diverse individuals and invest in their growth. A strong team will amplify our impact and help achieve shared goals.

Be resilient and think long-term – Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but resilience and a long-term perspective will help us weather difficulties. Learn from failures and use them as stepping stones to future success.

Lead with integrity – Always lead by example and make decisions rooted in honesty and fairness. Integrity fosters trust, which is critical for sustaining relationships, organizations and businesses.

ROCKY SCHNEIDER

Growing up in Downtown Fargo, I never imagined returning to raise a family here. I have a deep appreciation for the leaders who had the vision to dream of a better, more vibrant Downtown. The transformation we’ve seen didn’t happen by accident— it was the result of purposeful community effort. I am fortunate to work for a dedicated Board at the DCP whose individual missions and goals align towards building a unified, thriving community where businesses, residents and visitors can come together to create those core memories.

What do you see as Downtown Fargo’s biggest success over the past few years?

Downtown Fargo has truly become a regional hub—a place where people want to live, work and visit. The collaborative effort of the community, from our business owners to our city leaders, has been instrumental in this transformation. A major source of pride for me is Downtown’s resilience through the pandemic. Our community continues to get national recognition for Downtown’s recovery and revitalization.

How do you see small businesses fitting into Downtown Fargo’s success?

Small businesses are the heartbeat of Downtown Fargo. Their passion and drive are what set us apart from other places. We don’t have chain restaurants and drive throughs; we have neighborhood businesses with a personal commitment to providing that positive customer experience. Getting to work with and watch these businesses succeed motivates me every day to continue working hard at the DCP, supporting their growth and fostering an environment where they can thrive.

Jared Eischen

You’ve mentioned the importance of small business and other collaborations, how have they contributed to the success of these businesses?

Over a decade ago, the Downtown businesses created a business improvement district (BID), and the DCP has served as the administrator of the BID ever since. The work of our BID crew is consistently impressive and plays a crucial role in ensuring Downtown remains clean, safe and beautiful. The BID’s efforts – from holiday lights in the winter to hanging flower baskets in the summer – elevates the overall vibe of Downtown.

One of the successes in my time at DCP has been the award-winning partnership formed within Broadway Square. With the DCP serving as summer administrator of the Square, I am honored to be a part of the programing Folkways and other community groups put on. The 46 events hosted last summer at the Square have made it the ‘busiest little park in the city’ and have helped drive foot traffic to local businesses and have provided a thriving variety of programming where all are welcome.

What has been a major challenge you’ve faced in your role at the DCP?

One challenge of having 20 years of revitalization efforts has been managing the natural life cycle of businesses. While we’ve seen beloved businesses close, this is part of Downtown’s organic growth. It’s tough, but also a sign that our community is evolving. As we have seen with some recent new business announcements, our community rallies to support the next generation of entrepreneurs. This dedication to collaboration, rather than competition, is what makes Downtown Fargo unique and special.

What’s your vision for the future of Downtown Fargo?

I want Downtown Fargo to remain a vibrant, inclusive space that welcomes everyone, now and for generations to come. I am confident that the collaborative spirit that continues to meld and leverage the great work of organizations like the DCP, Folkways, BID and others, along with the generosity and support from so many of our larger, landmark corporations, will ensure that Downtown remains a place where people come together, not just for work, but for connection and enjoyment. As one recent DCP Broadway Monument Award winner said, “Even if you don’t live or work Downtown, we are all stakeholders. The more success we see Downtown, the more success we see as a region.”

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business, and how has it shaped your leadership and growth strategies?

Coming to this role with a background working on mega infrastructure projects, one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is the power of collaboration. Success should not be a solitary journey. Downtown Fargo’s success is proof of this—businesses, residents and community partners all contribute to the growth and vibrancy of the area. I’ve adopted a leadership approach that focuses on building relationships and leveraging the collective creativity. To me, there is no such thing as a competitor, just future collaborators, and Downtown is lucky to be chock full of talented people and teams doing incredible things.

"I WOULD ASK EVERYONE TO BE PROUD OF YOUR COMMUNITY. WHATEVER

THAT COMMUNITY LOOKS LIKE TO YOU—WHETHER IT’S DOWNTOWN FARGO, THE CITY OR EVEN A NEIGHBORHOOD—IT’S ESSENTIAL THAT WE ALL LIFT EACH OTHER UP. JUST LIKE WE FEEL JOY WHEN A STRANGER SMILES, WAVES OR OFFERS A KIND WORD, WE HAVE THE POWER TO CREATE AND SHARE THAT SAME POSITIVE ENERGY. WE ALL HAVE THE CHOICE TO SHAPE THE NARRATIVE ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY, SO I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO SHARE THE NARRATIVE THAT BRINGS JOY."

STEVE MATTERN

Growing up in a middle-class family in a small North Dakota community, I learned the value of hard work from my parents. My dad was an electrical lineman, and my mom worked at the local bank. Inspired by a friend, I chose telecommunications and graduated from Northland Community College in Wadena, Minnesota. I joined Midco more than 20 years ago, drawn by its mission to create the best customer and employee experiences and the best fiber network in the region. Midco's positive culture and strong values aligned with my desire to make a meaningful impact.

What is one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned in business?

Building strong relationships is crucial. This lesson has shaped my leadership by emphasizing a positive, collaborative work environment and a customercentric approach. By focusing on people and relationships, we foster a culture of trust and respect, driving long-term growth and success. This helps keep our work environment interactive and fun, adding immeasurable value.

What’s one innovation or strategy that has had a significant impact on your business’s growth, and why did you choose to pursue it?

We are currently focused on our Fiber Forward ® initiative – a multi-year, $500-million investment in our fiber network. By upgrading our network infrastructure with cutting-edge fiber technology, we can deliver best-in-class connectivity to meet our customers' growing demands for years to come. We are also expanding our reach to more homes and communities across the Midwest, ensuring more people have access to our network for critical services like education, remote work and telemedicine. By enhancing and expanding our network, we are supporting our business growth and contributing to the development and prosperity of the communities we serve.

How does your business contribute to the local community’s growth?

We are always looking for ways to help the communities grow and thrive. We actively engage with the chambers of commerce in these communities, participating in various initiatives and events that promote economic development and community well-being.

Additionally, we strive to be a force for good in the communities we serve through volunteerism from local team members and with grants from the Midco Foundation. Since its inception, the Midco Foundation has donated over $6 million to nonprofits, local governments and schools throughout our five-state service area.

What advice would you give to the next generation of leaders?

Focus on building up others and working hard. Success is not just about individual achievement; it's about creating an environment where everyone can thrive. By empowering your team, fostering collaboration and supporting the growth of those around you, you can build a strong foundation for long-term success. Work hard, embrace challenges, stay adaptable, continuously learn and be open to new ideas and innovations. The impact you make on others and the relationships you build will define your legacy as a leader.

BUILDING A RESILIENT WORKFORCE:

The role of mental health support in schools

Schools play a crucial role in preparing today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders, and that goes beyond academics. When students and staff have the mental wellness support they need, they develop the resilience, creativity and productivity essential for success in both school and their future careers. Investing in mental health now means building a stronger, more capable workforce for the future.

During January’s Pulse event, The Pulse of K-12 Mental Wellness: Building Supportive Spaces for Students and Educators, panelists highlighted how schools, educators and community partners are tackling mental health challenges and creating brighter futures for students and staff – and how you can fulfill your role in doing the same.

Mental health challenges are becoming more pronounced, with 61.2% of high school students in North Dakota reporting their mental health was not good on at least one day in the 30 days before the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The percentage of students considering suicide also rose from 12.4% in 2009 to 18.8% in 2019. These figures underscore the urgent need for schools to prioritize mental health support. (2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey)

Keep reading to discover the importance of accessible mental health resources, and innovative and collaborative solutions from the experts who joined us.

The growing impact of unmet mental health needs in schools

When mental health needs are unmet, the effects can disrupt every aspect of a student’s life - hurting academic performance, attendance and social development. The numbers don’t lie. Between 2019 and 2023, anxiety cases surged by 63%, PTSD rose by 36% and depression increased by 13%. The rising challenges underscore just how critical mental health support is in schools, not just for well-being, but for their future success.

When students struggle with mental health challenges, their ability to stay engaged in learning takes a hit, making it harder to reach their full potential. When schools prioritize mental health support, they create supportive environments where students can develop into capable, confident and resilient individuals.

The need for early intervention is clear. The Village Family Service Center (The Village) shows that 22% of North Dakotan and Minnesotan high school students have seriously considered suicide within the past year. Addressing mental health early not only helps students navigate their challenges but also equips them with essential life skills, setting them up for long-term success.

Collaborative solutions

Schools are stepping up to address mental health challenges by reimagining traditional models of support. Take the Moorhead Alternative Learning Center, for example. By adopting a four-day school week, education professionals now have dedicated time to assess student needs, collaborate with colleagues and develop action plans.

Collaboration is another key to success. The Village is making mental health care more accessible by offering on-site counseling in dozens of schools. Embedding services within schools removes barriers to care, ensuring timely support for those who need it.

Community partnerships

Building sustainable mental health programs in schools takes more than just good intentions – it requires strong partnerships with community organizations. Local initiatives play a crucial role in securing funding and resources, helping expand access to mental health services.

One innovative approach comes from Superintendent Cory Steiner of Northern Cass School, who envisions full-service community schools that integrate services like mental health counseling, child care and dental care to ensure students and families have access to comprehensive support in one central location, reducing stress and logistical challenges.

Getting engaged and involved

When it comes to mental health in schools, everyone has a role to play – from parents and education professionals to local businesses and community leaders. Strengthening support systems is about creating a culture where mental health well-being is a shared priority.

Here’s how:

• Advocate for increased funding and policies that prioritize mental health services.

• Partner with schools to provide resources, mentorship or in-kind support.

• Normalize conversations about mental health to reduce stigma and create a culture where seeking help is encouraged.

• Investing in mental health support is an investment into stronger, healthier communities for generations to come. Together, we can ensure that the leaders of tomorrow have the mental health support they need to succeed.

CHAMBER DAY AT THE NORTH DAKOTA CAPITOL PREMIER SPONSOR

Chamber Day at the Capitol: Leadership, growth and workforce

In February, The Chamber and 31 business leaders traveled to Bismarck for Chamber Day at the North Dakota Capitol. This two-day event provided a frontrow seat to legislative discussion and a chance to share ideas with lawmakers about the future of North Dakota’s economy.

Smart Spending and Tax Policy

A key topic of discussion was fiscal responsibility. House Majority Leader Rep. Mike Lefor highlighted HB 1278, a bill focused on better financial oversight. Lawmakers also talked about property tax reform and keeping the Legacy Fund strong for future generations.

Workforce challenges and solutions

Business leaders said their top priority is workforce development. Senate Majority Leader Sen. David Hogue stressed that solving workforce shortages isn’t just about jobs—it’s about investing in housing and child care so families can thrive. Other leaders, like Sen. Jonathan Sickler and Rep. Mike Nathe, discussed expanding apprenticeship grants and other programs to help North Dakota attract and keep top talent.

Breakfast with the Governor

On day two, the group met Gov. Kelly Armstrong at the Governor’s Residence for breakfast and conversation. He emphasized the need for policy over politics—focusing on real solutions to strengthen North Dakota’s economy.

Looking ahead

North Dakota’s growth must be intentional, sustainable and built on strong collaboration between policymakers and business leaders. From leveraging AI to enhancing government efficiency to expanding workforce programs, the path forward depends on strategic leadership and forward-thinking innovation.

The Chamber also hosted Moorhead Area Day at the Capitol on March 4-5, during the time of print. Stay tuned to The Chamber’s channels for key takeaways from that annual event!

The Chamber Actively Testifying: Legislative Updates

The following are numerous bills that The Chamber submitted testimony on in January 2025. These efforts support or oppose key legislation that impacts the business climate, workforce development, child care and more. Below are the bills, The Chamber's stance, and why they matter to our future.

This is not an all-inclusive list of bills The Chamber has or will submit testimony on, and there have been many new updates during and since the time of The Bridge magazine printing. For more detailed and up-to-date information, visit The Chamber’s website.

SUPPORT

HB 1191 – Office of Entrepreneurship

Why it matters: A statewide entrepreneurship ecosystem is vital for the continued growth of North Dakota’s economy. This bill will foster innovation, drive economic diversity and enhance entrepreneurial opportunities across the state.

SB 2225 – H.O.M.E. Grant Program

Why It Matters: This program provides resources to develop affordable and long-term housing solutions in our communities. It ensures that North Dakota is prepared to meet growing housing demands, supporting workforce retention and community growth.

SB 2282 – Child Care Tax Credit

Why It Matters: This income tax credit for employersupported child care will reduce financial burdens for working families and businesses, making child care more accessible and affordable while addressing the workforce shortage.

HB 1012 – Child Care Assistance

Why It Matters: Supporting this bill will help address the childcare shortage, providing crucial economic assistance to working families and employers. It demonstrates the state’s commitment to investing in early childhood programs to increase access to quality care.

SB 2239 – Apprenticeship Grant Program

Why It Matters: This bill supports apprenticeships by providing grant dollars to cover associated costs, helping to develop a skilled workforce pipeline that is essential to the state’s economic growth.

SB 2254 – Transportation Services Funding

Why It Matters: Funding transportation services is crucial for connecting North Dakotans to educational, employment, healthcare and community opportunities. Reliable transportation infrastructure supports economic growth and accessibility for all residents.

SB 2221 – Healthcare Worker Student Loan Repayment

Why It Matters: By offering loan repayment assistance to healthcare workers, this bill helps attract and retain skilled professionals in North Dakota, ensuring quality care for our communities while fostering a strong workforce.

HB 1221 – Workforce Education Innovation Program

Why It Matters: Critical investments into this program will ensure that North Dakota’s educational institutions are equipped to meet the evolving needs of the workforce, aligning career pathways with industry demand to create a robust talent pipeline.

OPPOSE

HB 1150 – Sunday Business Closure (Blue Laws)

Why It Matters: This bill proposes a restriction on businesses, requiring them to close on Sundays. If passed, it would limit the flexibility of businesses, especially in retail and service sectors, and impact the economic vitality of communities that rely on weekend trade.

HB 1259 – Elimination of Daylight Saving Time

Why It Matters: While we recognize the desire to remove Day Light Savings time, this matter should be handled uniformly at the Federal level. Our region is a multi-city, bi-state, metropolitan area operating as one region, with thousands of individuals and businesses conducting commerce on either side of the Red River, every day. With multiple states and providences surrounding North Dakota – this bill would erect burdensome delays, increased administrative costs, mass confusion and potential economic loss.

HB 1315 – National Guard Deployment Restrictions

Why It Matters: This bill proposes to restrict the deployment of the National Guard. While the intent to protect the Guard is important, this bill could create unintended consequences by reducing the state's flexibility to respond to emergency situations. The National Guard plays a crucial role in supporting local communities during natural disasters, public health emergencies and other critical events.

HB 1141 – Limiting Community Organizations' Access to Grants

Why It Matters: If passed, this bill could significantly restrict the ability of community organizations to partner with state and local governments, impeding the development and expansion of initiatives that benefit North Dakota communities.

HB 1571

– Repealing Tax Exemptions for Biologic Manufacturing

Why It Matters: Repealing this exemption would put North Dakota at a competitive disadvantage, hindering the growth of the biologic manufacturing sector and making the region less attractive to new and existing businesses.

AND TALENT

Strategies for attracting and retaining talent 6

Fargo Moorhead West Fargo is a vibrant and evolving community, with a wealth of opportunities for attracting and retaining talent. From innovative workforce development programs to fostering inclusive environments, local leaders are creating strategies that are not only changing the way we think about work but also making it possible for businesses to grow and thrive.

Local experts at The Chamber’s recent Workforce Forum shared six strategies for creating a supportive, inclusive and sustainable workforce ecosystem in our region.

1. FOSTERING BELONGING THROUGH BUILDING COMMUNITY

A thriving community culture is essential for attracting and retaining talent, and creating spaces that foster a sense of belonging can lead to higher employee engagement. Joe Burgum, Co-Founder of Folkways, emphasized that combating social isolation and promoting belonging through shared experiences significantly impacts workplace dynamics. Folkways does this by facilitating community spaces and events where people can connect, collaborate and contribute to a shared purpose. This sense of belonging helps employees feel valued, increasing productivity and retention.

ACTIONABLE STRATEGY: Invest in community-building initiatives that foster connections between employees, whether through social events, collaborative projects, spaces or shared experiences.

2. SUPPORTING SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND EMPLOYMENT

For individuals facing economic challenges, targeted career support programs can make a significant impact. Ashley Littlewolf, Assistant Coordinator at SENDCAA, shared how the Career Coach program helps low-income individuals overcome barriers to employment and gain financial independence. Through personalized coaching and guidance, SENDCAA empowers participants to find sustainable jobs, ultimately strengthening the workforce and improving quality of life.

ACTIONABLE STRATEGY: Implement career coaching or mentorship programs that give individuals the tools and support to succeed in the workforce.

3. EXPANDING ACCESS TO GOOD JOBS

The Good Jobs Challenge aims to assist underserved populations in securing well-paying jobs. Grace Rebel, Career and Education Coordinator for the FMWF Chamber, discussed how this initiative is for individuals who often face barriers to employment and seeks to provide resources, education and training to break those barriers down. By helping 900 individuals gain access to good-paying jobs, the initiative strengthens both the local economy and workforce.

ACTIONABLE STRATEGY: Collaborate with local organizations to offer upskilling training for current employees, career resources and employment opportunities for underserved populations to bridge the employment gap.

4. INTEGRATING NEW AMERICANS INTO THE WORKFORCE

Dan Hannaher, ND Field Director for Global Refuge, highlighted the significant advantages of integrating New Americans and refugees into the local workforce. This approach not only addresses workforce shortages but also enriches the community with diverse skills and perspectives between refugees and the local population fosters a stronger, more inclusive economy.

ACTIONABLE STRATEGY: Develop mentorship, language support and job placement programs to help refugees and immigrants integrate into the workforce and build sustainable career paths.

5. GUIDING INDIVIDUALS TO LONG-TERM SUCCESS

Mentorship is often the key to overcoming barriers and ensuring long-term career success. Bill Burnside, Team Leader at Moorhead Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program (RMCEP), highlighted that funding is important, but guidance and mentorship are essential for helping individuals navigate career challenges. RMCEP’s program focuses on providing the support needed to help individuals build confidence and succeed in their chosen fields.

ACTIONABLE STRATEGY: Pair individuals with mentors who can offer personalized guidance, helping them build skills and overcome challenges to achieve their career goals.

6. VIRTUAL REALITY FOR CAREER EXPLORATION

Emerging technologies, like virtual reality (VR), offer innovative ways to explore career pathways. Matt Chaussee, CEO/Co-Founder of CareerViewXR, introduced VR job tours, which allow students and career seekers to explore industries and jobs they might never have considered. These immersive experiences help people make more informed career choices and broaden their career horizons.

ACTIONABLE STRATEGY: Use immersive technology, such as VR, to help students and job seekers explore potential career pathways and industries through interactive experiences.
